Sangaku Saturday #4
In the previous info post, we went over the debate on the religious aspect of sangaku, and the fact that the absence of prayers on these tablets was more puzzling to some than the mathematics. As such, the tablets are not ema prayer tablets, but donations, which usually don't feature prayers on them. Case in point, some consecrated sake and French wine seen at Meiji-jingû in 2016.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beyond wishing for good fortune and health, such donations serve two very worldly purposes: to contribute to the life and prestige of the shrine or temple (having a famous contributor makes the shrine famous by association), and to advertise the donor in return, as their name is on display. See this large torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha paid for by TV Asahi (テレビ朝日).
Tumblr media
With that in mind, Meijizen's cynical comment from 1673 that sangaku aim "to celebrate the mathematical genius of their authors" may not far from the truth. The authors of sangaku are looking to gain notoriety through the publicity that the shrine or temple provides. But was the bemused Meijizen the target audience?
More on that in a couple of weeks. Below the cut is the solution to last week's problem.
Tumblr media
The solution to the first problem (below the cut in this post) is the key. Name K, L and M the intersections of the three circles with the horizontal line. Then, by using that previous result,
Tumblr media
Indeed, as in that problem, we can construct three right triangles, ABH, ACI and BCJ and apply Pythagoras's theorem in each.
Now, it suffices to note that KL = KM + LM, so
Tumblr media
or, dividing by 2*squareroot(pqr), we get the desired result:
Tumblr media
Inverting and squaring this yields the formula for r:
Tumblr media
This gives us the means to construct this figure on paper using a compass and a marked ruler. Having chosen two radii p and q and constructed the two large circles (remember that AB=p+q) and a line tangent to both, placing M and C is done after calculating the lengths IK=CM=r and IC=KM=2*sqrt(pr).

A striking restaurant sign with two different typefaces! My favorite is probably the duct tape looking one on the left. It reads 居酒屋嘉久恋慕 Izakaya Kakurenbo.
居酒屋 refers to a traditional drinking establishment that also serves snacks and/or food. They range from very casual to very classy.
居 means reside, exist, be, or live with. As the verb "to be," it's only used for living things. It’s read い.る, い, お.る, キョ, or コ.
酒 means alcohol or nihonshu/sake (more on the subtleties here). It's read さけ, さか, or シュ.
屋 means room, apartment, chamber, greenhouse, or cellar. It’s read むろ or シツ.
嘉久恋慕 is a pun on 隠れんぼ or 隠れん坊 【かくれんぼ】, meaning hide-and-seek. It may look like a four-character compound, but it's a made up word. However, 恋慕 【れんぼ】 means love, attachment, tender emotions, or falling in love.
嘉 (which is new to me) means praise, applaud, esteem, auspicious, or happy. It's read よみ.する, よい, or カ (the last of which you probably guessed from the 加 radical).
久 means long time (ago/since), first time in a long time, or old story. It's read ひさ.しい, キュウ, or ク.
恋 means love, romance, yearning, missing (someone), or darling. It's read こ.う, こい, こい.しい, or レン. The bottom radical 心 means heart or mind.
慕 means pining, yearning, love dearly, or adore. The readings are した.う and ボ. Be careful not to mix it up with 募 recruit/solicit, though they both share the ボ reading.

A Mama-san's Oasis: A Warm Glow in Yokohama's Nightlife
Location: Yokohamabashi, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 18:46 on December 19, 2023
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 160 for 1.0 sec. at ƒ/5.6 Astia/Soft film simulation
While you might feel a bit hesitant to step into this tavern due to its lack of reviews, location on a dark alleyway, absence of a website, and minimal presence on Google Maps, a delightful surprise awaits you upon entering, where you'll be warmly greeted by the sweet, elderly Mama-san who runs the well-kept and clean pub.
The establishment is a unique blend, functioning both as an izakaya, offering a diverse range of foods that go well with Japanese sake, shochu or beer, and as a bar for those seeking a purely drink-centric experience.
Once inside, you'll find a long, narrow space divided by a counter with seven seats. As soon as you step in, the regulars are eager to strike up a conversation (in Japanese), creating an easygoing atmosphere to connect with your new drinking buddies. (Non-alcoholic drinks are also available.)
While the food may lean towards the pricey side, every dish is lovingly home-cooked by the Mama-san and boasts a delicious flavor. Notably, the prices for the sashimi (sliced raw fish) are competitive with other local taverns and sashimi restaurants.
Personally, I plan to return with my camera on a quieter day, hoping to capture the charm of the interior and perhaps gain the Mama-san's trust to photograph both the shop and her in action.
