“I’m sorry, you’re asking me to what?”

Hinamori has an empty box cradled between her arms with small tufts of orange fur poking through the opening. Hitsugaya hears the small meow, and he looks at her incredulously.

“He’s been staying with me for a few days,” Hinamori tells him. “You know it’s raining cats and dogs since last week-“

“And you literally caught a cat from the downpour?”

“It went to my door, asking for food.” Hinamori sighs and retrieves the furry animal from the box. She supports its lower body with her arm and uses her other hand to make its paw wave at him.

Cute devil orange globs stare back at him, but Hitsugaya swears it’s an embodiment of a demon spawn – claws, vampire fangs, and a face that can get away with anything. The ears flick from one side to another in sync with its nose that seems to get bigger by the second.

“It’s only for a week, Shiro-chan. Please?” Hinamori now knows how to use her doe eyes to her advantage. “Captain Shinji wants to check on something in Karakura, and he needs me to accompany him.”

“You remember I killed a goldfish when we were kids, right?” he tries to reason his way out of this responsibility, and it’s only a matter of time before he crumbles under her presence.

Hinamori takes her eyes off him and directs it to the ginger cat, nuzzling and poking its pink nose. It purrs in her arms, and this undivided attention from her somehow annoys him. “You’ll do great, Shiro. Cats are fairly low maintenance so he’s perfect with you. Kiki knows how to use litter sand and only eats twice a day. But please don’t let him climb trees because he doesn’t know how to get down.”

Hitsugaya finally relents. “One week.”

She grins at him and returns Kiki to the box. “I’ll see you in one week, Kiki. I’m gonna miss you.”

“What about me?” he mutters under his breath.

“Hmm? Did you say something, Shiro?”

He feigns ignorance, as usual. “Nothing. Off you go.”

He is right – the cat is a devil incarnate.

The first thing it did when he brought it to his office is to scratch his most treasured chair, stretch and curl up on it as if it was its bed. He ended up doing most of his reading on the floor and got a backache by the evening.

It also wouldn’t eat the food Hinamori left. It keeps sitting near the door, probably expecting her to go back any time soon. When it is time to sleep, the cat circles around Hitsugaya’s legs and rubs the side of its cheeks against his legs, giving him goosebumps that crawled up to his neck.

“What are you doing?” he asks, but Kiki only returns a small meow. He feels foolish, trying to make conversation with an animal.

When he wakes up the next morning, he finds Kiki on his windowsill, bathing in the early morning sunshine, and his prized cacti on the floor, broken and uprooted, alongside books toppled over on their spine. “You are such a demon.”

Meow.

He realizes he is running later than his usual time in, and of all days, this gets to happen on a day they have a general assembly scheduled with the whole division. He is barely out of the door when he hears Kiki yowling.

“What, can’t you stay here?”

An aggressive mewl escapes the cat’s throat.

“You’re such a bother.” Hitsugaya takes out a linen fabric and wraps it across his body. He awkwardly holds Kiki, who thank heavens doesn’t scratch him, and secures him in the middle. The cat shifts in a comfortable position and stares up at him with its doe eyes that strongly remind him of Hinamori.

He goes to his office like that, his zanpakuto on his back and a ginger kitten on his front.

His subordinates gawk at him all throughout the assembly like he suddenly grew three heads while Matsumoto, for once, dutifully takes note of the minutes, unperturbed by the sight of a kitten sleeping soundly against their captain’s chest.

Hitsugaya notices that Kiki is having trouble sleeping in the evenings. He read somewhere that cats are nocturnal creatures, but it’s adamant on staying guard in front of his door every night, without fail. He gives food bigger than its usual portion and it gulps them all up in one long breath, but even this doesn’t lull him to sleep. It waits for someone to enter, and Hitsugaya wonders if his idea will work.

He rummages in his laundry basket and finds an old shirt Hinamori wore. “Kiki.”

The cat glances back at its name but doesn’t move an inch from the door. Hitsugaya scoots closer and dangles the shirt in front of him, and almost immediately, Kiki’s whiskers perk up and its nose registers the scent.

With a raised tail, its paws saunter over to Hitsugaya to sniff the fabric. It falls on its side along with the shirt and rolls over it with its belly exposed. Meow.

“You have a loud purr, do you know that?” Hitsugaya smirks. “Don’t get the wrong idea though. She got tomato sauce all over her shirt when she decided to cook pasta so I let her borrow one.”

Meow. Kiki looks at him dubiously.

“No, she didn’t sleep over! And stop assuming!”

Meow. It continues to roll over, its paws flinging playfully on the air.

“Yeah, I miss her too.” Hitsugaya takes his pillow and blanket from the bed and lays down beside Kiki and her shirt, also smelling the remnants of her fragrance, faint traces of vanilla accompanying him to sleep.

“What do you mean it’s gone?”

He was called for a group meeting with the Kuchiki siblings along with Matsumoto, and he left Kiki with the lower seat lieutenants. Cold chills ran along his back when they reported him missing.

“I’m sorry, Captain. One of the staff came in with our revamped weapons, and the cat rushed out of the door.” They all bowed their bodies in 90-degrees – they really are sorry.

And he’s screwed. Because Hinamori is coming back today.

“Want me to call it?” Matsumoto already knows his next plan of action. He nods in response. “Okay, Division 10, let’s launch Finding Kiki operation now!”

Armed with kibbles, bells, toys, and treats, all available Shinigami are dispatched to find the ginger cat. Flyers are also printed and given to bypassers in hopes that they saw it. Hitsugaya flash-steps throughout Seireitei, jumping across roofs, his eyes hyperfocused on any orange blob on the ground below.

“Come on Kiki, you’ll be back home with Momo today. You can’t just leave!” He shouts in frustration.

After an hour, he lands back in front of their division headquarters with a gloomy countenance. It will be embarrassing but he might have to ask for help from nearby divisions – Renji can keep mum about this, maybe Rukia too –

Meow.

Hitsugaya swivels so fast he almost loses his balance.

“You heard it, right?” Matsumoto also frantically searches for the source of the sound.

Meow.

He happens to glance up the fire tree and finds Kiki wrapped around a thin branch, blending perfectly among the orange flowers. “Kiki!”

Meow. The cat’s ears perk up when it finally notices its caretaker, his tail wagging in recognition.

“Oh thank God,” Matsumoto mutters beside him. “Hinamori crying is a painful sight. I keep thinking of excuses in my head earlier to avoid the inevitable.”

“That dumb evil spawn really climbed up a tree.” Hitsugaya jumps across the branches of the fire tree but only manages to stay on the branch opposite Kiki’s position. He cannot simply grab it because its claws are deeply embedded on the wood, and his weight may immediately lead to the branch’s collapse. Poor cat must have been so terrified.

“Kiki, let go and climb onto my arm,” he urges the ginger.

Meow. Kiki stays rooted on its spot.

Hitsugaya decides to quickly grab him, his legs ever so briefly touching the branch, but it creaks under pressure and breaks off from the trunk. He hears some yelling, but the pain on his butt is more distracting.

That hurts. Red orange petals fall softly to the earth.

Meow. The claws are digging deep on Histugaya’s chest, but he doesn’t mind, not at all, not when Kiki rubs its cheeks against him and stares at him in between with its pretty doe eyes. Meow.

“Oh, I see her.” Matsumoto pulls her captain from the ground, and he immediately winces in pain.

“I think I broke my tailbone,” Hitsugaya whispers to her.

“Quick, act cool,” she whispers back.

Hinamori seems to have run all the way to their division, she is huffing and red flush creeps on her face. “I’m sorry I was delayed by a few minutes.”

She brightens up when she sees Kiki nestled in between Hitsugaya’s arms. “Seems like I worried for nothing.”

Meow.

Matsumoto side-eyes Hitsugaya and gives him a wink. You did great! she mouths and flashes him a thumbs up.

Hitsugaya gives her a blank stare, too immersed in controlling his pain levels. He senses Kiki starting to get fussy so he gestures to Hinamori to take it.

She gently coaxes the ginger out of his hands, and she pokes its pink nose. “Did you have fun with Meowdy Shiro?”

There is a moment of awkward silence which Hinamori fails to notice, and then it breaks. Matsumoto isn’t able to hide the laughter nor do his other division members who saw the spectacle earlier.

Oh, the things he does for her.

Old F/inal Space OC posting!!

Been rewatching F/inal Space and I got reminded of my old oc (or well.. very mini s/i) I made for it back in 2019! Which I redesigned sometime in 2022/2023!

Some extra old sketches;;

I used to ship her lots with lord commander as that was my focus for a bit back in 2019 but.. with this rewatch, my focus is definitely more on avocato! So expect alot more oc x canon stuff with that! :D
