Domenico Grenci con i suoi lavori in un certo senso estremizza la disparità tra distanza e vicinanza. L’artista dipinge soggetti che potrebbero apparire tra loro molto diversi – fiori, volti, superfici tessili – ma che risultano, tanto nel loro trattamento quanto nel senso che portano con sé, profondamente affratellati. I suoi volti di donna hanno occhi che calamitano e trafiggono. Potrebbero sembrare amanti o compagne di un tempo, comunque persone profondamente conosciute, e si rivelano invece semplici immagini ridipinte dopo essere state selezionate e isolate da banali rotocalchi patinati. Fisicamente vicine ma a una distanza siderale. I fiori mettono in gioco una natura a portata di mano, addomesticata, che come una metonimia si fa parte domestica di un tutto lontano e irraggiungibile, quello della natura. Mondo incontaminato che qui può stare sul comò. Anche i tessuti, spesso coperte e lenzuola, sono superfici che abitano la nostra intimità letteralmente a fior di pelle e che nei dipinti di Grenci vengono allontanati, resi visibili e non più solamente toccabili in un’immagine poetica.

Ma è la pittura di Domenico Grenci ad apparire allo stesso tempo distante e presente, ponendo in campo una profonda confidenza a suo modo sognante, come vista tra i barlumi del ricordo o offuscata da un vetro appannato, sottoposta a continue operazioni di avvicinamento e allontanamento lirico, visivo, empatico.  Light Years è un pezzo dei Pearl Jam che sintetizza perfettamente in alcuni suoi versi questa sensazione spesso provata anche nei legami personali, di potersi quasi toccare, eppure sentirsi distanti anni luce.
