トラちゃん：別名文太とも。Ｊさん曰くサイテーキジトラヤロウ

2016年頃から庭に来るようになったＪさんより大きなキジトラ。Ｊさんが家猫化した隙をついてボスになったらしい気の強い猫。天敵。

窓越に挑発してくるため、怒った若かりし頃のＪさんは家を破壊して抜け出し喧嘩をすることもしばしば。特に2017年の４月には職場の歓送迎会から帰ってきた家主に深夜診察に連れて行か��るヘビーな流血騒ぎの原因となった。なおこの時の傷は化膿し危険な状態となったが、とある獣医に念入りに洗浄され事なきを得た。以来Ｊさんはその医師を恩人と認識しており、ゴマのスリ具合が他の先生に対するものと違うとの複数の証言がある。

当時Ｊさんは鈴のついた首輪をしていたが、そのせいで気配がバレ負けるるのではと考えた家主が首輪を外す理由を作った。2020年頃に居なくなったらしい。

Stray Tabby: also called Bunta, Mr.J says that damn stray tabby

He was the bigger brown tabby than Mr.J, coming to the garden since 2016. He was a new boss after Mr.J became a house cat, and his fatal enemy.

He always provoked Mr.J so he often got angry and went out to fight with breaking the house. The heaviest one was the bloodshed of Mr.J that was found by landlady when she came back home from the welcome party of her office the early April 2017, then he was took to the vet alty it was already midnight. And . The wound became infected and dangerous, but was carefully cleaned by a veterinary surgeon. Since then, Mr J has recognised the doctor as his benefactor, and there are several testimonies that the way to suck up is different from the way he does with other doctors.

Furthermore, he made the reason why Mr.J doesn't wear a collar usually, because landlady thought he might be defeated by the sounds of the bell of the collar. He's said there's no sighting information around 2020.

It's not your usual master-servant dynamic. He just wants you close to him. As close as possible. He really is rather sweet.

Jin makes a kind of sad face when he says it won't last forever. well, as sad as he can manage.

He knows that once your curse is broken you'll probably go back to your ordinary life. If your curse can't be broken you'll die. And if you, for some reason, continue to stay at Darkwick even after being cured, he'll be a fourth year next year--he's gonna go off to do field work. Eventually he'll work in the highest levels of the Institute and eventually he'll take his father's place as the president. With all of this, there's no way you'll be able to be together, no matter what. This is a short lived burst of happiness and attachment for him. It means a lot more to him than you realize.

see how this is worded differently from when he asks you to stay over because 'your house is too far away'? even when he's trying to be sweet to you, as long as he maintains your power imbalance he feels comfortable--he has something over you here--but trying to lay his feelings bare, just saying 'i want you to stay with me', that's so much more than he's used to saying.

Japanese "Onomatopoeia" 『オノマトペ/Onomatope)』

There are two types in Japanese Onomatopoeia. One is 「擬音語(ぎおんご/Gi-on-go)」 which is “written sound” as we hear, and the other is 「擬態語(ぎたいご/Gi-tai-go)」 which is “written sound of status” as we look or feel.

1) 「擬音語(ぎおんご/Gi-on-go)」: “sound” onomatopoeias

As examples, let’s compare onomatopoeias for some animal sounds in Japanese and English.

犬（いぬ/Inu）「ワンワン(Wan-wan)」 Dog: “Woof woof” “Bow-wow”

猫（ねこ/Neko）「ニャー(Nyaa)」 Cat: “Meow”

牛（うし/Ushi）「モー(Moo)」 Cow: “Moo”

豚（ぶた/Buta）「ブーブー(Buu-buu)」 Pig: “Oink oink”

にわとり（Niwatori）「コケコッコー(Kokekokkoo)」Rooster: “Cock-a-doodle-doo”

2) 「擬態語(ぎたいご/Gi-tai-go)」 “status” onomatopoeias

This type is onomatopoeias of “status”. An easy-to-understand example is “わくわく(Waku-waku)” which became famous through “SPY x FAMILY.” “Waku-waku” means being excited or thrilled about something you look forward to. Although the status does not have that sound, we can imagine Anya’s facial expression and emotions just by seeing the word.

By using onomatopoeias, we can describe the situation or the person’s feelings in detail with simple and short words. For example, if you want to say “It’s raining,” here are some onomatopoeias, from the lightest to the heaviest;

①「雨(あめ/Ame)がポツリポツリ(Potsuri-potsuri)と降(ふ/Fu)っている」…Raindrops are falling at intervals.

②「雨がポツポツ(Potsu-potsu)降っている」…Just a few raindrops are falling.

③「雨がパラパラ(Para-para)降っている」…Raindrops are falling continuously

④「雨がしとしと(Shito-shito)降っている」…It’s quiet, but certainly raining continuously.

⑤「雨がザーザー(Zaa-zaa)降っている」…It’s raining hard and making a fair amount of noise.

⑥「雨がドシャドシャ(Dosha-dosha)降っている」…It’s raining dangerously hard.

Onomatopoeias have existed since before manga and anime existed, but manga has made us more familiar with them, and they have enabled us to share delicate expressions with visual images using just a few words. So I think you’ll be familiar with them naturally while watching anime or manga, without extra effort to memorize them.

Business Japanese Review Part One: Emails!

I'm not sure how many posts I'll make about Business Japanese, but probably more than one so I say the part one is warranted, haha.

Feel free to add anything or any questions in the notes! Like I said, this isn't a fully comprehensive infographic. Also, what do people think of the lined paper style background for the title page/intro? I think they look kinda cute for the introduction, but not for the informative parts...

One thing I will add that I couldn't fit on the slides: I think some textbooks don't have super clear distinctions between 「謙譲語Ⅰ」　「謙譲語Ⅱ」 and 「ていねいご」, so I only specifically mention 謙譲語 broadly here. Parts of 謙譲語Ⅱ and ていねいご are both described as "extra-modest" in some things, for example! Just keep in mind that my post is a simplification, and if you're interested in formal language, maybe start at learning all of the different keigo categories and what they involve!

Vocab list note: The set phrases in the greetings and closings are all comparable to set phrases in English for greetings and closings of emails. I'm putting these set phrases in their entirety in the list, with a comparable English set phrase as the definition. Do not take these as equivalent phrases! They have a similar feeling, but I am not asserting that they have identical meanings. I'm just offering something comparable in case it helps a person make more sense of them!

It was like any other normal day in the lair. Leonardo was meditating on a mat, while Raphael was going at it with his weights. Donatello was working on something in his lab, while Master Splinter was making some tea in the kitchen. And Michelangelo… Mikey was in his room with Klunk, scrolling through Spotify, bored out of his mind. But then, suddenly, he found it. On the first place on the Japanese Top 50, he found a song that scratched his ADHD brain just the right way. And just like it always happened when Mikey found something that made his dopamine spike, he had to show it to his family. And that was just what he did, marching into the living area with a big loud speaker, putting the hip hop song on before anybody noticed what he was doing.

“Oh no”, Donnie mumbled, rubbing his face with his hand.

“What the hell is that?”, Raph growled in annoyance, while Leo tried to cover his ears. Splinter did nothing but sigh, deciding it was best to stay in the kitchen.

As the music changed, Mikey’s brothers could not deny that they were instructed. At least enough to the point where Donnie started bobbing his head and Raph moved his shoulders. Leo sighed, trying to go back to his meditation once more.

“Oof, not bad”, Raph said, letting himself move more fluently with the music as he continued to lift his weights.

Donnie too started dancing on the spot, doing that expression where he bit his lip in concentration and his brows pushed together, a thing he only did when he listened to something he liked.

With the chorus, all hopes of peace disappeared as all of Leo’s little brothers stopped whatever they were doing in order to focus on the music. Curse them for their short attention span and their good lungs. But despite his slight annoyance, Leo could not deny that the chorus had something to it.

It wasn’ often that his sons got to let loose and enjoy themselves like this, so Splinter rarely tried to stop them, even if they were so loud that his ears would start to hurt. He could live with the slight discomfort just to watch his sons smile and have fun. And he definitely wasn’t against them listening to some Japanese hip hop. It made him feel a little closer to home once more, reminding him it was a long time ago since he last talked to the Ancient One.

these three words, 準備 (じゅんび), 用意 (ようい), and 支度 (したく), are all defined as "preparations" or somehow "getting ready," but they each have their own nuance. if you're interested in the (native japanese) source for this info, see the end of the post!

準備: the broadest

「準備」は、「用意」「支度」に比べて広い範囲で使えるため、迷った場合には「準備」を使うと考えて良いでしょう。具体的なものをそろえるほか、企画や計画をすることも対象に含みます。

the word 準備 is very common. you've probably heard it in phrases like 「準備いい？」, meaning "are you ready?" you can use 準備 pretty much anytime you're not sure which word to pick, since it can be used for physical as well as mental and emotional preparations.

旅行の準備で忙しい。 = i'm busy getting ready for my trip.

スピーチの準備を注意深くした。 = i prepared my speech carefully.

心の準備をしなさい！ = steel yourself!

用意: halfway in between

「用意」は、「準備」よりも狭い使用範囲で、具体的な対象がある場合に使われることが多いです。そのため「準備」とは異なり、具体的な対象がない、「計画を用意」「心の用意」とは一般的に言いません。

unlike 準備, the word 用意 is usually used for physical, material preparations, rather than mental preparations or plans.

出発の用意をしてください。 = please prepare for departure.

パーティーの用意はいい？ = is everything ready for the party?

お風呂の用意ができた。 = the bath is ready.

支度: the most specific

「支度」は、主に衣服や食事、荷物に対して使用され、より限定的な表現として使われます。「準備」「用意」よりも、必要なものを揃えてから物事を実行するまでの時間が短いことが特徴です。

lastly, 支度 is like a more specific version of 用意 in that 支度 usually refers to preparations involving food, clothes, luggage, etc. this word has the nuance that the window for preparation is very slim: as soon as the necessary things are assembled, their intended usage will soon or immediately be carried out.

夕食の支度ができた。 = dinner is ready.

子どもたちに散歩の支度をさせた。 = i got the children ready for their walk.

すぐに旅行の支度をしなさい。 = get ready for the trip at once.

The common broom is ubiquitous in European wetlands. It grows unmindful from alpine peaks to lowland scrub and wilderness, providing temporary shelter from the wind and rain on rugged, bare ground. Although delicate in looks, its long, straight stems are strong and flexible and will not break in the wind. As its name suggests, it is used to make brooms. The broom has also been valued as a medicinal plant since ancient times. In medieval England, it was used by the royal family as a remedy for after drinking and singing parties and debauchery. The reason was that in November, when it was cold and people spent a lot of time indoors, there was nothing else to do but to be merry and boisterous.

The efficacy of medicinal herbs is corroborated in ancient Celtic literature. The ogham form of the word Ngetl represents from a word panacea, meaning 'physician's power'. The most important constituent of the broom plant is sparteine (an alkaloid). Some people associate the broom plant with witches because large doses of sparteine can cause extreme excitement or hallucinations. It is also said to be the reason why witches are flying astride broomsticks.

Beer is now made from hops, but in the olden days young, supple broom plants were used to flavour the beer and enhance the tipsy mood. Tea made from the yellow flowers was often used as a diuretic. In esoteric rituals, the broom plant is used for purification and prayers for personal safety, and is said to be particularly powerful against poltergeists. It is also said that throwing the branches of the broom plant causes wind, while burning them and burying them in the earth quiets the wind.

The spirits leave their bodies and embark on a journey. Druids (Ref2) and shamans call this 'the journey to the underworld', and the broom plant is a symbol of such a journey. Anyway, with its remarkable healing properties and narcotic-like effects, the broom plant has long been associated with healers, sorcerers, witches and shamans.

For the Celts, the month that the broom plant governs, which marks the end of the year, is a time to store up for the winter, sweep the house clean and hope that miscellaneous thoughts and bad habits will leave the house. In a nutshell, the enithid symbolises the virtue of keeping one's behaviour clean. It also teaches us to pay close attention to the dreams we have while sleeping at night.

普通種のエニシダ(英:ﾌﾞﾙｰﾑ) はヨーロッパの湿地帯ではどこにでも生えている。高山の山頂から低地の低木林や荒野まで、荒々しいむきだしの大地に雨風をしのぐ仮の宿を提供しながら平然と生育している。見た目は繊細だが、長くまっすぐな茎は丈夫でしなやかで、風で折れることはない。その名が示すように、ほうき(英:ﾌﾞﾙｰﾑ)の材料として使われる。また、エニシダは古くから薬草としても重宝されてきた。中世のイギリスでは、王族が酒を飲んで歌い騒ぎ、放蕩した後の薬として使っていた。寒さが厳しく室内で過ごす時間の長い11月は浮かれ騒ぐよりほかになかったからだ。

薬草の効能については、古代ケルトの文献にもそれを裏書きする記述が見られる。そもそもオガム表記のNgetlは「医者の力」を意味するパナケア(panacea) を表しす。エニシダの最も重要な成分はスパルテイン（アルカロイド）である。スパルテインを大量に摂取すると、極度の興奮や幻覚を引き起こすことがあるため、エニシダを魔女と結びつける人もいる。また、魔女がほうきにまたがって空を飛ぶのもこのためだと言われている。

現在、ビールはホップから作られているが、昔は若くてしなやかなエニシダがビールの風味付けやほろ酔い気分を高めるために使われていた。黄色い花で入れたお茶は利尿剤としてよく使われた。密教の儀式では、エニシダは浄化や身の安全を祈願するために使われ、特にポルターガイストに対して威力を発揮すると言われている。また、エニシダの枝を投げると風が吹き、燃やして土に埋めると風が静まると言われている。

魂は肉体を離れ、旅に出る。ドルイド（参照2）やシャーマンはこれを「冥界への旅」と呼び、エニシダはそうした旅の象徴である。いずれにせよ、エニシダには驚くべきヒーリング (癒し) 作用と麻薬のような効果があるため、長い間、ヒーラー、魔術師、魔女やシャーマンと縁の深い植物なのだ。

ケルト人にとって1年の締めくくりにあたる、エニシダがつかさどる月は、冬に備えて貯え、家の中を綺麗に掃き清め、雑念や悪習に退場を願う時期に当たる。一言でいえば、エニシダは自分の行動を綺麗に保つことの美徳を象徴している。そして、夜寝ている間に見る夢に細心の注意を払うようにという教えでもある。

Disclaimer : I only studied Japanese for a little while. AA dialogue is pretty simple though. Also English isn't my native language either. Feel free to correct me on anything wrong here. Also note that I'm not trying to make the translations sound natural, I'm mostly trying to explain what the words are saying, sometimes I'll be more literal than others. Translation =/= localization. Paups そうね。ヒメコったら‥‥テヘッ☆ Sou ne. Himekotara... tehe☆ I suppose… If they were me, then… blush

Edgeworth キミはヒカルくんの ガールフレンドだと聞いているが。 Kimi wa Hikaru-kun no gaarufurendo da to kiite iru ga. I believe you said that you are Lance's girlfriend when we first met, correct?

Paups ええ。そうですけど‥‥。あの！ けっして恋人同士ってワケじゃ！ Ee. Sou desu kedo... Ano! Kesshite koibito doushi tte wake ja! Yes, I am, but… Oh! It's not like we both think of each other as lovers! でも、この指輪のブレゼントは、 ただのトモダチじゃないから‥‥？ Demo, kono yubiwa no purezento wa, tada no tomodachi ja nai kara...? Lit: Unrequired love, lovers, you haven't made an establishment clearly uh. Comprehensible: (whether it's) Unrequired love, (or whether you're) lovers, you haven't established it clearly uh. Edgeworth 設定‥‥？ Settei...? "Decided"…? Shouldn't the parties involved naturally just know…? Established...? (lt: Establishment...?) A lot is added in the ENG. Quite honestly, the first time I experienced this dialogue (in English), I didn't think much of it. I saw it as Edgeworth thinking something like 'How in tarnation don't you know whether you're together ot not?' Shouldn't you know?' That was my own reaction in the first place. I thought it was saying more about Paups' lovesick character than anything else. But the JP with its brevity made me question if that was the original meaning. He sounds confused. Still, I'm not quite sure. I would say in general though, it makes sense that in his mind, you don't have to actually communicate by talking about your feelings. He is pretty bad at it in the first place... communicating what he feels, I mean. He tends to talk around things, he's a bit roundabout. He tries to say 'thank you' to express his gratefulness, doesn't really work, and is far more successful at showing appreciation when he says stuff like 'A man appeared and stood fast against that selfish me' (ending of 2-4), such a thing just works better for him. He's stating the facts, but not his feelings themselves. That man appeared and stood fast -> it's a simple fact. He doesn't say anything about how that made him feel. When he tries, he feels awkward, foolish. Something that doesn't suit him.

Paups お父さんが、天野河さんの 会社で働いていたから‥‥ Otousan ga, Amanogawa-san no kaisha de hatte ita kara... My father used to work for Mr. Amano.

ヒカルくんとは、幼なじみなんです。 ‥‥キャッ！　言っちゃった！ Hikaru-kun to wa, osananajimi nan desu. ...Kyaa! Icchatta! And so, Lance and I grew up together. …gasp! I said it out loud! Lance and I, we were childhood friends. ....Ahhh! I said it! Note that 'osananajimi', 'childhood friends', is the term used for Edgeworth and Phoenix's relationship in the JP version.

Edgeworth （そんなに、 　恥ずかしがることだろうか？） (Sonna ni, hazukashigaru koto darou ka?) (I don't see how that's anything to be embarrassed about…) Such a thing, is it something to be embarassed about? 'Darou ka' can be translated in many ways. 'I wonder if...' 'is it so', for example. Basically it expresses something akin to uncertainty. EDIT - a correction: 'sonna ni' actually means 'like that, to that extent, so much, to that point, to such a degree' So it can be translated in many ways: (To that point), is it something to be (so) embarassed about? Is it something to be embarassed about to that extent? Is it something to be so embarassed about? This last part is the most hilarious to me. He doesn't think it's something someone should be embarassed about, but he's also kind of uncertain. 'Wait, is it? Is it though? Am I missing something?' Kinda seems like Edgeworth is very confused. 'Should you be embarassed for such a thing? Is it supposed to be embarassing? I wonder if it's an embarassing thing?' And the maybe inner : 'Should I be embarassed about such a thing?' It's probably insignificant beyond showing Edgeworth's apparent obliviousness to other people's feelings and general misunderstanding of how some people perceive and experience romantic relationships, but it did earn a chuckle from me. So I thought I'd share.
