I'm pretty forgiving in general in shows I watch and like to appreciate what they do well. Not a big romance fan, just a fan of well-written characters, motivations, and relationships (and if those include a compelling romance, that's cool).

I grew up bicultural Korean in America, but have a "complicated" relationship with it because of poor choices by the Korean parent. As a result, I love to cook and eat Korean food, can read and write the characters, and know enough to order off the Korean menu at a restaurant. But I'm trying to learn more Korean now to check subtitle translations and for nuance in the fics I'm planning. Watching KDramas and thinking about them is my way of reclaiming that part of my heritage on my own terms. And I love some things that are done in the storytelling, especially the strong political themes in sageuks (historical dramas).

한국 역사 영화 <서울의 봄>이 누적 관객수 1200만을 넘기며 갑진년 새해에도 꺾이지 않는 흥행을 보여주고 있습니다.

지난 2023년 11월 22일에 개봉한 <서울의 봄>은 개봉 41일 차인 지난 1일 월요일에 누적 관객수 1200만을 넘겼다고 합니다.

김성수 감독의 역사 영화 <서울의 봄>은 수도 서울에서 군사 반란이 발생했던 1979년 12월 12일을 배경으로 권력을 잡기 위해 반란을 일으킨 전두광과 그가 이끄는 신군부 세력에 목숨을 걸고 맞섰던 이태신과 진압군의 이야기를 그린 작품인데요.

<노량: 죽음의 바다>가 개봉하기 전까지 무려 28일간 박스오피스 1위 자리를 유지했고, 1위 자리를 내주긴 했으나 개봉한 지 한 달이 넘은 영화라고는 믿기지 않을 정도로 낙폭을 줄이며 천만은 물론 2023년 흥행 영화 순위 1위에 오르는 기염을 토했습니다.

영화 <서울의 봄>은 개봉 41일차이자 갑진년 새해 첫 날인 2024년 1월 1일 월요일에 26만 관객을 동원하며 누적 관객수 1200만 명을 돌파하는 데 성공했는데요.

개봉 42일 차인 어제 2일에는 6만 7천 관객을 모으며 1218만을 기록, 팬들이 바라던 1212만을 넘어서기도 했습니다.

​

영화 <서울의 봄>은 지난 12월 20일에 개봉한 <노량: 죽음의 바다>의 뒤를 바짝 쫓으며 박스오피스 1위 자리를 탈환할 듯 말 듯 한 아슬아슬한 레이스를 펼쳐 보였는데요.

휴일이 끝나고 극장을 방문하는 관객수가 급감한 어제 노량과의 차이가 3천 명 정도로 좁혀지긴 했으나 오늘 개봉하는 <위시>가 실시간 예매율 1위를 기록하며 박스오피스 1위로 데뷔할 것이 유력하기 때문에 아쉽게도 박스오피스 1위 재탈환은 사실상 불가능에 가까워졌습니다.

그렇지만 <서울의 봄>이 지금까지 쌓아온 기록만 해도 충분히 대단하다고 할 수 있는데요.

<서울의 봄>은 개봉 42일 차인 어제 6만 관객으로 일일 관객수가 급감하긴 했지만 개봉 후 41일 연속으로 10만 명 이상의 일일 관객수를 기록한 최초의 한국 영화가 됐습니다. 휴일이 끝남과 동시에 기록이 멈추긴 했으나 <7번방의 선물> 이후 무려 11년 만에 새로 작성된 기록이라는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다고 할 수 있죠.

영화 <서울의 봄>은 누적 관객수 1200만 명을 돌파하며 <부산행>, <변호인>, <해운대>를 넘고 역대 영화 흥행 순위 TOP 17위에 오르게 됐는데요.

<위시>가 개봉하긴 했지만 서울의 봄의 흥행이 당장 멈추지는 않기 때문에 조금 더 높은 곳까지 충분히 바라볼 수 있는 상황이죠.

오늘 박스오피스 결과가 발표되면 <서울의 봄>은 <택시운전사>의 1218만 9천 관객을 넘고 역대 영화 흥행 순위 16위에 오르게 되는데요. 그 위는 이제 <신과함께-인과 연>, <광해, 왕이 된 남자>, <범죄도시2>, <암살>, <알라딘>이 11위까지 마크하고 있습니다.

이번 주 주말 흥행 결과에 따라 <서울의 봄>은 최소 <광해, 왕이 된 남자>의 14위까지 노려볼 수 있고, <범죄도시2>를 넘고 팬데믹 이후 최고 흥행작에도 오를 수 있을 것으로 예상되는데요.

in what is probably the last period drama i’ll have time to watch this year, the crowned clown was a hell of a way to wrap this up. what a great show, such clear direction and framing in almost every scene like!!! so refreshing to see! and what a fucking SOUNDTRACK baby... my eyes r leaking out of my skull after finishing this i am Never painting a single dallyeong again. but time well spent i think. obsessed w/ how for half of the show people are serving a nonexistent king, serving the Idea of him. everyone is bowing but the king is nowhere to be found

The Crowned Clown (review)

Timing at its finest. I kept getting this drama as a recommendation. And everytime, I kept delaying it for later. But YOU should NOT.

A serious thank you to all the people that recommended it to me. This is (one of) the best historical dramas I've watched so far. Everything is perfect : the cinematography, the cast, the soundtrack..this is a 10/10. I want to highlight Jang Young Nam's acting as the villain. This actress is the real deal. She's able to portray any type of characters. She's not a simple second lead role. She's the one.. Yeo Jin Go is impressive. He's got the aura of a very experienced actor when he's so young. And his relationships with the queen, Haksan and Eunuch Jo were emotional. My favorite scene is the death of the real king on the beach. Insanely beautiful. I won't give any more details. It was just a masterpiece. If you love historical/sageuk, you have to check this one out !

Personal Best K-Dramas 2019

Here are my selections for the best K-Dramas of 2019. As we all are busy with lives, not all could be seen but I try my best to be at least watching 2-4 at a time. 

Best Period Drama: The Crowned Clown / 왕이 된 남자 - tvN

My choice for the best historical, period drama of the year goes all the way back to the beginning of 2019. When a mad king, high on opioids thinks someone is trying to kill him, he constructs a plan to have an identical street clown sit on his throne to take the assassination. Turns out the clown makes a very fair king and falls for the Queen who has yet to have good relations with her King. Full of politics and romance, Yeo Jin-Goo gives a stellar performance as the two kings. Subtitled episodes can be found on Viki. 

Best Fantasy Drama: Hotel del Luna / 호텔 델루나 - tvN

One of the highest rated dramas of the year, Hotel del Luna follows the story of Jang Man-Wol played by IU, who after committing her crimes a thousand years ago has been tied to running a hotel for ghosts before they move on to the next stage. Her destiny to finally be freed is tied to the new human general manager Koo Chan-Sung (Yeo Jin-Goo). Hesitant at first about his destiny they become a solid team helping each other in their lives and heartwarmingly helping the staff and guests of the hotel. Best Medical Drama: Doctor John / 의사요한 - SBS

Doctor John was a surprising medical drama. Centered around a doctor who had previously been convicted for euthanasia. He is brought back to be the head of the pain relief department where he is seemingly able to find a cure for the most rare things. What people don’t know is that he suffers from a disease as well. Forever having excluded himself from personal relationships because of his disease he is able to grow to love and depend on one of the residents. Together they battle the debate of euthanasia and find a way to have a normal life for them. Ji Sung is stellar as Doctor John and Lee Se-Young really pulls off the caring and emotional struggles of her character. Subtitled episodes can be found on Viki. 

Best/Cutest Romance: Her Private Life / 그녀의 사생활 - tvN

Every once and awhile you need something warm and fuzzy to watch and for this year Her Private Life really hit the mark. Chief art curator Sung Deok-Mi (Park Min-Young), secretly is a super fanatic fangirl of a member of a boy group. One day her new boss, Ryan (Kim Jae-Wook) comes in and is a famous former painter who is chasing down paintings his birth mother painted before he was adopted. When one of their main clients happens to be the singer she idolizes, Deok-Mi tries to keep her fangirling secret and also gets caught in a web of lies where she and her boss need to pretend to be a couple. One of the best pretend couple to real couple romance dramas I have seen, the two lead actors pull of a really natural chemistry that is adorable and sexy along with their own dramatic side stories. Surprise Favorite: Search: WWW / 검색어를 입력하세요: WWW - tvN

When you initially read a drama will be about the battle between search engine companies… you would think this would be a total snoozefest. Centered around three powerful women working for two of the major search/news engines, this drama packs its punch with badass women getting shit done, realistic modern romances, and all the drama that comes working for powerful companies. It’s rare I clap so much being like “YESSSSS” over what is going on in a drama but the female leads of this drama, Im Soo-Jung, Lee Da-Hee, Jeon Hye-Jin I will gladly sign on to watch whatever else they are in after this. Battles over the law of privacy, conglomerate people controlling people’s lives and relationships with personal drama that feels more real than your generic “insert dramatic hill to climb” story lines. The soundtrack is also pretty addictive. Subtitled episodes can be found on Viki. 

Best 19/20 Drama: Crash Landing On You / 사랑의 불시착 - tvN

Every year we get dramas that start in late November/December that carry over into the next year. So as my year straddling drama choice, I am picking the currently airing Crash Landing on You. Starring Hyun Bin and Son Ye-Jin, a beautiful conglomerate heiress gets caught in a natural disaster as she is paragliding and ends up crash landing in North Korea. Found by a North Korean officer, he brings her to his home to try and protect her and help her get back to her home. Chaos ensues and they need to pretend to be engaged, any many other excuses but as they each battle their own problems love grows. Currently subtitled episodes can be watched weekly on Netflix.

Melting Me Softly: For a light hearted romance drama from tvN about two people that are frozen in capsules and accidentally stuck for 20 years, how they get about in the modern world and handle the side effects and growing love. 

Extraordinary You: Characters in a romantic comic start to become self aware of themselves and try to fight their predetermined story lines from the author. From MBC, subtitled episodes on Viki.
