'Signs of Life': Sycamore Gap Tree Will Live On, Experts Say

The tree occupied a magical spot in the landscape of Northumberland, England, and in the hearts of people who visited it. So the news that efforts to propagate the ancient tree will likely succeed is being welcomed now, after the tree was felled in September.

"[We] are encouraged by positive signs of life, and are hopeful that over 30 per cent of the mature seeds and half of the cuttings (scions) will be viable," said Andy Jasper, the National Trust's director of gardens and parklands, in a statement sent to NPR.

"Over the next year, we'll be doing all we can to nurture the seeds and cuttings, in the hope that some will grow into strong, sturdy saplings," Jasper said, "providing a new future for this much-loved tree."

The sycamore's trunk might also regrow, Jasper said, but it could be several years before it's known whether that will bear out.

"As with many things in landscape restoration, we need to be patient and take the time to let nature do its thing," he said.

'No Aurther Action' For Teen Who Was Arrested

A 16-year-old boy was arrested shortly after the tree was cut down, in what police said was an act of deliberate vandalism. But Northumbria Police recently said the teen "will now face no further action by police." Instead, their focus is on three men — two in their 30s and one in his 60s — who were arrested in the weeks since the incident.

Police haven't divulged many details about the three remaining suspects, but media reports have suggested at least one of them is a former lumberjack who was in possession of a large chainsaw.

Criminal charges in the case could extend beyond the tree itself. Authorities recently announced that when the sycamore fell, it also damaged Hadrian's Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that once marked the ancient frontier of the Roman Empire.

Welcome News About a Famously Photogenic Tree

The good news about the tree's legacy comes after weeks of waiting for word of whether the 200-year-old tree might somehow live on. The felling sparked public sadness and outrage as arborists rushed to the scene to try to preserve the tree.

The 200-year-old sycamore and its scenic location alongside Hadrian's Wall made it a famous spot for people to visit during vacations, walks and picnics. It also appeared in countless Instagram photographs and mementos, and at least one feature film.

Public response to the loss of the tree has been "unprecedented," according to the National Trust. The long-running conservation charity says nearly 17 million people have followed news of the tree through its social media channels.

The National Trust is the steward of thousands of acres of land around Hadrian's Wall, including parts of Northumberland National Park like the gully where the sycamore grew.

The trust and the park are now working on plans to create a lasting tribute to the tree, including how best to use the wood salvaged from its large trunk.

Definitely Adrin from Tomb of Light! His close relationship with his younger sister contributed to his protective nature, but he is also someone who would protect anyone in need regardless if he knows them or not. He knows how to wield a sword and he understands people and knows how to get them to relax. If only he could relax himself! While Mara is the feral cat of the group, Adrin is definitely a protective golden retriever.

Plymbridge Woods-a dog walking review.

Located on Plymbridge Road in Plymouth, Plymbridge Woods offers lush walks through woodland, across fields, beside valleys and along the River Plym.

When you arrive, whether you are coming in from the Plympton or the Eastover side, you will find free parking available. I would recommend, as a dog walker, that you go early morning in the summer to avoid the rush of families.

There are several different routes to take, depending on what type of walk you and your dog prefer. You could start with a field walk to allow them to blow off steam, running and interacting with other dogs, then head towards the woods to cool off and get some good sniffs in.

The woodland provides cover from trees such as oak, ash, beech and sycamore. There are also a variety of plants and shrubs that provide stimulation for those twitchy noses. Plymbridge is a relatively young wood which was planted 110 years ago for the use of growing crop trees. That's why it is currently made up of single species compartments which is not ideal for nature. The rangers and volunteers at the National Trust have been working on this and have started to reinstate a healthy, natural balance of trees. This means chopping some trees down to allow sunlight to flood the woodland floor and encourage wild flowers and fauna to flourish.

Plymbridge woods will be a natural, beautiful and nature rich environment for wildlife and people to enjoy for future generations with the hard work of the rangers and volunteers there. For this they ask that you stick to the paths and routes already made (which there are plenty) to ensure the continued growth of the woodland floor.

My dogs really enjoy the variety of smells, sounds and terrain available. If I'm feeling energetic one of my favourite routes to take is up a hill to the top of the valley, which offers great views and a peaceful walk.

Another hit with the dogs is the River Plym. Come rain or shine they love a dip in the river. There are safe, shallow areas for those not so good at swimming or there are deep parts for those wanting to practice their doggy paddle. In the summer it can become popular with visiting families but there are spots that you can find which are quieter for your doggy pals to have a dip.

The waterfalls make it especially picturesque on those bright summer days - great for budding photographers to get a pic of their dog having a splash.

The rangers ask that you supervise your dog at all times and that you only allow dogs with good recall off their lead, as the woodland can be an easy place to lose sight of your dog. You also need to be aware that cyclists use some of the routes through Plymbridge, so keep an eye and ear out for them and maybe use the routes not as easily accessible to bikes - which again there are plenty of.

At the end of your walk you can rest up with an ice-cream from the ice-cream van located mainly in the Plympton side carpark (depending on the time of year).

Plymbridge is one of those walks where you feel connected to nature without having to travel miles away from home. A good mix of fields, woodland and trails. Remember to pack your wellies for winter walks though - it can get muddy on some routes!

I'd also like to hold them gently in my hands!

🌸☀️Cinderthorn – Okay I've literally NEVER actually seen Lily and Cinder interact except for at the Gathering when Lily was literally in the process of bleeding out and dying but like!! Reading their posts where they think about each other I can tell they love each other so so much even without seeing them ever really talk and I love that??? I adore them. Also extremely fond of Cinder and Mountain's relationship they make me feel so much,,, I want to see more of them. For ideal friendships, GET over to the canyon border so Pinky can talk to her again!!! I had a ton of fun with it when they ran into her and (I think it was?) Hazel on that one patrol, I'd love to see them hang out again and talk about painting! Also shoving Jag at Cinder they should be besties again I demand it.

🍃Merry River – AU where Merry becomes Spice Wish's apprentice after everything,, I think he'd be about the same as canon tbh, just with the goal of knowing EVERYTHING there is to know about herbs and healing, both in HoneyClan, in the other Clans, and in regards to supernatural stuff as well, instead of his goal of strength as a warrior. He'd otherwise have many of the same struggles and insecurities, though I think it'd be interesting to see him have such a complicated relationship with Spice. Wanting to learn from him and appreciating him for all he does, but also guiltily resenting him a little bit for not doing more and not being able to save Juniper.

☁️Sycamore Whistle – Hear me out ok what if TimberClan Sycamore. The density of TimberClan's underbrush and the potential for nymphs and fairy rings being so high, there could be all kinds of things around for Sycamore to see and notice, and the ideal of keeping one's Clan safe and healthy could be easily backed up by a little TimberClan strength in this case. The way TimberClan cats never let go or give up on one another could also be interesting to play with in terms of loss, and I'd be interested in Syc and Palemist's relationship in that AU for sure! I think it'd probably be funny asghdj

☁️Crabclaw – God I can't even imagine. Crab is so TimberClan it's weird to think of him as anything else? He'd really be a completely different cat anywhere else. All the events in his life who made him who he is would never have happened in HoneyClan, so he wouldn't even be the same cat in like any conceivable way. MarrowClan Crab I could maybe see? Life events would line up anyway, but I imagine he'd be a lot less shouty and a lot more quiet with the occasional cutting jeer thrown into conversation, a lot more tense and fearful too.
