커피에 곁들이기 좋은 에그타르트 만들기 '카페(Cafe)'라는 이름을 달고 있는 곳이 많아짐에 따라 그만큼 선택의 폭도 넓어졌습니다. 특히 커피 외에도 간단한 베이커리류를 즐길 수 있는 카페가 늘면서, 빵 굽는 냄새로 가득했던 제과점에서도 이제 당당히 커피와 디저트 메뉴를 판매하고 있는데요. 때문에 집 근처 혹은 회사 주변의 동네 카페 탐방에 나서게 되었어요! 그런데 그 중에서도 사람들의 발길을 붙잡는 핫 플레이스들이 종종 눈에 띄더라고요. 오늘 소개해드릴 광주 맛집 역시 그런 인기 가게들 가운데 하나인데요. 인스타그램 피드를 보니 이미 사진 찍기에 여념 없는 손님들이 많아서 방문 전부터 꼭 가봐야겠다고 다짐하기도 했답니다. 그래서 이번 주말, 여러분께 그곳으로 함께 가보실까요? ^-^ 광주의 숨겨진 카페, 양림동 "심다" 바로 이곳입니다. 심다는 생활한복 전문점인 바늘과 한 땀 한 땀 정성 들여 지은 떡집인 달달애와 함께 운영되고 있는 퓨전 한옥 카페예요. 광주의 골목 사이에 자리 잡고 있어, 평소라면 지나치기 십상인데 SNS상에서 워낙 유명한 카페라 입소문 듣고 찾아오시는 분들이 꽤 계시다고 하네요. 하지만 아쉽게도 현재 코로나19 확산 방지 차원에서 2월 29일까지 임시 휴업 중이라고 합니다 ᅲᅲ 당분간은 문 닫았으니, 3월 초쯤 다시 오픈할 예정이라고 해요~! (다시 돌아올 때는 방역 수칙 지키며 안전하게 오겠습니다!! ᄒᄒ) 출입문 옆에 놓여있는 입간판을 통해 이 공간의 정체성을 조금 더 자세히 �� 수 있었는데요. 본래 한복점이었던 건물을 리모델링하여 카페로 탈바꿈시킨 것이라고 합니다. 내부 인테리어 역시 굉장히 독특합니다. 다양한 소품을 활용하여 한옥 특유의 분위기를 살리면서도 현대적인 요소를 적절히 조화시켰거든요. 한복 디자인이나 실내

Day Trip: Exploring Gwangju in a Day

Today was a day well spent in Gwangju city. 

If you’re new here, Gwangju is located in the southwest corner of South Korea. It’s nearly three hours south of Seoul and three hours west of Busan. Basically where I live.

A friend from the UK had messaged me that she would be traveling in South Korea for a few weeks. So surely, I told her that Gwangju is a city worth visiting even in the winter just for a day or two. We walked around and did some of the best things to do in Gwangju.

Quick Gwangju Info: Gwangju is probably best known for the Gwangju Massacre of May 18, 1980, in which at least 207 students were killed by army forces suppressing a pro-democracy demonstration. What this means is that Gwangju was at the forefront of the democratic movement in South Korea. Many spots in Gwangju are labeled “5.18″ to remember this movement.

If you visit the Asia Culture Center (국립아시아문화전당) in Gwangju, you could easily see and learn more about the importance of 5.18 and its impact on Gwangju’s people.

I’ve visited the Asia Culture Center tens and tens of times over these past two years. It was my first and favorite place to explore in South Korea.

And an Urgent ‘Life in Korea’ Tip: Bookmark these places on your Kakao Maps or Naver Maps app on your smartphone, or do it on their official website. These apps are helpful for car, bus, train, subway, bicycling, and walking navigation throughout Korea. I bookmark everything on Kakao Maps.

Great Places to Visit in Gwangju:

Asia Culture Center (국립아시아문화전당,

Art Street (예술의 거리) with local cafe/tea shops,

Gwangju Park (광주공원),

Penguin Village (양림동 펭귄마을), 

Youth Balsan Village (청춘 발산 마을),

Gwangju U Square Bus Terminal (has CGV, cafes, restaurants)

Asia Culture Center (국립아시아문화전당)

Asia Culture Center is a great center to start when exploring Gwangju. It recently opened in 2014 to showcase art, history, architecture, languages, food, and everything else you could imagine related to Asia. When in Gwangju, you must visit the ACC.

If you walk in Library Park, put your bags in the lockers, then enter the Asia exhibition hall or wander around the center.

Art Street (예술의 거리) in Gwangju

Next to The Asia Culture Center is Art Street (예술의 거리), which is usually a quiet street with some art galleries and minimal sculptures. Keep your eyes open for hidden street art too. If it’s a Friday night or holiday, you may even hear some live singers or music playing.

Behind The Asia Culture Center, almost near the police station, is an entire section of aesthetic cafes and teahouses.

Today’s weather wasn’t too cold for winter, so an outdoor adventure to the Gwangju Park, Sajik Park, Penguin Village (양림동 펭귄마을), and Youth Balsan Village (청춘 발산 마을) seemed like a great plan for places to visit in Gwangju.

Gwangju Park

This was my first official time visiting Gwangju Park. It’s also next to Sajik Park and the Penguin Village neighborhood.

Sajik Park (사직공원) in Gwangju 

Sajik Park is special to me. A week before I started my job as an English teacher, a Korean friend, who I had randomly met in a cafe invited me with his friends to Sajik Park and then to eat some classic K-BBQ in the Asia Culture Center grass park.

Sajik Park has an awesome observatory with a 360-degree view of Gwangju’s mountains, universities, and all of its city. Don’t miss out on the interior of the observatory for some extra history of Gwangju and star constellation designs on the ceiling. 

The bottom of Sajik Park has Guitar Street, where you can learn about Korean musicians or stop by a cafe for some live music. This is on my Gwangju bucket list.

Penguin Village (양림동 펭귄마을) in Gwangju

The Penguin Village was under some construction at this time, but we were still able to see some of the antique penguin-shaped art pieces. This was my fourth time visiting it within my two years in Korea, but I’ll surely visit again in the spring season to see the renovations!

Chungchon Balsan Village (청춘 발산 마을) or The Radiating Youthfulness Village

We also saved ourselves an hour of public transportation travel time by taking Kakao Taxi to the colorful Youth Balsan Village, where people from around the country moved here in the 70′s and 80′s to work at the Jeonnam Textile Factory just across the Gwangju River. I rarely take a taxi, but when I do, I try to practice my Korean skills with the driver! Maybe I should take more taxis ㅋㅋㅋ so that I can be fluent already.

People still live in these colorfully painted homes of the Chungchon Balsan Village (청춘 발산 마을) today. This was also my fourth time visiting this village, but I just love the colorful energy here.

Restaurants and Shopping Street (금청남로) (near the Asia Culture Center)

Lastly, going to the 금청남로 shopping street back by the Asia Culture Center area is great for window shopping, to find a cafe or restaurant for some delicious food. 

Next time in warmer weather, I’ll head to the Gwangju City Hall and Uncheon Reservoir to see the beautiful cherry blossom trees in full bloom.
