Jeju 2016
Jeju Island is FULL of tourist attractions. We didn’t get to see as much as I had hope for, mostly due to overambitious planning and not being prepared enough.
Here’s what we did cover in 2.5 days:
1. Olle trail 06 [올레6코스]
We were supposed to do Olle trail 07 but we went the wrong way, hence, the detour.
Oedolgae 외돌개 [올레7코스] - The start of Olle trail 07.
2. Seongsan Ilchulbong [성산일출봉]
3. Seopjikoji [섭지코지]
I feel that we wasted our time and money coming here. Weather was gloomy and it’s not the easiest place to get to (we had to cab to and back). We came here in hopes of seeing the canola flowers (유채꽃), but we weren’t in luck.
Thinking back, given our limited time and Jeju’s not-so-great public transport system, it would have been best to hire a driver for the day. I think it would have set us back S$100, but we could have gone to many more places and that would have made up for it. All I can say is that it was a good learning experience.
Other places planned but did not visit:
Jusangjeolli Cliff, Jeongbang falls (정방 폭포), Cheonjeyeon falls (천제연 폭포), O’sulloc Tea Museum, Seongeup Folk Village.
4. Hallasan National Park [한라산국립공원]
- Yeongsil 영실로 trail up, Eorimok 어리목 down
Outline of our hike:
Alight off the bus at Yeongsil Ticket Booth > Hike 2.5km to the entrance of the trail (~50 minutes)> Hike up the 3.6km Yeongsil Trail (~2 hours)> Witseoreum shelter (lunch & toilet break ~30min) > Hike down the 4.7 km Eorimok Trail (~2 hours)> Hike down 10-15 minutes to the bus stop.Total time: 5 hours 30 minutes
“Hike” from the bus stop.
Views you can expect when it rains.
Yay we aren’t the only “crazy” ones!
Not quite convinced...
Other than Cherry blossoms and Canola flowers, another thing I was looking forward to were Azaleas. And I did not find them on Hallasan.
No surprise here but we woke up late again. And we missed the last bus back to Seopwipo, so we had to take a cab. They quotes us 50,000 won to go Sanbangsan, and 30,000 won to go JungMun. We took up the latter and flagged another cab down to go Sanbangsan. Saved 10,000 won in total haha.
5. Sanbangsan Mountain [산방산]
Just round 2 of bad weather. Except this was seaside, so the “sea breeze” was very strong.
Well Hello Azaleas.
Hey there Canola. Gloomy weather (poor light) and strong wind explain this bad photo. Some guy on the tractor saw us taking photo and asked us to pay 2,000 won each. J didn’t trust the guy (maybe he wanted to scam tourists), and I was too tired to give a damn honestly. Somehow we distracted the guy and ran off. Not our proudest moment.
Yongmeori Coast [용머리해안] is located nearby Sanbangsan. Of course by the time we reached, it was closed. Such a shame. It’s actually below. We tried to find an angle to see it, but we couldn’t.
All in all, we spent close to 100 SGD on cab in our two full days in Jeju. And unfortunately for us, both days had less than ideal weather.
Some advice:
If you drive, stay in Seopwipo. If you have to rely on public transport, stay in Jeju-si. The bus terminal in Jeju-si is better connected to more attractions than Seogwipo (although most attractions are there). And remember to plan wisely as buses are not that regular but are punctual.
On the bus, there’s a TV that displays the next and subsequent stop names in Korean, English, Mandarin and Japanese and they do announcements too. When you board the bus, you can tell the driver where you’re headed and they will key in the fare. Let’s say you have to do a transfer. If you don’t want to talk to the driver, then just board and tap your card but upon alighting remember to tap out! If you do tell the driver where you’re stopping, he will key in the fare, and when you alight you don’t need to tap out.
I would recommend downloading this app called Daum Maps! Although everything is in Korean, the expected time of arrival for the buses is accurate and they can also estimate taxi fare for you. Just save the addresses of attractions and your hotel in Korean on a note app. There’s also a jeju bus app but I couldn’t figure out how to use it. Make sure you familiarize yourself with any new apps before your trip.
