good morning to the 3 people in this fandom. woke up in the middle of the night to think about Victor Vale as Victor Frankenstein.

specifically the scene of Victor, alone, despairing, determined to revive Eli's cold, lifeless body.

it begins with ice and it begins with electricity.

then we have Victor faced with the monster he created by defying nature, by playing god, through sheer scientific hubris but also a desperate loneliness and an absurd, foolish little hope. Victor and his monster, doomed to chase each other in circles forever, leaving a trail of bodies in their wake. blood drips from their hands. They were dead from the beginning and they'll haunt each other forever and no one else can ever understand.

and which one of them was the monster, again?

it’s always “eli and the hawk persona as a metaphor for masculinity/the queer experience” but it’s never eli and the hawk persona as a metaphor for the neurodivergent experience and masking. hawk is CLEARLY eli’s way of masking - he is literally following a social script, adhering to social cues and speech patterns he created to look tougher out of a need to SURVIVE. he literally distances himself away from demetri who is LITERALLY THE DEFINITION of neurodivergency (misunderstanding social cues, special interests, slower development when it comes to karate) out of fear that he might be perceived as anything that isn’t his neurotypical persona.

sure we talk about it, but we don’t talk about it in the sense of how powerful that makes the bond between him and demetri - “this is who you are.” “a loser?” “my best friend. i know you think that that mohawk defined who you are. but it didn’t. not to me.” it is the most POWERFUL thing to me when we get this narrative where demetri will stand by his side not in spite of or because of his neurodivergency but just understand that it’s a part of him. no babying, no shoving one part or another down - just acceptance. and only when eli gets that acceptance is the mohawk not a mask anymore, but a facet of his own personal beliefs, dreams and interests. hell, it’s why i can finally say that YEAH - I’M LETTING HIM WEAR THE AMERICAN MOHAWK. it isn’t some persona he wears anymore like a lie - it’s his enthusiasm for his special karate interest. and i like joking about flag desecrations, so why not.

this is a very happy/positive ramble, so i’m not going to get into complaining about how more often than not the mischaracterization of eli peeves me off so bad because my brain unconsciously connected it to people infantilizing autistic characters. LET AUTISTIC CHARACTERS HAVE FLAWS AND EXPERIENCE EMOTIONAL TURMOIL IN THEIR HIGH SCHOOL JOURNEY OF SELF DISCOVERY! IT’S FUN!

“I’ll give you one more month in LA, Elliot. That’s it.”

Eli had sunken into one of the lounge chairs by the pool at his home in Los Angeles, remembering his father’s words.

It must’ve been around midnight. He stared out at the sky, wishing he could see the stars like he could in Texas. He brought the cigarette he held loosely in between his two fingers up to his lips for a drag. It wasn’t too often that he smoked — in fact, he’d gotten himself down to only one or two a week. But tonight, the weight of the future felt so… heavy.

“It should be you, Lori. To take over the ranch. Not me.”

He remembered the conversation with his older sister — what he told her. Eli had been honest. Her loyalty — her heart — was for the ranch, and had always been. Meanwhile, Eli had consistently rebelled against the responsibility he knew would be his, no matter the fight he put up.

“I like it here, Eli.”

His memory flittered over to Marisol, where it usually almost always was anyway. It was when they had visited the ranch. They had taken the horses out for a trail ride and had stopped down by one of the lakes for a picnic. The thick Pendleton blanket was laid out in the shade of one of the large trees. Mari’s head was resting in Eli’s lap. His hand was in her hair, mindlessly brushing through the soft, brunette strands.

He had opened his mouth to reply, but nothing had come. It was genuine surprise, what he’d felt. He’d never expected Mari to like it — the ranch, Texas, the heat that was somehow both dry and humid — but she was smiling. She had smiled the entire trip…

“Eli?”

Eli’s eyes snapped open to the present at the sound of Marisol’s voice.

“It’s late,” She said in a soft tone as she reached out a hand to cup the side of his face. “I want you in bed now,” Mari demanded as her plump lips curved into a little, innocent smile. Eli’s much larger hand reached up to take a hold of hers. He placed a soft, slow kiss to the back of it, then smiled up at her as he got up off the lounge chair.

He’d tell her tomorrow about moving to Texas. Tomorrow was better.

No I need to rant about it I don’t care at this point. I really REALLY don’t care if you don’t like achilles because of his actions that’s so fucking fair like really have at it keep doing what you’re doing, but PLEASE for the love of GOD stop acting like he is a shallow character without depth or reasoning. You can extend empathy and justify and moralize the actions of all your other favorite war criminals so why is it so difficult for you to actually read into his depth. It’s not like I’m asking for a lot here! Just please stop saying baseless things because you don’t like the guy. And please stop trying to moralize the actions of men in war. Specifically Hector of Troy because no he’s not the “only good man” he also killed men and taunted them as they died and despite whether or not you think he was JUST doing it to protect his city he was doing it for that reason AND because he didn’t want to be shunned as a man for not fighting and have his pride and image injured. Hector killed men viciously and liked it idk why that’s so hard for you guys to understand. And while I’m on the rant no Troy the city was also not a victim of imperialism I don’t know where the fuck that came from but I’m so tired. I’m so tired.

I just realized something -- based on your choices, both Clementine's and Louis's first direct human kill happens by accident (Eli and Dorian). Their reactions are very different though ...

Mmhmmm... if you play your cards right, Clementine can avoid directly killing the Stranger, Lee, and Kenny. I'm trying to think if there are any other opportunities where she can kill someone like that pre-ANF but I'm drawing a blank. I've replayed TFS a few times now but I haven't replayed the whole series for a long time.

But yeah, then ANF comes along and she shoots a guy, and then turns to Javi like "Okay you need to lie for me--" which most people do because it's Clementine and players often will do whatever she asks, whether it's something Javier would actually do or not. Personally, I think that's kind of a flaw with the choice, but at the same time, it can't really be helped? I don't think it's good to lie for her, honestly, even if she's really pissy about it.

Like I know it's an accident... but Clementine knows better than to point a gun at someone and pull the trigger, bad bullets or not, unless she intends to kill. Lee taught her that. She knows better. The first shot was enough to prove her point that the bullets don't fine, but then she shot again and whoops... that bullet fired, and now you have to deal with the consequences.

Even if it's not her first kill, it's still a good indication of how hardened she's become at that point. She doesn't show remorse for killing him, even if he's a prick who could've gotten her killed by giving her bad bullets, she just thinks about how she's going to get out of this: by lying.

Then there's Louis who kills Dorian and is a mess about it initially. Also an accident given Dorian snuck up behind him, but it's not like she was there for a friendly chat, y'know? He's clearly not okay afterward, but he still wants to go with Clementine to get AJ which I wish he would get more credit for.

But like I said before, Louis being one of the few in the Ericson crew who has directly killed someone is so interesting to me. Especially the way he talks about it later on, how he's glad he has it in him to kill because he gets it now, he gets that having a home means protecting it and his home isn't just Ericson anymore, his home is Clementine and AJ.
