jiwoong had been working on his latest movie project for weeks now, and he was starting to feel the toll it was taking on his body and mind. the only thing keeping him going was the thought of seeing you - his girlfriend. as soon as he spotted you, he ran towards you and engulfed you in a tight embrace, inhaling your sweet scent. you laughed at your boyfriends sudden clinginess, but reciprocated the hug nonetheless. “I missed you.” jiwoong whispered into your ear, you rubbing his back soothingly. “I missed you too.” you whispered back. jiwoong didn't want to let go of you just yet, so he wrapped his arm around your waist as the both of you walked towards his trailer. he leaned his head on your shoulder, enjoying your warmth and the feeling of being close to you. “you’re my favorite person, (y/n).” your boyfriend murmured, causing you to smile. “i better be! i’m the only one you’ve got.” you teased, poking his side playfully. jiwoong chuckled, but his grip on you tightened. he nuzzled his face into your neck, feeling content and at ease in your presence. jiwoong didn't want this moment to end, but he knew he had to go back to filming soon. “I wish you could stay here with me forever.”

hao had been practicing playing the violin for hours, trying to perfect a new piece. his fingers were sore and his mind was exhausted, but all he could think about was you. he decided to take a break and texted you to come over. as soon as you arrived, hao wrapped his arms around your waist and rested his head on your shoulder. “hey,” he mumbled, his voice tired but affectionate. "i missed you so much today." you smiled, running your fingers through his hair. "i missed you too, hao. how’s the practicing going?" hao groaned and pulled away slightly, leaning against the wall for support. "it's so frustrating. i can't seem to get this piece right." you placed a gentle kiss on his forehead. “don’t stress to much, hao. you’re amazing.” hao nodded, grateful for your words of comfort. he leaned in again, wrapping his arms tightly around your waist and burying his face in your neck. "i just want to be close to you, is that okay?" hao hesitated for a while. you laughed softly, running your hands up and down his back. “what do you mean? why wouldn’t it be? i love you.” hao smiled, his eyes closed in contentment. “i love you too.” you stood there in comfortable silence, enjoying each other's company and the feeling of being close.

hanbin was sitting on the bed, you busy with your books and notes spread out in front of you. he had planned to play some video games but found himself more interested in snuggling up to you. he leaned over, resting his chin on your shoulder, watching you study. “you look so cute when you're studying,” he said, pressing a quick kiss to your cheek. you smiled, continuing to write down some notes, trying not to be distracted by his affectionate gestures. “hanbin, i need to finish studying.” you reminded him gently, hoping he would let go and let you concentrate. “just a few more minutes,” he pleaded, not wanting to let go of you just yet. “you're so warm and cozy.” as you continued to work, hanbin played with your hair, occasionally pressing a kiss to your temple or neck. despite his clinginess, you couldn't help but find it endearing and a welcome distraction from your schoolwork. after what felt like hours, you finally finished studying and let out a sigh of relief. hanbin beamed at you, pulling you into a tight hug. 페낭 복방 거상들은 지연과 방언과 혈연에다 타 지역, 타 성씨, 타 종족과 다분히 정략적인 혼인을 함으로써 ‘혼맥’의 유대를 추가했다. 이들의 혼맥은 지역적으로 말라카해협 북부의 말레이반도(커다, 페락), 수마트라 북부(아체, 메단, 아사한), 태국 남부(푸켓 라농, 트랑), 버마 남부(양곤)를 망라했다. 혼맥으로 본다면 페낭 화인권은 페낭 화인엘리트의 ‘확장된 가족’이었다. 페낭 화인사회는 페낭 교역권의 유력 상인, 정치인과 혼맥을 통해 다양한 가문과 방파와 인종을 포괄하는 동맹체를 구축했다(Wong, 2007: 張少寛, 2002, 2203: Wu, 2010).

무능한 자유방임의 식민 당국도, 유동적인 토착 정치세력도 상업적 이익을 보호해준다는 확실한 보장이 없는 상황에서 혼맥은 불가피한 전략이었던 셈이다.

페낭 화인사회에서 복건 5대 성씨(쿠, 치아, 림, 여, 탄)와 또 다른 복건 출신 명문가인 코Koh辜 씨, 옹Ong王 씨, 간Gan顔 씨, 리Lee李 씨 등의 거상들은 거의가 사돈이나 겹사돈으로 얽혔다. 이들의 혼맥은 다시 타종족과 타 지역의 혼맥으로 확장됐다.

1867년 8월 3일 조지타운 시가에 폭력과 살육이 난무했다. 복건 출신 비밀결사 건덕당과 동맹인 인도인-말레이인 비밀결사 홍기회紅旗會Red Flag Society가 편을 먹고, 광방 비밀결사 의흥회와 손을 잡은 인도인-말레이인 비밀결사 백기회白旗會White Flag Society가 맞서 시가전을 벌인 것이다.[*홍기화와 백기회는 페낭에서 조직되어 싱가포르와 말라야로 확산된 인도인-말레이인의 비밀결사이다. 두 결사는 1830년대 페낭의 자위 페라나칸과 인도인 무슬림 공동체의 종교적 상호부조 조직으로 결성되어 1850년대 후반 화인 비밀결사의 영향을 받아 자치 · 자조 · 자위의 비밀결사로 바뀌었다. 홍기회와 건덕당은 1863년, 백기회와 의흥회는 1865년 각각 동맹을 맺은 것으로 알려졌다. Musa(1999, 152) 참조] 중국인 3만 명과 인도인 · 말레이인 4,000명이 참가한 이 폭동으로 조지타운은 10일 동안 마비됐다. 이 과정에서 450~500명이 숨지고 조지타운의 건물 1,000여 채가 불에 탔다. 해협식민지 당국은 이 폭동이 중국인 비밀결사 간의 오랜 분쟁에서 비롯되었다고 진단했다(Wynne, 1941: 249~250).

하지만 페낭 폭동은 비밀결사의 분쟁으로 단순화하기 힘든 복잡한 사안이다. 인도인-말레이인 비밀결사인 홍기회와 백기회가 전면에 나선 것을 단순히 화인 비밀결사 건덕당과 의흥회의 대리전이라 단정하기도 힘들다. 1786년 영국의 페낭 점거 이래 80년에 걸친 다양한 정치적 · 이념적 · 종교적 · 인종적 · 문화적 갈등과 무책임한 식민 당국을 향한 불만이 내재되어 있기 때문이다. 사실 영국 식민 당국은 페낭 폭동에서 페낭의 화인과 인도인-말레이인이 비밀결사를 통해 동맹을 맺은 정치적 함의에 관해 가장 촉각을 곤두 세웠다(Musa, 1999: 151, Pieris, 2003: 9~12). 구조적인 원인들이 중첩되기는 하지만 페낭 폭동의 도화선이 아편팜에 있다는 점은 분명해 보인다. 표면적으로는 아편팜을 둘러싸고 중국인 비밀결사들이 동맹세력인 홍기회와 백기회를 앞세워 대리전을 펼친 양상이었던 것이다. 중요한 것은 왜 아편팜의 독점이 비밀결사에게 그토록 중요했느냐는 점이다. 이는 페낭의 사회경제적 배경에 닿아 있다.

1867년 5월 1일부터 1869년 4월 3일까지 2년간 페낭 아편팜의 경매를 앞두고 입찰금액이 연간 9만 4,200달러로 예상됐다. 이전 기간 연간 전매료 7만 8,000달러를 크게 상회한 금액이었다. 이 경매에서 의흥회가 건덕당의 오랜 독점을 깨뜨리고 아편팜을 수중에 넣었다. 페낭 건덕당 지도부는 위기감에 휩싸였다. 본부인 페낭의 아편팜이 흔들리면 페낭 화인권의 아편팜들도 덩달아 흔들린다. 게다가 주석 러시가 속도를 더할 때였다. 당시는 다가올 1870년의 세계적 대불황의 먹구름이 짙어지고 있었지만 주석시장만큼은 호황이었다. 미국 남북전쟁(1861~65)이 끝나면서 군용으로 쓰이던 통조림이 시장으로 쏟아져 나왔다. 주석은 더 캐야 하고, 쿨리도 더 수입되어야 했다. 그런데 아편팜을 잃으면 노동 통제도 잃는다. 아편 문제로 광산이나 농원이 굴러가지 않는 일이 흔했다.

의흥회가 아편팜의 독점을 깨뜨리자 건덕당이 동맹관계인 홍기회를 앞세워 의흥회의 아편팜을 방해했다. 그러자 의흥회는 백기회를 내세웠다. 페낭의 인도인과 말레이인은 19세기 초 화인 비밀결사의 영향을 받아 비밀결사를 결성한 것으로 알려졌다. 중국인의 아편팜 갈등에 인도인-말레이인 비밀결사 지도부가 나선 것은 자신들도 화인 비밀결사와 경제적 이해가 맞물렸기 때문이다. 앞서 봤듯이 건덕당 지도부와 홍기회 지도부는 사업과 혼맥으로 얽혀 있다.

두 세력이 맞붙은 곳은 건덕당과 복방 5대 콩시가 있는 곳에서 약간 떨어진 조지타운의 상업 밀집 지구였다. 첫 전투에서 사고는 없었다. 하지만 곧바로 건덕당과 홍기회는 의흥회의 아편팜을 방해하기 위해 비밀결사의 행동대원 수천 명을 동원회 의흥회와 백기회가 운영하는 상점과 창고, 부두를 공격했다. 복건 출신과 인도인, 말레이인, 아체인지, 자바인, 그리고 푸켓과 프라이, 커다, 페락에서 온 인도인, 말레이인과 광동 · 조주 · 객가 출신 의흥회 행동대원들이 건덕당-홍기회 동맹에 반격했다.

재력에 앞선 건덕당은 소총과 소형 대포로 무장하고 쿠콩시의 옥상에서 대포를 쏘아댔다. 페낭의 복방은 무기 수입의 독점권을 지니고 있었다. 이는 페낭 식민 당국이 그간 페낭 화인사회에서 복방의 건덕당을 파트너로 인정하고 있었다는 것을 뜻한다. 건덕당 앞의 도로가 ‘캐논가Cannon St.’란 이름을 얻은 것도 페낭 폭동 이후의 일이다. 의흥회-백기회 진영은 회원이나 동원된 행동대원의 수에서 월등했지만, 총포 등의 화력에선 건덕당-홍기회에 크게 미치지 못했다.[*페낭 폭동 당시 비���결사의 회원 수가 건덕당(3,000명)과 홍기회(1,000명)는 4,000명인데 반해 의흥회와 백기회 동맹은 2만 5,000명에 달했다. Musa(1999: 163) 참조) 조지타운은 혼돈에 빠졌다. 하지만 이는 건덕당이 바라던 바였다. 이 틈에 건덕당은 아편을 대량 밀수했다. 아편팜의 최대 적은 밀수와 밀매였다.

건덕당은 쿠콩시 내에 있고, 5대 콩시의 세 곳도 길 하나 사이로 인접해 있다. 쿠콩시에서 비치가를 건너면 곧장 부두로 이어진다. 포탄이 날고, 양측 행동대원들이 난투극을 벌이는 틈에 쿠콩시와 건덕당으로 밀수된 아편 상자와 외부의 행동대원들이 속속 들어왔다. 그리고 밀수된 아편이 의흥회 아편팜보다 싼 값에 아편 가게와 아편굴로 팔려나갔다(Wong, 2007: 63~70).

폭동은 걷잡을 수 없이 확대되었고, 해협식민지 군대가 동원되고서야 진정됐다. 열흘간의 폭동과 포격으로 조지타운 시가가 엉망이 됐다. 이보다 더 큰 피해를 입은 것은 의흥회의 아편팜이었다. 10일간의 밀수와 밀거래로 의흥회의 아편팜 독점권은 손 쓸 수 없이 훼손되었다. 아편팜을 확보한지 석 달 만에 벌어진 폭동으로 의흥회는 식민 당국에 해마다 내기로 한 전매료를 납부할 수 없는 처지가 됐다. 마침내 페낭의 식민 당국은 의흥회의 아편함을 취소하고 이듬해인 1868년 6월 다시 경매에 붙였다. 당시 건덕당의 영수 쿠톈테익이 페낭 폭동의 주모자로 지목되어 수감된 상황에서 건덕당의 지도부였던 리셍토Lee Seng Toh/Lee Toh李成都와 옹분켕Ong Bun Keng王文慶이 9만 달러로 응찰해 1868년 7월부터 1870년 3월까지 2년간의 페낭 아편팜을 탈환하는데 성공했다. 1855~1870년의 15년간 의흥회의 범광방이 페낭의 아편팜을 확보한 건 페낭 폭동으로 얼룩진 1867년 5월~1868년 6월까지의 1년뿐이다(Wong, 2007: 70).

1867년 페낭 폭동은 페낭 화인사회의 약점을 노출했다. 역설적으로 폭동의 최대 피해자는 페낭 화인사회였다. 그간 영국 해골정부는 자치라는 이름으로 화인사회를 방임하고, 화인 비밀결사를 인정했다. 이러한 느슨한 간접지배 아래서 페낭의 화인사회가 자율성과 정치력을 발휘할 수 있었던 것도 사실이다. 이는 화인사회의 엘리트와 비밀결사가 내부 갈등을 조정할 수 있었기에 가능한 일이기도 했다. 영국 식민 당국의 자유방임이란 실상 ‘안전을 지켜주지는 못하지만 이익은 보장해주겠다’며 화인사회 엘리트와 맺었던 동맹으로 지탱되었다. 그런데 화인사회의 엘리트는 1867년의 폭동을 스스로 제어하지 못했다. 해골정부와 화인사회 엘리트의 동맹에 균열이 불가피해진 것이다.

페낭 폭동 이후 영국의 식민정책도 변화가 일기 시작했다. 페낭 폭동 직전 페락 라룻의 주석광산에선 중국인 방파 간에 두 차례의 ‘전쟁’이 벌어졌다. 페낭 폭동만큼은 아니었지만 싱가포르에서도 방파 갈등으로 인한 폭동이 잇달았다. 게다가 페낭 폭동이 발발하기 넉 달 전 해협식민지는 ���국 정부가 관할하는 ‘직할 식민지Crown Colony’로 바뀌었다. 직할 식민지로의 전환은 영국 동인도회사의 ‘방임’에서 영국 제국의 ‘관리’로 식민정책의 전환을 의미했다. 폭동 이후 해협식민지는 화인사회의 통제를 강화하기 시작했다. 18781년 해협식민지 전역을 관할하는 경찰국이 신설됐고, 화인사회의 비밀결사를 규제하는 법령도 제정됐다.
