Neurodivergency becomes the Norm
old drawing that was meant to be my final spectember entry for this year.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To the people who built the guidestones in orbit of our world. This message is towards you and the rest of your kind
We are the Savunato of the planet Apsis in the Oese system. it may not seem like it, but we believe to be your descendants. You may not remember our ancestors of your kind, who first landed on Apsis. It has been 10 million years since that happened. But we are happy to refresh your memory.
From the knowledge we gathered, catastrophe had struck your home planet. We don't know what happened, but it was bad enough for your kind to lose all hope of mending what was broken.
So you looked to the stars for a second chance. In a last ditch effort to save your kind, you launched the Eos Ark program. Sending 35 colony ships across a sea of stars, looking for any habitable planet to call home.
However those colony ships were flawed, they were made in a rush. And had no way of holding its own plants and animals to start agriculture. And too little gear for the colonists to survive in their current form.
Our colony ship just so happened to land here on Apsis. And we couldn’t have been more thankful for it. Apsis is very much like earth, having her own oceans and life. The flora here are fleshy and adorned with red broad leaves. While the fauna walked on three legs, saw with three eyes, and were protected by a woody exoskeleton.
By our sheer luck, the 6 planets of our system had aligned and gifted us a world we could actually survive on. The native life was digestible and the air was breathable. We had our second chance.
Our ancestors’ ship however, was ill-prepared. Again there were barely any tools to help them survive in their current form. We couldn’t shape the world to our needs.The world shaped us to her needs. We adapted, and we evolved.
Relative to your anatomy and lifestyle. Our arms became hyper-extended and stronger. Meaning we can switch between bipedal and quadrupedal locomotion on the fly. Our ancestral thumbs have become vestigial. In place of this, our Index and pinky fingers have become opposable so we can manipulate our environment once more. Our faces too have elongated, our teeth grew harder to get through the exoskeletons of our prey. And we grew fangs to slice through the trees.
One of the most significant things in our history was a slow but all encompassing change to the way we think of the world. Several mental states spurred on by genetics had spread across our population. Mental conditions you would classify as Autism, ADHD, OCD, Dyslexia, Anxiety, Depression, and so on. For you, you’d call us neurodivergent, For us it’s simply the norm, It makes us who we are.
Our modern society has been slowly reworked from the ground up. All in order to empower our new mentality. Now revolving around organization and efficiency. Our work ethic is streamlined to the point where we can get all the day’s work done before noon. With our goal being placed on long term results rather than pure production. Extreme emphasis has been put on the care and wellbeing for the developmentally disabled.
We put as much care into texture as they do with colors and patterns. Plenty of our cultures have a wide array of both visual and tactile patterns and a variety of textures to best fit the wearer. And affection through physical contact is revered as a sign of deep trust within many of our cultures.
We have sailed far beyond the reaches of our new cradle. Reaching new heights by reaching the other worlds that orbit our sun. We’ve explored, colonized, and have begun terraforming the most habitable worlds to make them as comfortable as apsis. We have even begun plunging into the interstellar depths to survey our closest neighbors.
One day we found your wayward stones. The plaques made of the spirit of our original homeworld, like the embers of a great fire holding out in the cold quiet night. We found them on the space station that brought you here, that brought our ancestors down to apsis.
I myself, the Savunato writing this, was one of the lucky few to board your station. We found it still orbiting apsis, Everything was still intact and untouched like a day hadn’t passed. Like we were connected from the depths of time.
We looked to the cosmos to find the others. Sending probes out into deep space with our history. And beaming messages to distant stars, All in hopes of finding you or another one of your descendants. No one’s responded so far, We may very well be the last living descendants of your kind.
If any of you are still out there. Let us show you we did it. we did it humanity, we made it. We survived. We made it through the toughest Apsis had to offer. We shared the worst mistakes the both of us have made. We learned for the better. We kept the flame going. May we survive for another 10 million years. May we be your successors.
If any of you are still out there.
I hope we made you proud…
There's a bit of headcanon backstory of Scott's disastrous trainwreck of a lovelife I always kinda mean to write out (shout out to @janetm74 and @liseylou!). So it features here. Gordon watches celebrity news. Fischler's brother (of all people!) gets married. Nothing goes as planned. Scott is NOT having a good time. Nor has he been for a while. Bereznik gets mentioned. An OC that might be relevant later gets mentioned. The GDF units I think may have IR on the radar get mentioned. Scott has great brothers and good friends. He's still not having a good time.
PAGE SIX
Ever since Kat Kavanaugh buried a hatchet and wasn't chasing conspiracy theories about them on Global Holovision anymore, watching the news live was a once in a blue moon activity in Casa Tracy. They followed the major world events through John and Eos (maybe a bit of social media on a relatively quiet morning), and they were likely to be part of those in some capacity at least a third of the times. Sometimes a half. But it was one of those days. A relative lull in rescues compiled with the exhaustion of the previous fortnight streak of disasters bred mildly numb boredom. Batteries too low to pursue their usual hobbies, they gravitated to the lounge.
Scott was ever at the desk with holo screens full of quarterly budget reports, because their biggest brother did stock market numbers for LEISURE, apparently. Virgil was playing, as usual, but the music was slowly fading to a halt. Alan was gaming, or pretending to be while napping, his VR goggles on. Kayo was going through some specs, half leaning on the couch cushions. Even John was in a quiet lull up in orbit, his hologram just bobbing at the comms unit, hanging out with everybody, but not really a part of any conversation. That left Gordon scrolling lazily through newsreels. The sudden yelp sent Alan tumbling on the floor and Scott at least half an inch closer to a cardiac arrest under thirty. A keen observer would have noticed Kayo reaching for a knife in the ankle holster. The piano music keened on an abrupt note and stopped. Several pairs of VERY unamused eyes stared Gordon down.
The Fish was on his feet already, bursting with excitement, sending the news holo to the center of the lounge.
"Did you guys know Fischler has a brother?!?!"
The assorted grumps and groans across the lounge indicated that they not only didn't know, but weren't in the least thrilled by that information. Only John and Kayo shared a quiet look, because OF COURSE they would know.
Gordon surveyed the lounge in triumph, setting the stage for a punchline.
"He has a brother and he's getting married!"
"Who, Fischler?"
Alan was still scrambling up from his hardwood landing and making a show of rubbing an ouchie. Scott at least looked ready to switch gears to the full "hurt brother!" mode. Gordon was not deterred.
"No, dummy, not Fischer! His brother is getting married!"
"And that's any of our business how?"
Alan was still not ready to relinquish attention from his boo-boo. Not with so many big brothers in attendance. But John, Kayo and Virgil were already sharing concerned LOOKS. Any widely publicized event with cameras rolling and hundreds in attendance, involving Fischler, could potentially turn into a showcase of his latest "invention", or ten. Which would mean potential casualties and work for IR. They would need to be on the look-out and on standby. Scott waved at the comm to get the volume up.
The holo displayed a close pic of a younger and significantly more polished version of Langstrom Fischler, hair sleecked back, but a weaselly smile just a tad on the manic side. The celebrity news anchor was gushing about a "dashing fresh face on the World Senate, a philanthropist and patron of innovation, a devoted brother and a consummate athlete, setting off to be a force of a positive change in the world" and "his drop dead gorgeous fiancée, a once Miss Brazil runner-up, who dedicated herself to the selfless life of service, decorated for honor and courage". The picture on the screen changed for an official GDF snapshot of a tall young brunette in dress blues. The insignia on the collar indicated the rank of Captain and breastplanks - several high ranking awards for valor. The picture changed to a series of candid paparazzi snaps of the "happy couple". The show host droned on with one corny cliche after another about the "match made of dreams" and a " high profile dream wedding" scheduled to take place on a cozy remote island.
Gordon interrupted the stream of saccharine platitudes:
"Huh? How come we're not invited? Scott, you know like everyone in the World Senate!"
But his voice was drowned out by the deafening snap of the metal stylus, broken in Scott's fingers. The sound of the desk chair hitting the floor, as Scott stood up and all but ran from the lounge, was even louder.
"Huh?!"
Gordon, yet again, surmised the bewilderment of everyone present. Virgil was half out to follow Scott, when a ping came through on Gordon's comm. The sign flashed pink.
"Yay! Looks like I'm going after all! Penny needs a plus one! John, can I borrow your tux?!"
John half waved his brother off, brows furrowed and hands already flying over invisible files, when another pink ping came through. It was Kayo's turn for a "Huh?" moment.
"Looks like Penny needs a plus two, as well. I'm invited".
That deflated Gordon's initial excitement enough to notice Virgil leaving in the general direction of Dad's office, where Scott had locked himself. Before he reached the door to try and reason with big brother to talk about... whatever that was, John sent two files to his comm. One - a picture they all saw a hundred times on Dad's desk back in Kansas, but it didn't compute out of context. Scott's Airgroup Wing after a training flight. All hugging and laughing, still in flightsuits. Scott and the girl from the news today - Fischler Jr.'s fiancée - at the center. The other Virgil never saw before. It would figure since it was a screenshot from, what he recognized with some dread, was Dad's old phone. There was a picture sent to a private chat with Dad of the same girl, in a sundress, and Scott in a polo shirt, apparently both on leave. An almost ten years younger Scott was smiling like he could power up a sun. The message to Dad read "SHE SAID YES!!!". The date of the message indicated about a month and a half before Scott's mission to Bereznik. Virgil sank to the floor, leaning on the wall, never going through with the knock on the locked office door.
***
It was such an unbelievable cliché it felt surreal. The thunderstorm, the lightning, the lash of downpour across his face. Then again, it was fitting, as his world was going crashing down around him. Yet again. There was nothing surreal about the hard edges of Mom's ring she just gave him back. For about six weeks he was the happiest man alive. Dad's IR project was well underway, and he was to share that dream not only with Dad and brothers, but with the love of his life. He should have known better... The words were real too - hard and ruthless. About Dad yanking his leash, and expecting nothing but dutifully following in his footsteps and his vision, concealed by his looming shadow, and giving up what they both dreamed about and worked so hard for - test flights, command ranks, career in service. The echo came back to him often, in one dark hour or another, after his world shattered to pieces yet another time. Dad voiced his reservations clearly, but did agree to give him Mom's ring. "When you know, you know". Wasn't it how he and Mom got married? It WAS too soon, they WERE too young, and frateenization within a unit WAS an issue, but with IR lifting off that wasn't to be a problem, once he told her the full scale of the classified project. He should have known better...
He last remembered the ring yanked off his neck with the dogtags chain by a smirking Berezniki guard. He put up a hell of a fight for that and was beaten within an inch of his life. The first time. Next time he found it, inexplicably, in Dad's safe on the island, after the search for Zero-X was called off. He meant to ask Kyrano, as he wasn't conscious or coherent enough for the extraction op, or for months after, but the man never returned his calls anymore, sending in a resignation after half a year of following leads on the Hood. There wasn't much room in his mind or hours in his days to give it more thought for years after. Or more pieces for his heart to break into. He should have known better. And now she was getting married. To someone bright and promising, changing the world for the better, who wasn't him. He should have known better as well. The sound of glass shattering against the wall and a visceral scream finally sent Virgil in, wild-eyed, breaking past the lock.
***
John lifted an eyebrow in a perfect quizzical arch, putting the tablet down, as the "wedding party" poured, or rather, limped into the lounge. Gordon's tuxedo sleeve was torn clear off, his bowtie, undone, served as a makeshift tourniquet. Parker sported cuts, bruises and a glorious shiner. Penelope's elaborate updo was in disarray, one heel of a golden pump broken. Kayo's slip dress hem was torn, exposing a garter holster. As John hurried to the kitchen for the first aid kit, he heard her hiss something to the effect of "You should have seen the other guys".
The villa was quiet. Grandma had Alan on the mainland for the weekend. Virgil chased Scott up the volcano. There was a good chance biggest brother and his stormy mood was best quarantined at the Round House for the rest of the day. John was waiting in the lounge for the fallout, one way or another. He wasn't quite prepared to the sight on display, handing out ice packs.
Gordon hissed too and bit off a curse, as John set about cleaning the bullet graze on his arm.
"Pen, do all your friends whip out a standard issue gun at the altar and read the groom Miranda rights instead of vows?"
Lady Penelope was busy trying to look poised while breaking the second heel off a designer pump, to make them even.
"It was a deep undercover mission to round up a drug and slave trafficking ring. A destination wedding was a most fortunate venue for the occasion."
Kayo looked up from the kitchen isle at that, not pausing to stop extracting a considerable arsenal of throw-knives from her bodice.
"Looks like the Fischler brothers were bankrolled by mafia. The crazy inventions AND the World Senate election. In exchange for some... perks."
Kayo snorted and went back to her inventory of weapons.
Gordon perked up as the anesthetic cream kicked in and forgot to NOT wave the injured hand around to assist his narrative.
"It was actually kinda cool! The bride barked out "Hands up!" instead of "I do"! The bridesmaids all dropped their bouquets and brandished guns. The bridal party were all Organized Crime and Counterterrorism. Well, and us... A little heads up wouldn't have hurt, Penny. Then all hell broke loose. Rose petals and confetti everywhere. You should have seen Fischler's face!"
Gordon was nearly flailing with excitement, so John's hands pushed him mildly back into the seat. Turquoise eyes found Penelope's line of sight:
"So... no wedding?"
"No wedding indeed."
Up on the Tracy Volcano Virgil's comm vibrated, switched to silent mode hours ago. John's message read "No wedding."
Virgil exhaled a sigh, but didn't yet know how to break the subject with a brother, seated next to him on the sun-warmed boulder, overlooking the ocean. Blue eyes were fixed on a point far away in the distance, or maybe far away in the past, Scott still wouldn't talk about.
“He’s found us again.”
Flaith Scott O’Treasaigh stared at his brother. “You’re sure?”
“A definite report from the Wind. He was sighted just off the far southern isles. I hold some hope that the peoples there saw his true self and acted accordingly.”
They could only hope. A spear in that’s man’s belly would improve the world.
The thought was an uncouth one, and beneath his station and belief, but considering the curse Gaat had been on their souls, he was almost willing to damn his own if it would protect his family.
Scott ran his fingers through his short beard, resisting the urge to scratch as always. It was necessary to wear the beard in these northern climes. That or have his face freeze off in the air.
John had let his hair grow, well past his shoulders. Scott almost envied the warmth it gave his brother. But he could not grow his own hair that length. Too many bad memories.
Besides, there were other reasons to grow all that red hair. It hid the scars down the side of his brother’s face and Cóic’s scale. It didn’t pay to advertise, after all.
“Cóic’s response?”
“She’s calm. She has confidence in you.”
“And Eos?”
His brother’s lips twisted just a little. “Let’s just say I’m glad our flying gear is fire-proof.”
“Angry?”
“I wouldn’t advise letting her near Gaat should we ever encounter him. I don’t think he’d be fireproof enough.”
“She has reason.” Scott sighed. “We all have reason.”
But that was not the commitment.
“How much time do we have?”
“Some days, a week, perhaps. He is without dragon. He must have learnt from last time. But he does have several ships and an army of mercenaries.”
“We could stay and fight.”
“We are outnumbered and Cóic has no wish to expose our family to war.”
Scott cursed under his breath. There were advantages to having your own militia, but they had left that all behind when they fled their home, choosing the same reasons Cóic was choosing now. The hood wanted Cóic and all their dragons and Scott was unwilling to put innocent lives between the deadly cretin and the great dragon.
But Gaat could not have the Thunderbird. Not while Scott O’Treasaigh lived.
“Do we have a path?”
“Far to the east are the Viking lands. There are many fjords and islands that will help us hide. The distance is barely half that we have already travelled across the great sea, but there is talk of a vast land beyond the fjords that while harsh, may provide safety.”
Scott stared at his dear brother, the aquamarine of his right eye out-shining the dull blindness of his left. Cóic’s iridescent gold scale, embedded in the burn scars at his temple, almost glowing in the dull light as if to make up for all the harm its presence had caused.
“Let me think on it.”
John reached out and clasped Scott’s arm. No words were said, but then none were needed.
Both men startled at a loud thump on the door. It opened slowly and Virgil, followed by Alan, ushered the young Viking into the room.
At least timing might be opportune.
“Ah, Hiccup.” He limped towards the boy. “I’m glad to see you up and about.”
A big black nose pushed open the door wide. The young black fury stepped into the room; green eyes wary as he slunk up beside his rider.
“And Toothless. You are both welcome to our clochán.”
The Viking’s expression was curiosity itself. He dipped his head. “Thank you for your hospitality.”
There was no humility or fear and Scott received the impression that Hiccup was used to speaking with nobility.
Fair enough.
It was obvious this room was where the decisions were made. Despite their sometimes nomad existence, John made a point to remind Scott exactly who he was by decking the meeting hall with drapery from home.
But no matter if his brothers now thought him Flaithri, Scott would never consider himself king while hope remained and he made a point to ignore the ornate chair Virgil insisted they lug across the oceans vast. It was their father’s, not Scott’s and it sat at the head of the hall, ever empty.
Scott preferred the wooden chairs they made from whatever tree they could find locally. Even a cold rock would be better.
He gestured Hiccup over to a table at one side of the room. “Let us sit and share news.” And he didn’t need Virgil’s pointed glare and his leg to know that he needed to sit down before his brother called in Máthair Chriona and she decided to stew him alive for ignoring her advice.
He limped over and sat beside Hiccup.
And no, neither of his brothers left the room. Virgil sat with him and John stood behind as if he was some kind of protective sentinel.
The night fury made a point of sitting beside the young Viking, strategically placing his body directly between Scott and his rider.
Just as defensive as Óen. A glance at John and he found a frown on his brother’s face. And that would be a yes on the same level of defiance to Cóic. No doubt the matriarch had told him to step back but the fury had ignored her.
Interesting.
Hiccup was watching all of them and again, Scott was again struck with the impression that the boy knew nobility. Likely was nobility.
“Virgil says Toothless needs time to rest his wings before you return home. You are welcome to stay with us for that time. I would be interested to hear your tale, get to know a little of you and your people.”
Hiccup straightened. “And I would be very interested to get to know you as well. Your dragons…your night fury. Where did you find him?”
Scott let his shoulders relax. “Óen was my father’s.”
Alright. Time for another Backlog Report. May ‘24
As always, thoughts are below.
Etrian Mystery Dungeon
Being completely honest, I didn’t quite know what to expect with this one. While I know that Mystery Dungeon is a larger series than its iconic crossovers with Pokémon, I wasn’t sure how the formula would work when melded to a different series, especially one as anti-roguelike as Etrian Odyssey.
I enjoyed how the game played out as a shrunken-down version of EO’s team and character building. I liked the idea of locking a dungeon’s layout. IMO, that was a nice way to find a middle ground between EO’s mapping and MD’s random generation.
In a word, I liked it. Do I think it’s a good game? Sure. Do I think it’s a great game? Unfortunately not.
The narrative is painfully sparse. While Etrian Odyssey is known for its sparse narratives, I was hoping for something more along the lines of Etrian Odyssey Untold. It seems perfectly fine for most of it, but the ending feels distinctly undercooked, with the main antagonist not having even a single word of dialogue.
While I locked the combat, it doesn’t feel as deep as could be. For that matter, having the FOE’s require status ailments for any damage to be down just feels like an extra bit of restriction. I don’t like it when customizable games like this have a built-in wrong answer.
The soundtrack is also a mixed bag. This game does have my favorite rendition of The End of Raging Waves, many of the tracks are either unfitting, loop too often, or both. (EO2’s FOE theme was not meant to be an exploration track dammit!)
I enjoyed this game as a whole. But solid gold, it is not.
Final Fantasy XII; The Zodiac Age
To start with, who talks about this game?
No, really, who talks about this game? Who wakes up in the morning, offers their daily prayers to the Ashelia B’nargin Dalmasca shrine kept in the closet, and walks out the door thinking “Oh boy, I cannot wait to spend another day telling people about my favorite game of all time: Final Fantasy XII.” (You can’t hear me through the post, but I’m laughing rn because that is a sentence that has never been said.)
FfXII is in a weird place in the series. It isn’t as foundational to the series as the first four, nor as widely popular as VI, VII, and X. It doesn’t quite generate the same vitriol from disappointed fans as XIII, XV, and to a lesser extent, II and VIII. (Btw, playing VIII, and it is just fine.) Even it’s immediate precursor XI is of more value as an object of curiosity in a “What would a FF MMO look like before they made XIV good?” Hell, even when discussing the more overlooked hidden gems among the series, it still has less fans than IX and V. The most people seem to think about this game, myself included before I actually played it, is “Well I know there’s a X, and XIII is supposed to be the Worst Game Evar, so logically there has to be two more in between there.” For that matter, I think the reason why XIII has so many design choices it does, is because XII is also so very much XII.
Looking at the game as a whole, I think it’s easy to see why this one slipped so hard under the radar. Final Fantasy XII is not a game that presents itself all that well. That’s not to say it looks bad or plays bad. If anything the world design is gorgeous. But it is a game that takes a while to reveal the true appeal.
Truthfully, this was one of my first purchases for the switch, alongside Fire Emblem Three Houses and Digimon Story CyberSleuth. (Incidentally, CyberSleuth is a really really good monster catcher game and you should go play it.) Over two years and 60 hours, I explored the world of Ivalice.
The gambits are a great bit of customization. They involve you in the decision-making and let you fine tune a party that functions well enough to tear through superbosses. But it takes until the third hour at least for you to get enough to really start playing around with the system, and even then, it sometimes isn’t as refined as you’d like it to be. Multiple times I wished I could add a second condition to a certain action. Sometimes when playing, I jokingly thought to myself “Man, this gambit system is groundbreaking. Now if only it could be included in a game where combat was fun in its own right.” Why hello there Unicorn Overlord :D!
Playing this game, it felt like I was in conversation with it. One where I wanted it to be something that it wasn’t.
“Do you want to play a game where the main fun of combat doesn’t come from combat itself but by refining your strategies and party-comp?”
“That sounds vague and abstract, but I’m willing to work with it.”
“How about an upgrade/skill tree style of system that restricts you from using equipment until you unlock the very specific ability to use it, and all of the would-be stat boosts are also abstract and don’t actually change your numbers?”
“That just sounds like the Sphere Grid from X, but worse in every conceivable way. Will I receive weapons that don’t benefit any of my party members’ jobs?”
“You’re guaranteed to.”
“Shit.”
“Okay, how about a political drama set in a diverse and expansive world, with a really cool magic-science aesthetic and a culture that isn’t just Europe-but-fancy?”
“That actually sounds pretty cool. You’re going to tie in this grand overarching narrative with individual character arcs that flesh out both person and world right?”
“. . . Kind of. Think less ‘Characters driving plot’ and more along the lines of ‘Plot happens to characters.’”
Briefly touching on the characters: I like most of them, but I wish there was more actually between them. Vaan makes a friendship comment to Ashe in the very late game at it feels almost completely undeserved because These People Don’t Interact. As for Vaan himself, I talked briefly with a mutual of mine about it, and I repeat here. I don’t hate Vaan. I just wish he had more going for him as a protagonist. I kept waiting for him to be an interesting or engaging character and he only had around three moments of substance in the whole game. He has a very undercooked revenge story that lasts for barely 5 hours with sidequests, and beyond that his main job in the party is to Not Know Things, and be wowed by all the pretty sights. There’s an argument to be made about how X did something similar with Tidus, but the key difference there is that Tidus is actually engaging of a character, with a character arc that lasts the whole game, and whose ignorance is used to provide the player and the party extra perspective, even coming to challenge the status quo.
The soundtrack is also not my favorite. Not that it has many bad tracks, just not many that really stick. I still hold that FFIV has one of the best soundtracks in the series. Both this game and Etrian Mystery Dungeon suffer from a common problem with the soundtrack, and it’s an unfortunate side effect of how these games are designed. Seemless integration of combat into exploration also means that there’s very little dedicated combat music, so you’d better enjoy listening to those world themes because they aren’t going anywhere.
For all that FFXII does that doesn’t jell with me completely, I should have hated this game. Either that or forgotten about it like everyone else. Honestly, if I had a wider selection of games in my early Switch library, I might have done just that. And yet for all my grievances with this game, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. I loved exploring the world of Ivalice. Even when I finished this game, I’m not entirely sure I was ready to say goodbye to it. However I also really really wanted to start on Harvestella, so off to the very short and underwhelming final dungeon I went.
If you enjoy Xenoblade as a series, I feel like you owe it to yourself to try out Final Fantasy XII. It might not be anyone’s favorite game of all time, but it is worth the time spent.
professional organizations for classics
this is by no means a comprehensive list of every Classics-oriented professional society in the world, but it's a pretty sizeable list. google around and see if you can find more that suit your interests! as you can tell from this list, theres a society or organization for practically every subfield within Classics. a lot of these societies also offer scholarships and grants.
based on my experience as an american, most of these are going to be based in the US; any that are international or outside the US will be indicated in blue. each state also typically has its own state-wide association (i know california has two distinct associations for different part of the state and new york has several, with some of them specifically geared toward NYC.
General Organizations
Society for Classical Studies (SCS)- one of the biggest Classical Studies organizations in the world, a catch-all for all subfields of Classical Studies and Classical Archaeology (including but not limited to Mediterranean prehistory, late antiquity, early medievalism, Near Eastern Studies, etc.) *INTERNATIONAL*
Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS)- the largest regional North American Classical organization (31 US states and 3 Canadian territories are included, divided into smaller subregions) *US & CANADA*
Weekly Story Snippet!
Hello! If you don't know, I write stories sometimes, and right now I have a story that I have been working quite hard on that I am posting every weekend. I know that sometimes a whole dang story is quite a lot to read, so I had the thought that I might post just my favorite (sensible) snippet of each chapter as I post it. This way I can still share little bite-sized bits, and it also helps me to look at my writing just a little bit more critically as well. Since my Tumblr account is rather new and I'm starting this idea six chapters in, I'll give a brief (!) summary of the story so far. In this story, "Return to Eos", my KH OC Velcia is sent to Eos (From Final Fantasy XV) to help Noctis & Co. defend the world from the Heartless. The most pressing immediate threat comes from a Heartless Adamantoise, a mountain-sized turtle monster that is creating a miles-wide dust storm and destroying the region of Leide. In today's Chapter, Velcia is riding her Chocobo Ginger as she travels with Noctis & Company through the dust storm on their way North. They do a well enough job holding their own, until Velcia is ambushed by an Invisible and knocked out of their protective bubble and into the storm; and this is a bit from that scene:
---
It was impossible for Velcia to know how far away she'd been sent from the others, but her momentum was stopped abruptly when she slammed into a rock. She scrambled onto her hands and knees, reflexively gasping for air but finding very little else but sand coming into her mouth. She choked and sputtered, holding the fabric of her tunic sleeve over her mouth to serve as a filter.
The sounds of the Heartless were fast approaching and Velcia held her hand out to summon her fallen Keyblade, but before she could a large, black shadow landed directly in front of her with a sickening thud. She looked up at the towering figure, just barely registering the pointed yellow eyes of the Invisible before it kicked her flat to the ground.
She gasped and coughed again as she hit the ground, but above her she could see the dark beast raising its blade for the kill. She rolled to the side as the blade pierced the earth, then began to send a flurry of flames from her hands to try to disorient it. The Invisible was undeterred and quickly pinned her down with its foot, cackling again.
Suddenly, a loud "KA-WEH!" broke through the howling wind, and Ginger jumped through the storm talons-first onto the Invisble's back, grappling tightly onto the beast with its sharp claws. The Invisible howled and shook as it tried to break free, but the mighty Chocobo was determined to protect Velcia and began to furiously rip the Heartless to pieces with its beak and claws.
Velcia quickly scrambled back to her feet, holding her sleeve to her mouth once more to avoid heaving in mouthfuls of dust as she tried to catch her breath. Her Keyblade came to hand and she called out for Ginger to move aside, and as soon as the Chocobo was clear she incinerated what little was left of the furious Invisible with a pillar of holy light.
---
Thanks for stopping by and reading this far. If you liked this snippet and would like to read the rest, Chapter 6 of Return to Eos can be found on AO3 and FF.net (Along with the preceding chapters, of course!) Archive of our Own - Chapter 6 Fanfiction.net - Chapter 6 Hope you have a great weekend!
Adamantus (8/12)
Adamantus | saratogaroad rating: G+ total wordcount: 15,328 characters: Aulea Lucis Caelum, Regis Lucis Caelum, Noctis Lucis Caelum, Ardyn Lucis Caelum relationships: Aulea/Regis, Aulea & Noctis other tags: Mother-Son Relationship, Character Death, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence warnings: Character Death Starts The Plot
When Noctis is three years old, Regis takes ill. The doctor tells her that he will recover, that all will be well.
It isn't.
Aulea Lucis Caelum is left to raise a son on her own, knowing that a Kingdom depends on her strength and will to survive.
She will not lose him, too.
=
Aulea arranges a trade with Emperor Iedolas Aldercapt of Niflheim the day after her discussion with Ardyn. In return for the halting of attacks on the wall of Insomnia and for the safety of her people in Lucis proper, she will secede all lands outside of the city of Insomnia to the Empire.
In return for Ardyn joining her cabinet and the safety of Ravus Nox Flueret, she will give Niflheim the Crystal. They do not need to know that it has lain dormant the past three years, or that there is a would be God slumbering in its core.
She doubts Iedolas' return agreement even had time to dry before he stuffed it into its official envelope and shoved it into the hands of a beaten, battered Ravus, but it is an agreement all the same. Watching Lunafreya, scarred and scared and sobbing, hold onto her brother with both hands as he weeps for the first time in she has no idea how long, Aulea tries not to wonder what Regis would have done in her stead. Would he have traded land for safety, tradition for life? She thinks she knows, but the answer curdles her stomach. She tries not to think of it.
She hasn't dreamt of him since the night of the fire. The magic of the Lucis Caelum line no longer whispers to her. Doubtlessly, it has chosen another.
Ardyn says it is fickle like that as they watch three of Niflheim's artificial soldiers load up the Crystal onto an airship of their Science division. He says a great deal many things once he is a member of the Lucis council, once the Crystal is away towards Niflheim, and none like a single word of it. Most find it too hard to believe, but knowing what she does, Aulea does not question. She seethes, instead, watching as he paces the conference room and speaks with broad gestures of his hands. More than once, Cyril or Clarus have to duck, turning aggravated glances at his back.
In what is likely a telling measure of his character, Ardyn only smiles at them as he continues to talk. It is a grand tale, one that has been woven across generations of Kings and Queens. It is his word against all of Eos' written history, and yet...
"History is written by the victors, Aulea," Her father had told her once, the words unknowingly echoed by Regis years later. Their voices ring in her ears as she listens to Ardyn speak, watches each of her trusted circle watch him in turn.
Uncaring that Cor and Asteria both look ready to rip his head off at any moment, Ardyn tells them of being gifted with the ability to heal the Scourge, which blighted the world after a war among the Gods cast the goddess Eos into a pit from which none could return her. The Healer Prince, as he was known then, and the only one with the ability to survive the glut of the God's powers combined.
He tells them of how he was chosen to rule, to be the first king, the Healer King of Lucis, only to be cast down, cast out, like so much rubbish when it came to light that the Scourge had no real cure, that it could not be removed so much as moved, from one host to another.
He turns a wide smile upon them then, teeth stained with black and eyes weeping thick, dark tears. Aulea's blood becomes ice in her veins as she realizes that he has the entire ruling council of Insomnia in the same room with him. Predator golden eyes seek her out and there is a knowing, a bone deep feeling that churns in her gut, that if he wishes them harm or worse, they would be hard-pressed to stop him. Something warm uncurls in her chest, fights back the chill, as everyone leaps to their feet, draws their weapons in defense of one another. Before blood can be shed she scrambles upwards, slams both palms to the table and yells--
"Enough!"
Her voice echoes. No one lowers their weapons, relaxes their stance. Golden eyes gleaming in black sclera, Ardyn contemplates her. He inclines his head. She swallows hard. Would that she thought he could be killed...
"Everyone," She distantly hears herself say aloud in a voice far too calm for the situation, "please. Sit. Ardyn, if you would..."
His color returns, the marks upon his skin fade like water. He begins to pace again, but no one dares to duck or flinch away any longer. They all watch him with sharp, angry eyes as he continues his tale.
His solution, the one that does not hinge upon Noctis marching to his death, is surprisingly simple: Free Eos from her prison and banish the Scourge with her light. Otherwise, if it is allowed to go unchecked, it will spread like a plague and plunge their world into darkness. It is like something out of a fable, a tale told to children to ensure they pray and never turn their backs upon the Six.
Unsurprisingly, none of her trusted circle believe a word he has said. Normally quiet Clarus actually starts to yell as Ardyn stands on the opposite side of the table from Aulea, his golden eyes only on her. Clarus is going red as she raises a hand, gestures for him to be calm, to wait, and meets Ardyn's gaze.
"And where, precisely, is this Eos located?"
"In the depths of Pitioss," he returns, "A rather nasty little pit of hellfire in the mountains of Cleigne." He waves a hand in the air. "Full of all manner of traps and stumbling blocks, not to mention locked to all but the heirs of Lucis themselves."
"Then why haven't you gone in and done away with this mess?" Cyril asks acerbically, his weight shifted towards Aulea, "You are of the line of Lucis, are you not?"
"A point to the gentleman for his knowledge of history," Ardyn grins, all white teeth this time, "but seeing as I was cast out, I am no longer of such a venerated house. No," he looks back to Aulea, "That honor belongs to one alone now."
The ice returns to her veins.
"Noctis."
Ardyn nods. That same glimmer of something she could not name from when he first told her half of this returns. It sits heavy in her stomach as he stands up straight, the very image of a modern scholar.
"Correct," He says, looking away when she makes a keening noise in the back of her throat. He looks from Cor to Clarus to Cyril to Asteria and then back to Aulea, all hint of playfulness gone. "The young Prince must enter the place alone, descend to its depths without losing his mind, and restore Eos from her slumber." He shrugs. "A tall order for anyone to undertake, let alone an untrained youngling."
Cor growls something about how the boy is barely ten, not even entering puberty, but Aulea's mind is turning elsewhere. She knows the prophecy to be true, one way or another. Bahamut's words still ring within her skull, and should this tale be a falsehood Noctis must be prepared to face that. Regardless, she does not think Niflheim will leave them in total peace for long. The crystal, Regis once said, powered only the Wall. The magic of the line of Lucis was through the Ring and the spirits within.
She still has the Ring, hidden in her nightstand for a time when Noctis sits the throne. As such, its magic remains, waiting for a proper user to call upon it. She cannot use it, cannot warp as she saw Regis do--and thank Shiva for that since he first warped into a tree atop her head!--but Noctis...she closes her eyes and prays that she is doing the right thing.
"Then train him," She says over Cor's grumbling. Ardyn looks at her, and she does not flinch away. "If this plan hinges upon Noctis, then make sure he is capable of doing it."
Of killing Ardyn, should the unthinkable come to pass. She holds Ardyn's gaze for a long moment, the entire world seeming to hold its breath, before he smiles.
"Thy will be done," He says with a deep bow and a hand pressed to his chest. "Your Majesty."
And then he walks from the room, shutting the door behind him. For another moment, Aulea forces herself to breathe. It feels as if she has just gone three rounds with a Behemoth and come away unscathed, but with the beast alive behind her. She must keep moving, must keep them all moving.
"Cyril, Asteria" She says before the sound of the door clicking shut has even finished echoing through the room, "Check the archives for anything that can verify his claims. Cor, seek out Weskham and Cid," Her eyes narrow at the doorway. "Make doubly sure we missed nothing in our search for the Accursed."
"Aulea," Asteria says quietly, "What of what he said? Accursed or otherwise, you don't truly believe his tale, do you?"
"I don't know," Aulea replies, gathering her skirts and beginning to stand. She needs to check on the Flueret children, ensure that Ravus is alright. Needs to see that Nyx understands Ardyn will be teaching Noctis but that makes him no less a threat.
She needs to see her son.
"But?" Clarus prompts her even as he stands up at her side.
"But," And she looks across the table where Ardyn lay his hands, no marks upon the marble to prove he was ever there, "our options are limited. We will make of this what we can and proceed from there." She looks to each of them in turn, sees the determination in their eyes, and nods firmly.
"You each have your orders," She says in a tone more firm than she feels, "Now go."
Each bows, a hand across their chest.
"Yes, your Majesty."
(When she finds Noctis an hour later, there is a hint of nervousness that clings to him even as he beams at her, even as he tells her of how Chancellor Izunia is a distant cousin and can use the warping magic his father could, and he said he'd teach Noctis and isn't that great!
She smiles at her son, a ten year old bundle of energy, and tries to squash the instinct to bundle him up, take him away from Ardyn's knowing look, from Nyx's barely contained protective rage.
Yes, she tells him, It's certainly excellent indeed.
Watching as Ardyn begins his first lesson, Aulea cannot shake the feeling that, one way or another, this will lead to heartbreak.
She just hopes it isn't Noctis' heart that is going to break before this all over.)
what are your fave mobile games??
to be honest i don't really play that many at the same time but ill talk historically, it makes the most sense anyway. btw this got really long
OG show by rock - one of the most fun mobage rhythm games EVER, the portait orientation 3 button setup looked deceptively easy but it has some of the most evil, vile beatmaps ive ever seen in a mobile game. AND THAT'S CRAZY!!! never gonna forgive sanrio for killing it and making its successor a shitty bandori clone (og sb69 was bound to die anyway bc it had insane rarity creep, but the cheap seeming bandori clone successor that didn't even have half the original bands at the time of EoS two years into launch was a huge slap to the face). the art in the cards was so much more charming than the ones in the new game, they weren't bad but you, me, her, he, them, everyone, we all KNOW what had more soul. i think the only thing the new game had over the old one is the interactive aspect via the homescreen live2d. also cause yasu was in it
fate/grand order - still my forever game, its a game where i dont feel pressure to do anything, you can use anyone you love. i can stop playing for weeks and come back and not feel an insane sense of FOMO which is an issue with a lot of newer mobage. i think a lot of people outsource their opinion on fgo exclusively from negative opinions which makes me kinda sad. the story is great, you can pick up the game at any time, and to those who find that kind of thing important: farming gems is easy. i say give it a shot yourself. ofc there are questionable things given the original source and its origins, not to mention the premise. but i do believe that despite its flaws i think people should reevaluate it fairly and not base it on the time they downloaded NA for 10 minutes and didn't roll an ssr right away after 20 rolls.
mahoutsukai no yakusoku - i'll be honest i have chosen not to play the game properly until an english version comes out bc i do not want to play a clicker in a language i am not very proficient in. HOWEVER. unironically one of the best stories i've read in mobage history, characters are great, i think it has wide appeal and the devs seem to understand that "joseimuke" paradoxically is something that can be enjoyed by all kinds of people (also it is a series that is kind to both fujoshi and yumejoshi. coexisting peacefully afaik). super recommend the story if you like magic, worldbuilding and interesting characters!!! bunta is a great writer. im a fan of idolish7 as well so i can vouch (also you can select your protag's gender which isn't crazy but in a game like this, i super appreciate it)
#compass - horrible game don't play this
love live school idol festival - i want you idol twitter and adjacent cunts to put respect to her name. RESPECT. SIF has never gotten her flowers from any of you facetious little slimeballs and you can deny it all you want but not only was this the blueprint but it also was probably what got you into the things you like in the first place. in a world where every other rhythm game is a bandori clone, i smile knowing SIF2 will keep the spirit of SIF alive (hopefully). the cards were cute, mu's discography is certified classic and anyone denying it in 2023 hates fun, and despite how archaic it was and its MANY flaws, i believe firmly that it deserves respect not only as an idol game but as a mobage in general. it really broke ground being localized when it was.
nikke - definitely top 10 most shocking things of the century that i played this and am still playing. its uh, very flawed, the wall sucks and once you hit that plateau in power level the struggle to catch up to content power walls is kinda depressing, but it has a lot of heart that keeps me logging in and talking to my girls. it's still unabashedly horny (though its a trick actually, a lot of the characters are more covered up than expected and it REALLY pisses a lot of the game's fanbase off), but i'm really enjoying the story. i think my pleasant surprise is so insanely high that it deserves a spot on here-- i think if you let it cook it mostly won't disappoint you. i love most of the characters :) korean kamige
argonavis AAside - i miss you. argonavis still lives, so i do not mourn what is living, but dabues was a special little game because it did not contain the evils of bandori. the gacha was fair, the spark ceiling was 100 rolls(!), but it was mismanaged from the start, fuck dena. im sad the new game will be a clicker but i will be there for argonavis no matter what. was pretty much what garupa should strive to be in terms of A GAME but unfortunately such days do not come to pass.
honorable mention cause its EOSing soon probably and im too bitter to talk about it positively rn given the current shitshow the jp version is in (ily global): vanguard zero, also megido72 because i only started playing it in december but im enjoying it a lot so far. i guess dream!ing also gets a mention. i will not elaborate
this is a postscript but i've played a lot of kusoge for tapjoy rewards and let me tell you. people playing regular well known japanese/korean/chinese mobage do not know the shit and crap that comes from the dregs of the play/app store. you do not know what a kusoge is until you've grinded earnestly and faithfully in shit like state of survival for an entire month. after those experiences i have Truly learned what it means to be a shit game
Time-Lapse Photography: Cameras, Duration, and Best Choices
Time-lapse photography is a captivating art that allows us to condense hours, days, or even years into a few seconds of mesmerizing visuals. It’s a technique that has gained immense popularity in recent years, thanks to the advancements in camera technology and the ease of sharing these stunning creations on social media. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve deeper into the world of time-lapse photography, focusing on the cameras you should consider, the optimal duration for your time-lapses, and the best time-lapse camera to make your time-lapse projects truly stand out.
The Magic of Time-Lapse Photography
Before we delve into the technical aspects, let’s take a moment to understand the enchantment behind time-lapse photography. At its core, time-lapse photography is the art of capturing a series of still images at specific intervals and then playing them back as a sequence. This technique condenses time, revealing subtle movements and transformations that are otherwise imperceptible to the naked eye.
Imagine watching a flower bloom, the clouds dance across the sky, or a bustling cityscape transform from day to night in just a few seconds. Time-lapse photography allows us to witness these beautiful moments in a way that traditional photography or video cannot.
Choosing the Right Camera
Selecting the right camera is the cornerstone of successful time-lapse photography. Your choice of camera will greatly influence the quality and flexibility of your time-lapse projects. Here are some considerations to keep in mind when choosing your camera:
1. DSLR or Mirrorless Cameras
DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) and mirrorless cameras are the preferred choices among time-lapse enthusiasts. They offer interchangeable lenses, manual settings, and excellent image quality. These cameras allow you to have full control over your shots, enabling you to adjust exposure settings to capture the perfect image. Some top choices in this category include the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and the Sony Alpha a7 III.
2. Compact Cameras
Compact cameras are more portable and user-friendly, making them a great option for beginners or those who want a more straightforward experience. Despite their smaller size, many compact cameras offer impressive time-lapse capabilities. Models like the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VII and the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III are excellent choices for those on the go.
3. GoPro Action Cameras
For outdoor time-lapses or capturing extreme conditions, GoPro action cameras are unbeatable. They are rugged, waterproof, and can capture stunning 4K time-lapses. The GoPro HERO9 Black, for example, is a great option for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts.
4. Smartphone Cameras
Don’t underestimate the power of your smartphone. Many modern smartphones offer built-in time-lapse modes that can produce impressive results. Apps like Hyperlapse and Lapse It Pro further enhance your smartphone’s time-lapse capabilities. This accessibility means that anyone with a smartphone has the potential to explore the world of time-lapse photography.
Setting the Duration
The duration of your time-lapse can significantly impact its visual appeal and storytelling. Here are some guidelines to help you determine the ideal duration for your project:
1. Short Time-Lapses (1-10 seconds)
Short time-lapses, typically lasting between 1 to 10 seconds, are ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects. These include scenes like traffic, bustling cityscapes, or waves crashing on the shore. To create a sense of urgency and motion in your time-lapse, use shorter intervals between shots, such as 1-2 seconds.
2. Medium Time-Lapses (10 seconds – 2 minutes)
Medium-length time-lapses are versatile and can capture a wide range of subjects. Shooting at intervals of 2-5 seconds works well for most scenarios, including cloud movements, construction projects, or natural landscapes. This duration provides enough context for viewers to appreciate the subtle changes taking place.
3. Long Time-Lapses (2 minutes or more)
For slower transformations like the blooming of flowers, the changing of seasons, or the transition from day to night, longer time-lapses are the way to go. Shoot at intervals of 5-10 seconds or more to create smooth and captivating sequences. Longer time-lapses allow viewers to witness gradual changes and immerse themselves in the beauty of the unfolding story.
Best Practices for Stunning Time-Lapses
Creating breathtaking time-lapses goes beyond just selecting the right camera and setting the duration. To ensure your time-lapse stands out and ranks well among others, here are some best practices to follow:
1. Stable Support
Stability is crucial in time-lapse photography. Even the slightest camera movement can ruin a sequence. Invest in a sturdy tripod or specialized time-lapse equipment to keep your camera stable throughout the shoot. If you’re shooting in windy conditions or on unstable terrain, consider using sandbags or anchor your tripod to prevent vibrations.
2. Manual Mode
While some cameras offer automatic time-lapse modes, shooting in manual mode is often preferred. Manual mode gives you complete control over exposure settings, including aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This control allows you to adapt to changing lighting conditions and maintain consistent image quality throughout your time-lapse sequence.
3. Intervalometer
To capture precise intervals between shots, invest in an intervalometer or use your camera’s built-in time-lapse feature. Intervalometers allow you to set the duration between each frame, ensuring that your time-lapse flows smoothly and consistently. Be sure to calculate the interval based on the duration you want to achieve.
4. Post-Processing
Editing is a crucial step in time-lapse photography. Use software like Adobe Premiere Pro or LRTimelapse to enhance colors, remove flicker, and add creative effects. Post-processing can elevate the visual quality of your time-lapse video and help you achieve a polished and professional look.
5. Storytelling
While technical aspects are important, remember the storytelling element in your time-lapse. Think about the story you want to tell and the emotions you want to evoke in your audience. A compelling narrative can elevate your work and engage your viewers on a deeper level.
Conclusion
Time-lapse photography is a captivating art form that requires creativity, patience, and the right equipment. By carefully choosing your camera, setting the duration effectively, and following best practices, you can create stunning time-lapse sequences that captivate viewers and stand out in the world of online content. So, pick up your camera, experiment with different subjects and durations, and embark on a journey to capture the passage of time like never before. Your next viral time-lapse masterpiece might just be a click away, waiting to amaze and inspire audiences around the world.
Most would have thought it was Gordon’s idea.
But it wasn’t.
That didn’t stop Gordon from embracing it and having the time of his life.
They took Thunderbird Two, but for once Virgil wasn’t her pilot – Scott declared that there was no way in hell he was piloting while wearing that.
The reason for taking Thunderbird Two was because while everyone knew of Tracy Industries, EVERYONE knew about International Rescue and they wanted to make a point.
And have a little fun on the side.
According to Gordon.
Virgil just wanted to make sure they were seen.
They were.
Hard to miss a 406 tonne cargo plane landing in Oxford Street, Sydney.
It was February so the city had been roasting in summer most of the day, but according to Gordon who claimed to be very knowledgeable about the weather hereabouts, that only made the nights a great time to party.
Sam and Liam had hitched a ride.
Sam was about to lose his mascara simply through vibrating in excitement.
He had grabbed Gordon quite roughly and expressed his amazement at getting a ride on a ‘real Thunderbird’!
The fact Gordon had actually taken him down in Thunderbird Four earlier in the week with much less reaction had the aquanaut frowning fit to bust a blood vessel.
But! There was fun to be had.
He’d roast him later.
As Two touched the tarmac with the barest of thumps, Scott ran through shutdown procedure before turning to his family and friends.
“Okay, we’re doing this with style and with as much impact as possible. Keep it decent.” He frowned at Gordon and Alan who shrugged innocently. “But shout loud. We need the world to know our opinion on this and that both Tracy Industries and International Rescue support this all the way.”
“FAB!” It was said unanimously and with many grins.
Scott rolled his eyes, but stood up with the rest of them.
This was going to be GREAT! Gordon bounced in his seat.
It took quite a bit to get themselves all down to the module. Grandma’s feathers got hooked on the hatchway between, but they managed to straighten her out.
Outside the crowds were swelling. The media was already there. Scott had arranged publicity for this arrival and they’d timed it perfectly as the sun was just hitting the horizon.
The city was buzzing.
Scott lowered the module and Two rose onto her struts.
The ramp lowered, the thick curtains Virgil had hung behind it fluttered as the evening heat wafted in.
And yes, curtains in a cargo plane had prompted Gordon to declare that Virgil was finally a full-blown soccer mom with the van to match.
Virgil clapped him up the ear.
Gordon still helped him string them up in module two.
That was why they were more spangly than when Grandma first sewed them up. What’s a bit of glue, glitter and a few sequins between family?
Besides Scotty said to shout loud.
Gordon was good at that.
His eldest brother was the first to step through the curtains and into the spotlight shining down underneath Two’s nose. They had their own stage, Eos had it streaming to the networks and Brains had hooked up their collar comms to Two’s speakers.
The crowd muttered into silence; eyes wide.
Scott was dressed to the nines. Black tie, expensive everything, shoulders broad, expression as suave and energetic as ever.
He held his arms wide. “I am Scott Tracy, President of Tracy Industries and Commander of International Rescue. We are here to show our support of our LGBTQIA+ community.” He smiled. “And to have a little fun.”
He stepped back and to one side. “I’d like to present my family.”
Kayo took the first step. Dressed in heels and a slinky deep blue-grey dress, she slipped between the curtains and out into the spotlight. She said not a word, but her expression held threat and several in the crowd took a step back.
And were equally startled when she smiled and stepped over to stand beside Scott.
He whispered. “Keeping them guessing?”
Cherry red lips curved mischievously. “Always.”
Next was Grandma, not one for the spotlight and rarely seen by the public, she stepped through the curtains in heels as high as Kayo’s, but her dress was more purple feathers and sequins than anything else. She had the headdress of a Las Vegas showgirl and she wasn’t afraid to shake it around. Her hair had been curled beautifully on top of her head and its silver was echoed throughout the trailing dress.
A roar rose in the crowd and a grin as powerful as Kayo’s lit up beneath a pair of sparkling glasses.
A touch of a curtsey and she moved to stand beside Kayo.
Next came Dad. Where Grandma was the matriarch, Dad wasn’t afraid of his patriarchal duties. He stepped out in a dark pin-stiped suit and a full-on top hat. He could have owned the Las Vegas casino his mother was playing at, rainbow hat band included.
His grin was fit to burst as the crowd erupted into an even bigger roar – everyone knew Colonel Jeff Tracy, barely anyone had seen him since he had come back from the dead.
And he was just dapper.
He twirled his cane and stepped over to stand by Grandma.
Gordon couldn’t wait any longer and burst through the curtains.
Unfortunately, his plans involving sequins and glitter foiled his entrance a little as they caught on the sequins and glitter all over his body. There was a struggle for a few moments and the loss of several gold sparkly bits, but a large hand reached through from behind and finally King Neptune was free.
And mostly naked.
But then Gordon was used to being mostly naked and hey, he had extra sequins and shimmering body paint.
Glittery trident in hand, he danced into the spotlight and wiggled and jiggled, and hands raised yelled out “Good evening, Sydney!” at the top of his voice.
Sydney answered back with a roar.
It took a long time to die down. In the meantime, Gordon made a point of rushing to the edges of the crowd and shaking as many hands as he could, grinning like a loon. As soon as he stepped out of the spotlight, it became very obvious that he also had LEDs strung amongst the sequins and he glittered like the stars on the ocean.
Well, those were Virgil’s words, not his, but he was going to run with it anyway.
“Okay, so I guess you all know my brother Gordon.” Scott’s voice had a grin in it.
Sydney answered with a wave of laughter.
Sam and Liam used this moment to slip out between the curtains. Neither were dressed much out of the norm. Sam had his usual pink board shorts, but had put on some mascara and lippy for the occasion. Liam was sporting a smooth fedora and some of Sam’s lippy prominently on his neck.
It was fifty-fifty he was aware of it.
Gordon voted he was.
Liam was a quiet one. Like John.
Which is why you had to keep an eye on both of them.
Speaking of which, John followed them out. His space brother was being extremely tolerant for the cause.
He was simply wearing his uniform.
In truth he needed it having only come down from space a few hours earlier. It had been iffy any of them could make it and it had been close. Two was leaving a little bit of mud on the pavement tonight as Virgil hadn’t had a chance to clean her footings from the last rescue in Peru.
But he was determined they should all get there.
And they did.
But it meant John had to wear his uniform. In Gordon’s opinion it had been partly tactical. It wasn’t that John didn’t support the cause, it was more the glaring attention and ‘Gordon, if you think I’m wearing that, you’ve got another thing coming’.
John wasn’t really the costume wearing type.
Or it might be he wasn’t really the Gordon-type-costume wearing type, but Gordon hadn’t had a chance to experiment because Virgil had intervened and told him leave John alone or he’d pull his sequins off one by one without the glue dissolvent.
The glare from under those monstrous eyebrows got the point across clearly.
But despite everything and especially despite the uniform, John looked magnificent. He wasn’t wearing his familiar golden baldric. In its place was a voluptuous swath of billowing and glittering rainbow material. It was wrapped across his body, around his thigh, and pinched tight on his shoulder with a large silver pin sporting the IR logo. The material then swept over his back, billowing out behind him as he walked.
And to Gordon’s surprise, John had actually also put on some mascara, eyeliner, and swept his red hair back with some gel, smoothing it to his scalp.
If anything, he had an ancient Egyptian air about him, austere and regal.
Gordon approached him as he stepped away from the spotlight. “Nicely done, bro, nicely done.”
John’s lips twitched to side with a smile and Gordon’s eyes widened when he realised there was also lipstick and a little foundation happening up there on his big brother’s face.
“Worth the effort.” John smiled and turned to stand side by side with the rest of the family.
Gordon arched an eyebrow and smiled.
He didn’t miss the murmurings of the crowd either as the words ‘the voice who answers’ and ‘eye in the sky’ bounced around the darkening street.
Gordon smiled even more. The world knew all his brothers.
Which is why the crowd’s reaction was a surprise when Brains slipped through the curtains, possibly pushed gently from behind. He looked out, wide-eyed, through a pair of glasses Virgil had bought him specially for the occasion.
Dad had taken Brains shopping as well, and he was nicely dressed in a deep burgundy three-piece suit. He smiled hesitantly as Sydney rumbled and whispered about the creator of the Thunderbirds.
The internet had a way of leaking news into the world at large, and informally, many knew of Doctor Hiram Hackenbacker and his amazing achievements.
Rarely seen outside a lecture theatre, this was a rare opportunity for eyes to be laid upon the quiet man.
Surrounded by ferocious Tracys.
Of course, that was the moment Alan decided to jump through the curtains and turn ferocity into something more like a terrier chewing on ankles.
Dressed head to toe in a glaringly bright red suit, he had Brandon on his arm, dressed in an equally glaring white.
Gordon was getting Lewis Carroll vibes, complete with playing cards.
Alan wore no makeup and his hair was its usual pale blonde mess, but Brandon had obviously had a date with a comb and his red locks were tidied.
They were both wearing sunglasses at night.
Really, guys?
Brandon, likely with help from Alan, had upgraded his holocam and it was hovering at a distance no doubt broadcasting to several million followers.
Scott had allowed it. Scott wanted as much coverage as possible, so he wasn’t going to say no.
Brandon hadn’t shut up for over an hour after that.
Scott had left the room within five minutes.
Gords quite liked Brandon.
Alan and Brandon swept around the edges of the crowd swapping hoots and catcalls. Scott was seen to roll his eyes at least once.
But the crowd suddenly fell quiet as the light shining down from Two’s undercarriage dimmed all of a sudden.
In the module the curtains divided slowly to reveal shadows.
Multicoloured flame flickered in the darkness.
And Virgil stepped out into the night.
He was unrecognisable. Gone was the quiet brother Gordon knew and, in his place, stood a creature of fantasy.
All this was Virgil’s idea. He was the one who thought it was important they take a stand and support the cause. He was the one whose eyes lit with fire while watching the news.
Scott had had to intervene on several occasions which was not only weird because it was Virgil getting angry, but once the reason for that anger was communicated to Scott, the argument flipped and ninety-nine percent of the time Virgil then had to stop Scott from doing dastardly things.
Gordon suspected Virgil hadn’t intervened on all of Scott’s actions and there were a few Gordon actions that neither brother was ever going to find out about.
Certain things had to be done after all.
But tonight was about celebration and Virgil had gone all out.
Engineer plus artist plus heavy lifting?
Equals Virgil.
His brother was dressed in a flowing dress of iridescent green scales. Interspersed with billowing satin and tulle in varying shades of green, the skirt leapt out into an amazing train that rustled as he walked.
It all thinned at his hips and wrapped around him like a serpent, the scales following the flow of its body. It disappeared up and over Virgil’s left shoulder only rear above him.
Virgil’s right shoulder was bare except for a scattering of viridian sequins that Gordon was far too familiar with.
The green dragon’s long prehensile neck terminated in a beautifully detailed head with eyes of light and breath of rainbow fire. It ducked and hissed around Virgil, brushing across his fully mohawked hair.
Which glittered as much as the rest of him.
Virgil was also wearing makeup, lining his already dark eyes and bringing their edges to points. He stared out at the world with pools of sharp shadow and whispered with lips of green.
The crowd murmured as he shrugged his shoulders and two deep green, massive reptilian wings unfolded behind him. His arms glittered in the light from the flame above and as he stepped forward, the whole apparition moved with him.
He stood beneath his ‘bird, body ramrod straight, dragon hissing around him.
“The Tracy family supports Pride in all its forms. You should be proud to be who you are.”
Then he smirked and spoke into the silence suddenly possessing the Sydney Mardi Gras.
“Let’s party.”
Tripods for Stable and Clear Shots To achieve the sharpest and most stable shots, a tripod is necessary for any photographer. A tripod ensures that your camera is kept still, minimizing camera shake and allowing you to maximize image quality. Features to Look for in a Tripod When selecting a tripod, there are a few key features to consider. The first is weight. You want a tripod that is sturdy enough to handle your camera and lenses, but not so heavy that it's cumbersome to carry around. Another important feature is height – look for a tripod that is tall enough to suit your needs. Finally, consider the materials – aluminum is lightweight but not as stable as carbon fiber, while wood tripods offer a unique look but are heavier than other options. Advantages of a Tripod Using a tripod has several advantages beyond just stability. It allows for precise composition, as you can make small adjustments without having to move the camera. It also forces you to slow down and think more intentionally about your shots, leading to higher quality images. Additionally, a tripod can help you achieve longer exposures, which can produce stunning nighttime or motion blur images. Overall, investing in a quality tripod is essential for any serious photographer looking to capture sharp, clear shots. Filters to Enhance Your Images Capturing stunning photographs while on a Swiss excursion requires the right equipment, including filters that can enhance your images. Here are some filters you should consider: Polarizing Filter A polarizing filter reduces glare and eliminates reflections from non-metallic surfaces, such as water, glass, and foliage. This filter helps to saturate colors and deepen blue skies, making landscapes appear more vivid and crisp. Neutral Density Filter A neutral density filter reduces the amount of light entering the lens, allowing for longer exposures and creative effects, such as blurred motion. This filter is useful in bright daylight situations when you want to create a shallow depth of field or capture a flowing waterfall with a blurred effect. Graduated Neutral Density Filter A graduated neutral density filter helps to balance exposure between the sky and foreground in landscape photography. This filter has a darkened portion at the top and a clear portion at the bottom, creating a gradual transition to balance the exposure. Infrared Filter An infrared filter blocks visible light and allows only infrared light to pass through the lens. This filter creates a unique and surreal effect, turning green foliage white and the sky into a deep blue or black. Using the right filter can significantly enhance your images and help you capture the beauty of Switzerland. Don't forget to research and test filters before your trip to ensure that you have the right filter for the type of photography you want to capture. Accessories to Elevate Your Photography While a high-quality camera and lens are important for capturing stunning photos, accessories can also elevate your photography and enhance the overall experience. Here are some essential accessories to consider bringing on your Swiss excursion: Tripods A tripod is a must-have for capturing sharp and well-composed photos. It can also help you stabilize your camera in low-light situations, allowing you to use a slower shutter speed without introducing camera shake. Look for a lightweight and sturdy tripod that can handle the weight of your camera and lens. Filters Filters can help you achieve specific effects while shooting, such as reducing glare or enhancing colors. Polarizing filters can help you capture clearer images of water and skies, while neutral density filters can allow you to use a slower shutter speed in bright light. Battery Pack or Extra Batteries Don't let a dead battery ruin your photography adventure. Bring along a spare battery or a battery pack to ensure that you have enough power to last throughout the day. Remote Shutter Release A remote shutter release can help you avoid camera shake when taking long-exposure shots or self-portraits. It can also be useful for capturing wildlife or other subjects without disturbing them. Lens Cleaning Kit Clean lenses are essential for capturing sharp and clear photos. A lens cleaning kit can help you remove dust and fingerprints from your lenses, ensuring that your images are free of blurry spots and smudges. Camera Bag A good camera bag can protect your gear from bumps and scratches while also making it easy to carry. Look for a bag that is comfortable to wear and has enough room to fit your camera, lenses, and accessories. By investing in these essential accessories, you can elevate your photography and capture stunning images during your Swiss excursion.
