isara mao has always been second best.

it is how he spent most of his life, it is what he’s ultimately used to. he knows he would never be first– he knows he's not good enough to be first.

those are the facts, the truths he’s had to abide by since he was a child. no matter how hard he tried, there was always someone who was, simply put, better.

yet to accept a truth is easier than to stop hoping he could one day break the cycle.

he’s reminded of this once more as he watches his unit-mates work on their next choreography. as a friend first and unit-mate second, he will always be proud of them, will always support them and help make them shine if he can.

that doesn’t mean it hurts any less. 

watching them so easily become what he’s always wished he could be. isara mao is well aware he could never sparkle like they do.

as it turns out, he’s the only ‘trick’, whereas the other 3 are the ‘star’.

to accept it is slightly different than it is to continue fighting it.

and that’s where you come in.

while anzu may be their primary manager, she’s been kept busy by other units recently, so to keep trickstar functioning properly in her absence, you’ve been assigned to help them out instead.

mao wouldn’t exactly call it love at first sight (though makoto yuuki would beg to differ)– he simply has good intuition when it comes to people. he just knew you’re a good person, so he stuck close to you. that’s all.

all was well at first.

you helped them out wherever you could, gave them useful advice and even basically collaborated on the choreography. what caught mao off guard however, was that you tried your best to focus on all of them equally. you gave all of them the time of day when they needed it, without any reservations or excuses. if makoto had a question, you would answer it, and if mao needed help the moment after, you would immediately be by his side.

it was weird, to be treated like a voluntary choice.

then suddenly you no longer had time for mao. 

makoto, subaru, hokuto. subaru, makoto, hokuto. hokuto, makoto, subaru.

never mao.

and he doesn’t understand why. 

he doesn’t remember doing anything to upset you, so why?

have you simply realized he’s not good enough to be a choice?

sitting on a random staircase in yumenosaki, the redhead swirled his can of coke as he let out yet another helpless sigh.

he couldn’t even ask ritsu for help, he’d just fall asleep halfway through the story. perhaps it’s for the best if he doesn’t say anything at all. just suck it up and stick it out till the end, as always. deal with it.

for so long he’s associated himself with venus– with it being the second planet from the sun and all– he forgot to think that, maybe, he was just pluto all along.

with the final sigh of his short pity party, he threw the can in the nearest bin and made his way back to the studio. just a bit more practice and perhaps he’ll finally get closer to the others. 

the door opens before him and you’re standing there, eyes wide and mouth gaping, as if you’re seeing him for the first time (he probably doesn’t look much different though, he thinks).

“mao! i was just about to go look for you! the others have left already so i finally have time for you, i’m so sorry i’ve been pushing it off for so long, there was always just.. something. the lights broke and the–” you paused to let out a quick breath, shoulders relaxing for the first time this week, “you know what, whatever, doesn’t matter. i can finally take care of your concerns, so out with them!”

you step away from the doorway to let him in, but he just stands there dumbfounded.

“..mao?”

“... so you– you weren’t ignoring me? like, without reason?”

“what? no! i would never do that!” you looked genuinely distraught and now he feels bad for ever thinking so because yeah, you would never do that (or would you?), he’s just too used to people doing it (way too used, a voice in his head chuckles).

“oh,” he breathes, then steps into the studio.

“if it were up to me i would’ve dropped everything to cater to your needs, but the spotlight that was supposed to be on your position broke, so i made that my priority,” oh, “i’m sorry if i made you feel unimportant, i should’ve discussed it with you first..”

“n-no! no, no it’s fine. you’re fine. .. thank you. for-for doing that for me. and i’m sorry, too, i shouldn’t have assumed..”

you smile at him and he thinks not even the sun is worthy of you. 

it may be the center of the solar system, where pluto is not even a planet and where venus is second– but in the system isara mao sees you as the center of, perhaps he was mercury all along. if he is to crash and burn and suffer incineration in the long run, it may just be a worthy sacrifice.

at least he will no longer be second best.

natsume sakasaki then remembers he is, in fact, a man on a mission.

he stops himself (though very reluctantly) before he can kiss you again and pulls away abruptly.

“no, wait, not yet,” you are taken aback at that, understandably so. first he asks if he can do it then he says ‘not yet’?? what's that supposed to mean?

after noticing your confused gaze, he stops mumbling to himself, “sorry, almost made a mistake. this wasn’t how i planned it. i was supposed to ask first before i kissed you..”

now you’re even more confused, “but.. you did ask..?”

“no, no, not that, it’s.. ugh, hold on,” the redhead takes a deep, steadying breath and clears his throat, “alright, let’s do that again. uh, now that the deal is over, we are no longer dating. there is no faking, nothing. so i wanted to ask you if you would do me the honor of being my girlfriend? for real, this time?”

you can't help but let out a chuckle, along with a quick sigh in relief, “oh, stars, you scared the shit out of me. of course i would! i’d be delighted to be your girlfriend, for real, this time. now can you kiss me?”

“i think i can,” and he leans down to, with the gentle press of his lips against yours, seal the deal.

for real, this time.

after getting ready you slowly made your way to the park you and natsume usually met up at.

most of the time you would find yourself rushing to get there just to see him sooner, but not this time. no, you were taking your sweet time to collect your thoughts and the words you want to say, forming them into coherent sentences, and battling your nerves (they, unfortunately, had hands). you find yourself questioning whether this was a mistake– perhaps you should have typed up an essay after all, it would've been easier than saying it to his face. but, then again, seeing his reactions is way better. also, it's more genuine this way.

even if the thought of turning around crossed your mind, you couldn't go through with it anymore. you look up only to be met with the redhead sitting on his (self appointed) swing, staring directly at you. he shoots you a hesitant smile paired with a wave and suddenly, instead of running away, you want to run to him. 

so you do.

he sees you running and immediately gets up, ready to either live or die– he's not quite sure which– but then you run into him with a force strong enough to nearly send both of you toppling over, had he not caught himself in time. maybe, maybe he will live.

“thank you for agreeing to meet with me, it means a lot to me.”

“hey hey, this isn't a business meeting, you know?” he tries to lighten the mood with a joke, wrapping one arm around your waist while his other hand lightly runs through your hair, reciprocating the hug you– quite literally– slammed onto him.

“yeah, yeah, i just.. i was worried you wouldn't wanna see me again, or something..”

“a funny thing to say to the guy who told you he was in love with you barely 10 hours ago.”

there is a moment of silence when a gentle breeze brushes past, rustling the leaves of the old maple tree the park was built around. a couple leaves fall with a flourish and you think this might be your shojo manga moment.

“.. you meant it?”

“i did. wholeheartedly. i'm in love with you and i don't think anything is going to change that.”

your hold on his jacket tightens and he feels your lips curl into a smile against his neck. “.. good. that’s good. i’m glad,” you pull away from the hug and there's an entire galaxy in your eyes, perhaps even the center of it, looking for objects to put into it’s orbit, and natsume sakasaki finds himself volunteering, “i think i’m in love with you, too.”

“i’m glad,” he flashes you the gentlest, happiest of smiles you’ve ever seen and now you think you truly understand what rei and wataru meant when they called him the sweetest child they’ve ever met, what shu meant when he said he had the most beautiful smile. you thought you understood their words when they spoke them to you, but no– no, you understand them now. in this moment, natsume sakasaki looks the happiest you’ve seen him these past 5 months. he looks quite overjoyed while he performs with switch, but not even those shiny eyes and wide smiles of his top this moment. last night's concert with the eccentrics might come close, but this smile still wins.

“you’re ethereal,” you find yourself stealing his words. doesn’t matter, however, as you will repeat them as often as necessary, since they are as true as can be.

his cheeks flare up in a color similar to his hair, and his gentle smile becomes shy and close-eyed, “thank you. i would say the same about you. ethereal, breathtakingly so,” and he steals yours in turn. now there is only one thing missing to perfectly replicate last night, you realize. 

he seems to notice as well, based off the way you feel his hands start shaking ever so slightly.

“can i kiss you?”

is there an answer other than yes?

you admit you like natsume– very much so– but if you only made it up, you’re gonna have to give up on him after today. it’s the day of the deal's expiry, after all.

before your thoughts could spiral any further than that, you felt your phone vibrate next to you which, you assume, is what woke you up in the first place. after unlocking it you see numerous messages from the one and only natsume sakasaki himself.
