<Woman. Life. Freedom>
There is not a day that passes by in which I don't think about the Woman Life Freedom protests and the precious lives that were brutally taken. Mahsa Amini should have been alive today, if she were alive, she'd be attending her master's program which she got admission for in Winter semester 2022. Armita was pushed and gone comatose before it was stated that she had passed before it even broke the news.
I sometimes think to myself, what if I was the one killed? what state would my family be living in at the moment? I can't even imagine how angry and revengeful they would be just like their families.
whenever I find myself wearing a bit of compulsory, disgusting hijab because unconsciously I feel like I'm in danger, I shove that disgusting piece of clothing away because I do not want to be indifferent to the lives of thousand who were taken. because I AM them. I AM living the same pathetic life. I SHOULD BE fighting for my rights. THIS IS what all of us deserve. THIS IS the legacy we need to keep. THIS IS what we owe them. TO simply not be afraid. I don't care if I get arrested, beaten or physically and sexually harassed because thousands were through this and I am no different than them.
I am writing this with all my anger and the knot that is currently in my throat; whenever I am walking down the Enghelab St. I pass by the block where Vida Movahed wavec that piece of clothing in peace and by passers kept pulling her down. I remember back then I did not see myself not wearing mandatory hijab in the streets of Tehran, I was so impressed by her, I kept checking the news to see what happened afterwards. I admired her. they should never be forgotten.
We are the generations that kept their names alive, even though she might have been forced to stay silent for years onward, we have been trying to keep her name in our thoughts and conversations. She was the beginning of everything.
Last year when we heard about Mahsa Amini, My sister and I were watching a movie in my room, we paused the movie to get a tea break, I turned on the WiFi and checked out the news and saw that people protested in front of the hospital where she was held. My heart was beating so fast, I couldn't focus on the movie afterwards, I told my sister, she quickly turned her WiFi on to go check out her twitter acc. we kept reading the news and different points of view on this upsetting news to each other to make sure we weren't missing on anything important.
we simply stopped watching the movie afterwards. I still remember the stories I posted on my instagram stories that day, full of swear words and anger pointed towards the government and the oppressive system that has been pushing us to our limits. I WAS AND AM STILL FURIOUS. lots of other people didn't have a clue as to what was going on. I kept checking my friends' stories to see if they were informed. they probably thought ' oh this is just going to disappear in a few days. this is like "everyday" bullshit for us. '
the killing of a 23-year-old woman dressing 'improperly' in YOUR eyes and basically in what YOU call as YOUR religion should not be waived off. Just because you are not personally affected by it NOW, it doesn't mean it won't affect you at all.
No one has forgotten what happened to Iran last year and no one will ever forget; we won't let them.
every day is a fight for freedom now. every day that you stand up to your parents and wear what you find acceptable, is a day worth fighting for, because we will never forget what happened to those of us who fought with their bare hands in front of one of the most brutal dictatorships of history.
We will neither forgive nor forget.

The violent oppression of women in Iran has not ended just because it dropped off Western news cycles.
Say her name: Armita Garawand!
