Backstory

The Recruiter’s story begins in Seoul, where he was born into a poverty-stricken home. His father was a man consumed by greed and addiction; often involving himself in gambling and debt. He often lost jobs because of his inability to commit himself to anything. The Recruiter's mother once worked as a kindergarten teacher but had to give up her job after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She and her husband tried to scrape together what money they had for treatment, but even after taking out their emergency savings, they still couldn't afford it. He invested in pyramid schemes using the bereavement money that was left to them. Time and time again, he was scammed, leaving he and his son with nothing. When The Recruiter tried to make his father see how much worse he was making their lives, the situation took a nasty turn and violence became a constant part of their home life.

At 14, the Recruiter left home, deciding he could no longer live with that disgusting, pathetic man. He wandered the streets and struggled to survive; he despised his father for being too weak to protect the family. His bitterness towards poverty and those who were "too weak to fight" burned in him, fuelling his hatred of the lower class. For two years, he bounced from place to place, until a worker for the Games took notice of his brutality when they witnessed a vicious fight between the Recruiter and a man in the street.

At 16, the Recruiter was invited to the Game as a masked guard—a position that introduced him to a new world of violence, power, and order. Figuring he had nothing to lose, the Recruiter accepted and went along to the isolated island where the Game takes place. At first, he started out transporting and burning the bodies of the losers of the Game. Over time, the creators, particularly Oh Il-nam, saw potential in him. His ruthlessness during a crucial task—executing his own father during one of the games—proved that he could be trusted to follow through on any order. Even as his father, who was there to make up for his wrongdoings, was crying and pleading in front of him (with no knowledge that it was his son holding the gun) the Recruiter felt no sympathy or love. He shot him in the head without hesitation or remorse. He even felt joy while doing so, coming to understand that this was the sort of life he was cut out for. For once in his life, he felt like his existence was finally being acknowledged. His promotion was swift, and his loyalty to the system of the Game became unwavering.

The Recruiter is a cold and calculating psychopath with a twisted sense of superiority. He views people as disposable, especially those who are poor and desperate. He believes that misery is a reflection of moral weakness and that people who suffer deserve to suffer more. To him, the Game is a cleansing process, a way to weed out the unworthy.

While outwardly charming, polite, and well-spoken, there is an undercurrent of menace in everything he says. He enjoys manipulating people, playing psychological games, and watching others squirm in fear. He is sadistic, deriving pleasure from terrorizing those he deems unworthy, and takes satisfaction in their suffering. Yet, he is also a masochist—finding pleasure in pain, particularly when it serves to reinforce his belief that the world is cruel and only the strong survive.
