Ooh, a documentary about the cadre of young filmmakers of which Bong Joon-ho was a part? I might have to re-subscribe to Netflix for this.

This Is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone [started 04/04, finished 04/09] *drags my hands down my face until the end of time* I want to meet you in every place I ever loved. I want to meet you in every place I ever loved. I want to meet you in every place I ever loved. I want to meet you in every place I ever loved. I want to meet you in every place I ever loved. I WANT TO MEET YOU!!!! IN EVERY PLACE I EVER LOVED!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4.75⭐️ in storygraph. — Hamnet, Maggie O’Farrell [started 04/12, in prog] I am about 100 pages in and still not sure if I want to keep going or DNF it. idk what isn’t sticking because the writing is beautiful and the pacing is great. And I do care about the characters, I really do. I love the way the author borrows from future grief, it’s what I am enjoying most about this read so far. Maybe I’ll give it 50 more pages and see if it finally sticks.
Tumblr media
23.5 Degrees, GMMTV [started: 03/08, ongoing] As mentioned, I am caught up on eps 3-8. I’ll likely not be able to watch it live in may but I will be keeping up with the series til the end. It’s so lighthearted and charming! Not sure how they managed this, but I am constantly surprised by the character group dynamics. It’s def due to the great chemistry everyone has with literally everyone. I need NEED to discuss the score of this show because it’s IMMACULATE. The celestial themes, from the props all the way down to the music, is so rich. I’m so excited to see how this story unravels. — Devil’s Plan [started: 04/23, ongoing] This is a bestie pick, a show my best friend chose to have us watch on our facetime calls. We are 1.5 eps in and it’s a grower. The first game is hella complex and we’re slowly picking up on what’s happening. The people on this show are incredibly intelligent, so I feel like I have to work extra hard to keep up. It does feel rewarding, I’m hooked.
Tumblr media
Oppenheimer, Peacock [watched on 04/05] I am a self-proclaimed Nolan girlie, I’ll admit it. I do enjoy his work and the many ways he translates time into film. When I wrote this, it had been a few days since I watched it and I still think abt the little moments that blew me away. Moments like the accentuated dust particles, how the coloring of the movie can be an unreliable narrator, and the utilization of a crowded hall stomping their feet to create tension. The last eight minutes still haunts me. I find more value in the technical side of film, but I will give credit when credit is due: every award Cillian Murphy got this season was so well earned. He carried all three hours of that film with such powerful quietude. And lastly, my heart now belongs to Jennifer Lame. Upon seeing her accept the award for Best Film Editing for Oppenheimer, I have come to learn that she also edited Tenet. HER MIND!!! She has such a bright future ahead of her, to be up there with the minds of Thelma Schoonmaker and Anne V Coates. — Yellow Door: ’90s Lo-Fi Film Club [watched on 04/14] This film needs to be studied in film school. It’s incredibly meta in some ways, having renown directors be the subjects, talking about their passion for film. The production being so stylized and the editing feels very reminiscent of Our Beloved Summer, with the way the found footage and the aspect ratios are intertwined with current day quality shots. This film will hit everyone right in the millennial. A true surprise for me is discovering that Bong Joon Ho and I are more alike that I had originally thought. The way he speaks in casual conversation and his story of setting strict rules for their film collection had me hollering because SAME. The most jessi thing he recounted was how all the VHS tapes were labelled. Yellow Door is somehow the opposite of the "doesn’t take itself too seriously" mentality; it’s actually so great that they made the film like that. By fully immersing us with gorgeous cinematography, cheeky editing sequences, and lush music to tug at your heartstrings, it bewitches you into loving film as much as they did. And still do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé [relisten] I’ve given this several good cycles to confirm my first impressions: it’s def one of her most cohesive albums to date and still stands as a spectacular album. This passion project of hers takes such great care and attention to the voices she amplifies. I can feel the hunger, the innate need for her to make this album. If you haven’t heard how this album came to be, I insist you take the time to educate yourselves. It makes the listening experience so much more empowering. Good for her… GOOD. FOR. HER!! Current favs: Ameriican Requiem, 16 Carriages, Bodyguard, Jolene, Spaghettii, Ya Ya, Desert Eagle, II Hands II Heaven, and Sweet/Honey/Buckin’. — Older, Lizzy McAlpine [first time listening] Coming off the heels of my Five Seconds Flat hyperfixation last year, I haphazardly went into Older hoping its a natural progression in production value. I was shocked that it turned out to be a completely different sound. I soon learned that she actually didn’t really like how Five Seconds Flat was produced because it didn’t feel true to her as an artist. Tbh I was feeling a little lost after the first listen but after digesting this new info, I went back into it and appreciated it a lot more. In fact, the third listen was when I realized that it gave off the same energy as Laufey. I’m excited to listen to it again soon. — Stick Season: Forever, Noah Kahan [first time listening] Having stumbled on all the collabs on Alexa earlier this year, Forever was the only new song for me from his latest release. I’m OBSESSED with this song!!!! The way his voice carries the entire weight of every hurt inside me and just takes it away. Something healed in me. I play it in the car every time I leave the house. I cry in the car every time I leave the house. — The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor Swift [first time listening, standard vinyl ed.] I am going to get this out of the way and say that this album is great. Just great. I understand more than ever why she felt the need to make this album. Having only listened to the standard version a couple times and the anthology twice through, I sit here in this kind of… discomfort. And I’m kind of okay with that feeling. But… it pains me that I can’t share this album with some people in my life and it’s largely due to how she depicts her struggles with people with mental illness/addiction. It’s one, if not the biggest, strike I have against this album and by extension, her. Songs cycling in my head: Down Bad, So Long London, Guilty as Sin?, Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?, loml, imgonnagetyouback, Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus, How Did It End?, I Look in People’s Windows, The Prophecy, Peter, and The Manuscript.
Tumblr media
EXPO Chicago [attended 04/13] Yes, I am doxxing myself a bit if you didn’t already know. During college, I used to attend EXPO yearly and occasionally went back long after I finished school. I haven’t attended in a long time, so I made it my goal to attend this year. And I had a blast! My mother tagged along and she’s not one to attend shows like this or art museums in general. It was a beautiful day trip to the city and it was nice to have her company. She mostly trailed behind and took pics of me as I floated around the exhibition hall. I have 50+ artists I tracked on my phone to actively research in my spare time. I sat in on one of the panel talks (ON COLOR), discussing color theory in today’s bipoc landscape. I took so much away from that conversation, it was very charged. I'm kinda obsessed with Alteronce Gumby, I need to do an artist deepdive on his work. — Coachella [watched from 04/12 to 04/14] I work for a big tech company and one of the biggest events to be on standby for is Coachella. I had to be on call for Friday and was backup support for Sunday lineups. Thus, Saturday was the only day I could sit back and relax while watching. My first time lineups included: Hatsune Miku, Peso Pluma, Late Night Drive Home, Jon Batiste, Ateez, le Sserafim, Purple Disco Machine, Bleachers, No Doubt, 88rising Futures, and Latin Mafia. Of all of the performances, I want to take a full deep dive into Ateez and Peso Pluma’s discography in the near future.

Sasha Springsteen
21 y/o ▪︎ he/they ▪︎ bi/queer
》 he's a spiderverse oc but he's reached such catastrophic levels that I'm convinced I created the concept of spiderman
》 his universe is based on slasher films. Think 1980s, Friday the 13th, etc. If he had an animation style it'd be rlly lo-fi and dark
》 he was born October 13th. It's a Friday the 13th ref as well as a ref to Halloween (31 backwards it's very surface lvl)
》 he's closeted both as trans and as bi/queer. He goes by Sasha cuz it's unisex. His pronouns are 90% "he/him" n 10% "they/them"
》 He graduated high school with honors despite being a difficult student. He had plans of going to college and getting an art degree
》 That obviously did not happen. He had to take over being the sole provider for his family after his mom got laid off due to a work related injury
》 he works in construction during the day and as a line cook in a diner at night. He likes the physicality of construction but he has more friends at the diner
》 he lives in a small two bedroom apartment with his mom and older sibling.
》 he's 6 ft. His blood type is A-. He's right-handed.
》 he's a textile/fiber artist ! But he draws. This is what his style looks like
Tumblr media
》 he's based off a wolf spider. As such, he cannot swing from webs like regular spider folk n instead runs. This does mean that his enemies can just hop up a building and escape but it also means he's a tank
》 he really doesn't have to worry abt that tho bc he normally just kills regular humans (his ass is NOT a hero). He did get clipped by a chainsaw once tho
》 one of his enemies is his junior from high school and he only found out AFTER he'd tossed her around (and gave her a major concussion). They got along well because she looked up to him and he joined the art club she started. She's supposed to be his Green Goblin
》 his doc ock is also his venom. His name is Father Alfred Octavious and his symbiote is named Slaughter. Obviously they're gay. At first Octavious just wants to kill Sasha but eventually decides he wants to save them.
》 his enemies are based off of horror movie tropes and genres. GG is based on the monstrous menstruation trope. Octavious is based around religious horror, specifically The Conjuring. Slaughter is based around extraterrestrial horror and Alien.
》 I also think it's fun that Slaughter being hosted by someone "changes" their genre a bit. For example when Sasha becomes Slaughters host, they become a monster from "elevated" horror (think Moder from The Ritual).
》 his MJ is actually PB ! Her name is Pamela Barrymore but she goes by Phoebe or Pammy (if she likes you enough). She works w Sasha at the diner and doesn't know he's Spiderslasher. She views Sasha as a good friend, but has a major crush on Spiderslasher
》 part of it is she feels obligated to like SpSl bc he's always so kind to her and is CLEARLY flirting (Sasha is nice to her because she's his best friend)
》 he doesn't have a "normal" smile. His genuinely happy face is a grimace. He only smiles when he's angry (an animal bearing its teeth). He's very self conscious abt it
》 he's pretty deadpan and monotone in general. Probably akin to a flat affect
》 alleged cannibal
listen u know ur cooked when u develop a whole art style and handwriting for ur lil guy. you cant go back to being normal after that

🔶🔸KIMI NO IRO
Tumblr media
youtube
Nato da un'idea originale della regista, il lungometraggio è sceneggiato da Reiko Yoshida (Ride Your Wave, Violet Evergarden) e in produzione presso lo studio SCIENCE SARU (Inu-Oh, The Tatami Time Machine Blues).
🔶🔸TRIGUN STAMPEDE
Tumblr media
youtube
Realizzato in computer grafica presso ORANGE (Land of the Lustrous, Beastars), questo nuovo adattamento, in chiave moderna e finalmente completo, dell’iconico western sci-fi anni ‘90, è diretto da Kenji Muto (direttore d’episodio in Land of the Lustrous e in Garo: Honoo no Kokuin).
🔶🔸FARMING LIFE IN ANOTHER WORLD
Tumblr media
youtube
La serie andrà in onda dal 6 gennaio 2023 ed è diretta da Ryoichi Kuraya (Tsugumomo) presso lo studio ZERO-G (Science Fell in Love So I Tried to Prove It).
🔶🔸APPARENTLY, DISILLUSIONED ADVENTURERS WILL SAVE THE WORLD
Tumblr media
youtube
La regia e la sceneggiatura sono in mano a Itsuki Imazaki (Hensuki, Ai-Mai-Mi Surgical Friends), che sta supervisionando i lavori in corso presso gli studi GEEK TOYS (Date A Live IV, Hensuki) e SEVEN (Hensuki, Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time: Super Extra).
🔶🔸REBORN TO MASTER THE BLADE
Tumblr media
youtube
L’adattamento della light novel di Hayaken è in lavorazione presso STUDIO COMET (Fairy Ranmaru, Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!) e alla regia troviamo Naoyuki Kuzuya (Bikini Warriors),
🔶🔸 KIZUNA NO ALLELE
Tumblr media
La regia e la sceneggiatura sono affidate, rispettivamente, a Kenichiro Komaya e Deko Akao (When Will Ayumu Make His Move?).
🔶🔸 SAINT SEIYA: KNIGHTS OF THE ZODIAC
Tumblr media
youtube
Questo ennesimo capitolo del franchise vede cimentarsi alla regia il debuttante Daisuke Sako, mentre la sceneggiatura è a cura di Ichiro Okouchi (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, Lupin III - Ritorno alle origini).
🔶🔸 DETECTIVE CONAN: KUROGANE NO SUBMARINE
Tumblr media

The Chats - The Clap
Easy-peasy punk rock album
Loving - If I am only my thoughts
Charming sun-dappled folk-pop, clean, gentle melodies
Steve Spacek - Houses
iPhone/iPad recorded, latino and jazz accented dance/house beats
Ghali - DNA
Total Flop and failed expectations. Mishmash of bland and frivolous lyrics and arrangements.
King Krule - Man Alive!
Alienating, violent, romantic, anguishing, doomed, noir / jazz, post-punk, soul, dubstep, electronic, garage rock, hip-hop
Justin Bieber - Changes
Disappointing comeback - boring r&b with zero sex appeal and cheesy lyrics and all-the-same songs
Guided by voices - Surrender your poppy field
Unusual time signatures, song lengths, and baroque-prog structures - mature rock and sometimes pixie / 80s dreamy
Corrections - Simply Activities
80s new wave and post punk nostalgia - cheesy vocals at times - first half more solid than second
Swim Mountain- If
A lovely mix of indie and funktronica, synth pop, r&b
Caribou - Suddenly
Sly and sofishticated sound design flits between uk garage disco and more - some tracks way less strong than others
Grimes - Miss Anthropocene
Mix “Ethereal nu metal”, ambient, dance, electronic, drum’n’bass, country - is violent and dark but sexy, delicate and dreamy
Porridge Radio - Every Bad
A dissonant lush indie rock sometimes dreamy sometimes dark and ironic with mantra-litany dusky lyrics from peaceful to desperate
Four Tet - Sixteen oceans
Wind instruments, synths and drum patterns gradually fade to calming ambient sounds, intense and meditative but also danceable and powerful
Kamaiyah - Got it made
Short, stripped-down, bubbling keyboards and drum-machine handclaps. NO current rap trends. windows-down bass-rattle record of one person’s confidence in her own sound and charisma
Poolside - Low season
Funk percussions, retro synths, pop and disco influences + indie vocals
Morioh Sonder - Is this psychedelia?
Surf pop and psych rock, dreamy post punk influences, danceable and whimsical
KEYAH/BLU - Sorry, I forgot you were coming
Perfect blend of rap, rnb, experimental pop, dark rhythms textured electronics, intimate tales
TOPS - I feel alive
Pop, radiant and 80s romantic with a contemporary experimental palette
The Chats - High risk behaviour
Classic old-school pure punk / cheerily undemanding fun
NIN - Ghosts V: Together
Buzzy ambient, melodic hooks, emotional palette of sounds
NIN - Ghosts VI: Locusts
Together’s opposite, anxiety-inducing, despairing horns, breathing and devouring sounds.
Roger and Brian Eno - Mixing Colours

The Musical Evolution of Charli XCX
British singer Charlotte Emma Aitchison by the stage name of Charli XCX recently released her new LP Crash and I thought that as Crash created a controversy between her fans I could write about Charli’s musical evaluation through the years.
Tumblr media
Charli started making music when she was 18 and she aimed for the stars. Considering her age, she climbed the ladders fastly and streamed her first LP True Romance. The album didn’t get well reactions from the critics whereas Charli was recognized by the people. She shared her second album which has a mainstream appeal and made huge success placing on Billboards top 10 for a fairly long duration. However, her album doesn’t have layers and something deep to dig it.  The lyrics were pretty shallow (full of cliches) and production wise the album was repetitive. To promote the album she collaborated with the rising pop star of 2010. Although the financial success and recognition, Charli doesn’t look satisfied as she decided to build her music from scratch in 2016.
Tumblr media
With the Vroom Vroom, Charli introduced her take on bubblegum bass, distorted synths, and the concept of lo-fi. Even though it only includes four tracks the EP was highly appreciated by the critics and Charli become a more underground lowkey artist. In this EP, she collaborated with the mastermind of PC music, A.G Cook, and Sophie who are obsessed with virtual digital song production. Their post-modern approach to music nourished the variety of their production. A.G and Sophie mostly reference 90s PC game music, gyaru subculture, and early television aesthetic. Since Charli embraced their style she made a visionary change to shape the new pop. They defined this lo-fi, anti-structurist, bubblegum bass, postmodern music as hyper pop. However, as she stepped into a more niche work field her fanbase declined. Eventually, she raised a committed fanbase where she stripped away similar artists like her. Streaming two different albums, she become the leader of what A.G Cook and Sophie started. Her music become legendary among the LGBT community (as she collaborated with numerous LGBT artists) where she was named as Princess of Pop and made a similar effect like Gaga’s Born This Way album.
Tumblr media
In 2021, Charli made something different and produced her album with his fans through zoom sessions. She stated that Covid-19 is a perfect time to dig into the music and cope with the anxiety that comes with isolation. Her collaboration with her fans shaped the album’s final version from artworks to song titles. This whole journey was recorded by director Bradley BellPablo, Jones-Soler, and Charli XCX herself. The footage become a film titled Alone Together and traveled on the festival circuit. Last week (Friday), Charli released her 4th studio album Crash which I have mixed feelings about it. The album was inspired by the 90s pop bangers and club music. Yet, the tracks feel quite repetitive and simple. This time we don’t have crazy basses and heavy reliance on electro music. Her musical style once again changed with her latest album. I hope she wouldn’t look for a permanent shift to mainstream music. As a huge fan, I would be disappointed by that possibility.
