This morning, I wanted to peel a tangerine for you.

I grabbed one from the fruit bowl in the corner of our kitchen, a bumpy sort of sphere that could not care less that it wasn’t perfect. Perhaps that was exactly what made it perfect, but who am I to judge?

I turned it over in my hands, running my finger from the bright green stalk at the top to the little dent at the bottom to the bumpy, carefree sides, unsure where to start. I haven’t done this for aeons. It felt like my hands had held about a million stars since the last time they held a tangerine.

I suppose, now that I think about it, it wasn’t all that different from holding a star; its orange skin radiated warmth, almost as bright as your laughter. From here, I could see everything: the cosmically-ordained meetings of tangerine flowers and the bees that whizzed by like comets, the miniature supernova as the flower’s petals fell, the galaxy of leaves that cradled the fruit as it grew. If I wanted to, I could even see your expression as I passed you a segment, but existence is no fun without surprises, is it not?

It took a few attempts, but at last I dug my short fingernail into the skin and pulled. Of course not, of course it hadn’t been so long since I’d last done this.

Somewhere on this planet, I was Cody, sitting on a picnic blanket with my parents, my nails short, just like here, only now breaking the outer coating of the fruit. Perhaps I’d pushed a little too hard, I thought, as juice ran down my thumb and onto my palm.

Just in the next universe over, two or three swishing temporal veils away, I was Isobel, unable to contain the hurricane of giggles at my own sticky fingers, drawing confused stares from my coworkers that I only loosely acknowledged.

The skin came away in little islands first, then in a sprawling spiral. I was Ala from the other edge of existence, confused to have come across such an unusual fruit and utterly, pleasantly perplexed at how easy it was to peel.

Holding the peeled tangerine in my hands, I ran over to you. You were sitting on our sofa that we’d found by a skip with several tears we’d since repaired with a hundred multicoloured patches. The sun in the windows caught your shimmering hair, and the little boat-shaped segment as I placed it into your palm.

Tangerines are orders of magnitude rarer than diamonds in this universe. I could search any infinity of existences, see all the wonders every dimension has to offer, and I would never feel quite the same elation as I did in our little living room.

This morning, you ate half a tangerine. So did a billion ‘me’s, or more. And so, though I did not need to, did the ‘me’ sitting on the patchy sofa with you, every segment a burst of electric, perfectly imperfect colour.

@gmilfwhore OKAY HEAR ME OUT. Sunrise calls Moonlight ‘angel’ a lot because their wings and halo remind her of the conventional depiction of angels, but when Moonlight thinks of angels they think of the many-winged, many-eyed, incomprehensible variety and it makes them happy because ‘omg she thinks I really do belong in my otherworldly eldritch found family…’

Sphynx for G' and Tabby for Sunrise!

I think we both do! I love my starry jumper so much, it’s black with silver stars on it and has a really nice texture…I knew how to knit a long time ago but forgot over time, I physically cannot stay at repetitive tasks for a long time unless I have some other form of stimulation (it’s the ADHD), but… I think he could tbh! He’d like it, he’d like watching one dimension (a line of wool) turn to two (a piece of fabric) and eventually to three (an item of clothing)… he might have even made Entropy some of their crazy jumpers… they’re just really comfy and a great item of clothing overall, I remember having a really pretty rainbow one as a child but then it got too small for me, I hope to find a similar one in my size someday.

I am extremely touch starved and Sunrise is physically affectionate so YES we absolutely do all of the cuddles. I really like it when she wraps her arms around me from behind when we’re lying down together… her typical body temperature being lower than a human’s means we’re not too stuffy even on hot days and on cold days all of the blankets get brought out to ensure we’re nice and warm…

Moonlight likes Neon! They warmed up to one another quickly because they share most of their creative interests, and Moonlight probably made a few necklaces for Neon as well as asking to learn all about xeir early 2010s art programs, and they often go clothes shopping together (some of Neon’s extremely vibrant style has definitely rubbed off on Moonlight). They’re just good friends overall!

Argon’s initially standoffish presentation intimidated Moonlight a little at first, and to this day they’re a little distant, but they’ve grown to appreciate one-another’s company. I do like imagining this conversation with eir:

A: tell him that that’s your ice cream cone!

M, at someone who took their ice cream: that’s my ice cream cone!

A: now, let him have it!

M: you can have it!

A: *sigh*

Moonlight and Spectrum clicked in a strange and wonderful way. Their friendship consists of them texting surreal memes to one another at 11 pm and occasionally doodling on one another’s arms and faces with makeup and taking (mostly) visually pleasing photos of the doodles in question with Moonlight’s Polaroid camera. Moonlight is one of the few people who Spectrum lets touch its hands. They are peak ADHD-autism duo.

For G’: purple… deep, otherworldly purple, the colour the universe shows you when it wants to make its presence known, the colour of the aster I once gave him before he parted and saw again the next time we met at his lapel, untouched by time, the colour of the sunset he once froze in place so we could dance in its light with the first stars in the sky…

For ⚡️: orange… vibrant, wild orange, like the colour you see through your eyelids when the sun is intent on making you forget about darkness, the colour of my hair when I dye it to match his, the colour of the peach slice he passed me when I said I was hungry after a little while of singing together, the colour of the walls of the building behind which we meet away from the peering eyes of his fans, the colour of the scarf he gifted me to remember him by when we first met…

For Sunrise: blue… soft, joyful blue, like the colour you see a patch of through your window while still in bed and smile as you know the day ahead is full of possibility, the colour the Electric Lights Orchestra sang about in ‘Mr. Blue Sky’, like the colour of the soft, loose shirt she had on over her jumper on our first date, the colour of the shallow waves on the seashore of Beginnings Bay that we run through barefoot on warm summer mornings, the colour of the necklace I made myself that she complimented, making me blush, and said she wanted a matching one…

Even though I’m a bit of an introvert and need space to function, I often find myself missing G’ if he’s apart from me for a while… not too long ago, last month, I was in a state of panic because my hyperfixation on him was fading and I wasn’t thinking of him nearly as often anymore (now I realize that it’s probably because my ‘intense squish’ phase is over and we’re just very used to one another’s presence and comfortable around each other as friends now). He has spent eternities wandering the Multiverse, occasionally with very little contact from other beings, but he’s aware of my attachment to him and will still often check on me, sometimes from outside of reality… he just really cares a lot…

I also do want to say. Heart in my Pocket now amkes me sad I know it's a love song but. I feel so bad for Sunrise like she didn't deserve to have a cute love song then. Dandy.

Augh… okay but hear me out: what if when those thoughts won’t leave her alone, she gets rid of the negative memories associated with the song by dedicating it to Moonlight, someone she can trust to always love her for who she is, instead?
