There's the distant sound of a gunshot that echoes on the wind. After a few moments, there comes another, followed by the toll of a bell somewhere deep in the heart of the crumbling city. The sound is sure to draw the attention of dead roaming around for miles. Whether it's a blessing or a curse is yet to be seen. Far less unknown is the question of who did that. From the corner of a rooftop, she slowly rests her rifle across her back again and looks down at the streets below. Watching. Waiting. - For Bailey, from Delphine
She jumped at the sound of a gunshot, semi-panicked at the second, quickly gathering her belongings as if she were ready to bolt. Though in all honesty, she kinda was. Bailey stops abruptly to the sound of the bell. It was somewhere within the city, at a distance but for her it almost felt like the damned thing was right in the building with her, booming in her ears, she had to throw her hands up to cover 'em.
As soon as she recovered, she was up on her feet, opening the door to what once was a fast food restaurant to look outside, though her eyes first darted right to where the source of the sound had come from. That would attract the dead for miles... Who was stupid enough to do that? And why?
Bailey armed herself with her pistol. Should she stay put or leave? Stay and get surrounded by walkers or leave and still get surrounded by oncoming walkers?

Well... Shit. There was a moment of silence, perhaps a little too long. That was an unexpected turn of events and she was stood silent trying to figure out what she should say, which led to an awkward lapse of time, just staring at the guy.
β I don't lie. β She blurted out. All that time and this was the best she could come up with, and that in and of itself was absolutely a lie. It was a big fat lie, yet she made the claim anyways thinking he'd actually believe it, which was stupid because she didn't even believe herself.

Hmmm... She had to think about it a moment, and then she looked at Lance. β Not always, I read a book about sloth bears once, and it's funny because β you know! Sloths are really slow, but the sloth bear isn't. β She explains rather enthusiastically, and just like that the purpose of them being here slipped her mind.
She loves bears! And now that he's shown interest in the topic, she was about to go all in. Bailey is quick to remove her backpack, dropping it on the floor and bending down to unzip and pull out her journal.
The book about sun bears is placed on the floor so she could use both hands to sift through a bunch of pages before she turned the notebook around to show Lance.
β I drew one when I had the book, β She pointed out the semi-decent sketch of a sloth bear on the page. β They look kinda funny. β She turned the journal back toward herself, she returned it to her backpack and picked up the book again to open it up, reading through a few lines on the page that it opened up on.
Her eyes narrow, but a smile graced her features and half a laugh escaped her, β Look at these guys, they almost look naked! β The book is turned so he could see the faded images, and then turned back around for her to continue gawking at. β They aren't fluffy like the other bears I've read about... β
She reads just a few more lines, and then looked back up at him. β Can I keep it? Just for now! I just wanna read it a little. β
Of course, he should've known that a decent hunter like her would have some pretty good hearing. The way she blurted the squirrels right out, followed by the finger guns did make him laugh though. Oh, what he would've done for a gun back in that place. Not to shoot whatever supernatural monstrosities had been in there of course, he knew that would've been useless. But the rats. Just shooting the fuckers instead of waiting waiting and waiting and observing, catching them barehanded.
He shivered at the memories and was pretty quick to get rid of them with a firm shake of his head, then entered the store as well. He'd never really been one for kids and the likes. Never wanted any, was never that interested in them. But goddamn. Was it a sight to behold, such a good thing honestly. To see her bouncing around without a care in the world, grin on her face, playing along with his dumb joke. Such a great contrast to everything else. Fucking wholesome, really.
"Oh nooo, please don't" he said in the most monotone voice, though there was a huge grin on Lance's face. Money didn't matter that much anymore. Not just in this ruin of a world, but to him as well. He kept strolling around the store as she beelined straight for the wildlife and science section. Sure enough, he should be heading there too. To get his read on survival techniques, hunting, and edible flora and fauna, but...man.
It'd been a while. Since he'd last been anywhere close to books. Media in general. Though most was rotten and no longer decipherable, the sheer volume of books, DVDs and CDs was overwhelming to a point where it left him somewhat stuck in place, unsure what he even wanted to check out. Luckily, Bailey was talking to him again though, made him walk over to her with an amused smirk on his face.
"I don't know. Aren't they named after the color of their fur a lot? Brown...black. Maybe this guy made people think of the sun. I'm sure you'll tell me all about it in a minute" Lance replied, watching her open the book right up.
"You really like bears, don't you."

β I care! β She says, turning away from him on the chair and shifting her journal aside on the table, anger crossed her features as she delicately dabbed a finger on the page, as if it would fix the little bit of water damage. It was nothing serious, the notebook is fine to continue using, but it ruined the sketch she did of the raccoon they seen last night. β Why are you always so mean? β

Riley? Is she deaf or just doing that on purpose? Well, whatever she was trying to do it was unfortunately working because Bailey was peeved. She said her name loud and clear, there was no way she could have possibly mistaken it for anything else. She was just being a bitch and she was stupidly letting her get under her skin.
She stood up and dusted herself off a little bit, letting out a low and aggravated groan as she shot yet another scowl at the woman. It wasn't the only face she was capable of making... But it sure was the most popular.
β I said my name is Bailey, you fucking tool. β She snarled, eyebrows pinched sharp.

Warmed up will be great! Warm food is always great... Especially when the weather gets chilly, something warm to eat helps keep you warmed up even if only for a little bit. She isn't one to be picky; can't afford to be picky in a world like this, but she still appreciates the good stuff.
Bailey backed away from the window, wiping her hand on her pant leg to clean it off and then she looked at Lian as he took a look himself. It seems safe, but speaking too soon had a way of coming back round to bite you in the ass, it's almost hard to believe that it is safe, even when it really is safe.
β Okay, β She reached for the pistol in it's holster, pulling it out and readying it for just in case. Briefly she looks over her shoulder at the door they came in from, listening to the horrid noise beyond it, the clickers. β I got your back. β
Watching her put everything into her backpack, which seemed to be bigger than it looked, Lian nodded at her suggestion to make a campfire anyway to warm up the food they found. Hot or cold didn't matter to him, but if there was a chance to heat something, why not just treat yourself to that luxury?
"Tonight we'll treat ourselves properly," he chuckled, still pleased to be able to fill his stomach.
Stepping next to Bailey, Lian glanced through the dirty window, but couldn't spot any threat outside either. "Okay," he muttered before slowly turning the handle to open one quietly. With a sharp tug, he pulled it open and waited a moment to see if anything stirred outside. No infected, no people, no traps. At least at first glance.
"I'll see if it's safe."

This is so stupid. It would be so much easier to just put it on and stop arguing, get it over with. But why go the easy route when she could make things hard instead? Besides, she was stubborn and no one had the right to tell her what to do. It wasn't necessary at all and they both knew it.
It's been years since she's worn one of these things, she didn't need to and thank god... It's uncomfortable, it's clunky, it looks funny, it smells weird and fucked with her sense of smell and it was unnecessary. Where's the benefit?
β Right, so if I put it on it'll prevent me from getting ripped apart? β She said, or rather mocked, teetering the mask in either hand and tipping her head to the side ever so slightly, β Will it make me bullet proof too? β Bailey snickered. β Or maybe it'll just turn me invisible. β Yes she was being a bitch on purpose.

She wasn't wrong but she also couldn't really agree with it all either, probably out of pure stubbornness but this lady had no idea what she's been through or why she is the way that she is. Having people to worry about is what worries her to begin with. Life isn't without risk, though, she was certainly correct about that one. Choosing which risks to take is hard.
Bailey doesn't say anything but anyone could tell just by looking at her face, she definitely wasn't happy. At this point anything that came out of her mouth would likely just be to disagree and argue against whatever the other said just out of sheer spite. But, alas, she chooses not to say anything. The expression on her face spoke well enough for her. A lot of anger in a small body...
Though at least all that anger loosened up when the woman introduced herself, giving a name to the face. Sydney. The girl shifted on her feet, her head dropped and as she pondered whether or not to give her name, she stared at the corpses of walkers on the ground.
Her arms swing out as she lifted her head, β My name is Bailey. β

The girl has effectively shut down, and Kira canβt help but feel bad. But why would she?! This girl has been nothing but trouble! Pouting and whining and stealing from her. Regardless of howΒ βniceβ the robbery was!
Was it solely because she was basically a child? Regardless of how hardened she was? She was still⦠hopeful?
Kiraβs pausing, glancing to the store and back to the girl who refused to look at anything but her own feet. A sort of anxiety building in her chest ofΒ βto go or not to goβ.
βUggghhhaaahhh! God damn you-! Come on then-!β
Kira stomps into the direction of the building, and as she passes the girl, she tugs her coat in the right direction.
βWeβre going. Because nowΒ IΒ gotta now if this stupid building has anything. But if I die- I donβt wanna hear any whining in the afterlife how you donβt have no one to talk to in this area now. No one to rob boo hoo. Pick up the pace, no dragging your feet.β
Kira didnβt care what was in this building. Not enough to be responsible for the girlβs life. But the girl cared.
And thatβs all that mattered.
She was dragging her feet along, staring down and watching the little rocks and the dirt that sheβd kick up. Yeah she was sulking, but sheβd get over it eventually. Her head lifted slightly to look to Kira for a moment when she had paused, and she herself had stopped as well, eyebrows pinched gently. The last thing she expected was for her to change her mind and give in to what she had wanted.Β
Like a switch had flipped, Bailey perked right up as they came to where the front doors of the grocery store used to be. An absolute wreck, but they were here now and she wasnβt going to let this victory go to waste. So she bounced inside to find and pick an aisle to start down.Β
The floors were riddled in trash, dirt and leaves that blew in over time and settled about or in the corners against the walls. The shelves are probably all picked clean, all in disarray, caked in dust. It really is just a shell of what it once was.Β

Huh... She should feel comfortable with the answer. But somehow, her heart still beat a little too quickly. Sure hoped she wouldn't find a use for killing her overnight; the humor may have gone right up and over her head, but it was easy for any such humor to fly right over given she had no established trust with this person.
She stood up, a tired grunt pushed through her lips and she turned her head around to see where she meant. A meek smile came to her face and she moved to follow Aya, the stuffed bear in one arm and the other hand carried her backpack.
She walks past her into the room to have a quick look around. What it looked like didn't matter, but how secure it is did. The window is barricaded, but... She stepped around the door momentarily to check, no lock on the door. No problem; she'll just sleep with a knife under the pillow. She's a light sleeper; most the time, but in a home with someone new? She won't be sleeping like she usually does.
β Thanks... β Bailey glanced at the flashlight, then at Aya, and then at the bed as she stepped toward it to sit down on the mattress, dropping her bag on the floor beside it. β So uh, are you staying up longer? I guess I'll... See you tomorrow? β
"If you don't want to kill me first, the chances of that are pretty slim. So⦠don't worry. I have no use for killing you", Aya countered her with the same kind of humor, a grin tugging at the corner of her lips.
"Back there." Showing her the room she hadn't used as a bedroom before because she thought it safer to sleep right by the door, she straightened up and motioned for Bailey to follow her. "There's plenty of room for Teddy, too, of course."
The room was dark because the only window had been barricaded with wooden boards, but just in case, Aya pointed to a flashlight that stood beside the bed. "If you have to go to the bathroom at night," she joked.

β Cause it's mine, β She spits the answer as if Blaine merely asking about was enough to sour her mood. It wasn't him, though, he didn't really do anything wrong. She just didn't feel up to talking about why it was so important; she didn't want to think about the why because it would only dig up the memory of all her losses.
β So keep your hands to yourself. β Bailey added as she turned just slightly away from her, her grip on the old teddy bear tightened. She was very possessive of it, didn't want anybody else to touch it.

She hadn't even enough time to scream when they fell, nor did they really have enough time to investigate or really even take in their surroundings before Ellie was up and helping her to her own feet. They couldn't stop here, they had to keep going... So they ran, for what felt like forever but at least the sounds of infected eventually began to die out, further and further the sounds became distant and perhaps they could say they were safe to relax.
That is until she was yanked aside, pulled to kneel behind some old looking electrical box. That's when she realized that were in fact not safe. Bailey peaked up from behind to peer into the distance, and ducked back down when she seen the large and bloated infected person shuffle by a broken window. A damn bloater β and the smell that came from it was putrid, she couldn't help but grimace.
When she looked at Ellie, the tension on her face lightened with uncertainty, β Why are you looking at me like that? β Then she froze... Oh fuck. A quick glance at their surroundings would answer that question; the basement is chocked full of fucking spores!
In a harsh whisper, β Oh shit! Ellie β β But she cut herself off as she grabbed hold of the other girl's coat. She wasn't coughing. No symptoms. β You aren't coughing. β She says aloud, although it was more of a personal observation, but that can't be. Anybody who breathes in this shit gets infected right away, there's no way...

a closed starter for @divxne-calcmityββs CrestΒ
As bad as this storm was, at least there was no thunder. Just rain... Lots, and lots of rain. It was pouring down in buckets and she could barely see through it all, she was drenched and to make matters worse she was somewhere in the woods. Where, she didnβt fucking know, but she was starting to shiver from the cold and losing hope that sheβd find any shelter from the rain. At this point, sheβd take a rock to hide under.Β
But luck would eventually be on her side, finally, after all the endless wandering she spotted a cave. As soon as her eyes landed on the entrance to the large cave, she ran toward it to get out of the rain, a few several feet inside before she turned around to look outside. She was still a little cold but at least she wasnβt stuck in the rain anymore.Β
Her fingers brushed the left side of her hair over her ear, a sigh of relief through parted lips, eyes closed briefly. It certainly wasnβt ideal but staying in a cave was better than ending up passed out in the rain. Itβs not so bad, really... Besides not having any dry clothes and being lost somewhere in the woods. But it could be worse, it really could. Look on the bright side, youβre still breathing. Oh, and the rain may suck, but itβs free water.Β
Bailey inhaled deeply and exhaled quietly, turning back around to face the darkness of the caveβs depth. Big cave, which meant she should probably look around before assuming itβs safe to settle. She turned her flashlight on that was bound to the strap of her bag.Β
