Prompt #24, Extra Credit: Tenebrous

He stared up at the faded sky. Rain fell like darklit glitter as old fluorescent light bleached out the darkened clouds. Sunset was 22 minutes ago. The woman who pulled him out of the wreck- Sif, she’d told him- was off to the side and staring into her phone screen. She’d been staring at it for 43 minutes. Her expression kept getting worse.

He turned his attention back to the streets. Regular nightlife was resuscitated by the falling of the sun but... not out here. Not like this. It was distant. The motel they’d holed up in was closer to the city, sure, but it was still on the outskirts. Just a comfortable distance from being able to haul ass out into the badlands. Just far enough if you’re spooked. Nomad habits. He was fairly sure of that. Frankly it was what astounded him the most. She could have hauled ass sixteen different ways at 100 mph away from him and yet... He looked over at her again. His optics clicked in his head- an annoyance he had quickly gotten used to- as he looked at her screen. Ripperdocs. SelfMed. Searching for everything wrong with him. She’d even tried to get someone to look him over. Not that it mattered much. He didn’t think there was much worth finding. Much worth knowing. Some part of him felt that deep into his core. Maybe even into his circuits. Maybe in the rubber bands that were currently in his arms. But it still confounded him every second that passed.

Something in the back of Dug’s head buzzed as he turned slightly. He frowned and pressed the spot with his palm; a meaningless gesture that he knew wouldn’t quiet it. A short circuit? A failed part? Some transmitter that was calling home? Whatever it was? He couldn’t tell. He didn’t care. For some reason it felt freeing not to. For some reason it felt freeing to let it go. To stare up at the skyline and just feel... Relief. He wished he knew why THAT was his first reaction.

Still. Between the circuits in his head and the rubber bands in his arms, the pain in his head and the fog in his memories, the black space that existed before he woke up in that junkyard with nothing but a seething hatred for that skyline... Sif sat down beside him, deflated, after her search proved more frustrating than fruitful. She limply held her phone as she settled in. “Nothin’?” “Nothin’.” She seemed more frustrated than despaired. Angry. At herself? Him? Useless net diagnosis sites? He did see the cyberpsychosis note. It was fairly believable. But he laughed- the short, light kind when you push yourself up to standing. “C’mon. I think... I’m rememberin’ a place. Don’t even gotta go int’ the city proper.” He jabbed a thumb down a street that ran parallel to the edge. “Migh’ be crazy. Bu’ someone oughta be there tha’ can do some lookin’. If we’re wantin’ tha’ kind of work done anyhow.”

She stared up at him like he was crazy. No specific examples of crazy. Just... crazy. He was getting used to that look. He grinned. They hopped into her truck and prayed for the best.

Making Aegon a rapist was straight up bad and lazy writing.

Let me elaborate.

In the show, the first thing we learn about Aegon as an adult is that he is a rapist. We haven’t seen him yet but still we already know that he is an horrible despicable rapist, especially since Dyana is so young, which pretty much makes him a pedophile too. How could anyone root for a man like that ? And that’s where the problem begins.

Rhaenyra had already been established many times as the rightful heir to the throne in season 1. It has been made obvious that she would make a decent Queen too. In the meantime, it had already been shown that Aegon is not even a good person. He’s selfish, inconsiderate, a bully, and does not act like a prince at all. To put it plainly, he sucks big time and we as viewers already know it. Add what we saw in season 2, how reckless he gets, how he’s an alcoholic immature asshole, how he obviously knows nothing about strategics nor how to rule efficiently, or even how bad he is at high valyrian, and you can’t have anyone tell you in good faith that he would’ve been a better ruler than Rhaenyra.

However, had Aegon not been made a rapist, you would still feel for him even though he is not cut out to rule. Because he knows it too and tried to escape it and he was forced to attend his own coronation . Because this crown that he did not want does not fit him, even though he really tries to show that he is not as worthless as everyone seems to think and he just keeps failing. You would feel for him because the war ,that he has started when he was made an usurper by the people around him, has cost him his son’s life. Because the brother, who is partially responsible for his son’s death has now betrayed him and tried to kill him with dragonfire. Because the injuries he suffered make him look more and more like his father who never cared for him, never loved him and that he definitely hates. Which also probably why he tries so hard to make his mother proud of him and love him but he can’t and his main attempt has left him half-dead, half-burn. Not only that but his dragon, with whom he has the strongest bond known in Targaryen’s, history probably died during this futile attempt to prove himself. The only thing about his Targaryen’s heritage that he seems to care about has been destroyed all because he wanted to prove himself. Because he truly resents his Targaryen’s, his father’s heritage, it’s obvious, just as it is obvious that he didn’t want to marry his own sister but was forced to. It’s completely legitimate of him to want to distance himself as much as possible from everything that is Targaryen related. He is indeed more of an Hightower than a Targaryen, but can you really blame him for that ? Would you not try to fit somewhere else too, if you were in his place ? It’s all absolutely and undeniably tragic.

I wholeheartdely believe that, even if you would’ve root for Rheanyra to be Queen, you woud’ve probably still thought that Aegon, as bad as he is, did not deserves this much pain.

But because he is a rapist, well, he honestly does.

By not trusting the audience to see that Aegon is not a good person, nor a good a king, without having him comitting a literal crime, by making Aegon a rapist, the writers have annihilated any possibilities for an internal conflict regarding Aegon and Rhaenyra. The whole concept of « teams » just goes down the drain because of this lazy, manichaean, writing. And that, my friends, is bad writing at its peak.

god damn i do not post often but can i talk about intentionality for a second?? one second please

i'm gonna be talking about bg3 but this really applies to any fandom space. people will, surface-level, agree that a Black character is not getting enough content compared to their white counterparts because it's. obvious . take wyll, who is several hours behind on voiced lines compared to other origins despite being one of the original five (before they added karlach and whiteified her too but that's another post). it's hard to deny cold hard facts

but then instead of engaging in content that uplifts Black characters and creators, they'll go right back to pumping out more and more content of just their white faves. on its own, it's not actively harmful, but here's what the implication is, whether they acknowledge it or not: yes wyll has less in-game content, yes his writing didn't get the attention it deserved, therefore i don't like him as much. it only perpetuates wyll's lack of content by contributing to his sidelining in fandom spaces

what i would love for fans who claim to be allies to do is to step out of the comfort zone of their initial favorites (which can, in fact, be biased!) and start pursuing content centering Black characters with intentionality. like all things, anti-racism (actively pushing back against racism rather than simply "Not Being Racist") takes practice and effort. you can't really agree with us that wyll needs more content, then in the same breath say that it's because of that that he's not interesting to you . the point was right in front of you doing a jig and you still missed it

i honestly don’t know what to say this, it’s very hateful and we have every right to theorize on what’s going to happen. you have every right to let me know your opinion but to be so hateful and despiteful of a character is very telling and overall concerning.

i personally love henren, they display and tell an amazing lesbian story, as a lesbian myself i love representation! they have great personalities and i can’t wait to see how their family expands.

and with athena i mean, again its just a theory. i’m not taking every shred of athena’s storyline and inserting tommy, i was just sharing my insight.

whether i be wrong or right im going to be happy with the episode because … it’s just a show? i have been here since the very beginning because of peter krause and i stayed because i loved the story these actors are telling.

but yeah, to summarize ; don’t be a hater. this a tv show. everyone is entitled to their opinion and are able to theorize over a tv show. have a great day!

my question is why people love Michael Afton even when he straight up killed Evan with his own hands but at the same time hate Gregory for what was he was (hypothetically. mimic still exists) forced to do to Cassie. like thats unfair sorry. Michael is allowed to be a tragic hero who did bad things (for a bad reason) but Gregory cant be a tragic hero who did bad things (for a good reason)
