so the new little mermaid guidebook is like REALLY fucking good and cool and y’all should read it, it SLAPS, but like. the one thing that got me fucking spiraling is that they implied that like. the mermaids have sea creatures as familiars???

which is a cool idea but makes me question so many things like. is flounder ariel's familiar??? how does that work??? more importantly how the fuck is she able to leave him in the ocean and go live on land???? what happens to him when they separate, what happens to her, does she just cease having a familiar as a human, would– OH MY GOD IS SCUTTLE HER FAMILIAR????

It looks to me like Oola, a mermaid from the Disney Fairies books (in bright green-yellow), might have sneaked into the Guide to Merfolk for the Little Mermaid 2023.

A while back I ordered the Guide to Merfolk tie-in to The Little Mermaid (2023), and it arrived today. I really like the illustrations, particularly the ones that showcase the underwater environments of the Seven Seas.

...I really hope that those illustrations will in some way make it into the actual movie, but I’m kinda afraid that the focus will be on the (mainly above water) story and not the underwater worldbuilding.

So I guess... if anyone watches the movie before me, could you tell me if there’s a lot of worldbuilding and underwater visuals?

SOME NEAT LITTLE MERMAID FACTS FROM THE BOOK I GOT : ( they are canon for my muses )

According to my book I got about the movie, which is mostly just like a 'research book about merpeople', it says that sirens have different types of song — luring, crashing boats, healing, good luck, shark luring, aaand sleeping songs. Along with just love songs to make people like them. so when sebastian reprimands ariel for using her 'siren song' on eric on the beach , she literally resurrected him from drowning with a healing song.

They also really love the moon bc of the whole tide thing -- they hold festivals for each phase of the moon &* sun, mostly in different regions. they have really cute traditions &* ways of greeting each other in each of the seas , which are all ruled by one of the 7 daughters.

For context left to right , Karina rules the Saithe, or Dark, sea where it's very cold and mostly covered in ice. she's very reclusive &* prefers animals, &* is known for being very decisive &* leaning on her intuition. (Arctic esque) Ariel is the ruler of the Carinae Sea where it's very warm and tropical, though technically she lives in Triton's domain &* lives in his palace . (Caribbean islands esque) She's very sensitive &* kind hearted , and obsessed with reconnecting with the human world. she is renowned for her siren song strength. Indira rules the Brinedive sea , where it is shallow , sunny , &* hot . (Indian-esque) she is said to be the most generous of her sisters and leads with kindness. she is an excellent debater &* diplomat . Caspia rules the Apneic sea , where the waters are 'brackish &* murky' , with rocky islands &* sometimes snow. ( Europe-esque. ) She's selfless &* serves others before herself. She rarely leaves except for mandatory gatherings with her family. she is very protective of coral. Tamika rules the Fracus sea , where the water is clear and sunlit and filled with coral and bright fish. (Africa esque) She is the most tactical of the sisters and rules with an iron fist. She's a strong warrior and once wrestled a tiger shark into submission. Mala rules the Chaine sea , where the waters are full of islands , shoals , and cays . (Asia esque) She is fiercely protective of her waters and the coral in them. She used to send messages to humans before her father forbade it. Perla is the ruler of the Piton sea , where the waters are temperate , but very , very deep . ( i don't know what to compare this one to honestly. mid ocean horrible creatures are down there area. seriously -- they say sea dragons fuck around down there. ) She is the most charismatic and radiates warmth &* charm.

Apparently some mermaids get superpowers. Especially Royal mermaids. Like mindreading or extra skills musically like being able to play an instrument endlessly without tiring. ( there's a legend that one of ariel's sisters was kidnapped for her ability to play the harp endlessly &* triton straight up tsunami'd the town to get her back , but she played for like 5 days straight before that. )

there's actually a few legends on the book that every mermaid knows about ! there was a gay one and it made me scream. went along the lines of , a mermaid wanted a fisherman dead bc he was overfishing and dumping in the ocean , so she got a magic sharp shell that will 'take his heart' but couldn't bring herself to kill the guy , so she asked her merman friend , who agreed bc he's all cold and heartless. he goes to kill the fisherman , but they lock eyes &* fall in love instantly &* hAHA HE TOOK HIS HEART GET IT

Ursula is tridents younger sister and responsible for the sea queens death, though she did not kill her on purpose nor really intend for her to die , but she did nothing to stop it. She impersonated the Sea Queen so she could go fuck with a boat that was annoying Ursula , then she got trapped in a net &* the real sea queen came to free her , but in the mix up , the sea queen was harpooned instead of ursula . Ursula was thus banned from the castle and from seeing her neices .

Also, Ursula is the only known octopus hybrid.

Geminate Invoker (Barbarian Archetype)

The barbarian class has had an element of the supernatural in it as far back as Advanced Player’s Guide, with these warriors channeling their rage into the elements and invoking the shamanistic power of totem spirits.

Today, we’re going to look into an archetype that taps into that spiritualist side a bit more.

Tied to the Rivethun tradition of using one’s own transitional aspects to help bridge the gap between material and spiritual, the geminate invokers do not rage the way other barbarians do, instead entering a more tranquil trance and inviting spirits into their bodies, enhancing their reactions and deadening pain to avoid and endure much, as well as tapping into the power of those spirits in other, interesting ways.

Much like other Rivethun practitioners, these warriors are all in a state of between-ness. Some might be transgender or nonbinary. Others might be halfway between two worlds such as half-elves, half-orcs, any geniekin or planar scions, and other such states. However, while shamans use Rivethun practices in their magic, the power of these warriors ties more into the totems we are already familiar with in the barbarian class.

That’s right, this archetype plays with the totem rage powers in a way that the totem warrior “archetype” never did. (For those that are unaware, the totem warrior barbarian was an “archetype from APG back when the concept was introduced, and literally granted no different abilities whatsoever. It was just something you could tack on if you chose to take a totem rage power). So you can imagine my excitement in getting to delve into this topic today!

These invokers are a bit more cerebral than other barbarians, learning more skills. What’s more, their battle fury is focused less on the harm they can do, and more upon enduring and avoiding harm. They can even still use their cerebral skills in this state. However, they notably will not commit to a totem.

Additionally, these warriors can accept a haunt spirit into themselves to attempt to quell some or all of it’s fury, though this is not as efficient as when a medium does it.

The real meat of this path, however, comes when they begin to channel totem spirits when they enter their trance, effectively gaining a lesser totem power of their choice. However, they have trouble channeling spirits that are morally opposed to them, or those that would not be present in an area for whatever reason. Over time and mastery, they gain access to the greater abilities of the totem as well.

Being able to pick a totem each time you rage, treating those sets of rage powers like power suites is everything I wish the totem warrior archetype was back in the day, so I highly recommend this archetype if you wanna play around with those. However, the rage of these invokers grants no bonus to strength, so you’ll likely want to build for defense and tanking instead, and tailor you totem choice when you trance to the situation.

The geminate invoker is a perfect opportunity to explore the spirits associated with the various totems. What sort of beings are they? How does the warrior’s personality change when they invite them inside? The interactions they might have with the spirits can add a lot to the character.

Like all mustelidals, Blue Stripe is a tenacious warrior of an agathion that strikes hard against evil wherever they find it. However, what is interesting is that they do not wield their fists, but rather a large greatsword, and have a knack for speaking to nature spirits, perhaps a relic of their previous life, when they were a spiritual warrior.

Kazhao of the Tranquil Waters is a famed champion among merfolk, her skill with a trident unmatched. She even calls upon the spirits worshipped by her people to aid her, becoming ferocious and powerful in such a state.

Oten, a sun spirit, and Mani, a moon spirit, have a long history together, and they bicker constantly, much to the chagrin of Kuva, the invoker warrior who got saddled with both of them as their patron. Getting them to put aside their differences and work together is their constant struggle.

Whether you want them to stalk, to hunt, or to devour your little protagonists (mind you, the monsters are the real protagonists of the story, hehe), I want to see a month dedicated to the beauty of the Ugly and Horrible! All things monster are welcome—art, writing, any kind of showcasing a monster! No matter how cruel or how obscene you like it—now's the time to show it off! ♥

I have prepared a list of monsters & prompts for your guidance, however, if you'd rather do a different monster or a different prompt, that is totally fine! If you prefer to stay private and not have your post reblogged to this blog, that is totally alright, too! This is merely for fun and giggles, and I welcome everyone who wants to challenge themselves this upcoming October to use this list if they want!

The codfather dives into a crevasse, deeper and deeper, past where the sun's light reaches, with only a froglight as a guide. There has to be plenty of ores only he and his sister can reach down this deep, surely. As he runs along the walls in the freezing water he finally sees something glimmer in the darkness. Diamond, embedded into the deepslate.

As he surveys the area he finds the stone oddly warm, but it was probably of no concern, right? He takes his pickaxe and begins to break away the stone from the diamond, though, the entire face starts crumbling. A final strike shatters the entire wall and debris flies back up in a jet of boiling water, before the current sucks it all down into an abyss.

The codfather barely manages to avoid joining the rubble by clinging to the mouth of the newly formed tunnel. He reaches for his lantern, but realizes it's no longer the only point of light as colourful stars seem to move about the abyss. Just as he unwisely leans into the cave to get a closer look it gazes back up.

"Who are you?" The strange merfolk asks. "And why are you breaking into my home?"
