So. It is my birthday today.
For some reason once you reach a certain age, birthdays start feeling really weird. I canât even pin point the exact age that happens, just that at some point instead of making you feel special and loved, it just starts making you feel weird.
Like when you were a child everyone treated your birthday as your special day, the day when you were showered with attention and love, got lots of presents, someone made you a cake and immortalised the day into your familyâs photo album. Even as you got older it was a day designed to have fun, when your friends took you to the movies or to get drinks or at the very least spent the day with you.
But then you reach a point in adulthood where your birthday starts making you feel weird. People donât even really think youâre supposed to celebrate it anymore, unless itâs a big one, like turning 30, 40, 50⊠youâre not supposed to want the attention or the presents or the cake. Itâs just a day among other days, right? You even notice the decline in getting birthday wishes, and then at some point the only ones who remember are your parents and your closest friends.
Birthdays also start making you feel a little lonely. Adulthood comes with your friends scattered all over the world, everyone having responsibilities, their own families, trying not to stress themselves to sickness, and you feel bad if you ask if someone wants to have dinner. No worries if you canât, itâs not a big one. In the end you end up eating chocolate cake alone, watching your favorite comfort movies and ignoring the fact that the feeling of loneliness is only going to get worse in the future.
Despite all of that, Iâm thinking of the privilege of aging on my birthday today.
Itâs hard not to reflect on life when you turn 36. Itâs not a very important age. Nothing that special about it. Except that it does unfortunately remind you of all the things you still havenât achieved yet. It reminds you of all the things you couldâve been, of the things you wanted to be and never got a chance to become. Things you can still achieve if youâre willing to do the work for it. The realisation that itâs most likely too late for you to achieve some of those things, even if you arenât that sure it was ever something you actually wanted.
Is aging sometimes painful and lonely? Yes. Is it always graceful? Obviously not. Does the passing of the time sometimes stress you out so badly you start spiraling? Definitely. But despite all of that, I am still here to celebrate another birthday. Not everyone has a privilege to do that. Thereâs no guarantee that I will have that privilege for years and years to come, either.
So on this birthday I try to remain grateful that I get to witness my first grey hairs and the deepening wrinkles on my face. I donât always appreciate all the changes in my body but it is a privilege to witness them, to not stay forever young, frozen in time and in peopleâs memories. I get to witness myself settling into the person I am. I might not be as wise yet as I should be by now but I have gained some life experience I can share with others who need someone to comfort them. Not everyone has the privilege to do that. Thereâs no guarantee I will have that privilege for years and years to come, either.
35 wasnât that good for me, for several reasons. It was the loneliest year of my life and made me terrified of the future I might face. I worried about my career, my health but also the state of the world in general. Life isnât what I pictured it would be like 10 years ago. Still, thereâs no point in mourning the things that never came to be. You also have to see the light. You have to have hope.
Because even when life doesnât treat you gently or kindly you can still have good days. Sometimes they are more exciting, getting new career opportunities, making good memories that will always stay with you, feeling connected with the world and like anything is possible. Sometimes peace and happiness comes from the little things, it can be as simple as listening to your favorite songs on a random saturday, wearing your new lipstick, watching your favorite show, getting a message from your friend. Sure, there will be those days where I feel like I canât carry all the weight anymore, like it takes all my strength to get out of the bed and keep going. I still refuse to let go of hope. Hope for the better, hope for peace, hope for many more years on this earth. Maybe Iâm just being headstrong, maybe I keep going out of spite, maybe Iâm resilient, who knows⊠but I do know that without hope? I have nothing. Itâs what keeps me going.
So, despite of all the horros and dark days, of terrible news from all over the world, despite the pain sometimes being so bad it keeps you awake at night⊠I am grateful for this privilege of getting to age and getting to grow older with all of you. You all have made my life a little brighter every time I log in. You have made me laugh even on those days when I have felt like all I want to do is stay in bed, when the stress and anxiety makes it hard to breathe freely. Even if we have never talked I am thankful for all the joy you have given me and I am grateful that I get to still witness this birthday with all of you. I hope we will all be here, happy and safe and healthy, this time next year too. I have hope that we will be.

[ðïž] About a year ago, Joel Haver made a video looking back on 4 years of uploading weekly short films. It's one of my favourite videos, visually, in its tone and regarding its message, and I feel now that the year is coming to a close, it might be a really inspiring watch: it's been fun.
[ð] I wish I could invite you all over to show you the illustrated edition of E.T.A. Hoffmann's Nutcracker that my parents gifted me in 2001. Instead, I offer you a very nice translation: Nutcracker and the King of Mice - and, if you're the audiobook type, I found a good translation with Tchaikovsky's music here. The story is haunting, delicate, glittering, unheimlich. It starts on Christmas Day and infuses the following days and nights with magic. It was such a joy to share this Advent Calendar with you and I hope that with this, I can share some of my Christmas festivities with you, too, since they're so entwined with this story (and since the first chapters also somewhat accurately depict how I celebrate Christmas, too - on the evening of the 24th, after decorating the tree).
