광양에서 차 사고가 났다. 내가 콩 하고 뒤에서 박았다.. 사람이 안다친게 다행이라 생각하고 서울에 가는 기차를 탔다.

KTX를 타자마자 잠에 들었다. 용산역에 도착해서 재난문자 알람에 깼다. 확인은 안했다. 신용산역에서 4호선을 기다리고 있는데 핸드폰이 또 울렸다. 이어폰을 끼면서 한손으로 핸드폰을 켰다, 이태원 어쩌고 라는 재난문자가 3개쯤 왔지만 확인은 안했다. 코로나 주의 문자 쯤 으로 생각했다. 집에 도착하자 마자 잠을 잤다. 아침 8시에 같이 일하는 선생님에게 전화가 왔다. 혹시 어제 이태원 안갔냐고 물어봤다. 이태원에서 사고가 났다고 했다. 나는 2주 전에 이태원을 다녀왔다.

전염병이 퍼지고 골방과 산속을 오가며 푼돈을 벌다가 운좋게 서울에 일자리를 구했다. 사고가 일어났다는 게 처음에는 별 감흥이 없었다. 고등학교 2학년 수학여행을 다녀오고 일주일이 채 지나지 않은 어느 날 학교에서 실시간으로 본 배가 뒤집힌 모습은 한동안 기억에 박혀있었다. 몇 번 봄이 오고 가니 이젠 광화문에 노란 물결이 사라졌다. 전역 하고 반년뒤 코로나가 터졌다. 나는 그동안 모든 걸 받아들일 준비가 되있었다고 생각했다. 치열하게 살았다고 생각했다. 적은 월급으로 좁을 방에서 하루하루 버티며 일을 하고 있었다. 다들 비슷하지 않을까 하는 생각이 자꾸 들었다. 최소한의 행복으로 아슬하게 버티는 젊음인데 그것마저 잃으면 어디에 서있어야 할까.

영상속 이태원은 사이렌 소리가 가득했지만, 바로 옆 용산역은 고요했다. 아무리 어려워도 냉정하게 각자 책임을 다했다 하는 말홍수 속에서, 오히려 말하는 법을 까먹고 싶다.

요즘은 체념하게 더 쉽다. 내 뜻대로 되는게 그만큼 없기도 하고, 내 뜻대로만 흘러가도 안된다는걸 이제는 안다. 마음의 크기가 작아질 대로 작아졌는지 미워할 마음도 품지를 못한다. 이제는 그냥 맑은 하늘을 본 것 만으로 기쁜 느낌을 받는다. 내일은 당장 무엇을 잃어야 하나.
