i played house of ashes recently and, my god, do i have brainrot. so ummm strangetown house of ashes au 🚨🚨🚨🐛 might crawl out of writing block hell to write something for this

very rough and lenghty summary below cut lol

after sim nation fell into war with the planet sixam, everything fell into disarray.

the grunt family has fled strangetown to join the forces in pleasantview and the once quaint desert town becomes a hub for sixam's own military. sixam recruits the willing townspeople to fight for both planets as to restore their peace.

before strangetown knows it, general buzz grunt returns with his own team to scope where the enemy might be storing their weapons, with sixam's technology being way ahead of earth's it would equal their forces and maybe grant them victory.

he finally confirms the weapons to be stored at an abandoned military base just at the edge of the town and hidden between the mountains. but once they close in on the place, it becomes very clear that this base hasn't seen a living being in millenia and they are ambushed by strangetown's military.

when they're about to surrender, surrounded by the enemy, the ground swallows them all whole, vines wrap around them and they're pulled through layers of sand until they're let go and fall into the world, thats stranger-than-strangetown, below and are forced to face an ancient evil.

team's get split and old friends and enemies reunited. will the two opposing sides decide to work together? or is the war's divide too great?

who knows, they might even meet a familiar face below the sands.

thought dump on danny/jack as a feud vs darby/jack being environmental storytelling for the elite 🐛

from the perspective of me, a darby enjoyer, not someone looking too in depth into danny and jack. other people are doing that. now darby and the elite have parted ways and danny has stepped in to go for the belt darby failed to take and is doing some compelling stuff with jack, I’m Ruminating on the summer darby had. (and tbh that I found his time with jack not very compelling at all, personally, but feel it was perfect for building to what is happening now)

as we know, it was always supposed to be eddie that set jack on fire. darby was a last moment replacement who 1. had a license to handle a flamethrower, 2. would be willing to do aita at a minutes notice, and 3. made sense to be inserted in the storyline (and practically, he’d just come off a lot of work and building trust with the bucks earlier in the year. matt finds him genuinely scary. so it was a good matchup to continue a successful relationship they’d already started). and it made perfect sense that darby would be pissed with everything the elite were doing; it goes against his entire work ethic. he had preexisting issues with the bucks and jack — he’d already talked about not liking jack in the pillars promos so it was an easy thread to pick back up (thought jungleboy was disingenuous and silly, thinks scapegoat is real but a jerk). the evp gimmick existed for sting, then the purpose of it evolved once he’d retired. it made sense that darby returned from his lost-without-sting-ready-to-die-got-injured hiatus and discovered what they were doing and started biting. the team aew vs team elite thing was haphazard for a lot of reasons, and it was running alongside the somewhat obvious secret plan for darby to get closer to bryan and eventually retire him for the world title (which we now know was cover for the actual secret plan with mox). but darby’s push to become seen as one of the faces of the company was supposed to happen this year, and it was supposed to go very differently. it was mutually beneficial that each time he was injured he could immediately return to a significant role. aita, b&g, and when he was finally ready to return to standard matches they were mostly still keeping things rolling wrt him getting that push (title shot, tags, teams — things he wasn’t previously known for) while being a good boy, unlike the stinky elite.

the majority of what happened between darby and jack was in the context of aew vs elite. darby went after them all in turn, got his nose broken by the bucks, returned and humiliated them, talked shit about them. in a team or trio darby and jack tended to be matched, but it wasn’t until the bucks tried to hand the tnt to jack that darby (again injured, again returning with little to no build and needing a significant spot (wembley in sight! aaa!)) shifted focus from trying to take his baby aew from the elite to getting back his second baby, his special significant belt that deserved better. the narrowing down to darby vs jack for the tnt still involved the elite (literally — it was matt he had to target to get the match. ftr/darby vs the elite was the show before wembley and he pinned matt). what jack did with the belt was sick as hell, but otherwise the build to the match was a bit eh. darby’s interviews about it were eh, because the point was he just didn’t care that much about jack, this guy he already didn’t like and hey at least he’s being true to himself and who he is kinda sucks. the overarching point of darby being the one doing this was that he is the guy sacrificing everything; the elite never show up to work and never defend their titles while he’s out here doing the promo, doing all 3 shows some weeks, and that’s genuine to his character.

I’ve made my feelings about the wembley match very clear before, but regardless of the match content the purpose was always going to be that jack retained so the young bucks could try to burn darby alive and then have the fear of god put in them by sting returning to Get Them. to the end darby’s involvement in all of this was about the entire elite, that full circle moment with them trying to do to him what he did to jack, and the even wider full circle of sting. when it ended it ended, darby said he wasn’t all that bothered about losing his first coffin match and was eager to start work with mox and ofc jack quickly went into his own new thing with bryan and then defending the tnt.

SO the point of all this is that personally I could never get all that interested in what darby and jack were doing, their energies felt mismatched. darby’s apathy about him and distraction of wanting aew from the elite + the bucks constantly sticking their noses (and reeboks, and petrol cans) in trying to stop him from making himself a big problem for them. he didn’t really need anything with jack in the way danny does, jack was just a part of a larger problem. what danny is doing with jack feels explosive and horny, genuine and from somewhere deeply personal, in a way that what darby was doing just didn’t. darby didn’t need the tnt, he’s already way past that giving him any validation, he just wanted it to be taken from someone he deemed undeserving. darby was having his own little moment in that this was constantly pushing him, making him a team player, building the concept of team aew and a company that needed saving (again, now knowing that he knew what mox was soon planning to do and that him being clearly on a side and the evps being weak lazy villains was going to matter). danny’s issue with jack is far more direct, personal and urgent, and it’s just about starting to give him a crisis now he’s really getting into it. and what darby did do for jack was establish all of the reasons danny hates him. darby did progressively ruder interviews about jack, he was almost entertained by how much of an asshole he thought jack was. darby had his own agenda that jack was a factor in but didn’t hate him like danny hates him, he hated the bosses he used to respect and the guy with his belt, who he was happy to giggle about not liking. he was intense about the elite situation as a whole and built them up for their lazy and arrogant behaviour while clearly on even footing with them, not like danny who has been fighting to be acknowledged. but in that darby was disparaging about jack, who then beat him (but sting was there, despite it all! sting had his back. jack and the bucks didn’t have each other’s backs in that moment, and as it’d turn out matt wouldn’t stay for the guy he saw as his son, who as it turned out was quickly flaking on the bucks and seeming like he could turn at any moment). everything danny is saying reflects criticism that jack has genuinely been receiving over the past months. darby did the setup for the evps being awful no-good bosses who never show up for anyone and leave it all to him, and he did the same with building jack up as the title holder that never did anything deserving and danny has been watching and come to viciously hate.

so tl;dr of this entire thought: of course there was immediate comparison between darby/jack and danny/jack, but darby and danny are on very different trajectories and needed very different things from their involvement. darby was there to draw out a narrative with the elite and look like the best boy and do some biting for enrichment, and now it’s all fallen apart danny is struggling with how much he’s willing to do outside of a fair fight to claw what he deserves from someone undeserving, and jack is getting a satisfying little chase out of it and has the Behaviours (and I’ll be interested to see where he goes next if danny wins and this ends jack’s ties with being elevated in the company)
