Characters - Grian/Joel ft Jimmy, Scar & Bdubs Words - 1,520 Time - 45 mins Content - College AU

Grian looked himself over in the mirror for the twelfth time, meticulously looking for a flaw or hair out of place. Normally, he wouldn’t bother with unimportant things, but one didn’t go out with some rich guy every night, so he had to make an impression. He gripped the edge of the sink, pressing his lips into a thin line, almost desperate to find something wrong. He hadn’t even eaten anything to make sure he had nothing in his teeth, and for once, he had been going to sleep at a reasonable time for a week to avoid getting bags under his eyes. He had brushed his teeth three times in the morning, twice in the afternoon, used mouthwash and floss in between to avoid bad breath. He even showered twice, once when he woke up and one recently. And his clothes, although not new, he had washed and ironed them and kept them pristine the day he convinced Joel to go on a date. 

Okay. Alright. Fine. He was doing too much. But this was important. Very important. Because Joel had money, and Joel seemed fun, but more importantly, Joel had money.

He could hear his flatmates making a loud mess outside, the walls were thin. They could probably even hear him overthinking and how desperate he was. 

When his hand slipped from the sink, he finally snapped out of it. He grabbed his phone, checking himself on the room a final time before stepping out of the bathroom to the noise. He walked the corridor to the living room, plopping himself on the couch as Jimmy, Scar and Bdubs played like they were at the Olympics. With practice, he turned out their screaming and screeching and cheering, turning his attention to his phone. Twenty past six, ten more minutes until Joel would arrive. He unlocked his phone and decided to finally answer messages, freezing when he came face to face with his chat with Joel. 

Something so small like a wink, it was just a semicolon and a close parenthesis, yet it made his heart and stomach overturn like he’d never been on a date before. 

He slid his thumb across the screen to exit the chat, glossing over the unanswered messages. His peace, however, lasted a total of half a minute, because the room suddenly plummeted into silence, and Grian knew it was bad. Very bad. 

“Sooooo,” Jimmy said first. Grian glanced at the top of his phone, subtly looking at Jimmy who was facing him, no doubt grinning like the idiot he was. “Excited? Nervous? Do you want us to follow to make sure this random guy doesn’t break your heart?”

“Oh! Yes, we should!” Bdubs jumped in, which at least assured Grian of the thought that they had somehow discussed this between them. 

“Oh, god, no, don’t you dare!” He looked up from his phone, glare instantly finding Jimmy. He glanced at the other two, finding matching, bright and sparkly eyes. If time travel ever became available, he would pay whatever it was needed and stop his past self from flatting with this trio. “Plus, you three, against him? No chance. No chance.”

“Oh, come on, G. You don’t have to hype him up!” Scar said, and the other two nodded. Dogs. They were all dogs. And Grian so, so regretted not having moved in with Cleo and Scott. Maybe next semester. Yeah. That was a plan. He would do that as soon as he could. “Also! You need to remember, Joel is shorter than us. And we are three against one. It would give you enough time to run away, at least.”

Grian scoffed, turned his head away as he got up. He walked to the kitchen, cringing when he heard them standing up, footsteps following him. As calmly as he could, he grabbed a glass and poured some water into it, trying to calm his nerves or try to not throw the water on their faces. 

They continued to talk, loud voices that he made white noise. Then his phone pinged, and he quickly grabbed it, smiled at the notification. Nonchalantly, he walked out of the kitchen then out of their flat, quietly closing the door behind him. He speed-walked the side of the building to the street, a sigh of relief escaping him when he found Joel’s car parked right there. Without thinking or waiting for him to get out, he jumped in, rapidly clicking his belt on. 

Joel laughed, “Couldn't wait to see me?”

“You have no idea,” he joked with an eyeroll. 

Soon enough, they were driving off.

Turned out, Joel was more than a pretty face. Joel was a pride monster, boastful and loud, and he’d probably fit right in with Jimmy, Scar and Bdubs. That aside, Joel liked showing off, and Grian couldn’t even be mad, because Joel had reasons to show off. After yet another strike and loud cheer, Grian wondered if he somehow rigged the whole bowling lane. Joel had that kind of money, and liked to spend it like that too.

“Aw, don’t look so salty, Grian. I’ll buy you some ice cream to cheer you up.” Joel giggled, but his lips were twisted into a smirk, and even that was… Ah, it was whatever. He smiled back at him, eyebrow raised as Joel grinned innocently. 

“How generous.”

“Plenty.” 

They grabbed their empty plates and cups, throwing them away as they exited the lane. The place was full and bustling, and Grian was glad to have reserved their time. In an act of bravery, Grian leaped and grabbed Joel’s hand, relaxing when he noticed him blush. He smirked to his surprise. 

“Wouldn’t want to lose you in the crowd, now, do we?”

Joel blinked, then huffed, smiling, “Sure, sure. Just admit you want to be by my side. I don’t mind.”

“You’re as rich as you’re self-centered.”

“Aw, you think I’m charming?”

Grian scoffed, but they walked hand in hand, and that was enough to counter his pounding heart.

They walked about in the mall, chatting about their courses and their friends, giggling about work and their flatmates. One time, he yanked Joel from walking into a stand, their bodies crashing as his back hit the wall. They stared at each other, blinking a couple times before breaking into a fit of giggles. Their hands stayed with each other, shoulder to shoulder, and it was nice. Very nice. Grian almost thought he should’ve asked him out sooner. 

At some point, they stopped on some grassy bit with bean bags and chairs, fake grass under shelter, probably somewhere for kids to play but there were none so they sat down. They shared a bucket of cotton candy, talking about all the annoyances of life. Usually, Grian kept them bottled up for nights with a drink, but Joel’s petty suggestions and cute faces made it worth it. At least he was letting it all out, which was good to an extent. And Joel seemed to trust him enough to share too, stories he promised to keep secret even if Joel hadn’t asked that of him. It felt like a teenage dream, talking and laughing with his crush so openly. 

Grian got brave again, heart beating on his throat, he ripped a piece of cotton candy while Joel was talking, then raised it to him but not fully to his mouth. It was a risk, a big one, and he pushed down the trembles when Joel stopped talking, looking at him with curiosity. 

Joel’s lips brushed the side of his finger, his face lighting up in heat as Joel kept eye contact before leaning back, cotton candy on his tongue. He watched him pull his tongue back, closing his lips into a smile. He swallowed, eyes flickering between his bobbing Adam’s apple and lips, back and forth before looking up to his eyes. Joel stared back, amused and content, almost mischief in his eyes. 

“You wanted me to shut up so badly?”

He shook his head. He barely heard the words, once again fixated on his lips. It was too early. Much too early. 

Oh, whatever. 

Grian pushed himself up, getting on his knees with a hand on the fake grass, hovering above him before pressing his lips on him. A hand crept to the back of his neck, reassuring as Joel did the actual kissing. Joel smiled as he did, tilting his head slightly to be more comfortable. It was just a couple seconds, but long enough that Grian would never forget. 

Grian jumped back in fright when he subconsciously recognized the gasps. He turned and looked up to see the troublemaker trio looking at them with wide eyes. Still at a distance, but quickly getting closer. His head snapped to the side when Joel grabbed his hand, the other grabbing their cotton candy bucket, quickly tugging him to his feet. He got up clumsily, wanting to yell at his friends but his attention was on him, on his mischievous, sparkling eyes. 

“Whe—”

“C’mon, my car’s faster.” Joel grinned, and Grian knew he was in good hands.

Day 51 of 366

I was able to carry out the necessary duties before I officially left. 🎉 I was able to send my intent to resign last last week. However, I want to personally pass the resignation letter to my principal, though her request is to receive the document via email. 📧 My research group was able to present, and while the result was fascinating, we have to carry over the things that we haven't accounted for in this upcoming term (research-related). 🧑‍🔬 While I was having this excitement run through my veins, I knew that they would be able to answer the questions flawlessly, sharing their research journey with their intended audience, the panel members. 🌐

I am planning to keep my employee ID as a souvenir that I became part of this amazing institution that shaped my professional career. 🏢 I met amazing people; clueless students (at first), and enthusiastic colleagues. 👩‍🏫👨‍💼

Itto streams with his friends late into the night. When you text him, sweet and loving and funny as always, what would he do except respond?

Wrong choice.

On any given TITZ stream, there’s always something going wrong. Thoma’s green screen falls, Zhongli’s mic breaks so badly it sounds like a historical artifact, Childe makes too many sex jokes and falls out of his chair miming penetration… nothing is ever smooth sailing. Itto is well aware of this fact, and regularly contributes to the chaos in every way possible, whether it be screaming like a little girl when the rat gets him in Cheese Escape, conducting Pavlovian mind experiments on Childe, all the way to doing full glam makeup looks on Thoma in the dead of night.

He never thought it’d be unintentionally.

It’s 3:47 AM, and the group is in a lull, scrolling on their phones and occasionally sharing some random thing they found on their Twitter timelines. Thoma’s started playing the full Hannah Montana discography in an attempt to start a digital rave, Childe is playing chess with an online bot (subsequently raging every time he loses), and Zhongli is crocheting while trying to give him pointers.

“Rook to E4.”

“No.” He moves his queen to the other side of the board, which instantly gets trapped by the opposing bishop. A whine escapes his lips as he slams his desk in agony, groaning and rocking back and forth like he’s just experienced the greatest tragedy of his lifetime.

“I told you so.”

As Ordinary Girl comes to a close, He Could Be The One blares through Thoma’s computer, and he shoots out of his chair to dance, encouraging the others to join. They all sit and watch as he breaks into a sad excuse for a disco boogie that looks more like an eighty-nine year old man with scoliosis trying to pick apples. Itto looks down to his phone and smiles, staring at a message from none other than you.

You, his old girlfriend from college. You, who made him feel the happiest he’s ever been. You, who parted ways with him after graduation and you, who started going out with him again after you met in the heart of Inazuma by chance.

You, who makes his cheeks flush red and his smile reach his ears as he opens your contact. It’s not much, but it’s enough to make Thoma’s retirement home moves fade from his mind.

“Huh? Oh. Hi. Hey there.”

“Why are you grinning maniacally at your phone?”

He flushes and stammers for an answer. “Umm, I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and saw a photo of your mom in a bathing suit. LOL.”

Childe scratches his head. “My mom has Facebook?”

“Yup. She friended me right back as soon as I requested, little boy. I’m about to be your stepfather…” he trails off, watching as his phone buzzes to life with an audio message from you. “Oh em gee. Oh my god. Your mom just DMed me back. Hold on, I gotta look at this.” Itto’s scrambling for a way to excuse how he shoves his headphones off and clicks rapidly for the mute button, turning his back to the camera as he listens to your voice ring through the speaker, throwing out some gross cheesy pick-up line with a million kissing noises that, horrifyingly so, make his heart flutter.

With surprising speed, he lifts the microphone to his mouth to respond with an equally corny voice message back. “I’ll see you there shnookums, my little pookie bear, my sugarplum pumpkin cupcake princess.” A loud string of cartoon kisses follow and a slight laugh escapes him at the thought of you listening to his antics. He’s smitten. Wholly, entirely, truly consumed by this stupid little crush on you. Is it even a crush anymore, if you reciprocate? It doesn’t matter. He’s here in the middle of the night, smiling like an idiot at the sound of only your voice. Nothing else can explain why he’s acting like a lovesick teenager again, just like when he first met you at freshmen orientation for new LHU students. Your laugh, your smile, the way you looked at him like he was the only other person in the universe. Not looked — look. He’s lucky enough to have you and your loving gazes back.

After Itto clicks send, he leans his head back in his chair with his stupid smirk still on his face, the idea of you laughing at his dumb response running through his mind. The complete radio silence from his friends makes him pause, though. Before, he could hear the faint resonation of The Best of Both Worlds through his discarded headphones, but now it’s like there’s no one there. And his chat is racing at a million miles an hour.

His spine tingles like someone poured cold water on him, slowly putting his headphones back on and switching to Discord to see the shocked faces of his friends staring back at him. Minus Zhongli, who’s still knitting his blanket.

“You seemed a little enthusiastic talking to my mom, huh, Itto?” Childe teases, his jaw half open in shock.

“Who was that? Please? Itto? You can tell me. We’ve been friends since forever. Please.” Thoma’s doing a stupid pouty face at the camera, trying to force his eyes to water for dramatic effect like the dumb emoji he always sees on Twitter.

He feels like killing himself on live. Burying his face in his hands, he mutters out your name so faintly he’s sure none of them will hear. But Zhongli does, and he repeats it to the other two, whose faces light up as they make random animalistic noises. They were there for the entirety of your relationship, but still. It’s embarrassing. Totally not like he cried to them for days when you broke up after graduation, what with him going back to Inazuma and you off to your next big job offer all the way in Fontaine.

“Itto, why didn’t you tell us? We’re your BFFs. Forever and ever and ever. Five-ever. I’m hurt.” Childe whines into his mic, still elated at the idea of him getting back with his university lover.

“Because I knew you guys would do this…”

Thoma grins as he leans in close. “Can you give us more info on your date with your ‘sugarplum pumpkin cupcake princess’?”

Itto hangs up in a flurry of laughter and embarrassment.

Characters - Etho/Joel Words - 1,040 Time - 45 mins Content - Farm AU | fluff | suggestive comments

Etho was getting real tired of potatoes. Really, really tired of potatoes. Planting potatoes to be precise. Gardening, he didn’t mind at all, repetitive work was always nice to tune out of the world and be by himself. The sun on his head and the ache of muscles was nice seven out of ten times, but this was getting excessive. Extremely excessive. 

The previous day, he’d spent it digging holes, and now, he’d spent his morning and continued to spend his day shoving the potatoes into the holes. Covering them up, and the thought of having to make the path again to water them made him glare at the dirt. Stupid potatoes. 

Why was he doing this anyways?

He shoved another potatoes into the soil and haphazardly covered it, moving to the next hole before looking up to stretch his back. Two rows in front, just a couple spaces ahead, was his answer. 

The farmer’s son. 

Right. 

Etho hadn’t really wanted the job, it was just to fill in time while he sorted out his new job. A friend had mentioned it, and said friend had more or less dropped him in front of the farmer’s house, and the rest was history (not really, it was a very awkward conversation Etho would very much like to forget and never think about again). And now he was there, breaking his back planting stupid potatoes when he should be at home doing—honestly, he wasn’t sure what the alternative was, hooray for moving to the middle of nowhere because he got tired of the city.

But Joel was fine, he supposed. 

…

Well…

Fine as an excuse, not fine as in handsome—which he was, but that was besides the point. 

They didn’t talk much, even though they were around the same age, and everyone said they should have plenty in common to talk about. They didn’t. Barely. 

Joel was an extrovert who liked to drink himself stupid on weekends, loud and so eager to pick a fight at any moment’s notice. Loyal like a guard dog too. A hard worker, with impeccable work ethics. Incredibly smart though he rarely used his brain, preferring fun over practicality or safety. Joel was sweet too—devoting his time to help his parents, dropping social activities the second anyone needed him, always going above and beyond to help others. 

Joel laughed and enjoyed life proudly, and he loved twice as hard. 

“We should take a break,” Joel said, and Etho had to practically throw his body in the opposite direction to not be caught staring. He pretended to stretch, making a face when his joints did in fact creaked and whined. Well, that was bad, probably. 

“Already? Can’t stand a little heat?” 

Joel looked at him with an unreadable expression, and Etho’s eyes couldn’t help drifting to his lips. (Or his body, but that wasn’t as innocent, so that was getting shelved.)

“Whatever, old man. Dehydrate for all I care.”

Etho followed Joel regardless, trying to not stare at his back. Instead, he looked down, wincing and glaring at the little mounds, cursing the root vegetable. Because beefing with potatoes was much better than staring at his not-quite-crush, right. Right. He wondered if it was too late to move deep in the mountains, never to interact with another human being ever again. He’d learn all he needed to learn in time, but then he would never see Joel again, which was a definitive drawback to his near perfect plan. And Joel was too social to invite along.

Oh, great, now he was imaging living with Joel.

Near the house, Etho more or less became one with the ground, under the shade of an apple tree. Not that he was exhausted or anything… He was just appreciating nature, becoming one with it to admire it more. Yeah. Yeah. He managed to drag himself up, sitting up against the base of the tree, having a good view of the fields. 

Then he had a great view of a Joel. 

A very up close Joel. 

“If you are going to die, could you die elsewhere? Or at least wait until I dig up a hole? You’ll be more useful dead anyways.” 

“What a weird way to say you want to use my body.”

Joel seemed to freeze on the spot, only a fraction of a second before emptying a glass of water (Etho hadn’t even notice he was holding, because Joel’s pretty face was more important, of course) into his face. Ice rolled around as he sputtered, wiping down his face to see Joel looking down at him. Just out of reach, Joel escaped his grasp, and he didn’t feel like chasing him because really cared about his job and murdering his employer’s son probably wasn’t the best idea (no, Etho wasn’t tired, not at all). Step by step, further from his grasp. 

Oddly enough, the water did help cool him down, though he was probably looking to catch a cold later, but whatever. He pulled at his shirt, fanning himself a little before his eyes drifted as they always seemed to do. Caught by the only thing worthy of attention.

Joel was crouched in front of some plants he didn’t remember what of, shears in his hands, meticulously continuing the upkeep. It made sense, since his parents weren’t in town for at least two more weeks, which meant Etho was stuck with him alone for a while longer (willingly ignoring the other workers meant nothing, not a thing). And he worked hard, endlessly. Never complaining about it. And Etho just couldn’t forgot Joel’s face, the way it broke with smiles at productive harvests, at being able to go around and pick stuff for dinner. 

Two plates at the table. For a while longer. 

Maybe he should make his move or something. 

Instead, Etho watched him prune. Carefully, deep in concentration. Broken only by the arrival of the herding dog, nuzzling into the side of his face. And how could Etho do anything but stare dumbly when Joel smiled so bright, so happy, pressing his head against the dog’s? 

And how was Etho supposed to not die of a heart attack when Joel looked at him the same way shortly after?
