Hiragana and Katakana / ひらがな、カタカナ

There are 3 types of characters in Japanese - Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

Hiragana(ひらがな) is the easiest to read, and every sentence can be written in it, just like alphabet in English, even if we don't know correct Kanji.

Katakana(カタカナ) is another version of Hiragana, used for the words from foreign countries. For example, we write "ケーキ"(from "cake" in English) or "パン"(from "pão" in Portuguese, which means "bread" in English) as both didn't originally exist in Japan.

Kanji was brought from China, of course, and were developed as Japanese characters. Each Kanji has each meaning, so it makes us easier to understand what it exactly means. For example, when we see "いし", we don't know what it means because we have many words of the same sound ;石(stone), 意思(intention), 医師(doctor), etc.

Japanese sentences are made up of a mixture of these three types of characters.

"No! Please, I don't want that!" You screamed while you were chained to to the mighty and imposing figure of your husband. As if he hadn't heard, the dark fae continued to rub his scent on your body as he rubbed against you.

His chest was emitting strong vibrations, purring as he finally could spend the whole night with his one and only love.

His purring stopped for a moment as he tightened his grip causing you to choke for a second, and ending any escape attempts you were making.

"It's for your own good, yet you do not see that we are made for each other. And our son needs a little brother, I heard him complain to Lilia because he wanted someone else to play with.." Said softly the monarch stroking your stomach, trying to get closer to his draconic figure. Immediately you began to wriggle against his grip and against his unwanted caresses.

Malleus pulled you back into his grip, this time squeezing tighter, as his forked tongue began to lick your ear and pepper kisses all over your jaw.

You didn't want it. You did not want to.

Taking all courage, you began to scream. By now you were exhausted. You were sick of Malleus, you were sick of his acting like you two were a normal couple, you were sick of the castle, of every wall that trapped you.

You hated Lilia, who did nothing but encourage the dragon's sick behavior, and who took every single moment to threaten you with being a perfect mate to your loving and loyal husband.

You hated Silver, who did absolutely nothing to stop the madness that happened right in front of his eyes, indeed, who even ignored that you were his old friend and that you had been kidnapped by that unbalanced one who "loved" you.

And you hated Sebek, who kept yelling at you for every single step you took and who spent his life idolizing the tenacity with which his master managed to keep you in your place, good and pregnant under his powerful gaze.

"What the fuck is wrong with you! You're just a spoiled lizard who believes that someone will love you just because you locked them up! The fucking world doesn't work like that, YOU are the one who sees nothing. YOU are the one who sticks with the first person who paid attention to you. YOU make me sick! I can't do this anymore!"

"..." The fae said nothing as he looked at you absently, pushing you away from his womb and moving away from the head of the bed abruptly.

Quickly he walked over to the large desk in the room.

He stood there for a few seconds. Suddenly he threw everything on the ground screaming curses and clawing his hands in his hair.

You couldn't see it as he was turned from behind, clawing at his shoulders in an attempt to calm down. And preventing him from hurting you.

He had always tried to get close to you, he had provided you with the best clothes his tailors could make, he had given you a majestic castle in which you could wander, he had ordered his chefs to cook anything you wanted, he had always treated you with the utmost love and care.

He even gave you a baby.

"For real?" He asked harshly, still turned from the back.

In an instant, his clawed fingers were around your neck.

He kept squeezing your throat. You could hardly breathe and you began to see little black dots around your sight.

His face was fringed with black scales, his green eyes iridescent as a light green fire came out of his mouth accompanied by smoke that began to burn your nightgown and your skin.

Before you could pass out, he let go of your neck, instead frantically searching for something on her belt.

Your eyes flew open in realization as he gripped one of the spools tied around his waist.

With his free arm he suddenly turned you on your stomach and with his claws he tore at the dress you were wearing.

As you tried to crawl away fiercely, the fae roughly grabbed your hair forcing your back to arch in the sudden pain and causing you to stop instantly.

"Now I'll show you what a spoiled lizard can do to a stupid and insolent human like you."

The sharp point ripped through the tender flesh of your back as you screamed.

Your body was covered in scrapes, bruises, and cuts that by now had gone numb to how much they had been abused, and your back completely bloodied and mangled, your husband stood majestically.

"Scream all you want. They have all given up on you anyway."

Even the servants of the castle in the Valley of Thorns heard those painful screams but did nothing to stop their young master. They would not be tortured.

The young fae took a phial and slid into the drops of blood running down your battered's back.

With the same spool with which he carved his name on your back, he cut his palm and then let his dark blood drip into the vial, muttering an ancient spell while you, half-conscious, could no longer understand anything.

An ancient spell. A Fae rite handed down from ancient primordial beings to the royal family of the Valley of Thorns. An indestructible bond, which nothing and no one could ever break. The penalty for such a futile attempt would have been death.

You would never be able to escape him.

Draconia released your wrists and ankles and made you sleep with another spell.

'Why you can't do this angelic expression when you're with me?'

'Maybe I should keep you like that way forever.'

'Even the sleeping beauty had been sleeping alone until it has not arrived the prince to wake her up with a sweet kiss of true love.'

Eventually he realized.

The kiss of true love!

This served to their relationship!

You did not wake up.

Malleus, thinking he had not put feelings enough in the previous, kissed you again.

What did I do with my Friday night, you may ask?

Half-assed a Ferengi katakana font, is what. Yeah, I'm what you'd call...pretty cool.

Deets below:

So it turns out the phonemes for the Ferengi character set (ganked from LCARS47.com) map fairly well onto katakana? With some notable exceptions. A lot of phonemes map 1:1 very nicely, but there are spots where Ferengi sounds mush together (ta/da, for example) where the kana make them distinct タダ (ta and da respectively).

There are also sounds that aren't present in Japanese that are distinct in the Ferengi that necessitated some counterintuitive mapping. All the Ferengi l- sounds map onto the z- dakuon, for instance. Ferengi z-sounds already lump into the s-/z-/sh- group, which left the z- dakuon free.

So, Leeta would be リタ ri ta in actual katakana. But to type her name in Ferengi, you have to spell it ジタ (ji ta) to give you "li ta".

For another example, to spell Garak: ガラク ga ra ku. But k- and g- sounds are grouped in Ferengi, so instead it's spelled ka ra ku.

And that left the g- dakuon free to use for the q- sounds that don't exist in katakana, so Quark, in katakana, would need to be クワルク ku wa ru ku. But in this Ferengi font it's spelled ga ru ku, which looks a lot closer to English Garak, doesn't it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ferengi doesn't appear to have terminal consonants going by the chart, so sounding out words feels eerily familiar to spelling in katakana. Maybe they clip off the vowel at the end, ~desu~ style.

Still, it's pretty fun to play with as an English cipher or for names and decorative nonsense. Here's a screenshot of my mucking around. From left to right: original word - Ferengi phonemes - what to type while in full-width katakana input mode - final result.

And here's the full mapping of phonemes to kana. You can see where I had to make some allowances. It's possible there's a different writing system that fits better, or a better way to map onto katakana, but this is as well as I can do with my "occasionally fucks around on duolingo" level of expertise, lol.

Writing System

This is super important, before we begin with learning words and sentences.

Japanese has 3 writing systems so to speak. Two of them are syllabaries, you may refer to them as "Alphabets", and the third writing system is sort of symbol based, like Chinese.

There's also ROMAJI. Which we'll be using to help you learn sounds and to speak. But please, work on learning the syllabaries as soon as possible. Romaji is terrible for many reasons, including the fact that everyone and their mother writes Romaji in a different way. You may notice that my Romaji is different than some others you've come across. So again. Try to get away from it as soon as possible. Don't be afraid. I know you can do it!

We'll start with Kana, namely Hiragana as you'll be seeing it the most.

HIRAGANA

Hiragana is used mainly for native Japanese words. You will see Hiragana everywhere. So you'll be wanting to learn that first.

Okay, now some of these characters get whats called a "Dakuten" that's a little " or ゜that's next to the Hiragana that changes it's sound. those are as follows:

You'll notice that 「ぢ」sounds like "zi" ... or "dzi"... and not "di" and that 「づ」sounds like "dzu" and not "du" ... that's.... that's a pain in the butt but it is what it is. In order to get the "di" sound it's written 「でぃ」"de" and a little "i" makes "di" ... and actually you'll probably only ever see that written in Katakana 「ディ」

Which brings me to the next part. Little vowels and Little Y sounds.

We covered some of the little y sounds last lesson. You'll see more little Ys than little vowels. The biggest thing you need to remember about little Ys is that they're always stuck to an "-i" character.

You'll notice some of these don't have "y"s in the romaji reading. Don't freak. That's just how it works. And is part of the reason I don't like Romaji.

Like I said you'll also see little vowels: ぁ ぃ　ぅ　ぇ　ぉ but like with 「ディ」"di" you'll probably only ever see them in Katakana. Here's a few anyway:

Finally there's little "tsu" っ this little symbol DOUBLES the next consonant!

If you come across a double n it will be written with the lone N first 「ん」 followed by one of the Ns with a vowel next to it.

Ex: Konnichiwa = こんにちは

Like English the double consonant doesn't change the sound, it just lengthens it by a fraction (if even that).

っき = "kki" pronounced the same as "ki" って= "tte" pronounced the same as "te"

Sorry if this is a HELLISH ammount. Just write the syllabaries down and come back to them now and then as reference. You don't have to learn them all today, or this week, or even this month. I just want you to be familiar with them. :)

𝐓𝐚𝐠𝐬: @nonstobene, I hope you like it honey (◠‿◕), it took five months and then I forgot to post it, I was reviewing all the drafts and looking for inspiration for the story about Mitsuya and I remembered that this fic existed.

• The moment he realized he was in love with you, he immediately locked himself in his little "octo-pot", blushing madly.

• They were just harmless dreams, where he imagined taking you by the hand and offering you the best delicacies of the Monster Lounge while looking in love with your beautiful features. He dreamed of taking your face in his hands, stroking your soft cheeks with his thumbs, imagining slowly leaning out and finally savoring the euphoric sensation of your lips against his, and then moving on to kiss every inch of skin he could put on. His hands were shaking.

• At that moment he just wanted to die.

• Curled up in his little place he mulled over how, where and when this infatuation of his had begun.

• Maybe they were your ways, awkward but at the same time strong and authoritative. Maybe your personality, kind but serious at the critical moment. Maybe it was your stunning looks, making him feel smothered with his own saliva the moment you walked into his dorm with your chaotic friends to say the least.

Or maybe it was all of these things put together.

• It was just you. And that was enough to capture his lonely heart, to sink him into a puddle of love and infatuation in his room.

• But he would NEVER have had the courage to confront you. He absolutely does not want to run the risk of being brutally rejected by the person he loves most.

• He would not be deluded: He knows you could never be attracted to a stupid and fat octopus, and for this he prefers to suffer in silence while Ace hugs you in a not so platonic way in flying lessons, or when Deuce would have meddled in a brawl because two quarrelsome students from Savanaclaw decided to annoy you. Or during history lessons, where Jack would diligently wait for you outside the classroom wagging his tail slightly. Or how Epel would show off as often as possible [much to Vil's chagrin], carrying heavy bags for you or moving furniture. Or when Sebek would have screamed about how "such a weak human being could not be alone, because surely you could not have defended yourself without the help of a strong fae".

• He sees in his reflection what he was as a child: an unsociable, fat and stupid octopus, a disgrace to his family and the cause of his parents' separation.

• His mother could not have done anything about the disgusting insults hurled at her only child. He couldn't lose his clientele, and so he urged Azul to be more tenacious than them by telling him that he was stronger, more menacing, but above all smarter than those crab brains.

• Obviously who, if not the two eels closest to the head of the dormitory, could not have noticed this behavior abysmally different from usual.

• Floyd would continue to playfully tease him, miming kisses and making a flushed Azul scream. He would obviously try to hint that Azul might have a crush on you, but he would be immediately stopped by his twin who, at his friend's command and for personal amusement, would urge him to "say hello" to Riddle.
