When choosing ideal dahlia companion plants, consider those with similar sunlight and water requirements. 

Many gardeners grow herbs among their dahlias to help repel pests. Doing so will rid your garden bed of insects, so you don’t have to worry about their harming your more fragile dahlias. Herbs usually have pungent oils and scents that keep pests away: thyme, rosemary, and mint are great options.

Peonies (among other flowers like roses and geraniums) can help attract pollinators. 

You might want to consider options like nasturtiums (Tropaeolum; hardy in zones 9 to 11). These flowers are annuals in most places and known for their ability to repel a wide assortment of pests. According to the University of California, they also attract butterflies and bloom from spring until fall. Their colorful flowers are also edible.
