Is anyone else here an old Taiwan pop fan? Because as much as I am loving and obsessing over Unknown, I am 100% relating to all the interviewers who are essentially looking at Chris and going "What do you mean you did a BL?" (But like specifically Da Ye getting 'mad' and pretending to puke every time Chris does fanservice 🤣🤣🤣)

Also, when I tell you Chris is relatively tame this time around in promotions...he's taking this older brother persona seriously. I'm hoping as promotions continue he gets a little more unhinged. Like The Iron Four promotion unhinged. Because you can see the suppressed glee in his eyes every time his friends have to be professional and ask him questions about the show and he gets to answer in a way that makes them want to hit him

Reviews: Homophobic Cop Marries Gay Ghost, President’s Son Gets Together with Prince

Recently watched 2 movies with gay main characters in different genres. One was Red, White & Royal Blue (available on Amazon), one was 🌟 Marry My Dead Body 关于我和鬼变成家人的那件事 (available on Netflix). Spoiler-free thoughts below 😊:

❤️🤍💙 Red, White & Royal Blue is an American romcom. It has a 10/10 trailer—incredibly inviting. The movie depicts many women in power, I love that! Many witty jokes, nice! The movie might be better if it were a drama series instead; to save time, it zoomed through the falling-in-love part with the use of text messages—the production team packaged that as well as they could, but it was still too rushed. The ending left me wondering if there could’ve been a tiny bit more to make it feel more complete. Though the movie doesn’t score as highly as its trailer in my opinion, it’s still a decent movie.

(That reminds me of how That Musical Montage in episode 1 of the Heaven Official’s Blessing donghua made me super keen to watch the rest of the series, but it turns out that that was the best part. Quality-wise, Red, White & Royal Blue is overall better than the TGCF donghua though.)

👻👮‍♂️💓 Marry My Dead Body is a Taiwanese mystery + comedy + supernatural movie. Let me copy the blurb from Google: “Wu Ming-Han, a straight policeman who is homophobic and ghost-phobic, accidentally picks up a red wedding envelope while collecting evidence. He finds himself betrothed to the envelope's owner Mao Pang-Yu, a gay man who died under mysterious circumstances. The duo must work through their differences and join forces to solve the case, seeking justice for Mao.” (Real-life context: marriages between dead people and live ones are/were an actual thing in Chinese culture.)

I’ve just finished watching this movie, love it! Let me get the “con” out of the way first: I wish the movie ended differently! The ending was not unsatisfying, it’s just that I personally could have been more satisfied.

Okay, now I am free to gush.

This movie is HILARIOUS. Won’t describe the humour here, you can see it in the trailers on YouTube.

I love the unravelling of the mysteries (police cases). The feelings would not have hit half as hard without them and the exploration of Maomao’s non-romantic relationships (formed during his life) after his death. Even though I highly value a good plot apart from the romance when I read/watch something, I like talking about feelings more, so that’s what I’ll do.

I have Intense Feelings about these guys. They went from being Not Keen about getting stuck with each other to being really cute together—I notice that the movie managed to do this EVEN WITHOUT having them hold hands or do anything physical beyond that. That is crazy. Romantic physical contact is great, but if you can show chemistry without it, and with minimal flirting—that is exceptional.

(Side note: I think it would be harder to convincingly depict a heterosexual pair arriving at romantic feelings the way Wu Ming-Han and Maomao did: (partly) through constant banter and trading barbs. A man looking down on a woman would have come across as a lot meaner because the threat that poses is larger in the patriarchal society we live in.)

Wu Minghan went from casually homophobic to being on track for bisexuality for a ghost, such character development. The scene where Wu Minghan genuinely calls Maomao “my husband” for the first time is AMAZING, unexpected. At that moment I was like, oh my god, he loves him. Or at the very least, he has good potential. It had taken a series of hilarious strong-arming, including a close call with the loss of Wu Minghan’s family jewels, to make this dude marry Maomao, but now he’s calling Maomao husband—in that particular state, at that timing. I cried. I was smiling at many points throughout the movie, I also cried at some points. I said something similar when I wrote my review for Merman’s Fall: a book/movie that makes me laugh and cry will go at the top of my favourites list. Unlike my danmei list, my favourite movies list is too short for me to put Marry My Dead Body at the top or bottom, but it’s definitely in there.

Dragons and Hoarding 龍與囤寶習性

I remember seeing somewhere on this concept of accepting the humanity, or the influence of, in our nonhuman identities.

Where some idea we have towards some preestablished creature, and how we think we should behave and have instincts of, perhaps the way how this world's human sees them have affected how we see ourselves. This sort of phenomenon and acknowledgement I think is more natural for fictionfolk, conceptfolk, or others that have more human touch like objectfolk. I recon there likely a lot of resistance from generally nonhuman focused subcommunity.

(I'm adopting -folk suffix from the fictionfolk term, denoting any general alterhuman relation or identities tied to that subject. So say objectfolk would be anyone that may have some sort of relation towards objects, whether it be an archetrope, heartedness, or the vaguest sense of connection, etc)

Whenever we talk about draconity, about 9 out of 10 people think of hoarding. And it's like the most natural behavioral instinct to associate with draconity. But just like there are more than meat-eating, fire-breathing, webbed-winged, scaled, large 6-limbed lizard dragons, there are dragons who don't hoard.

I think about it sometimes, about my participation in the topic of hoarding and draconity, about my own inconsistent hoarding tendencies. Am I performing what is expected of me from other fellow dragons, or what humans expect of dragons? Do I truly have the instinct to hoard, or is it just other mental health or neurotype factors? Orthohuman has the term hoarder, other creatures besides dragons hoard, why is hoarding such a big defining draconic trait?

我記得在某處看到這種接受人性，或是人性對我們非人類的身分所有的影響的概念。

就是這種對於現有的物種，和我們該如何表現，或該有什麼樣的本能，甚至是對於種種物種的認知是否有些觀念是來自人類的，這樣的一個觀點。我覺得這樣的一個現象和認可，或許對於來自故事或跟構思概念相連的的眾民[1]，或是跟人類有密切關係的物件眾民，是比較自然而然的。我想在較專注於非人類自我的分群裏頭，會對於這樣的觀點產生比較大的牴觸。

(我把-folk/眾民，這個後綴從fictionfolk拿來配用在其他的身分上頭。眾民/-folk這個尾綴是在表示跟一個主題有任何人另經驗[2]的關係或自我認同。比如說，物件眾民是任何跟物品有可能相關聯的個體。不論是典型套路[3]的自我特點，心連[4]，甚至於是最模糊的關係等。)

每當我們討論到龍性的時候，十之八九總會提到龍收珍藏寶。這算是最常跟龍性聯想在一起的習性本能。不過就像是龍並不只有食肉噴火，蝠翼鱗身，四足兩翼的巨大蜥蜴龍種，有的龍是不收寶的。

我有時候會在參與龍性與收寶的主題討論時，思考著我自己不規則的收寶傾向。我難道依照其他龍的預想，或是人們對龍的期望，來作了個演出？我是真的有收寶的龍本能，還是這只是受心理健康或神經多樣的影響？原人類[5]有囤積者這樣一個字眼，龍以外有其他的生物也會收藏囤寶，為什麼龍囤寶的習性會這麼的凸顯呢？

翻譯筆記 Translation note

1- 眾民 (-folk), the totality of a group of people A lot of the translation of this nature that denotes a group of people or just people, in general, uses the words or have connotations strictly containing humanity. I want it to be species vague and still show "the totality of this subculture", thus 眾 (the populace), and 民 (the people, the denizens) are organized in this way. Can be shortened to just the first character used. 很多folk的翻譯字只帶有人類這樣的含意，我想要表達一個物種模糊的感覺，然後保持著「所有在這個分群裏頭的個體」這樣的一個概念，所以把民眾反了過來用。也可以單純寫[物種]眾。 2- 人另經歷 (alterhuman), human(ity) alternative experience. The translation doesn't use the words that denote a "physical experience" (體驗) but a more general, almost mental experience. The specific one is picked because alterhumanity is a lifelong experience, and it is vague on how it is experienced. The way the words are arranged, instead of 另人 (alternative human) is exactly that (人另). The ambiguity provided by the swap in position gives more room for human and nonhuman alterhuman experiences alike. Experience有幾個翻譯，體驗是其中一個。不過體驗的體給我太大「這是身體的經驗」感太強了，所以我用了一個比較概誇籠統，比較心神上的體驗來作翻譯。用經歷���因為這是一個終身的經驗和體驗，這樣翻也會在如何體驗方面顯得比較模糊。Alterhuman，或是Alternative Human 直翻是另類人類，那個的含意和感覺都不好，況且跟英文不同，真的去強調人類。反過來之後的含糊感給了我更多空間來表達人類另外經驗所包含的人和非人的經歷體驗。 3- 典型套路 (archetrope), archetype trope. Literally translated and the words picked to best suit the vibe the concept of archetrope gives me: the role, the title, the trope, the narrative space which one occupies, where one embodies and performs. 直譯典型archetype和套路trope兩字。我專門挑典型和套路來作翻譯是因為兩者合起來的感覺比較對得上archetrope這個自我認知概念： 一個身分定位，頭銜，套路，或自我所體現和展現的敘事空間的自我特點。 4- 心連 (hearted), heart connected In the abstract that is otherheartedness, it is the most basic connection, a relation towards a subject, that you feel you identify with. 在它心連感這樣的抽象概念中，這是一個對於一個主題的認同，一種最基層的連繫感。心的連結。 5- 原人類 (orthohuman), origin(ally) human Shortening originally into origin human, someone who has typical human experiences and identities, non-alterhuman. 從原來人類縮短成原人類。���一個擁有典型人類經歷和身分自我，並非人另經歷的個體。

Stanley Kwan 關錦鵬 is not only a famous director from Hong Kong, but also the first well-known openly gay figure in Hong Kong entertainment. He came out of the closet in 1996 (before Leslie Cheung, who did so in 1997), in the documentary he directed for the British Film Institute named Yang ± Yin: Gender in Chinese Cinema 男生女相：華語電影之性別. His works had garnered accolades for their in-depth portrayal of female characters, at the time when women in local movies often did little more than being pretty and screaming a lot.

(Under the cut: Director Kwan's own words on one of his most famous works and a gay film classic in Chinese-language cinema, Lan Yu (2001), in 2022 after BL culture has entered mainstream)

Most BL fans know Director Kwan via his gay-themed film Lan Yu 藍宇 (2001), about the eponymous Bejing university student falling in love with a wealthy, closeted businessman, Chen Handong. The film, based on a popular online novel Beijing Story 北京故事, has remained censored in mainland China for its queer content and its mentions of the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre. Its fate of being perennially censored was never a surprise—the film was shot in Beijing in secret, with the crew pretending to be shooting commercials around the capital. Digital filming also didn't exist then, and so the 100,000 ft + of film had to be smuggled out of China later to be developed.

Lan Yu was a project about love. Of love.

In 2022, Lan Yu celebrated its 20th anniversary with a 4K remastered version. Among the interviews of Director Kwan made for the celebration was one by The Initium 端傳媒, during which Kwan shared some of his views on Lan Yu, in the context of how public reception of queer media has changed over the years after the film's release.

These views may deviate from what some fans, especially those in BL circles, would expect. Precisely because of that, however, I'm posting them here. After all, maybe, hopefully, Kwan will collaborate with Dd (and Gg) one day. Maybe, fans like ourselves will interact with Kwan on social media spaces one day.

I hope Kwan's views will be kept in mind, considered and respected. Due to the length of the full interview **, I'm only translating the two parts that are relevant (lazy turtle here 😊):

《藍宇》 雖為華語電影同志片的經典，但過去廿年，關錦鵬卻在不少訪談中提過，電影改編自當年於大陸風行一時的網絡同志小說《北京故事》，而最初他其實並不喜歡那篇小說。

「原著基本上是用偷窺角度去看一段同志關係，特別是集中描寫男體的情色關係，有很多露骨的性愛場面。作者本身是知道這些描寫會令小說受歡迎。」關錦鵬接著說：「但在拍這部電影前，我在 1996 年已經出櫃。而我覺得作為一名同志導演，就更不應該去消費這個題材，所以當我看到原著小說將情色描寫，譬如肛交、口交的過程放大，當時我便跟製片人說，如果要原封不動將小說內容拍出來，我就不做了。」

Although Lan Yu is a classic Chinese-language gay film, in many interviews in the past 20 years, Kwan has mentioned that the film was adapted from the online gay novel Beijing Story, popular in mainland China at the time, and that he actually didn't like the novel at first. "The original novel basically looks at a gay relationship from a voyeuristic point of view, especially the erotic relationship between male bodies, and there are many explicit sex scenes. The author (of the novel) himself knows that these descriptions will make the novel popular."

Kwan continued, "But before making this movie, I had been out of the closet since 1996. And I thought, as a gay director, I shouldn't exploit this subject, so when I saw the original novel expanding, zooming in on the eroticism -- the processes of anal sex and oral sex, for example -- I told the producer at the time that if the novel's content is to be filmed without changes, I won't do it.”

2. 在《藍宇》面世的年代，電影確實意識大膽。但二十年後，當電影得以重新修復，社會氛圍其實亦有了翻天覆地的轉變。近年不但多了同志題材的作品，甚至大行其道，人人消費，成為一種時令的商業元素。譬如人氣男團會拍 BL 電視劇，而過去幾年的華語電影節，最快售罄的場次，都一定是同志電影。 此情此景，在《藍宇》剛上映的年代簡直不可思議，電影當年在香港的票房談不上亮眼，普羅大眾對同性戀故事有所抗拒，而本身就是同志的觀眾，想看卻不敢購票入場，怕被旁人標籤。二十年後世界變了樣，甚至總會看到「腐女」在 BL 電影的宣傳海報前打卡拍照。關錦鵬笑說：「是呀，前陣子的確有朋友跟我說，她其實是一名腐女。腐女族群喜歡看男同志電影，但到底喜歡看什麼呢？她某程度上都承認，想看的就是身體，是兩個好看的男人身體如何做愛。」 然而，這恰恰就是他當初對執導《藍宇》有所卻步的顧慮。當同志題材今日已走入主流，變成一種受歡迎的商業元素，關錦鵬則仍然有所警惕，跟潮流保持距離：「可能有些腐女都會喜歡《藍宇》，但我想未必完全是��們那杯茶。它真正要說的是兩個男人從色情買賣演變成一段感情關係，尤其是魏紹恩替我改編劇本之後，陳捍東這個角色，在我看來不一定是男同志，而是他在藍宇身上找到一些連自己都不知道的感覺。」 但關錦鵬也承認，從好的方向去看，在 BL 作品蔚然成風的助力之下，至少令同志以及 LGBT 性少數族群，相對容易被今日的大眾主流接受：「這是令人開心的。近幾年，特別是年輕人，確實會用比較開放的態度去對待 LGBT 族群。」稍頓，關錦鵬解釋道：「換個說法，關於 LGBT 議題的重點，現在就不再放在色情之上，而更多是感情關係，甚至是性少數族群認清自己身份之後，於生活上如何面對社會。那起碼是朝著一個正確的方向。」 In the era when Lan Yu was released, the film was indeed bold in its ideology. Twenty years later, however, at the time when the film gets its restoration, the social atmosphere has actually undergone earth-shaking changes. In recent years, not only have there been more gay-themed works, they have even become very popular and consumed by all, becoming a kind of fashionable commercial element. For example, popular boyband members are willing to make BL TV dramas, and in the past few years of Chinese-speaking film festivals, the fastest sold-out shows have all been gay movies.

[Pie note: The reporter was unlikely to be referring to Gg and Dd with their mention of "popular boyband members". Instead, they were probably thinking of Edan Lo and Anson Lo from Hong Kong's local boyband MIRROR, who starred in the BL drama Ossan's Love.]  

This phenomenon is unbelievable in the era when Lan Yu was first released. The box office of the film in Hong Kong couldn't be said to be impressive. The general public resisted gay stories [Pie note: Hong Kong hadn't decriminalised homosexual relationships until 1991, 10 years before], and the audience who were gay wanted to watch it but didn't dare to purchase tickets, for fear of being labeled by others. Twenty years later, the world has changed -- BL fans can be seen photographing themselves in front of the promotional posters of BL movies.

Kwan smiled and said, "Yes, a friend told me a while ago that she's actually a "rotten woman" (Pie note: = woman BL fan, translated from the Japanese term fujoshi). The "rotten women" group likes to watch gay movies, but what do they like to watch? She admitted, to a certain extent, that it's the body. It's the body, how two good-looking men's bodies make love."

And yet, this was precisely the concern that made Kwan hesitant to direct Lan Yu at the beginning. As gay themes enter the mainstream and become a popular commercial element, Kwan has remained vigilant, and has kept his distance from the trend: "Maybe some "rotten women" enjoy Lan Yu, but I don't think (the film) is entirely their cup of tea. What the film really wanted to express was how two men evolved from a transactional sex relationship to an emotional relationship, especially after Wei Shaoen adapted the script for me. The character of Chen Handong, in my opinion, didn't necessarily have to be a gay man; instead, he found on Lan Yu a feeling that even he himself couldn't understand.”

But Kwan also admitted that, from a better perspective, with the aid of popular BL works, it has become relatively easy for gays and LGBT sexual minorities to find acceptance in today's mainstream: "This is a happy thing to see. In recent years, especially young people have indeed treated the LGBT community with a more open attitude.” After a short pause, Kwan explained: “In other words, the focus of LGBT issues is now no longer on salacity, but more on emotional relationships, and even, on how sexual minorities face society in their daily lives after recognising their (sexual) identities. At least it's moving in the right direction.”
