Hey there. I recently finished reading 'for the want of a jewel', an original work written by @formlessvoidbeast and I absolutely loved it!

Just like I loved the 'Accidental Warlord' series, a AU based on the Witcher, by @inexplicifics.

Those fics are both an absolute delight to read and they have a few things in common which kind of caused a want of more in me.

Please help me find fics/original work/books/shows... with these tropes (they do not have all the things I mentioned but it would be nice to have them meet several):

Character gets traded for peace to a most likely hostile party (warlord, king, pirates, bandits, just something they expect to be bad or different)

The trade-in-character expects to be hurt/killed/abused/hated/...

The second party they are given too is not aware of the circumstances of the way the trade-in-character had to leave their home

The second party which the trade-in-character expects to be hostile turns out to be not so bad

The trade-in-character finds true home with the party they were given to

The trade-in-character finds true friends/family not made by blood/love/their way of life/... with the people they were given too

Shenanigans (optional as the rest of them, but they would be greatly appreciated)

The Prophecy by Taylor Swift - honestly surprised this is still on there. had it stuck in my head for a couple weeks but i thought that was ages ago. (also a neal song but that's too sad for me to think about / listen to it)

Queen of Hearts by Juice Newton - has been on here for at least six months. i vaguely think there may have originally been a ship reason i started listening to it again, but now it's just that i love the song (it was originally a Jack/Ianto song for me, which tells you how long i've been listening to it. but i do stand by that ship assignation also)

Get To Movin' Again by Brothers Osborne - whatever else i listen to i am inherently a country gal. this is just a classic bop

Down Bad by Taylor Swift - also surprised this one's on there. it was up the top when TTPD dropped, but I didn't think I'd particularly listened to it for a while.

Papa Was A Rodeo by Orville Peck & Molly Tuttle - I went and listened to the og after listening to this one on repeat when the album came out and. i gotta say. no disrespect to the magnetic fields but what the hell were you doing. did you listen to your own lyrics this NEEDS to be sung as a full-hearted swinging country song. luckily Orville delivers on that

and then no one said anything about the fact that if i watched ONE MORE episode tenax pulls a "i'm not angry i'm just disappointed i'm hurt" about scorpus signing with the white faction.

Maybe the truth at the heart of Shadowstruck is the importance of family. Because the most compelling stories in this universe are about what happens when you tell parents that some of their children have no right to their love, care, and protection. It destroys what should be the strongest and most natural bonds of love, and that simple horrible thing leads to all the complicated problems in their oppressive society.

#adventures in writing #shadowstruck #got to thinking about this yesterday while reading something talking about the family's importance to society #maybe something about how a child is under a family's loving care until they can take care of themself #and it made me think about how both of the main story ideas that have sprung from this universe #are about someone who suffers when a father deems them unworthy of love #and that got me thinking about how 'uncle tom's cabin' turned people against slavery #largely because victorians valued the family and the book showed how slavery tore families apart #so maybe i should read 'uncle tom's cabin' just as background #but anyway if i decide to do something with the original version of 'shadowstruck'#the compelling thing is not whatever political intrigue was going to happen (which I never defined)#but the possibility that rinna would cross paths with the family that sold her into slavery #meet the younger sister who was given her name #literally her replacement #meet the father who made the decision not to kill her #but also sold her away from the house to avoid the shame that would have come #from people recognizing her as his child #i can't decide if he'd meet her in a slavery context #and have to live with seeing the life he condemned her to #or if she'd be involved with activists at this point #in a position of at least some level of freedom and safety #and he would see her as a woman with thoughts and feelings #(who looks so much like her mother)#and on some level recognize that he did a horrible thing to her #but how do you begin to go about apologizing or helping her #or in any way mending this horrible unforgivable thing that tore you apart?#the trouble about this universe (like so many of my other ones)#is that there's the potential for so many little stories and characters #that don't necessarily want to resolve themselves into full coherent novels #it gives me so many thoughts that it's hard to settle on a complete story

i've been thinking about agents of fen'harel since yesterday, and out of the characters i already write here, harlan would be the easiest to commit to this cause. he doesn't have any noble aims, but can be radicalized further because his highest value in life is freedom, and in his mind serving and being loyal to someone is freedom too, as long as it's his choice. what that means? well, he would just as much join the inquisition, join briala, join solas, if the person who tried to bring him in offered him a particular thing: consistent basic decency and, i don't know, not siding with slavers and abusers. he's less of a cause person, and more of a person person, you see? hell, he'd commit to being a proper crow again if zevran himself, who's associated with freedom in his mind, showed up and told him he wants to rebuild the crows, but change them. it's not like harlan has moral qualms about his line work, he just hates the organization and those the perpetuate the cycle.

no but seriously whomst will brainstorm this enemies to lovers dramatic fantasy world magic/Great Houses drama with interrupted breeding programs and also probably a/b/o because I want it and even possibly bitching

#my issue is I can't decide who the failed prophet/revolutionary is gonna be #like on the one hand it should be sid because he's the golden boy/chosen one/etc etc #and he'd be the fervent child of god questing to free the people etc. etc.#but on the other hand I also can see charismatic zhenya as the one who was leading the underclass to revolution and bucking fate #and storming the enemy gates and trying to reach freedom...... before sidney/sidney's House capturing him and reinforcing the Plans #that were to take place....#I think my issue is I like sid for the boy revoutionary character (this is the paul to be clear lol)#but I'm not 100% sold on geno/geno's house(family) being the ones to buy into the mystical breeding program/Grand Plan Of Fate that says #that sid and geno need to breed to bring about the next great one or whatever you know?#so to me that means I should go with geno as the failed captured prophet and sid as the son of the Evil House #but uuuuugh I don't know #liasan al ghaib help me lol
