Thoughts:

Not once in season 4 is there any mention of Sam and Dean being Lucifer and Michael's respective vessels. Theu were purely meant to just be involved in starting and stopping the apocalypse from a writing point of view.

However them being the "special vessels" explains why no other person who was tortured in Hell broke the first seal. It is not merely "when a righteous man spills blood in Hell" like Alastair said but when the Righteous Man does it.

However, Adam's ability to be Michael's vessel means it is more to do with the bloodline than being Michael's vessel thus implying that nobody from the Winchester bloodline (or at least nobody who had a brother who could be Lucifer's vessel) ever began torturing in Hell.

Of course, the above points become moot when you consider the fact that maybe the apocalypse had to happen now with Sam and Dean and not whenever. This is further supported in season 15 woth Chuck's narrative although that holds little relavance from a "I am watching season 4" point of view because the Chuck as a controlling God was not planned at this point.

Why do Lucifer and Michael need vessels for their fight? Multiple angels have described their human forms as uncomfortable and constricting. Surely, they would have more power in their trueforms?

Why do the angels even want this war Lucifer is locked away not causing any harm?

Surely thousands of angels could defeat Lucifer with relative ease. Technically, Lucifer has the demons but he views them as ants just like humans (season 11 onwards is not being counted because they did such a 180 on Lucifer) and he wouldn't want their help.

Also most demons can be smited quite easily by angels and a lot of them don't want to help in the apocalypse.
