a visit to my old friends beneath the clear moon, the flower flame and our faces reflected red. at dawn spring breaks to the young phoenix’s croon, days of peace through the lands far and wide spread. without a drink the youth buries the wine, returning to meet his brother after years long fled. unnecessary in life are meetings so often and soon, when the east wind can carry our mutual yearning instead.

Link Click Musical Masterlist 🔍🌟
Time Agents Musical' main tag, pictures tab - shows majority of stage pictures in chronological order, updates from official Encore Musicals show up here too.
Tips: 1) Visit the OP's profiles! They usually post more than the one photo you can see in a thumbnail. And it's easier to browse & save pics through the profile.
2) Even though you can scroll the pics tab indefinitely, without a weibo account you won't be able to easily access older posts, as they'll get buried under the user's newer posts (there's a roundabout way mentioned in my guide). So I recommend to visit this tag frequently, if you wanna be sure nothing is hidden away 🔍 Daily or once in a 2-3 days will be enough imo, it's not very crowded tag ^^
Tumblr media
3) ⬆You can also check videos in this tag, the orange tab has 10 most recent clips from the musical (other one has the most popular ones).
Musicals (Encore Musicals) <- official profile of a theatre that runs LC stage, they post the cast schedules, photos/behind the scenes clips, whenever new actor debuts, there's a special guests or a cast member has a birthday. They also report when an actor goes on a health break. Tip: all LC actors can be found in the pinned post (you'd need OCR 'image-text' tool to copy their names from pics though)
Encore Musicals Bilibili account <- theatre's official profile on a major cn video-sharing platform (more bts clips)
动画师lan <- bonus link to studio LAN profile, that's where they post the mysterious animation frames~
校医来啦 <- profile of a chief producer of LC Musical, Chen Xiaoyi
兮兮兮辞_ <- profile of an executive producer of LC musical
Metablue赛博蓝 <- bilibili of a music producer, she did videos about working on LC musical songs

A few actors for supporting cast don't have a tag bc they seem to be newbie actors and/or have very small online presence
Tips: 1) Without a weibo account you can scroll through the actor's tag only up to abt 45 most recent posts. The actors perform in multiple plays (duh) so non-LC photos will show up too.
2) Imo the most optimal method, so the limits won't stop you is: go to the main 'LC musical' tag and see what's new. Check schedule for the cast lineup in a recent performance. Go to the actors' tags to see what's new.
3) Sometimes there are 2 performances on a same day, with different actors. So don't be surprised if you find mixed lineups under one date.
4) Mostly QL and Lin Zhen's actresses post behind the scenes photos on their personal profiles. Don't bother looking up the guys accounts, unless it's a holiday or their b-day >< From what I remember, only Wu Yihan posts abt his cat. Zhang Jiahao and Zhou Bobo post selfies sometimes. Ji Xiaokun posts his own photography (he's good!).
5) Google translate, however broken, is enough to translate the captions, so use it for context✨Ppl sometimes give their reviews titled 'repos' from the stage they've seen 🙏
6) You'll find more musical related clips under the actor's tag, than in 'LC musical' main tag. It's usually in an actor's fancam, but not always. Useful when you like an actor or there was a particular moment you want to see from a different angle🌟👌
7) The clips tab (one in the middle) under the actor's tag has no time limited access. You can browse and watch the videos without issues!
Tumblr media
______________________________________________________
I'll try to add missing tags when the actors debut 💪 And if you find any mistakes or a broken links, please let me know 🙏 For those who read it all, here's a present ;>
光时 <- bonus Shiguang ship tag, they're just like us fr (but way more horny on main), there's lots of art, from cute fluff to nsfw djs >>
OKAY that's all I have🎉

The Five Songs of Mourning (complete)
And a little analysis.
In the morning mirror with the residual makeup of self-love, the hairpin is covered with green silk.
In a moment, the rising sun shone on the blush-painted cheeks, a red rose is about to awaken.
The mountain springs flow freely around the steps, and thousands of peach trees and blossoms reflect on the small building.
Reading Taoism leisurely and not getting up yet, watching her comb her hair under the bead curtain.
The red color is pressed by the new season, and the flower threads are soft and the dust is auspicious.
First of all, don't think that the material and soil are weak, a little sloppy is the most pleasant.
All water is forgettable when you’ve seen the vast blue sea, no clouds so wondrous as those at Mt. Wushan.
Idly, I pass by some flowers without looking back, partly to study Tao, partly to think of you.
There are usually hundreds of kinds of flowers in bloom, but the pear blossoms and white flowers are especially picked.
Today there are two or three trees at the head of the river, sadly spending the last spring with their leaves.
[Zì'ài cán zhuāng xiǎo jìng zhōng, huán chāi màn cǎn lǜ sī cóng.] [Xūyú rìshè yānzhī jiá, yī duǒ hóng sū xuán yù róng.] [Shānquán sànmàn rào jiē liú, wàn shù táohuā yìng xiǎo lóu.] [Xián dú dào shū yōng wèi qǐ, shuǐjīng lián xià kàn shūtóu.] [Hóng luōzhe yā zhú shí xīn, jíliǎo huā shā nèn qū chén.] [Dì yī mò xián cái de ruò, xiē xiē pī màn zuì yírén.] [Céngjīngcānghǎi nàn wéi shuǐ, chúquè wūshān bùshì yún.] [Qǔcì huācóng lǎn huígù, bàn yuán xiūdào bàn yuán jūn.] [Xúncháng bǎi zhònghuā qí fā, piān zhāi líhuā yǔ báirén.] [Jīnrì jiāng tóu liǎng sān shù, kělián hé yè dù cán chūn.]
Yuan Zhen describes the beauty and shy vanity of a woman who woke up in the early hours of the day. His writing is thoughtful, as if it were a moment he had just experienced, on the morning of the day he wrote the poem.
The landscape is described from far to near, and one can imagine that the colors start out dark and gradually become clear and vivid. Yuan Zhen reads a Taoist work, but neither this nor anything around him stops him from watching his wife getting ready for a new day.
As mentioned earlier, here, the fourth part tells of the poet's devoted love for his wife. Nothing will ever be as splendid as his beloved is to him. Yuan Zhen was intoxicated by the rough sea and beautiful clouds of Wushan, whose beauty was unprecedented.
With the last part, we can conclude that throughout the poem there are dark details amidst the beauty, the apathy of someone who doesn't seem to see anything special anywhere. The land is neglected, the trees are withering. It was the end of spring and a widower was mourning.

I just wanted to translate a lil' bit of this book I was reading, because I didn't realise just how many poems (in the case of this book, Tang dynasty poems) have been lost to the ravages of time, and what a miracle it is that we even have a 唐诗三百首 today. Short note from me about translation approach is at the end under the cut.
ISBN: 978-7-5302-2250-8
The Cambrian Age of Tang Poems by Author Wang Xiaolei (ISBN: 978-7-5302-2250-8)
Chapter 1
Do you know how fortunate you are to be able to read Tang poems today?
My ambition is as grand as when Confucius compiled The Book of Poems, so that the radiance of my poems may shine a thousand springs from now.
At a time 400 years ago from the present day, during the Tianqi Era (1621-1628) of the Ming Dynasty, when Eunuch Wei Zhongxian’s (魏忠贤)authority could eclipse the heavens-
In the Haiyan district of the Zhejiang Province, there was an old man who silently shed his official’s robes, and folded them neatly. This was a set of blue robes embroidered with white pheasants, signifying that he was a fifth-rank court official.
Outside, someone yelled, “Official Hu, why haven’t you come out yet! We’re waiting to escort you to De Zhou so you can take up your post there!”
“Take up my post?” The old gentleman gave a small smile, then muttered to himself, “Goodbye,  court politics! I have long grown weary of you. I’m going back to my hometown, and spending the rest of my years completing a very important matter- to compile the most complete set of Tang poems, so that there will no longer be any left out, so that no longer will there be any lost to the ages, so that our descendents can read them all!”
Let us remember the name of this old gentleman: Hu Zhenheng (胡震亨).
Perhaps it is very difficult for people of the present day to understand - wasn’t he just wanting to make a compilation of poems, was that really so difficult? Did he need to really go this hard? Actually, yes. Back in that time period, it really was that difficult.  During that time, there were no publishing companies, printing factories, libraries, or convenient search engines. If you wanted to look up a poem, you’d have to pore through countless scrolls, you may even need to  trek over mountains and cross rivers just to be able to make a copy - and even after all that, you may not even have been able to make that copy.
If Ol’ Hu slacked off, and didn’t make this Tang poetry compilation, what would have happened? The answer to that is, that the consequences would have been very dire.
At that time, Tang poetry was already starting to go extinct just like how our flora and fauna species are going into mass extinction today. According to Hu Zhenheng’s estimations, at least half of all Tang poetry had already been lost.
Perhaps you are thinking, how the hell does poetry just go missing? As long as the poet is good enough, as long as the poem is good enough, then wouldn’t such works just be passed down through the ages, and be able to endure, that way?
It really doesn’t work like that.
Let me ask you a very broad question: out of all of the Tang poems, which one is the best? Perhaps many people will respond, off the top of their heads, “A night of moonlit blossoms on the river in spring” (春江花月夜“). This poem is lauded as the “a singular page eclipses the entire Tang dynasty” poem of poems, after all. Well then, who is the author of this fine poem? Many of you readers can answer, Zhang Ruoxu(张若虚).
This Mister Zhang has written such a great work, and has made such a great contribution to Tang Poetry. Well then, how many of his poems remain today? A hundred poems? Eighty? The answer will shock you - merely two of his poems remain today.
The only reason “A night of moonlit blossoms on the river in spring” was able to be passed down to the present day, is really nothing more than a giant fluke. It was thanks to a very accidental opportunity, that when people in the Song dynasty were compiling a book of songs and ballads for their music bureau, they recorded this very poem by Zhang Ruoxu into the compilation, and enabled it to be passed down through the ages.
Apart from two poems, all the other works created by Zhang Ruoxu in his lifetime, do not exist today.
Now let me ask you another similar question: out of the pentasyllabic quatrain poems (五言绝句)in the Tang dynasty , which one is the best? Many will immediately respond, “Climbing White Stork Tower” (登鹳雀楼). Yes, the one which everyone recited as a child - the sun sets against the mountains, the yellow river flows into the sea” (白日依山尽,黄河入海流). Its author is recognised by most people as Wang Zhihuan (王之涣).
So then, how many poems has the great poet Wang Zhihuan left behind? The answer will again flabbergast you as you read it: there are only six poems left behind, the rest are all gone.
Within a thousand years, we do not know how many lines like “the sun sets against the mountains (白日依山尽)”, and “the tides of the ocean and the moon rise in tandem (海上明月共潮生)” have been lost to the ages forever.
The misfortunes of our friends Wang Zhihuan and Zhang Ruoxu, were not mere happenstance.
How many poems of Li Bai (李白)have lived on to see the light of today? The most pessimistic takes say that, about one-tenth of all his poems exist today.
This great genius has been writing poetry all his life, so estimates of his total poem count sits at around five thousand to ten thousand poems. For every ten of his poems, we may never ever be able to read eight or nine of them.
Before passing away, Li Bai had sorted out all of the drafts and writings he had made in his lifetime, and solemnly entrusted it all to his uncle (族叔), Li Yangbing (李阳冰), and asked that he compile them into volumes, so that it can be passed down through generations. Li Yangbing did not fail Li Bai’s wishes, and poured his heart into compiling the Thatched Cottage Anthologies (草堂集)of which there were ten scrolls … which then subsequently got lost to the ages in the Song Dynasty.
Now let’s talk about Du Fu (杜甫)。Essentially all the poems written by this similarly great poet before the age of forty, have been lost to the ages. How long did Du Fu live? Until age fifty-eight. That is to say, that all the poems he wrote for most of his life, were all for nothing.
Another big shot, Wang Wei, (王维)fared no better. During the Kaiyuan era alone (713-741) he wrote hundreds if not thousands of poems. By the end, less than one-tenth of the total remained.
There are countless other examples. The early Tang poet, Song Zhiwen(宋之问)was big-name poet who established the foundations of regulated verse poetry. He had poetry volumes circulating during the Tang Dynasty, however the circulation still ended during the Jiajing era of the Ming dynasty, and was finally lost during the Wanli era. All twenty volumes of the writings of gifted female scholar-official, Shangguan Wan’er (上官婉儿), were entirely lost in the Song dynasty, and we only have thirty-two of her poems remaining today.
The poetry volumes written by one of the “Elite Fours” of the early Tang dynasty, Wang Bo (王勃),the genius who famously wrote “the hues of twilight fall in line with the solitary flight of a wild mallard (落霞与孤鹜齐飞)”, were arduously able to survive for a few hundred years, however, come the Ming dynasty, they were all completely lost all the same.
This is like saying that the complete works of Jing Yong (金庸)were all lost to the ages, and you would only be able to glean snippets and excerpts of his original writings from the column writings of Liushen Leilei (六神磊磊)to get your hit. Just the thought of it makes me want to cry.
The great Meng Haoran (孟浩然) can be counted as lucky. Shortly after he passed away, there were already people making compilations of his poems. Even so, many of his creations have still been lost. There is also the great Li Shangyin (李商隐), who wrote “the silkworm spins silk even ‘til death (春蚕到死丝方尽)” and “our hearts are connected through a singular nexus (心有灵犀一点通)” , who personally compiled forty-odd scrolls of his writings, however, those have all been lost, and not a single volume remains. His poems have all been scrabbled together piece-by-piece, by those after his time.
So, do you still think that those poems which have been lost to time, were lost purely because they were shoddy poems, of little worth, so no one wanted to remember them? Not at all. Even if they made a mark in their heyday, poems that are handed down will eventually be lost to time, all the same.
People in the Tang dynasty have recorded, that of Li Bai’s CiFu (辞赋)poetry, the poems Dapeng Fu (大鹏赋)and Hongyou Fu (鸿猷赋)were incredibly marvelous, so much so that they even surpassed the calibre of writings of the big guardians of CiFu poetry from the previous generation, Sima Xiangru (司马相如) and Yang Xiong (杨雄). Fortunately, we can read Dapeng Fu today, but … where is Hongyou Fu? Sorry, it’s gone, lost forever to the ravages of time.
Translator’s note:
There are many ways to do a translation, and this one is more for the vibes than for the “literal” translation - that is not to say it is inaccurate, but as someone who has translated for years from Japanese to English, or from time to time, Chinese to English (when I feel like it lol) I thought I’d state the purpose of this translation so you can get a sense of my choices here.  I am translating this very casually and more for speed / for fun, it is a very pulling-words-off-the-top-of-my-head translation than the other kind of translation I do where I sit there for hours milling over a singular word. A partial reason for why I can do this style of translation is because the prose of the book itself is very conversational and casual (I will tangentially note, this writing style is kind of controversial with the Author’s other works that discuss poetry, as some readers view it as “low-brow”, but for me, I like it. I think it makes the content very digestible and accessible to readers who are new to poetry). This translation is for my buddies in the poetry club, who are mainly diaspora and/or can read Chinese to any extent anyway (in particular, I want to thank the funny and great @fwoopersongs, for always being here to chat poem stuff and making me interested in the lives of the poets and the context surrounding the poetry rather than just the poems themselves).  As such, I will try to remember to include the Chinese characters for people’s names, so you can read it with the correct tones. I bought this book and started reading, and thought wow, this is cool, I want to share it. A lot of the Chinese terms here I’ve only thought about and experienced in Chinese, I don’t watch Mandarin-language shows with any subtitles, and I don’t typically experience other Chinese Media in English so I am not sure what the “standard” (if any) terms in English would be - it’s for the vibes, especially the parts where I am translating literal poetry. For example, the author pulls verses from poetry here to set the tone for the start of a chapter, so the goal of my translation here to make a translation that it conveys to the reader a reason why that verse was chosen, rather than the “perfect” way 千秋, 碧落,独倚 or a word like that is translated (or, for example, everyone let’s agree on a translation of the poem title 《春江花月夜》 - pain - lol). I do not think I can do any of these poetry translations justice, as poetry translations in any language is more like a feeling of the soul that you try to fit within the available confines of another language, hoping that the reader on the other side can experience something in their own individual way through your shared humanity rather than language alone. Also, I do have a lot of commentary and notes that I wanted to make but I might do that in a different place (maybe as footnotes) at another time, I don’t want to interrupt the flow of the reader by sticking my own comments everywhere.

#The old man switched off his mobile phone and rode for a month to see the bridge of his dreams#
Xiaoxiang Morning Herald 9-20 14:28
[Dialogue with Chen Youyin, a 76-year-old ‘getaway grandfather’ from Shaanxi: after a lifetime of farming, I switched off my mobile phone and secretly rode thousands of miles to see the bridge of my dreams]
#Unhidable Youth#
The 76-year-old Chen Youyin is an ordinary farmer on the yellow soil of Shaanxi. Other than being drafted into the army in 1970 and serving as a soldier in Kaifeng, Henan Province for a few years, he has never left his hometown of Lantian County, Xi'an, in his life.
The sight of the Yangtze River Bridge in Wuhan in this company commander's his hometown, described by his company commander when he was in the army, always lingered in his mind. After nearly fifty years of facing the land and crops day in and day out, the details of those scenes are blurred, and he only remembers ‘how beautiful’ and ‘how good’ the bridge was.
In the past two years, some of his advance-age comrades have described the outside world to him, saying that they should seize the opportunity to check out the outside world, and he was really moved by the thought that he would be able to test the ‘beauty’ that had taken root in his mind.
On 8 August 2024, while the field was idle and his wife, who had been sick for more than thirty years, had recently improved, Chen Youyin took with him a military mackintosh that he had brought back with him when he was discharged from the army in 1975, three changes of clothes, a large bottle of water, and more than one thousand yuan that his friends and relatives had stuffed into him more than thirty years ago when they saw that his family was not in a good condition. Borrowing a yellow bicycle from a nearby child and removing the batteries from his mobile phone as he did not want to trouble anyone, he quietly left home to ‘fulfil his dream’ alone.
During this trip of thousands of miles of riding, Chen Youyin did not count the days and nights. Knowing that his family was anxiously looking for him for a full month, he finally realised that he was in bigger ‘trouble’. When he was picked up by his family from Wuhan, he hadn't yet found the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge that his company commander had told him about. He chose to let the thought dissipate: what he had seen along the way was enough.
A lost 76-year-old man
In early August, a search notice posted by many rescue teams in Xi'an Lantian was spread, saying that a 76-year-old man, Chen Youyin, on August 8 at 12 noon was lost from the village riding a yellow shared bike out of the village and has not returned since turn. Checking the monitoring feed, it was found that the elder had appeared on the day at 1:00 pm in the local White Deer Plaza. He was wearing a white blue checkered shirt, grey trousers, and a pair of coffee-coloured leather shoes at the time. Family members had searched for him but with no avail and has been reported to the police. Chen Youyin himself is unaware of this. In his version of the story, at noon on the 8th, he made three bowls of noodles as usual, and ate together with his wife and grandson. Then he had a good bath, put on a clean clothes, take out the thousands of dollars savings that he had been hiding for over 30 years - usually money at home was managed by his wife; Even when he receive a dollar change when purchasing things he will give it back to his wife. That day he bought a barrel of oil and put the change on the table as usual, so the family thought he went out with no money on him. Before leaving, Chen Youyin plucked the battery of his elder's phone. He did not want his family to know; for one he was afraid that they will stop him due to his old age, and two he was afraid to trouble them so spent money and effort to see his dream came true when they realised that he was unyielding. He should be able to do it by himself by riding a shared bicycle and travelling on a budget. He also considered whether to leave a note, but thought that it should only take a few days, so he let it pass.
2. asking for directions along the national highway, meting a lot of good Samaritan
Chen Youyin speculated that he should be able to get to Wuhan if he travel along the national highway by the river. He went all the way east out of Tongguan, to Henan Sanmenxia and to Kaifeng and Zhengzhou where he was once a soldier, and then south to Wuhan. Riding 50 miles to 100 miles a day, he felt a little bit tired during the first ten days, but it got easier and easier the more he rode. When he was hungry, he would then buy some mantou and noodles. At night he would pave the ground with his military mackintosh and sleep in his clothes.
On the way, Chen Youyin had saw a very different landscape from his hometown, and all kinds of crops that he had planted. While he was in the army in Kaifeng, the road was dusty with yellow sands flying in sky and the pedestrians dared not to open their mouths; now it has turned into green forest, and the dirt roads and mount into a spacious avenue and high-rise buildings. He also went to find his ‘old company’, which was also brand new beyond recognition. When the comrades stationed there heard that he was going to ride to Wuhan, they sponsored him a set of new clothes and shoes. On the road, Chen Youyin also has a feeling that there are a lot of good people. When he met those fellow Shaanxi countrymen who opened shops, they refused to charge him money when they saw him alone outside of his hometown, and were as kind to him as neighbours.
For safety reasons, he usually didn't ride his bike at night and pushes it along. One time he met a comrade woman riding a motorbike. Neither of them knew each other and she kept following him. He later realised that she was trying to light his way with her headlights. He told her that she was a comrade woman and was going in the exact opposite direction to him, so she should stop helping him. Then he found that the motorbike was gone, but a police car came next. The comrade called the police as she was worried for him. The police, after understanding his situation, also followed behind him back and highting him the road, until he found the resting spot.
On the way, Chen Youyin was afraid of getting lost, so he travelled along the national highway and did not enter any city until he reached Wuhan.
3. There is no one in the taxi; how can it also run on the road?
The first bridge he saw in Wuhan shocked Chen Youyin to the point that he thought this should be the very beautiful very nice bridge that the company commander said. He counted it layer by layer. It was a steel bridge that had as much as five layers; very spectacular. It was a pity that people couldn't go up. This morning Chen Youyin wandered around the neighbourhood, pondering for quite a while what these five layers are for, if it was for soldiers to station and guard the bridge, there was no need to build it so high. His conjecture was denied by a passers-by. He also subsequently learned that the bridge was not the one that his company commander mentioend. Wuhan has twelve bridges across Yangtze River and they were rather away from each other. He had to go into the city to find it slowly.
Chen Youyin then saw two more bridges. With only one layer, they looked a little ordinary compared to the first bridge, but at night when the lights are on they were still very beautiful. He also saw a big boat sailing on the wide river with people going up and down. The river back home could never be used for sailing this kind of boat. Arriving at Wuhan in the last two days, Chen Youyin hadn't much rush. Hhe wandered around the bridge and came across a lot of new things. ‘Not to mention, that taxi, I feel very strange. I thought this car was running on the road, but how come no one was driving it. After after someone, they said it is a driverless car!’ Chen Youyin thought, now the development was really fast; his village has not changed much, but cities outside has dramatically transformed.
The next night, Chen Youyin fell asleep on a chair near the bridge, but it did not take long to be woken up by the passing sprinkler. Chen Youyin walked and walked again and got lost in a field of tall buildings.
4. After he was ‘lost’ for a month, the bridge was still not found but real life has returned
Late at night on September 7, Chen Dongyi suddenly received a phone call from the police, saying that his father Chen Youyin was found in Wuhan. Chen Dongyi immediately drove there overnight.
Chen Youyin did not want to disturb his family. He couldn't find his way, so he walked into a police station. The police saw his appearance and thought he was a homeless person and so they did not let him go, cook for him, let him rest, and buy him a ticket back to Xi'an. Chen Youyin said he had money and there no need to bother. The police was not assured and wanted to contact his family.
Once they got into contact they found that the old man turned out to be a missing person from Lantian County that the locals had sought out for a month. And Chen Youyin just found out that he had been out for a full month. His children were so anxious that not only they to find him on own, but also mobilised the entire village of young adults to search all over the village.
On September 8 past 9 o'clock in the morning, the family has rushed to the police station. Although nothing was said, Chen Youyin knew that they wre furious. He listened to their arrangements to get a haircut and rest in the hotel room for a short break, and then they returned to Xi'an. Chen Youyin did not mention the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge again. He felt very sorry for his children. He also heard that there was fraudster claimed to know his whereabouts and demanded 10,000 yuan. The fact that his son was cheated out of 200 yuan also made him feel very sorry.
But in his son's and daughter's heart, after the anger subsided, a great guilt was left. The daughter Ms Chen claimed that they never knew that his father had such a wish. Father was always that kind of character, who bores all sufferings on their own. Not only there was a lack of communication in everyday life, father was particularly afraid of troubling them.
On September 15, Chen Youyin, back in his hometown in Shaanxi, received a photo. Wuhan Police Bureau Qiaokou District Branch had printed out a photo of ‘first bridge on the Yangtze River’ photo taken by a Yangtze River Daily reporter and sent it to him.
THE END
Aftermath:
On September 20, Wuhan City Culture and Tourism Bureau official account issued a post, claiming that they will invite Shaanxi ‘’runaway grandfather‘’ Chen Youyin and his family to go to Wuhan again to see the bridge, the river, and the lake.

Hua Cheng's Name - “A Spring’s Night under the Joyous Rain” 《春夜喜雨》 by Du Fu.
This is possibly the poem that inspired Hua Cheng's name according to C fans. So here it goes~
This is a Tang Dynasty poem written by the poet Du Fu. He was staying in Chengdu for two years and his life had been greatly unsettled by war, famine and politics. Du Fu had been involved in farming and was staying with the villages. According to historical records, there was a famine in the surrounding area and the prices of rice had increased, and people started eating each other. Hence, when Du Fu heard the wound of rain, he was overwhelmed with joy.
Tumblr media
The useful rain knows when it should fall, it’s the time when spring’s about to come.
It flows with the winds and springs and arrives silently at night, nourishing everything in silence.
The fields are dark on a rainy night, only the lights on the river boats sparkled on their own.
At day break, the flowers moist with rain are red and delicate, entire Brocade City was covered in a sea of flowers.
(Chengdu was previously known as the Brocade City 锦官城 as they were famous for making Sichuan Brocade in the past. You can read more about it here.)
My analysis - TGCF related.
Hua Cheng’s name comes from the last line in the poem. Firstly, lets talk about the actual imagery of the line. The repeated use of “rain” and “flowers” in this poem seems like the muse inspiration Hua Cheng’s title “Crimson/Blood Rain Sought Flower 血雨探花”. And in the poem, it almost seems as thought the rain in the first two lines do 'find' the flowers in the last sentence. The flowers in this poem likely symbolise Xie Lian since he does carry a sword and a flower.
And boy, the relief and joy when that happens! You can practically sense the poet’s relief in the last line. I imagine this was probably what Hua Cheng was feeling whenever he was reunited with Xie Lian after so much hardship! And the poem ends on a beautiful note with a city full of flowers. Hua Cheng’s name does mean Flower City if you break it down literally so it's kind of fitting.

queer rep in 《鸣龙少年》 The Hope (2023)
i just finished bingeing all 30 episodes last night and i thought i was over this, but i'm really not.
Yu Yang (禹洋) is a shy senior in Class 11 with a stammer. in ep. 5, we learn that due to health issues, he took an extended leave from school and thus had to repeat his second year, so he's a year older than his peers. his mother is well-meaning but overbearing, and he was made the target of quite egregious bullying before he joined Lei Ming's (雷鸣) class. throughout the show, we see him become more and more willing to voice his own opinions and set boundaries, esp. with his mother.
(a side point, but i absolutely adore how the show did not pathologize his stammer as a bad thing he had to be "cured" of; it's through unconditional acceptance and encouragement from the adults in his life and his friends that we see him naturally come out of his shell.)
unlike his four friends in Class 11, he doesn't seem to be embroiled in any of their tangled 感情线 / "love" lines, nor does he seem to have one at all—until ep. 21.
on new year's day, the Class 11 CPs are a mess. Jiang Qinglang (江晴朗) confesses to Cheng Yushan (程雨杉), leaving poor Bian Xiaoxiao (边晓晓) who likes JQL and Li Ran (李燃) who likes CYS behind.
so when the fireworks go off, JQL and CYS are togther, whereas BXX and LR are together—contrary to how the show has been pairing them thus far.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then we cut to YY, who is watching the fireworks alone, but about to text someone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
that's a name we haven't seen before! Wu Fan (吴凡), i wonder who that is?
importantly, we see him delete the "I" and instead wish this person "happy new year."
Tumblr media
the entirety of ep. 21 was about confessions, crushes, dating/breaking up/moving on, and the innocent and pure feelings we experience in our 青春 / youth.
Tumblr media
so it's truly not that big of a stretch for me to think that what YY may originally have been intending to write was “我喜欢你” / "I like you."
then, in ep. 24, Lei Ming takes his class on a trip to Qingbei University in Beijing. and it's there we finally learn who the mysterious WF is.
four years ago in 2015, an older student once stood up for the bullied YY and ended up with quite a nasty beating.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as YY quietly cleans his savior's injuries, they have a brief exchange:
Yu Yang: I'm sorry. Wu Fan: You haven't done anything wrong. What are you apologizing for? In the future, raise your voice when you speak and build up your muscles; I guarantee no one will dare to mistreat you. If that really doesn't work, let's enroll in the same university later on. In the future, I'll continue to protect you.
in the present (2019), YY is waiting outside WF's university. originally overjoyed to see WF, YY's expression drops when he sees his xuezhang with a girlfriend. nevertheless, this might be one of the only times in this entire show we see YY don such a sweet open-mouthed smile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
they grab milk tea together and catch up, reminiscing about their earlier years. unfortunately, whereas YY has never forgotten their first meeting, WF remarks that he would've forgotten about it entirely if not for YY mentioning it now.
then YY asks what will happen after WF graduates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the camera cuts to a shot of the milk tea brand: 心意 / the intentions of my heart.
this milk tea shop is a recurring setting throughout this drama. it's where one of the main CPs (Li Ran & Yu Chengshan) had one of their earliest interactions in ep. 3, and it has consistently been romantically coded (e.g., a boy treating his crush to a cup of milk tea).
Tumblr media
so, effectively, as WF tosses away his empty cup, that is also signaling the short lifespan of his current relationship.
finally, WF encourages YY. only...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wu Fan: I promised my mom I'll return home to take the civil service exam. After I graduate next year, I'll immediately go back to Xingzhou.
Tumblr media
and then, once again, as YY sadly watches WF walk away, the camera cuts to the milk tea cup in his own hands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the end, Yu Yang never got to express his 心意 for his xuezhang, and he can only keep it to himself.
but as their Chinese teacher Tan Xiaozhou (谭小舟) remarked earlier in ep. 21 during their class on love poems:
Love is not only in the present tense or future tense, but also in the past tense. Having loved before doesn't mean that the current love isn't real. Loving now doesn't mean you won't love again in the future. If you didn't obtain it, or you broke up—without longing, without resentment—silently remembering the beautiful parts—bidding "Take care" in a cool demeanor: this, also, is love. [...] To me, the most important thing about love is that I can respect your independent nature, protect your lonely soul, and defend your right not to love me.
and so concludes our Class 11 xuezhang's 感情线. for a gaokao-prep cdrama that aired on CCTV8, i honestly cannot believe we got any of this.
here are two more small instances of queer acknowledgment:
in ep. 13, school psychologist Sang Xia (桑夏) leads a lecture on sexual harassment: what it looks like, how to prevent it, how to keep yourself safe. right from the start, she emphasizes that boys can be victims as well—and also that harassment can occur between same-sex individuals.
in ep. 21, when the school runs amok with dating rumors among the teachers, Sang Xia questions why everyone defaults to thinking that it must be a male teacher confessing to a female teacher.
overall, i seriously cannot recommend this show enough. it tackles so many themes (e.g., the premature grief of losing a loved one to Alzheimer's; the importance of destigmatizing depression and mental health overall; the hugely significant role that family/home life has on students' ability to perform well in school; that parents are not infallible and can be controlling/manipulative/abusive, even if unintentionally; that SES so greatly impacts the trajectory of a student's life; how damaging bullying/cyberbullying can be; and that though society is rife with inequity and injustice, it is the responsibility of adults—as best as they can—to create a more just and safer world for all children), and in both a realistic and gently heartwarming way.

Hi, um sorry if you had been asked this before and you had answered, tumblr is a bit hard for me to navigate! But what is the meaning behind Wei Chunyang 's name or like what are the characters because so far I have deduced that it might mean spring sheep and i really don't want to misunderstand something.
The characters for Chunyang's name are 春阳 (spring sun). Wangxian's three younger children all have nature names; and as the youngest, the yang in Chunyang's name ties back to Xiao-Yu's name (晓辉, with the xiao for dawn and the hui for radiance), and the chun is a reference to the season she was born and to the lan in Shuilan (水兰, water orchid) as most orchids bloom in early spring. :)

We have a really cool new poem for you this Gushiwensday Shabbes. It's by Yuan Zhen and I'm calling it "Aubade."
Half the sky trembling on the edge of daybreak, half still dark… drunk on the scents of flowers, dreaming, and the songs of orioles--- A dog shivers and stretches, and the bell begins to sound. It's twenty years ago and I'm in the monastery again, this dawn.
Notes and original text under the cut.
So Yuan Zhen is most famous for his epistolary story called Biography of Yingying, which is about a love affair between a student and a mercurial young woman, and has been adapted into things like paintings and operas. I mention this because I'm taking this poem as referring to that work, being from the perspective of the student. With that let's get to the first note:
Aubade -- The title is literally Spring Dawn, but "spring" is often linked to sex and romance, and I take the last line to be in reference to Yingying leaving the student's room at dawn to go back to her house, for reasons that I'll talk more about in the note on that line. Do people know what an aubade is? It's a poem or song specifically on the subject of leaving your lover at daybreak. Love that we have a word for this.
half the sky... daybreak --- Literally "half wanting dawn;" though wanting here often has sexual connotations, it also idiomatically means "about to happen," as in, a thing wants to happen. I chose "trembling" here because it can also read as sexy.
drunk... orioles --- This poem is so tightly written that I'm just going to have to do a whole line at a time, huh? First of all, the grammar: the first couplet of this poem has a very dreamlike vibe, without any specific action or passage of time, so I've deliberately resisted trying to make anything grammatically complete. Second, the character used for smelling flowers and for hearing birds is actually the same character! This could be evoking a kind of half-awake confusion of the senses, or it could be about smelling your girl (莺 is the bird mentioned here; 莺莺 is the name of the titular character in Biography of Yingying).
shivers and stretches --- Pretty ambiguous. Due to the multiple meanings of 起 it could also be read as "begins to shake [the bell]." I didn't go with that partly because it would be pretty redundant and partly because I thought the image of a dog stretching so hard it shivers a little was cute.
It's twenty... this dawn --- Literally "twenty years ago dawn temple feeling." This is the twenty years ago dawn temple feeling! The feeling I've kept in mind while translating is the feeling of watching your lover get up and leave; the student in the story is staying at a monastery, and while mostly he goes over to her place there are a few times where she comes to his. So we have a poem from the perspective of the student twenty years later, now married to someone else, still thinking of Yingying when the sounds and smells remind him of her. We think Yingying might be based on a lover of Yuan Zhen's, so I'm imagining him fictionalizing his own feelings to write this poem.
