As we catch up on 30C30D, we want to introduce our very first community feature! Today, we're featuring Young Adult novel Roses for the Wallflower by misterpseudonym. This cover was chosen for perfectly conveying the story and genre. It has great composition, art, and even the fonts are fitting! It's definitely a cover you can imagine on a bookshelf somewhere! (Plus, pink is always a plus.)

Ever since he was twelve, local cryptozoology nerd Quinn Campbell has had three recurring daydreams: Mothman terrorizing his highschool, finally getting a picture of Bigfoot, and marrying his childhood best friend, Daniela Ryder, on a beach far, far away from here. Then the new kid in town, Eira Slate, shows up with swinging fists - earning himself detention with Dani and the reputation of 'bad boy heartthrob' quicker than Quinn can say "phony."

Now he needs to debunk every reason for his six-year crush to go for the rebel, but his investigation might be interrupted by the mystery of why Eira keeps showing up everywhere he doesn't want him. Including his head.

About the Author/Artist

As far as pen names go, Mister Pseudonym is one of the least subtle that he could’ve gone with, but his work is just about as forward. His passion for writing began in queer internet circles as a wee little lad, and has since aimed to comfort and inspire those just discovering them. Roses for the Wallflower is his first try at something novel-length, and also happens to be very different from fanfiction about half-angel half-devil skeletons. As someone still in highschool, portraying adolescence is way more difficult than it looks on paper, but he’s raring to give it a go—mostly for the tween that could’ve used a book like this one. He’s quite lucky he’s had practice writing in third person or this biography would be much more awkward.

In this revised ref, Agatha is my original character & a protagonist in my fanfic in AO3. and She begins work in Phoenix Parks, as a sweet shoppe clerk. It also happens that she meets her new friends, known as Barney, Norma, Pugsley, and Courtney, the main gang of the Deadendia books & TV show.

Personality

She has been strayed from any bad influences as a child and taught to be kind and respect others, so she’d use manners and help out whenever she can, putting others satisfaction first before her own. It makes a perfect strength into her job portfolio for customer service & her social life. As much as she’s polite for others, it lets her down to naiveness when others take her for granted, so she takes caution to whoever she gets involved with. She also keeps a calm face despite risky or awkward moments.

When growing up in her teen years, she learned to become independent to take care of herself and diligent into taking care of her family home, developing skills to clean and organize during part-time shifts and cooking her own meals. But a part of her mourns for companionship throughout the years all by herself without anybody but her father or her pets. Her lively humour and kindness helped improve her social life now that she made friends at Phoenix Parks.

Even though she gets curious over things she sees as uncommon/peculiar, her caution spikes up as she investigates before deciding whether it’s safe or not. Unbeknownst of herself, she's quite charming in personality and looks, so she'd find herself admired by others.

Biography

Agatha ‘Aggie’ Hallowes has almost lived her life in solace. Her father raised her all her life and grew up to be a kind and diligent woman, but Aggie felt bored when she grew weary of the daily routine. Not that she hated being stuck at home without anybody to hang out with, save for her cat. She only wanted to do something different and exciting for a change, so an opportunity came when she applied for a job at Phoenix Parks, the Amusement Park run and owned by B-movie star Pauline Phoenix. But after her interview, she gets dragged into a demonic ritual down at Dead End, part haunted house attraction, part portal to heaven & hell!

She made new and unlikely friends, and even got the job later on! But with everything that happened, will she manage her new normal as it goes?

Trivia

When Aggie was little, she and her dad used to own 5 rabbits, respectively named Cinnamon, Oreo, Apple, Róse, & Pepper. She’d also bring one back to her bedroom every night and cuddle with them before falling asleep.

When first speaking to someone, she’d be often referred as Lydia Deetz as she sounds like her (Winona Ryder from 1988)

Her hair is actually dyed midnight blue.

Even though she sometimes dress herself in dark clothing, her room is decorated in a lighter aesthetic; light walls, beige coloured furniture, she’s even got a plushie corner for all the stuff toys from her childhood and still collecting!

Her favourite films revolve around Dark Fantasy, Animation, and Musicals.

Okay, so I'm primarily a lurker on here. But I found out something interesting and I thought it'd be neat to share it with y'all.

So, I was doing some research for my final project about nightsisters for my Star Wars class (Yes, that is a real 3 credit course at my college) when I came across this channel. I know, it has 4k subs, and a lot of its videos range around the hundred. I didn't think this channel would be a good source. That was til I looked their archived interviews and recognized a few names of big Star Wars creators.

There's Dave Wolverton (The author of The Courtship of Princess Leia, the book which Dathomir and its witches debuted in. I actually used/referenced this in my essay), Daniel Wallace (Another big Star Wars author who wrote some essential guides), three separate interviews of John Jackson Miller (Author of the legends Kenobi book), they even got interviews with Sam Witwer and James Arnold Taylor. Forgive me for not recognizing the rest of the names, but there's just so many.

But what really got my attention was the interview with Ryder Windham, the author of The Wrath of Darth Maul, a book we Maul fans absolutely love. While I was listening, Windham said something interesting around the 23 minute mark:

" . . . someone decided that Darth Maul was a zabrak, and it was a word I made up. It has nothing - there's no history behind it beyond that . . "

This got me, honestly. The guy who wrote Maul's origin story also came up with the name of his near-human species?? Of course, because I was still iffy if this podcast was legit or not, I had to look for myself. There's not a whole lot, but I did find this article interview of Windham back 2012 about The Wrath of Darth Maul, and him coming up with zabrak was further explained:

"However, I did have an indirect impact on Maul's background. In 1998, Running Press hired me to write Star Wars: Episode I Who's Who, and for that book, Lucasfilm encouraged me to create names of species and homeworlds as well as brief biographies for various members of the Jedi Council and also the Podracers. I came up with the word Zabrak to describe Eeth Koth's species, and then another writer decided that the similarly horned-headed Darth Maul should also be a Zabrak. When I first heard a character say 'Zabrak' on The Clone Wars, I had to grin at that."

Again, this source is also weird because it's on a .net Star Wars fan site, and a lot of the punctuation is filled with questions marks rather than, you know, proper punctuation, but it's still interesting that two separate sources confirmed the same thing.

Y'all can ignore if you can't believe it; I don't blame you. Everything's linked if you wanna check them out yourself. But I thought I would share these findings because I don't think I've seen people talk about this in posts about The Wrath of Darth Maul.

Headcanons

Starting with the military, Ashton applied to the marines very early on before getting accepted into the Special Ops as a CSO and Marine Raider. Was in service for about a decade before leaving it all behind.

Ashton is always in this serious mode, small smiles come by only ever so often and fun is a hard concept to grasp. Few can bring that side of him back.

Despite a few years in, he finds it hard to decide on the mundane things in life. He has no preferences for anything really. If you ask him what his favorite food is, he probably wouldn’t know how to respond. He can’t even decide his favorite food, let alone everything else in his life. He has one constant in his life and that’s enough for him.

Being young and dumbly spontaneous, he had a tattoo on his left forearm of the solar system at 18 to just be able to look at something and feel. Remember that there are things so much bigger than themselves.

Ashton teaches- taught the bachelor’s classes once in a while and the students will often gossip on the military vibes the class had. And those that couldn’t handle it dropped the class, but the ones that do stay on, often come out of it thankful that they did.

The Outbreak brought him back into his military instincts, trying to help out where he can to protect the building still standing in protecting them, but Ashton is also one to be more willing to go out, to scout, to scavenge.

Weirdly enough, he’s still working on his research paper, apocalypse be damned, he was finishing this residency and research paper one way or another. Or perhaps he just needed some kind of normalcy, to keep moving, because he knows the idleness will destroy him.

Ashton back in his military days was a skilled jet pilot and a good shot with the highest qualified level of marksmanship. Now if only he had a plane and a gun…

rachel allison quinn was born to ryder masters and megan quinn, during a trip to miami, her parents had a struggling relationship, but she was always a bit of a daddy’s girl. she’d go with to his sets and watch him act and she felt it was something she wanted to do ever since. when she was eight years old, her father passed away and she was left with her mother and it wasn’t the most ideal, especially once her mother re-married.

she herself was a bit of a loner, she didn’t have many friends, but she always wanted to be more social. she did get close with a boy in middle school and they ended up dating before the summer ending middle school and shortly after split and she went into high school single. dealing with bullying, crushes and feeling unwelcome. school caused her battles with depression and her form of self harm was drinking. rachel was didn’t expand much and after freshman year, dropped out of school just not sure she could do it anymore. she tried home-schooling til she was 17 and got her first job, thus she was too busy and didn’t care much.

her home life quickly became too much so she wanted to make her own money, but she was a bit too young for a real job yet and thus she found and decided to try out social media with youtube, tiktok, twitter and instagram (mainly youtube & instagram). she used her channel as a fun escape, show her style and then as she started building an audience and soon it became her passion. however this wasn’t her dream and this soon started her making skits and short films to show off her acting skills. in a couple of her works she shared her singing voice and her fans became obsessed so singing became a part of her channel at times. she started making money and decided to take it further but making a single, her own original song. it did so well and soon she came out with another.

now rachel finally opened up again, to a boy she met through some friends and they got close and started dating that summer. she really felt happy with him but soon he called it quits leaving her unsure of what went wrong and she couldn’t bare it. she went to seek help to forget him and then she dove more into her work as an escape from the pain of another failed and short lived relationship. she was able to afford a place of her own and was looking for where she wanted to live, she wanted to leave brooklyn for sure. rachel was mainly looking around los angeles to further her career. it took a lot but she packed up and left for the lovely state and soon she was living in a small apartment, getting used to her new life in los angeles as she had always dreamed. it took a few months, before she was discovered and offered a contract and she jumped at the idea of making a full album. her acting dream was set aside for now.

rachel soon finished and released her first album by the age of 21 and she moved to a house and got a cat to keep her company. with the success of her first album she got to do a small tour and within a couple years she released her second album at 23. this is when she ended up moving back to new york (but to the queens area instead of brooklyn), with her cat and now she’s eagerly working on a third album. while acting is her dream, music works, she loves writing and sharing her story. now living where she does, however, she’s finally got some acting with some small roles or cameos here and there. it’s a start to getting a big role on a major movie or television show, but she’s okay for now being an influencer does music and holding off on acting for now. she’s still young and happy.

BIOGRAPHY:

Ryder Sydney comes from a long line of established fighters, from bare-knuckle boxers to more recently mixed martial artists there’s not one generation that hasn’t been involved somehow. That being said, the relationship with the majority of his family is nonexistent. His family, particularly his father and uncles, only acted as relentless coaches. All the siblings were trained at a young age to keep their renowned family name relevant in the industry. In their household praise was rare as there was always something to improve on and “punishments” were harsh which Ryder, always the most rebellious one, was the brunt of. If there’s one thing that runs in their family and it’s violence and impulsiveness so it’s no surprise that he’s carried those traits from a young age too. 

TW FOR DEATH, DRINK DRIVING, AND CAR CRASH MENTIONS: Despite everything that has happened in Ryder’s life, the thing that impacts them the most is the night that one of their older brothers died. The person they were the closest to. They remember everything so vividly from him coming to pick them up in his new car, to speeding through the roads outside of the city, and the sudden loud stop and that’s when their memory stops. Little did Ryder know that their brother had been drinking and little did they know that only one person was going to make it out. Ryder has a million and one conflicting feelings about what happened (which also inspired his stage name) but still to this day they’ll never be a passenger in any car. END OF TWS.

As he got older he wanted to separate himself from the Sydney name so he adopted a stage name “The Ghost” and that’s what he fought with for his entire bare-knuckle boxing career from street fighting all the way to bare-knuckle boxing championships. He was good at it too. Earning him several titles. But it all came at a heavy price. Through the years Ryder suffered multiple injuries, from broken bones to repeated concussions that forced them to reluctantly retire. Always being one to try and hide their injuries it was a challenge to have to face them and come to terms that their body couldn’t withstand the gruelling training and matches no more. 

Came out as non-binary and pansexual after he retired.

Ryder’s still trying to find his place now he’s not competing. 

PERSONALITY:

While coming across as quiet and grumpy, most people will be lucky to get a sentence out of him, Ryder’s not aggressive unless prompted which is in stark contrast to how he looks and his history in boxing. While he prefers to spend time by himself but that doesn’t negate the fact that those close to them get his light-hearted and mischievous side.

Is known to skateboard down a road in the pitch black of night for the adrenaline rush. 

Due to their upbringing, they’ve always had an insatiable hunger to be better than they were yesterday. It has driven them to perform bigger stunt stunts and take up bigger fights than the last. Even as a child Ryder would think they could make impossible jumps on their skateboard, and while some of them he made, more often than not he’d end up with scrapes and having to push themselves home on a skateboard with a broken ankle. This is still evident in how even today if Ryder doesn’t feel as though they’re progressing regularly they’d feel disgustingly stagnant and restless and will do anything to feel as though they’re not.

Personality:

Sada Vang could be called a sociopath. She cares little for other people, gives little thought to their thoughts or feelings outside of how it impacts her or how she can use it to her advantage. She can be charming and disarming when it suits her, but she also has no qualms in stabbing someone in the back and stepping on their corpse with her designer boots to get what she wants. She has no qualms with hurting others if it serves her in some way, and is not at all squeamish when it comes to 'getting people out of her way'.

Biography:

Born to a drug addicted mother in New York, Sada was abandoned from the moment she was birthed as her mother left the hospital without warning a day after, never to be seen again. Born addicted to the same drugs as her mother and with a name given by one of the nurses who'd delivered her and a government employee, Sada Vang entered life straight into the system. From the get go it was noted by her foster families that even as an infant she rarely cried, and by the time she was a toddler they were noting her lack of affection, disregard for other's feelings, and a tendency to hurt the other children in the homes.

By the time she was ten she'd been in twice as many homes as years to her name, and by sixteen she'd walked away from the system altogether. Spending a year on the street, she eventually managed to procure a fake ID and a job in one of the more prestigious gentleman's clubs in the city. With her boundless confidence and easy handle on her sexuality and sex appeal, Sada rose quickly in ranks among the dancers, earning top dollar on the side through trysts, affairs, and a hint of blackmail with the city's affluent men. By her eighteenth birthday money was no longer problem, but as a gift, the owner of the club brought her in on his 'back door' enterprise.

Thriving as much in handling the back of forth of drugs through the club as she did dancing in it, her reputation became an open secret among the city's wealthiest. On her twenty-first birthday she semi-retired from dancing, instead managing the club and it's less legal operations with the occasional performance for shits and giggles and special occasions. For her thirtieth birthday, the club's owner decided to retire himself, being bought out by his now partner, Sada. Twenty years later and Eden's Garden remains by far the top Gentleman's club for the 1%, and a hefty percentage of the drugs coming into the city passed through her. Ridiculously wealthy in her own right, no one could ever say that Sada Vang wasn't a success story.

The day of the outbreak, the club was empty preparing for Sada's massive 50th birthday blow out, and she'd been in making sure everything was exactly the way she wanted it. For a long time she wasn't even aware anything was going on until her former employer called to tell her to get home. By that time it was too late and just opening the door had brought an attack down on her, one laid to rest with the heel of a well placed stiletto through the temple of a snarling finance bro. Locking herself inside, that's where she stayed with enough food, alcohol, and drugs to keep her occupied until the power finally cut. Seemed it was time to finally start the trek back to The Wexley and the comfort of her waiting loft with a duffle bag of 'supplies'.

'Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan's sweeping new biographical thriller about the "father of the atomic bomb", has opened to a glowing reception around the world. In India, it's been a hit too but some have protested against a scene depicting the scientist reading the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism's holiest books, after sex. Oppenheimer learnt the ancient Sanskrit language and counted the book as one of his favourites.

In July 1945, two days before the explosion of the first atomic bomb in the New Mexico desert, Robert Oppenheimer recited a stanza from the Bhagavad Gita, or The Lord's Song.

Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist, had been introduced to Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language, and subsequently the Gita, as a teacher in Berkeley years before. More than 2,000-year-old, Bhagavad Gita is part of the Mahabharata - one of Hinduism's greatest epics - and at 700 verses, the world's longest poem.

Now, hours before an event that would change history, the "father of the atomic bomb" relieved his tension by reciting a stanza he had translated from Sanskrit:

In battle, in forest, at the precipice of the mountains

On the dark great sea, in the midst of javelins and arrows,

In sleep, in confusion, in the depths of shame,

The good deeds a man has done before defend him

As Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin write in their authoritative 2005 biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer, a young Oppenheimer was introduced to Sanskrit by Arthur W Ryder, a professor of Sanskrit at the University of California, Berkeley. The precocious physicist had arrived there as a 25-year-old assistant professor. Over the next few decades, he helped build one of the "greatest schools of theoretical physics" in the US.

Ryder, a Republican and a "sharp tongued iconoclast", was fascinated by Oppenheimer. For his part, Oppenheimer regarded Ryder as a "quintessential intellectual", a scholar who "felt and thought and talked as a stoic". The young scientist's textile importer father agreed, saying Ryder was a "remarkable combination of austereness through which peeps the gentlest soul".

Oppenheimer - played by actor Cillian Murphy in the biopic - also regarded Ryder as a rare person who had "a tragic sense of life, in that they attribute to human actions the completely decisive role in the difference between salvation and damnation".

Soon, Ryder was giving Oppenheimer private lessons in Sanskrit on Thursday evenings. "I am learning Sanskrit," the scientist wrote to his brother Frank, "enjoying it very much and enjoying again the sweet luxury of being taught".

Many of his friends found his new obsession with an Indian language odd, Oppenheimer's biographers noted. One of them, Harold F Cherniss, who introduced the scientist to the scholar, thought it made "perfect sense" because Oppenheimer had a "taste of the mystical and the cryptic".

So Oppenheimer's knowledge of Sanskrit and the Gita is clearly germane to telling his story. But some right wing Hindus have complained - particularly about the sex scene with lover Jean Tatlock, played by Florence Pugh - saying the film is an attack on their religion and demanding cuts.

But India's film censors found no problem with it and at the box office it's the Hollywood hit of the year in India, faring better than Barbie since the two blockbusters opened on Friday.

There's no doubt Oppenheimer was a widely well-read man - he took courses in philosophy, French literature, English, history, and briefly considered studying architecture, and even becoming a classicist, poet or painter. He wrote poems on "themes of sadness and loneliness", and identified with TS Eliot's "sparse existentialism" in The Waste Land.

"He liked things that were difficult. And since almost everything was easy for him, the things that really would attract his attention were essentially the difficult," Cherniss said.

With his facility for languages - Oppenheimer had studied Greek, Latin, French and German and learned Dutch in six weeks - it "wasn't really long before" he was reading the Bhagavad Gita. He found it "very easy and quite marvellous" and told friends that it was the "most beautiful philosophical song existing in any known tongue". In his bookshelf was a pink-covered copy of the book that Ryder had gifted him; and Oppenheimer himself gifted copies to his friends.

The biographers write that the scientist was so "enraptured by his Sanskrit studies" that in 1933 when his father brought him a Chrysler, he named it Garuda, after the giant bird God in Hindu mythology.

In spring of that year, Oppenheimer had written a rather florid letter to his brother explaining why discipline and work had always been his guiding principles. It pointed to the fact that he was enthralled by eastern philosophy.

He wrote: "through discipline, though not through discipline alone, we can achieve serenity, and a certain small but precious measure of freedom from the accidents of incarnation… and that detachment which preserves the world it renounces". Only through discipline, he added, is it possible to "see the world without the gross distraction of personal desire, and in seeing so, accept more easily our earthly privation and its earthly horror".

"In the late twenties, Oppenheimer seemed to be searching for an earthly detachment; he wished, in other words to be engaged as a scientist with the physical world, and yet detached from it," his biographers write.

"He was not seeking to escape to a purely spiritual realm. He was not seeking religion. What he sought was peace of mind. The Gita seemed to provide precisely the right philosophy for an intellectual keenly attuned to the affairs of men and the pleasures of the senses."

One of his favourite Sanskrit texts was the Meghaduta, a lyric poem written by Kalidasa, one of the greatest poets in the language. "The Meghaduta I read with Ryder, with delight, some ease and great enchantment," he wrote to his brother, Frank.

Why did Oppenheimer turn to Gita and its notions of karma, destiny and earthly duty so fervently? His biographers hazard a guess: "Perhaps the attraction Robert felt to the fatalism of the Gita was at least stimulated by a late blooming rebellion against what he had been taught as a youth", alluding to his early association with the Ethical Culture Society, an "uniquely American offshoot of Judaism that celebrated rationalism and a progressive brand of secular humanism".

To be sure, Oppenheimer was not alone in admiring the Hindu text. Henry David Thoreau wrote about immersing himself in the "stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial". Heinrich Himmler was an admirer. Mahatma Gandhi was an ardent follower. And WB Yeats and TS Eliot, two poets Oppenheimer admired, had read the Mahabharata.

The sight of the giant orange mushroom cloud rising in the skies after the first atomic bomb test had led Oppenheimer to return to the Gita again. The bombs that were eventually dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II had killed tens of thousands of people.

"We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent," he told NBC in a 1965 documentary.

"I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita; Vishnu [a principal Hindu deity] is trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty, and to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, "Now I have become death, the destroyer of the worlds'. I suppose we all thought that, one way or another."

A friend of the scientist said the quote sounded like one of Oppenheimer's "priestly exaggerations".

Yet, the enigmatic scientist remained profoundly influenced by it.

When the editors of The Christian Century asked the scientist once to share the books that most profoundly influenced his philosophical outlook, Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal held the top spot. And the Bhagavad Gita took the second position.'
