held together, our hands became a map
Pairing: Jason Todd x Stephanie Brown
Rating: M | WC: 12.1k + notes | Masterlist | Ao3 | CW: sexual harrassment, light violence, kind-of forced marriage (both want to marry the other but they don't think the other wants to), sexual content
A/N: Finally watched Bridgerton and was immediately inspired. Of course. You’re welcome. Thanks to Bold for letting me rant in her DMs and listening to me ramble about this fic<3 I wrote this in about three days and I’m really proud of myself so I hope y’all like it as much as I do :D Thanks to Boldly and HouseOfKings for betaing<3
Greetings, fair reader. I am the foremost reporter of Gotham society’s deepest and darkest secrets, the enigma that provides the ton with all the scandal they need to continue their gossipy lives. Let me tell you about two subjects of mine that I am finding most difficult to uncover a smear on their names. Miss Stephanie Brown is being sponsored by Duchess Grayson for a season in Gotham's finest society. She's looking for a man who is decent and decently wealthy (she has parents to take care of, after all; she's not choosing to trade love for money just because she's poor). The Duke of Altheban is new to town and most certainly isn't looking for a bride, but something is drawing him to one young lady against his will. Everyone has dark truths, and none more so than those who live in the glitz of high society. I will reveal their most hidden mysteries by the end of the season, or my name is not, Lady Gotham
-The title is a line from Love Maze by BTS. It’s kind of the theme song for this fic and is really catchy, if you want a new bop to listen to. English lyrics here. -There’s probably going to be some historical inaccuracies in here. Sorry not sorry. -I definitely played around with canon a lot, but canon can’t keep their story straight so at least I’m doing better than them, even if by doing so I mess up their canon :p -This is set in 1810. -It’s not a no-capes AU but it’s also not a Gotham by Gaslight AU (besides being set 80 years earlier). There’s some Bat-shenaniganery going on that’s not recorded in the fic but they haven’t revealed themselves to me yet. Just assume watered-down GbG AU, I suppose. Primitive crime-fighting stuff, some smarts being involved, and the basic tragic Bat-story & subsequent adoptions etc. -Jason died. I don’t know how. Or when. Or why. It just happened. Maybe I’ll figure it out in another work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -There was/is no TimSteph. They’re friends at best. -I meant for Cass and Duke to be in here (which sparked a whole breakdown trying to figure out what to call someone literally named Duke) but somehow they never popped in, besides one line where ‘Thomas’ [surname] is mentioned. The rest of the Bats aren’t really there, either, minus the minor Dick/Babs appearances. This is not a Batfam fic, this is a JaySteph fic. -I really like Babs’s character, and I dislike the ping-ponging in canon between making her disabled or not, so I kept her as her current(?) self, Oracle. No I don’t know how it happened or how she survived with the medicine of the day. This is fiction, shhh. Side note: Wheelchairs from the 1800’s looked more comfortable than I was expecting. -Don’t bother figuring out ages. Jason and Steph are in their early/mid-twenties and the rest of it is *waves hand* -I looked up Regency wedding traditions and wrote as accurately as I could. -More notes about the fic & my research at the end. (Side note: This was 12,000 words exactly in my docs, where did the extra 46 come from?! I was proud of that round wc ;-;)
Dearest Reader,
As you may know, the belle of the season is Miss Adelia Elliot, who broke onto the scene with a high compliment from the queen of Gotham herself, Selina Wayne. But let us not be so hasty to secure Miss Elliot as the season’s incomparable, for there has emerged another young lady from the ranks of the season’s debutantes.
Miss Stephanie Brown, a previously unheard-of young lady, has caught the eye of the most eligible Lord Duma. Will this debutante with unforeseen connections consider Lord Duma her match, or will she set her sights higher, with the backing of the inestimable judge of character, Duchess Grayson of Bludhaven?
Only time will tell. Let us speculate on the matches that may be made, for there appears to be blossoming a most fruitful season. However, let us not be swept away by the opening chords. There is still room for even the most nimble of societal maestros to slip.
We hope to be spared any slips by the illustrious Lord Damian Wayne at tonight’s soiree at Wayne Manor, the event that I am sure we all can acknowledge will kick off the season with refined festivity.
The youngest son of our very own darling Prince of Gotham, Bruce Wayne, Lord Wayne has been studying music at the Geneva Academy of Music for the past several months.
I look forward to seeing you all at his event, utilizing your finest feathers and weaponized words to glamour yourselves in an attempt to snag one of the elusive, prized sons of the finest founding family of this city.
Your closest friend,
Lady Gotham
Stephanie tossed the pamphlet onto the desk in annoyance.
“Is that the newest Lady Gotham newsletter?” asked Babs from the corner, where she was reorganizing her bookshelves after acquiring several more volumes.
“Yes.” She flopped onto the sofa, swinging her legs over the armrest. “Speculating on Adelia Elliot and my presentations and guessing who is going to marry who–the usual gossip,” she waved a hand in Babs’s direction. “She did end on a rather tongue-in-cheek note, though. Perhaps the lady is not as satisfied with society as I first thought.”
“Time will tell,” said Babs, unknowingly echoing the words of whom she was speaking.
Reversing the direction of her wheelchair, she steered over to the desk Steph had left the paper on. She looked over the pamphlet briefly before returning her attention to her friend.
“This reminds me, which dress are you planning on wearing to Damian’s recital tonight?”
“The green one, I was thinking.”
Babs sighed as she caught sight of Lady Gotham’s penultimate line. “Imagine you marrying one of Bruce’s sons.”
Steph snorted indelicately. “Damian is too young, even if he does have something of an eye for me, you’ve married Grayson, and Drake and I would never work out.” She shivered at the thought.
“I suppose I’d get along decently with Thomas, but he’s also rather young. I really don’t know what the writer was implying with her thinly veiled speculations. And she says we use our weaponized words!”
“Just ignore the gossips like you always do, Steph,” advised Babs. “And sit properly, please.”
“Because it’s that easy,” she rolled her eyes, moving to a more acceptable pose. “I admit I find myself quite intrigued as to this evening’s happenings. If Lady Gotham is among us, will she attempt to stir up the theatrics among the ton?”
~~~
A grunt escaped Jason as he turned, letting the punch roll off him. It still hurt, despite knowing how to take hits. His opponent danced back, bringing his fists back up into a guard position.
Jason moved back, luring his opponent over, before releasing a series of quick jabs and punches that forced his opponent to concede defeat.
“Alright, I get it, you’re stressed about your debut. What’s the matter, worried that you might not have any ladies dropping their handkerchiefs around you?”
Jason snorted, climbing out of the ring to get his towel. “You know I’m not looking for a lady yet.”
Waylon raised a disbelieving eyebrow at him. “You’re going to need a lady sooner or later.”
“Well, I choose later.” Jason yanked his cravat into a passable knot. “I’m worried that the family that’s practically Gotham’s royalty is going to dig into this mysterious new Duke of Altheban and destroy my plans before I’ve even had a chance to start.” He straightened his jacket and tapped his pockets to make sure everything was still there.
“I’ll see you later, Jones.”
“Enjoy the party, Todd–I mean Head.”
Jason waved his hand, not looking, as he headed out of the boxing centre.
~~~
In the velvet darkness of Gotham past 7 p.m, Wayne Manor presented a glittering vision as its lights reflected off the multitudinous baubles out on display for the soiree. Gilded and not-so-gilded carriages flowed from the portico to the stables in orderly succession.
Nimble fingers tripped lightheartedly over pianoforte keys as the star of the night, the newly-returned Damian Wayne, displayed his polished skills in a rousing performance.
“Ah, Head, there you are, my fine fellow!”
Jason nodded politely as an enthusiastic Roy Harper dragged him over to the group of young men congregated close to the doors of the formal parlor. “Gentlemen, this is my good friend Head, the Duke of Altheban. Head, these are my friends. This rogue is Aleksander, Lord Duma, and here is…”
Jason tipped his head shortly. “Pleasure to make your acquaintance, gentlemen.”
Babs stopped her wheelchair abruptly, causing Steph to bang her knee on the back. “Ow, Babs-”
“Look, Steph, I am perfectly capable of getting myself to the parlour without your assistance. I will be fine for the entire evening, in fact! You should not worry about me and instead fill your dance card–with names that are not a part of the hosting family’s roster.”
Steph sniffed. “Fine, I will dance with one person who is not a Wayne or Wayne-adjacent. One .”
Babs sighed. “Thank you. If you see Dick before I do, could you direct him my way? Thank you.”
“Alright. Have fun, Babs.”
“I will,” Babs smirked, wheeling herself into the festivities and parking her chair in the best spot to get all the gossip.
Steph looked longingly at the refreshments table, then headed resolutely in the other direction, promptly bumping into a masculine chest. Her handkerchief fluttered to her feet, jarred loose from where it had been tucked into her glove by the impact.
“Oh, my apologies, I did not see you there, My Lord.”
He nodded stiffly, bending to collect her handkerchief. He rose and handed it to her, making sure their fingers did not brush. “It’s quite alright, it’s getting rather crowded in here. My fault, I’m sure.”
“No, no, that was my fault. I was caught in the sorrow of leaving those delicious-looking tarts behind me and did not see you for the tears in my eyes. Hence, the handkerchief,” she dabbed at her eyes dramatically.
The man’s stiff posture relaxed a little at her good-natured theatrics, his lips quirking up in what some may describe as a small smile. (Steph personally described it as the look of a hunted man relieved to find she was not his hunter–or huntress, as the case may be.) “May I escort you to those delicious-looking tarts, then? I hate to see a lady cry, especially when it can be easily remedied.”
“Thank you, that would be delightful. It’s not rude to eat a dozen of the things if a gentleman brought me one a dozen times, correct, My Lord?”
“Indeed, it would be far more rude to refuse his devoted attentions.”
“Lovely,” chirped Steph, taking his arm. “I do think it would be awful if Lady Gotham reported me rude in her next issue. I must take care to avoid all pretenses of the word.”
The man–whose name Steph still didn’t know, and also had never seen before, and did not know who could properly introduce them–poured two crystal cups of punch. “Would you care for some, my lady?”
“Thank you. The tarts are delicious but they do leave one thirsty.”
“Ah, Miss Brown.”
Steph turned to see Lord Duma approaching her, a polite but fixed smile on his face.
“Lord Duma,” she half-curtsied. “How are you this evening?”
“I am doing well, Miss Brown. I see you have met the ton’s latest import. Duke Altheban,” he nodded his head.
Steph cursed inwardly at her earlier social faux pas. To be fair, the only other dukes at this event she was already acquainted with, and she certainly didn’t expect this man to have a title that required a different address than ‘my lord’.
The man nodded back. “Lord Duma.”
“Ah, His Grace was just procuring me some punch, like a gentleman, before I fainted of thirst. We haven’t even been formally introduced.”
Hopefully the Duke would forgive her slip and have mercy on her unnoble self, now that he knew she was unaware of his status. To be fair, he had not seemed the type to be overly cognizant of his title–much like the Waynes, she supposed. A refreshing attitude, indeed.
Lord Duma took her hint.
“Oh, I must introduce you, then. Miss Brown, this is Jason Head, the Duke of Altheban; Your Grace, Miss Stephanie Brown.”
“It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Brown.” Duke Altheban bowed over her hand. “So, Lord Duma, are you tired of Harper’s stories so soon?”
He laughed. “Once you’ve been here a season or two, you’ll have heard all of Harper's stories. Besides, I heard that the young Wayne is finishing his performance soon and that the musicians would soon start the dancing. I had to make sure I reserved a spot on Miss Brown’s dance card.”
Steph smiled politely back at him. “Thank you, Lord Duma. Your forethought has indeed awarded you a chance to put your name on my dance card.”
“I would like to also reserve a spot, if I may, Miss Brown.”
Steph turned to the Duke, somewhat surprised. It wasn’t uncommon for lords to take interest in courting untitled young ladies, but dukes were considerably higher ranked than lords and rarely courted or married outside of their titles.
How interesting. She’d enjoy getting to know more about him as long as he let her.
“As you wish, Your Grace.”
~~~
Lord Duma was a fine dancer, and Steph enjoyed their turn around the room, but dancing with Duke Head was something else entirely. They fit together perfectly, in such synchronization that they seemed to be floating over the dancefloor.
“You are a wonderful dancer, Your Grace.”
“A dancer is only as good as their partner, I’ve been told.”
Steph smiled, mentally recording the feel of his large hands over hers, the faint smoky scent of his cologne, the soft swish of air as it flowed over her exposed skin. Dancing had always been a passion of hers, but it was difficult to find partners with whom she connected so well.
“What you were saying earlier, about a Lady Gotham,” said the Duke. “I did not know there was such a title here.”
Steph answered his unasked question. “Lady Gotham is a pseudonym for some author who has recently begun to write about society’s banalities and scandals. The ton is quite invested in both the papers she prints and the mask she wears. No one knows who it is, and so far it is one of the season’s biggest topics of conversation.”
“Ah. Thank you for explaining, Miss Brown.”
“It is quite alright with me if you address me as Miss Stephanie or Miss Steph, Your Grace.”
“As you wish, Miss Stephanie. You seem rather…how shall I put this…distant from society. Aside from Lord Duma and myself, you have not danced or talked with any acquaintances.”
Steph laughed. “I am not well acquainted with most of the ton, Your Grace. I am a miss, not a lady, and I am not in the habit of associating with double-faced, backstabbing socialites. I prefer intelligent conversation, even if I am here to find a husband, but it truly seems like the two are mutually exclusive.”
He barked a short laugh, pulling her infinitesimally closer. “It does seem that you are either doomed to marry or become a book-loving spinster, does it not? As if you cannot marry and love books, or be unmarried and detest the things.”
“Indeed. My sponsor for the season is happily married, and she has one of the largest libraries I have seen.”
She twirled, coming back to the duke’s arms.
“I suppose I am simply setting my sights too high. She had a better beginning than I, and she already was acquainted with her husband; their families have always been friendly. And that is not in the cards for me. If I must marry for my family’s sake, then I will have to set aside dreams of love and books and loving books. Such is the way of life,” she mused sadly.
Duke Altheban twirled her again. “Surely someone here also loves books, at least? They are lords and barons, they have to have studied. Speaking purely hypothetically, what about the Duke of Bristol?”
“Tim?” Steph laughed. “No, it would never work between us, for many reasons.”
“Oh, you’ve met?”
“A time or two,” she grinned. The last strains of the music faded away, and the sudden rush of chatter from the dancers surrounding them made talking difficult.
“Time for another tart, perhaps, Miss Stephanie?” asked the duke, leading her over to the quieter refreshment table.
“If you offer it to me, I’d hate to refuse, Your Grace-ooh, waffles!”
“I take it you like the pastries?”
“Very much. The chef here always makes the best cream to eat with them.” Steph groaned as the treat hit her taste buds.
The duke followed her lead of spooning the cream onto the waffle bite and eating it. “That is quite good. Oh, hello, Harper.”
“Stephanie,” nodded Roy, turning back to the duke. “You really must come with me now, Jason. You’re finally here and we can fulfill all those adventures we spoke about on our European trip!”
“Very well. Miss Stephanie.” He kissed her fingers in farewell.
Her fingers tingled from the press of his lips the rest of the night.
“That was fast,” laughed Waylon the next week after Jason ended their spar.
Jason glared at him from under the fringe of his hair. “You can shove whatever else you want to say right up your-”
“Did you see what Lady Gotham wrote about you?” interrupted his friend/investee.
“No, what?” he grumbled, curiosity piqued.
Waylon pulled out the paper and balanced his spectacles on his nose.
Clearing his throat, he read eloquently, “‘ There is nothing the ton likes more than talking about themselves, unless it is talking about others.
‘The most common question heard at the Waynes’ soiree was ‘Who is the Duke of Altheban’? He was certainly well-acquainted with several of the lords of this fair city, but no one–except myself–knows more than these three facts: firstly, the duke has spent the last several years traveling the continent and making connections for his merchant business.
‘Secondly, he originally hails from the land of Nanda Parbat, where his dukedom is located.
‘Thirdly, he is a most desirable catch, being young, rich, and single, of which only one of these attributes society truly considers necessary. He is also reportedly an excellent dancer, although sparing with his partners.
‘But, fourthly, the duke is looking for something in particular from this season and this society. Could it be a wife? A new business partner? Whatever it is, this author is sure that we all are eager to learn more’ .”
Jason dropped his head into his hands in frustration. He’d forgotten just how vicious society’s gossip was. Whichever event he next attended, he was surely going to be flocked even more than he’d been at the soiree.
And he was back to his problem. Miss Stephanie Brown. A poor young socialite who was looking for a husband, all details which should have made him flee instead of being drawn to her. Yet she had been a breath of fresh air. Even after she learned of his status, she did not change her behaviour, and had given him the most pleasant conversation with a woman who was not married or related to him he’d had in…ever. She’d openly admitted she was looking for a moneyed husband, which he could not blame her for, and clearly cared for her family, considering what she was willing to give up for them.
She clearly had more dimensions to her than most of the other young ladies had dresses, and he desperately wanted to explore more of them.
“-son!”
“Hm?”
“Wow, you have it bad.” Waylon shook his head in mock sympathy. “What’s the lady’s name?”
“Ste-what young lady?”
Waylon looked at him, unimpressed. “The one you’re thinking about and can’t stop thinking about. I’d like to meet this woman who’s managed to make you reconsider your stance on marriage this fast.”
“I’m not reconsi-” Jason paused, realisation washing over him, and swore violently.
Waylon patted him on the shoulder and laughed, the traitor.
“I’m not marrying her!” he yelled after the boxer.
He laughed louder.
~~~
Steph knew that she was being impractical, but didn’t particularly care. She’d have to live with her practicability soon enough, she was going to take this moment while she could to daydream.
The babblings of a baby roused her from her thoughts of dancing with Duke Altheban, and she peeked into Emma’s carriage.
“Hello, darling. Have you woken up from your nap, sweetie? I knew the fresh air would be good for you, and look at that! You’ve finally slept longer than an hour!” She cooed to the baby, turning the carriage to head home. “Yes, I imagine you’ll be hungry rather soon, I’ll get you back, never fear.”
The afternoon stroll in the sunlight had done both Emma and Steph good, the fresh air giving them both an appetite. Once Steph had gotten Emma fed and back in her crib, she started making the evening meal, feeling the beginning pangs of hunger in her stomach as well.
The door opened just as she’d finished setting the table and she greeted the arrival with a small smile. “Good evening. Emma’s been walked and fed and is now asleep, and supper is ready. Wash up and I’ll have it on the table.”
“Thanks, Steph.”
~~~
Jason looked around the Crowns’ ballroom for a familiar head of blonde curls but found nothing. So far his sudden appearance on the ton’s scene hadn’t caused any major questions of his identity; even the Waynes were quiet, though he knew better than to dismiss them simply because he didn’t see evidence of their activities.
Dick walked in, Babs wheeling herself beside him, nodding politely to acquaintances as they passed. And there, just behind the couple, was Stephanie Brown.
That would explain Stephanie’s familiarity with the Waynes, if Babs was her sponsor, as Jason gathered from what she had shared. He laughed inwardly at the thought of Tim’s immersive nerdiness and Stephanie’s bubbly interests meshing. No wonder she’d laughed when he’d half-jokingly suggested Tim as a solution to her marriage problem.
Jason tapped the side of his glass thoughtfully as he subconsciously tracked her circle around the room.
She needed a husband, and he was going to find her one. He didn’t want to marry, but he could find her someone. She was only somewhat younger than him, which in society’s eyes was fairly old for a debutante–though not for a man, who was always eligible and never shelved with a derogatory title, Lady Gotham had noted a day or two earlier.
She needed a man older than her, which removed several of the more juvenile options, and one who was respectful of women, which sadly removed even more.
He thought back to what else she had said. Stephanie was looking for money, someone to support her family. He supposed he should figure out just how large her family was first and how much her future husband should expect to pay up, first.
The best way to find out such information was by asking the woman in question, of course. Jason approached the woman in the lavender gown, holding out his hand in silent question. She turned, sensing him, and accepted with a wide smile.
They moved swiftly onto the floor in time with the quartet, settling into a comfortable rhythm.
“How have you been, Your Grace?”
“Well, thank you. How have you been, Miss Stephanie?”
“Oh, rather well. I visited a friend yesterday and had a lovely walk in the sun. It seems rather rare for this city, doesn’t it?”
“Indeed, it’s rather a gloomy place. Do you enjoy nature?”
She moved to another man, then back to him in turn.
“Oh, definitely. Although I must admit, I quite enjoy the comforts of home, meagre as they may be, when there is a blizzard raging outside. My fondness for it does not extend quite so far.”
Jason chuckled. “I can’t blame you for that; I rather agree with you there. Is that your mother?” he nodded towards an older lady with blonde hair curled similar to Stephanie’s.
She smiled slightly. “No, that is Lady Aurora. My mother would never be invited to such an event–I’m only here because the Duchess of Bludhaven is sponsoring me. My mother is a nurse in the Bowery.”
The Bowery. The polite name for the red light district, known for its crime and pleasure houses. A place Jason was intimately familiar with, much against his desire.
“A nurse, how noble of her. It’s hard work, I imagine.” He gently spun her into a twirl.
Stephanie seemed grateful, knowing he knew exactly where the Bowery was but hadn’t let on that he did. “Yes, it is, but she is good at it. I’m proud of her.”
“Do you have any siblings?”
Nothing like asking point-blank–in Jason’s experience, pointed questions yielded the clearest results, since there was nothing to be confused or semantical about.
“No, I’m an only child. My father is… was an entertainer, but he got injured some time ago and is now recovering at home.”
Ah, that was why she needed the marriage. He could read between the lines easily enough. Well, only having parents-in-law to support would be easy enough to sell to a prospective suitor, he supposed. It certainly beat having a dozen siblings to also support.
“I’m sorry to hear that, Miss Stephanie. My father was also injured before he died, and my mother had consumption. It was heartbreaking to see. I wish your father the best.”
“I’m sorry to hear that, Your Grace. I shall pass on your wishes to my father. Thank you.” She curtsied and stepped away, clearly ending the conversation.
Jason wished to speak with her more, but he had the information he had wanted.
Surely there wouldn’t be more than one Brown family in the Bowery comprised of a nurse and entertainer.
~~~
Steph cuddled Emma in her arms, cooing at the baby’s chubby cheeks. “You’re adorable, yes you are. The sweetest baby I ever saw.”
Dancing around the room with the baby, making her giggle with high-pitched laughter, lightened the weight on her mind. Nothing else mattered when she was with Emma.
A man passing by the window had a build and hair similar to Duke Altheban, reminding her of the times they had danced together at the past several events.
“I wish he was courting me, but I know he’s not looking for a bride. And even if he was, it certainly wouldn’t be someone like me,” she told the child pulling at her dress’s neckline. “I mean, look at me,” she laughed.
“But he’s such a gentleman, Emmy. He’s considerate and funny and smart and well-read and respectful and attentive and handsome and such a good dancer–not like Lord Mayburn–and he’s traveled and he speaks seven languages, he told me. Seven, Emma!” She exclaimed to the non-responsive child. “I only know English and passable French, and a few words in Latin and Spanish. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s a duke and a successful merchant. He’s the perfect man, Emma…but not for me. But, if I can even keep him as a friend, that would be worth it.
“Do you think it would be strange if I asked him for his opinion on some of the men I’m thinking of flirting with to get them to court me? I wouldn’t want to make him think I’m hinting at him courting me–I’m sure he’s tired of women throwing themselves at him…literally, like Eugenia Sorren,” she shuddered at the memory.
“But men talk differently around women they’re courting than other men, and maybe the duke would know something that I don’t that could help me with my decision. If I’m going to marry for money and not love, I should at least make sure it’s to a decent man I can be friends with, right? Friendship is the foundation for love, or so Babs says. Yes, I should ask him, but clarify it first so that he knows I’m not suggesting anything,” she decided, nodding her head. “Good chat, Emma. Thank you for your insightful contribution.”
The baby spat up on her dress in response.

Jason pulled at the button on his glove’s wrist as he stood outside the weathered door opening onto the dirt street. He hoped Stephanie wouldn’t be too piqued with him if she discovered he’d done this.
A woman who looked much like an older Stephanie, only with brown hair and green eyes instead of Stephanie’s blonde and blue, answered the door. Her eyes trailed from his freshly-shined boots up to the crisp knot of his cravat, and slowly widened as she took him in.
“May I help you, My Lord?”
“Are you Mrs. Brown, ma’am?”
“Yes, I am.” She eyed him warily now. Rich folks looking for you was never a good sign, he was well aware.
“Is your husband in?”
“Yes.”
“Is now a good time to speak with you, then? I can return later if it’s more convenient, but I’d like to speak with you and your husband.”
“Now is as good a time as any, My Lord,” she replied, ushering him into the house and taking his hat. “May I take your coat and gloves?”
“Thank you.”
She showed him to the dated front room, where a man sat in a cushioned chair, reading the paper.
“Arthur, we have a visitor. I’ll go put on the tea while you talk to…” she looked to him for help.
“Jason Head. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mr Brown, Mrs Brown.”
Mrs Brown nodded at his polite introduction and headed to what he assumed was the kitchen, leaving him alone with her husband.
“So, what brings you to my humble home this afternoon, Mr Head?” asked the man gruffly, setting the paper aside.
“I understand you have a daughter?”
“Yes, Stephanie.”
“I’ve made her acquaintance recently, and her telling me about her family prodded me to pay you a visit.”
“Whatever for?” asked the man, finally gesturing for him to sit down.
Jason hemmed and hawed for a minute, trying to figure out the most tactful way to phrase it. Talia was always telling him to polish his blunt, sometimes borderline impolite, honesty.
“I wanted to meet the folks that would make a lady like that…” he trailed off, suddenly rethinking his whole endeavour. What was he doing? Meeting the parents of the woman he was trying to find a bridegroom for so he wouldn’t be forced to confront his own feelings for her?
Mrs Brown came bustling into the room a moment later, a steaming pot of tea on the tray in her hands, alongside a plate of baked goods.
He jumped up, taking the tray from her and setting it on the table before heading to the hallway to retrieve his things. “I apologize for disrupting your afternoon. I’m sorry, I’ve just started to feel unwell, I must leave. Good day Mr Brown, Mrs Brown.”
Tipping his hat at the confused couple, he practically ran to his horse, swinging onto Jericho’s saddle carelessly.
Kicking Jericho into a trot, he made his escape. From behind him, he thought he heard a confused “Your Grace?” being called after him.
He nudged Jericho even faster, heading to the fields in an attempt to outrun his feelings.

Stephanie ran up the steps to her house, surprised to see her mother in the doorway already.
“Was that the Duke of Altheban I saw riding by just now?” she demanded incredulously.
“Who?”
“Oh, nevermind. Thought I saw someone I knew. How was your day, Mama?”
“It was good,” Crystal Brown said, closing the door after her daughter. “I was just saying goodbye to this visitor who dropped by unannounced.”
“Hello, Papa. What’s this I hear about a visitor?” Steph took in the tea tray on the table, pouring three cups. “You even brought out the china,” she noted with surprise.
“He looked important, that Mr Head,” explained her mother.
Steph choked on her tea. “Your visitor said he was Jason Head?!”
“That’s right. How do you know his first name?” asked Arthur suspiciously.
“What was he here for?!”
“I couldn’t really say. He only stayed a couple minutes. Didn’t even have a cup of tea! Said he was feeling ill suddenly–I didn’t even get the chance to say I’m a nurse.”
“He said he wanted to meet the folks of a lady he’d met–you,” said Arthur. “Would you like to explain why we got this surprise visitor?”
“I’d love to explain that but I don’t have a clue, myself,” sputtered Steph. “I never even gave him your address or names.”
“Is he courting you, Steph?” asked her mother.
“No. We’re…friends, I guess. We dance at parties and talk over punch but that’s it. He’s not looking for a wife, and even if he was, he wouldn’t look at me. Foreign dukes don’t marry untitled old maids from the red light district with-”
“Steph, don’t say that about yourself, honey.” Crystal pulled her into her arms. “You’re a catch for any-did you say he’s a duke?”
Steph nodded. “Lady Gotham says he’s close with the royal family of Nanda Parbat, that’s how he became duke there.”
“A duke in my home! I never thought I’d see the day!”
~~~
Jason cut the connection to Talia’s two-way magical communication stone and sighed. She’d helped him through facing his feelings for Steph (she was much better at that than Waylon), and now he had a directive.
Back to the Browns’ it was.
She was at a friend’s house for the afternoon, but she had accepted an invitation to the Dumas’ ball that evening.
Jason thanked Crystal for her help and headed back to Jericho. The day was sunny but not too warm, so he decided to enjoy the fresh air a little longer and plot out what he would say when he saw her.
For a moment, he thought he was so invested that he was imagining seeing her, but no, there she was in all her glory, walking down the street…pushing a baby pram.
“Miss Stephanie!”
She glanced around, then up, surprise covering her face. “Your Grace?”
“May I join you?”
Her eyes flicked from the pram to Jericho to him, then she nodded slowly.
He slid out of the saddle and strolled beside her, leading Jericho along the edge of the street, such as it was.
“What are you doing here?”
“I…was just out for a ride after I visited your parents. I wished to speak with you, but you were out. This was pure coincidence.”
“It’s a lovely day for a ride,” she agreed, subdued.
“Are you alright? Not overcome with heat?” Jason bit back any more comments, recalling that women did not take the concern as such.
“I am fine, thank you.” She glanced in the pram, then back to him. “Not going to ask?”
“I didn’t think it was my business to ask.”
“This is my best friend’s baby, Emma. Sarah died in childbirth.” She turned to him. “Not a happy or comfortable story, I’m sure. Her father is working, so I often take care of her.”
“Who cares for her when you are busy?”
“One of the neighbours usually looks in on her. She’s a very easy baby,” Steph smiled, cooing at the child.
“How old is she?”
“About eight months.”
“You like children, then?” he asked, very much hoping she did.
“I do. What about you?”
“I love them, and they tend to like me, I find.”
Steph turned to a small house and opened the door. “I’ve just got to feed Emma and put her down for her nap. Would you like to wait in the parlour?”
“If it’s not an imposition. I can-”
“No, no trouble at all. Her father should be home soon and we can talk while you escort me home, if you don’t mind?”
“That sounds delightful, Miss Stephanie.” He tossed Jericho’s reins to a boy standing around. “Want a job?”
“Yes, mister,” he nodded, gap-toothed grin wide.
“If you make sure my horse here doesn’t run away in the next while, I’ll give you two more of these, what d’ya say?” He placed a shiny coin in the boy’s hand, smiling at his awed grin and ruffling his hair. “I shouldn’t be more than an hour.”
Jason made himself comfortable on the sofa in the parlour, watching Steph move around the kitchen heating up milk for Emma with smooth, oft-practiced movements. The house was small, with one hallway connecting the foyer, kitchen/dining room, parlour, and bedroom. With all the inside doors open, Jason perused the house at his leisure, often pausing to watch Steph instead.
She fed the baby, burped her, and put her to rest in the bedroom.
The faint sound of a lullaby drifted to Jason’s ears, and he closed his eyes to focus better on her song. She had a lovely voice.
Once Emma was asleep, Steph closed the door and joined him in the parlour. “I often leave supper for Emma’s father. Would you mind joining me in the kitchen while I prepare it?”
“Certainly not. Would you like my help with anything? Fetching wood for the fire, perhaps?”
“Oh, no, that’s not necessary.”
Steph deftly spun a cast-iron skillet on her palm and Jason noted to be very careful around her, especially when she had a possible weapon in her hands.
“So, how did you find my parents, Your Grace?” she asked, slicing potatoes.
“I asked around. I have some contacts in every part of the city, I imagine, and I knew yours were in the Bowery.”
“Then, why did you find my parents?”
“I wanted to meet the people you loved enough to give up your own love for.”
Steph’s knife paused, then resumed its slicing, slower than before. “And that’s all?”
“That’s the meat of it.”
She turned to the stove, her back to him, tossing the potatoes in with a healthy chunk of lard.
Jason had just begun to worry she’d decided never to speak to him again when she turned, shaking the potatoes onto a plate before immediately turning back around to cut something up..
“I suppose it’s none of my business. Thank you for waiting for me.”
“You’re more than welcome.” He resumed his seat on the sofa, glancing out the window at the sun setting on the horizon. Someone walking up the path caught his eye.
“There’s a man approaching,” he called to Steph.
“That’ll be Dean; I’ll be ready to go in a minute.”
Jason heard the door open, the sounds of someone coming in and making themself at home quiet. The man walked straight into the kitchen.
Steph greeted him cheerfully. “Good evening, Dean. Supper is warm in the oven, and Emma’s sleeping. I’ll be out of your hair in a moment.”
“Thanks, Steph, it smells good. But what if you don’t get out of my hair?”
Jason stiffened at the tone. He didn’t like how familiar this Dean was being to Steph, but he chalked it up to mere jealousy. The sight of Dean grasping Steph’s wrist, however, was something more than jealousy.
Steph saw him stand and silently asked him to stay back. He nodded, acquiescing for the moment, but stayed standing.
“What do you mean, Dean? It wouldn’t be prope-”
“Oh, come on, Steph, who cares what’s proper? Proper is for the snobs. You and I both know that no matter how much you end up in those society papers, you’ll never be a real lady. You’re from here, Stephie, you know no one gives a damn about us. No one would care about us and our ‘property’.”
Propriety , Steph mouthed to herself. “Dean, let go of me. You’re not doing yourself any favours by disparaging my ladylike reputation.”
“Oh look at you, Miss Brown,” Dean mocked, “all snooty with your fancy words. You think you’re better than me, huh? Just ‘cause your Duchess got your back? You think you’re better than Sarah was?”
“No, I do not. Sarah was better than me and she was certainly better than you. Social status has no bearing on a true gentleman, Dean. For the final time, I will not sleep with you, nor will I marry you so you can sleep with me.” Steph pulled her knife from behind her back and held it to Dean’s chin, leaning into his personal space. “Let. Me. Go. Now.”
Shakily, the man released his grip, practically flinging her away from him. “You crazy whore!”
“And never call me that again.” Steph tossed the knife at his chair, the point embedding itself in the wood between Dean’s legs.
She brushed her loosened locks out of her face, straightened her dress, and approached Jason with a smile. “I’m ready to go.”
He grabbed her hat and cloak and escorted her as quickly as he could out of the residence.
“Are you okay, Miss Stephanie?”
The cool twilight air was refreshing, cooling his overheated blood from watching the altercation. He walked calmly beside Jericho, collected from the kid and given double the pay since the time had extended.
She nodded and gave him a small, fake smile. “I will be. His words don’t hold much weight, but even a single sheet of paper can cause you to bleed.”
“You handled yourself remarkably back there. If I may ask, how did you learn to throw a knife that accurately?”
“My father worked as an entertainer at the circus for several years,” she explained. “I became friends with many of the performers there and during the quiet times, many of them taught me their specialties. I had an affinity for the knife tricks and acrobatics, among others.”
“A woman of many talents, indeed,” he complimented with a surprised grin. “Is it safe to leave Emma there?”
“She will be fine for the short term. I’ll go get her and her things in a day or two once he’s calmed down and bring her home.”
“Would you like an escort?” He saw her look and hastily added, “In case there is more luggage than you can carry when you’ve also got the baby?”
“If you wouldn’t mind, that would be very helpful. Thank you.”
“I live to serve, my lady.”
~~~
The next week, Jason barely saw Stephanie at all, as she was occupied with caring for Emma and getting her settled into her new home. She had turned down several invitations, and Jason began to wonder if he should even bother attending the last few events of the season at all.
Then Steph showed up at the Waynes’ Summer Celebration Ball, the event that heralded the beginning of the season’s end.
She looked beautiful in her new lilac dress, the blooms entwined in her updo. Jason bet Babs had a hand in that.
She was popular tonight, and Jason didn’t get a chance to dance with her or even talk before her card filled up and she was handed around.
Doing his best not to lose his temper at something so beyond their control, he headed out the open patio doors to the garden, enjoying the quiet from the boisterous event and the beauty of nature. He still preferred it on Stephanie.
He didn’t know how long he’d been brooding in the gardens (far too long and far too much like his previous father figure for his liking) when he noticed a flash of lilac in the maze.
“Miss Stephanie?” He followed her, only catching glimpses of the silk as he headed deeper and deeper into the maze.
As he walked, the layout came back to him. He could see the path Steph had been taking, and he knew a shortcut. Granted, he’d grown both in height and width, but he’d been very careful not to lose his flexibility along with his scrawniness. If he just cut through…
His arms came out, supporting Steph as she ran into him with a muffled shriek.
“I apologise for scaring you, Miss Stephanie. Are you quite alright?”
“No,” she panted. “Dean…after me…”
“What?” His head jerked up, looking around for the odious man.
“He was following me, I tried to lose him, thought you were him,” she breathed, not moving away from his hold.
“I’ll have Wayne’s men spread out and look for the man, okay?” he said, brushing a loose curl behind her ear.
She nodded, smiling up at him gratefully, before suddenly realising their position and jumping away. “Oh, my.”
“My apologies, Miss Stephanie. I’ll escort you back to the ballroom and then find Wayne.”
He tucked her arm into his and headed down the quickest way out of the maze.
“You seem to know this maze quite well, Your Grace.”
He shrugged. “I’m good with directions.”
~~~
Jason did not call Wayne’s men. Jason headed out to the grounds alone..
Closing his eyes, he breathed deeply, letting the velvety scent of Alfred’s roses, the mingled perfumes of the party, and the rich scent of damp earth fill his nose.
The hoot of an owl sounded deep in the woods behind the Manor, blending with the chittering of bats flying about eating bugs and the muted strains of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony from the ballroom.
Light tremors under his feet told him that someone was approaching him. He inwardly snickered. Trying to be stealthy, the fool. He was trained by the League of Assassins, who lived–nay, thrived–in the shadows.
He turned, unable to see his companion’s face as they were backlit by the Manor. “Is that you, Harper?” he drawled, striking a match and lighting a cigar.
He didn’t care for the things after…well, after , but sometimes a man needed a cigar to light to see his companion’s face.
“You’re not Harper,” he said brilliantly, lifting the cigar to his lips.
“You bet your lily-white ass I ain’t,” snarled Dean Smith, the glow of Jason’s cigar reflecting on the silver blade of his knife.
“No, you’re Dean Smith, widower of Sarah Smith and father to Emma Smith, employee at the My Alibi saloon, where you apparently take supporting your job a little too seriously. You’re also someone who insulted the woman I intend to marry, and I don’t take that lightly. She’s too good for you to even look at her, nevermind propose you touch her.”
“Oh, what are you going to do, my lord?” Dean bowed mockingly. “I saw you at my house with her. So she’s too good for me, but not too good to take your lordly c-”
Jason punched his lights out in one blow. Apparently Waylon might have some truth to his words of having a thicker skull than average.
He put out his cigar and pocketed the knife Dean had dropped. Sauntering up the hill to the ballroom, he caught one of Bruce’s footmen’s attention.
“There’s an uninvited guest having a little snooze out in the garden. Bring him to the Commisioner, please, and tell him to hold him overnight for disturbing the peace. Thanks.”
Humming the final bars to the Symphony along with the musicians, he opened the patio doors and entered the ballroom.
The chatter died instantly as everyone turned to look at him. He looked back in confusion. He was sure no one had seen him punch Dean, and anyways, he was a duke and Dean a commoner. No one here would care, he sneered inwardly.
Steph’s watery blue eyes met his from her place in Babs’s arms and she shook her head minutely. He frowned a little, confused. He knew she hadn’t seen him punch Dean out, and he was fairly sure she’d praise him for it, anyways.
He missed the punch thrown his way by a blur of black and blue.
~~~
Steph rubbed her thumb nervously over Jason’s, his hand between hers. His eyelids fluttered and his gorgeous teal eyes stared into hers. “Hi.”
“Hi.” She smiled back. “You’re awake.”
“What happened?” He sat up, running his free hand along his facial features. “ Ow .”
She winced in sympathy. “Sorry about that.”
“You did this?” He turned to her in disbelief. “Did I do something?”
“Did you do something?” came an echoing growl of disbelief from the doorway.
Steph winced again. “Dick, stop .”
“No, I will not.”
“ Dick . Let me explain. In peace ,” she gritted out. “It’s the least you could do after punching His Grace out and making a big deal out of nothing !”
Dick huffed and opened his mouth to retort, but subsided at her fierce glare.
She turned back to Jason.
“I am so sorry for him. What happened was that Lady Adelia Elliot was getting proposed to by Lord Duma in the garden and saw me, alone with you, in the garden, and then loudly announced that the garden was the most lovely, romantic spot to get engaged in, and she hoped we had found it to be like that as well, which, of course, meant that society is convinced that I am compromised and a whore and we should get married to get back in their good graces. But not too fast, because that would mean I’m with child. Which is ridiculous, I mean, in the garden ? All wet and pokey? No, thank you.”
Jason huffed a laugh. “Thank you for that explanation. So I assume that blur that was the last thing I saw was Duke Bludhaven over there protecting your honour?”
“More or less,” she admitted. “I am so sorry for this mess.”
“Nonsense, it’s not your fault. I shouldn’t have followed you knowing what society would think of it. I’m sorry for putting you in this situation. As a man, my reputation is much less delicate than yours, and I sincerely apologize.”
Dick snorted from his doorway, the heavily implied ‘you should be’ hanging in the air.
“Steph, can you give me a minute with His Grace?”
She sighed but nodded, removing her hand from Jason's. “You get one free punch,” she stage-whispered as she left, leaving him with a smile on his face.
It was the least she could do after being part of the cause of this fiasco.
~~~
“What happened out in the garden?” Dick demanded immediately, taking Steph’s chair as soon as she was gone.
Jason straightened his position on his chair in response. How do you like being the little brother now, huh?
“I was outside, enjoying the fresh air in the gardens, when I noticed Miss Brown entering the maze. I followed her, as I had been intending to speak with her this evening. When I found her, she told me a man she knows had been following her. I escorted her back to the courtyard. I stayed out longer for a cigar and saw a commoner with a knife. He threatened me and insulted her, so I punched him and had one of Wayne’s men take him to your father-in-law.”
Dick stared at him, measuring his words.
“Are you interested in courting Stephanie?”
“I was attempting to get her attention tonight to talk to her about that. I would like nothing more than to court Stephanie Brown with the intention of marriage.”
Dick nodded once. “Good. Your timeline is moved up; you will marry her once the banns are read.”
“If she says no?” Jason asked curiously.
Dick sighed, running his fingers through his hair. “She won’t.”
Jason raised his eyebrow but dropped the subject. Nodding curtly to Dick, he exited the small study he’d been sat in while he was unconscious.
Alone, he ran his hand over his nose and jaw once more. Thank goodness for Lazarus-enhanced healing; he could feel the bruises already beginning to fade. With a sigh he dropped his head to inspect his boots.
How was he going to break the news to his lovely bride-to-be?
~~~
Dearest gentle Reader,
Nothing is more sought-after by society than a scandal, which is the lemon to our tea, the butter to our bread, and the very reason I picked up my quill.
I have picked it up once more to inform you all of the latest scandal, which has set the whole ton abuzz.
The Waynes’ annual Summer Celebration Ball last night was a veritable goldmine of news. Lady Adelia Elliot is engaged to be married to Lord Aleksander Duma, a fine match indeed.
But the true scandal comes from the revelation Lady Adelia shared with the ton as she announced her engagement, namely, that Miss Stephanie Brown and the Duke of Altheban were seen in the garden together, unchaperoned.
Rumours have been shared with many that the protegee of the Duchess of Bludhaven has borne a child out of wedlock, with sources saying they have seen her with an infant many times.
Thus, it is to my surprise that I share with you the news of the Duke’s engagement to Miss Brown. Perhaps he has not been so recently appeared in our midst as he would have us believe?
Steph threw the paper across the room. A hand caught it in its fluttering descent. She turned in surprise. “Your Grace?”
“Good afternoon, Miss Brown,” he bowed over her hand politely, then turned back to peruse the paper.
“Please, don’t-”
“I already know what they are saying, Miss Stephanie. It appears even being a man and a duke does only so much for my reputation.”
She winced.
“I wonder if I accidentally slighted this Lady Gotham somehow? She certainly does not pull her punches,” he shook his head.
“I am sorry that you are put in this mess because of me–and because of Dick. I can try and reason with him, to let you out of whatever ridiculous plan he’s cooked up to attempt to salvage my–our–reputations. It’s been sensationalized for the papers, of course–they’re even saying we’re engaged, for goodness’ sake!”
Jason coughed. “Yes, about that…I came here to ask you to come somewhere with me.”
She paused, then shrugged and drew closer to him. “Where?”
“Do you know how to ride?”
“Yes.”
“Lovely! There’s a beautiful spot I’ve found that I’d like to show you.”
“It’s not like our reputations can get worse,” she decided. “Lead the way, Your Grace.”
The ride was peaceful, with only Jason and the sounds of nature to torment her. The green grass, the texture of the trees, the birds wheeling through the air, the smell of fresh sea breeze all painted a lovely picture.
Jason nudged her horse to the left, towards a short copse of trees. They arrived at a large flat stone, spread with a blanket and cushions, a basket sitting in the midst.
Jason slid off Jericho and offered her his hand to dismount her horse, Spoiler.
“I thought you might like a picnic.”
“This is lovely.” She took in the preparations and the view, realising that this was the type of thing a man did for the lady he was courting.
“Your Grace…are you courting me?” she asked slowly, unsure which answer she wanted to hear.
He looked up from the wine he was pouring into two glasses, the white streak in his hair failing into his eyes. He looked so casual and comfortable there, and her heart did a funny beat.
“What if I am? Would you accept it?”
She settled onto one of the fluffy cushions, picking at a bunch of grapes. “If this is about the scandal…”
“It is not.”
She decided to take his word for it and popped the grape in her mouth. The lunch went smoothly, the two of them easily settling into their usual conversation comfortably.
Then Jason pulled out something from the basket. She was sure they’d exhausted its contents and opened her mouth to politely refuse.
Then he revealed his hand and looked up at her earnestly. “Stephanie Brown, will you do me the honour of marrying me and becoming my wife?”
Her mouth snapped shut, unsure what to say. His steady smile made her want to melt and agree to anything, but she didn’t want to jump into what would be the rest of her life.
“Are you sure? This isn’t something Dick is making you do? I assure you, I will not be hurt if you retract your proposal.”
“My proposal has nothing to do with Duke Grayson and what is currently in the papers,” he assured her.
“Then, yes, I would be honoured to marry you, Your Grace.”
He slid the gold ring onto her finger, the light catching and playing on the amethyst set in it. “Now that we are engaged, you must stop calling me ‘Your Grace’ and instead call me Jason.”
“I will, but only if you drop the ‘Miss’,” she replied.
“Deal, Stephanie.”
“Deal, Jason.”
They shook on their first decision as a couple.
~~~
The next couple weeks, Steph barely saw her new fiance, occupied as she was with wedding planning and looking after Emma. That was another thing she needed to talk to him about.
Babs hadn’t been married that long ago, and she still knew all the best places to get the best deals for all the preparations, which was a huge help to Steph, who did not frequent the places that duchesses did.
Oh, she was going to be a duchess. She couldn’t stop the nauseated anxiety she felt, wondering if she had completely ruined her life beyond repair.
She really needed to talk to Jason.
“Steph, the duke is in Dick’s study, asking for you.” Babs told her, breaking her attention from the fabric swatches for her wedding breakfast’s napkins.
She breathed a sigh of relief. “Thanks, Babs. Everything on the right here I’ve already dismissed.”
“I’ll have it removed, then, and replaced with some tea. Or would you like me to send it to the study so you can have it with His Grace?”
“I’ll ask him if he’s got enough time for tea,” Steph replied. “Just have it brought here and I’ll come get it if he does.”
Babs nodded in response and Steph headed out of the drawing room to the study down the hall.
She paused outside the door, hearing her name.
“-marry you. You were quicker than I expected, Head,” Dick sounded almost pleased.
“It’s not what I wanted, but I’m an opportunist; I couldn’t let the situation go to waste,” Jason replied.
“I’m pleased you did the right thing. Steph deserves what you can offer her.”
There was some sound from Jason but Steph didn’t listen, opening the door with a firm click.
~~~
“Babs said Jason was here,” Steph said neutrally, but Jason couldn’t tell if she’d overheard what he and Dick had been talking about or not. “Is there something we needed to discuss, Your Grace?” she raised an eyebrow at him.
“Not right now,” he replied slowly.
“Then it’s good to see you. I hope everything is going smoothly on your end, and I’ll see you in the church on Tuesday.”
He bowed his head as she left, turning back to Dick with a bewildered expression.
“Babs was very short with me when we got married, too. They’re busy planning the wedding breakfast, after all.”
He nodded, but thought it was a little more than that. He needed to speak with her privately, but they hadn’t had a moment alone, never mind a moment, since they were engaged.
~~~
Steph opened her window, frowning. Jason stood below, waving at her with a smile, dropping a handful of pebbles behind his back into the garden.
“It is nearly midnight, what do you want?” she called in a loud whisper, too tired and put out to care about niceties.
“I’m sorry it’s so late, but will you come down for a minute so we can talk, please?”
She huffed and closed the window. They were getting married in ten hours, what couldn’t wait until then to say? Unless…they weren’t getting married?
She threw her robe on, yanked the tie shut, and speedily tiptoed down the steps, avoiding the creaky ones, to the side door, where Jason was waiting.
“Thank you,” he said when he saw her. “I needed to ask you what you heard when I was talking to Grayson in the study.”
“Why?” she looked at him sternly. “Is there something I need to know?”
“No. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t misunderstand a fragment of conversation you didn’t have context to.”
“Tell me, then, what were you talking about before I came in?”
“Grayson was thanking me for proposing to you so quickly, and I was refusing his thanks because I did not do it for him.”
That sounded rather rehearsed . “Well, then, sounds like everything’s clear,” she crossed her arms. “Anything else to say, Your Grace?”
“We’re alone, can’t you call me Jason?”
“I am capable of that, yes.”
“You seem angry at me, but I don’t know why. If I did or said something, could you at least tell me so I can apologise or attempt to fix it?”
She huffed at his rational words. “I’m being unfair. Just let me hold this grudge for ten more hours, okay?”
He gave her a perplexed look but agreed.
“Oh, I also wanted to speak to you…would you mind terribly if I brought Emma with me?”
“Of course not. I assumed you were part of the same parcel, I have a room already prepared for her.”
“You do?” she asked in disbelief.
“I’d show it to you, but I’m afraid that would be even more scandalous than what we’re doing right now,” he grinned.
She punched his arm.
“Ow!”
“I’m sorry, did it actually hurt?” she gasped, running her hand gently over the spot she’d hit.
“No, it’s just a little sensitive from my boxing earlier.”
“You box?” She tilted her head. “I could see that.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I don’t mean anything by it, I just- your figure-”
There was no way to save herself, and she gave up with a blush as he grinned at her, pleased.
~~~
Babs was Steph’s witness, and Roy stood with Jason, the rest of their handful of family and friends filling the two front rows of pews in the church. The ceremony was short and simple, and the congregation headed to the fancier wedding breakfast held in the Graysons’ manor, in lieu of the bride’s house.
The couple were bounced from person to person, receiving well-wishes and advice, most of which they ignored.
Finally Babs gave Steph the signal to leave, and she breathed a sigh of relief at the escape.
Jason handed her into his carriage, then sprang in after her, still holding her hand.
They waved the remaining well-wishers off and headed to Jason’s home.
His home turned out to be a small (compared to ones like the Waynes’ or Kanes’) manor on the edge of the city, about halfway between the Waynes’ and Graysons’ and the Browns’. He had bought it before he even met her, but Steph still found it a happy convenience. Maybe it was a sign they were meant to be together.
“I apologize, there are very few servants around, since it was just me here and I don’t need much help,” explained Jason. “Feel free to hire whomever you think we need.”
“I grew up being the servant, Jason,” she reminded him. “I think I’ll manage with who you have now. Babs did recommend I get a maid now that…now that I’m a duchess; it’ll make things easier.”
Jason made an agreeing noise. “I had your things delivered already, so they should be in your rooms already.”
She glanced at him but he didn’t appear to notice, continuing the tour.
“I don’t use this wing much, but it’s in good shape if you want to have it turned into a music room or something.”
The tour continued, Jason pointing out his most-used rooms so she could find him easily. She enjoyed this peek into his life, measuring all the things he’d furnished his home with. It wasn’t nearly as fancy and pretentious as some of the other nobles’ houses, but seemed more lived-in and arranged for comfort and ease. If this was the bachelor touch she’d heard about, she couldn’t fathom why society hated it so.
Various items from his travels were scattered about, interspersed with weapons from different cultures and paintings and artwork from a range of eras. “You have lovely taste,” she complimented.
“Thank you. My mother would be proud to hear that–she taught me most of what I know.”
“Is your mother still alive?”
“Oh, yes, she’s quite well back in Nanda Parbat. I was meaning to ask you, what do you think about travelling to Altheban soon?”
Steph blinked. “I think that sounds lovely. How soon is ‘soon’?”
Jason hesitated. “Within three weeks?”
“That’s doable, then,” she agreed. “I won’t bother unpacking much of Emma’s or my things, then.”
“Where is Emma?” asked Jason.
“My mother said she’d keep her for the week until we got settled in, so she wouldn’t be in the midst of all the mess.”
“Oh. Thoughtful of her.”
~~~
Steph paced in her room, the continual breeze of her stride making the candles flicker every time she passed. She should’ve taken Babs up on her offer of a temporary maid until she found one herself. Now she was stuck in her dress, trying to figure out a way to get out without asking her brand-new husband for help.
Stupid fancy dresses.
Expelling her pride with a long sigh, she headed to the door separating her from Jason. It opened to reveal him shirtless, his back to her as he appeared to be fiddling with his pants.
She stepped back into her room, an apology on her lips, when he turned. “Did you need something?”
Her hand dropped from her face. “What happened?” she gasped, taking in the marks covering his body. She’d helped her mother often enough to know those were scars, and they weren’t easy to get.
“It’s nothing,” he shrugged, reaching for his discarded shirt.
“It’s not nothing,” she insisted. “Who hurt you?”
He took her hands in his, lowering them from tracing over the marks and facing her with a reassuring smile. “I’m okay, Steph. I’ve been in some…situations…of my own volition, and this was the price I paid. They’ve been healed and treated by a professional. I appreciate your worry, but I’m fine. I’m sorry, I should have warned you.”
“No, it’s my fault, I should have knocked. I apologise.”
“What did you want?”
She tore her gaze away from his well-defined chest muscles to meet his concerned teal gaze.
“I…my dress is too difficult to get in and out of,” she muttered. “Could you…?”
She turned her back to him, brushing her hair over one shoulder.
He took a breath and stepped closer. His fingers brushed against her neck as he brushed some stray strands out of the way.
She could feel his body heat behind her, warming her through and igniting a fire in her belly. Each accidental touch as he undid the buttons, each gust of air over her shoulder, every cell he touched as he undid the laces only stoked it higher.
The dress and corset loosened as the bands of anticipation tightened around her chest.
Her dress pooled around her ankles as it finally slipped free.
Jason released a long breath behind her. She barely felt the graze of his lips on her bare shoulder before they were gone.
His warmth moved away. He cleared his throat. “All done.”
She turned to face him, holding her breath. “Will you kiss me?”
He nodded once, shuffling forward so their toes touched and wrapping his arm around her waist to pull her to him. The other trailed up her arm lightly, raising the small hairs and making her shiver in anticipation.
Her eyes slid closed as his face drew nearer, and then his lips met hers. Softly at first, tentatively, feeling her out. She pushed back, determined not to let this be the only kiss they shared. The fire in her spread through her veins, making her wrap her arms around his neck and pull him into her.
The arm around her waist tightened, and he deepened the kiss, his fingers curling around her neck and kissing her back with just as much passion.
They finally separated, gasping for air, eyes dark and mouths panting.
“Do you really wanna do this?”
She nodded vigorously. “Do you?”
He snorted a half-laugh. “Look at you, of course I do.”
Then he pulled her closer and proceeded to kiss any further remarks out of her head.
Steph ended up naked as the day she was born on the bed, underclothes spread over the room, watching in fascination at just how fast a man could undress when he was truly motivated.
He looked up and returned her grin with a hungry one of his own. “Ready?”
“For whaaa-Jason!” she exclaimed as he grabbed her ankles and pulled her down the bed.
He grinned up at her surprise, head bracketed by her knees. “Hold on to the duvet.”
“For whaaa-Jason!”
He knelt between her thighs, licking at her core like a man starved. She grasped a handful of bedsheets, throwing her head back in pleasure as his nose bumped against her clit with every movement of his head, his steady ministrations quickly building her pleasure up to unbearable heights. She fell with a loud gasp of his name, hand flying to his head to grip his hair instead of the sheets.
He pulled away, licking his lips in a manner far too indecent, and gave her a pleased look. She scooted up the bed to lie against the pillows, and he joined her on the other side.
“Come straddle me,” he said, pulling her hand toward him to kiss her fingers.
Affection shone from his eyes, and she felt herself melting even further.
Settling over his hips, she leaned forward to kiss him softly, her fingers tracing the raised skin on his chest and arms. “Is it very dangerous in Nanda Parbat?”
“It’s probably the safest place you’ll be in the world,” he told her between kisses. “I think you’ll like it. You’ll fit right in, with your knife throwing.”
Steph thought that raised a few more questions, but then Jason was nibbling on her neck and she decided they could wait for later. The fire inside her had been temporarily held under control when he gave her that orgasm, but it was steadily burning hotter again.
She shivered as Jason’s warm hand brushed lightly over her belly, the sensitive skin there not used to touch. He moved to her legs, running his fingertips teasingly up her calves to her knees, then her thighs.
His head dipped even lower as his mouth found her breasts, heightening the flames within her. He still seemed so composed, even with her kissing up his neck and teasing his nipples.
She wanted to make him burn just as much as her.
His fingers trailed up to the apex of her thighs, finding her still thoroughly wet. One slid in, making her gasp in pleasure. Yes, that was what she needed. She felt so empty.
“More,” she told him breathily, nipping his earlobe. He added a second, finding her sweet spot and rubbing in just the right way. She shifted so the angle was better, feeling her orgasm coiling in her lower belly.
Her hand trailed down his chest, uncaring, until she reached his rather erect cock. His fingers paused as he let out a pained sound.
She wrapped her fingers around him slowly, stroking him at the same pace he was using on her. He added a third finger, stretching her nicely.
Abruptly he pulled his fingers out of her, leaning back to see her. “Please stop, or I’m not gonna last,” he asked, his other hand stilling her wrist. “Can I-”
“Please,” she begged, missing his fingers already. She could only imagine what his cock would feel like inside her.
Settling herself over it, she slowly slid down, relishing the look on Jason’s face. There, now he was showing how unravelled he was feeling. She took him until their pelvises met, swaying her hips teasingly.
Jason groaned. “Steph, please, don’t tease.”
Feeling too wound up and close to orgasm to be bratty, she began setting a steady pace. His fingers gripped her hips as an anchor as he began to thrust up to meet her. Her temporarily delayed orgasm came building up with a vengeance.
Her fingers dug into his shoulders as she came with a cry of his name; he followed after her.
They lay in each other’s arms, content to be skin-to-skin as they caught their breath.
Steph hummed contentedly as Jason ran his fingers up and down her spine.
“Was that good for you?”
“Of course it was–I orgasmed twice. What about you?”
“Better than good,” he kissed her quickly, then lay silent for a while. Finally he took a deep breath. “I know you married me because of the situation, but…do you think you could love me one day?”
Steph blinked rapidly at him, surprised at the sudden deep talk and the implications of the question.
“I didn’t marry you because of the situation,” she finally said. “Although that was certainly a part of it. I am already halfway in love with you, Jason. I know I’ll love you.”
“Really?”
She nodded definitively. “Really. Could you love me ?”
Jason kissed her softly, full of feeling. “I do love you. It’s hard not to, believe me, I tried.”
She narrowed her eyes at him but decided to drop it, snuggling further into his chest. “Would you have married me if we hadn’t been forced to?”
“When I was looking for you in the garden that night, it was to ask you if we could talk. I wanted to propose to you before…that, although it didn’t happen in the way I’d hoped,” he sighed.
“It’s not what I wanted, but I’m an opportunist; I couldn’t let the situation go to waste.”
Steph recalled his words from the study, context helping it make more sense. She kissed him thoroughly. “You make me happy, Jason Head.”
“You make me happy, Stephanie Head.”
Dearest Reader,
As the season comes to a close, so too does the Duke of Altheban’s stay with us. We wish the duke and duchess and their newly adopted daughter safe travels as they take their leave, heading to the Duke’s native lands in Nanda Parbat, where they are sure to have many more adventures. We hope to see the Head family back in our midst one day.
With the season over, so I too shall disappear from your lives, gone but I hope certainly not forgotten. Until next season,
Adieu.
Lady Gotham
A/N 3:
-Thank you for reading and to @jaysteph-events for hosting this <3 -Join the JaySteph Discord (18+)! -The Duma and Elliot families are from DC canon as Gothamite socialite families. Duma is Polish, so I used the Polish spelling of Alexander for Lord Duma’s name. I couldn’t think why that had a nice ring to it until I remembered Alexandre Dumas, the author. He’s a few decades later, though, so there’s no overlap between him and my character. -Nursing wasn’t exactly the respected career it is now, since it was pre-Florence Nightingale. Jason, having trained somewhat [my hc] with (Middle) Eastern healers, who were more advanced and hygienic, would have more respect for nurses. -Jason’s horse is named Jericho, not after Deathstroke's kid, but after the make of Jason’s primary guns. I’m pretty sure Jericho 941s didn’t exist in 1810, so I used the name for his horse instead. -I was listening to Beethoven’s 5th as I wrote the scene where it’s playing in the background. Classical music is surprisingly fun background music for a scene where a character gets punched in the face :) And to those of you curious about if the 5th symphony existed in 1810, yes, it did–I looked it up: Beethoven wrote it in 1808. -I purposefully left this somewhat open ended so I can come back and write more in this AU when I want, such as Steph meeting Talia and the Bats finding out Jason is their Jason. -If there’s something I left unclear or you’d like to know more about some scene or read a specific future scenario, please leave a comment!
DR!!! For the WIP game, Angel shoulder verse [Jaysteph & Riddlebat] !!!!!
(Also I don't usually see your blog on Desktop and I am LIVING for the green/purple color scheme, you are giving me such 60's Eddie who is MY FAVE!!!)
Hello River!! Omg, I'm sorry for the very delayed response... I'm currently living a kinda 'distant phase' with the fandom world including with my own content. BUT. I love what you do, you are such a talented writer on top of being a lovely person to talk to, and I need you to know that those little emoji-like characters you use are the cutest things ever. I wanna pet them on the head like kittens ^^ Awww, thank you for the compliments on my blog's aesthetic! 60's Eddie is a CLASSIC, I'm super soft for... a lot of Riddler versions, but I ENJOY his past selves compared to everything my poor baby angel has been through since that ugly New 52 / Reboot era that ruined his character. I live for the blessed time he was a nerdy genius riddled with issues who nurtures a huge crush on Batman... and plays in a perfect chaotic neutral position ;)
Now, Angel shoulder verse! I admit it's a doc in which I've simply written a couple words a while ago, but I hope it'll become a short One-Shot in near future! Here's a summary of what this might look like once I properly work on it:
Concept: it's sort of a 'crack treated seriously' idea, with Edward and Bruce being the angel and the demon on Stephanie's shoulders. Aka, they are her invisible / magical protectors who live with her since her birth and constantly try to guide her decisions. In this world, everyone has their own attached angel and demon, but no human is supposed to actually see them / hear them, they are simply influenced by them in their head. Except that Steph sees them, hears them fight, flirt and coo over her head because they get along a little too well, and she is so done with their antics. She loves them though, her disastrous-but-hilarious sort of 'weird adopted magical tiny dads', who consider her their daughter and want what's best for her. As for Jason, he is another human... who happens to become teenage Stephanie's first real crush. Needless to say, her angel & demon dads are in for quite a great big dose of stress. Until they eventually accept the boy plus his own angel & demon duo (who are either Harvey and Selina or Pamela and Harley, I haven't decided yet). In for shenanigans! ;)
**********************************************************************
She sat on the water-tower and watched as they moved across the rooftops; they stopped in the middle and began discussing something. The tall one looked down at the smaller one and nodded to the street. “Stay along the rooftops and check the streets while I look for Selina.”
“Selina’s not around here Batman,” she called coyly.
The two of them whirled around, their eyes moving up until they found her. “Kit.”
She stood up from the water-tower and spread her arms. “In the flesh, Batman.”
The young boy beside him took a step forward. “Where’s Catwoman, Kit?”
Her eyes flitted to the bright colored boy, and she grinned. “Careful Robin…foxes eat birds.”
Scoffing, he crossed his arms over his suited chest. “You wouldn’t do a damn thing to me.”
She raised an eyebrow and hopped down, landing in front of them. “You aren’t the only one with skills, Robin. And we both know who’s the better fighter.” She walked by them, stopping at the ledge before turning to Batman. “Selina had business elsewhere.”
“Where is she?” he asked.
She shrugged. “Dunno. She might be my mentor, but she doesn’t tell me everything.” Gesturing to him, she quipped, “You’d have better luck using those detective skills of yours to find her.”
As she started to walk away, she paused and turned as if remembering something and looked at Robin. “Do you always keep your wallet on you? Or is it just right now?”
“What are you talking about, Kit?” he questioned, brows furrowing in confusion.
She flashed a grin and waved a black leather wallet, enjoying the way his eyes widened at the sight, then patted at his pants; her tone was heavy with challenge as she provoked, “Catch me if you can, little bird.” That was all she said before taking off down the wall, running along the streets.
Robin jerked forward, seemingly forgetting that Batman was beside him as he hauled after her. “GET BACK HERE, KIT!”
Batman sighed as he watched the two teens chase each other, one continually shouting the other giggling, then a voice called from behind him. “They’re almost like a miniature version of us, aren’t they, Bat?”
He tipped his head to the woman standing on the other rooftop. “Selina.”
She smirked and turned, walking away. “Let’s play a game of tag, shall we?” He grunted as he began running after her.
***
She could hear Robin’s feet slam against the pavement with each step he took, and she huffed a laugh. “You’re not supposed to let people hear you, Robin! I thought Batman taught you how to be quiet!”
“I’m gonna be quiet when I get my wallet back from you!”
“Is that before or after I take the money inside?”
“DON’T TOUCH MY MONEY, KIT!”
“So touchy, Robin.” Her hands gripped the ledge as she pulled herself up and onto the rooftop; her feet carried her to the edge of the building, and she peered over it, mumbling to herself, “That’s a little too big of a jump for me to make.”
She turned around and was met by his chest as he slammed into her; her eyes widened as everything moved in slow-motion as they fell over the edge. The wind whipped by them as they fell, and she couldn’t stop the blood-curdling scream that tore through her throat.
An arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her close, then the click of the grapple-gun sounded in her ears, followed by his low and confident voice. “I’ve got us Kit, don’t worry.”
Her hands clenched in his suit as the grapple hooked into a building, and they swung down to the roof below. When their feet touched the ground, she pulled away and slung her fist into his stomach. He bent over, holding his stomach and she exploded. “Are you insane, Robin! We could’ve died! How about next time, you watch where the fuck you’re running!”
She turned away and stalked off when a hand curled in hers. “Wait a second, Kit.” She paused, glancing down at him, then he rose and rubbed the spot she’d punched. “Damn, you’ve got one hell of an arm.” She felt the corner of her mouth raise and he matched her grin. “See…you’re not that mad at me.”
Scoffing, she retorted, “Considering the fact that we almost became a giant splatter on the pavement? I’m a little mad.”
“I had us.”
She leaned forward and poked his chest. “And what would’ve happened if you hadn’t?”
He paused for a minute, then laced his fingers with hers. “Then we wouldn’t have been able to go to prom in a few weeks.” He went quiet, then looked at her. “You are still gonna go to prom with me, right, (Y/N)?”
“Yeah, Jason…I am.”
Grinning, he nodded to the diner just across the street. “Wanna get some food?”
“Sure.”
They began walking towards the diner, sliding down the fire-escape and to the street; they crossed the street and stepped into the joint. When the food was ready, they took it back to the roof, sitting down on the ledge, eating, while cracking jokes back and forth.
(Y/N) was sipping on her milkshake when Jason went quiet, and she eyed him. “What’s wrong, Jay?”
He glanced at her then shook his head. “It’s nothing.”
“It’s obviously something. You aren’t usually this quiet.”
Jason stayed silent for a moment. “…I’m going to Ethiopia soon.”
Her eyes widened, and she leaned close. “For what?”
His gaze seemed heavy when he looked at her. “I’m finding my mother.”
“I thought Catherine was your mom?”
Jason nodded. “She was…but she wasn’t my biological mother.”
“When are you leaving?”
“In a couple days.”
“You’re going to be back in time for prom, right?”
Jason snorted. “Yes, (Y/N). I won’t stand you up at prom.”
She grinned. “Good.” It was silent for a second, then she spoke softly. “Does Bruce know?” When he didn’t answer, she found her own, sighing, “Jason, it’s not a good idea to leave without letting Bruce know.”
He nodded. “I know…but Bruce isn’t who I need to tell right now.” He took her hand. “It’s you.” His other hand fumbled in his utility belt, and he pulled out a silver band that held a peridot in the middle; he held it out to her, and she took it, then stared at him.
“Jason…what’s this?”
“A ring.”
(Y/N) sighed and rolled her eyes. “No shit, Sherlock. Couldn’t figure that out myself.” She paused. “Why though?”
“It’s a promise ring.”
She felt the breath leave her lungs and her eyes went wide. “A promise ring?”
He nodded and squeezed her hand. “I know we’re too young to get married right now, (Y/N). But I love you, and at some point, in my life, I that to become ‘our life’.”
(Y/N) was speechless at his confession, and she pulled off her mask, questioning, “Are you being serious right now? Because if this is a joke, after I beat the shit out of you, I will break up with you, and never speak to you again.”
Jason snorted. “I’m being one-hundred percent serious, (Y/N). I want to marry you someday, and this ring serves as a testament to that.” He squeezed her hand again. “So, what do you say? Wanna make a promise?”
(Y/N) felt tears gather in her eyes, and she shifted, wrapping her arms around his neck; she nodded, and choked out, “Yes!” She pulled back, pressing her lips to his; she murmured against his mouth. “Yes, I do.”
Jason grinned, and pulled her close, and rested his forehead against hers. “I love you, (Y/N).”
“I love you too, Jason.”
***A Few Weeks Later***
She walked into the apartment, closing the door behind her; she kicked off the black heels and began fumbling with the dress zipper. Selina tipped her head around the wall. “What are you doing home so early, hon?” She glanced down at her wristwatch. “Prom wasn’t supposed to be over until eleven. It’s nine.”
(Y/N) glanced at her as she pulled the zipper down. “Jason wasn’t there.”
“He stood you up?”
She shrugged. “If he did, he’d better have a damn good reason for it.”
Selina observed her for a few seconds. “Are you okay, hon?”
“I’m beginning to worry about Jason.” She sighed.
“Why’s that?”
“Because ever since Jason left for Ethiopia, he hasn’t sent me a single message.” (Y/N) paused and looked at her. “Jason isn’t one to keep me in the dark. He would’ve called by now.”
Selina moved forward and placed her hands on (Y/N)’s shoulders. “He’s probably spending time with his mom.”
(Y/N) stared at her before sighing, nodding, “You’re probably right.” She pulled away from Selina’s grip and moved to her bedroom, stopping as she closed the door. “I’ll go see Bruce tomorrow and ask.”
“You might not be able to find Bruce.”
She cocked an eyebrow at her comment. “And why not?”
Selina’s gaze turned solemn. “Something’s wrong with Bruce he’s becoming…ruthless and careless.”
(Y/N) took in her words and nodded. “I’ll see if I can find him. That or I’ll just ask Alfred. He’ll know.”
Selina nodded. “Goodnight hon.”
“Night Selina.”
***The Next Day***
She stood in apprehension at the view of the manor; no matter how many times she’d been there, she was still shocked at the sheer size of it. She stepped up to the door and rang the doorbell, then turned and stared out at the long driveway, listening as the doorbell chimed.
The door opened and (Y/N) spun back around, expecting Alfred to be there. “Hey Alfred, is—Dick?” She stopped and stared at him. “Holy crap! Dick! I haven’t seen you in forever!” Dick smiled at her and opened his arms. (Y/N) leaned in and gave him a hug before pulling away. “What are you doing back in Gotham?”
Dick’s face dropped, and he stared at her. “Bruce needed my help.”
“Selina told me he’s been on edge for a while. It’s good that you’re here to keep him grounded.”
Dick nodded and motioned inside. “Want to come in?”
(Y/N) nodded and stepped by him. “This place gets even cooler every time I come over.”
He chuckled. “It does, doesn’t it?” They stepped into the kitchen and Dick went to the refrigerator. “Want something to drink?”
“Did Alfred make any fruit tea?”
“I think he made mango and peach tea.”
“I’ll take some of that.” He pulled out a pitcher and poured each of them a glass; he handed hers to her and she sipped it. “Alfred makes the best tea, I swear.”
Dick smiled and sat beside her, giving her a once over. “You look good, (Y/N).”
She was surprised at his comment and pointed to herself. “Me?”
“Yes (Y/N). You.” He snorted.
“Thank you, Dick.” She smiled. “Don’t ask me for a loan though, cause I ain’t givin’ you money.”
Dick laughed at her and shook his head. “I’m not going to ask you for a loan, (Y/N).”
“Good…‘cause I don’t have a lot of money.”
The two of them let out laughs, and Dick’s eyes caught the ring on her finger; he nodded at it. “Are you wearing a ring?”
(Y/N) glanced down at it, then back to him and nodded. “Jason gave it to me a few weeks ago.” She twirled it between her fingers, and she felt a smile form. “It’s a promise ring.” (Y/N) paused, then looked up at Dick. “Which brings me to the reason why I’m here…is Jason still in Ethiopia with his mom? He hasn’t messaged me yet, and I’m beginning to worry about him.”
Dick’s expression gave way from surprise to pure shock, and he leaned forward, his tone laced with disbelief. “…Have—have you not been told, (Y/N)?”
She blinked at him. “Told what?” Dick went silent, and (Y/N) cocked her head at him. “What haven’t I been told, Dick?”
He stared at her with a face that made her heart thump ominously and his voice held a tone of solemnity. “…Jason was killed in Ethiopia a few weeks ago.”
(Y/N) thought her heart stopped as she breathed out the only word she could manage. “…What?”
***Part Two***
Noise. Everything that came out of his mouth was pure noise. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think as she rose from the bar seat. Dick looked at her concerned and rose to follow her. “(Y/N)? Where are you going?” She didn’t respond, her feet carrying her towards the study; she entered the room and slid to the wall, moving the clock from its position. (Y/N) skipped the steps, moving as fast as she could into the cave.
She came upon him, standing in front of the Batcomputer talking to Alfred; he turned to her, and she let out a withering whisper. “Is it true?” His eyebrows furrowed and he opened his, but she cut him off, this time, her voice a screech. “IS IT TRUE?!”
He shut his mouth for a few seconds, then murmured, “…Yes he’s…gone.”
(Y/N) saw red and she flew forward, her fists pounding into his chest. “HOW COULD YOU NOT TELL ME! HOW COULD YOU KEEP THIS FROM ME!” Bruce didn’t respond, didn’t even react to her punches; he just took each blow. After a few seconds of continual punches, he reached out and grabbed her arms; (Y/N) struggled, thrashing against him. “Let go of me!”
He didn’t, instead he brought her forward and circled his arms around her; she struggled for a few moments, but then the realization set in, and she felt her knees weaken. They caved and she let him lower her down as she cried.
Her hands clenched in his suit, and she stared up at him, wailing, “What happened?”
Bruce’s eyes shut and he whispered, “Joker killed him in Ethiopia.” (Y/N)’s eyes momentarily widened, before shutting and she buried her face in his shoulder as she sobbed.
***
She cried for hours, and he sat with her on the floor of the cave the entire time; Alfred and Dick had gone upstairs earlier to give them privacy. (Y/N) didn’t feel like moving, didn’t feel like talking, but she forced herself to; she shifted her eyes to Bruce’s and whispered, “Why didn’t you tell me he di—why didn’t you tell me?”
He sighed and shook his head. “I didn’t know how to. I’ve been so occupied with Gotham that I didn’t have time.”
“Don’t give me that bullshit.” He looked down at her and she felt tears gather in her eyes again. “I deserved to know. I should’ve been the first person you told.”
Bruce looked away but nodded. “I know…I’m sorry, (Y/N).”
“How’d…how’d he die?”
There was a pause, then Bruce’s voice came out no higher than a broken whisper. “It was my fault…I wasn’t fast enough.”
“It wasn’t your fault, Bruce.”
“Yes, it was. I told him to wait but I should’ve known he would’ve gone to save her.”
(Y/N) glanced up at him at the mention of ‘her’. “Her? Who’s her?”
“Sheila Haywood. Jason’s mother.”
“So, he found her? Did he save her?”
Bruce let out a cold laugh that unsettled her. “He tried to…only to be betrayed by her and given to the Joker.” (Y/N)’s eyes widened, and he continued. “He beat Jason to a bloody pulp…then blew up the warehouse they were in.”
“He…killed them both?”
“Yes.”
She sucked in a breath, closing her eyes as the tears ran down her cheeks. “I thought he was still there…still spending time with her…I never imagined this would’ve happened.”
A comforting hand caressed the side of her head and Bruce apologized again. “I’m sorry, (Y/N)…I’m so sorry.” She said nothing and leaned her head onto his shoulder again and let the tears come.
***
The weeks after that were unimaginable, and (Y/N) couldn’t bear to bring herself to his grave. Too afraid that seeing it, would make it real. Make it true. But after wrestling with herself and telling herself that she owed it to him to go, she finally made her way over. Each step was heavy, and she found it increasingly hard to breathe as she walked; she stopped, a hand holding the cold iron. I can’t do this…I can’t…I’m not ready.
(Y/N) moved to turn when a hand rested on her shoulder; she looked up to see Dick smiling sadly down at her. “What are you doing here?”
“I knew at some point you’d go see him…I’ve been waiting to go with you.”
She reared back and glared. “How do you know I need someone to go with me?”
“Because you can’t even open the gate, (Y/N).”
She looked back to her hand, seeing it begin to turn a shade lighter from clenching so tightly; (Y/N) let out a shaky breath. “I need help, Dick. I’m…scared to go alone.”
“I’ll go with you.” He said, his hand shifting from her shoulder to her hand, and his fingers curled around it.
She glanced at him through the tears in her eyes. “You will?” He nodded and she stepped back, letting him open the gate.
Their steps were quiet as the moved through the cemetery, and eventually, her eyes landed on his headstone. (Y/N) pulled away from Dick and stumbled to the stone, dropping to her knees in front of it; her fingers rose shakily, and she placed a hand to it.
It was freezing, and it made her throat close as she traced the letters of his name. “I didn’t…I didn’t even get to say goodbye. The plane was boarding, and he could only wave as he ran to catch it.”
Dick knelt beside her and rested a hand on her back. “None of us did (Y/N).”
“I thought he was still in Ethiopia with his mom…” He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her to him; (Y/N) wrapped an arm under his and around his back, resting her head against his chest. “I don’t know what to do, Dick.” (Y/N) gazed at her hand to the silver band resting on her finger and choked out a sob. “What do I do now?” She stared up at him, hoping he had the answers, but all he did was close his eyes and shake his head.
“I…I don’t know, (Y/N).” he whispered.
Her eyes moved back to the stone, and she felt the tears run down her face. “This can’t be real…he can’t be gone.” (Y/N) sobbed, and the words poured from her mouth. “We were supposed to go to prom. We were supposed to graduate and go to college. Move in together and get…and get…” She couldn’t bring herself to say ‘married’, and she felt Dick’s arms tighten around her and his head dropped to her shoulder.
Soon, she felt the material of her jacket go damp and he whispered, “I wasn’t the brother I should’ve been for him. God, I was so angry at Bruce that I stayed away from Gotham, and I never got to know him well enough as I should’ve.”
(Y/N) pulled back to look at Dick, and she took one of his hands; he met her eyes and she murmured, “You were enough, Dick. He knew you cared for him.” He nodded, and (Y/N) rested her head back against his chest. After a few moments, she whispered, “I don’t know what to do anymore, Dick. I can’t even bring myself to leave my room most days let alone putting on my suit on anymore.”
“Why not?”
(Y/N) let her eyes trace his name and she confessed brokenly, “Because I can’t be Kit without my Robin.” She shut her eyes and brought a hand to her face and cried into it. Dick said nothing, he just held her as she broke down, and he let himself break down too.
***Five Years Later***
She gripped the handle of her whip and followed after Selina as she stepped into the jewelry store. Her eyes moved around the room, then went back to Selina who was busy cutting a hole in the glass case. “Selina…what are we doing?”
Selina snorted. “I believe we’re stealing this six-million-dollar diamond and ruby necklace, (Y/N).”
“No. I mean what are we doing, Selina.”
She stopped cutting and rose, arching an elegant brow at (Y/N). “Alright. You’ve been acting like this for a few weeks now. In fact, it’s been like this since you’ve put the suit back on.” She motioned to (Y/N). “What’s up with you?”
Taking a few breaths of courage, she removed her mask and stared at her mentor. “I’m not doing this anymore.”
“And what does that mean?”
(Y/N) loosened the whip at her side. “It means that you’re breaking the law, Selina. And it’s wrong.”
Selina huffed a laugh and turned back to the case, beginning to cut again. “You’re a little old to be playing Cops and Robbers, Kit.” The crack of her whip sounded, and she watched it curl around Selina’s wrist; her eyes turned back to (Y/N), gaping at her. “(Y/N)?”
(Y/N) narrowed her eyes. “I’m not letting you take this Selina. It’s wrong.” Selina huffed a cold laugh and gripped the whip in her hand, tugging it roughly; (Y/N) flew forward and she landed at her feet. She looked up and saw Selina picking up the necklace, then glance down at her.
“All these years I’ve taken care of you. All these years that I’ve trained you and this is how you give it back to me? By turning sides?” Selina scoffed. “You can get the hell out of my place and find your own.” (Y/N) scrambled to her feet beginning to give chase; she ran past the alarm and threw an arm out, slamming her hand down on the switch. Selina glanced over her shoulder. “You little bitch!”
“I’m going to be a bigger bitch when I take that necklace back from you Selina!” The two of them slammed through the doors on the roof, hands and feet flying.
They both fought and (Y/N) felt Selina’s claws dig into her shoulder. She let out a cry and slammed her palm up into Selina’s chin. The older woman fell backwards, and (Y/N) watched the necklace fly from her pouch. Their eyes met and each of them scrambled, trying to reach it first. (Y/N) gripped the bolas at her side and slung them as hard as she could. They caught Selina’s ankles, and she dropped; she slid to her feet and scooped up the necklace, and she didn’t look back as she ran, hopping ledges and rooftops, listening to Selina cuss at her the entire way.
(Y/N) ran for what seemed like hours, and once she made sure she was safe, she sat down on a rooftop and caught her breath. Her hand shifted to her pocket, and she looked at the necklace. I could sell this if I wanted to. (Y/N) shook her head and shoved the necklace back in her pocket. No. I made my choice. No more stealing. She sighed and turned back to go to Selina’s apartment when she remembered that she couldn’t go back there. So where to now? (Y/N) looked around when a building caught her eye. I can go to him…he’ll help me. She began running again, moving in the direction of the manor.
***
Bruce stood in front of the Batcomputer, moving through the cases when Tim walked up. “Bruce? Can I help you with anything?”
“No. Go see if Dick or Alfred need anything though.”
Tim nodded and began moving when a figure came into view. “Holy crap! Kit?!”
Immediately, everyone was facing the entrance of the cave and they watched as (Y/N) stepped closer; Bruce rose from his seat and moved in front of her, noticing she was out of her suit. “What are you doing here, (Y/N)?”
Her eyes moved from his to the Batcomputer and she nodded at it. “Selina got arrested then.”
“You knew?”
(Y/N) looked at him and stepped forward, moving her hand towards him to reveal the necklace. “I came to give this to you…to return it.”
Bruce took it, looking at her curiously and the others stepped towards her. “Why’d you turn on Selina?”
She took a deep breath and held out her suit, declaring, “I don’t want to be a criminal anymore. I’m tired of breaking the law and seeing other people get away with it.”
To say that they were surprised at her confession was an understatement; Dick tipped his head. “But…stealing is kind of your thing? Why don’t you want to do it anymore, (Y/N)?”
“Because it’s not what Jason would want me to keep doing.” (Y/N) looked at Bruce. “I’ll do whatever it takes to prove I’m ready to change but I don’t want to be a criminal. I want to be like you guys…” She swallowed thickly. “I want to be someone that would make Jason proud.”
They were silent for a moment, then Bruce took her suit from her and passed it to Alfred. “If you’re going to join us, you’ll need a new training regimen. We start at dawn.”
That was all he said before turning around, and (Y/N) called out to him. “By the way…Selina kicked me out. So…can I maybe stay here?” He waved a hand and (Y/N) let a smile grace her face.
“Welcome to the Batfamily (Y/N).”
(Y/N) glanced at Dick’s hand held outwards and she smiled, taking it firmly; he shifted and pulled her into a hug, listening as she giggled. “Thanks Dick.”
They pulled away and Bruce walked back over. “You need a new suit Kit. Yours is ripped.”
“Vixen.”
“Beg pardon?”
“Everyone has to grow up sometime. I’m not Kit anymore…I’m Vixen.”
Bruce eyed her before walking past her. “You prove to me that you can be like us, and you can be Vixen…until then you’re Kit.”
“Looks like you have a long road ahead of you (Y/N).” Dick remarked.
She nodded at him. “Right on.” She glanced over at Tim who was still wearing his suit. “Hey…Robin.” He turned to her, and his eyes flashed with fear as she stepped in front of him; (Y/N) pointed to the symbol. “Make sure you honor that uniform. Are we clear?” Tim nodded fervently and she reached up, ruffling his hair. “Good.” (Y/N) walked away and stopped at the stairs, glancing over her shoulder at him. “He’d be proud someone like you filled his shoes.”
“Are you okay with this, (Y/N)?”
Her eyes moved to Dick’s, and she nodded, her voice solemn. “Jason’s gone, Dick. I can’t change that.” (Y/N)’s hand rose to close around the ring on the chain at her neck. “But I can honor him by knowing that Tim’s doing a damn good job as Robin.” She began moving up the stairs and murmured, “And I know he’d be proud that I’m fighting crime instead of making it.”
***Part Three***
She hit the floor, listening as the sound echoed through the cave, and grunted, grabbing her side, the throbbing telling her she was going to see a black bruise soon. He shifted over and knelt beside her. “Are you alright?”
She nodded and clamored to her feet, assuming another defensive position. “Let’s go again.”
“This is the fifth time we’ve done this, (Y/N). Aren’t you tired yet?”
“Again.” She reiterated.
Bruce complied and entered an offensive stance. “Remember (Y/N), it’s not just about blocking each hit, it’s knowing what’s coming next.”
“Got it. Go.”
They circled each other for a few seconds, each of them wondering who was going to move first; Bruce shifted fast, and she readied herself for the coming blows. They came swiftly, and she reminded herself to focus on what he was going to do next. Who am I kidding? The man is unpredictable. (Y/N) kept up, and she saw him grin ever-so-slightly.
“Good. You’re keeping up well.” She blocked the palm he threw at her, returning it with a kick to his side, then backing up; he followed her. “Let’s see if you can go faster.”
“Wait don’t go faster! I’m barely keeping myself on track right now!” Bruce chuckled, but went faster anyway and (Y/N) found herself panicking as each fist came.
“Don’t panic, (Y/N). Focus.” She took a deep breath as she blocked his foot and he said, “When it comes down to a life-or-death fight, you need to be able to keep calm. If you let your enemy get the better of your fear and panic, it’s all over.”
“Is that how you felt when you fought Bane?”
He nodded. “I will admit, that was one of the most fearful moments of my entire life.”
“I imagine having your back broken is.” Bruce shifted again, and (Y/N) saw his foot fly. “Fuck.”
She saw it too late, and it hit her square in the chest; she dropped to the ground, the wind knocked from her lungs. (Y/N) put her hands to her chest and tried to breathe, but the air wouldn’t come in; her eyes widened in panic, and she looked up at Bruce who immediately moved to her side.
“(Y/N).” She motioned to her chest, and he placed his hands on her shoulders. “Just relax. The more you panic, the harder it will be for you to breathe.” She closed her eyes, forcing herself to calm down, then she inhaled deeply, feeling the breath expand in her deprived lungs. She let out a shaky breath and he asked, “Are you alright now?”
(Y/N) opened her eyes, and she jerked, elbow meeting his chest; Bruce’s eyes widened, and she shifted again, taking advantage of the opening he’d given her. The arm she’d hit him with came back and gripped one of his arms and she swung herself around it, placing her legs over his chest, as she pulled it back. Bruce’s back bent on the mat as he tried to move, but she tightened her grip on his arm and her legs, keeping him locked in place.
“Tap out.” He grunted and tried to move but couldn’t and she said again, this time firmer, “Tap. Out.” After a few seconds, she heard his free hand tapping the mat and she let go, rolling off. (Y/N) rose to her feet and crossed her arms, smiling triumphantly. “I win.”
Bruce climbed to his feet and stood in front of her, a hard look in his eyes. At first, (Y/N) began to panic at the look, then the corner of his mouth turned up and he passed her murmuring, “Good job.”
She turned around and watched his back in disbelief as he walked to the shower room and then turned to Dick who was walking over, a towel in his hand. “Did…did that just happen? Did he just give me approval?”
Dick snorted as he passed her the towel. “Don’t get used to it, ‘cause it probably won’t happen again for a long time.”
Tim walked up beside her as she laughed. “Here (Y/N). I got your water.”
She smiled as she took it from him. “Thanks kiddo.” (Y/N) drank from the bottle then glanced at Dick. “I thought you were supposed to be in Blüdhaven. Why are you here?”
“Bruce said there’s some new player in Gotham and I figured he could use a hand.”
“Yeah, that Red Hood guy.” She replied.
Dick raised an eyebrow. “You know him?”
“Hardly,” she scoffed. “Bruce hasn’t let Tim or me patrol since he’s come into town.”
“Is he that dangerous?” (Y/N) passed him and walked over to the Batcomputer, typing on it; a few seconds later, the image of eight decapitated heads appeared on the screen. “Holy shit.”
She nodded at his shock. “He’s effectively taken over the drug trade in Gotham City, and is waging a one-man-war on Black Mask.”
“Is he winning?”
“So far? It appears so.” She paused and clicked the mouse. “I can’t exactly condone his actions because he’s killing people, but he’s keeping the drugs away from children and schools, so I’m not overly angry with him.”
Dick hummed, glancing at Tim. “You doing good, Timmy?”
The young boy nodded with a smile. “(Y/N)’s been helping me a lot.”
“Shove off, Dick.” She muttered when she saw the look on his face.
He spluttered. “I didn’t say anything!”
“You were thinking it.” She moved towards the steps, climbing them towards the door.
Dick followed her. “Going to see Jason?”
(Y/N) nodded as they stepped into the study. “Didn’t get to see him last week because of exams.”
“How’d those go?”
She flashed a grin over her shoulder. “Passed with flying colors.”
Dick reached over and patted her head. “Good job, (Y/N).”
She swatted his hand but smiled nevertheless at his congratulations. “Thanks Dick.” He smiled as he watched her climb the stairs and move towards her room.
(Y/N) walked inside her room and closed the door, immediately stripping from the sweaty work-out clothes; she dropped them into her hamper and moved into the bathroom, stepping into the shower. Once she was finished, she pulled on her underclothes, then put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Her eyes drifted to the zip-up hoodie in her closet; she pulled it off the hanger and slipped it on. Even after so long, it still fit her; she could faintly smell the scent of his cologne in it and she sighed, closing the closet, and moving to the door. (Y/N) walked down the steps and to the garage, grabbing her keys as she walked by.
***
The drive to the cemetery didn’t take long, and she stepped across the grass, still covered with dew. She pulled out the bottle of water from her bag, along with the old rag she’d grabbed; she poured the water on the rag then ran it over the surface of the stone, cleaning away the dirt.
“Sorry I wasn’t here last week, Jay. I had exams that week and I was too busy cramming. Honestly, it feels like a shit excuse on my part, but I know you’d understand.” (Y/N) grinned. “I remember how well you did in school. Right next to me, you were the best there was.” She pulled the rag away and wrung it out, putting it away, then she placed the vase of flowers at it, shifting it into place.
“I should mention that I passed my exams with A’s. (Y/N) (L/N) is one step closer to graduating. To be honest, school sucks. My nights are much more fun.” She snorted and pulled a photo album from her bag. “Tim helped me put this together a few days ago. He likes photography a lot.” (Y/N) opened it and reclined against the headstone. “You’d like Tim, Jason. He’s a good kid…smart, God he’s smart. Probably smarter than all of us…even Bruce.” She flipped the pages. “This is an old picture…the first gala you ever dragged me to.”
(Y/N) snorted. “I kept stepping on your shoes when we danced, but you just smiled at me…here’s you and I at the fairgrounds. I remember you threw up on the teacups because you ate too much. Ugh, that was so gross. Hilarious, but gross. Here’s that photo of you, Dick, Roy, and I at the pool. The chicken fight was fun and watching you and Dick pout because Roy and I beat you both was even more so.” Her fingers moved the pages, and she came across one of them; they froze on it. “…This was the last photo you and I took together. The Christmas party Bruce threw the year before you died.” A sad smile crossed her face, and she flipped the page again. “For now, that’s all we have.”
She closed the book and turned to the stone. “But I’ll make sure to take more photos so I can show you. Something tells me that the family is going to get a lot bigger in the future.” (Y/N) rose from the ground and collected her things, then stood in front of the stone. All at once, she felt someone’s eyes on her and immediately, she turned and eyes darting around, but saw nothing. Confused and unnerved, she faced the stone again. “I’ll see you later, Jason. I love you.”
(Y/N) quickly walked to her car and climbed in, pulling away from the sidewalk; she picked up her phone and pushed a button, listening to it ring.
Hello?
“Hey Bruce.”
What’s wrong?
“I think someone was around Jason’s grave.”
There was silence on the line, then his voice came over low and quiet. Why do you say that?
“Because it felt like someone was watching me.”
You sure it wasn’t someone else visiting?
(Y/N) huffed a mirthless laugh. “Bruce, I was the only person in the cemetery.”
I’ll see about putting up a camera in the quadrant that Jason’s grave is in.
“Alright. Hey…about patrol tonight. Can—”
We’ll talk about it tonight.
“Okay.” (Y/N) hung up and continued her drive towards Gotham University.
***
She stood in front of the Batcomputer, watching Bruce type away. “Have you found anything else about him?”
“Not yet. Dick’s going with me tonight, so we’ll see what it brings.”
“About tonight…Bruce, I think you should let me patrol again.”
“No.”
She sighed and leaned against the panel. “C’mon, Bruce. You can’t beat this guy on your own, not even with Dick’s help.” (Y/N) reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Let me help you, Bruce. It’s what you’ve been training me to do.”
“She’s got a point Bruce.” They turned to see Dick walking towards them, already suited up. “(Y/N)’s been working her ass off to get back into the field. And after what we saw this morning, she’s damn sure earned it.”
(Y/N) turned back to Bruce who took in Dick’s words, then he rose from the chair and began walking off; she sighed and scratched the back of her head. “I swear it’s one step forwards and two steps back.”
“Don’t take it too personal (Y/N). He’s just worried about the new guy.”
Her response was cut off by Bruce who stepped up to her. He held out a black suit with silver streaks on it; she eyed it. “What’s this?”
“That’s your new suit…Vixen.”
(Y/N)’s eyes went wide, and she gaped at him. “Are you…are you serious right now?”
Bruce nodded. “Dick’s right. You’ve earned the name and right to start patrolling again.” He took in the joy on her face and thumped her forehead. “Go suit up. We leave in ten.”
She scrambled to the changing room and stripped her clothes, pulling on the new suit. It fit like a glove, and she admired the suit in the mirror. She pulled on the domino mask and walked back out to them.
Bruce handed her a grapple gun and motioned to a sleek-black bike. “New bike’s yours too.”
“Holy crap this is awesome!” she yelled, pulling him in for a hug.
“Are you done yet?” Bruce sighed, patting her head.
“Don’t be an ass, Bruce. Enjoy the moment.”
He let out a chuckle as she pulled away, then his tone dropped into a serious one. “Listen to me very carefully, I don’t want you engaging the Red Hood, understood?”
She tipped her head. “I get it, but why not?”
“He’s too dangerous and unpredictable. Leave him to Dick and me. You stick to South Gotham.”
(Y/N) nodded and made her way to her bike. “I’ll stay in contact. Good hunting boys.” She pulled off and drove down the ramps.
***
She stood along the ledge of the building, watching the city below her; the night hadn’t been busy, but it certainly stretched along. Her eyes followed the cars and pedestrians when a flash of red caught them. Holy shit! It’s him! He paused on a roof top, then kept moving; (Y/N) grabbed her gun and aimed it for the building he’d just left when she paused. Maybe I should call Bruce…I’ll just tail him for now and get Bruce information.
She nodded her head and fired, slinging to the other building. Her feet hit the top and she was thankful that her shoes muffled noise as she began running after him. Tailing him wasn’t so hard as he didn’t turn around; he obviously wasn’t expecting someone to follow him. (Y/N) followed him, then, she lost sight of him.
Dropping down into the alley she’d seen him drop into, she let out a ‘huh’ and looked around, whispering, “I don’t understand…he was just here?”
“You’re good, but you aren’t the best.” She spun around to see him standing in front of her; (Y/N) reacted, throwing a fist. He caught it, and she brought her knee up to his stomach; he must’ve been expecting it too because he blocked it with his palm. “Relax. I’m not going to hurt you.”
“Too bad pal. I’m on the job right now.” (Y/N) jerked her fist from his grasp and threw her other one.
He dodged each punch and kick she sent, and he sighed. “I’m not going to fight you.”
That made her pause and she stopped with her hands raised defensively. “And why not?”
“Because I don’t want to hurt you, Kit.”
Her eyes widened, then narrowed. “Look you’re obviously new in town, so I’ll give you this one for free. My name isn’t Kit anymore. It’s Vixen.”
He leaned against the wall, his arms crossing over his chest; he tipped his head back and flirted, “Vixen, huh? That referring to you growing out of Kit…or becoming a rather alluring seductress?”
(Y/N) uncurled the whip from her side. “Depends on who’s asking.” Whatever response he had was cut off as she cracked it towards him.
Quick as flash, and obviously well trained, Red Hood grabbed the whip and curled his arm around it, jerking it roughly. (Y/N) flew forward and he shifted, grabbing her wrists; he turned them around and her back hit the wall as he shoved her arms above her head. She thrashed until he murmured, “Stop moving.”
She yanked at his grip, then looked at his helmet; she spit at it. “Let me go you fucker.”
He chuckled at her. “Man, you’ve certainly grown a mouth.” He observed her. “Those were nice flowers you left.”
(Y/N) stilled at that and she stared wide-eyed at him. “…What?”
“A nice mix you had going. Forget-Me-Nots, that’s self-explanatory. Primroses for eternal love, Red Tulips for undying love, Rainflowers for atonement, and Sword Lilies for an August birthday.” (Y/N) felt the breath leave her lungs, and all she could do was stare, too stunned to speak. “You’re still holding onto him, aren’t you?”
Her eyes narrowed and she felt tears swim in her vision as she tugged at her arms. “You sonovabitch. You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“You’ve visited his grave every week for the past five years, always bringing the same blend of flowers, and the same rag to clean with.”
“So, you’ve been watching me?”
“For a while…I wanted to know if you cared.”
“…Why?” His hands shifted, taking both her wrists in one, and the other went behind his head and pushed the button. She watched the helmet unlock and he pulled it off, dropping it do their feet, then he pulled the domino mask from his eyes and gazed at her. (Y/N)’s jaw went slack, and she could barely breathe.
“Because I still care.”
She could barely get his name out. “…J-Jason?”
His free hand came up and cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing against her skin. “Hey (Y/N)…been a long time.”
Her heart slammed against her ribcage, and everything began to spin; the last thing she remembered was Jason calling out to her as she fell into darkness.
***Part Four***
Her eyelids peeled open, and she looked up at the ceiling blearily. Upon seeing that it wasn’t the ceiling in her room at Wayne Manor, shock registered in her brain, and she shifted to sit up.
A hand rested on her shoulder and gently pushed her back down as a low voice followed. “Don’t sit up too fast. You’ll make yourself sick.” She looked over to see him sitting there on the edge of the bed; his hand moved from her shoulder to the nightstand beside her. He passed her a warm cup, which she took lightly. “Here. You’re recovering from shock, something warm will help.”
She brought the cup to her lips, and the scent of freshly crushed peppermint leaves wafted up her nose. “Peppermint?”
“Peppermint reduces anxiety and makes you calm.” He nodded to it. “Drink.”
“Don’t be bossy…I’m doing it.” She took a few sips then handed it back to him; he took it from her and set it on the nightstand, then looked at his hands. There was silence around them, then she sat up, scooting closer to him. “It’s really you, isn’t it?” The silence he gave her made her heart wrench, and she reached out, curling her hand in his. “Jason?”
He finally looked at her, and she took in the sight of how clouded his teal eyes were. She rested a hand on his cheek, her thumb caressing under his eye. She stared at him, then whispered, “I don’t understand…how are you alive?”
Jason closed his eyes and shook his head murmuring, “I don’t know (Y/N). I remember everything coming back in the Lazarus Pit…but that’s about it.” She tightened her grip on his hand, feeling his thumb run across the back of hers. “I’ve been waiting for the chance to talk to you…but I didn’t know when to.”
“You could’ve talked to me at the cemetery.”
Jason snorted and glanced at her. “And send you into cardiac arrest where I was buried? No thanks.” (Y/N) felt the corners of her mouth rise and she leaned forward, pressing her forehead to his; they stared at each other for a few moments, then Jason reached forward and pulled her into his lap, burying his face in her shoulder. Her arms came up and wound around him, threading a hand in his hair.
“I’ve missed you, (Y/N).” he whispered, tightening his grip on her waist.
She nodded, resting her head on his shoulder. “I’ve missed you too, Jason. Everyday you’ve been gone.”
They stayed that way for a while, simply holding each other, remembering what they had. (Y/N) pulled away after some time and took his face in her hands, observing him. She could tell how much he’d changed since they last saw each other those five years ago; he’d grown, and not just in his body and facial features. (Y/N) had seen the videos of him fighting; he’d become more skillful at fighting, deadlier too. Whoever trained him after Bruce had honed his senses to a razor-sharp edge. But what stunned her the most were his eyes. When they were younger, his eyes were always bright and full of mirth, always willing to spark some type of trouble…but now? His eyes were dark and cloudy, haunted by his past, a stark contrast from what she remembered.
(Y/N) reached up and twirled a finger in the tuft of white hair at his head. “That’s new.”
He smiled and nodded. “Was like that when I woke up.”
“Jason…what are you doing?”
His eyebrows furrowed. “What do you mean?”
(Y/N) shifted, pulling herself from his grip and rising to stand in front of him. “You know exactly what I mean.” She gestured to his suit. “This Red Hood business? Fighting Bruce? The war on drugs against Black Mask?” she shook her head like she couldn’t understand any of it—and for the most part, she didn’t. “What are you doing?”
Jason stood from the bed and wandered over to a table, his back to her. “I’m doing what Bruce won’t.”
“And that is?”
His hands shifted to the guns on the table, and he picked up a rag, beginning to clean one. “Controlling crime.”
“You’re not controlling crime, Jason. You’re acting like a mob boss.”
He snorted and glanced over his shoulder. “Maybe, but it’s getting the job done.”
(Y/N) thought her head was going to explode, and she crossed the room to him, grabbing his arm and spinning him around to face her; she glowered at him. “You’re not ‘doing the job’, Jason! You’re killing people!”
He jerked his arm from her grip and leaned in, his voice harsh. “Bad people! I’m putting down dogs that deserve it!”
“It doesn’t matter what they deserve, Jason! It’s murder! We aren’t executioners!”
Jason stood back up to his full height, and she watched his eyes turn to slits as he murmured, “I thought you of all people would understand why I’m doing this.”
(Y/N) thought he’d slapped her with how disappointed he sounded, and her voice turned incredulous. “Are you shitting me right now?” She reached out, her pointer finger jamming into his chest. “Don’t you dare turn this on me.” (Y/N) shook her head. “I left Selina and joined Bruce because I didn’t want to be a criminal anymore. I wanted to be a better person in your memory.” She stared into his eyes and spit, “You know damn well I’d never condone this…not even for you.”
“So, you’re choosing him over me?”
“Oh, don’t even go there, Jason. It’s not like that and you know it. Bruce helped me turn over a new leaf. He’s helped me become who I am.” (Y/N) reached out and took his arm. “Come home, Jason. Bruce and I can help you.”
This time, he gripped the hand that held his arm and he yanked her off. “I don’t need his help. Not when he did this to me.”
“Are you…are you blaming Bruce for this?”
“Of course I am! He left me to die!” The sound of a palm against skin echoed in the room and Jason reached up, holding his throbbing cheek.
(Y/N) glared as she whispered frostily, “He didn’t leave you to die, Jason! He told you to wait until he got back! I will admit that he wasn’t fast enough to save you, but he didn’t do this!” She tugged her hand away from his grip. “You’ve done this all on your own.”
His Adam’s apple bobbe4d as he swallowed, and he huffed a mirthless laugh. “You’ve changed, (Y/N).” He passed by her, muttering as he did. “You act so high and mighty, but you forget that you used to be a criminal too.”
She looked at him through the mirror beside her and she murmured, “I think it’s you who’s changed.” He turned and met her eyes and she added, “My Jason knew the difference between right and wrong.”
Jason flashed her a smile that made her stomach curl and he declared, “I don’t know if you know this, (Y/N)? But your Jason died.”
(Y/N) swallowed thickly and turned around, meeting his gaze. They stared at each other, and she affirmed, “Yes…he has.” Her hand reached up tugged at the silver chain around her neck; she walked past him to the door but stopped beside him. (Y/N) took his hand and placed the necklace in his palm; he looked down at it, then back at her, his eyes widening, and she hissed, “You can take this back. I’d rather die than marry what you’ve become.”
Jason’s hand curled around the ring, and he narrowed his eyes in amusement. “Don’t know if you know this, doll…but dying isn’t all that hard to do.”
(Y/N) glared as she passed him to the door, slamming it on her way out.
***
She wondered aimlessly through the streets, not caring where she was headed. After a few hours, a beeping sounded from her wrist; she raised her wrist and pushed a button on it. “Hello?”
Bruce’s worried voice came over the comm. (Y/N)? Where are you?
She looked around, taking in the view of the bay. “At the docks.”
Stay there. I’m coming to get you.
The call ended and she collapsed onto the bench, staring out at the water. Her hand reached up to hold the ring that hung at her neck but clenched around nothing. (Y/N) glanced down, then remembered where it went; tears filled her eyes and she reached up, covering her eyes as she sobbed.
A few moments later, the sound of the Batmobile pulling up came behind her, and then, a hand rested on her shoulder. She looked up, blinking through the tears to see Bruce frowning at her. “Let’s get back to the cave (Y/N).” She nodded and he helped her stand, walking her to the passenger side; she slid in and buckled the seat belt, staring out the windshield as he climbed in the driver’s seat.
The city passed them in a blur, and soon, they were back in the cave; Bruce turned off the Batmobile and they sat in silence until she whispered, “I know who he is.”
Bruce was quiet a few moments, then he murmured, “…I know as well.”
(Y/N) turned to him. “Ra’s brought him back.”
“It was actually Talia. Ra’s apparently called him a curse set upon the world.”
She huffed a laugh, but it was anything but humorous. “Right about now, I’m not sure whether I should agree with Ra’s or not…I’m inclined to agree with him.”
“How did you find out?”
“I saw him from the ledge I was on. I tailed him to an alley, and when he showed his face, I passed out from the shock.” (Y/N) looked at him. “Woke up and we got into it about what he’s doing…I left.” She paused. “How’d you find out?”
He sighed and reclined against the headrest. “We fought after I found Onyx, he revealed himself and...”
“And?”
“And after testing the coffin and the blood samples he left…it’s him.”
(Y/N) snorted and shook her head. “I could’ve told you that.”
They lapsed into silence, then Bruce murmured, “You aren’t wearing the necklace.” (Y/N) rested a hand along the base of her throat then shifted, climbing out of the Batmobile; Bruce followed her.
They walked a few feet, stopping in front of Jason’s old suit; (Y/N) stared at it, then turned to Bruce. “We made that promise when we were young and naïve…but now?” She turned around and began walking away. “I don’t think there’s a place for him and I in this world anymore. Not like this there isn’t.”
***Part Five***
“Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?”
His hands halted at her question but continued a second later. “You being there will only make a distraction.”
“Maybe, but it might also make him give in easier.”
He clicked the utility belt around his waist and looked up at her. “He had his chance to surrender when you two were together, (Y/N). Now I’m putting my foot down.”
She watched him move past her towards the Batmobile, and she reached out, griping his bicep; his eyes met hers and she said, “Call me if it gets bad.”
“It won’t.”
“It will.” (Y/N) squeezed his arm firmly. “And when it happens, you’ll need me to talk to him. We both know I’m the only one who can even begin to reason with him.” He said nothing, and she let go, watching him climb into the Batmobile and speed off.
After a few moments, she walked over to the Batcomputer and sat down, hitting a few keys until the monitor displayed Bruce’s cowl camera; she watched the scenes play in front of her, the mess with Black Mask, up until Bruce leaving to go find Jason.
Footsteps sounded beside her, and she glanced up to see Alfred looking at the screen. “So Master Bruce is going after Master Jason?”
(Y/N) looked back at the screen and nodded. “Yes.”
“Hmm. And you stayed behind?”
She bit her lip, eying the screen. “…It’s not my place to get between them.”
“It’s not?” he almost sounded shocked at her admission.
“No. This is Bruce and Jason’s fight now. It’s dragged on long enough.”
Alfred watched her for a few moments before humming again. “Hmm. And here I thought Master Jason still held privilege in your heart Miss (Y/N). I must admit it is hard to see that you have moved on so soon.” It was all he said as he turned on his heel and crossed the cave floor, leaving (Y/N) with her thoughts.
She stared at the screen for a few seconds, taking in Alfred’s words before mumbling, “Ah fuck it.” She rose from the chair and made her way to the case where her suit was, reaching out and pulling it from its holds; she slipped it on and tightened the straps and belts, moving to her bike.
Alfred stood beside her, holding out her whip. “I do believe this is yours, Miss (Y/N).”
“Make sure to keep in radio contact with us…we might need you Alfie.” He nodded and saw her off.
***
(Y/N) arrived in the nick of time, seeing Jason and Bruce moving into fighting stances. She pulled out her grapple and swung up to the fire-escape, standing between them; they were shocked to see her there. “(Y/N)?”
She eyed Jason and squared her shoulders, her back to Bruce. “Enough Jason.”
He stood up straight and glowered at her. “Move (Y/N).”
“No.” she retorted; she wasn’t afraid of him. This was still her Jason. A little worn and little darker, and a lot more damaged, but still him. Still good.
“This doesn’t concern you. This is between me and him.”
(Y/N) shook her head and pointed between them. “This concerns me just as much as it concerns you, Jason.”
His response was cut off by Bruce who gripped her arm firmly. “You need to leave (Y/N).”
“I’m not going anywhere Bruce.” She looked between them. “I’m stopping this before it goes too far. Let this end so we can talk.”
Bruce squeezed her arm, his voice hardening. “Your place isn’t here right now, (Y/N).”
She gazed at him for a few moments, before jerking her arm back, this time turning her back to Jason, as if protecting him. “This is my place, Bruce. Right here. Between you,” She paused and glanced over her shoulder, catching Jason’s eyes. “And Jason.” His eyes widened ever-so-slightly, and she turned back to Bruce. “Fighting isn’t going to solve our problems. We’re all suffering from what happened in the past and what’s happening now. Stop this so we can help each other.”
Bruce went silent at her mini-speech, and she thought he was going to agree until he shook his head. “Jason plans on killing Joker…I’m stopping him tonight.”
Jason barked a laugh. “You can try and stop me.” The two of them shifted but stopped when the sound of a devastating explosion rocked the city, and an angry green light covered them; they all turned to the sight and Jason murmured, “That’s Blüdhaven.”
(Y/N) and Bruce’s eyes widened, and they both breathed in disbelief. “Dick?”
Jason chuckled at them. “My God…is Nightwing there? Imagine that. One son returns from the grave as another one enters it…what a fitting ending this has become.” Neither Bruce nor (Y/N) could form words as they watched in horror as the sister-city disintegrated before their eyes. “Good God, the ironies around. Here we are and you have to run to the site of an explosion to dig through the wreckage and find the body of your ‘Boy Sidekick.’ If he’s there, Bruce…you’re too late. Again.” Bruce shifted, starting towards Blüdhaven when a blast knocked him sideways. “No! You’re not leaving! Not now! Not this time!”
Bruce looked back at Jason, his voice and gaze pleading. “Jason. Please. I—”
Jason cut him off, his voice angry. “What! You ‘have to be sure?!’ Getting out of that alive would be one neat trick. It’d take a hell of a lot more than batarangs and a few escrima sticks to survive.” He paused, a smile playing at his lips. “If Ol’ Dickie is there. He’s dead. And if you leave…someone else dies tonight.”
(Y/N) shook herself out of her stupor and put a finger to her ear. “Alfred! Can you read me?”
“Yes Miss (Y/N). What’s wrong?”
“A nuclear bomb was just set off in Blüdhaven.”
“My God…Master Dick—”
“Send the Batplane to my location.”
She felt an arm curl around her bicep, and she glanced up at Bruce. “(Y/N) the Batplane wasn’t made to withstand such high levels of radiation. You’ll die if you’re exposed too much.”
Pulling her arm from his grasp, she began walking towards the ledge. “Alfred send the Batplane. Now.” She heard Alfred give her confirmation that it was on its way, and she turned to Bruce. “I’ll go find Dick…you end this here. Tonight.” Her eyes passed over Jason who wore a dark expression and the sound of the Batplane echoed in the sky.
She climbed in and spared them one last look before turning the Batplane away and flying towards Blüdhaven. She pushed buttons on the screen and talked to Alfred. “Alfred, scan for the tracker in Dick’s suit.”
“At once Miss (Y/N).” There was silence for a few moments then he came back over the comm. “I’ve got a location Miss (Y/N). But it isn’t the exact. Too much radiation interfering with the radar.”
“I’ll find him Alfred. Just upload his suit vitals into the system.” The sound of tapping came over and then a blinking line shot across the screen. “Alfred, how insulated is my suit to radiation?”
“As best as it can, be Miss (Y/N). Though with the lower half of your face exposed, you’re risking high exposure to the radiation, you’d be overcome with radiation sickness within the hour.”
“Does Bruce have any type of mask I can wear?”
“Check the bin beside you. There might be one.”
(Y/N) pressed a button, halting the Batplane and reached over, searching the bin; she pulled out a mask and fit it around her face, pushing the button on the side that sealed it. “Alright. I’m good.”
“Master Dick is in the outskirts of the city. Hurry Miss (Y/N)…too much exposure will kill him.”
(Y/N) disengaged the lock and began scanning the perimeter of the city for him. It took her about thirty minutes to find him, and when she did, she saw the radiation already beginning to affect him; she lowered the Batplane to the ground and ran out, crossing the street laden with debris until she got to him.
“Dick!” He turned in the direction of her voice, but she could tell he was disoriented; he staggered towards her, falling to his knees just as she reached him. (Y/N) caught his upper body before he fell over and she wrapped an arm under his and across his back, heaving him to his feet. “It’s alright, Dick. I’ve got you.”
He moaned trying to find his feet, and she began pulling him towards the Batplane. “Need…to check…for survivors.”
(Y/N) shook her head at him, heaving him closer. “We can’t do anything right now, Dick. We need to get out of here.”
“But…the survivors—”
“Dick. We can’t save them. I have to get you out of here before the radiation makes you sicker.” He relented his fight and allowed her to carry him to the plane; (Y/N) got him into a seat and strapped in, handing him a bag. “You’ll probably be sick for a while, so try to throw up in the bag.” He nodded weakly and she sat in the seat, then the Batplane rose and made its way back to Gotham. “Alfred, I’ve got Dick. Get some KI ready for him to take when we get back to the cave.”
“Shall I update Master Bruce?”
“Just tell him I got Dick and that he’s okay.”
“I will. Hurry back.”
“Will do.” The comm went silent and she glanced over her shoulder at Dick. “Dickie? You good?”
He was moaning lowly, but moved a few fingers, telling her he was. “…Where’s…Bruce?”
She felt her heart tighten, but she pushed it aside. “Fighting Red Hood.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
“You…should’ve….stayed.”
“Stop talking Dick.”
“…M’kay.”
***
The rest of the ride was silent, and when she returned to the cave, Alfred was waiting for her with a gurney. They got Dick on it and wheeled him to the med-room in the cave; they rolled him onto the bed and (Y/N) gripped the zipper at his neck, pulling it down. Alfred helped her pull his suit off, and soon, Dick was asleep in the bed, the two of them resting in the chairs beside him.
“How did you find Master Dick?”
(Y/N) watched Dick’s chest rise and fall with each breath and she murmured, “Dick’s always put the safety of others above himself.” She glanced at Alfred. “I knew he’d try to help survivors in the area.” She rose from the seat and rested a hand on Alfred’s shoulder. “I need to go find Bruce. You look after Dick.”
He nodded and she left the cave, climbing back into the Batplane and taking off.
***
She scoured the city until she caught Bruce’s signal; she tapped a few buttons, connecting into the comm. “Bruce?”
(Y/N). Is Dick—
“He’s fine, Bruce. I got him back to the cave.”
There was a pause, then Bruce’s voice came over relived. Good.
“Where are you?”
Delivering Joker to the Asylum.
“And Jason?”
Gone.
She paused, inhaling shakily before murmuring, “I’ll find him…you go back to the cave and see Dick.”
Are you sure?
“I need to do this Bruce. Let me.”
Be careful, (Y/N).
“Jason would never hurt me, Bruce. You don’t have to worry about me.”
…I always worry about you all.
The corners of her mouth rose, and she quipped, “Yeah, we know.” The comm went dead and she turned the Batplane in the direction of Jason’s apartment. She landed on the opposite roof and swung over, lifting a window, and slipping in.
(Y/N) crept across the floor, taking in the view of the small blood puddles on the ground. She followed them into the bedroom and saw him resting on the bed, a blood-soaked towel held to his neck; he was sweating and letting out low groans. (Y/N) walked towards him and reached out, her hand covering the one that held the towel.
His eyes snapped open at the touch and his other hand came up defensively; she caught it and his eyes widened at the sight of her. “…(Y/N)?”
She sat on the edge of the bed and leaned over, pressing the towel harder to him. “Where’s your first-aid kit?”
He nodded towards the bathroom. “Under…the sink.”
(Y/N) nodded and rose, moving into the bathroom; she returned a few minutes later holding the kit and a bottle of alcohol. She took her seat back on the bed and moved his hand, pulling the towel from its position; she worked quickly, running the alcohol over it, and murmuring a soft “sorry” as he hissed in pain. (Y/N) dabbed the wound before pulling a needle and thread, suturing his wound.
After a few minutes, she pulled the knot and clipped the leftover string, running a pad of alcohol over it once more. She put everything away and found some washcloths, dampening one; then, she moved back to him and wiped away the sweat from his upper body before running the dry one over him, collecting the moisture.
(Y/N) could feel his gaze on her the entire time, but she refused to make eye-contact, instead murmuring, “Feel any better?”
He was silent a few moments, then he mumbled, “…Yeah.”
(Y/N) wiped her hands on the towel and rested them on the nightstand; she cleared her throat and moved to stand. “Then since you’re fine, I’ll leave.” She got to her feet when a hand curled around her fingers, and she looked down at him.
His eyes no longer held the fury they’d held earlier, instead, they begged for help. “Stay with me, (Y/N).”
She swallowed and shook her head. “I don’t think it’s a good idea for me to stay here, Jason.” She started to pull away, but the hand tightened.
“Please don’t leave me, (Y/N).” he plead, and she met his eyes, shocked to see tears forming in them. “Please don’t leave me alone again.”
“Jason, I—”
“I need you…please.”
She stared at him for a few moments before nodding. “…Okay…I’ll stay.” (Y/N) moved, climbing onto the bed beside him; she rested her head on his chest, feeling his arm curl around her waist. “…You know he loves you…don’t you?” Jason didn’t say anything, she knew he wasn’t going to immediately, so she did. “There isn’t a day that goes by that he doesn’t think about you…that he doesn’t think about how he failed you…that he was responsible for you.” She paused. “You claim he loved you like a son and left you…”
(Y/N) inhaled and lifted her head, locking eyes with him and she declared, “But you were—you are his son, Jason. And he loves you more than life itself.”
He swallowed thickly, and she watched him raise his hand to his eyes; his face morphed in agony and (Y/N) listened as he sobbed. She shifted, crawling up the bed and pulling him to her; his face buried in her chest and his arms wound around her waist, holding her. She raised a hand and gently ran her fingers through his hair, comforting him.
***
After an hour or so, they were still lying in the bed, Jason resting his weight on (Y/N) as she sat against the headboard. Her fingers still ran through his hair, sometimes lightly scratching his scalp, like she remembered he loved, and her other hand rested on his shoulder, gently massaging. They said nothing, just entranced in each other, until Jason broke it, whispering, “…I’m sorry, (Y/N).”
She took a deep breath and nodded. “I am too, Jason.”
He tilted his head up, giving her a stunned look. “For what?”
“I turned my back on you…when I should’ve been there to help you.” She paused, looking at him. “I was wrong to damn you without trying to understand what you were doing, and why.”
He swallowed, nodding his head to her words; his gaze drifted to her eyes, and he mumbled, “I never meant to disappoint you.”
(Y/N) stared into his teal eyes, and raised a hand, gently brushing the hair away from the tips of his cheekbones, setting it behind his ear. “Neither did I.”
Jason swallowed and raised his weight on his forearms, crawling up her body. “I never wanted to be at odds with you...I wanted to explain everything to you…but I was scared of your reaction.” His face was in front of hers now.
She sighed, nodding, “I know.”
He went quiet for a moment, then reached out and cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing along it. “I still love you…and I want you beside me.” (Y/N) met his eyes, watching as he leaned forward, pressing his forehead to hers. “Will you come with me?”
“Where?”
“Anywhere. Everywhere. Somewhere far away from Gotham.” He paused, a hopeful look in his eyes. “Come with me, (Y/N)…we can go anywhere we want.” Her hands came up and rested along his shoulders, gently pushing him away. His face twisted and he sat back, watching her rise too.
(Y/N) took his hands, brushing her thumbs along the backs of them; she met his gaze and she spoke firmly. “I’ll go with you.” His eyes widened and his face began to turn joyful until she said, “But you have to do something for me.”
“What?”
“A lot of the unnecessary killing has to stop.” His eyebrows furrowed and she squeezed his hands. “If you want me to come with you? To stay with you and to be with you? You’ve got to try.” (Y/N) pulled her hands back and sat up straight. “Jason, I know you do what you do because you think it’s right. And while I understand that there are some people who don’t deserve to breathe? They’re still human beings. Rapists and murderers, I can get behind your guns. But the petty drug dealers and small-time criminals? Jason, they aren’t worth the bullets you’d spend.”
He observed her for a few moments before reaching past her, opening the nightstand, and pulling something out; his hand was clenched and he spoke quietly, “When I first gave this to you, we were fifteen…we had our whole lives ahead of us. And when I was gone, you never stopped holding on.” He looked at her and said, “That kind of love isn’t something that just dies, (Y/N).”
His hand uncurled and the saw the familiar ring in his open palm. “When you gave this back to me…I was devastated. But…I think it started to open my eyes about us. And I think as long as you’re with me, I can get through anything.” He held out his palm again. “If I ask you again, will you accept?”
“Will try to honor my side of the arrangement?”
“I’ll…try to...I can’t make a promise to it though.”
(Y/N) nodded. “The fact that you’ll try is good enough for me.”
He took her hand and held the ring. “(Y/N) (L/N)…will you marry me?” Tears welled up in her eyes and she nodded silently, too choked up to make words; Jason slid the ring on her finger and held her hand, his thumb rubbing the back of it. (Y/N) leaned forward and Jason pulled her into his lap, holding her to him. “I love you, (Y/N).”
“I love you too, Jason.” she whispered against his shoulder.
After a few minutes, she mumbled against his shoulder; Jason chuckled. “(Y/N), I can’t hear you clearly.”
She pulled back, giving him a smile. “I want to get married in Switzerland.”
“Why Switzerland?”
“So, I can shove you into the snow after you kiss me.” The two of them laughed and Jason shifted, wrapping an arm around her waist; her arms wound around his neck, and he gently lowered her back against the bed. They stared at each other until (Y/N)’s eyes darted to the side. “So…are you going to kiss me? Or are you gonna keep staring at me like a weirdo?”
He snorted at her question and shifted a hand, tracing her cheek. “Just thinking about how pretty you are, doll.”
(Y/N) raised an eyebrow. “When did you start calling people doll?”
“Kinda just caught on.” He shrugged.
“Mhm.”
The two of them laughed again, then Jason admitted, “I don’t know if I can be the man you deserve, (Y/N).”
She shook her head, threading her fingers in his hair as she said, “You are already more than enough for me, Jason…if anything, I’m not sure if I’m the one who’s deserving of you.”
“Will you stay with me?”
(Y/N) leaned up, pressing a kiss to his lips, and whispered, “Now and forever.”
Continued from this I just got tired of doing reblogs
And back to Detective Comics 526. 500th appearance of Batman! …in Detective Comics only, but hey. Any excuse to celebrate, right? That does mean I suspect there’ll be a lack of Jason yet again.
Is that Talia? She looks so good in pink
Love Riddler and Catman just chilling on the floor. Very “on a field trip waiting for the bus” vibes.
Awwww I like her crossbow. But yeah I love pre-morrison Talia.
Mails this panel to Morrison. Also this has become a Talia love post, no more Jason, sorry!
Practicing for when he adopts Jason and Dick I see….
So yeah, Joker calls all the villains together to stop Croc from killing the Batman (so they can do it), Talia and Catwoman go against it because the Joker still invited them, because he doesn’t get any Bitches and assumes that Batman is the same way. I am still wondering why there’s so little Jason in this but for now I am quenched by seeing Talia.
Babs and Dick meet up to talk, Babs reveals she knows their identities, and Bruce and his girls go to find the villains hideout; There’s some nice moments of everyone squabbling, it’s also fun to see villains fight with each other in my opinion, especially over stupid shit.
After a short fight, we cut back to Jason, who FINALLY gets a scene where he actually does something.
That something is find the batcave.
Seriously, guys. Locks? Have you heard of them? At least Jason being nosy is pretty consistent.
Bruce keeping his costumes on a normal hanger instead of those fancy cases is EXTREMELY funny to me. I know times change but it's just. On there like a normal sweater.
If you don’t want her then move outta the way, batboy, cuz Im gonna get me some batpussy--
And then years later, Damian would behead this poor guy…..
We make fun of condiment man, kite man, calendar man… but what about signalman?????
Gordons being pretty harsh but… he is kinda right. Also, I’ve seen what a croc can do to a person, those bones should be picked clean and scattered because of how they eat.
(...I studied death and decomp in University)
That is not how you use a gun, Dick! But yeah he’s pretty torn up over their death.
Jason continues to be nosy and finds some of Dick’s old costumes; I do wonder if they were going to go with this design and people didn’t like it, or if he was always supposed to receive the classic one later.
Jason reverse kidnaps himself, while Bruce does something to figure out a map they were given without street names, a problem you definitely would not need to go all the way home for nowadays.
This guy is cool, they should use him more. Gentleman Ghost is a great name. Anyways, Talia, Selina, and Bruce get captured, so it’s up to Jason as Robin to save them! Pretty standard fare, and more in-fighting from the villains, with the Joker playing both sides as he often does.
Yeah, get it right Croc! That’s Ducard and his daughter’s name!!
They sure call the joker harlequin a lot; obvs never do nowadays because of Harley. Interesting.
Poor Jay ):
*is hold*
Also they started giving Jason his lil curly bangs. No more bowl cut for him, he’s a real teenager now! Also either Jason is a really tall 12 year old, or Dick is short as hell.
Again, Talia looks so good in pink. Also she has an actual different skin tone from Selina and Bruce, something they struggle with these days.
It;s very unlikely they woulda let Dick adopt Jason, but I do sometimes wonder what things woulda been like had they…
Huh, so Jason did (potentially, he could be joking) take Dick’s old room, like in RHATO… which is silly, because it’s a mansion, he can have a different room.
And that’s it! For an opening arc about Jason becoming Robin… well, it’s really only half that; there’s a bigger focus on Croc, honestly, and Jason’s parents than Jason himself, so we end up not learning much about him. I definitely think Tim’s intro and first outing as Robin is much stronger, or even Jason’s later intro. But overall it wasn’t a bad read, just a little unfocused at times.
SO, A small collection of facts from this arc and two other issues:
Batman 357
-Waldo the clown - knows Dick from Haley’s circus, good with kids.
-Dick makes mention of Cleveland Brand, twin brother of Deadman Boston Brand
-before meeting Jason, bruce took down a spy ring run by ‘The Squid’ and a drug ring run by mobster Tony Falco
Detective Comics 524
-Trina and Joseph are the original names of Catherine and Willis, Jason’s parents. Could reuse for grandparent names or middle names.
-Leslie Thompson didn’t exist yet, so they mention Doctor Dundee, an old friend of Thomas Wayne, who helps with Bruce’s injuries
-Bruce was seeing Vicki Vale at the time
-The Gotham River Aquarium is established--it was built in the 1930s and used to be rather popular, but these days is used more for gimmicky villains to hide out in.
-Killer Croc is much more intelligent than he’s usually portrayed, being much less monstrous and even shown using a sniper rifle and using it well. He also looks like Mr. X from the Resident Evil 2 remake.
Batman 358
-Trina calls Bruce ‘dick’s friend’ and dick says she reminds him of his mom
-Trina said she looked up to Dick’s parents ‘as a girl’ and how their deaths affected her, establishing it's definitely been a few years since they died (though likely they died when she was an adult)
-Dick and Bruce are beginning to drift apart, according to dick; Dick is resentful that Bruce has trust issues from Selina and Vicki betraying him, while Bruce struggles to understand why Dick allows himself to get close to people.
-An area of Gotham known as “The Point” is said to be their version of the South Bronx (in the 80s anyways)--troubled and poor.
-Hell’s Point is a location in Gotham, in the far north by “the point”. It gets its name from the currents created by two rivers that converge into the sea to the south. At the time, no one lived there but Croc
Detective Comics 525
-bruce is struggling with his feelings over selina, and vicki at this time
-Jason is originally 12 when he becomes robin
-the sloan circus is said to be set up on the palisade cliffs by the hudson river, putting gotham likely in New Jersey (though NY has some of the cliffs too)
-Upon meeting Robin, Jason asks what wonder girl is like and Dick says Jason has ‘good taste’ LMAO
Batman 359
-Gotham city zoo exists and also is a great place for u and your mob pals to hang out! Is there no security in gotham?
-dick says “lately he’s been like a stranger” when bruce takes his anger out on dick, something bruce regrets; bruce also expresses frustration that normal citizens seem to expect them to deal with everything and wishes more would stand up to villains
-mayor is mayor hill at the time
-Dick calls Jason ‘jase’
Detective comics 526:
-talia says bruce is the one man she won’t go against
-Babs knows who Batman and Robin are by this point--she just didnt let them know she knew
-jason finds the batcave because he’s nosy
-jason describes himself as a ‘nervy kid, but not stupid’
-more gotham lore: they used to have 7 breweries with their own local brands, but most went out of business by the 80s
-addams brewery mentioned, est 1892
-before harley, people called the joker ‘harlequin’ often
-initially, Dick wants to adopt Jason, as he’s about 18 and feels he owes it to the kid
Young justice 44
-jason is 18 in this
-jason dates anita fite
-jason wears a cross that he made himself, and made one for anita
Detective Comics 790
-jason turns 18 after cassandra turns 18, in 2004 (when published)
Such a Joker (50)
Part 49 Here
~o0o~
Jim POV:
As I come out of my office I see a large number of cops watching Jeremiah sitting calming in the holding cell. "Don't you all have work you should be doing?" I yell towards them as they scatter.
"Pardon me, Jim."
I walk over to Jeremiah raising my brows. "What is it?" "I'd like to press charges against Bruce Wayne's butler. I mean, just look at my face. I can't have my wife seeing me like this."
I scoff smirking with pure anger, "I think you look great."
"And I'd like to speak to Bruce again. We couldn't really talk before what with his girlfriend bleeding out all over him."
"You tried to prove you're better than your brother. But I'm still here. I'm searching for (Y/n), and the city's still here. You're a failure, Jeremiah. Enjoy Arkham. Your brother did. I'll be the one to make sure (Y/n)'s visiting hours will be less than none."
"Bring me, Bruce Wayne... I'll let you speak with (y/n), and I'll tell you where the other bombs are." I walk closer engaging. "We have all your bombs."
Jeremiah nods with an underlying smirk, "The maze bombs, yes. I mean the other ones. Jim, as an engineer, you expect systems to fail. So, you build in redundancies. And I am a very good engineer."
"You're bluffing."
"Am I?" He smirks at me waiting for a reaction.
"You're right, you know. I did fail. I didn't yet understand the vision I was servicing, but, I do now. My eyes are open as will yours be. When you realize I'm not bluffing, bring me, Bruce Wayne. And I'd like a coffee. Black. Two sugars."
~
"How many bombs are there? Where are they?" I challenge him again. "I want to talk to Bruce Wayne."
"Tell me where they are, you son of a bitch. Who's helping you?"
"Bruce Wayne."
I grunt, shaking my head in frustration, "You are never gonna talk to Bruce Wayne. You hear me?"
Jeremiah shrugs smirking, "Then more people will die and you will never see (Y/n) or meet your grandchildren." I look up meeting his icy eyes with cold blood. "What? You're lying." Jeremiah sighs, "My wallet, right sleeve, forth slot, a sonogram photo of my two twins. I don't bluff, Jim. Why do you think I ask for your blessing? Wouldn't want your daughter unwed and knocked up, huh? But once again you resented her happiness, and she ran right into my arms. You never were good at holding on to what you care about, were you, James?"
~
Bruce finally walks in as I'm strapped to the dolly awaiting transportation to Arkham. "Hello, Bruce. It's great to see you."
"Where are the bombs, Jeremiah? Where is (Y/n) Gordon?"
"Closer, please."
As Bruce teds near I speak again. "Tell me. How is the young lady doing?" Of course no reaction. I smile switching subjects, "You know why we're destined to be best friends? Because we're very much alike. You are as I used to be. At war with your true nature. You must truly embrace it if you ever want to be free. I'm just trying to help you."
"Trying to help me? By torturing Alfred? Trying to destroy Gotham?
By shooting Selina? You think we're alike because there's a darkness inside both of us. But the difference is, I know how to control mine."
I scoff smirking, "I think you could be so strong. I see it. He sees it too." Bruce looks at me confused walking closer. "What do you mean, "he"?"
"Where are the other bombs?"
I roll my eyes looking up at the camera playing the game, "What bombs?" "Bombs you planted around the city. You blew up the Mayor."
"Ah, that bomb. Yes, that was the only one. But it did what it had to do. It got you here."
"You said, "he." Who do you mean?"
I smile gasping at Bruce. "The one who opened up my eyes. Who showed me that everything I was doing, was not to create a Gotham of my own for (y/n), and I, But yours, Bruce. The Gotham you need. Your dark island. And it will come to be, Bruce. Tonight."
"Tell me his name," Bruce demands empty-handed.
"What did the doctors say? Will the little bitch ever walk again? What vertebrae did I sever? I was hoping for the lumbar..." "TELL ME HIS NAME!" I laugh at his anger. "You already know his name. You're his heir."
Bruce gasps letting my suit wings go. "Ra's al Ghul... No, it can't..."
"Shh." The lights flicker as the room goes dark and I am freed from this hold.
~
Enter the building I see (Y/n) waiting with Ra's, overlooking the old city. "Jeremiah! Ra's was just telling me he could marry us!" I grin walking over as the men get Bruce ready for the arrival.
"Could you?" Ra's nods smirking, "Just say when my boy. I can-" "Now." I pull out two solid gold bands passing mine to (Y/n). "You're prepared." She giggles. "I've been waiting."
Ra's chuckles offering off a quick blessing to us as a couple. "Do you Jeremiah Valeska take (Y/n) Gordon as your lawfully wedded wife?" "I certainly do." I grin watching my love. "And do you, (Y/n)-" "Yes." Ra's gestures between us chuckling. "Wonderful, you may kiss your bride, Mr. Valeska."
I scoop her in my arms kissing her deeply. I pull away as the men waltz a masked Bruce into the room. "Ah, hate you missed the ceremony, friend." I walk over pulling the bag off of his head.
"How did you two..." "Find each other?" Ra's finishes, "I'd like to think it was you, Bruce. You brought us together."
Ra's turns to me and (Y/n) as we look at the city. "I trust things went smoothly?" "Like clockwork. Did your men retrieve my bombs?" "They are en route to their positions as we speak. From here, we can take in the full majesty of Gotham's destruction."
"You're both insane!"
Ra's shakes his head in disappointment, "I know it's difficult to fathom, Bruce. But Jeremiah and I are doing this for your benefit."
"How is destroying Gotham supposed to help me?"
"Because I had a vision. That out of this crucible of blood and fire will rise the Dark Knight that your city needs. That I need."
I scoff pulling away from (y/n) and joining Bruce and Ra's. "To be honest, Bruce. Prophecies, visions. Not really my cup of tea. But our friend revealed something to me. That my twin obsessions, rebuilding Gotham and rebuilding you, are one and the same. You're the brother I never had. The one Jerome never could be. We will create a legacy in this city. Gotham falls. We rise. Together."
Barbara walks in passing each of us towards Ra's. "Oh, hey, Bruce. Freak. (Y/n), looking beautiful!"
"Hello, Barbara. I'm really glad you came." She sighs shrugging. "Bad news, baby. I'm not leaving. Gotham's in my blood. And I don't think I can let you leave either. You see, you say you're leaving. But I've got a feeling you're gonna be back. And I don't like looking over my shoulder."
"Need I remind you, Barbara. You've already tried using that knife. And also, you're outnumbered."
She hums smiling "Hmm. That Demon's Head is really not working out for you, huh?" Suddenly Oswald yells striking us and the fight breaks out quickly.
Tabith tackles me to the ground as I search for (Y/n) in a blind panic. She holds her knife to my neck sneering, "So you know, this is for Selina." I flip her overtaking the blade from her and pressing it to her skin. "In that case, it must be very disappointing for you to be dying like this." She smirks and moves her arm. "I'm not talking about you." She pulls her trigger making me search where the bullet traveled.
The bombs go off destroying the city as my wife falls bleeding from the bullet that pierced her. "No!" I growl rushing over. She cries holding her chest. "Jer-" "No, no, don't speak. You're going to be fine." The city burns down as my love's life source lowers.
"You're going to be fine, love. We're all going to be safe. Tomorrow is a new day,"
~
Staying by her bedside the entire night as the doctors work to remove the bullet, and stabilize her and the babies. "She should wake soon, Sir. The children are healthy. She's lucky it wasn't any closer to her heart." I nod boring my eyes into her face.
"Thank you, Doctor."
(y/n) mumbles and opens her eyes slowly. I smile leaning over, "Rise and shine, beautiful." She looks up at me confused, then looks down at her chest gasping, "That bitch." she sneers growling and trying to sit up. "No, no, don't try that." She gasps, putting a hand on her belly. "Jer-" "They're alright, doll. You're very lucky. All four of us are."
She looks over to me putting a hand on my cheek. "What do we do now, Jeremiah?" I smile rubbing my hands on her stomach. "Now, my love, we enjoy our marriage, and wait for our children." Her cheeks glow as I speak of our children. "I love you, Jeremiah." "I love you too, Mrs. Valeska. Always."
~ Day 87~
I sit at the radio discussing yet another call on the state of Gotham to the officials over the bridge. "Your people have decided to ignore evacuation orders." "No, no, no, no. It is clear you don't understand." "What's to understand, Mr. Gordon? I'm afraid you're making your-" "For the last time... after the bridges blew and the government declared Gotham off-limits, the city was up for grabs. Given over to criminals and murderers. New territory is controlled by whoever has enough power to hold it. I mean, we have Penguins in City Hall, for God's sake. Barbara and the Sirens control an area around their club. It's the only place in Gotham not suffering for food or booze. Barabra trades mostly for information. It's women only, but men can buy windows of time. To the west Jonathan Crane, the Scarecrow. Victor Freeze is further north warring with Firefly. And to date, there have been no confirmed sightings of Jeremiah Valeska, or my Daughter, (y/n). Then there is us. The GCPD controls a ten-block area around the precinct, where we feed and protect 150 civilians. That number could grow as who knows how many others are trapped around the city. These are innocent people who couldn't get out. The Government has a duty to protect them. You have a duty to help them." I finish waiting for the response.
"We've been over this time and time again. No one is allowed in or out of Gotham."
"People we are protecting are not criminals." "And anyone who stayed after the evacuation order is no longer the government's responsibility." "We're surrounded by hostile forces. We are running out of food, ammunition. There are children here. You need to evacuate them." "A committee is being formed regarding the situation in Gotham."
I huff shaking my head. "At least let us resupply ourselves."
"We understand the situation."
"You DON'T understand. If you did you would do something. Just say we're on our own." The radio waves stay silent as no response comes through. I nod gruffly and turn off the communication.
I look to the corner of the desk seeing a photo of (Y/n), along with the photo of the unborn twins. I sigh holding them to my heart. "Please be okay."
~
"I like Jeremy," Jeremiah says as we relax on the couch together. "And for a girl?" He hums thinking. "What if we stuck with the J name? I kinda like Juliet." Jeremiah looks at me smiling. "I think that's lovely."
I stroke my small belly with love. "I just want them here already." Jeremiah laughs kissing the top of my head. "They'll be perfect."
~
Months pass of us hiding, gaining followers, and then finally start to dig under the city for our escape. Fully 6 months pregnant and things are just seeming harder. "You're sad," Ecco says frowning. She scoots over massaging my shoulders. "Tell me what's wrong." I sigh stroking my stomach feeling a wash of sadness. "I miss my dad. I hate to say it, but I do. These kids won't have a Grandpa." Ecco nods sighing dramatically. "I am so sorry, (Y/n). I wish I could help." I smile leaning my head on her shoulder. "How's that bullet feeling in there?" I tease as she giggles. "It's still rolling around in here!" She shakes her head, knocking the loose pieces in her brain. "I still can't believe you did it." She shrugs giggling, "Anything to help you, (Y/n)."
"Come on, let's see how the boss is. It's been a while since I've seen the progress."
Ecco helps me down the steps into the area where they're digging the large tunnel. "Wow! Looks, good everyone!" I yell, making the workers greet me with forced smiles. "Darling." Jeremiah clams walking to me, placing hands over my stomach with a grin. "Ecco, you're not supposed to bring her down here. It's dangerous." He glares at her. "Jer, I wanted to, she was obeying me." He reluctantly nods waving her away.
I switch the radio station finding a slow song and smiling. "Dance we me, Jer." I grasp his hand swaying with him to the music. "We're close aren't we?" I nod laughing. "Just three more months, Jeremiah." He shutters with a smile. "I can't wait."
Ranking the Winx Club Finales
I recently finished my rewatch (and first watch of a season and a half) of Winx Club and wrote out my thoughts on all of it. However, to send off a year that was in experience a lot like watching this series - meaning, generally frustrating and downright disappointing whenever I got excited over a thing with a few highlights that actually stuck the landing - and to get out any remaining feelings over the series, I have decided to rank the finales from least to most favorite. I just have a lot of rage to spare over season 8′s finale and needed an excuse to do so. Plus, I am being thematic here goddammit! Here we go:
8. Season 8
Yeah, I really spoiled that already. To sum it up:
But let me elaborate. Like I already said, this finale enraged the living fuck out of me. I just cannot comprehend whatever possessed them to write a finale so, so... excruciatingly devastating... to a season that started out with a lot of promise and had some extremely solid decisions (except for the art style, which is just NOT IT). This finale is an absolute disaster in every way. First, there is a new plot point introduced mere minutes before the finale and it is never tied into the overall narrative of the season which doesn’t do it any favors, especially after the two halves of the season already have trouble connecting together into one overarching story. The reason they brought in the creatures from the Dark Dimension was to distract Valtor while Winx make their attempt at stealing the stars which could have very well been a role filled by Arken confronting Valtor in an opportunity to clear up all the muddy details around their partnership and bring together the two halves of the season. The Winx’ plan had potential that was completely wasted by their own interruption instead of seeing each girl (provided Layla was playing Icy, Stella - Darcy and Musa/Tecna - Stormy) doing her best to pretend to be the Trix she’s posing as to give the Trix the due role they should have had in this finale. Instead, we get an Icy that is a complete opposite of the character we’ve known her to be for seven seasons all for the sake of a wish she doesn’t even get fulfilled despite her decision to help. Her motivation is a direct contradiction to the original plan of the Trix and disrespects her character from all previous instances of her being on the show for absolutely no reason as she is left with nothing in the end and the whole backstory they invented for her out of nowhere and couldn’t fit in any way with anything previously known about her was in vain because it was never resolved. Winx essentially manage to defeat Valtor once they wish for their own power-up and are gifted powers they haven’t really earned only to be pronounced great heroes who even get their own constellation in the sky. Come again? There was no narrative tension in this episode, no big climax to resolve what is supposedly the biggest threat in the universe at the moment, and no actual emotional conclusion to the season. It can’t even be called a messy wrap when so many threads were left hanging in there. A true disaster on every front.
7. Season 6
Even if you count both 6x25 and 6x26 as the finale of season 6, the structure is still lacking big time. Acheron who is the main drive of the entire season is defeated before the end of 6x25 and the Trix who are the other main villains were also more or less neutralized at that point to leave absolutely no stakes for the last episode so they had to pull some bullshit to fill it. The Winx are useless for the entire episode, including Bloom whose battle with the Trix is an absolute joke. Like, they can’t even think of syncing their attacks so that she can’t protect herself from all three of them with her ridiculously small shield and Bloom couldn’t even bother to actually buy herself enough time to leave the Legendarium. The only saving grace of that fight is the little emotional moment it causes for Bloom but that was also not really set up at any point of the season so it was just out of the blue. Selina changing her affiliations permanently even after the imminent threat for her life was neutralized made about as much sense as her turning evil in the first place and the fact that they needed her to lock the Legendarium made everything 1000% shittier because of how convenient it was that she just decided to turn good again without any justification for her course of actions. That coupled with the lack of consequences for any of her actions (she nearly killed Flora for heaven’s sake and no one even brought that up?) plus the dreadful info dump monologue they gave her just brought the whole thing down. The wrap-up of the season was also underwhelming after they had an entire episode that was mainly free of villains in order to close the other storylines... but, of course, there were no other storylines. Pretty disastrous.
6. Season 7
Just like in season 6, Winx were pretty useless here as they really didn’t do all that much for the plot. Luckily, the fact that the Trix were brought in allowed for the villains to have a battle that was more intriguing and provided some action as for a finale. The other key elements of the season (fairy animals, Trix, wild magic, Kalshara and Brafilius and the time travel) were actually woven together pretty well to make for a pretty satisfying finish to a season that really lacked any solid plot. The mini worlds and the Tynix transformation did not have use in the last episode but that wasn’t too catastrophic. There was actually a pretty emotional moment between the fairy animals and Winx that would have been even better if their relationships had been better developed throughout the season... You’d really think that since fairy animals were the main point of the season and there was no solid plot to account for, they would have taken the time to pay attention to Winx bonding with their fairy animals but nah. I am still impressed with how touching their goodbye was given the fact that they didn’t really have all that much time to actually become close so bonus points for that. The very last scene is a little generic but what else to expect from a season that has sung all its songs already (thank god that there were no musical numbers in this because I have a feeling it would have been even worse)?
5. Season 5
Season 5 could at least pat itself on the back for dealing with the main villain of the season even if there were a couple iffy things about the whole deal. I’m taking away consistency points for a) the fact that the Throne was supposed to be activated with the seals from the Pillars of the Infinite Ocean, yet suddenly stealing a random Sirenix would do, b) Tritannus being defeated by simply having his trident taken away even though he literally grew in body mass implying that the power of the Emperor’s Throne had seeped inside of him (also confirmed by Mystery of the Abyss) and c) the mutants inexplicably turning back into people once Tritannus lost his powers even though they never turned back during his times of relapsing back into a human thanks to running out of pollution. His defeat was just ridiculously easy and Bloom got to do it even though Layla was the one with the personal connection to Tritannus and the one most directly impacted by his actions as her family fell prey to him. Instead of getting to shine in a season that focused heavily not just on her home world but on the environment from which her powers come, she got benched in favor of Bloom getting to do everything again with only mild assist from Layla’s cousin. They should have kept it in the family and left Layla and Nereus deal with Tritannus. The Trix were blasted out of the narrative extremely conveniently and the rest of Winx were saved twice by the mutants just turning their back on them instead of destroying them right then and there and then being turned back into their original form as well. There wasn’t the usual teamwork of the whole Winx unit which I am still salty about despite being sick of all the time they reached for convergence in that season. Theredor fighting alongside Winx (different from his own daughter) was a nice touch but the king and queen of Andros coming off as so helpless (and apparently the only people in the castle unless you admit that everyone else drowned) was frustrating. Where was the Andros army? We only got Tressa, Roy, four of Winx and a handful of mermaids. Is that the whole population of the Heart of All Oceans? Additionally, the finale left no time for any emotional resolution of the season’s events, especially considering the big deal that Daphne’s revival was. Instead they opted for a musical number at the end. Not the best form.
4. Season 3
Season 3 had a finale and then another finale. Granted, better than season 6 that had a finale and then filler but there was not a lot of glory to the ending of a story with such a strong opening and emotional moments that send you bursting into tears. The spell of the four elements was pretty decent in its first appearance in 3x25 but the way Valtor lost it all was a real let down after the climatic confrontations between him and the Winx girls throughout the rest of the season. His return was more or less a desperate last attempt at personal revenge against Winx as his goal was mostly out of reach at this point. The spell of the elements was brought down in both its use to create clones of Winx’ boyfriends and in its power as it was much easier to undo in its reappearance. The saving graces of this season’s finale are the couple emotional moments sprinkled through both 3x25 and 3x26. Bloom’s willingness to sacrifice herself for her friends and the world was the thread that the finale hangs on as she is mostly the one resolving the whole conflict which was a bit dissatisfying after the emotional damage Valtor inflicted on all of them directly or indirectly. There is a few moments left to recover from the emotional intensity of their battles against Valtor but nothing that really addresses the seriousness of the trauma they had to survive because of him. The Trix didn’t even get to have a last stand of their own in either of the last two episodes despite the position in which they started the season but that was more or less unnecessary anyway since we’d already seen they can’t hold their ground against Enchantix Winx even with a boost from Valtor. Overall, the finale is pretty weak, especially as a follow-up of the dynamic and strong experiences that the season put them all through. It was the first finale that was confined to a single episode (or rather two separate battles spanning over an episode to end the season) and there wasn’t enough tension building in the confined storyline an episode told.
3. Season 4
The season 4 finale is overall a solid conclusion that delivers both a final battle with the Wizards and enough time left to address all the other storylines left unfinished. The final battle was pretty short but there was enough intensity in the previous couple episodes to have covered the action demand that the season had already set up and it also provided the opportunity to have Winx come back together as a team after Layla split up. Not only that, but Nebula and Roxy also get to play their part while the Wizards make their last desperate attempt to regain the upper hand. It’s pretty climatic for something that length that also left about 15 minutes of the episode still to fill. Everything that had to do with the closure of the Earth fairies storyline was emotional beyond belief and gave more depth to all of them and Layla’s decision to join them. Winx had to face all of the separate responsibilities they have on their shoulders and find a way to balance them all so that they can pursue their dreams. There was a plethora of emotional moments and a deserved spotlight shined on Layla’s situation and how she’s dealing with it, plus the others’ feelings. It was a really touching finale and also an inspiring one to see Winx stand behind their dreams while still balancing their responsibilities. It seemed to achieve the initial goal of the season to have them adapting to the adult life they were shifting into.
2. Season 2
I’m gonna be honest, I had a very hard time deciding whether this would be number one or two because the season 2 finale had a lot more character moments that were very moving. It really corresponds to the season since it was more character driven than the first one and the finale suited that. However, ultimately I decided that it would take silver because of a couple minor things that bring it down. To get that out of the way, the second portal to Realix that led Winx there was imo a copout that destroyed pretty much all of the tension that the entire season spent building around the search for the Codex. It just felt so wrong for there to be another way to enter that dimension and to me it was a big disappointment. Especially since the key to activating the copy of the Codex was the color riddle that was a ridiculous panicked attempt on the writers’ part to show that Stella isn’t useless and has what to give the team but it only made her look worse in my eyes. Also, minor gripe for the fact that there wasn’t that much of a final battle since everything ended with a single convergence. Of course, there were several battles across the episode between different sides that made for good action and tension and there was magic involved in more ways than simply the convergence in order to defeat Darkar but it was still a bit of a letdown to never truly see him put his everything in battle. And the fact that Griffin and Faragonda held him off for as long as they did on their own actually hurt his credibility as a threat as well. But hey, on the plus side, remember when the teachers actually helped and did not leave the fate of the whole universe in the hands of 16-year-olds? Good times! The MegaTrix and her? their? battle with Darkar was epic. 20/10 on that concept alone, plus it really brought a great feeling of vindication after the number Darkar did on them and felt so satisfying even if they were also part of the villain team of the season. They were portrayed as three-dimensional and weren’t cast out of the narrative without care just because they were villains and that was actually probably the most solid moment that the Trix have ever had on the show (just minor gripe for the fact that they were supposed to be trapped in Realix when the dimension was sealed forever but they were later somehow brought out of there which was never explained). Sky’s speech to Bloom was actually a pretty emotional moment and the payoff from it felt earned and allowed for Bloom’s victory against the darkness to feel natural and in place. It was probably one of their best moments as a couple. Plus, the cute little interactions that we got during the celebration party to send off the season on its merry way made for a great finale. (And a shoutout to the Musa x Riven scenes both in 2x25 and 2x26 because that was some good shit and some cute shit and it was exactly what we deserved).
1. Season 1
Season 1 reigns supreme with its finale. There is just no other finale that can rise to the level of the first one that was built for about one third of the season so that the last episode could dive right into the action without wasting time on setup. This is also the only place where we truly and fully get to see each of the Winx and the Trix (well, minus Layla who hasn’t been introduced yet) showcase their powers but especially Bloom and Icy. It is the longest battle we have seen and it builds a lot of tension on top of what was already there to leave you on the edge of your seat. The exploration of magic in this episode makes it so iconic and such a great watch even on the 300th time. There isn’t really much more to say than simply “It is epic”. What makes it even better though is the fact that there is enough time left in the episode to wrap up everything else and not in a rushed way. The battleground is extended to the locations that have already suffered the previous battles to show the full extension of the action and to setup the wrap-up that comes at the end. They even find the time to let some of the minor characters have distinct and touching moments as well and thus expand the universe of Winx further than just the main characters. Speaking off, they all get their moments, too, and the Specialists aren’t left out of that (you will never catch me not fangirling over Sky and Riven fighting back to back). The finale also doesn’t forget about the overarching story about Bloom’s origin which is commendable considering the constant lack of consistency the show suffers. This is really the only finale that isn’t lacking in any of the departments and manages to provide a truly fascinating story that keeps you entertained and in suspense while at the same time does not discard the emotional payoff or the logical continuation of events. It just excels in every way.
Well, this is my analysis on the finales of Winx Club. What started out as a bitch fest actually left on on a positive and uplifting note to make for a great ending to a harsh year. Let’s see what beginnings 2021 will bring! ;)
That bitch Ecco
*insert John Mulaney’s ‘She’s a bitch and I love her so much!’ here*
Why I like Them/Why I don’t
Her introduction is her punching Jerome in the face, how can someone not love her, omg.
I mean, we know nothing about her which maybe makes it harder to relate to her but I just think it makes her more intriguing. Like, what about her parents? Her Father apparently left when she was little, but what about her Mum?? When did she meet Jeremiah? Why the fuck did she pledge her life to him? Please, she’s a badass, why is she hanging around with him???
(Also where the fuck did she learn to fight, did she teach herself? Was she doing some kind of martial arts? Was she trained as a spy or something?? What is her past?????)
And then we have her going from a proxy to being Harley and like....once again, there’s no explanation as to why. I just enjoy thinking scenarios for her, wondering why she turned out the way she did and I am going through her tag daily, looking for some Ecco centric stuff - or even Eccomiah stuff that focuses on her a little (but she’s part of the female characters who get sidelined for Wayleska, just like Selina, which...I ship too! It’s nice! But sometimes I wanna have her tagged in a fic where she actually has a role aside from being mentioned once).
(Also I am a hypocrite and I hate when Selina is being pushed aside or forgotten when other Bruce ships come to play but I have some Selina/Jeremiah wips where I’m like ‘Bruce who????’ ahkdhaskjd, sue me for loving girls).
Also, Ecco is simply adorable and I saw her shake her head to rattle the bullet inside it and was like: Baby
(If Jeremiah won’t treat her right, I definitely will).
Favourite Episode/Favourite Season
She has so little episodes where she features, but she’s a delight in every scene she features in.
Favourite Season would probably be Season 5 because she has a bigger portion of screentime there and she’s Harley instead of Proxy or Mummer and while both of those personas are awesome (and fear-inducing), she’s a lot of fun crazy and unhinged.
Favourite Episode is Ace Chemicals, I’d say. Not that she has a big role in it (that would probably the scene where she fights Selina) but she’s interacting with Jervis there and that scene not only is my header but also made me ship them (and caters to my bisexuality alsjsadnln).
Also I have a fanfic in the works based on that scene because you cannot tell me that Jervis isn’t all heart-eyes over her.
(In my heart, every single villain adores Ecco and hates Jeremiah and they put up with him for her - but they’re all just quietly waiting for her to leave him lmao, they got the chocolate and roses ready, just in case).
Favourite Line
The only Ecco lines I have in my head are ‘Our cover is blownski’ and ‘She got me, Daddy’ and the last one made me fucking nauseous to listen to within the circumstances (I mean, deep fry Jeremiah? Really? No.) so I don’t have a favourite line I think.
But she also doesn’t talk much ashkhks, she either doesn’t talk at all as the mummer or let’s Jeremiah monologue.
(She’s probably more of a ‘Do it’ instead of talking about it girl and I stan her).
Favourite Outfit
ALL OF THEM
They’re all beautiful, props to the costume department
(also sorry you can't see them well, I used gifs from old edits that where still on my phone)
OTP
You would think it’s Eccomiah - and I do love them a lot - but I would give an arm and a leg for some Ecco/Jervis or Ecco/Selina content.
(Also Ecco/Bruce could be adorable and fucking hilarious at the same time, I love them).
Ecco is very much shippable with everyone and I’d read anything about her (pls I’m desperate).
(Also she deserves to be treated like a queen by someone to make up for the awful way Miah treats her in canon, so am I gleefully imagining scenarios of her leaving him and finding someone who treats her right while he’s cursing everything and feels miserable? Maybe).
Brotp
All the girls! Like Ecco and Ivy and Bridgit having meetups where Ivy and Bridgit keep telling her to dump her trash boyfriend askhjafbska
(But tbh, I can see every duo I’ve listed as an OTP as a Brotp too and vice versa. I mean...., you should like your spouse as a friend too askdkjdbkb).
Idk why, but I can’t really warm up to Ivy/Ecco (which is basically Harley/Ivy), but maybe that’s precisely because it would be like Harley/Ivy and I’m not really a fan of those two.
(I also have to admit that I enjoy Ecco a lot more than Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn).
Headcanon
Umm...idk? I kinda thought about her being russian? But I think that’s quite a popular thought, I saw some people mention it before!
My headcanons usually change to adapt the current au I am thinking about but a hc I keep in most of them is that Ecco was pretty straight to the point before she became Harley and that she isn’t one for social cues. She’s blunt.
(Which for me mostly means that Jeremiah pre-spray tried to flirt with her and she just. Didn’t respond to any of it. Not because she isn’t interested but because she doesn’t think much about Miah offering her things like sleeping in the guest bedroom. Makes sense, he works late and she’s within reach in case he needs anything, while he overthinks everything and basically offered her to move in with him lmao).
Unpopular Opionion
Idk if that’s unpopular but she’s a really good Harley Quinn version (I think all their villain versions are very good? Like, they also have the best joker version(s), Gotham knows how to entertain me).
A wish
Please, whoever’s in charge, drop what the writers would’ve done with her if Gotham wouldn’t have been cancelled, I am curious.
Was she meant to die and be replaced at one point to show how Miah is actually looking for the ‘finished’ Harley version, like it’s alluded to in the finale? If she’s not his forever companion, would she have betrayed him at some point? Or if she is supposed to be Harley, would she have teamed up with Ivy at some point?
Would we have gotten more scenes of her interacting with other villains? Would we have seen a bit more of her past or maybe a flashback scene of the shooting?
(I don’t think so, they probably would’ve kept her an insignificant side character but an enby can dream).
Also, if I’m already wishing, someone release the cut scenes involving her.
An oh-god-please-don’t-ever-happen
Finale? Which Finale? Gotham ends with Bruce leaving and nothing happens after that :)
5 words to best describe them
I’ll give you four ;)
Apologies
Alright! Here is part two for my Ultimatum series!!! I kept writing and re writing this just to get it in a place I could be happy with. This one kinda hit me the same way Ultimatum did, but like all things, it gets better. I’ll see you guys in the new year!!!
Please like, share, and follow!!!
It's been 3 months since I left Bruce in our room.... His room. It's been 3 months since he openly defended the woman he almost married, that obviously still wanted him. It's been 2 and a half months since I moved into my DC apartment that I kept for business trips. It's been one month since I've seen my boys and Cass. It's been two weeks since I've spoken to anyone.
It's been 3 hours since I found out I was pregnant.
Sitting in my bathroom, huddled into a corner after the initial shock gave way to my first bout of morning sickness. I have never felt more alone. I am a successful business woman who owns three companies and sit on the board of Wayne Enterprises. But I am scared of being a black single mother.
This should be the happiest day of my life, but ever since I got out of Gotham, I'm not sure what happy is anymore. Things felt like they couldn't get worse. Oh, but I hadn't even touched my mail. Right before I took my myriad of pregnancy tests, I got a letter from the Gotham Family Law Court system.
He's made his choice. He picked her.
Fine. I don't need him.... Except I do. I don't need his money, I don't need his status, hell, I don't need his protection. But I need him. I need his warmth at night to fall asleep. I need his low chuckles and small to ridiculous gestures that get me choked every time. I need his conversation that fills my heart with joy and attraction to his intelligent thoughts.
But now I need to let him go. He clearly wants to give all of that to a skinny bitch who crashed our anniversary.
It's times like this that I wish I couldn't love.
Another wave of nausea and vomiting have me praying over the porcelain throne. I haven't thrown up like this since I drank a whole Bar bottle of Henny in one go for $1k. This is going to be a rough pregnancy. When I've emptied my stomach and summoned the strength to stand, a knock starts at my door.
I scowl and clean myself up and quickly brush my teeth. If I'm gonna open my door, might as well put my good home training to use huh? I take a deep breath and walk to the door and glance into the peep hole. Why.... In the fuck...
Why the fuck is Bruce here?
Before I can walk away from the door, he speaks loud enough for me to hear but softly enough not to draw attention.
"Y/N, I know you're in there. I heard you come to the door. We need to talk"
...We need to talk huh? I suppose he's gonna break up with me to my face like a man. I'll give him credit for that, but that doesn't mean I'll answer. Damn sure doesn't mean I'll open the door.
I softly pad back into the bedroom and lay on a chaise lounge and put my head down. If he's serious about wanting to talk, he can get in by himself. Just as I think it, I hear my door unlock and open. Whether he had a key made or picked the lock, he was in. The resourceful bastard.
I refuse to let him see me vulnerable. Regardless the state of my heart or stomach. I lift my head, sit up straight, smoothed my braids, and set the iciest RBF I could muster. Time to face the music.
He slowly makes his way into my bedroom as if it were a trap... Who the hell does he think I am? Riddler?! He glanced around the room, taking in and sizing up his surroundings before steadying his gaze at me.
It took everything in me not to show that this man still sends shivers down my spine with a single look. He and I never moved, never said a word to each other. It felt like crossing the desert and seeing the ocean in front of you, but not knowing if it's a mirage.
At that moment, nauseousness decided to be the overwhelming feeling. I slowly control my breathing to try and hold it off. Maybe he'll get to the point soon and I can scurry back into my bathroom once he's gone.
I don't realize that I've closed my eyes until I hear a ripping sound. I open them slowly with curiosity and see Bruce, standing at the foot of my bed, destroying the letter from the court. At this point, my confusion is off the charts, but I calm myself. Don't need to vomit on my new hardwood floors.
It's mother fucking Mahogany.
He looks me in the eyes, and I almost caved. He dropped his walls and I have never seen this man so broken. He took a shallow breath. "I sent the divorce papers the day after you left. A week later, I found out that Selina is married and has been for the past decade . I made... A terrible mistake. I hurt you, destroyed your trust in me, and defiled our marriage. I have no right to ask for you back, but if-" at that moment, the dam burst. I ran to the toilet and kicked the door closed with my foot.
I have no idea how long I'd been hunched over the toilet when I felt warm, strong hands pull my hair into a ponytail and slowly rub circles into my back. If it weren't for the fact that this man has literally 50 shaded me (Whatever chapter you're thinking of, yes, that one.), I would be embarrassed.
Once I finished my dry heaves, I felt heavy and tired. I could barely muster the will to stand, let alone open my eyes. But those same strong hands were there. They picked me up and carried me to my bed. I blinked slowly and he disappeared back into the bathroom. The toilet flushed and the tap turned on and off. He came back with a damp washcloth and a small cup of water.
I don't remember the last time I was taken care of like this. By him. The concern was etched into his face as he sat me up and helped me take small sips... Maybe now was a good time to tell this detective what he probably has figured out by now...
"Thank You. You didn't have to do this" I said taking a deep breath. I gave up on a strong front and nestled myself into his arms. He set the cup down and curled himself around me. He kissed my forehead and sat us against the headboard. "Yes I did. You take care of the people you love. I haven't been very good at showing it, but I do love you.... So, how long have you known?" He murmured into my hair. I almost didn't respond, getting lost in the loving touches and the soft embrace. I was in my happy place again. A place I never thought I'd be in again. I'm in his arms.
"I just found out a few hours ago. Woke up and set a new record for how fast someone can get from a bed to a toilet. Flash would be proud."
Bruce let out a whisper of a chuckle before softly kissing every inch of brown skin that he could reach. I don't know how long we sat there, just holding each other. It felt like I was finally able to breathe after running an eternal marathon.
"Come home. We miss you. Alfred misses watching his afternoon soaps with you. Dick misses watching Project Runway with you. Jason misses your weekly trips to the library. Tim misses playing video games with you. Damian misses how you stroke his hair when he's upset. Duke misses going to the barbershop with you..... I miss everything we had. I am willing to work on us. Counseling, therapy, building a nursery myself, you name it and I'll do it. I just want my sunshine back in my world" Bruce pleaded. I looked up at him and saw the sadness and love in his eyes. I nodded and softly placed a kiss on his lips.
It's time to go home.
What if Kate and Bruce were born around the same time? What if the tragedies that made them the heroes they become, also happened around the same time? What if the two of them ended up living together? What if the two of them ended up as huge theater nerds? What if they had some actual healthy coping mechanisms along side their totally not super unhealthy vigilante detective hobby that nearly kills them on a weekly basis? What if everything wasn't a shitty cheap ass drama show written by racist, misogynist, homophobic, all the bad ism's and phobia's and ist's?
(No disrespect to the individuals who try to give us good diverse content. Actually, all the respect because DC as whole is a weak dumb ass bitch and kudos to those people for tolerating that bastard.)
Here is my sad, pathetic attempt to fix the DC universe that I am very much under qualified and under prepared for. Enjoy. (And I'll get to finishing the relationship tags soon, it's just not on the agenda right about now. There is just so many fucking characters. For Blair and Veronica, maroon, peach, amber, and honey :)
Omg, Blair and Veronica!!! Yessss! Thank you hun!!! It’s uh...under the cut, and normally I would separate them out in different sections for each character...but they apparently wanted to interact with each other...which is a bit amusing, considering they’re both technically DC, but in very different universes (and medias). I am so sorry lol
Send me a shade of color for my oc(s) to answer!
Maroon - What are you most passionate about?
Blair: “Oh! Space and physics. Well...I guess just science in general? I love figuring out problems and equations, which comes in handy often at S.T.A.R. Labs and on the Waverider. But I’ve always loved space, my dad and I would spend hours in our backyard with a telescope! I can map out all the constellations and name all the planets and their moons. And a lot more...this is usually the part where the you say ‘neerrrd’.”
Veronica: “Passionate about? Phew, not sure. I mean, I love music. I kinda miss my band. But I suppose I’m passionate about helping people--”
Blair: “Oh, add that one to mine too! Helping people...kinda comes with the hero gig.”
Veronica: “Yeah, but you’ve said yours, so it doesn’t count--”
Blair: “It totally counts!”
Veronica: “I guess just my chosen family and saving people. It changes for me, you know? It used to be stealing pretty stuff, but well, people change. I just love working with Dinah and the team.”
Blair: “Wait...my Dinah or your Dinah?”
Veronica: *sigh*
Peach - Are you generally a more gentle and soft spoken person or a louder and rougher person?
Blair: I’m definitely the former. I speak softly and gentle unless I’m mad, but even then my tone is just...soft. My voice can become stern when I’m frustrated. But it can be a bit...harder than normal when I get pushed past my limit. I can be loud, though, especially when excited. I just naturally have a soft voice.”
Veronica: Right. Well, I’m more loud and rough, if I’m being honest. Don’t get me wrong, I can be quiet--trained by Catwoman and Batman, remember? So I know how to sneak around and be silent. But most of the time, I like things loud, I’m a loud person. You should have seen Alfred’s face when I used the Manor as a place to practice for my band...or any of the other times Jay and I did something disruptive...”
Amber - Do you wield any sort of superpower? If so, what is it?
Blair: *nervous laugh* “About that...”
Veronica: “Oh boy...”
Blair: “Okay, so, it wasn’t my fault...even though I did help with making the Particle Accelerator--”
Veronica: “And apparently helping it explode, then?”
Blair: “Shush. So...I can actually manipulate energy with my mind and...hands...? It actually manifests around my hands...which is...I guess cool...? It’s pretty to look at, especially when I make energy fields, kinda like shields, they look like...moving nebulas, blues and purples. Really pretty. But well...there are moments--rare moments--where I lose control and the atmosphere around me just turns to into space-like conditions. I’ve sucked the oxygen out of a room and made the temperature just...plummet. But I’ve had it do the opposite only once, where I turned it into uh...a star? It was kinda like a solar flare, but not. It was just...really bright and hot. Don’t tell Mick, he’ll get excited and try to poke it out of me.”
Veronica: “Metas...right, no, I don’t have a superpower. I’m just really good at fighting and stealing things. I took ballet, gymnastics, and even was on the swim team for a minute. So I’m flexible and can fight pretty well--Batman and Black Canary made sure of it. So I guess...yeah, I’m just a regular human.”
Blair: “I mean, who is really normal, though?”
Honey - Have you ever considered marrying someone? What is your opinion on marriage in general?
Blair: “Oh...so, I mean...I was engaged once, her name was Carmen, and she left before I woke from my coma--”
Veronica: “That’s pretty cold. And super shitty. Who is this?”
Blair: “Right, so, I did consider marrying her. But...I don’t know, there was someone else. Leonard...mentioned, you know, thinking about life after the Vandal Savage stuff. The future for him, for me...for us. And I mean, yeah, I considered it, I could see it...until you know, he sacrificed himself. But when Barry did Flashpoint, I asked what it was like, just to see, even though the others didn’t want to know...and it just...for Barry to tell me that in an alternate timeline, Leonard and I were actually engaged was just...it hurt at first, because I wanted that. But then the more I thought about it, the more hollow it felt. I would rather have something real, in the timeline I currently live in. So...yeah, I would consider marrying someone, and I hope maybe one day I can have it.”
Veronica: “...what? What kind of...what?”
Blair: “Listen, it’s a bit complicated and Captain Cold isn’t--”
Veronica: “CAPTAIN COLD? Are you--?”
Blair: “Things are DIFFERENT in my verse, thank you!”
Veronica: “What the fu--yeah, no, I’m not...okay, back to the question. I’m not against marriage, it sounds like something that would be very nice, but I never really thought it was in the cards for me, you know? I may or may not have feelings for someone--”
Blair: “Dick Grayson--”
Veronica: “Shut it. But I mean, it never became a thing, he was dating Babs when I left, so...
Blair: “And now...?”
Veronica: “Well...I mean, I did just pack up and leave in the middle of the night without really telling anybody. I left Selina a note, though. There’s that. So I think it would be a bit awkward to just hop back randomly in his life after pulling that. He’s probably hurt because I skipped out of town without a word. Can’t blame him.”
Blair: “I feel...like, you’re going to have to face that at some point. You’ll end up in...”
Veronica: “Gotham.”
Blair: “Gotham...really? I know Star City is bad, but Gotham? I heard its way worse.”
Veronica: “You live in Star City?”
Blair: “From Central City, lived in Star City, might be moving back to Central City. But the point is, you never know, you might find yourself having to bounce back to Gotham. Time wants to happen, my friend, and it’s probably going to want you to face your past.”
Veronica: “You a psychologist or something?”
Blair: “Astrophysicist.”
Veronica: “...Right.”
Here with You
A/N: Hi everyone! This is my first requested fluffy fic from @yeetthatpussy. Thank you so much for the idea! This was fun and a big change for me since all I do is write smut and nasty things hahaha. Also, I want to point out I did not give Bruce an age or the reader, since I believe readers should imagine Bruce and themselves the way they want. I personally imagine Bruce like how he was in the animated movie, “Justice League War” since I happened to be watching that particular movie a while ago (because some of you might imagine Ben Affleck, Christian Bale, or the new Robert Pattinson). So other than that enjoy the story!
@randomdcfangirl @jasonredtoddhood @lady-of-the-abyss @psychovigilantewrites Enjoy this my friends.
Warnings: Language and just pure pink, yummy fluffy cotton candy!
It became a habit; a tradition really, when Bruce and I would have free time to hang out. Every Friday night is our “friend date time”, the title came from Bruce, when he realized over the past two months that I’m the first female in his life who has remained by his side and hasn’t put up with his bullshit.
True, women have come and gone throughout his life, specifically Selina Kyle. I’m no stranger to her, since she has played a pretty big part in Bruce’s life. Although she was always civil to me, I admit, I couldn’t help but feel envious of her beauty and body.
I sometimes wonder why Bruce permanently let her go.
I consider myself average. Maybe not overly beautiful like supermodels, but I’ve been told by family and friends I’m awfully pretty, sweet, funny, and kind. I’m about average height, and I admit I do have feminine curves. But overall, I’ve learned to love myself, and I’ve also had my fair share of ex-boyfriends and dates.
But none of my relationships have lasted more than three months. Considering my anxiety and what my doctor has described as PTSD from the eight year mental and physical abuse from my alcoholic father and uncle, my past boyfriends left me because I’m a nutcase (they really didn’t know how to help me or understand my past and current issues). Let’s just say I’m too much to handle when I’m alone or in a too comfortable environment.
And my latest ex-boyfriend Josh (who was a sweetheart, but I broke up with him because I just couldn’t be in another relationship at that moment) has been hinting to get back together with me for some time. But after I realized I’m never going to be able to move on from my past, I accept the fact that I should be alone and stay alone.
Because at least I would never betray or hurt myself, I believe.
But here I am. I’m being escorted to our usual table at one of Bruce’s restaurants. The waiter smiles once we meet up with Bruce at our table.
Knowing Bruce for a few years has given me reason maybe some men aren’t so bad. The media and tabloids have always painted him as a man-whore and spoiled rich boy, but after witnessing the doofus trip over his own shoes at work, (I happened to be at Wayne Enterprises for an interview with him, as I am a journalist) I realized he was exactly like everyone else.
Clumsy, foolish, and funny.
Bruce stands to greet me, while looking extremely handsome in black suit. His hair is nicely combed, and his grin is his usual smirk. His blue eyes brighten the room from its golden décor.
“Y/N, you look beautiful,” Bruce compliments me, with a kiss to the cheek.
It’s true. I feel more confident tonight since I’m wearing my favorite short black Gucci dress. I decided to curl my hair a bit and wear little makeup since I try very hard to look more natural to love myself more.
“You’re not so bad yourself, Bruce,” I respond politely. I sit down, and he pushes my chair in. As he takes his seat, the waiter quickly brings our appetizers of loaded potato skins and mozzarella cheese sticks and marinara sauce. “Didn’t you want to stay home and order pizza and watch a movie?”
“We did that last week. I figured...why not treat my favorite girl to a fancy dinner so we can talk shit about the rich people around us while we pig out on our favorite food?” Bruce answers, and gives me a soft smile.
“I guess you have a point since food is always a way to win me over,” I chuckle and then raise an eyebrow at him. “Did you just say I’m your favorite girl?”
“Well, you are Y/N. I mean, you gave me a chance to show you the real me. You didn’t let the media and tabloids change your mind about me. You know me better than most people think they do. Hell, you’ve even been there for me during the anniversary of my parents’ deaths. You’ve even seen me in my darkest times, and not once did you leave me or try to change who I am,” Bruce confesses softly. It sounds as if he wants to continue on with his confession, but he stops himself. He ends up smirking at me. “Anyways, is Josh still bothering you so you can take him back?”
“No, I mean…I haven’t heard from him today. What about Selina?” I tease him back.
“I haven’t spoken to her in four months. But I guess I wouldn’t know if she’s called the manor considering you take up most of my time anyways. I swear, the more we hang out with each other, the more we become like a married couple.”
“A married couple?” I repeat.
“Yes, since we’re always together and you know me better than any other woman. Hell, I don’t think I even allow most women to know certain details about my parents’ deaths or my sons. I have to protect so much of my life, but with you, I just found out I want to protect you as well,” Bruce explains.
I’m stunned to hear this right now. Of course, I know about Bruce’s parents’ deaths. I even know about his sons: Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian, too.
The sweet, handsome charming Dick Grayson.
The tough, strong and huggable teddy bear man Jason Todd.
The smart, wise, and computer genius Tim Drake.
And of course, the small, mature, handsome Damian Wayne, Bruce’s miniature version of him.
I knew Dick, Jason, and Tim were Bruce’s adopted sons (and he loves and worries about them so much) and I’ve even come to love every one of them, especially Damian. Bruce had told me Damian’s mother had left him with Bruce, and even though Damian had been arrogant, rude, and sometimes defensive, he’s come to respect me and even likes me hanging around the manor as long as I don’t steal his father most of the time.
And being close to all of them, I see Bruce has made a wonderful family, and I envy almost everything about that.
I even know Alfred. He’s a one real son of a bitch who doesn’t put up with Bruce either.
But the way Bruce is speaking of me kindly is starting to freak me out. I was never one to receive compliments or kindness before.
I decide to change the subject quickly. We both serve ourselves our favorite appetizers and dig in.
“So, what are your sons doing tonight? Causing trouble or just lounging around the manor?” I ask, with a small smile.
But Bruce seems to not realize what I did; unless he’s hiding it.
“Dick is probably out with Barbara. And I believe Jason, Tim, and Damian are bothering Alfred for their usual nighttime snacks,” Bruce replies, and then exhales heavily. “Y/N...I-I really need to talk to you and I just need you to listen.”
“Bruce...” I warn him. My heart already aches because I’ve been keeping a secret of my own and I finally realize what frightens me.
Bruce.
Bruce terrifies me.
Why?
Because I’m in love with him.
My mind flashes back to the memories of when Bruce tripped, and how everyone chucked at the Prince of Gotham, and how I helped him with a small smile on my face, because he took my breath away with his natural charm and handsome good looks. And when he showed up at my apartment with pizza and horror movies because I was too sick to leave and go out into the chilly rainstorm.
Or how when my younger sister got married, Bruce offered to be my “date” since he knew I couldn’t find a date in time. But he also showered the bride and groom with gifts and surprised my sister and my new brother-in-law with an amazing already paid honeymoon to Paris and Italy for an entire week! The whole night we spent dancing together, my head rested against his chest, and then I suddenly felt my heart beating inhumanly fast and slow at the same time.
Bruce’s hands remained on me the entire night. Just him touching me made me feel I was dancing on clouds the entire night.
Just the thought of Bruce makes me want to faint and fall because these feelings are scaring the shit out of me.
“Please listen to me, Y/N. I need to tell you what’s been going on in my head lately, because I don’t know how much longer I can keep it to myself,” Bruce begins, appearing more nervous than before. The usual confidence and smile on his face is now replaced with his eyes pleading for me to listen to him and his body is tense. “I-I don’t think I can keep pretending to be your best friend anymore. I can’t keep acting like I just want to be your friend. I can’t stick around anymore and see you date assholes who don’t know the real beautiful, kind, funny girl, you really are. Just the thought of you dating them makes me want to beat the shit out of them and possibly drop them off on a deserted island forever...okay that last part was supposed to be a joke, but I guess my sense of humor is different than most. Maybe I’m not kidding at all...”
I can feel my stomach hurt from this stressful situation. Bruce sees me eyeing the exit.
“Y/N, I-I love you. I love you so much that just saying these words isn’t common for me, because after all these years of meaningless dates, hookups, and reckless partying, I think I see why love is very rare. I didn’t think I would ever fall in love, and I even trained myself not to either. My parents were the true definition and example of love, and with them gone, I suppose I really let myself fall more into the darkness and isolation than I ever thought I could reach. But knowing you, you just showed up in my life as sunshine; just bursting with energy and life in a room when all my life I felt alone. W-what I’m really trying to say is, I want us to give us a chance.”
I slowly look up at him. I instantly felt betrayed, as if this is just a joke. “You...want to date me?” I barely whisper.
“Of course, Y/N. I’m serious about this,” Bruce says, appearing as if I’ve offended him and doubted him. He looks distraught and anxious. “I’m-I’m in love with you. I want us to be together. Official.”
When those words leave Bruce’s mouth, I suddenly realize, he’s NEVER, EVER said those words before. The words sound raw and rare; like a child speaking for the first time in their lives.
The thought of being close to a man like Bruce sends waves of paranoia and fright throughout my body. The last time I was intimate or even lying next to a man resulted in nightmares and fears of being hurt all over again.
I was just a child when my father and uncle would come home from work drunk, and how they would request my little sister and I to climb in bed with them. Being the oldest, I tried my hardest to protect my sister, and I ended up fighting them back; defending us from their violent drunken behavior.
Which always resulted with me getting hit, slapped, kicked, and thrown to the ground. Even though I eventually learned to fight back, I would always panic and feel defenseless until I fight back.
But it would always come down to that first hit to the face that would make every memory and nightmare come back to life for me.
I can just feel my father’s fist striking my mouth again.
The pain feels real again.
“How could you be in love with me if you don’t know a thing about me?” I ask. I realize I sound harsh and bitter.
“What?”
“Let me just say one thing, Bruce. You don’t really know me, because I only let you see what I want you to see,” I snap. I fill with sudden anger and pain. If only Bruce knew the real me. If only Bruce saw what kind of pathetic mess I am. “Unlike you, your life is Gotham’s most known story of your parent’s generosity, luxury, and their deaths. You don’t have to hide anything. I myself, have to hide a lot just so I don’t lose my mind and get locked up in Arkham and so I don’t lose those closest to me because I’m a walking, fucking time-bomb. Do you know how hard it is to put on a strong, brave, face even when I want to cry and show everyone how hurt I am and how much pain I go through each day?! You don’t because your life is fucking perfect, so why don’t you leave me alone and go find the perfect girl because I’m too damaged to love and fix!”
The pain, anger, and fear take over me. I knock all glasses of wine and plates of food off the table and I storm out, leaving a poor, terrified Bruce Wayne behind.
I’m rushing down the sidewalk to go far away, anywhere from here. The tears fall down my cheeks, and I start to hate myself even more for letting my past get the best of me.
After everything that’s happened, I don’t think I’m fully capable of being in love, in a serious relationship, married, having children, or just a family in general.
Only good people have that; the people who were never hurt or touched dangerously in their whole lives.
Just when I think I’m far away, Bruce manages to catch up to me by running VERY fast. He grabs my arm to stop me, and just that forceful touch awakens something within me: I go into defense mode to protect myself.
Just like all those years ago.
“Don’t fucking touch me!” I yell. My fist makes a hard connection to Bruce’s jaw; knocking him to the ground.
People around are watching us; gasping and pointing at us. Bruce looks up at me and holds his jaw. “Ow...”
I begin to breathe heavily before I begin to cry again. Bruce immediately gets back on his and comes to me.
“Y/N...please tell me what’s bothering you,” Bruce says softly. He doesn’t lie a hand on me, but he’s watching me intently.
“My past. I-I can’t seem to move forward without having to be dragged back every mile,” I answer quietly.
“Is this about your father and uncle?”
My eyes widen. I look up at him. “How did you-”
“You talk in your sleep. I’ve heard you have nightmares before, and after listening and lying beside you for some time, I put the pieces together. They abused you, and you tried to get out,” Bruce admits, before he sighs. “The reason why I never told you I knew about it is because I wasn’t sure if telling you was...appropriate, and considering you never made the attempt to tell me yourself. I just...didn’t want to cross a line and make you feel more pain, but I suppose I fucked up by not saying anything.”
“It’s not your fault. I always figured, ‘why bring it up if you’re just going back to past when you just want to be here’...in the present,” I mutter under my breath.
I think back on the times Bruce and I would fall asleep on his couch. After our movie nights, I would fall asleep on his arm and he would hold me until the morning came. Ever since then, the couch has been like a bed to us; the closest to a bed we’d ever share.
“I’m sorry, Y/N. I-I didn’t know how much pain you’ve been in. But please let me help you,” Bruce begs, and reaches out to touch my hands but removes them quickly after what happened. “You don’t have to be alone during this time. Let me be there like you were there for me.”
“I’m never going to get better, Bruce. I have so many ugly scars, I could never be loved for who I am and what I've been through. After all this time, I thought I would be my best, but I ended up just getting worse. Maybe I should just give up and be at peace with myself for the first time in forever,” I whisper. “I’ll just keep trying again and again, because I don’t think there’s a reason to keep going forward, because I never will.”
Bruce’s mouth opens to speak, and the horror takes over his face when I find the little strength to stroll over to the street and walk into the fast driving cars in traffic in hopes of dying the quickest way possible.
A taxi is speeding down an open lane and is heading right for me. I stop in my tracks and look at the driver in hopes my past will never hurt me again.
Because I’ll be dead.
But strong arms pull me out of the way; knocking me and whoever saved me back onto the sidewalk. I’m on top of a big, hard body and the time I sit up to look down, I see Bruce, breathing hard.
“Y/N, are you okay?” Bruce asks me. He sits up as I stand up. Once he’s on his feet, he quickly removes us from the eyes of the public and we both head into an abandoned alleyway.
“I would have been okay, if you didn’t stop me,” I answer, slightly angry from him stopping me. “Why did you stop me, Bruce? Why can’t you just let me finally let go of everything?”
“Because if I lost you, I wouldn’t have a reason to go on either,” he says quietly. “Please don’t ever do that again. I-I can’t lose you. I need you in my life. I need you with me.”
“What about your sons? Alfred?”
“I love them, but I also love you too, Y/N. Dying...is never the answer. It’s darkness that you’re trying to escape, but no matter what, it will be with you forever. I’ve seen death, and I’ve also seen good people who allow the darkness and fear change them into people who could never be saved. I may not know everything that happened in your past, Y/N, but I know you’re stronger than you think you are. And you’re beautiful, Y/N. Everyone has ugly scars, including me. But if you managed to get this far in life, I would say that’s an accomplishment not many people can achieve,” Bruce says softly, before he finally holds my hands. I let him, and I let myself cry more. “Trust me, there were times I almost let my inner demons take over my life and emotions. I almost let go at a young age too. But then I have come to learn from an old friend that in every darkness, there’s light. You just have to find your light, and you’ll never be alone.”
I wipe my tears and smile up at him. “Alfred?” I ask.
“Yes, Alfred taught me that. Do you know who my light is?”
“Your sons? Alfred?”
“All of you,” Bruce answers.
“Even me? How?” I ask, completely shocked.
“Because after I met you, I...I felt normal. Human. I don’t have to try too hard with you, and I don’t have to put on a face of confidence and behave like I’m better than everyone. The playboy billionaire title doesn’t exist to me, because when I’m with you, I’m here with you, and that’s all that matters to me. I can laugh at stupid jokes. I can walk around in just a t-shirt and regular jeans around you. Hell, I can even talk shit about other celebrities with you. I can even tell you about my own nightmares, and how someday, I hope I really can make my parents proud of me. I trust you with all that and only you, Y/N,” Bruce reveals.
He finally takes the first step. Lowering his head to mine, he kisses me. Our lips connect like magnets, and the heat between us is hotter than hell, I believe. With one hand, Bruce holds my face gently, as the other holds my waist.
And for the first time in forever, I’m not afraid.
After Bruce pulls away, he looks down at me with a small smile. He pushes a strand of my hair behind my ear.
“I really care about you, Y/N. I love you, and if I have to wait a bit to be with you, then I’ll wait as long as I need to,” Bruce says.
“Thank you...for being patient with me and for just being there Bruce,” I say.
“I’ll always be here for you, because there’s nowhere else I rather be than be here with you, Y/N.”
“Same for me too,” I admit.
Bruce wraps an arm around me and leads me back to the restaurant. “How about pizza?” he asks curiously.
“And a movie?”
“Of course.”
“Will the boys be there?”
“Most likely but as soon as that movie ends, they’re gone. It’ll just be you, me, and my couch.”
I smile, a real smile that’s not forced for the first time in a long while. “I’d love that. I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
“I know what you mean,” Bruce whispers to me. “Because all I want is you here with me.”
“And I’ll be here with you every day.”
Was it good? Let me know please! I’m used to smut and I think it’s safe to say that this fic was a challenge but a good one!
Dinner and Reconciliation
[ Collaborative RP with @themarmaladeblog / @waynecorp-incorporated ]
[S]
Selina is precisely on time. She prides herself on it, in fact; five thirty means five thirty, and not a minute later.
So it is at five thirty that she, in clothes meant to suit the season and slightly on the flirty side, knocks at the Wayne Manor Door.
[B]
Bruce, himself, answers the door. He's in a suit, a personal comfort, though it's too hot for even his constitution to weather a jacket. Summer and three pieces don't really get along.
"Selina." He says, and tries to smile. It more or less works, though his eyes crease with something decidedly other than pleasure at seeing her. Still, he steps aside and with a grand, if halfhearted gesture, waves her into his home.
"Been a couple days, you look... good."
[S]
Inwardly, Selina sighs. Awkward, great. She counts silently to three before she tosses him a radiant smile over her shoulder. "Come now, darling, we've spent longer apart than this."
"And since when have I delivered on anything less than stunning for you, heart? Though I understand, circumstances being what they are...."
"I am glad to see you, Bruce. I am always going to be glad to see you, pet."
"The tension in your shoulders isn't called for, I promise."
[B]
He rubs the back of his neck. Is he... tense? He hadn't noticed.
.... Okay, that's a bold faced lie, but he was used to it, he hadn't thought she had noticed. Bruce makes a mental note to lower his proverbial hackles, just a little. His shoulders sink, still as his posture remains.
"Right, yeah, of course. I uh, I wasn't sure if you'd want to eat, or, see Marmalade first, or...?"
[S]
"We can eat, and... talk, how does that sound?" Selina shrugs her bag off her shoulder, smile fading as she turns her head away from Bruce again. Well...
Jervis had said he was nervous. She didn't think he'd be this nervous, so that's.. certainly something to adapt for, but she's dealt with worse.
She's pretty sure she's dealt with worse, anyway. Not with Bruce, though....
Ah well, stage face on.
She knows where the dining room is, and starts there presently. "After all, you look as to have quite a few things on your mind, my love."
[B]
"Yeah, you could say that." He agrees, following a step behind. His mind races as he walks. Is this goodbye? Is that really such a bad thing if it is? What had she even been seeing him for anyway for all this time?
He should... probably ask that, come to think of it. That'd be a good thing to get off his chest.
Instead of that perfectly eloquent list of questions, however, Bruce goes with the much better choice of: "Why are you here, Sel?"
[S]
Selina... blinks. And turns her head to blink at Bruce directly, instead of the hallway she was in the process of navigating. Stops walking, and all that - no one needs to go crashing into an antique over befuddlement.
"I beg your pardon?" Her tone is light, confused, no edge to her words. She's scarcely sure she heard him right, even, and so her brow furrows. "Why am I... here, darling?"
"It's to see you, of course, dear. I'm afraid I don't believe I really understand your question....?"
[B]
"No, I get that. I do. I figured it wasn't just for my cat, I just...."
"Why? Why do you want to see me?" He knows this isn't the right way to phrase this. Not slightly. Nor should he be allowing frustration and anger into his tone, and yet... and yet.
Internally, in fact, he berates himself: Bruce, this is Selina we're talking about. Selina. Cool your temper, my man, she's always been on your side, even after figuring out the mask. Relax, just a little.
But internally, a stronger voice, demands answers. Damn the phrasing. You're the Batman.
[S]
Puzzled blinking becomes... a quiet frown. She's being rebuffed. All right then, she can play this game too, Bruce.
She turns to face him fully, lifts her chin, and draws herself up to her fullest height. Back straight, severely so, lips a thin line, eyes narrowed only slightly.
"I'm sorry darling, I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, could you please elaborate on that a little?"
[B]
Bruce draws himself up too, preparing, mentally, for a fight, but - but.
The smaller voice wins out. This is Selina, it yells down his anger, What the hell is wrong with you, Bruce?
And, so he deflates. His gaze drops from her narrowed eyes to the floor, and he picks a bit at one sleeve with his fingernails. "...Sorry."
"I'm not really sure what I mean." Liar. "Or at least," He amends, "I don't know how to phrase it. Come on, let's... get food, I'll figure it out. Pretend I never said anything."
[S]
"No, Bruce, you don't get to just walk away after insinuating that I had ulterior motives for coming here today." Her eyes narrow further, and she does not budge.
"Did you think I was going to rob you? Or that I was here to mock you, or...?"
"Talk, Bruce. I want to hear what you're thinking."
[B]
Oh.
He shuffles, and, moves to lean against, something, so he can look up but doesn't have to look at her. He doesn't really want to look at her.
"I - I don't think that little of you, Sel. I promise. I just...."
"You made it clear you don't love me, so I don't really know why you're still humoring me."
[S]
Selina is... quiet, for a few moments. Staring at Bruce's face - she will move, if she has to, so she can stare at Bruce's face.
Silent, calm, passive, with an unreadable mask in place. Her arms cross, and she taps a fingernail against her bicep in thought.
"....If your view of me is that shallow, Mister Wayne, then I suppose I can collect my things and go, shall I?" She asks, and her tone is as calm and even as her expression.
Calm, even, and terribly cold. Dangerously so, in fact.
[B]
His head jerks up in alarm. Wait, what? What did he do? He did something. He has no idea what he stumbled over, and he searches Selina's face for answers. What?
"Wait, what? No, what do you...? You told me you didn't love me, Selina, you... didn't you?"
"That's what the whole thing, this whole thing is about, Sel, isn't it?" He frowns, frantic.
"Don't, don't just leave, I don't understand - did I miss something?"
[S]
...Sigh. Selina closes her eyes, and presses two tips to her temple, massaging it. This dear, stupid man, honestly now...
No, it's wrong to expect him to understand just because she talks about it on her blog, she can at least - really now, Bruce do you read nothing that I write? - ugh, she can explain. She will explain.
"I want to sit down." She informs him, without opening her eyes. And with that, she turns, and starts towards the dining room again. "You've got a few things mixed up, darling, the least I can do is clarify. But don't you dare say that I don't care for you, really and truly and genuinely."
"Frankly I thought you knew me better than that."
[B]
Bruce stumbles to follow, head reeling only slightly. She does? Love him? Then? But she... talked about how she didn't? Days ago.
He doesn't get it. Not at all. But promise of an explanation has him following her, and pulling a chair out in a bustle to be a proper gentleman. And maybe it'll put her back in a good mood, who knows?
Not him.
He, apparently, doesn't know anything.
[S]
He'll have to wait. She does accept the seat with a tight-lipped smile, and treats Alfred to a much warmer one when he comes around to explain what's been cooked, or is cookable. She makes her selection, requests a glass of wine, and is well settled and with something to drink before she'll even look at Bruce again.
"...Love and Romance are not the same things." She says, simply, scowling at Bruce over the lip of her glass.
"I have no desire for the latter, but that doesn't mean I don't love you, you fool of a man. If I didn't, I'd have taken my money from this place and left years ago."
[B]
Bruce's heard skips in his chest. Probably not literally, but who can tell these days? He's been thrown into so many walls, a murmur is just par for the...
No. Stop it. Stop that train of thought. This is not about Batman, this is not about injuries, this is not about dwelling in dark shit, Bruce. Bruce.
For ten fucking seconds, Bruce, talk to the people you're looking at and stop getting lost in your own god damn problems. Focus. Okay? Got it? She said she loves you.
He blinks back into reality, mouth dry, close to tears. Water will save him there, he decides. "You do?"
[S]
"...Went on a bit of a trip there, darling?" The light tone is back to her words. Teasing. Familiar, fond.
"Goodness, Bruce, you read people for a living, darling." Selina's chuckle is gentle, and again, familiar. "I'm flabbergasted this all comes as such a surprise. You're very dear to me, heart. As dear as Jervis, or Edward, or Jonathan."
"Just because I can't return those... fuzzy feelings of wanting to be swept away into a forever after doesn't mean that I don't adore you, you dear man. You're a wonderful person, darling, and I like your company."
"That is why I'm here."
[B]
"...Oh." Bruce says, softly. It's all he can say, and he's grateful for when the salads come around. He feels a bit... foolish, now.
Mister Tetch was right, this... wasn't going to change anything, was it?
"Does it, um. Bother you that... I do have feelings of romance towards you, Sel? I kinda, assumed it would, though I'm glad to know you still love me. Or, uh, always did, I guess."
[S]
Mmm... She pauses, mid bite, to think that over, head slowly tilting towards one side, eyes unfocused.
"...I suppose that depends on you, darling. I can't return those feelings, much as... frankly, I'd prefer if I could. I'm not blind, after all, you are a catch. And moreover, a good man."
"But I can't. I've tried that before and I was miserable, trust me, you don't want to leave my life through the route of my attempting to pretend because it would be easier. So... does it bother you?"
"That you will be among my dearest of friends, one with whom I'm quite happy to get physical, and who I'd rather like to keep around if I have a say in it, but... that I will never see you as more than that? Are you going to try and change me, dear?"
"Because if... no, then, no. I'm quite comfortable with what we are."
[B]
"...I may need a bit of time to reconcile that." He admits, softly, rubbing the back of his neck.
Right, food, yes. He can buy time with food. And also should probably eat, worrying does terrible things to an appetite, after all, and he likely needs it. "But, um...."
"That's a me thing, not a you thing. I'm really glad to hear that, where things stand hasn't changed too much and, - well, I obviously like having you around, heh. Yeah, uh..."
"...Sorry for jumping to conclusions. I'm glad to hear it, Sel. I lo-- I care about you a lot, too."
[S]
Selina smiles her bright, radiant smile, and means it this time, leaning to pat Bruce's hand. "Time, I can do. And well, I'm easy enough to call, after all, darling."
"You let me know when I'm welcome, and I'm here, love. That's how it works. And of course, you're welcome to visit, if you call ahead~? Clients don't really like having work meetings interrupted, but that doesn't mean I can't prioritize the company I actually... want."
[B]
He smiles, at that. Want - wanted. Being wanted isn't the worst thing in the world - it's kind of nice, honestly. "Yeah, I definitely will do. The house's been kinda quiet without company."
"I've uh, actually reached out to mister Tetch some, and invited him and Jonathan over for tea if they wanted sometime, I thought... y'know, I should probably make more friends."
"Than just... three friends. That's not a lot of people."
[S]
Selina grins to herself, and chuckles. "We'll make a social butterfly out of you yet, mister Wayne. In a way you like, even."
"I'm sure Jervis darling will appreciate the repose, as well, and Jonathan the opportunity to make you uncomfortable in your own home~ Do have fun, though, they're really lovely gentlemen, both of them." Smile.
"Much like Edward." Her grin grows. "You didn't think I'd forgotten, did you?"
[B]
Bruce flushes in his ears, and near about drops his fork. "Selina!"
"I - look, it's, it's not a good idea. You know why it's not a good idea, he - okay, so he's charming."
"And really cute. And when he lets his guard down and gets enthusiastic about something it's honestly riveting to watch and it's hard to not think about him lately but that doesn't mean it's going to work out, Sel."
[S]
"It doesn't mean it won't~" She sing songs, grin growing even further. Her eyes are alight with mischief, now, as she looks Bruce over.
"Come now darling, I've been dancing around with fools in love who won't admit it for weeks now, I can't tease them, so I have to tease you. And besides~"
"You're rambling. <3"
[B]
Bruce can no longer object. He simply makes a flustered sputter of indignation and dives for the solace of food, ears burning. Okay, so nothing she said is wrong, and it is true that it's as likely to flop as not, but that doesn't mean he should say anything,
"...Okay, fine, yeah, sure." Mumbled. "But I barely know him, Sel."
"I said this last time, I don't know him better just because it's been two weeks, I just.... C'mon, let up, right?"
"Yes, he's... wonderful, and adorable and... and a rogue. And interesting, and a rogue."
[S]
"Aw." She tuts, patting Bruce's hand. "That never stopped you with me~ Just... don't give up on him, darling. Even as just a friend, I do think he truly likes you, and frankly, you deserve more people who do."
"Besides, more time in his company means more time to sneak a look at his butt when he's not looking; I do it to you, only fair."
[B]
"Jesus Christ Selina...!"
But he laughs. The tension is broken, finally. It shakes the anxiety out of his shoulders even as he shakes his head and focuses on the soup now being brought around.
"I've got Marmalade in the Library, you're going to love him. He's as much a mischief as you are, I swear to god...."
[S]
She chuckles faintly. "Good. Someone should keep you on your toes, and it seems fitting it's going to be a cat. I'm honestly... thrilled to meet him." She too, focuses on her soup - adding pepper, and the like.
"...Regarding Edward, darling. Just remember he's as much of a nerd as you are, and... flirting hasn't come from an honest place before, I don't think. Fans, and the like - if it comes at all, I don't imagine he got much behind a desk before."
"You'll need to be earnest. Okay?"
[B]
...Blink.
"Ah... yeah. I'll keep that in min-- I'm not planning on hitting on him, Selina."
He catches himself mid-sentence, flustering. "Not... not anytime soon, anyway."
[S]
"Riiiight. I'll remind you in a few weeks then." She grins a bit, flashing fangs in Bruce's direction, before settling in to eat.
"At least you stopped flirting as The Batman, that was really a terrible call."
[B]
"...Yeah. No, I know. It's a shield, it wasn't a good decision by any means. No more of that."
"...Thanks, Sel. I mean, this is weird, and vaguely uncomfortable but..."
"Kinda nice to know? You think I have a chance, maybe?"
[S]
"I do, if only because he respects you, but - don't rush, darling. And don't see it as an end goal. Edward is a darling man and his company is reward enough, when he chooses to give it enthusiastically."
"That you're getting it is a good sign, but be prepared for it to stop there - and try anyway. Okay?"
[B]
"...Okay."
So, I decided to watch Gotham again
I've watched the 1st season a looooong time ago and stopped at the end of it, I just saw it on Netflix and was like "hey, let's give it another look", you know, for research purposes obviously and it's only been five minutes in the first episode but I'm already so confused !
Let's proceed by steps :
Selina, didn't change from what I remembered, I like her. It's actually logical that she already "looks" like catwoman 'cause cat' s not a vilain who appeared because of the Batman, her mouvements are really nice and I like her design (the gogles ❤️).
Bruce is reaaaally nice, I remember liking the actor a lot and for me it's exactly what Bruce Wayne looked like at 10 years old.
Bullock was one of my favorite, and apparently still is, I just... I don't know I like him a lot. The idea that in the relationship between him and Gordon he is the mentor is kind of bizarre but not bad !
Talking about Gordon, THIS is where I am going to complain. How they picture this character didn't bother me at my first watch because... I didn't know jack shit about the Batman Universe back then, but know that I begin to have quite a bit of knowledge on it and James Gordon being a character that I love dearly... WTF ?????
Like, actually, WTF Gotham ? I mean, maybe it's personnal but for me James is a really sweet people, like, caring and deeply good people, who of course have a temper like everyone and can be angry when he needs to be but otherwise, he's profoundly nice. And the "no smiley face at all" and "cocky remarks" of the Gotham version make me go like WHAAAAAT ???
Maybe it changes afterward I don't know, but right now, I'm not happy with their James Gordon and knowing he's supposed to be the second main character with Bruce, it kinda scares me...
I'll keep you updated, let me know if you have different opinions, if you actually love this version of James and you hate what I said on him 😂 see you soon
