Straight dude transmigrates into the body of a chinchilla omega, flees an arranged marriage with a military commander—a snake alpha—and unwittingly rescues the said commander during his escape in the belief that he is an injured omega
^ added Deep Sleep/Shen Mian 深眠 by 杨溯 Yang Su to my list of danmei recommendations
This author likes to make low-cost doodles to use as book covers. This is the one for Creature of Malignance/Xiong Sui, which is also in my rec list:
These two books are relatively recent so I don’t think there are English translations yet. There are fan translations for Yang Su’s other works, but they’re not in my rec list for now

Also I never thought I would appreciate weird unique horrifying creatures before but both of these books have them and they changed my mind!
Here's hoping this one is just as good as the latest one by Yang Su that I just read. Innovative and unpredictable plot! Nice character dynamic! Please!!

A Totally Subjective List of Favorite Danmei Novels I Read in 2023
Governor's Illness :: 督主有病 by 杨溯
The Return of Cambrian Period :: 寒武再临
The Plays of Lips and Teeth :: 唇齿之戏 by 张佩奇
After the Disabled God of War Became My Concubine :: 残疾战神嫁我为妾后 by 刘狗花
In Name Only :: 有名 by 木更木更
Placid Chang’an :: 太平长安 by 盐盐 Yany
Eternities Still Unsaid Till You Love Me :: 欲言难止 by 麦香鸡呢
"'Joyful Reunion' originally belonged to my people."
[action, political intrigue, coming of age] -- At its heart, Joyful Reunion is a young man's coming-of-age, as he grows up in a war-torn world and decides on the type of man and leader he wants to become. This novel isn't easy to read with it pacing and length, but its reputation as an iconic historical political danmei is well-deserved. There are no "good people" and "bad people", just humans trying to survive in a harsh world and live their own truths. The main romantic arc is fairly light, while the most controversial (i.e. beloved) "second male lead" in all of danmei is lurking in the background. But I love that Duan Ling finds someone who supports him through his worst days, and they give each other strength and hope to stay true to their best selves.
Governor's Illness :: 督主有病 by 杨溯
“去吧,”沈玦道,“你生,我去找你。你死,我去陪你。” “Go,” Shen Jue says, “If you live, I’ll come find you. If you die, I’ll go with you.”
[wuxia, secrets and conspiracies, revenge plot] -- The powerful Governor of the Eastern Depot has a massive bounty on the head of an infamous assassin. Who knew it's because they are childhood friends who want to find each other? Despite a tiny bit of palace intrigue, this is mostly a wuxia story, focusing on the complicated bonds between masters and disciples, and far too many blood debts and sect secrets. The first part of the novel is brutal. I love plot-heavy stories but I intentionally ignore parts of this one during re-reads because it is just so heartbreaking (unrelated to the romance arc). But Xiahou Lian never stops seeing the best in Shen Jue and Shen Jue never stops wanting the best for Xiahou Lian. And that strong bond gives them -- and readers like me -- some hope and comfort as secrets and enemies from the ghosts of Xiahou Lian's past continue to launch them into one action-packed challenge after another. (My review here)
The Return of Cambrian Period :: 寒武再临 by 水千丞
This is the apocalypse, and the grief of an individual is utterly insignificant compared to all the grief in the world right now.
[apocalypse, action/adventure, superpowers/mutations] -- I don't know how to summarize 1.7 million words briefly so here's a much lengthier review. It's an action-adventure with super-powered humans and mutant "monsters of the week". It's a mystery and heroic epic trying to solve and conquer the cause of the apocalypse. It's a social commentary sketching out what humanity keeps and saves and becomes when modern society crumbles. It's a love story -- many love stories, romantic and familial and platonic and more-- that reminds you what gives humans the courage, purpose, and determination to stand up in face of overwhelming adversity is love for and from the people we keep in our hearts.
The Plays of Lips and Teeth :: 唇齿之戏 by 张佩奇
Zhou Chenyu returns to the center stage, and says, "I have performed 'Wu Long Yuan' many times with He Chenfeng, but this is my first time playing Yan Xijiao." He turns to Yan Zhao, who is standing beside him, "I'm giving you my first time, you need to take responsibility." Yan Zhao: "..."
[ celebrities, comedy, traditional arts] -- This is a novel for when you want stories about celebrities, with all the fun of "CP fans" and Weibo drama, but also a break from actors and idols. A TV host and a Xiangsheng actor meet in a reality show that teaches them about each other's careers. While they are expected to provide some fan service to boost ratings, they also develop genuine respect and fondness for each other. With a comedian as a main character, this novel kept me laughing with xiangsheng performances and the main couple's funny antics. There is a bit of angst when the main characters struggle with their careers and their relationships with their respective families, but luckily, they find each other and a path forward together.
But that "child", he is so innocent and cruel.
[mystery/procedural, romance, firefighters] -- A departure from the norm in the 188 Boys Club, this novel is a plot-heavy slow-burn romance, following the work of fire captain Ren Yi and police officer Gong Yingxian. I got really drawn into the "cases" (fires) that Ren Yi deals with, and learned so much about fire trucks, rescue protocols, and fire risks of various materials. Gong Yingxian is a traumatized genius orphan with a large inheritance, weird hobbies, and no social skills. He repeatedly hurts Ren Yi's feelings and betrays his trust, for reasons ranging from uninformed callousness to intentional manipulation, but technically none of that is about their romantic relationship. I don't want to downplay the seriousness of his actions, but there is something precious about the guy who confesses his feelings with the bones of his dead pet lizard, and gets frustrated because Ren Yi can't decipher the romantic symbolism of the lizard's heart-shaped tail bone.
After the Disabled God of War Became My Concubine :: 残疾战神嫁我为妾后 by 刘狗花
“瞧好了,他,靖王,我是他的妾,他是我夫君。” "Look carefully! Him, the Prince Jin, I am his secondary concubine, he is my lord husband."
[transmigration, romance, political intrigue] -- History professor Jiang Suizhou fails a student paper for using unofficial records, and ends up transmigrating into the wild events chronicled in the paper. Like any decent protagonist of a transmigration novel, Suizhou saves himself from a gruesome fate, falls in love with the coolest person in their universe, and change the world for the better. Despite the setting, the political plot is kept light and simple. A great treat for when you want sugar-pie feel-good comfort read with a tiny bit of plot.
If given the option, who wouldn't want dignity? To love with dignity, and be loved with dignity.
[scum gong crematorium, reconciliation, mental illness] -- My favorite HE crematorium novel! Xu Yan dumps emotionally abusive boyfriend Shen Zhi whom he has loved and tolerated for years, and starts a new life and career with supportive friends and family. This is finally a sane universe where no one retcons or minimizes or excuses Shen Zhi's actions, even if there were genuine misunderstandings and he genuinely loved Xu Yan. During the crematorium phase, Shen Zhi respects Xu Yan's boundaries and refusals (though he does repeatedly return to ask again). It takes time, but he works hard to grow as a person, to think and behave differently, and eventually lets Xu Yan go out of love and respect. When Xu Yan initiates the reconciliation, it feels like they have a chance this time because they have both changed and grown in meaningful ways.
In Name Only :: 有名 by 木更木更
“当他落在了我这儿,我这儿就是春天。” "When he lands where I am, where I am becomes spring time. "
[actors/celebrities, fake relationship, mature characters] -- Two award-winning actors fake a relationship to quash a scandalous rumor. They gradually get to know the real person behind the other's accomplished career and polished public persona, and fall in love. The tone of the story veers is mostly sweet and funny, with a splash of angst that they conquer with their own strength and each other's support. It's so comforting and relaxing to read about the love story of "mature men" in their early 30s who know how to communicate productively, take care of the people they like, and really accept and empathize with each other's imperfections. (I wrote about the novel here.)
Placid Chang’an :: 太平长安 by 盐盐 Yany
“你既然选择了大理寺,查找真相、还原真相就是你的事,而我身为摄政亲王,稳定朝局,制衡天下是我的事。你做你该做的,剩下的我来处理。” “Since you have chosen to join the Court of Judicial Review, investigating and uncovering the truth is now your duty; I am the Prince Regent, so stabilizing the court and governing the nation is my duty. Do your duty, and I will handle the rest.”
[mystery/procedural, court politics] -- The newest Zhuangyuan Su Cen has a sharp mind and keen eye for solving mysterious. As a high-profile rookie official, he is soon swept into the factional rivalries at court -- and the Prince Regent's bed at night. The plot is mainly driven by a series of cases Su Cen investigates for his work and at the behest of people around him, and many mysteries point back to a few old cold cases and a secret organization. The grand finale feels a bit underwhelming compared to the set up, and the side characters are somewhat flat, but the individual cases and the main couple are engaging. The relationship arc is a sweet but measured exploration into the charms and woes of a relationship with large gaps in power and age (40-ish vs early 20s). They are both capable but not overpowered, leaving the story with believable suspense throughout.
Eternities Still Unsaid Till You Love Me :: 欲言难止 by 麦香鸡呢
Actually, he knows it shouldn't be called "waiting." Xu Ze is like a kite with no one holding the string. The kite wobbles as it flies high in the sky, but it still tries so hard to stay in place, not waiting for anyone to pick up that string, but just hoping to see that certain someone on more time.
[ABO, Alpha/Alpha, (temporarily) unrequited pining, amnesia] -- Scholarship kid Xu Ze has harbored a secret crush on Golden Boy and fellow Alpha Lu Heyang for years. They eventually begin a secret relationship in high school, but it ends after Lu Heyang gets amnesia, and they don't meet again until years later. The pining in this story is absolutely suffocating. Xu Ze has always prepared for his feelings to remain unrequited, and Lu Heyang is far from forthcoming and reassuring about his own feelings and commitment during their high school relationship. After adult Lu Heyang risks everything to recover his memory of their relationship, it's devastating to see Xu Ze break down in Lu Heyang's arms, finally coming to terms with how desparately he has wanted and waited for this reunion, and finally getting his Lu Heyang back. Reading a book that’s still in the process of being written, because I can’t find completed danmei books that fit my taste, sadly.
This book seems good. Supernatural horror, a genre I like. Scarier than most horror danmei (most are really weak), but not very scary to me. Still, the flavour is strong enough.
There is something deeply wrong with the love interest, Jin Feize. Enchanting, batshit in a smiley way, and psychopathic (by this I mean that empathy is often beyond his reach; there’s a reason for this). I like that. He has casually said several times that he wants to kill the protagonist, turn the protagonist’s head into a taxidermied specimen, and put it by his bedside. He has also suggested once that the protagonist kill him and turn his head into a specimen instead.
Also, he started out as the protagonist’s online girlfriend.

Novels I read for the audiodrama cover art
judge a book by the cover of its adaptation ~
钟情 by 静水边 on Mao'er FM -- We have dragons, capes, and swords, in space! Are they real or symbolic? What genre is this actually? I never read a space-themed danmei or any original guide/sentinel stories, so this picture totally hooked me for the novelty.
心眼 by 北南 on Manbo-- This cover art actually sketches out a story instead of "just vibes". Why is this guy leaving? Why did the other person take until the train station to try to stop him? Are the big red headphones over the ears important symbolism to contrast or complement the "eyes" in the title?
我成了虐文女主她亲哥/I Became the Older Brother of the Heroine in an Abusive Novel by 刘狗花 on Mao'er FM -- You can just tell the boy in white is Best Boy™ who deserves ALL the cookies and encouraging pats on the head. The boy in blue is obviously trying to be cool and ready to bite the head off anyone who is mean to Best Boy™, so he also deserves cookies and a pat on the head.
督主有病/Governor’s Illness by 杨溯 on Mao'er FM -- Bare branches, autumn leaves, and dramatic winds. Based on my years of watching c-drama, two people looking at each other like this under a pavilion are almost certainly headed for a dramatic and/or tragic confrontation. This picture is promising beautiful, poetic angst.
君有疾否/Jun You Ji Fou by 如似我闻– on Mao'er FM -- That gremlin's little smile and adoring expression while he plays with his partner's hair! The intimacy implied by the the bare forearm, loose hair, and untied cloak! The reservation and uncertainty in one partner's expression, contrasted with their physical closeness! This relationship is going to be so much to unpack!

Still thinking about this guy. He’s Princess Rapunzel but mad.
(^ the cover of the book he’s from)
👾 Started out as the unknowing male protagonist’s spoiled online girlfriend. Protagonist was a recent high school graduate.
👜 Fleeced the protagonist, making him buy “her” clothes and jewellery with money from his part-time jobs. “She” was the only person who remembered his birthday and gifted him fireworks when he was in need of support, so the protagonist was aware he was being fleeced but willing to fall into “her” clutches.
😘 Sent the protagonist a photo of “her” legs in black silk stockings “she” bought with the money the protagonist sent “her”. (Artistically ripped the stockings to up the level of sultriness.)
💯 Turned out to be the popular top student who sat next to the protagonist at school
🪚 Too casually dismembered a reanimated corpse during the protagonist’s first encounter with the supernatural, making the protagonist suspect him of being a serial killer
😈 Gradually revealed inhuman strength and severe mental illness ranging from inability to feel empathy (does not—cannot—care about anyone), to trigger-happy tendencies
🍆 Forcefully remained the protagonist’s boyfriend by threatening to send everyone a compromising video of the protagonist. Protagonist was pissed but very grudgingly remained mesmerised (didn’t delete the silk stocking photo)
👸Turned out to be a supernatural entity who used to be locked up in a tower, where his favourite pastime was charming people (including men) who entered the vicinity, making them commit dangerous acts in besotted attempts to rescue him. He was released from his prison by the protagonist’s mysterious mother and bidden to watch over her son in her absence, unbeknownst to the protagonist.
🔪 Still, he casually said several times that he wanted to kill the protagonist, turn the protagonist’s head into a taxidermied specimen, and put it by his bedside. Suggested once that the protagonist kill him and turn his head into a specimen instead.
🍵 His constant smile, way of talking a little cute, and way of pulling off “green tea” moves on bystanders to get his way with the protagonist makes his terrible behaviour come off as interesting to the reader rather than terrible. (Green tea is Chinese slang for presenting oneself as pure and innocent to con others into liking you or feeling sympathy for you.) In fact, he’s responsible for a lot of the humour in the book.
⚡️ Had to be collared with an electric collar by the protagonist to be forced into submission. At one point he excitedly offered to buy the protagonist a whip to match.
🎏 Turned out to have once been the boy equivalent of a shrine maiden—think masked dance in ghost-busting purification rites, playing the role of the Nuo god prince. As a child, he had saved the protagonist from a netherworldly troop during a festival procession.
🫁 At age ten, he was trapped with his mentally ill mother in a ghostly realm, where his mother mutated into a monstrous form and forced him to play a never-ending game: find—and then eat—the organs she dug from her body and hid around the hospital.
📞 Managed to make one phone call that was picked up by his cheating father’s mistress, who pretended it was a spam call, dooming him and his mother to a hellish eternity cut off from humanity.
Eventually received one chance to escape; instead, he chose to try to save his mother with the ritual dance of the Nuo god prince, causing her to stab him in her anguish.
🤍 Last words: “I don’t want to be sad anymore.”
👹 Received an injection containing the flesh of a god and was “lucky” to be compatible enough to not go completely mad, turning him into a supernatural creature just a little less monstrous than his mother.
🫴 Was discovered at home after his long disappearance, clutching his mother’s torn-off hand
⚪️ As a result of his trauma and semi-integration with a malevolent god’s flesh, he got his wish. He wasn’t sad anymore, because he felt nothing. No more compassion, so no more pain. Just smiling madness. Hence his psychopathic personality today.
❓ Was dissected, starved, electrocuted, etc by the authorities to figure out his capabilities prior to being imprisoned
💉 Discovered (from the protagonist) that his doctor mother had medically induced insanity in herself so that she would not be killed and could live long enough to give birth to him, even though it meant that she would be torturously experimented on later. So it turned out that he and his mother were always fighting to protect each other.
💬 When the protagonist killed his mother with his help, releasing her from the ghostly realm in which she had been trapped, he was able to talk to her sane self for the first and last time in their lives.
Doubled over in pain and confusion, he said to the protagonist, “My heart is so empty, help me fill it. I hate this sensation, hurry up and help me.”
“Jin Feize, I can’t help you.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re experiencing sadness.”
⚫️ Attempted to shoot his cruel father after his mother’s death, but was thwarted by the protagonist who, worried that the authorities would use the murder as a pretext to euthanise him, threw himself in front of the man as a human shield.
Was terrified that he had killed the protagonist but what he said was: “Xiao Ye, why haven’t you died? I kept waiting for the news of your death. I’d decided, once you died, I’d die with you.”
“I hate you, I don’t like you. If not for you, I wouldn’t have remembered this suffering. I’m having nightmares again, I dreamed I was eaten by maggots, my whole body had rotted away. You’re not allowed to go anywhere, stay here with me. If I rot, you must rot with me.”
💔 Rediscovered a few emotions, including heartache:
Jin Feize eyed him for a while, then smiled suddenly. “Fine, as long as you don’t cry. When you cry, I want to kill people, and don’t even feel like eating hawberry cakes anymore.” He tilted his head, expression somewhat confused. “Have I fallen ill? Recently I keep feeling a discomfort in my chest. So you’d better not cry anymore, I seem to hate it when people cry, what if I can’t control myself and kill you?”
“You want to kill me?” Jiang Ye furrowed his brow.
“No,” Jin Feize replied very honestly, “I want to kiss you. Xiao Ye, let’s kiss.”
…he said, in a context where kissing would have been very inappropriate (his boyfriend couldn’t remember his own identity).
🔫 Blasted his own head to bits without hesitation (the head of a manifestation of himself who travelled through time)
💳 Many twists and turns later, they lived happily ever after, with him maxing out the protagonist’s credit cards (ah, he works so hard to earn money, my heart aches for him so much, oops my hand slipped and bought another luxury scarf, it’s okay he’ll forgive me anyway)

favorite quotes: Governor’s Illness/督主有病 by 杨溯
“十七,人这条命留着不是为了吃喝拉撒的。总会有一个人,能让你豁出命去保护,就算她死了,你也要豁出命去报仇。” "Shiqi, people don't stay alive just to eat and shit. There will always be someone who you will want to protect with your life. Even if she dies, you will want to lay down your life for vengeance."
Chapter 45, Xiahou Lian
“信过一段时日,开过光,也求过签,也请过长生牌位。庙里那些杂七杂八的名目,挨个做了个遍。可是有什么用呢,上天听不见你的祈求,神佛也看不到你的磕头,求不得的,依旧求不得。” "I believed for a while; I got blessings, begged for fortunes, and set up longevity tablets. All those rituals in the temples, I did them all. But what's the use, the heavens can't hear your prayers, and deities can't see your bows. What you can't have, you still can't have."
Chapter 57, Shen Jue
“我身无长物,只有这一条命还值点银子。我把它送给你,你要吗?” "I have nothing, only this life is worth a few silvers. I want to gift it to you, do you want it?"
Chapter 66, Xiahou Lian
“佛爷,求你,罪是我的,报应是我的,罚我,不要罚他。” "Buddha, I beg of you, the sins are mine, the karma is mine, punish me, do not punish him."
Chapter 115 , Shen Jue
Xiahou Lian opens the ceramic jar, and Xiahou Pei's remaining ashes comes into sight. These are the last traces Xiahou Pei has left in the world. He remembers that woman who has already left him eight years ago, her glistening lips, sharp brows, like a sabre, tip pointing forward, seemingly capable of shattering all. Tears silently slide down his cheek, falling into the jar of ashes. That bit of ash immediately darkens, like an aged scar.
Chapter 118
Xialou Pei had always been like that, as if all the difficulties and dangers in the world can be reduced to mud with Hengbo. He only learned later that she wasn't truly invincible. She just had a great heart, and as long as her heart can bear all the difficulties in the world, her saber can cut through all its limitations. He is Xiahou Pei's son; he needs to have her kind of courage.
Chapter 118
“看见你了,少爷。你是我的极乐。” "I saw you, shaoye. You are my Nirvana."
Chapter 124, Xiahou Lian
“我觉得够了。虽然风风雨雨这么走过来,可光咱们俩相遇这一点,就足够我甜一辈子。” "I think it's enough. All though it's been a stormy road getting here, just the two of us meeting is enough sweetness to last me a lifetime"
Chapter 124, Xiahou Lian
“你怎么就不明白呢?你和我们不一样啊,我们这些人,死了就死了,埋骨荒野也没什么。可你不同,你就算死也要躺进金漆玉裹的大棺材,吃供奉受祭拜,热热闹闹的,怎么能和我们一样,死在名之地,做无名之鬼?” "Why can't you understand? You are not like us! People like us, dying is just dying. It doesn't matter if our remains get lost in the wild. But you are different, even if you die you are going to be lying in a gilded grand coffin, receiving offerings and prayers, like it's a bustling affair. How can you be like us, dying in nameless places to become nameless ghosts?"
Chapter 132, Xiahou Lian
“去吧,”沈玦道,“你生,我去找你。你死,我去陪你。” "Go," Shen Jue says, "If you live, I'll come find you. If you die, I'll go with you."
Chapter 132

2023 "To Read" List [updating]
This is less of a "to read" list that I'm try to work through and more of a compilation of recommendations that I find interesting. Definitely something that would likely be longer rather shorter by end of the year.
My current plan is to add and rearrange new titles as needed, but new additions will be annotated [NEW]. If I finish a title in 2023 , I can cross it off (yay dopamine!) and keep it on the list, because recording that once in my reading log list just isn't enough.
Titles in each category are roughly arranged for "priority," like, very roughly.
Historical & Wuxia
Probably my favorite genre, dating back to my childhood watching period dramas growing up in China. Sometimes I want to wrack my brains figuring out all the details in intricate political plots. Sometimes I want to escape to a fantastical adventures with swords and long-flowing robes. I love everything here.
杀破狼 priest -- Sha Po Lang -- Part of me is like trying to "save" this fic for when I feel like I invest sufficient attention and emotion in it, since it's like one of the most recommended titles in my favorite genre.
Peerless
To Rule in a Turbulent World -- [finished about 2/5 and paused]
A Sword of Frost -- this title is one of the first overwhelming recommendations I got when I started reading danmei, but somehow I still haven't read anything by this author
Everywhere in Jianghu is Wonderful
Governor’s Illness
The Emperor's Stratagem
Shan You Mu Xi -- Can't help but be curious after Joyful Reunion
Yingnu
Twin Jades of Jiangdong
The Blood Crown
Xianxia & Historical Fantasy
I think of Xianxia as my "home" in danmei, since I started in the genre with mxtx books, but since you need to keep track of the fantasy world building components as well as the historical ones, most of these are not easy reads you can sneak in for a quick break during busy days.
I have been told this is not a bad way to get a sense of Meatbun's style without committing to the monstrosity (wordcount-wise) that is 2Ha
Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know -- [1/10 progress, paused]
Tianbao Fuyao Lu
Dinghai Fusheng Records
Actors/Celebrities
I find this genre very easy to read because they share many of the same world-building elements, and I enjoy themes of balancing public vs private identities, which all of us do to some extent in our daily lives.
Modern (General)
Includes genres like mystery, E-sports, romance, etc. I may have the highest expectation of this genres because it's too easy for it to feel "not real enough"
AWM[绝地求生] 漫漫何其多-- AWM[PUBG] -- [In progress 1/10] The most recommended E-sports novel, to the extent I feel bad I didn't start with this one.
Blazing Armor
In progress 3/5] "Mature men in love," fans say.
Priest
附加遗产 水千丞 -- supposedly one of the best 188 novels in terms of quality,
犯罪心理 长洱 -- fun fact: I found out that for a long time before 2017, this was by far the most popular danmei on JJWXC, and it's still one of the Big Three Mystery Novels along with Modu and Poyun.
I'm fascinated by what appears to be the only well-know story (or just the only one left?) that focuses on elite Chinese politics, which of course, has gotten a lot less fun and safe and speculate about since then.
Priest
荣光[电竞] 龙柒 -- wait this has one million + words?
Urban Fantasy, Infinity Flow & Quick Transmigration
The "Modern but with magic" or "Modern but multiple stories in one story" genre.
Priest
Science Fiction
"More in the future than Modern" or "Apocalypse".
Priest
High School & Campus Romance
This is the genre I'm least likely to read, but since these titles come up in so many recommendations ....
Non-Danmei
I'm unsure if this should be thought of as danmei or a "serious" novel, but I've been told to brace for tears
Notes/Remarks
Science Fiction is the only genre on my list (in the beginning) that includes the original "Big Four of JJWXC": Feitian Yexiang, Shui Qian Cheng, Priest, Huai Shang, unless I also merge the two historical genres.
