A few visitors to the cabin take both Bucky and you by surprise, and the sweet, kind creatures were as curious about you as you were of them.

It was one of the rare slow days โ€” a quiet, restful reprieve before the real hustle and bustle of the final days before Christmas began in earnest. Bucky was determinedly making the most of it.ย
You were cosied up on the couch in the living room while the fireplace crackled and glowed with flames that warmed the chilled room. The dogs were snoozing in their beds and their snuffled snores filled the comfortable silence, when you felt the mass of flannel and muscle shift beside you.ย
Bucky was curled up on the couch next to you, his head resting comfortably on your thigh, while his nose was buried in his new book. It was only with a slight sense of mischief did you occasionally run your hands through his hair, smiling at the shiver that ricocheted down his spine and the small noise of contentment he made.
โ€œโ€˜M tryna focus, Clover,โ€ he protested with no real conviction. You hummed an apology and stopped the ministrations of your hand to rest it on your thigh, just above his head.ย
There was a beat of silence, then, โ€œWaitโ€“ I didnโ€™tโ€“โ€ Bucky said, looking up at you confusedly, and he blindly reached for your hand to grab it with his. โ€œWhereโ€“?โ€ You couldnโ€™t help the huffed laugh that escaped when he finally found your hand and moved it back to where you had taken it from โ€” the locks of brown hair parted around your fingertips. โ€œPlease.โ€
You quietly chuckled and continued to run a hand through his hair.ย
Something suddenly moved in your peripheral vision, and you looked up. Koda had sat up, too โ€” her ears were perked forward and her gaze sharp out the window and towards the trees outside of the cabin.ย
โ€œWhat is it, baby?โ€ you asked as Bucky sat up to look for the source of her fixation.ย
Koda barked and huffed; her shuffling paws clicked against the wooden floor. The window misted over where her nose was shoved against the glass pane.ย
โ€œOhโ€“ Look, Cloverโ€”cโ€™mere, look!โ€ Bucky rushed as he got to his feet.ย
You glanced at him, then back out of the window โ€” a small herd of deer, no more than five of the creatures, were slowly, cautiously appearing between the trees. โ€œOh, goodness.โ€
โ€œQuick, get your camera, baby,โ€ Bucky whispered, and he dashed towards the door to get your coats. โ€œIf we go slow, maybe theyโ€™ll let you take pictures!โ€ The dogs moved to follow him, but he turned on the spot and placed a hand over their muzzles to hush their small, excited yips. โ€œNo, youโ€™ll only scare โ€˜emโ€”shh, quiet!โ€
They tried to whine and bark, but he held fast.ย
You chuckled quietly and strode to the bookshelf, where your camera awaited. The treasured device rested against your chest while you adjusted the strap to sit comfortably around your neck, when Bucky suddenly said, โ€œWait, I know.โ€ He dashed into the kitchen, only to reappear a few seconds later with two bones. A brown paper bag was stuffed into his coat pocket.ย
The appearance of the dogโ€™s favourite treat made their tails thump on the wooden floor, and Bucky tossed the two cuts towards their beds. โ€œNow quiet down.โ€ย
โ€œBuck, what have you got thereโ€“โ€ย
โ€œCorn,โ€ he answered, and he grabbed your hand to pull you towards the door, his smile brighter than the white snow that covered the ground outside.ย
The air was frigid and still, but when the deer spotted the two of you on the few steps of the porch, they lifted their noses and sniffed the air. โ€œAre they tame?โ€ you wondered aloud, looking at Bucky from the corner of your eye. โ€œDid youโ€“?โ€
โ€œIโ€™ve only seen one herd in these parts,โ€ he mumbled in reply, and he squinted his eyes at the visitors. โ€œWait here.โ€
You did so, perched on the step with your camera in hand while Bucky steadily but slowly walked forward, his soft voice cooing reassurances and quiet nothings to the herd.ย
It was only when a much smaller deer โ€” a fawn with gangly, long legs, and overly large ears stepped out from behind a tree with a doe did you truly struggle in restraining the glee that vibrated through your limbs. They were a beautiful sight to behold, truly sweet and innocent.
Bucky made a noise of surprise before he turned back to you, a wide grin tugging at his lips. โ€œThis is the herd that comes โ€˜roundโ€”I rescued the fawnโ€™s mom.โ€
The snow crunched under Buckyโ€™s boots as he walked towards the herd, a hand outstretched in an offering to greet them in the best way they understood. A softer, fluffier dusting of snow covered their pelts like a second skin, adding to the white, mottled spots of their coats and making the softer browns richer in tone.ย
You could not turn the camera on fast enough. It whirred to life just as Bucky reached them and through the lens, you zoomed in to better capture their beauty. The mother of the fawn stretched her neck out to sniff at Buckyโ€™s hand, and you snapped a few photographs while being mindful of keeping your happiness contained โ€” they would spook at any loud, sudden noise.ย
From across the yard, Bucky called you over. โ€œCโ€™mere, baby. Come and say hello.โ€
The camera clicked one final time, and you pulled the screen from your line of sight, only to gasp in surprise. Bucky was standing among the herd, his hands outstretched and heaped with corn while he laughed at the does that were curious โ€” their noses followed his movements with keen interest.
He laughed as one of them stuck their nose into his coat pocket, searching for more snacks. โ€œThey love the corn, come anโ€™ give โ€˜em some for your photos.โ€
โ€œOkay,โ€ you said nervously, and you stepped forward, moving slower and slower as you neared the clustered herd. โ€œTheyโ€™re notโ€“โ€
โ€œNah, theyโ€™re okay,โ€ Bucky assured, and he gestured for you to hold your hand out. โ€œHere, give โ€˜em some, then theyโ€™ll love you.โ€
The corn was heaped into your hand, and you offered it to the nearest deer, who, much to Buckyโ€™s amusement, turned their nose up at it. You frowned, disheartened at her rejection, but then the small fawn wandered over, their long legs unsteady in the snow. โ€œHello, little one,โ€ you whispered, and you offered your hand, palm flat and low to the ground.ย
โ€œThatโ€™s it, baby,โ€ Bucky praised โ€” you looked up from the fawn and saw him petting the mother, her nose shoved into his other hand while she chewed heartily. The fond smile on his lips made your chest warm in admiration. โ€œIt was years ago now. Freezinโ€™ cold winter and I thought she wouldnโ€™t make it. Somehow, I scared the bear that was attackinโ€™ her off and took her back home,โ€ he explained. โ€œTook a few weeks, and a lotta patience, but sheโ€™s right as rain now, arenโ€™t you, little one?โ€
A small noise escaped between the doeโ€™s enthusiastic chewing, when you felt a small push against your fingers. You gasped quietly and looked down โ€” the fawnโ€™s nose was an inch away from the corn scattered over your palm, its little nose twitching as it sniffed. โ€œHello,โ€ you said, even quieter than before.ย
The wet nose brushed over your skin, and then the fawn nibbled at the corn, its teeth scraping against your palm; a ticklish sensation you donโ€™t think you could ever describe. You lifted the camera from your chest and snapped a few photos, unable to stop the smile spreading over your lips as the fawn ate and ate, content as could be. โ€œOh, theyโ€™re beautiful.โ€
โ€œArenโ€™t they?โ€ Bucky said happily.ย
While you were distracted with the fawn, there was the sound of crunching hoofbeats to your side, and suddenly, a very wet muzzle on your cheek. โ€œOh!โ€ย
The doe that Bucky was petting just a moment ago was staring at you curiously, her dark eyes somehow staring straight through you and deep into your soul โ€” it was a piercing, assessing gaze, but you swallowed your fright and offered the hand that held the camera. โ€œHi, there,โ€ you said.ย
โ€œQuick, take a shot,โ€ Bucky rushed, his voice a hushed whisper. โ€œBefore she gets bored.โ€
โ€œAlright,โ€ you said, dubiously believing that she would stay still. The camera shook in your hand, and you took a deep breath, steadying your nerves at being so close to a docile, but wild creature. โ€œSmile for me, love.โ€
To your utter disbelief, the doe sniffed at the camera and stayed as still as a statue while you took shot, after shot, after shot. Her eyes twinkled from the Christmas lights over the cabin, and the contrast to the black of her eyes was striking โ€” natureโ€™s beauty melded with the wonders of man.ย
โ€œBeautifulโ€”absolutely beautiful,โ€ you breathed, lowering the camera.ย
Bucky grinned and moved to stand next to you. The deer appeared to have their fill of interaction, and they turned to leave, their pace as relaxed as could be โ€” quite the difference to the leaps and bounds of the herds you passed while driving your truck by them on the roads.ย
โ€œThat was amazing.โ€
Bucky looked at you, then turned his attention back to the retreating herd. โ€œIt was, and I got to experience it with my girl.โ€

You had always had the biggest Halloween and spooky spirit โ€” every fall was a haven for you, and this year, you had the opportunity to harness the ultimate joy of surprising James when he came home after a long day. His reaction, however, left you speechless and stunned; wishing for every season to become fall.ย

The air was warm and filled with the aromas of a freshly cooked dinner. Wood cracked and burned in the fireplace as you sat on the couch, legs tucked under you with a blanket on your lap. It was late in the afternoon and Bucky was due home any minute now โ€“ Sam had called him on site for just a favour that ended up taking up the whole of his day.ย
You werenโ€™t mad, though. In the time that Bucky had spent on site, you had elected to have some Halloween fun with Sarge and Koda โ€“ both of which were cuddled on the couch next to you. Sargeโ€™s head rested on your thigh, and Kodaโ€™s head was propped up on Sargeโ€™s back.ย
It would have been peaceful. No different than any other night that you spent reading or relaxing, if it werenโ€™t for your stifled giggles.ย
Sarge โ€“ looking as broody as he always did โ€“ was indifferent to the small hat that had black horns sticking up and out from between his ears. Or the red vest with two wings sprouting from his shoulders. A red, pointed tail was sewn onto the end of it and it laid curled next to his own fluffy (and still) tail.ย
Behind Sarge, Koda stirred, blinking and huffing as she woke up from her nap. The orange hat she wore had a green stump, perfectly resembling a pumpkin top. Her brown, fluffy body was covered in an orange vest, striped with a darker hued orange to give the illusion of a round pumpkin. She stared at you with her soft, dark eyes, and you smiled. โ€œYouโ€™re so adorable, baby girl.โ€ย
Tires crunched over gravel outside and then light flooded the living room of the cabin โ€“ Buckyโ€™s truck had just pulled in. Your heart skipped a beat as you struggled to move under the weight of a still slumbering Sarge. โ€œHeโ€™s homeโ€“daddyโ€™s home, wake up, Sarge.โ€ย
Both dogs sprung to life and ambled to the front door just as the engine of the truck cut out, and the thud of the driverโ€™s door closing sounded. It was music to your ears after such a long day. The dogs yipped and jumped over one another in their excitement. โ€œDown, down, settleโ€“here,โ€ you said, rushing to open the door. โ€œGo on.โ€
โ€œHey, love,โ€ Bucky called from the stone path to the front door, but he was looking towards his truck as the alarm chirped. He was still wearing his red plaid jacket and light denim jeans, though they were covered in wood dust, and the bun he had thrown his hair up in that morning before he left was gone, instead, his long hair flowed down his neck and over the collar of his shirt.ย
You sighed softly as you watched him shove his truck keys in his back pocket. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry I was gone so long, sweetheart. I tried gettinโ€™ away but you know Sam. And then fuckinโ€™ Steve, I swear to- What theโ€“?โ€ He stopped by the flower bed, his widening eyes downcast towards the dogs that were jumping up at him for attention.ย
โ€œWelcome home, babe,โ€ you said, cocking out a hip to lean against the porch rail. โ€œI made dinnerโ€“you hungry?โ€
Bucky stared up at you, slack jawed. โ€œWhat did you do to them?โ€
โ€œThe dogs?โ€ you asked, arching a brow. โ€œI got them ready for Halloween, James.โ€
โ€œHalloween,โ€ he repeated as he glanced back down again. โ€œYou- When did you get these coats? And the hats?โ€
โ€œWands helped me.โ€ The wood beneath your feet creaked as you stepped down onto the path. Sarge and Koda paid no mind to you as you neared โ€“ their attention entirely captivated by Bucky. โ€œArenโ€™t they adorable?โ€
Slowly, Bucky looked back up at you, then back at the dogs that jumped up his legs. Suddenly, he dropped his work bag and fell to his knees, a wide smile on his face that made his nose scrunch and eyes squint. โ€œThey are more than adorable,โ€ he cooed, holding Kodaโ€™s face in his callused hands. He kissed her nose then hugged Sarge. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me sooner, baby? I wouldโ€™a picked up some pumpkins or somethinโ€™!โ€
You watched, amused, when Buckyโ€™s bright eyes widened just as they always did when he had an idea, or a plan. โ€œWe need a photoshootโ€“get your camera!โ€
โ€œBabe, wait,โ€ you called, laughing as Bucky sprang to his feet and ran inside, presumably to look for your camera. โ€œI can go get some pumpkins tomorrow.โ€
โ€œNo!โ€ Buckyโ€™s yell was muffled, like he was on the other side of the cabin. โ€œWe gotta do it now, just look at โ€˜em.โ€ He popped his head around the door and you laughed โ€“ he looked just like his dogs when they were excited about something, a treat or a toy. โ€œWhat?โ€
โ€œNothing, youโ€™re just adorable.โ€ Bucky blushed and bounded down the steps. โ€œDo you want to take photos now, or wait for tomorrowโ€“when I get the pumpkins?โ€
โ€œBoth.โ€ He shrugged and looked down at his dogs. โ€œThey deserve thatโ€“do it every day, if you could. Youโ€™re so good at it, sweetheart.โ€
โ€œFlattery will get you somewhere,โ€ you teased, and you grabbed the camera from his hands. โ€œAlright, youโ€™ve convinced me. Letโ€™s take some before it gets too dark and then you can help me plan tomorrowโ€™s shoot.โ€
Bucky grinned, a beautiful sight, and before he could change his expression, you snapped a photo. โ€œFor my personal collection.โ€
โ€œYou can take as many as you want, Clover,โ€ he promised earnestly. โ€œSo long as I get to see your pretty face light up while you do it. Fuck, I love you.โ€ You blinked at his words, unable to take them in, and then Bucky kissed you on the cheek before he ran off with the two costumed pooches in tow. โ€œCโ€™mon, letโ€™s go!โ€
Your fingers brushed where his lips had connected, and your heart bloomed with warmth. If you got to experience his joy just from taking photographs โ€“ you decided then and there that you would never put your camera down. โ€œComing!โ€

The return of your best friend was something that made your heart flutter and beat to the rhythm of his words, but there he was, framed before you like the mountain peaks of your small town, and he had a secret โ€” a secret that would change everything.

The air was crisp with freshly fallen snow, and the mountain peaks in the backdrop of your small town were dusted with a coat of white โ€“ a picturesque view for the drive to work, with the heaters of your truck on full blast, of course.ย
Music played quietly over the speakers as you hummed along, content and happy for the opportunistic day. Business had been booming. Your shop had turned into quite the hive of activity in the past few weeks from the season change โ€“ spring was on the way, and with it, came endless possibilities.ย
It also meant that James would be setting out to start work for the busiest period of the year, given the blistering winter that had hammered your small town left the woods treacherous and dangerous, even for a man of his skill and wit.ย
A lumberjackโ€™s work was never easy.
Your shop โ€“ a perfect mix of a bakery, cafe, and bookstore โ€“ came into view as you turned the corner, the snow tires of your old truck crunching over the road. The sun was only just peeking over the horizon so the warm tones of the wood frames of the outside looked bleak. โ€œNeed to get some hardy vinesโ€ฆโ€ you mumbled, pulling into your parking space.ย
โ€œMorning, babe,โ€ a voice called. You looked up from your keys to find Wanda โ€“ the townโ€™s florist, and your best friend.ย
โ€œHey, you,โ€ you returned, smiling happily. The click of the door lock sounded and you looked down to check it. โ€œI canโ€™t wait for this chill to be gone. Howโ€™re you?โ€
Wanda chuckled. โ€œSame old, same old.โ€ย
There was a sly smirk on her lips when you glanced up again, and you narrowed your eyes. โ€œWhat are you planning? I know that look.โ€
โ€œBucky is coming into town today, or so, the rumours sayโ€ฆโ€
โ€œOh my god,โ€ you grumbled. โ€œNot again. Yes, I know. And I am looking forward to seeing him.โ€
โ€œMaybe you couldโ€“?โ€
You sighed heavily, knowing all too well what she was implying โ€“ having fallen head over heels for the mountain of a brooding bear that was your best friend. โ€œNo, Wands. I donโ€™t want to lose what I have all because I canโ€™t get my head outta the clouds, you know that. Besides, I am also looking forward to seeing my babies, Koda and Sarge.โ€
Wanda hummed happily. โ€œI do miss those balls of fluff. You make sure you give them kisses from me, alright?โ€
โ€œOh, I will. Have a good day, babe.โ€ You waved goodbye as Wanda turned to walk down the street to her shop.ย
The lights flicked on and your little slice of heaven came to life. Warm lights blazed over the earthy tones of browns and greens spread over the interior โ€“ golden spines of books shone, and the reflection of light on the glass display made you feel at home. Even though it had only been a few hours since you were last in your shop, coming back to it was like a tight, comforting hug.ย
โ€œLetโ€™s get this day started, huh?โ€ You said happily, taking off your coat and switching on the heater, all the while walking towards the counter.ย
An hour later, the shop was filled with the smell of freshly baking bread, and the sweet smell of breakfast pastries. Coffee was brewing and the morning rush had just started โ€“ and your first customer? Steve, Buckyโ€™s best friend.ย
โ€œHey, love,โ€ Steve greeted, his hair packed under a dark blue beanie while his broad chest was covered in red plaid. His smile was contagious and unusually bright, and you couldnโ€™t help but beam back at the bearded lumberjack. โ€œHowโ€™ve you been? Keepinโ€™ warm?โ€
โ€œStevie,โ€ you breathed, rounding the corner of the counter to pull him into a tight embrace. โ€œI have been great, keeping busy.โ€ Pulling back, you moved back behind the counter and began the process of making his usual order. โ€œHow about you? How is Cap?โ€
โ€œCausinโ€™ trouble as always,โ€ Steve said fondly, shaking his head. โ€œThe ball of fluff is in my truck, waitinโ€™ ever impatiently for his puppacino.โ€
โ€œWait.โ€ You paused in making Steveโ€™s order to stare at him incredulously. โ€œYou brought my boy all the way here, and yet, youโ€™re making him wait in the car.โ€ The look on Steveโ€™s face bled sheepishness, a sharp contrast to his goofy nature, but you didnโ€™t let up. โ€œSteven Grantโ€“you get out that door and you bring that good boy into my shop.โ€
If Steve had a tail, it would have been pulled between his legs as he slunk out the door to his truck. Not even a moment later, the barking of an over-excited Cap could be heard over Steveโ€™s yell of, โ€œEasy, boy! Down!โ€ย
The door of your shop swung open, and a giant ball of fur bounded your way, tongue lolling, and black and white coat moving with his powerful muscles. โ€œCap!โ€ you yelled, falling to your knees to greet the Malamute. โ€œHey, boy! Oh my gosh, look atchu!โ€
โ€œItโ€™s like you didnโ€™t see him the other damn day,โ€ Steve said, a ghost of a laugh in his words. โ€œDrama queens, the pair aโ€™you.โ€
โ€œDonโ€™t you dare insult my boy, Rogers,โ€ you huffed, squishing Capโ€™s cheeks. The Malamute only opened his mouth in what could be perceived as one big smile. โ€œHe is precious, and for that, he is getting an extra treat.โ€
After sending Steve and Cap on their way, the morning rush began in earnest as the sun rose in the sky โ€“ casting yellow rays through the big windows that lined the front of your shop. People flocked to and fro on the sidewalk outside, stopping in for a steaming hot beverage or a sweet treat, and you felt at ease, falling into routine like a well oiled machine.ย
It was only when it hit nine oโ€™clock did the hustle and bustle pass, and you worked at a more sedate pace. The display case of baked treats was considerably much emptier than when you opened for the day, and you grabbed two trays full of cookies to restock for the imminent lunch rush, when the bell sounded at the door.
You smiled and turned to greet the customer, only to freeze; the air in your lungs evaporating into nothing at the sight silhouetted by the sun.ย
โ€œJames,โ€ you rushed, eyes wide, and smile even wider. โ€œOh, itโ€™s so good to see you!โ€
The mountain that was your best friend stood in the doorway, a small smile on his full lips as he looked at you with such softness it turned your legs to jelly. His big boots were covered by black jeans that hugged his thighs, a dark blue and black plaid jacket stretched over his wide shoulders, and his long hair fell down in a swoop under his upturned collar.ย
Bucky opened his arms wide. โ€œHey, darlinโ€™,โ€ he said, tone gravelly and eyes bright. โ€œNeed my Clover to come anโ€™ gimme a hug.โ€
The trays lay abandoned on the display, and you ran to Bucky, giggling all the way and colliding with his chest. โ€œOof!โ€ He grunted, wrapping his arms around your shoulders and lower back. โ€œFuck, itโ€™s good to see you, sweetheart. How have you been, huh?โ€
โ€œGood, good! Itโ€™s been so lonely without you here!โ€ you gushed, pulling back to look at him. He had a dark shadow of a beard on his jaw, and his smile framed his handsome face perfectly. โ€œHow was the scouting? How are you?โ€
Bucky gave you one last squeeze and threw an arm over your shoulder, walking you to a couch in the reading nook in the back corner. โ€œIt was boring, as usualโ€“should be ready to start this logging season. And Iโ€™m good, Sarge and Koda missed you, too. Almost as much as I did.โ€
โ€œOh, my babies,โ€ you cooed, wrapping your arms around his middle so you could squeeze him tightly. โ€œAlright, sit down and Iโ€™ll knock somethinโ€™ together for you.โ€
โ€œYou betcha,โ€ Bucky said. The couch creaked under him and he groaned loudly. โ€œFuck, this couch is my favourite fuckinโ€™ thingโ€“โ€
โ€œI thought I was,โ€ you interrupted, pouting at him. Bucky laughed.ย
The hiss of the coffee machine filled the comfortable silence, when you realised something. โ€œWait, where are my babies, James?โ€ Bucky froze on the couch, and eyed you apprehensively โ€“ the action made you put your hands on your hips and stare at him pointedly. โ€œWhere are my babies?โ€ you asked again.
โ€œI left them in the truck because I needed a damn minute of silence, and Iwantedyoutomyselfforaminuteโ€ฆโ€ The last part was a rushed mumble, and you blinked.
โ€œWait, what?โ€
โ€œNothinโ€™,โ€ Bucky hastily said, and he stood from the couch. Another loud groan left his lips as he stretched โ€“ if you stared while his eyes were closed, that was your business. โ€œIโ€™ll go get โ€˜em.โ€
โ€œGood, you do that, mister,โ€ you huffed. โ€œComing in here without my babies. No wonder why you and Stevie are best friends.โ€
The comment made a loud howl of laughter to leave Bucky as he opened the door, and walked out. You shook your head fondly and made a round of two puppuccinos โ€“ extra large.ย
โ€œSarge, heel. Good boyโ€“no, Koda, baby, ah, fuck it,โ€ Bucky rambled from just outside the shop, and you watched through the window as two giant balls of fur ran around his legs, bounding and yipping for all their worth. โ€œYes, youโ€™re seeinโ€™ her! Calm down, easy.โ€
You laughed and strode around the corner to take a seat on the couch that Bucky had occupied just moments before โ€“ the two dogs that would burst through that door any second would have no qualms on bowling you over if you knelt on the wooden floor.ย
โ€œAlright, goddamn it, guys,โ€ Bucky groaned, fending off paws and wet noses. โ€œI open this door, and you two better be on your best behaviour.โ€ Two loud barks answered his words, and the door flew open with a clatter of the bell.ย
The same two balls of fur and fluff barrelled into the (thankfully, empty) shop, looking around for their friend, until they spotted you at last. โ€œMy babies!โ€ย
You were lost in a flurry of black, white, and brown fur. โ€œOh my gosh, yesyesyes,โ€ you gasped, shaking your head side to side to abate the worst of the incessant licks to your face. โ€œHi babies! Oh, lookatchu!โ€
A quiet chuckle sounded from above you, and you opened your eyes to find Bucky looming over you, phone in hand. โ€œAre you recording my deathโ€“my death by fur and fluffiness?โ€
โ€œYep,โ€ Bucky replied, grinning. โ€œGotta give somethinโ€™ to everyone to remember you by.โ€
You rolled your eyes and attempted to sit up, though it was impossible with Koda laying over you, and Sarge hogging your legs. โ€œBarnes, help me.โ€
โ€œNope.โ€ He smirked, plopping down on the couch, right next to your head. โ€œYou can stay there for a lilโ€™ while longer, darlinโ€™.โ€
โ€œYou are the worst,โ€ you groaned. โ€œThese babies are heavy. Fine. I will be crushed and itโ€™ll be your fault.โ€ย
Bucky only shrugged and slid down the couch cushions, then he gently moved your head so you could rest it on his thigh. โ€œThank you,โ€ you hummed, and Bucky smiled, his hand resting on your shoulder.ย
Silence fell between you two โ€“ the comfortable kind that was shared so often when you both were just content to be in one anotherโ€™s presence.ย
โ€œIโ€™ve fuckinโ€™ missed you, Clover,โ€ Bucky mumbled, and his hand moved to cup your jaw, his thumb brushing your cheek gently, lovingly. The rough skin of his hand was warm and it made something clunk in your mind โ€“ you could only hope it wouldnโ€™t show on your face. โ€œSo damn much. I hate goinโ€™ scoutinโ€™โ€“rather be home, here.โ€
You looked up at Bucky from your vantage point โ€“ his upside down face and thoughtful gaze, a small frown on his lips.ย
โ€œI know, I know, Jamie. I know,โ€ you whispered soothingly back, running one hand through Kodaโ€™s black fur, and moving the other one to rest over Buckyโ€™s. โ€œBut youโ€™re here now, you know I will always wait for youโ€“youโ€™re my best friend.โ€
The small frown turned into a fond smile. โ€œLuckiest fella, I am. Havinโ€™ a sweetheart like you to call hisโ€“โ€
Your heart seized. The words, while you knew they didnโ€™t mean what you hoped for, still hit like a punch to the guts, and it was an effort to keep your face blank and void of the realisation. You wanted Bucky, and for much more than just a best friend.ย
โ€œโ€“Girl, huh? Why donโ€™t we get an early lunch, darlinโ€™?โ€
โ€œI own the best cafe, James.โ€ย
Bucky laughed at your comment and shook his head. โ€œI didnโ€™t say we couldnโ€™t have lunch here, you dork. Why donโ€™t you make it to go, and we take my truck out to the clearinโ€™?โ€
โ€œOkay,โ€ you agreed. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€
Half an hour later, you brought a basket to the counter and pointed to it. โ€œLunch, and you get to carry it because it is heavy.โ€
โ€œYou just want an excuse to see me be a man, sweetheart,โ€ Bucky teased, and you narrowed your eyes.ย
โ€œShut up, you idiot. Now, cโ€™mon,โ€ you urged, โ€œI gotta be back for the actual lunch rush.โ€
Bucky saluted and took the aforementioned basket, only for his eyes to widen. โ€œThe hell you pack in this? Bricks?โ€
โ€œI packed for Koda and Sarge,โ€ you said simply, shrugging one shoulder. The two dogs ran to the door after Bucky, and you followed, your heart in your throat.ย
The drive to the clearing was pleasant, if only chilly โ€“ but it gave you the excuse to steal one of Buckyโ€™s good jackets from the back seat. He only rolled his eyes and pulled into a parking spot. โ€œSure, you can use one,โ€ he said, โ€œDonโ€™t want my darlinโ€™ gettinโ€™ cold now, do I?โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ you replied smugly. โ€œThank you.โ€
Bucky snorted and opened the door, sliding out. โ€œKoda, Sarge, cโ€™mon.โ€ The two dogs jumped from the car and bounded into the trees, kicking grass and snow up in their wake.ย
Something felt off, however โ€“ a sense of impending something was hanging tantalisingly over your head. Something was going to happen, and you had no idea what it could have been. You swallowed thickly, and opened your door to exit the warm cabin of Buckyโ€™s truck. โ€œItโ€™s not that bad out here, thank god,โ€ you commented.
It was the truth. The sun had warmed the chill in the air to be bearable, and while the snow hadnโ€™t fully melted just yet, it was stunningly pretty to see the light bounce off crisp white mounds โ€“ that both Koda and Sarge barrelled through, their coats becoming covered in the soft snow.ย
โ€œSure is pretty,โ€ Bucky affirmed, smiling at you โ€“ and the feeling of apprehension doubled in intensity. โ€œLetโ€™s dig in, Iโ€™m starvinโ€™.โ€
โ€œOne thing we can agree on,โ€ you hummed, walking to a picnic table under a gazebo. โ€œI packed extra because you are a garbage disposal.โ€ย
โ€œHey!โ€ Bucky chided. โ€œAinโ€™t my fault that Iโ€™m a growinโ€™ man, alright?โ€
You raised a brow and stared at him, and then you broke into a fit of laughter as Bucky scowled. โ€œYouโ€™re not wrong, Jamieโ€“you look like a bear on steroids. Have you been weightlifting trees?โ€
It was Buckyโ€™s turn to laugh. โ€œWell, itโ€™s my job, sweetheart, kinda have to lift them somehow.โ€
You shrugged. โ€œI dunno, I would have thought you wrestled with a bear, considering youโ€™re one of โ€˜em now.โ€ The urge to repeat the joke you had made with him became overwhelming. โ€œYou could sayโ€ฆ youโ€™re a Bucky Bear.โ€
โ€œHa ha,โ€ Bucky deadpanned, reaching for the basket. โ€œReal funny, Cloverโ€“real funny.โ€
The meal passed in spurs of conversation โ€“ you caught Bucky up on the gossip of the town and what Wanda had been up to, and then Bucky caught you up on Steve and Samโ€™s ventures on site, or how they wouldnโ€™t stop teasing him about a situation that he refused to divulge.ย
โ€œSo,โ€ you began, watching Buckyโ€™s flickering gaze, and how his hands wouldnโ€™t stop fidgeting. โ€œWhat did Stevie and Sam tease you for?โ€ Taking a bite of your lunch, you chewed slowly, growing increasingly intrigued by Buckyโ€™s show of nerves.ย
โ€œYโ€™know, normal shit,โ€ Bucky said evasively, โ€œthey were beinโ€™ assholes, like usual.โ€
Deciding to poke the bear, you probed further. โ€œDoesnโ€™t sound like itโ€™s nothing, Jamie. Do I gotta tell them boys off?โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ Bucky rushed, flushing slightly. โ€œNo, I got it.โ€
โ€œUh-huh,โ€ you drawled, narrowing your eyes. Bucky was fidgeting something fierce, his usual aloof and charming aura had vanished โ€“ replaced with something akin to what he was like as a nervous teenager. โ€œJamieโ€ฆ are you alright?โ€
Bucky looked up, his eyes meeting yours, and he swallowed. โ€œClover, if you had-โ€ His brows furrowed, like he was considering, or regretting, his words. โ€œIf you had the chance to tell the oneโ€“the one, would you do it? Tell them, or- Or ask them out?โ€
โ€œOh,โ€ you said immediately. The question made the air in your lungs leave in a sweep โ€“ it was happening, Bucky had found someone. โ€œUm, I-I,โ€ you faltered, and you cleared your throat while placing your lunch down on the paper wrapping. โ€œI, uh- Yeah. Yeah I would. Why?โ€
Something flashed across Buckyโ€™s eyes and your stomach twisted. It was almost too much to bear.ย
โ€œWell,โ€ Bucky said slowly, his hand twitching on the table, like he wanted to move it but couldnโ€™t. โ€œClover, darlinโ€™โ€“uh, would you-โ€
Two loud barks cut him off and Koda, followed by Sarge, ran up to Bucky and pawed at his thighs. โ€œReally? Now?โ€ Bucky grit out. He fished through the basket and split a large dog biscuit. โ€œNow go on, get.โ€
โ€œYou were saying?โ€ you chuckled, watching the dogs run off with their trophy.ย
Bucky flushed a deeper pink, and he tucked a piece of hair behind his ear. His hand that had twitched just before reached across the table, open. Automatically, you took it, knowing he must need the comfort โ€“ hell, you needed it yourself, your heart was hammering so hard it felt like a rib was breaking. Whatever he was going to say was obviously hard, but you would take it and help him, he was your best friend.ย
โ€œWould you wanna be- God fuckinโ€™ damn, why is this so hard,โ€ he cursed, frowning.
โ€œTake your time, Bucky, baby, youโ€™re okay,โ€ you soothed, rubbing your thumb over his scarred knuckles. โ€œIโ€™m here, and I donโ€™t mind waiting. You say it when youโ€™re ready.โ€
You couldnโ€™t help but feel your heart fracture โ€“ surely he would only be acting this way if-
โ€œWould you wanna be my Clover? My girl?โ€
What?
โ€œWait- What? Did you- Did you justโ€“?โ€ you floundered. Shock cascaded through every fibre of your being, and you watched as Bucky stared at you, almost imploringly. โ€œHang on, hang on.โ€ย
โ€œOkay,โ€ Bucky whispered, his hand squeezing yours once.
You took a singular second to think about what he had just asked. After all this time, after all that pining, the teasing from Sam and Steve must have been about you. It must have been about how- But that meant Bucky was serious. Andโ€ฆ โ€œOh my god. Yes,โ€ you blurted, staring into his eyes. โ€œYesโ€“fuck, Jamie, I haveโ€“โ€
โ€œI knew.โ€
โ€œWhat?โ€ you squeaked, terrified you had been far too obvious.ย
โ€œI knew that I, uh- Liked you, sweetheart,โ€ he admitted, smiling sheepishly. โ€œI justโ€ฆ didnโ€™t know how to approach it โ€˜till the assholes cornered me on site, demanding to know why the fuck I looked like a loonโ€“smiling at nothing, when I was remembering you.โ€
A heavy breath left your lips, trembling only slightly. โ€œSo thatโ€™s why Stevie came into my shop this morning, smiling so big! After all this time,โ€ you wondered out loud. โ€œJust- Wow. Wow.โ€ย
โ€œWell, now,โ€ he began, chuckling quietly when his much larger hand engulfed yours. โ€œNow I have my own lilโ€™ four leaf clover.โ€

Bucky had always been an early riser, you knew this from the very beginning, only this time, there was a surprise in store. No amount of coffee could prepare you for it, either.ย

The morning air was crisp with the waning cold of winter, and you shivered while the sound of an axe hitting the solid mass of Buckyโ€™s splitting station accompanied the whistle of the old-fashioned kettle.
It was a slow morning, as was every Sunday in the Barnesโ€™ household. Bucky had woken up at the crack of dawn with the promise to be back later, โ€œI wonโ€™t be long, bunny, โ€˜kay?โ€ he mumbled before kissing your shoulder and shuffling out of bed, not to be seen again.ย
You replied with some mumbled ascent and promptly fell back asleep, that was until you heard the solid thump, thump, thump of split pieces of wood hitting the snow packed ground, and the low grunts of effort that left Buckyโ€™s lips on every swing of his axe.ย
That was how you ended up in the small kitchen of the cabin, protected from the cold by a warm, fluffy gown and matching slippers while you waited for the blessing that was caffeine.ย
Sarge was nowhere to be seen and Koda sat at your feet, her mouth open in a doggish-smile while she waited for the possibility of a treat. โ€œMaybe later, baby girl,โ€ you murmured around a yawn.ย
Koda let out a small huff and trotted away towards the front door. โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ll let you out,โ€ you called after her just as another thump of the axe sounded. โ€œHow can he do that this damn earlyโ€ฆโ€
The coffee finally made and in two steaming mugs, you trudged to the front door and looked out into the sprawling yard โ€“ snow covered the ground, soft after the fresh fall overnight and piled in places where neither Bucky nor you walked through often, and Sarge had made a home on one of the latter, his tail wagging at a fever pitch that made snow fly behind him.ย
You opened the door with your hip and Koda bolted past you, her brown fur flying with the inertia of a dog that had felt so wronged by staying inside.ย
โ€œKoda! Girlโ€“whatโ€™re you doinโ€™?โ€ Bucky called, looking up from his station. โ€œI told you to wait for- Oh, hey, sweetheart.โ€
โ€œMorning, James,โ€ you chuckled. The brunette wandered over and took your offered mug with a grateful smile. โ€œWhy and how you can do this so damn earlyโ€ฆโ€ A sip of your coffee made you sigh with contentment โ€“ the rich and earthy tone of the blend perfectly palatable. โ€œIt never fails to shock me. You had a perfectly cosy, comfortable, and warm bed to stay in.โ€
Bucky laughed. โ€œIs that so, Clover? Maybe you can convince me to stay next time, yeah?โ€
โ€œThere are plenty of ways to keep warm other than firewood,โ€ you said simply, staring into Buckyโ€™s face for a reaction.ย
You werenโ€™t disappointed.ย
โ€œFuckinโ€™ hell, baby,โ€ Bucky sighed, his neck turning pink with your insinuation. โ€œSay less next time.โ€ย
โ€œNo,โ€ you said, poking his chest with your index finger. Bucky raised a brow in challenge. โ€œIt seems you need to be explicitly told that there are other ways I would rather wake up than you swinging your axe next to our bedroom window and grunting. Got it?โ€
Bucky held his hands out in surrender, but there was a glint of something in his bright eyes that made you smirk. โ€œDeal.โ€ He leant in closer under the guise of kissing you on the forehead, but the next thing you heard was, โ€œIโ€™d rather be grunting from fuckinโ€™ you up the mattress while you whine and cry for moreโ€“pretty sure my bunny would wanna be woken up with her cock, wouldnโ€™t she?โ€
โ€œJames Barnes!โ€ you spluttered, your coffee almost sloshing out of your cup as you jerked back in surprise. โ€œWhat the fuck was that?โ€
โ€œA promise,โ€ he replied simply, a wink sent your way before he turned back to his station. โ€œKeep it in mind, sweetheartโ€“โ€™cos the next time you say shit like that to me, youโ€™re gonna regret it.โ€

Intuition was something that every woman grew to trust, and when it told you that something was wrong with your loveable, charitable idiot, you knew that it was right. You just had to take matters into your own hands and slow the mountain of a man down โ€” bring him back to earth in the best way you knew how.

โ€œIโ€™ll be back in a bit, baby,โ€ Bucky announced as he grabbed his woollen plaid jacket from the coat rack by his front door. โ€œDonโ€™t let them,โ€ he pointed at the two dogs cuddled next to you on the couch, โ€œthrow a party without me, yโ€™hear?โ€
โ€œโ€˜Kay, Buck, be safe,โ€ you replied, grinning at him over the book you were reading. โ€œCan you get me some chocolate, please?โ€
โ€œYep,โ€ he called as he walked out the door.ย
Both Koda and Sarge sighed and rested their heads back on your legs, leaving you in a comfortable silence โ€“ one you harnessed to read a new book that youโ€™d grown obsessed with.ย
It was only a moment later when the thud of the door closing brought you to your senses, and you looked up to see that the sun had just started to set, but that wasnโ€™t possible. Bucky had just leftโ€ฆ
โ€œโ€˜M back, Clover,โ€ Bucky called, his boots thudding as they hit the floor of the entryway of his cabin.ย
โ€œBucky?โ€
He appeared in your line of sight, brow raised. โ€œYou got sucked into that book, didnโ€™t you?โ€ There was a light chuckle in his words like he was amused over the fact that youโ€™d lost time. โ€œItโ€™s been a few hours, babyโ€“I got held up with Lee; he needed a hand. I texted you.โ€
You scrambled for your phone and found it was late afternoon, and Bucky had, in fact, texted you that he would be out a bit longer than he had hoped to be. โ€œHuh. Sorry.โ€
Bucky shook his head and took the bag in his hand to the kitchen. โ€œNo apologies. I brought you your chocolate too.โ€
โ€œThank you,โ€ you sang, grinning widely as you stood up from the couch and stretched. โ€œI suppose you want dinner?โ€
There was a quiet hum in reply, and you walked up behind Bucky, enveloping him in your arms while you rested your cheek on his back. It was silent for a moment, and you began to sway the two of you as Bucky chuckled quietly, when it was interrupted by a sharp exhale โ€“ a wince.
โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€ you asked immediately, pulling away to look him up and down. โ€œWhat happened, baby?โ€
Bucky turned to face you, his expression sheepish, when he winced again โ€“ his shoulder twitched, and it looked tense, even from where you stood. โ€œItโ€™s nothinโ€™, baby,โ€ he murmured, his hand on your shoulder as though to move you to the side, but you stood steadfast.ย
โ€œDoesnโ€™t look like nothing to me. Go sit down in the living roomโ€“in front of where I was sitting.โ€ His mouth opened as though he was going to argue, but you held a hand up to stop him. โ€œPlease, just go sit down.โ€
โ€œAlright,โ€ Bucky sighed, and he walked into the living room as you watched, and he sat on the ground in front of your seat with a quiet grunt.ย
You eyed his form for just a moment โ€“ his shoulders were drawn tight to his ears, and there was a grimace of pain and exhaustion on his handsome face. He looked drained; no longer full of life as he so often was.
โ€œOh, Bucky,โ€ you murmured and strode into the bedroom to retrieve the bottle of oil he used on you for your aches and pains โ€“ his hands working the knots and points of pain out of your muscles with such ease and no hesitation.ย
When you appeared in the living room, bottle in hand, Bucky looked up at you quizzically. โ€œWhatโ€™re you doinโ€™, sweetheart?โ€
โ€œNever you mind, nosy,โ€ you teased, and you sat behind him, knees on either side of his broad shoulders. โ€œTake this off,โ€ you said, pulling at his shirt. โ€œCanโ€™t work my magic with it in the way.โ€
โ€œThereโ€™s a word missinโ€™ in there, baby,โ€ Bucky purred, and you rolled your eyes.
โ€œPlease take your shirt off so I can ogle at your sexy body,โ€ you deadpanned. Bucky only laughed, and he worked his shirt up and off his back, his back muscles shifting as he did so. โ€œThank you.โ€
Bucky huffed and leaned back into your thighs. An idea struck you, and you placed the bottle down next to you, out of reach of the curious noses of the two dogs that watched, enraptured by their two favourite people. โ€œIโ€™m just gonnaโ€“โ€ Your fingers gently carded through his hair, the brown locks soft to the touch and parting easily around the gentle pull. A low moan fell from Buckyโ€™s lips, and you watched his shoulders relax. โ€œFeel good?โ€
โ€œMm,โ€ Bucky hummed, pushing his head back into your hands. โ€œDoesโ€“donโ€™ stop, please.โ€
You didnโ€™t. You were careful when your fingers snagged on a knot, but otherwise, you gently brushed through Buckyโ€™s hair, stopping only to scratch his scalp and at the nape of his neck โ€“ a low moan fell from his lips from the ministrations of your hands, and he fell further into a state of relaxation.ย
โ€œIโ€™m gonna rub your shoulders now, babe,โ€ you whispered against the back of his head, and you placed a kiss there when he made a quiet noise of ascent. โ€œYou just stay nice and relaxed for me.โ€
Carefully, you unclipped the lid of the oil and poured some onto your hand, keeping the noise of shock in your throat of how cold it was. You rubbed your hands together to warm the oil up โ€“ the last thing you wanted and needed was to startle Bucky with a cold touch and interrupt his vague state.ย
You started slowly, placing your hand on either side of his neck and rubbing outwards and down his shoulders, then back up again, keeping the pressure light but steady. Each pass of your hands pushed against the constellation of knotted muscle that lined the planes of his shoulders. You pushed harder and harder as you worked until Bucky finally moaned with relief when you hit the spot midway between his neck and the top of his arm.ย
โ€œFuck, that feels good,โ€ Bucky breathed, slumping further back between your legs. His head brushed against your stomach. โ€œPlease donโ€™t stop, baby.โ€
โ€œI wonโ€™t,โ€ you promised, smiling softly.ย
The ensuing silence was only interrupted by Buckyโ€™s sighs and moans of relief as you worked, and the quiet hoot of owls outside the cabinโ€™s window โ€“ the sun long having set since you started.
โ€œHowโ€™re you feeling, babe?โ€ you asked quietly, hesitant to disturb the peace.ย
Bucky shifted and leaned back, the top of his head pushing into your stomach so he could look up at you. You smiled down at him, your hands still rubbing circles on the top of his shoulders โ€“ the dazed look on his face made him look sleepy, entirely content to be between your feet and at the mercy of your hands.ย
โ€œFeels sโ€™good,โ€ he mumbled, sighing through his nose. โ€œDonโ€™ wanโ€™ you to stop.โ€
You chuckled and kissed his forehead, but he whined and pouted. โ€œSuch a big sap,โ€ you whispered, and you kissed him softly on the lips, a chaste touch that you revered. โ€œBut itโ€™s dinner time, babe. Lemme treat you. And to do that, you have to get up, so I can get upโ€“the food wonโ€™t cook itself.โ€
โ€œFine,โ€ Bucky sighed, and he slowly sat up. โ€œFuck, what did you do to me, sweetheartโ€“it doesnโ€™t hurt-โ€
โ€œYou need to tell me these things, Bucky,โ€ you admonished, getting to your feet. โ€œI can help you. I have a thing called intuition. Itโ€™s no use lying or trying to hide these things from me.โ€
โ€œDonโ€™t need to tell me twice.โ€ Bucky stood up with a groan. โ€œCโ€™mere,โ€ he said, and he held his arms out. You moved into them without question and sighed happily against his chest, his warmth seeping into your bones and very soul. โ€œThank you, sweetheart.โ€
A soft kiss met the crown of your head, and you smiled contentedly. โ€œAnytime, Bearโ€“now, cโ€™mon, letโ€™s have some dinner.โ€

Luck and fate often went hand in hand โ€” it was no different on that very first day that you met Bucky. The moment he walked into your haven was the moment that everything changed. You gained a best friend, and something much, much more.

Slow days were a favourite of yours, especially when Bucky was in town and free to laze about โ€“ just as the mountain of a man was doing currently, laying back on his favourite couch in the reading nook, while Koda and Sarge slept soundly at his feet.
The frown of concentration on his lips was adorable, and you couldnโ€™t help but sneak glances between cleaning and preparing orders. Pages rustled as he turned them, and you could hear little hums of surprise or grumbles of annoyance between. It was endearing.
Suddenly, a loud chime sounded from the entry of your store, and you glanced up to the doorway to see an elderly couple slowly making their way into the warmth of your haven. Bucky put down his book hastily and got to his feet, startling Koda and Sarge who huffed and growled their annoyance.ย
โ€œDown,โ€ Bucky scolded, and he looked up to the elderly couple. โ€œHello,โ€ he greeted, โ€œIโ€™ll take your coats.โ€
โ€œThank you, young man,โ€ the woman replied, her smile bright.ย
You couldnโ€™t help the way your heart swelled at the sight of Bucky gently taking the coupleโ€™s coats and hanging them up on the hook.ย
โ€œWelcome,โ€ you said, and the couple looked towards you. โ€œItโ€™s good to see you. What can I get for you today?โ€
Their order was a simple one, and you set to work as Bucky helped them to a booth. โ€œItโ€™s such a lovely place,โ€ the woman said, โ€œthe folk are real kind, and you, young man, are handsome.โ€
Bucky baulked and chuckled awkwardly.ย
โ€œI know,โ€ you called, and you looked up from the coffee machine to see Bucky staring at you, eyes slightly wide. โ€œThatโ€™s why I snapped him up.โ€
โ€œGood for you, sweetie,โ€ the man spoke up, winking. โ€œHeโ€™s a charmer. How did you two meet?โ€
For a second, you held your gaze on Buckyโ€™s face, watching his blush grow with a smug sense of pride. โ€œSee, he was a bit of an asshole to begin withโ€ฆโ€
It was opening day. The day that you had longed for ever since moving into the adorable small town that would now be your home, and your haven โ€“ a small store that you had big dreams for.ย
Coffee, books, and baking had been your life line, and for all you had worked for to scrounge and save for years, your hard work had paid off in the form of a bricked and ivory shopfront. The inside was perfect with warm tones, bookshelves and display cases had already been installed โ€“ ready to be filled to the brim with your treats and library of books.ย
โ€œYou ready?โ€ a voice said from beside you, and you grinned. It was Wanda โ€“ a friend you had grown close to in the small amount of time youโ€™d spent exploring the town, and since you had found her flower boutique, it had been nothing but soft words of encouragement and love that kept you going.
โ€œAbsolutely.โ€ Wandaโ€™s arm extended out to you, an offering of comfort, and you looped your own through it. โ€œLetโ€™s get those doors open.โ€
The inside was all stocked and ready to go โ€“ tables and chairs and booths all set up from the work you had put in yesterday, all that was needed? The smell of a fresh brew to entice the townsfolk to step in and venture into new territory.ย
โ€œItโ€™s beautiful, babe,โ€ Wanda gasped, her hand automatically going to feel the soft touch of cotton on the comfortable chairs. โ€œYou did amazing.โ€
โ€œThank you,โ€ you replied, grinning. โ€œWould you like the honours of the first cup โ€˜a joe?โ€
โ€œDamn right I would.โ€
Steam filled the air and you hummed as you worked the machine. Wanda had wandered through the shop and taken a seat in a booth facing the window, her eyes bright with wonder and curiosity. โ€œOh, babe, youโ€™re about to have your first customer!โ€ she gushed.ย
You looked up from the cup just in time to see the door swing open to reveal two men. Both of which towered in height and filled the doorway with their size โ€“ they looked like mountains. Very attractive mountains.
โ€œSteve!โ€ Wanda gasped. โ€œBucky, itโ€™s so good to see you back.โ€
The blond, of which you guessed was Steve, smiled at Wanda and wandered into your shop, his gaze roving over the decorations. โ€œHey, Wands,โ€ Steve greeted, his voice deep and raspy. โ€œItโ€™s good to be backโ€“found this new addition to the lot, and we couldnโ€™t help but stop in. Could use a cup.โ€
โ€œShe makes the best, I swear,โ€ Wanda praised.
You smiled as you tidied your station, cup in hand. โ€œOn it,โ€ you piped up, โ€œWands, itโ€™s ready.โ€
Rounding the counter, you came right next to Steve and the dark-haired man behind him โ€“ which you assumed was Bucky โ€“ and it was all you could do to keep your gasp inaudible and your knees from buckling, they were in fact huge, and they smelled of fresh pine and smoked cedar. Keep it together, you scolded yourself.ย
โ€œSo,โ€ you began, placing Wandaโ€™s cup in front of her and then turning to face the two men. โ€œWhat can I get you?โ€
Steve recited what seemed to be his usual order, and then Bucky piped up, โ€œJust black for me, doll. Thanks.โ€
Oh, boy, you thought.
The machine hissed and whirred as you prepared the two coffees, and you had a moment to take in the two of them. โ€œAre you bothโ€“?โ€
โ€œTheyโ€™re lumberjacks, and brilliant ones at that,โ€ Wanda cut in, eyeing you over the rim of her cup with a suspicious glint in her eyes. โ€œAnd they both have the most adorable babies.โ€
โ€œBabies?โ€ you questioned, raising a brow.
โ€œFur babies,โ€ Steve insisted, staring at Wanda. โ€œAnd theyโ€™re in the truck.โ€
โ€œOh my god,โ€ you rushed, โ€œyou have dogs?โ€
Bucky snorted behind Steve and shook his head. โ€œYeah,โ€ Bucky rumbled, โ€œand theyโ€™re a fuckinโ€™ handful.โ€
โ€œThis shop is dog friendly, please,โ€ you pleaded, and Wanda chuckled into her cup. โ€œIโ€™d love to meet them!โ€
Steve sighed. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll go get โ€˜em. It isnโ€™t our fault if they bowl you over.โ€ The door swung closed behind him, and then Bucky came up to the counter, his gaze piercing.
You stared back at him, expression carefully passive, when he suddenly smirked. โ€œIโ€™m Bucky. Itโ€™s good to finally have some good coffee in this townโ€“that is, if you know what youโ€™re doinโ€™.โ€
โ€œI will have you know that I am a pro, mister,โ€ you retorted, scowling at him. โ€œKeep that up and I will purposefully make your coffee awful just to spite you.โ€
Bucky laughed heartily, his nose scrunching and eyes squinting. โ€œGod, you are a hell of a woman. Wands, you picked a good one.โ€
โ€œI know,โ€ Wanda replied, nodding.ย
A clatter came from the door and you whipped your head around, only to find three giant balls of fluff powering into the walkway, tongues lolling, noses twitching, and tails wagging. โ€œOh my god! Look at them!โ€
Your shoes squeaked on the floor as you ran around the counter, one mission in mind: to hug those dogs to within an inch of your life.ย
Wanda was laughing while Bucky and Steve shook their heads as you fell to your knees, arms wide to embrace all three dogs. โ€œTheyโ€™re so cute!โ€ you gushed, scratching a black oneโ€™s ear and a white and black oneโ€™s chin. A white and brown one started to whine and licked your cheek.ย
โ€œThat is Cap,โ€ Steve spoke up, pointing at the white and black one, whose tongue was lolling while he panted and his ears twitched. โ€œHeโ€™s my boy, and heโ€™s one hell of a soldier.โ€
โ€œAnd those two idiots,โ€ Bucky said, pointing at the black one, and the brown and white one. โ€œAre mine. Koda is a Newfoundland, and Sarge is a Saint Bernard. They fuckinโ€™ love the snow.โ€
โ€œI love them!โ€ you cried, laughing and falling backwards onto the floor โ€“ all three dogs following you. โ€œI am never moving. They are my babies now, sorry boys.โ€
Steve snorted and Bucky sighed. โ€œAt least itโ€™ll be quieter without โ€˜em,โ€ he offered.
They stayed for an hour longer, just milling about and letting you fawn over their dogs with fond smiles on their lips. Customers came and went, all of them wishing you luck and good fortune with your grand opening, and promising to return to browse another day โ€“ which made you beam at them. Never had you felt so welcome.ย
โ€œWe best get goinโ€™,โ€ Bucky said eventually from his perch on the couch in the reading nook. โ€œStevie, weโ€™ve gotta get on site or the bastard will have our fuckinโ€™ heads.โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ Steve replied, rubbing his beard. He looked at you, a gentle smile pulling at his lips. โ€œIt was amazing meeting you, love, and we will for sure be cominโ€™ back. You make a fantastic coffee.โ€
The praise made pride swell in your chest, having impressed them. โ€œThanksโ€“Iโ€™ll hold you to that. And you better bring my babies with you next time.โ€
โ€œโ€˜Course,โ€ Steve assured, standing. โ€œCap, cโ€™mon, boyโ€“letโ€™s go.โ€ Cap yipped and stood, stopping to shake the mountainous fur before trotting after his human.ย
โ€œIt was good meetinโ€™ you, doll.โ€ Bucky came up to the counter, a smirk on his lips. โ€œNext time Iโ€™ll test your skills, huh? Might order somethinโ€™ different.โ€
You tilted your chin up in an act to seem unperturbed. โ€œDo it. I dare you.โ€
โ€œYou are somethinโ€™ elseโ€ฆโ€ There was a glint in his bright eyes, a spark of fondness and something else you couldnโ€™t place, but it made butterflies flutter in your stomach regardless. โ€œAnyway, Iโ€™ll catch you laterโ€“Iโ€™ll bring your babies with me.โ€
โ€œSee to it that you do, Bucky,โ€ you said, an amused smile creeping your lips up in the corners. In the short amount of time that you had known Bucky, and Steve, youโ€™d already grown attached โ€“ close in the way youโ€™d never been before, especially with the brunet. He exuded a sense of safety that you couldnโ€™t bear to resist. โ€œBe safe out there, okay?โ€
โ€œAlways. After all,โ€ Bucky said, turning away and patting his thigh. Koda and Sarge ran off after him. Just as he reached the door, Bucky turned back to face you, and you watched as he pulled out a small clover from the breast pocket of his jacket โ€“ it was a four leaf clover. โ€œI found this, this morninโ€™, and I think it was a sign.โ€
Unbidden, your eyes welled with tears.ย
Bucky smiled, and placed the clover back into his pocket. โ€œIโ€™ll see you later, Clover, alright? Keep warm โ€˜n keep safe.โ€
With that, Bucky walked out of your haven, and damn it all, he took your heart with him.

Acts of love never had to be something overstated or complicated โ€” it lay in smaller actions. An offer to make lunch or a warm cup of drink; to do a chore or errand that the other dreaded, only to see their eyes brighten for thoughtfulness.ย
Bucky was much the same man as those who preferred smaller, intentional acts, and you presented him with the perfect opportunity.ย

The phone call from Lee and consequent hours in town had taken up a considerable amount of time, and if Bucky was honest with himself, he truly wished he wasnโ€™t known for his reliability or accountability โ€” not on the days where he wanted to stay home with you, cuddled beneath a mountain of blankets so he could hold you close.ย
The only consolation for his absence was that it was still early โ€” an early rise to beat the morning sun and a call for help couldnโ€™t keep him from you, that he was damned sure of.ย
โ€œFuck,โ€ Bucky grumbled, pinching the bridge of his nose to ward of an impending headache. The cabin he shared with you came into view while the tires of his truck crunched over the thick, ladened snow that lined the driveway. He shut the radio off with a sigh, then turned the wheel with a firm hand.
His truck rumbled to a halt out the front of the cabin, under the shelter that housed both yours and his vehicle, and he killed the engine.ย
Relief relaxed the weary set of his shoulders for the silence that echoed around the clearing.ย
Bucky looked up from the dash to the darkened windows of the cabin, and his brow furrowed in confusion. โ€œWhat theโ€“โ€ The driverโ€™s door creaked from the cold as it swung open, then his boots hit the ground with a solid thump.ย
His eyes were fixed on the cabin where the windows were dark โ€” by all intents and purposes, he knew you were one to treasure your sleep, but to still be in bed at the current hour was unusual.ย
Not even a stir came from the home; the dogs eerily silent when they would normally be bounding over to greet him home, or at least, waging war against the solid wood of the front door.
โ€œClover?โ€ Bucky called โ€” silence returned his summons. The soles of his boots crunched over the snow, intent on only finding where you had gotten to. โ€œClover? Sarge, Kodaโ€“?โ€
The front door swung open, a blast of cool air following his entry and it shut behind him, but he was too busy searching for any sign of you to care much for it. โ€œBunny, where are you, sweetheart?โ€ he whispered harshly, just in case you were asleep.ย
Bucky walked inwards, taking in how your boots and shoes still lined the rack by the door; how your coat, your favourite, fluffy one that he got you seasons ago, hung on the rack, untouched. โ€œBaby?โ€
There was a small huff of a sigh from the living room around the entryway, and he made his way over quickly, only he froze at what he found.ย
The breath in his lungs hitched with the rapid swell of his heart, and a soft smile pulled at the corner of his lips as he took in the sight. On the couch, where he would normally find you delved so far deep into a book you could not be distracted, or determinedly focused on your phone (and damned Pinterest), you lay sideways on the plush couch cushions, fast asleep.ย
Your side rose and fell slowly and evenly with your breath.
At your feet, Sarge curled his body around the fluffy fabric of your socks and up the back of your legs; the long fur of his belly and sides brushing against your legs. His head peered up and over your thigh. A long, pink tongue lolled out in greeting.ย
โ€œHey, boy,โ€ Bucky greeted quietly, still standing by the doorway. โ€œYou keepinโ€™ my girl warm?โ€ The answering huff made him chuckle quietly.ย
There was a small whine from who Bucky knew was Sargeโ€™s partner in crime.ย
Koda was cuddled beneath you โ€” her long body propped your head up like a pillow, and your hand loosely rested against her shoulder.ย
Dark, softened eyes met his, and his heart thumped against his ribs; there was no immunity against the softness and love in Kodaโ€™s eyes, no matter how many times she gazed at either of you.ย
โ€œGirl,โ€ Bucky cooed, and he walked quietly over to offer his hand for a sniff. At your back, Bucky watched Kodaโ€™s tail twitch. โ€œAh, ah, donโ€™t wake her up now,โ€ he whispered, scratching under Kodaโ€™s chin. โ€œStay there, baby.โ€
It was thanks to you that the cabin was full of plush materials for all purposes, Bucky supposed, as he looked around the room for your favourite โ€” a forest green and sage plush, plaid blanket with an impossibly soft underside that was folded over the back of the couch, right within reach.ย
Carefully, Bucky leaned over and lifted it off of the back of the cushions, all while watching you for any sign of you stirring awake.ย
โ€œHere we go,โ€ he murmured, shaking the blanket out and positioning it so it was snug against your body โ€” the fabric settling like a cloud, and Bucky tucked you in, sure to leave Sargeโ€™s head free. โ€œAll snug, baby girl.โ€
โ€œMmโ€ฆโ€ย
Kodaโ€™s ears twitched at your mumbled noise, but Bucky hushed her with a scratch to the chin. โ€œWhy donโ€™t weโ€ฆโ€ย
It took all of his effort to bite back the grunt of effort, but he eventually settled on the floor, legs stretched outwards under the coffee table and his back against the sofa. If you were to wake, you would immediately see his profile. โ€œWhy donโ€™t we read, huh?โ€
Your book was haphazardly left on the coffee table next to a worn coffee mug of browns and greens, and it made Bucky smile as he reached it. Each page fluttered under his grip.
The spine of it fit in one of his hands easily, and he used the other to flip the first page, careful to keep your hastily placed bookmark in place.ย ย
โ€œWhatโ€™s she been up to, girl?โ€ Bucky asked, glancing up to the deep brown eyes that watched him with interest.ย
Kodaโ€™s muzzle moved to rest atop her paws, and her eyes drifted close in reply.
A small laugh rumbled through his chest, and he settled in, content to see what your new favourite book was about while you dozed the morning away.

Snow covered the roads between Buckyโ€™s cabin and the town centre, and the truck tires, chains attached, navigated the terrain with ease โ€” a blessing, given the age of the ancient automobile.ย
Next to you, in the passenger seat, Koda sat with her tongue lolling from her mouth and tail thumping on the leather of the seat. Her little barks and grunts of excitement made you smile as you drove, nearing the town.ย
The build up to the festive season, at least, in your family, was always a hectic, mind-numbing time. Preparations started early, as early as October, and the habit of having some semblance of festive organisation and creativity allowed the ability to make a plan with some affinity for joy.ย
At least, thatโ€™s what you told yourself. Bucky, on the other hand, was as laid back as a bear in hibernation. He could not care less.ย
โ€œAre you headed out today?โ€ Bucky asked tiredly โ€” the low timbre of his morning voice still sent shivers up your spine. It was one of the rare times where Bucky wasnโ€™t awake and up working before the crack of dawn.ย
You allowed yourself only a short amount of time to revel in it. Just because he chose to lie in, it didnโ€™t mean the world stopped. And time was ticking by.
The pop and crack of your bones when you stretched to the ceiling made you wince, and you slumped on the bed with a groan. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you meet us in theโ€“โ€ You paused, mulling over the places in town that you could stop at. โ€œWhat about the cafe? By Wandaโ€™s shopโ€”you remember it right?โ€
Bucky yawned, and nodded. โ€œAโ€™right, sounds good.โ€ He rolled onto his back and huffed. โ€œTake Koda with you? Poor princess misses her mommaโ€”Iโ€™m workinโ€™ her too hard, apparently.โ€
โ€œYou are,โ€ you teased, smirking. โ€œIโ€™ll take my baby, we can have a girlโ€™s day.โ€
โ€œIf you come back with her claws painted,โ€ Bucky said, sitting up. โ€œI swear toโ€“โ€ You kissed him full on the lips, silencing his tirade, and he pulled back, brow raised. โ€œJusโ€™ have fun. I know what you get like with this damn Christmas shoppinโ€™, baby.โ€
โ€œI always have fun.โ€ย
An hour later, after a hearty, warm breakfast, Koda and you jumped into your truck and there you were, on the road to town, the back tray of the truck prepared for your incoming haul.
Koda huffed next to you, and you glanced over โ€” she was looking out the window at a herd of bounding deer. โ€œNo, baby,โ€ you chided, and you put a hand on her back, scratching the fur. โ€œYou canโ€™t have them, leave โ€˜em be.โ€
A low whine left her muzzle at the scolding, and you chuckled.ย
โ€œHow about we get you a treat in town, hey?โ€ She turned in the seat to face you, her floppy, brown ears perking up at the word treat. โ€œI knew that would get you, honey,โ€ you cooed, scratching her chin, and you grimaced at the slobber that now covered your wrist.ย
The town sign came into view as you rounded the final turn of the road. Sprawling pines and fir trees lined the way, a distinctly thick blanket of snow covering their branches from the previous nightโ€™s fall. It was a beautiful sight as the sunlight bounced off the crisp white.
Townsfolk that dawdled on the sidewalks were rugged up to the nines in the chilly breeze. A snow plough had thankfully been through that morning, leaving behind heaped piles on the sides of the roads, and you briefly thought of the mess that Koda would make jumping into one.ย
โ€œKoda, baby,โ€ you said, and Kodaโ€™s mouth closed as she tilted her head in question โ€” her bright eyes widened from your stern tone. โ€œI need you to behave. You stay next to me, okay?โ€
She barked once and licked her nose. โ€œI know you canโ€™t understand me,โ€ you mused, and you turned your truck into a free parking space. The grind of the handbrake was loud in the cabin. โ€œAlright, how about we get a couple of things for preserving first, honey?โ€
A yip was your answer, and you nodded. โ€œGood girl. Now, cโ€™mon.โ€ The air outside was as crisp as it was back at the cabin, but you made your way to the passenger side and opened the door for Koda. โ€œHeel,โ€ you ordered immediately, and Koda stood stock still. โ€œThatโ€™s it. Letโ€™s get your lead.โ€ย
With the leash attached to her collar and your bag over your shoulder, you began the journey of Christmas shopping. Koda greeted every person that passed you by, as did you. Life in a small town was the familiarity with everyone, and you felt blessed for that, given the amount of baked goods you received as gifts โ€” and the friendships, of course.ย
For hours, you went from shop to shop, buying things on your considerably long list, and you were starting to tire from lugging groceries back and forth. The temptation to text Bucky and tell him to hurry up was overwhelming.ย
The cuts of meat in the crate you carried jostled as you walked back towards your truck, when Koda perked up next to you. And having a weighty load of fresh meat in your arms, you were keen to avoid an overexcited dog pulling you down onto the pavement in a glorious face plant. โ€œGirl, heel,โ€ you commanded quickly, looking up and around, โ€œWhat is it?โ€ย
You searched the street, until you saw a truck approaching โ€” it was identical to the one that parked next to yours back at the cabin, and with an equally familiar brown and white St. Bernard in the passenger seat. Bucky had finally arrived. โ€œOh, thankโ€“โ€
Koda barked and launched forward, her paws skidding over the snowy pavement, and you winced at the pull of the lead on your wrist. The crate of meat in your arms tottered and swayed dangerously as the truck pulled up right in front of you, the engine cutting out straight away. Buckyโ€™s head popped out from the driverโ€™s side window as Koda whined, desperate to get to him.ย
โ€œI was just about to text you,โ€ you huffed, desperately attempting to get a stable hold on the meat so it would not tumble to the concrete.ย ย
Bucky, who had worn his hair down and covered it with a beanie, while a thick, plaid jacket covered his shoulders, slipped out the driverโ€™s side and Sarge followed suit. โ€œGood thing I have a sixth sense for when my Clover needs help, huh?โ€
โ€œYeah, yeah,โ€ you mumbled, and Bucky took the crate from your arms. โ€œThank you. Koda, sit.โ€
The overexcited ball of fluff did as she was told, and you scratched behind her ears as she looked up at you, then to Bucky, then back to you. Sarge was placidly sitting at Buckyโ€™s heel, his calm disposition making you envious for a fleeting second. โ€œSheโ€™s been so excitedโ€”seeing all of her friends,โ€ you explained.
โ€œI bet,โ€ Bucky chuckled. He looked at you and grinned. โ€œSo, where were my girls off to next? Whatโ€™s on that list aโ€™yours?โ€
You sighed, and fetched the sheet of paper that had guided your whole expedition from your bag. โ€œDecorationsโ€”I need some for our tree that you got,โ€ you listed, and your eyes scanned further down the page. โ€œThen it isโ€ฆ Well, thatโ€™s really it, except for the last of the food.โ€
โ€œWhy donโ€™t we do the food first,โ€ Bucky offered, stepping backwards towards the bed of his truck. โ€œThen they,โ€ he nodded at the two dogs who now sat at your feet, โ€œWill hopefully, hopefully, be tired outโ€”give us less of a damn workout.โ€
โ€œGood idea.โ€ย
Once the cuts of meat were safely away in the bed of Buckyโ€™s truck, the four of you made your way back down the street towards another grocer, your list and the leash of Koda in one hand, Buckyโ€™s in the other.ย
The venture through the grocerโ€™s went smoothly, even with the two dogs in tow, and when you made your way back to your truck, Bucky paused. The sudden tug on your arm made you stop, and you looked back to see what was wrong. โ€œWhat isโ€“ Oh.โ€
Bucky was staring into the window display of the local seamstress. There were two mannequins, dressed up as Santa Claus, and Mrs. Claus. โ€œTheyโ€™re pretty,โ€ he said, stepping closer to the glass.ย
You followed suit and admired the finishes on the skirt of Mrs. Clausโ€™ dress โ€” beautiful, iridescent whites and ivories were interwoven with deep cherry red. It looked comfortable too; warm from the soft material.ย
The Santa costume looked just as well made with woollen accents, and heavy, durable fabric. โ€œYou would be so cuddly in that, babe,โ€ you murmured, absentmindedly squeezing Buckyโ€™s hand. โ€œAnd you could be Santa, even over at the site.โ€
โ€œWe need them,โ€ Bucky said quietly, and before you could say a word of protest, he let go of your hand and walked right up to the entry. There was the sound of Christmas carols when he pulled the door open, and he walked inside, Sarge following obediently after him.ย ย
โ€œBucky!โ€ you laughed, and you rushed in after him, careful to keep a tight hold on Kodaโ€™s leash. โ€œCome back, letโ€™s get all of this in the car first.โ€
The interior of the shop was cosy and warm. Materials and threads of all kinds and colours lined the space in shelves or drawers; the colours of green, red, and gold most popular, if the giant display in the middle of the floor was any indication.ย
You found Bucky at the counter, chatting happily with the worker while they prepared something on the countertop. He smiled at you as you approached, and said to the worker, โ€œWeโ€™ll grab the set of outfits on the mannequins.โ€ย
The worker grinned and ran to grab the matching outfit from the mannequins. With them occupied, you looked at Bucky, unable to hide the amusement at his impulsivity. โ€œThis wasnโ€™t on my list,โ€ you whispered, smirking.
Bucky shrugged. โ€œDonโ€™t care, bunny. Youโ€™re gonna look so fuckinโ€™ beautiful in that, and I need my Mrs. Claus, donโ€™t I?โ€
You sighed. โ€œYouโ€™re not wrong.โ€
โ€œThank you,โ€ Bucky drawled, and he kissed your cheek just as the worker came back with the matching costumes.ย
A few moments later, all four of you exited the store, cardboard bag in hand with the costumes. Thankfully, both of your trucks were parked not too far from one another.ย
With a few grunts of effort, the two truck beds were stacked full from your haul, and everything was ticked off your list, exceptโ€ฆ
โ€œYou do realise, babe,โ€ you said suddenly, now that the reality of those costumes had settled in. โ€œThat Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus are marriedโ€ฆ Right?โ€
Bucky only smirked.ย
Your mouth fell slack at his lack of an answer, and you swore your coat was suddenly too hot. โ€œBucky!โ€
He shrugged. โ€œWhat? Canโ€™t a man dream?โ€ You watched him walk backwards to his truck, Sarge at his heels, and he blew you a kiss before he slipped into the driverโ€™s seat. โ€œSee you at home, baby!โ€ he called over the rumble of the engine, and he was gone.ย
At your feet, Koda yipped and looked up at you. โ€œDid youโ€“ Did you hear him, baby?โ€ She whined in response. โ€œIโ€“ Oh my god, okay,โ€ you breathed. Your heart raced in your chest and your mind moved just as fast. โ€œWhat just happened? No, noโ€”letโ€™s get home, honey. Your dad has a lot to answer for.โ€
If Koda could have voiced an answer, you would have suspected she would turn around and mention the lack of treats โ€” but little did you know, the biggest treat was yet to come one day soon.

You were expecting it to be an ordinary day; prepare for the festivities with Koda and Sarge by your side, begging for treats and whatever else they set their eyes on. But what you did not expect, was to do so, with two reindeers in tow.

โ€œWhat on earth is this?โ€
Your question hung in the air like the flurries of snow outside โ€” dancing in your vision much like the flickering flames of the fireplace on Buckyโ€™sโ€ฆ assemblage.ย
The tails of the two dogs in front of you thumped on the hardwood floors, their tongues lolling out of their mouths; a priceless pull of the slobbery jowls that resembled a smile. Their furry bodies were covered by brown sweaters with golden bells sewn onto the sides. Antlers, half the size of your forearm, were perched on their heads by a headband-esque contraption.ย
Meanwhile, your lumberjack that stood between them, was dressed in his favourite sweats, uggs, and a woollen, red and white, Santa sweater. The smile on his lips was wide, beaming brighter than the fire that crackled by his side. โ€œSurprise!โ€
You blinked and blinked again, willing what you were seeing to either be a strange fever dream, or a hallucination. โ€œWhat have you done?โ€ Koda and Sarge huffed, launching themselves forward and towards you. โ€œWait!โ€
Bucky laughed and walked forwards, holding out his arms in an invitation for a hug. โ€œWe dressed up for you.โ€ His arms pulled you in, making you stumble into his chest where he was warmest, and cosiest, you werenโ€™t going to lie. โ€œAnd I had to get them their own sweaters, what kind of dad do you think I am?โ€
โ€œOne that cannot say no to save his life,โ€ you said, looking into his eyes. โ€œOr, as a matter of fact, resist the puppy eyes your children give you for some of your damned baconโ€”and that you give it to them when you think I am not looking.โ€
โ€œHow dare you accuse me of such a dastardly act!โ€ Bucky exclaimed, stepping back from your embrace with a hand over his heart in mock offence. โ€œOur babies deserved the bacon.โ€
โ€œSure, sure.โ€ The dogs followed you as you stepped back, and you kneeled on the floor to be level with their bright, happy eyes. โ€œArenโ€™t you two adorable, huh? What did your dad do to you?โ€
Bucky defiantly walked away from you and towards the couch, where he sat down with a grunt. โ€œI did nothinโ€™ that they didnโ€™t want, Clover,โ€ he said, rolling his eyes. โ€œBesides, they were well compensated for their troublesโ€”oh, the travesty of beinโ€™ a dog.โ€
You stood up from the floor and made your way over to Bucky, smiling all the way. โ€œI know, itโ€™s horrible getting treats and loving from someone who loves you more than anything, isnโ€™t it?โ€
โ€œI dunno, baby,โ€ he said quietly. โ€œI think beinโ€™ loved by you is the best thing.โ€
โ€œSuch a sap,โ€ you replied, scrunching your nose. Buckyโ€™s hands grabbed yours, and he pulled you down onto his lap, your thighs straddling his. The woollen sweater was a deep red in the shadows; you couldnโ€™t help but run your hands over the soft material covering his chest and shoulders. โ€œLoving you is the best thing.โ€
โ€œActually,โ€ he hummed, and he brought your knuckles to his lips, kissing every one until he looked at you with widened eyes; brimming with unfathomable love. โ€œI think, of it all, gettinโ€™ to love youโ€ฆ Thatโ€™s even better, Clover.โ€
โ€œYou are such a sap,โ€ you sniffed, and you took your hands out of his grip to cup his jaw. โ€œBut I love you. And this sweater.โ€
Any reply he may have had was silenced by your lips as you kissed him tenderly, pouring all of yourself into it; conveying what you couldnโ€™t say in words so he would know and feel your soul.

Christmas in the snow was something you adored about the festive season, and spending it with the ones you loved, both human and animal, would make it all the better. But Bucky had a surprise up his sleeve for you; the cards of his mischievous ways held close to his chest until the moment was right.

You had been given a very specific set of two rules to follow that day.ย
Number one: you were not to step foot outside of the cabin under any circumstances. โ€œIf you need me,โ€ Bucky said, his eyes trained on you. โ€œJust come to the front door and yell for meโ€”Iโ€™ll hear you and Iโ€™ll come, okay?โ€
You agreed, although reluctantly.ย
Number two: in no way were you to attempt to uncover what he was up to โ€” whether that be by interrogation, snooping, or skullduggery.ย
Of course, you agreed; your fingers crossed behind your back.ย
The first attempt, naturally, was a failure.ย
You were standing at the front door. Bucky was obscured by the side of the cabin when you yelled out for him to come and get his coffee. โ€œAnd if you want a snackโ€“โ€
โ€œNah,โ€ Bucky called back, and he wandered over, and conveniently, when he stood before you on the doorstep, the bulk of his frame blocked your view into the yard. โ€œIโ€™m good, thanks, baby.โ€ย
Your attempt at looking over his shoulders did not go unnoticed, and to your utter indignation, he started to chuckle. โ€œAbsolutely fuckinโ€™ not, Clover. Patience.โ€
โ€œUgh.โ€
Your next attempt was when lunch time came around.ย
The dogs barked and yipped their happiness for getting their snow-covered paws on a snack when you walked past the window โ€” their tails brushed against the snow on the windowsill, and it made a puff of white to cover their rear ends. โ€œOh, you idiots,โ€ you laughed as you neared the closed front door.
The hinges traitorously creaked as you pushed it open to lean out a little โ€” just a little, when Buckyโ€™s voice boomed from the other side of the cabin, making you jump in fright. โ€œHey! Get your cute butt back inside!โ€
โ€œUgh,โ€ you groaned. Almost had it.
The sound of Buckyโ€™s boots crunching over the snow outside later that afternoon made you rejoice โ€” he must have finished, and you looked up from the book you were reading towards the window. Only, Bucky was walking towards it with his ladder under his arm, and the coat he wore bulging around his middle; a poor attempt at concealing something. โ€œWhat theโ€ฆโ€
Sarge and Koda bounded around his feet while he walked, and you could just feel the frustration in Buckyโ€™s posture, and the sound of his grumblings. โ€œNoโ€“ Get out of the damned way, girl. Sarge, heel!โ€
The ladder landed on the snow-strewn ground with a metallic clang, and Buckyโ€™s eyes met yours. He froze.ย
โ€œHey,โ€ you said, blinking at him.ย
Bucky blinked back, and then he narrowed his eyes. โ€œGo back to your bookโ€”no peekinโ€™.โ€
You sighed, rolled your eyes, and looked back down at your book. From the corner of your eye, if you only peeked, you could watch Buckyโ€™s boots climb up the ladder, the outer sole of the thick, winter-built shoes covered in a layer of sticky snow.ย
Koda and Sargeโ€™s faces peered in through the window, and when they saw you, their tongues lolled out of their mouths in unison; the cutest smiles you had ever seen. โ€œHey, cuties,โ€ you mouthed, and you blew them a kiss each before you hastily looked down at your book before Bucky could see that your focus was elsewhere.ย
Time seemed to crawl by, minute by minute stretching further and further, almost impossibly so, when a sudden tap on the window made you jump in fright. โ€œAh!โ€
Bucky started to laugh, and he shook his head. โ€œIโ€™m done, you can come out now.โ€
It was your turn to narrow your eyes this time. โ€œAnd what makes you think I will? After sitting here, waiting foreverโ€“โ€
โ€œJust get your butt out here,โ€ he said, gesturing you over. โ€œCโ€™mon, I wanna show you this.โ€
You huffed and stood from your cosy blanket hub on the couch. โ€œFine.โ€ The wooden floors creaked as you padded towards the front door. โ€œโ€˜Wanna show you thisโ€™ he says, wellโ€“โ€
โ€œI can hear you, yโ€™know.โ€ Bucky opened the front door, a brow raised in question. Instead of grilling you further, he reached out a gloved hand. โ€œNow, cโ€™mon, I know Iโ€™ve made you wait long enoughโ€”I wouldnโ€™t have done it if I didnโ€™t have to. I wanted to surprise you.โ€
Without hesitation you held Buckyโ€™s offered hand, but you pouted at him. โ€œIโ€™ve been on my own all day.โ€
โ€œDonโ€™t go makinโ€™ me feel worse, sweetheart,โ€ Bucky said. The soft brush of his lips on your cheek made you giggle, and he pulled away to walk you out the door. โ€œBut Iโ€™ll make it up to you; promise I will.โ€
You followed Bucky out of the front door and out into the snow โ€” where Sarge and Koda frolicked about happily, their tails wagging a mile an hour as they played. โ€œThey werenโ€™t no damn help,โ€ Bucky grumbled, rolling his eyes. The exasperated sigh that fell from his lips made a cloud of mist bloom against the darkening sky. โ€œBut they did help me pick the colours for you.โ€
โ€œWhat do you meanโ€“?โ€
Bucky grinned, his eyes scrunching at the edges with the brightness of his smile. โ€œWell, bunny, I know how much you been lookinโ€™ on that site, on your phoneโ€”Pinterest, I think it was.โ€ย
โ€œOh, boy,โ€ you said, and it dawned on you. Not even a week ago, you had excitedly run to Bucky while he was lounging in the living room, giddy with the rush of finding the cutest Christmas light set up for a cabin โ€” almost identical to the one you lived in with him. โ€œOkayโ€ฆ?โ€
โ€œAnd it got me thinkinโ€™โ€“โ€
Without missing a beat, you interrupted him with, โ€œThatโ€™s dangerous.โ€
โ€œShut up.โ€ The two of you burst into laughter, leaning on one another for support. โ€œOkay, okayโ€”as I was sayinโ€™, it got me thinkinโ€™โ€“โ€
Unable to help yourself, all while forcing the laughter back down into your chest, you raised your hand up to Buckyโ€™s forehead. His brows furrowed in confusion when the back of your hand made contact with his skin, and you said, โ€œOh, you poor thing!โ€
โ€œFor fucks sake,โ€ Bucky howled, and he bent over double wheezing with his laugh. The clouds of mist swirled while he coughed. โ€œClover! Pleaseโ€“โ€
โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Iโ€™m sorry,โ€ you rushed. The hiccupped laughter wracked your chest, and you took a second to breathe. โ€œOkay. Okay, as you were saying?โ€
It took a moment for Bucky to catch his own breath, but finally, he stood up straight, then cleared his throat. โ€œFuckinโ€™ hell, youโ€™re too sassy for your own damned good.โ€
โ€œYou love it.โ€
โ€œYes,โ€ he quickly agreed. โ€œBut I was lookinโ€™ up those ideas you found; low and behold, it turned out I could pull at least one of โ€˜em off. Soโ€ฆโ€ A remote, no bigger than your hand, was pulled from his coat pocket. It appeared innocuous, but you still tilted your head at it, confused and intrigued. โ€œCโ€™mere, and look at the cabin.โ€ย
Bucky pulled you into his side, and you faced the cabin โ€” overwhelmed with apprehension. โ€œWhatโ€“?โ€ย
A click sounded, and the world came alight.ย
The cabin, while beautiful before, was otherworldly now โ€” lights of a bright, crystal white and a deep, velvety green shone and glowed along the window ledges. There were rainbows of colours in the trees: pinks, yellows, greens, and blues, bright against the white of the snow.ย
The breath in your chest hitched and stuttered, taking the ability to form words with it.ย
โ€œOh,โ€ you finally managed, breathily and trembling. Buckyโ€™s hand rubbed up and down your shoulder, the warmth of his touch bringing you back down to earth and to the haven before you. โ€œOh, itโ€™s beautiful.โ€
โ€œOnly the best for my girl,โ€ Bucky said quietly. โ€œHappy Christmas, Clover.โ€
