Artist Statement 작가 노트

On thirteen canvases I inherited from the late painter Kim Young-duk, I capture the views seen on my daily walks in the valleys and forests around Sutasa Temple in Hongcheon. Goyang, a city near Seoul where Kim used to paint in his atelier, is located at a similar latitude as Hongcheon. I had the idea of crossing these connection points that transcend time and place. I attempted to visualize a world where ‘life’ and ‘death’ merge and seem to disappear, but are actually filled with dreams of new beginnings.

고 김영덕 작가님의 유품으로 양도받은 13점의 캔버스 위에 매일 홍천 수타사 주변의 계곡과 숲을 오가며 본 것들을 담았다. 작가님의 아뜰리에가 있는 고양은 홍천과 비슷한 위도 상에 위치한다. 시간과 장소를 초월한 연결지점을 횡단한다는 마음이었다. ‘생’ 과 ‘사’ 가 합쳐져 사라지는 것처럼 보이지만 새로운 시작을 향한 꿈틀거림이 가득한 세상을 시각화 했다.

Curator Note 큐레이터 노트

Bae Mi-jeong’s thirteen canvases are bound together by the geographic outline of Hongcheon and filled with various images based on the artist’s experiences here, creating a connected work. Between the green landscapes and the various images of Hongcheon, there are white spaces on the canvases, and there are also three white canvases between the painted canvases. These gaps are suggest an ambivalence between the boundaries of Hongcheon on a map and the empirical images, but they also reveal the surface nature of the canvas as an object with an otherness coming from beyond Hongcheon – as well as the artist’s ambivalence with regard to these surface boundaries. 배미정의 13개의 캔버스는 홍천 지도의 윤곽으로 묶이고, 그 안에는 작가가 홍천에서 체험했던 여러 다양한 이미지가 채워져 연결성을 가진 하나의 작품으로 완성된다. 초록색 풍광의 배경과 다양한 홍천의 이미지 사이에는 캔버스의 하얀 간격이 자리하고, 또한 그림이 그려진 캔버스들 사이에 자리한 빈 세 개의 캔버스라는 하얀 간격이 자리한다. 이러한 간격들은 홍천이라는 지도로서의 경계와 체험적으로 배태된 이미지 사이의 머뭇거림이면서 홍천 너머에서 온 타자성을 지닌 사물로서의 캔버스가 가진 지표성을 고스란히 드러낸다―동시에 그 드러냄이 작가의 머뭇거림이기도 하다. Artist Statement 작가 노트

Untangling the short cuts of crossing Hongcheon into the realms of the living and the dead. Proceeding through the human body, a passageway. Those who are joint by this channel also need a space to keep their physical form. As an outsider, I simply tried to paint the outside of this space, its bare skin. In the same sense, the lives of religious persons, whether Buddhist, Christian, or whatever, mediate between humans and god(s). And since they are also human beings themselves, they need a space in reality to gather and practice, which is revealed to us, the outsiders, in the form of a house or a temple or a church. I can merely see the outside of it, and I can only paint it.

홍천횡단 축지법을 이승과 저승으로 풀어보다. 인간 신체로 경유, 몸이 통로. 그 통로로서 매개하는 그들도 인간의 육체를 뉘일 집이 있어야 한다. 나는 그냥 외부인으로서 그 집 바깥(표피)만을 그려보았다. 같은 의미로 종교인으로의 삶 역시 그것이 불교든 그리스도교든 무엇이든 간에 신과 인간을 매개하는데, 그들 역시 인간이기에 모여살고 수행할 공간이 현실에 필요하다. 그것은 집의 형태나 절과 교회의 형태로 외부인인 우리에게 드러난다. 나는 또 그것의 외부만을 볼 수 있고 그려낼 수 있을 뿐이다.

What could landscapes mean to Lee Eun Kyong, an artist who used to paint many variations of her self-portrait? As a combination of heterogeneous colors and lines and as an environment of a certain atmosphere, they reveal the distance between artist and object. The artist reproduces the landscape as such: behind their unique appearance, the artist remains as an invisible figure, trying to stabilize it. (Kim Min-kwan)

평소 자화상의 여러 변주된 형상을 주로 창출해온 이은경에게 풍경이란 어떤 의미일까. 그것은 색과 선의 이질적 조합의 형상 그리고 어떤 분위기의 환경으로서 작가와 사물과의 거리를 드러낸다. 작가는 그것을 고스란히 재현한다. 곧 독특한 보임의 형식 뒤에 그것을 안정화하려는, 보이지 않는 작가의 형상이 있다. (김민관)
