Korean Made Simple, Ch 10 Notes

Oh goody, more adjectives. I need to reread everything because it’s been so long since I’ve cracked my book open because life. 

BY THE END OF THIS I SHOULD BE ABLE TO SAY GOOD GOOD BOY IN KOREAN. 

Conjugating Descriptive Verbs

So basically we will be conjugating descriptive verbs into adjectives that can be used before nouns. (Just like English, yay.)

Apparently there are some verbs that are exceptions, but the basic conjugation is the descriptive verb stem + ㄴ/은. Use the ㄴ when conjugating a stem that ends in a vowel, and 은 when it ends with a consonant. 

예쁘다 is pretty

예쁜 남자 is pretty boy

촣다 is good

촣은 책 is good book

Pretty simple stuff.

Conjugating Verbs Ending in ㅂ

If you have a verb stem ending in ㅂ, and you’re conjugating for the present tense only, you always drop ㅂ and add 운 to the verb stem. 

For example: 새롭 (new) becomes 새로온 책 (new book)

If the verb stem ends in anything more than a ㅂ (like ㄼ), conjugate as like it’s a normal verb, since the pronunciation is ㄹ instead of ㅂ. 

Conjugating Verbs Ending in ㄹ

Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Replace ㄹ with ㄴ and you are done. Magic. 

Conjugating 있다

This only applies when you are using a descriptive verb as an adjective. If this verb is that the end of the sentence, you would just conjugate the verb normally. 

있다 becomes 있는 when you’re describing things. Another really easy one. 

AGAIN: BILLY STRESSES TO NOT REPEAT YOURSELF ANY MORE THAN NECESSARY. As long as it’s clear who you are talking about, feel free to drop the noun or pronoun. 

Man, no wonder Korean dramas are full of misinterpretations. 

Verb Stem + 고

You use this to connect sentences with multiple verbs! For example:

저는 먹고 갑니다.

I eat and leave. 

It can also be used to connect descriptive verbs together, like 

재미있고 좋은 책

fun and good book

This chapter has TWO conversations. Wheeeeeee. 

I HAVE ONE PROBLEM BILLY AND THAT PRETTY IS NOT JUST USED FOR GIRLS IN ENGLISH. I WILL CALL GIRLS HANDSOME AND BOYS PRETTY IF I WANT TO. 

(I swear to god I wrote the pretty boy example above before I got to this.)

Before you jump on me, he said, “Just like English, 예쁘다 (”to be pretty”) is used exclusively for females, and 잘생기다 (”to be handsome”) is used exclusively for males. 

제가 is a combination of “I” and the subject marker. Sweet. More shortcuts. 

Anyway, I’m still annoyed about the pretty/handsome comment, and it’s the end of the chapter, so I’m gonna call it a night.

May week 4

Another eventful week with new releases!

22nd -> Bit of a void after finishing Save Me. Listening to the albums released on 21st slowly. Gotta savor the goodness slowly. Still on Dayglow though. Watched another new live version of Taemin's 'Advice'. Scouting for some new, funny, light kdramas to counter the depth of Save Me.

23rd -> The studio choom version of 'Advice' was released! Watched reaction video to SB19 'What?'. Never heard a fillipino boy band before. Was not aware that they were capable of this kind of production. Pleasantly surprised. The song was quite catchy. But I think because of the nuances of the language and my unfamiliarity with tagalog, it was not really my style. Though my hopes are now high and so is the bar. Eagerly waiting for the one song to get me hooked to fillipino boy bands! But for now ...KPOP! Finally watched EXO's 'obsession'...had heard the song before... it was totally elevated by the video.

24th-> Nct had released behind the scenes for when they were recording 'Resonate' ...watched a compilation video. Super fun to see the vocal exercises they do. Same stuff that I was taught in drama class along with the diction and phonetic exercises. Another interesting, eye opening watch was the behind the scene of Taemin's 'Advice' and 'Sad kids' studio recording. Gaho released another wonderful single - 'Rush Hour'. This dude knows how to use his voice. 이 노래 너무 멋있다 !

25th -> Of course, rush hour is on repeat. Started a fun kdrama on netflix - 'Mystic Pop Up Bar'. Seems cute and actually the storyline has me hooked. Can't believe Sungjae is from BtoB... Heard some of his vocals ..wow!

26th -> Ha Hyunsang released another cover. This is of a japanese song, 'Pretender', by a group called Hige dandism. Really nice cover! Listening to : Honest Mistake by Max Embers. Hear it in an fmv of the bl 'Second chance'.

Kingdom has been getting wild. I loved the fact mayfly came up with their own lyrics....and what lyrics! And their version of wolf...immaculate! Can't believe I got a stray kids & ateez dance collab. Pays to be a multi!

27th -> Watching Taemin's dance practice...the one's where he teaches 2 other members. Brilliant how he has subtext for his moves.

28th -> TXT released a trailer for their new song. I can feel it. It's gonna be good. Oof! Is it genius that they have take concepts from the movie 'IT' and incorporated it to give vibes? Yes, yes it is.

A new group is debuting under C9 entertainment, and the only reason it caught my attention is cause their album is called 'Bipolar : Prelude to anxiety'. I mean come on. This is amazing if they are going to tackle it well. Music dealing with mental illness can be so liberating. I hope they can pull it off without glorifying or romanticizing it too much. Honestly, if they can do this well I have another group to stan.

Another fascinating Kingdom episode. Love poem was done so well, it really was the epitome of relaxed, perfect vocals. One of the best renditions. Oh, stray kids , thank you. Never knew I need deadpool incorporated in Kpop, but here we are. The execution was spot on..these guys are not messing around when it comes to having fun while delivering quality. There was so much attention to detail, even the background screen had comic book references with the skz boys.

29th -> Just watched some ateez and txt performance videos.

30th -> N.Flying is making a comeback soon, so kept their playlist going to get in the groove. Watched all the Ateez mvs that I hadn't yet. I am properly up to speed and ready to watch the next kingdom episode. I had seen all the dance practice videos, but I didn't expect them to have released so many mvs. Absolutely no complaints, I am thoroughly one over, it is safe to say Ateez is officially one of my favourite groups.

31st -> TXT released their new album, along with an mv for their song '0x1:Lovesong (I know I love you)'. They surpassed my expectations by miles. I never would have guessed it was gonna be like this. 진자, 아, 이 노래 너무 촣다! 이 느끔 ... 조금 따뜻햇어, 멋있어... I can't properly describe it. But for me on a rainy day listening and watching this song is an aesthetic.
