Atta found solace in the kitchen of La Rose, where she waited for Hopper, Zeke, and Bucky to finish inside their private room. It had been assumed that she would sit this one out, with the men going into the room and shutting the door behind them before she could even come close to entering. Instead, she waited in the kitchen, which seemed to be fairly empty given the hour of the evening. She hadn’t expected anyone else to be coming inside, but there was a man coming in the doorway, and Atta stood up instinctively. “Oh, I’m so sorry, I know I’m not supposed to be in here,” she apologized quickly, remaining standing. “My boss is having a meeting in the other room, and I just needed somewhere to sit,” Atta admitted sheepishly. “I’m Atta, I hope I’m not a bother. If you need help cleaning up or anything, I’d be happy to help. I’ll do literally anything to keep me busy at this point--they’ve been in there for so long.”

Atta’s heart dropped into both her stomach and her throat at the same time, if it was possible. She stared at him blankly, unsure what to say. A fraud? She knew he didn’t think much of her, but that was a new low she hadn’t expected to reach. “Sir, I--I don’t sell guns and smuggle cocaine,” she countered quietly. Sure, her name was on the trucks that transported them, but he had been a part of all of the dealings, not her. “I don’t understand what you want from me, I’m trying ... I’m doing my best.” What more she could do to satisfy him, Atta wasn’t sure. She had put in the work he requested; the long hours, making sure that all of his dealings were in place. “If this is about that one truck, I can promise you that it won’t happen again. I’ve learned my lesson, I swear.” If there was a time to threaten him, it would be now, but she didn’t even have everything together to try and overthrow him just yet. She let out a cough as the smoke reached her face, covering her mouth with her hand. “I don’t want to upset you, Hopper, that’s the last thing I want to do. I just don’t know what else it is you want from me.”

There hadn’t been a day that had gone by in the past few years when Atta hadn’t thought of Flik. Now that she was building the company the way she wanted to (save for the adjustments Hopper had forced upon her), and was about to get engaged to someone else, she had been thinking about reaching out to him. The last thing she wanted was for the news to break from someone other than her. The text had been sitting open on her phone for ages, waiting to be drafted. It seemed like the universe wanted to do it for her, when she saw the familiar head of hair out of the corner of her eye while supposed to be on a check of one of Dreyfus’ biggest grocery store customers. This was how it was going to happen: at the grocery store, of all places? Part of her wanted to duck and hide, to run back to her car, but figured it was too late for that when she saw a hand waving to her in the parking lot. With a reluctant wave in return, Atta picked up her pace to catch up with him. “Flik? What are you--I mean, of course you’re here, everyone food shops. Um, hi! Hey! I can’t believe I ran into you, what a small freaking world it is. I, uh, wow, it’s been a minute. You look ... good! You look good. Are you good?”

All Atta had ever known was duty to her family, and it seemed like the only thing that she and Kit Charming had in common was just that. Except, she would never go and be with someone else while engaged to a man her parents had arranged for her to be married to. The last thing she wanted was to wind up like Marie and on the outs of her own engagement. That was something she had to set clear with Kit, her supposed-to-be-almost-fiance. If there was any way that this arrangement was going to work for her, there had to be boundaries set.Â
The only thing was that Atta was never one that was good at setting boundaries, at least not without being incredibly anxious that she was going to wind up hurting the other person in the process. This lunch was supposed to be all about doing just that, in the house that was supposed to be hers someday. “So ... Kit. Is that short for something? Doesn’t matter if it is or not. Anyway, I just wanted to discuss, um, what was going on with the things that were written about you? Sorry, I’m just kind of a cut-to-the-chase kinda girl, and I just ... wanted to get it out of the way, y’know?”

Though Hopper had easily become the most terrifying person in Atta’s life, his right-hand man was an undeniable second. There was an unpredictability and unmanaged chaos to him that only Hopper himself could subdue. Unfortunately for her, the only man who could keep Zeke under control wasn’t present, and wouldn’t be for a while, as Hopper was running late coming from a meeting, which meant the other two were simply early. Though she was uncomfortable sitting in the back room of the Beaufort restaurant while they waited for him, there was no telling when their boss would show up; they couldn’t leave. Atta cleared her throat as she set her phone down on the table, looking up at the other man with a courteous, small smile. “Do you, um ... think we should order something, or are we waiting for when he comes?” she asked, knowing it was obvious who she was referring to. “I don’t want it to get cold, but I don’t want to keep him waiting when he gets here.”

Atta had no idea what she and Hopper were doing at a small bar in Echo Creek, but she simply followed his orders nowadays. She’d learned quickly that she was becoming a figurehead for her family’s name, making deals to sign under the Dreyfus company whenever her boss needed it. With how big their shares were in the company (exactly half), she had to, or else Hopper would be out of business. Atta hated the thought of exploiting people for the good of her business partner (though it was clear they were not, in fact, partners, even with their shares) but it was the only way she could keep her own company alive, too. Every part of her wanted to drop out and call it quits, but they. had kept the Dreyfus name for so long that her family refused.
This was one of the worst encounters she’d seen, with a boy behind the bar almost getting his entire wrist chopped off because he’d attempted to fuck with the wrong man. Atta hadn’t even seen the other girl in the bar this late at night until her eyes had met the only other female’s, both bewildered. She recognized the blonde as the girl from the coffee shop, who Atta had attempted to give a job to. Ella had stepped up to defend her friend, but Hopper had pulled him aside shortly after, and Atta felt some level of responsibility to say something. “I’m so sorry, you didn’t get hurt, did you? He’s--I mean, I don’t ... I hope you don’t think I condone what just happened. That’s not me, not at all, but business is strange, and I’m stuck, just like your friend. I don’t know what I can do for him, but Il’l try my best, I promise. I didn’t mean to drag you into this, too.”

Atta let out a sigh, avoiding his gaze. She had been avoiding this conversation for a while now, but since she had somehow convinced Hopper to put off the dinner that was supposed to happen between he and Kit, it had to happen at some point. She couldn’t have him going into it blind, without knowledge of who he was dealing with. “My business partner--well, he’s kind of my boss? I don’t really know what he is. Anyway, the first thing you need to know about him is that he’s a dangerous man. Like, he blew up one of our trucks because he got mad dangerous.” She paused, finally looking at him for a moment. He had to know the risks before meeting with him and signing his life away to being part of her company.
“He wants to have dinner with us, which would be a totally normal thing to expect out of someone you’re doing business with, but Hopper’s ... not normal. He kind of hates me, which is ridiculous in itself, because all I do is anything he asks of me! I don’t really know what else he wants from me, but that’s besides the point. He said he likes you already, because, well, you’re you.” Atta sat up straight, turning her body toward Kit now, serious. “You can’t buy into it, got it? He’s going to sweet talk and make it seem like getting involved with him is a good idea, and it just isn’t. He sells all sorts of illegal stuff, and I just don’t want you to agree to anything he asks of you, okay?”

Atta didn’t realize just how popular of a guy her future fiance was until she spent more time at his house. She’d been spending more time there just to be around Kit more, but also to become more acclimated to the entire estate and start to make it feel like home. This wasn’t the first time that someone had come by when he wasn’t home, looking for him, but it was a first to see someone just saunter in like they owned the place as much as Kit did. “Holy--hello? What are you ... are you looking for Kit? He’s not home right now. You know, you could’ve knocked or something,” she sputtered, startled. She was just getting used to other people being around without fear of it being some sort of intruder. “Sorry, I would’ve cleaned up a bit more if I’d known that we were having company, but you caught me mid-cooking,” Atta apologized, wiping her hands on her apron before extending one of them to him. “I’m Atta, by the way. Excuse me being frazzled; we usually don’t have people just walking in in the middle of the day,” she said with a laugh.Â

“I know you don’t really do private chef work anymore, but hear me out, okay? I can give you ... whatever you want, name a price, and you know it also comes with a wine night because I love you.” Atta couldn’t even fathom having to cook for how many people were in her family. Though her mother had helped her in prior years, after retiring and getting weaker by the day, it was probably up to Atta this year. There was a company holiday party, too, which required catering, but Atta had put in a request from Gusteau’s months ago, just to be sure that they had enough food for every employee, Hopper’s division included. “Just think of it as a few extra portions when you’re making the company spread! That would be perfect. I don’t care if it’s the same menu--even though most of the family works at Dreyfus, they won’t even notice because it’s so good.”

The decorations and everything for Christmas had to be perfect, and Atta had taken it upon herself to see that her family’s household was decked out in nothing but the finest. Shopping gave her a bit of anxiety, with how much there was to look at and distractions from wall to wall, which was exactly why she’d enlisted the help of Aurora to come with her. She was someone who brought Atta back down to earth with the sometimes crazy ideas she had and anxiety they caused. “Okay, I’m thinking that you should only let me add one of each item to the cart. Nothing’s going in the cart until it’s fully approved and I’m sure I’m buying it. Also, I’m trying to keep the color scheme to green and red, with a bit of gold in there. You know, totally classic. What do you think, will that look good? Maybe we should just get started and let the store tell me what I want.”

The younger one who stood on Hopper’s side was a recent, but seemingly permanent, development. Atta couldn’t quite get a read on him yet, but she could tell that he was malleable, which was just what her boss wanted in someone who he recruited. Hopper liked to mold people into just the businessperson he waned them to be, and maybe the reason why he couldn’t stand Atta was because she had tried her best to stand her ground. Bucky was the kind of boy who already thought himself ahead of her because of Hopper’s affection, and while it bothered her a bit that their boss liked a kid (at least, he seemed like one) better than her, she had to at least try and assert her dominance as the name of this company. “Hey,” she greeted, tapping her knuckles lightly on the edge of his desk, “I was going to head over to the Beaufort place for the meeting, you’re coming, right? I could give you a ride.” Though Atta knew he was going to be in the room over her, she still had to be in attendance. “I’m ready whenever you are.”

Atta let out a laugh at his sudden stroke of feminism, shaking her head at herself. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that, I’m drunk, she admitted, holding up her wine glass in her hand. She wasn’t used to candid conversations like these, but she was growing more fond of Ken the more she spoke to him. “Oh, you don’t have to worry about offending me, you’ve hardly done that. I just admire how ... I guess, free you are with who you are and how you express yourself. It’s really inspiring, actually. I’ve never felt like I could really do that with my job, and I’m sure Kit has probably felt the same.” She didn’t mean to make assumptions about her fiance in front of one of his friends, but Ken seemed not only harmless, but like he wanted to help her understand who Kit really was. “Can I ask, what happened with him and the other girl? The blonde? I guess he has a type. He won’t really talk about it, but I also haven’t asked, so I guess that’s on me. How are you supposed to ask about something like that, though? Like, how’s the girl you turned down to marry me instead?”
