Really quick headcanon but I feel like Thomas/Sprout is really gifted in being able to read people or pick up on their emotions, especially for a young child. I think he knows exactly when Abe's stressed or anxious, even if he's trying to keep up a brave face. There have been a ton of moments in Abe's spy career where Thomas would run up to Abe because he can just tell his father isn't doing well.

In the whole scene of Ben apologizing for killing Wakefield, I noticed that Abe is all like "You did what you needed to do" and the contrast to Richard being all pissed at Ben because murder wasn't part of the deal at all. This is a very surface level take, but it just shows how much Abe has changed and hardened throughout the seasons because we all know s1 Abe would be screaming and yelling at Ben for killing someone.

I haven't watched turn in a bit, so I might change this headcanon later down the line, but as we know Abe is a very stubborn individual and has a bit of a fighting spirit. I think for almost any circumstance, Abe's default/initial action is to resist. He wants to do things his way, because most of Abe's life are things that didn't go his way.

Even though Abe resisted being part of the spy ring, even if his views aligned more patriot than loyalist, I think Abe probably had the most control he had ever had in his life when he became a spy. (Likely was pushed to go to school by his family expectations, not being able to date Anna in public due to family expectations and politics, marrying his brother's intended, Rogers and Simcoe's involvement in his life). Yes, he was influenced by his friends, it was initiated in the pilot when his boat was robbed, and just how everything else laid out in his situation (debt, the war, etc). But I think Abe had the most control he has ever had with choosing to become a spy. He could've denied it, and even being as a spy, he could go his own way, his own schedule, and act on his own goals, but he stuck with it. I think maybe that's partly why he's so stubborn, besides a bunch of other reasons, when it comes to his plans and his role in the spy ring.

( ooc ): This just stupidly came to my mind, but based off the last gifset of Abe taking Thomas' inheritance (I'm assuming Whitehall and Richard help funded the farm), I wonder if knowing that it would go to Thomas messed with Abe a little growing up and it messed with Richard now that Thomas was dead. His intended son, his heir. Now having to give his home and all this money to Abe, who was never going to get all of it in the first place doesn't help Richard's annoyance with Abe and how Abe kept lying, being suspicious, and doing his own thing without listening to his father.

So I'm about to go to bed and I'm on my unhinged timeTM. So I saw this edit on t.iktok right. It's a really good edit imo, but then I got to thinking. There is a slight parallel to the showdown between Simcoe and Abe in s4 to the duel we see in s1. Abe choose his friends/family/the cause (essentially, this all leads back to his son in a way since y'know that's why he choose to spy) in both instances and how Abe was the one with the advantage in the final moments in both circumstances where he could've killed Simcoe right then and there. S4, he might not be able to get away with it as easily as he would on s1 with the duel, but I'm just losing my mind over this show rn. Even if this wasn't even intentional with the writers.

Not entirely centered on Abe, but still sorta relevant. From my chaotic moment with that crack au with Cassie and having Hewlett and Richard as a father figure in her life, this headcanon post isn't connected to that chaos at all. I was thinking a bit about Richard and I think I have a bit of a headcanon for him and the Woodhull family dynamic lmao.

I can't remember if Abe's mother's death was ever explained (like the cause of it), but I have a weird headcanon that while she was happy with the idea of having sons, she always really, really wanted a daughter. Richard likes the idea of having sons, but I think if Abe ever had a sister (especially before the mother's death), Richard would spoil her more than his other sons lmao. Mostly because of the fact Abe's mother always really wanted a daughter, so that's where a majority of his affection would come from. He would probably be the type of parent who thinks their child can do no wrong when it came to Abe's sister. In an argument between Abe and his sister, he would always take his daughter's side. This would probably get Abe to hate his sister because of the way Richard favors her.

WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE SMELL LIKE?

It depends on what time of the year it is, but oddly fresh laundry? Most of the time. When it's harvesting season, you can really smell the dirt and sweat off of Abe. He tends to bathe more during this time because of that reason, and it's also Abe's way of resting his joints after some hard labor. Other than that, I think Abe smells pretty clean. There's no large, recognizable odor coming from him.

WHAT DO YOUR MUSE’S HANDS FEEL LIKE?

With Abe's privileged lifestyle growing up, Abe always had soft hands (especially when its compared to Caleb's). With his farming lifestyle now, his hands have grown rougher but its nowhere near what most manual laborers deal with for their hands. There's calluses here and there, but when comapred to others, his hands are still pretty soft.

WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE USUALLY EAT IN A DAY?  

Abe usually eats hearty meals since I'm sure Whitehall had plenty of large meals growing up, but with his spying schedule and a busy lifestyle in t.urn's timeline, Abe tends to eat smaller meals throughout the day. His biggest meal is probably dinner and his lightest meal is during breakfast. In the city, Abe doesn't eat as much as when he's at home. Abe always feels like he's on the go and tries to get out the door as quickly as he can, always preoccupied with something else. (Except maybe around nighttime, when he wants to spend what time he has with Thomas).

DOES YOUR MUSE HAVE A GOOD SINGING VOICE?

It's alright. It's nothing to write home about, but it's passable.

DOES YOUR MUSE HAVE ANY BAD HABITS OR NERVOUS TICKS?

When dealing with his trauma, Abe often resorts to alcohol and his s.ex addiction which manifests in many forms throughout the timeline of the show. When he's angry, Abe often hits things to release his anger. Abe is very short tempered and can interrupt someone to get his point across. In general, when he's nervous, he adjusts his beanie, runs his hand over hsi hair, paces, or has his hands on his hips.

WHAT DOES YOUR MUSE USUALLY LOOK LIKE / WEAR?

Basically what he wears in the show lmao. Abe dresses nicely, but I think Abe intentionally dresses more "normal" with his spying career. He tries to look as normal and every day as possible to not draw as much attention to himself. he dresses a little nicer in the city but still tries to look discreet to get lost in the crowd of others.

IS YOUR MUSE AFFECTIONATE? HOW SO?  

Not really? I don't think Richard was very affectionate so that also applies to Abe. With his friends, he will hug them, but he's more accutomed to play-fighting. With Thomas, he's very affectionate because he's his pride and joy. In a romantic relationship, I think he's affectionate, and I think he gets more affectionate with Anna in turn because he can't be around her so often, but he tends to prefer for his partner to be more affectionate than he is.

WHAT POSITION DOES YOUR MUSE SLEEP IN?  

Abe can sleep sitting up, but he tends to lay on his back more often than not since he's used to sleeping when there's danger around. He sometimes sleeps on his side, his hand concealed under a pillow to quickly grab a knife (or something nearby). Generally, he rotates through a few different sleeping positions.

COULD YOU HEAR YOUR MUSE IN THE HALLWAY FROM ANOTHER ROOM?

Yes? Not that he's obnoxious, but it depends on what he's doing. You can hear Abe pacing sometimes, with heavy steps, if he's somewhere comfortable, but its not overbearing. Abe does know how to be quiet and if he's been on a spy mission for a long time, he tends to walk much quieter than usual. On instinct, if he's in a new place, Abe will walk silently and try to make as little noise as possible. If he's mad, you can really hear him hitting things, throwing items, and slamming doors or cabinets. At home, he whistles and hums to himself when he's in a good mood. If he's anxious or stressed, Abe tends to walk quicker than usual, which can give him away on most occasions.

Doing a dash meme thing rn, but I got to thinking:

Abe acquires many scars in his time on turn (physical and mental), but when it comes to his treatment of these scars: its similar. Abe both ignores his physical and mental scarring from the events he experiences. He buries down any shame or grief until its coaxed out by alcohol or the right company (his childhood friends could easily get him to talk about this stuff, but it does depend on who. He's more willing to talk about this stuff to Anna than to someone like Caleb just with their dynamic as a whole).

Scars that never go away and persist throughout the entire turn timeline: the cut he gave himself in the pilot to try to sell the story of being beaten up by privateers (scar on his forehead), the stab he receives in s2 in the alleyway will always be there around his stomach area.

Scars that go away over time: the scars on his wrists when he was tied up by that Patriot bandit in s2 and from the handcuffs in the Sugar House. The scar on his neck after his hanging.

All of these scars are covered as much as he can with clothing. The scar on his forehead is harder to conceal because of its location, but it's slightly hidden by his beanie. The scar on his throat and wrists were covered by his sleeve and cravat. He really tried to hide the scar on his neck until it went away because even though Abe felt numb as a trauma response after his near death, he hated looking at them by remembering the look on his father and Mary's face during it. He has a feeling of guilt attached to it that he would even cover it at night to avoid noticing it until it went away. (If you look closely, you can see a small thin scar that remains, but it becomes unnoticeable by s4 timeline).

usually, you're able to bottle up your emotions and ignore the frustrations. but, after weeks of shoving everything down, your body needs a release, and i pity the poor person who managed to piss you off. it's screaming crying, shouting, kicking lockers, whatever you can do to get it out of your system. it's a whole jean grey moment, fire and fury blasting out of you.

Another contribution to the compliment Abe pile. Even though Abe did some shit to Townsend (like having Caleb burn down his barn and punch Samuel Townsend) to get him to join the Culper Ring, I will say that with all the shit he gave him Abe was good about keeping his word that nobody will know he was involved. (Not a good representation, but Abe doesn't tell Hewlett about anything regarding Townsend. He just replies with, "Well, you'll just have to remain curious then" to Hewlett).

In general, Abe is not my favorite (despite dedicating my time to exploring his character lmao), I do want to say that I find Abe interesting in a specific way. We can praise Abe for his loyalty to the ring, but obviously not when it comes to his own marriage. We can say Abe keeps his word, but then Abe is reckless and pursuits his own interests at the end of the day. We can say Abe has a good motivation for doing this for Thomas, but we can also point to multiple crappy things Abe has done in his spying. I think it's kind of interesting how multi-faceted Abe can be. He's not my favorite and I had some issues with his writing, but I think this is a really interesting part of Abe's character.
