The Japanese translation of the Murderbot Diaries gives murderbot the wonderful first person "弊機", but it's hard to explain the word "弊機"...

翻訳機にかけても"my machine"としか出てこないんですけど、ぜんぜん違うんですよ　Iの訳語であることは確かで

When I put it into the translator, it just says "my machine", but that's not the same mean at all. I'm pretty sure it's a translation of "I".

3号の"貴機(=マーダーボットに対してのYouの訳語)"についても！

I'm also interested in the use of "貴機" (the translation of "you" for Murderbot by Three)!

弊社/貴社と明らかな対応関係なんだけど、そもそも英語には 自分の会社をへりくだって言う敬語/相手の会社を尊敬して言う敬語 にあたる言葉そのものが存在しない！

It's a word that has an obvious correspondence to 弊社(our company)/貴社(your company). In the first place, in English, there is no word itself that corresponds to the honorifics used for humbling one's own company/respecting the other company. There is no word that can express it in one word!

弊は自分に帰属するものについてへりくだって付けることばで、機はmachineだよね

The word "弊" is a humble term for something that belongs to them, and "機" is a machine, right?

あー……あとそう！「弊機(heiki)」は「兵器(heiki)」と音がまったく同じなんですよ！美しいダブルミーニング！

Oh, ...and yes! The word "弊機(heiki)" sounds exactly the same as "兵器(heiki)(=weapon)"! Beautiful double-meaning!

The Japanese language allows various kinds of the first person to be used as desired (even if the original first person is used, the language can be understood without explanation), and the first person can reveal a great deal about the character's attributes.

When translating various works into Japanese, the first thing to do is to define the first person of all the characters, a great job...

そして一人称を決めたら今度はそれをひらがなにするのか漢字にするのかを考えないといけない

原語で読んでいるときもミキの"I"はひらがなの「ぼく」であるな～と感じる

It's a coined term, so it's clear in one word who it refers to in what work.

キャラクターを指すのにそのキャラクターの一人称を使っているのでちょっと文章としては奇妙になるが。

It's a bit odd as a sentence, though, because it uses the first person of the character to refer to the character.

そういえばARTの一人称は「本船」なんだけど、ARTのことを本船と呼ぶ人はそれほど見ないな…

Come to think of it, ART's first person is "本船", but I don't see that many people calling ART ”本船”...

ちなみに「本船」は"This/Our/My Ship"くらいの温度感の意味合いで、警備ユニットたちのそれと違ってまったくへりくだるニュアンスはないよ。いかにもARTらしい。

By the way, "本船" means something like "This/Our/My Ship", and unlike SecUnit's, there is no humility in it at all. It's just like ART.

Izuku (出久) is a rare yet pre-existing name meaning “long exit.” Fortunately for me, there is a suuuuperrr easy female alternative for this, which is Izuki.

Bakugou is said to call Izuku “Deku” because it’s another reading of his name that can have the meaning “one who can’t do anything.” Izuku decides to use this as his hero name because it’s also similar to 出来る (dekiru), meaning “you can do it.”

Trying to use kanji from Izuki to find insulting yet also potentially inspiring nicknames was indeed challenging ngl, but I eventually decided on “Miki,” which is an alternate reading of Izuki. It can have the meaning “give up,” but also means “beautiful chronicle” as a female given name.

So our final products: Izuki (泉輝) with nickname Miki (ミキ).

Miki from Hozuki’s Coolheadedness 2: Part II

Today's AniAnimal is Miki-nyan in her fox form in "Hozuki’s Coolheadedness 2: Part II". Even though she is a fox, she goes 'nya' as part of her idol persona. 今日のアニアニマルは『鬼灯の冷徹 第弐期その���』の狐姿のミキにゃんです。アイドル活動のせいで狐なのに『にゃ』の語尾を使う。

We just got out of Miki Shinichiro’s panel and autograph session 😭😭😭 He’s so wonderful, just getting to sit and listen to him for an hour was a gift. He truly loves anime and voice acting, he carries his Initial D arcade card around with him, and he was really excited when he got to San Antonio bc it was used as a setting in episode 6 of The Reflection so he recognized the tower and the Riverwalk immediately. In fact it was the director, Nagahama-san’s influence that brought him to the con bc Nagahama-san wanted to do location scouting. Miki-san had his first American hamburger and was overwhelmed by the size but said it was delicious.

They didn’t allow photo or video so I only have an audio recording which I may upload later. I got to ask him a question about Hijikata from Hakuouki and if it was challenging or interesting to play 20 different versions of the story while staying loyal to the character, and he said that because Hijikata was a real person with a real story, he always tries to keep that at the core. During a different question, he said he sees himself as a literal voice for each character rather than putting himself into the role.

During the autograph session, I told him 二十年前にからミキさんの声が好きです (I’ve loved Miki-san’s voice for 20 years), and he laughed but I couldn’t hear what he said in return coz my ears were giving out, but still he was so lovely in person 🥺

Q: 「エリート・クラス・ドライバー」とは？

A: ピコミキの二人がサイボーグになった日から、色々の特別の能力がインストールされました。ミキちゃんは宇宙パイロットもなんですし、どんな乗り物でも運転することができます。「エリート・クラス・ドライバー」というタイトルは最強の運転免許証ですし、人間には到達できないものなんです。

その二人が一緒に働くとき、ミキちゃんは宇宙船と大砲を操縦し、ピコ君はそれ以外のことをすべて行います。

Answer (ENG): Since the day Piko & Miki became cyborgs, various special abilities were installed into them. Since Miki is also a space pilot, she can drive any kind of vehicle. The title of "Elite Class Driver" is the highest possible class of driver's license, which is impossible for humans to achieve.
