YuGiOh protagonists tend to fall into two categories:

yomi hellsmile doodle for the yomi hellsmile enjoyers (cracks whip) i remember my friend showing me the rc characters when i was first getting into the game and how i immediately locked onto yomi but didn't say anything about it. then they started warning me about the 'red haired guy' being evil and doing some wild shit anyways my friend made me paranoid that i'd end up hating yomi. i didn't. he's terrible and fucked up and awful and like my second favourite i think

rewatching World Trigger. I forgot how gay it was. Osamu straight up says "hey Yuma. I know that we've only known you for like five days, but I can't help but notice that you aren't doing anything with your life right now. Mind if I borrow it for a bit?"

And then Yuma responds with "while its true that we've only know each other for like five days, your kind yet stubborn nature has compelled me. Sure. Why not? From this moment on my life is yours to do whatever you want with. One condition, though. You have to be my boss" and then throughout the story he occasionally makes these little remarks like "I'd do anything my captain (osamu) asked me to."

Like bro what? I really don't think that Osamu fully realizes the weight of the loyalty he somehow managed to earn from Yuma. I don't think he could realize it. From his perspective he cringefailed his way into b rank while Yuma did all the work. "And now Yuma would kill or die for me" is just not a conclusion that would ever occur to Osamu based on the avaliable evidence.

And like, what's going on here from Yuma's perspective? I get that he was a man on the brink when the story started, pursuing a sincerely suicidal plan, and then said plan failed and he was left with absolutely nothing, but I still feel like there has to be more going on here. He decided that he would follow Osamu through hell and back the very same minute that Osamu asked anything of him at all.

It's like, combat is all Yuma has ever known. He doesn't see any future for himself at all, but he especially can't imagine a peaceful one. But he's not a bad kid. He doesn't go out of his way to hurt people. Osamu has proven to be a pretty decent person, willing to sacrifice himself to save the lives of relative strangers. Maybe, the way Yuma sees it, yeah he's a weapon, but if he follows Osamu at least he'll be a weapon pointed in the right direction. He'll fight because it's all he knows how to do, but osamu would only ever ask him to fight for worthy causes. Y'know?

Anyway. The point is that Yuma accepted helping Osamu as his new purpose in life after knowing him for less than a week, and that's A Lot, no matter how you look at it.

An Overanalysis of Coalescence

(rain code spoilers below)

shoutout to copy abilities in media, gotta be one of my favorite genders. first time i saw yuma sensing aphex use his forte, i knew i was in for a treat.

in fact, the fortes are interesting in general. i absolutely love how well-established the rules and limitations are for each one: fubuki cannot rewind time further after doing so once, halara cannot see living beings in their postcognition, vivia cannot touch anything in spectral mode, desuhiko gets exhausted when he's disguised for too long, and yuma....

wait actually what are the limitations of coalescence?

shinigami tells yuma that, with coalescence, he can only use it if he gets consent from the other party and holds hands with them as he uses it. those are some pretty good limitations, i'd say. they fit very well with yuma's arc about depending on others, too!

except... neither of those limitations are true. makoto has the same exact powers as yuma, yet he thoroughly breaks both of those rules.

first of all, he uses it to copy the handwriting (put a pin in this btw) of the other master detectives while they are unconscious. now, im sure we're all aware of this, but being unconscious is, notably, not giving consent. yet makoto seems to have no issue taking their abilities in such a state. extremely naughty of him.

but, if we look at the scene in the ch 5 bathhouse, he still asks yuma to "give me a hand" like some sort of fae creature pulling a "Your name, please?" trick. perhaps an argument could be made that the person doesn't have to give consent, but you can't use coalescence if they actively deny you. so...

Rule #1 - To use coalescence, you need the other party to not not give consent.

so how about that second rule? you need to hold hands, right? i think that's somewhat true, but yuma is definitely under the misconception that you need to be holding hands the whole time. this is wonderful to me, by the way. how terrible life would be if he wasn't adorably holding hands with his friends... but of course, it's not necessary, because makoto only needed to grasp yuma's hand for a little bit to gain all the benefits of the mystery labyrinth.... except getting his own big titty goth gf. sorry, pal. anyway,

Rule #2 - Hand-to-hand contact is required to activate coalescence, but it doesn't need to be maintained.

we kinda knew this from the start, though didn't we? not only were all the other master detectives able to enter and stay in the labyrinth (put a pin in this too) without keeping a hold on him the whole time, but also yuma could sense the other fortes being used on the amaterasu express without holding hands at all...

wait why the fuck could he do that? also, why does he never do it again??? is sensing fortes a part of coalescence? is it because of his nebulous mind-fuck bond with shinigami still not setting itself in stone? did the writers simply forget he could do that? once he reaches kanai ward, he doesn't sense when any of the other detectives use their abilities unless he's holding hands with them. does the rain cause some interference? what the fuck was up with this? okay, whatever.

Rule #3 - Without holding hands, those with coalescence can still sense when other fortes are being used in close proximity... sometimes.

with that wishy-washy rule set in place, let's unpin the thing about the detectives sharing yuma's access to the labyrinth. shinigami tells yuma that coalescence "works both ways" when used, which is really interesting to me. in this case, it automatically gives the mystery labyrinth access to his friends without yuma consciously doing so, which implies a lack of control over what the other party gains from him when he uses coalescence. but this raises another question: what would the other person gain from him if he doesn't have the book of death's pact?

when makoto uses it on him, yuma gains nothing new, but that could just be because makoto has nothing to give that yuma doesn't have. what happened to people that pre-game number one used coalescence on? did they temporarily gain a weaker version of it? did they get imperceptively better deductive reasoning skills? did they gain some extra trauma? either way, im interested in how this "both ways" thing works when yuma doesn't have shinigami equipped.

Rule #4 - Coalescence works both ways. If the user takes an ability, they will unconsciously give an ability in return.

now it's time to unpin the part where we mention that makoto uses coalescence to copy handwriting, because this opens a whole other can of worms. the whole game, i was under the impression that coalescence only copied fortes. or, at least, i thought it exclusively copied supernatural abilities, since the labyrinth is technically not a forte. then again, desuhiko claims his forte isn't supernatural, so i guess that's on me.

but still... handwriting? that's a very mundane thing to copy. what else can he copy? skills? trades? physical abilities? could he hold hands with neurosurgeon and get the job done just as well? if he held hands with halara and chose to target their fighting skills instead of postcognition, would he, too, be able to take out a hoard of peacekeepers?

i can say one thing almost certainly: he can't just copy over knowledge. as in, if someone knows something about the case, he can't just shake their hand and get the answer transplanted into him. he doesn't even get the knowledge of how the fortes he borrows works- everyone has to tell him the rules. so it seems to be limited to skills and abilities, even though we could theoretically blur the definition of what makes a "skill" and what constitutes as "knowledge."

but that's not all, is it? one of the strangest usages of coalescence we see is when yuma shares fubuki's power. it's never yuma who's rewinding time. it's fubuki, but yuma instead gives her a support buff in stamina by sharing the burden of her exhaustion debuff. and while he never seems to be nearly as tired as she is (cowardice from the dev team for not giving us suspiciously flushed and sweaty sprites for yuma like they do with fubuki), from this alone we learn that coalescence doesn't just copy abilities, but it copies... feelings too?? does this mean he could reasonably act as a healing salve to anyone who's exhausted- not just forte users- by sharing it with them? at the very least, he can share the burden (or boon possibly?) of any side effects or drawbacks of someone else's forte. that just makes me curious about what'd happen if he used coalescence on someone who's forte has a drawback of making them horny. who said that.

Rule #5 - Coalescence copies fortes, skills, supernatural abilities, and can even lessen the side effects of abilities through sharing.

edit: i forgot about one more rule, but the game outright tells you this one and it's indisputable, so i won't go into any deep analysis. still, for the sake of completion:

Rule #6 - Coalescence can only hold one ability at a time. Copying a new ability will automatically overwrite a previously stored one.

and that's it, i think. these are all the rules and limitations of coalescence. absolutely busted ability too, especially in a world with heavy limitations like melami's or zange's. but with that in mind...

why did shinigami lie?

or, well, i guess a better question would be "why was she mistaken about its limits?" my theory is that number one lied to her about those limitations on purpose.

we all saw how makoto used coalescence- with lots and lots of trickery. while his grand scheme through the whole game plan could not have been done alone, he still uses people quite extensively, especially the detectives.

i used to always wonder if number one even used coalescence, because there's something real ironic about it being the ability of Number "I Work Alone" One von RainCode. knowing what i do now, i think he used it like makoto- tricking people into grabbing his hand and using their skills as a means to an end. he never considered it "working together" because it truly isn't.

but when he forms a pact with shinigami, he tells her the rules of coalescence. and he lies. he lies by making a set of rules that'd force his amnesiac self to depend on others, and i genuinely love that.

yuma is the KING of bf selfies. but he doesn’t strike me as a good texter (or rather, he’d prefer calling). so to make up for it, i think he’d send you random pics of him throughout the day. pjs, dance practice fit, concert fit, going to grab lunch at the convenience store fit, EVERYTHING.

Fic idea:

Where Yuma comes from, Trion sharing could be considered an intimate act, depending on the circumstances, almost like a claim or a marriage. However, on the battlefield, it's nothing more than to pick a comrade up.

So when Osamu suddenly asks him to share trion, he's flushed and embarrassed, telling Osamu that he pretty much asked Yuma for his hand in marriage.

Embarrassed, Osamu waves him off, telling him it's for training purposes.

But it slowly becomes a habit, sharing Trion together.

Till it becomes a thing they do, a unconscious habit, unaware that Trion sharing also ties to compatibility with your partner.

The stronger the feelings, the stronger the sensations, till it sometimes feel like their love sick fools.

Shivering at their first transfer, Osamu telling Yuma how cold it feels. Yuma laughing. "I don't produce much body heat."

Till every touch of their pinkies, Trion transfered, mingled, till it became a warm stream of comfort, safeness and a sense of selfless.

If Osamu had to describe Yuma's Trion is was, independent, strong, protective, and so, so warm.

Till pinkies weren't enough,to yumas feet sitting in Osamus lap, face shoved in his phone, mindless scrolling, only to focus on the sensation of Trion flowing through his legs.

Hes always felt the engery of his own Trion that hasn't stopped flowing for years but this, this was different. He'd never be able to explain it. It's was just so,,,Osamu.

Yet, neither have them have realized it runned deeper than the Trion.

But when their teams get mingled for the away missions, forced away from each other for 2 weeks in the first phase of the testing, why is that feeling still there?

When they haven't seen, heard or touched each other in 2 week?

And why, does his own Trion feel so..lonely?

One interesting thing I’ve recently noticed is that each of the three Yugioh anime that followed Duel Monsters (and honestly even the ones that have followed after those) have each presented essentially a ‘response’ to the original Yugi/Yami dynamic with each of their main characters.

With Judai, the story of GX essentially posits: What if instead of Yugi and Yami being separate characters, they basically started the story as ‘Yugi’ and ENDED the story as ‘Yami’. It’s actually pretty funny comparing just Judai’s character designs and realizing that in Season 4 he’s pretty much just Yami-Yugi/Atem at this point XD

With Yuma and Astral, ZEXEL basically revisits the old Yugi/Yami dynamic but explores it from a different angle, particularly with both being far more distinct and separate characters from the beginning.

With the Yu-boys, ARC-V seems to have been doing… something.

And with Yusei, 5Ds pretty much goes ‘Hey what if we just ditched Yugi altogether and made Yami the main character from minute one all the way to the end?’ I mean no judgement, but if Yusei Fudo is your favorite Yugioh protagonist, then I am willing to bet that at least a few moments in DM you were probably thinking ‘Man, Yami-Yugi is so cool. I wish we could see him more outside of duels. Like… all the time.'

Also I haven't seen any VRAINS yet but from what I've heard it sounds like Playmaker and Ai are something along the lines of 'What if Yami was ACTUALLY evil' and 'What if we cribbed a few notes from a Puzzleshipping slash-fic'

So…allow me to ramble about my fic for a while.

Home is Where The Heart is (Or HIWTHI for short) was the first fanfic of Raincode I ever wrote. As someone who ONLY specializes in sickfics, I usually write one per fixation targeting my fave every single time. But the moment I saw how pathetic Yuma was throughout the game, I was practically ready to get to work the minute I finished the game in July 2023, I practically wrote down the summary on an hour plane flight I took.

Truth be told, I was actually super nervous to write this fic. I would be the third person in the fandom to write a sickfic of this series, two others sadly beating me x’D So I was super nervous since the fandom was still so new. I feared I wouldn’t write any of these characters well enough. So before I wrote it, I played the game a second time and tried to study everyone’s personalities, mannerisms, and tried seeing how they’d think and react to a mildly drastic situation.

When I started to write it for the first time I got writers block quite a lot… Especially with Fubuki. I mostly got my ideas for each of the master detectives individual mission chapters whenever I took outdoor walks. (mainly because writing anything not related to the sick whump itself is harder for me xD so Vivia’s chapter was the easiest to write lol)

But once I was finished I was very excited to post it. And I never thought it would do as well as it did! In a way, this fanfic is what truly established my place in the fandom. It defines me as well as what kind of content I enjoy doing. I’ve never had my writing get this much attention before. And it made me so happy… ;w;

And now it even has an illustrated comic based off it. To think my silly little idea I came up with last summer, would find such a place among the community… It practically defines my place among the RC fandom.

i posted this poll as a joke but i got a little miffed at the makoto character assassination in the notes/ask box so now im giving my reasoning of why i think this fight is a hard 50/50 and not just an easy makoto win:

(btw, this isnt out of anger. im genuinely having a lot of fun ranting about this silly topic because i love these two clowns)

Rage: the biggest pro-makoto argument people had was that he was filled with pent up rage, which... okay, but i actually don't think it's that simple. more than anything, makoto is frustrated with himself. not his original, and, hell, not even yomi. the only reason he started beefing with either of them is because both were putting kanai ward in danger trying to reveal the homunculus info. otherwise, his original is a non-issue and yomi is nothing more than a nuisance. in the game, when makoto's carefully concealed emotions begin to trickle out, he is far from angry. he's sad, helpless, and broken. he's close to crumbling under the pressure of his own tower of lies, and he's not the contained rage beast yall think he is 😭 makoto has the conviction to fight with his all, but i genuinely don't think he's going sicko mode when angry.

yuma, on the other hand, is ROYALLY PISSED at makoto. this is the chapter 5 bathhouse!! makoto just put him in zombie hell and spent the last couple hours taunting yuma with the corpses of his friends! yuma may be a doormat but he's literally shown himself capable of snapping in anger before! if anyone here is falling into a rage-filled frenzy, it is not makoto

Stamina + Strength: all im saying is that one of these characters spends most of his time doing legwork, running from cops, and doing QTEs with a small level of physical competence, and the other one takes baths while plotting in his fancy penthouse all day

Strategy: makoto 100% has the edge in this one. he still has number one's memories, and yuma is also a little stupid. i can see makoto fighting using trickery. sand-in-the-eyes level stuff, yknow? i dont think number one himself was actually trained in close combat though. he's a shut-in who is always on the run from criminal syndicates, so i'd imagine most of his skillset lies in how to stay out of fights rather than win them. still, im sure makoto can come up with a few ways to put himself at an advantage, as long as he can take/avoid enough hits.

Patheticness: this is a joke stat but i feel like people forget that makoto is JUST as pathetic as yuma is. he's just better at hiding it.

Power of Friendship: also a joke stat i think it has no actual bearing on this fight lmao. though yuma may be motivated by the "deaths" of his friends.

that being said, i still think makoto could win! i actually fully expected these poll results! but i also think it depends on whether or not yuma's raw determination beats out makoto's trickiness... and even then, they're both coming out of this looking utterly beaten and bruised. anyway if you got this far, thanks for reading my manifesto on this shit lmao

TFSP Translation Progress Update: Shark Nasch's Lines

ding Shark's all done! After finishing up Yuma's last two stories (I'd done his first two as I was prepping my announcement video for this whole thing), I just wrapped up re-translating Shark's story events in TFSP, and it's kinda neat how Yuma's gets you to this bit from his POV while Shark's story events get you here from his POV after he comes to terms with his past memories (so the "it's been ages" line was in both stories, just a little differently lol; these are from his last event). And while I wish they'd coded in Nasch (and the other Barians' Barian forms) so he could turn into him in these bits, to the game's credit, Shark's sprite early into his story has him without his Barian necklace, but he gets it once he starts accepting that he's Nasch.

I've already worked on Shark's in-duel dialogue from my work on that video, so I'll be giving those a once-over next and then working fresh on his bio, which I thought I'd already done. That'll then do it for this go-around of TFSP work as I jump back into GX and finalize my subs for episodes 122 and 123; I'll likely put up a little video of some of Shark's story translation and in-duel lines once done, so stay tuned!
