Monday, 22 February 1830
8 25/60
1 3/4
Fahrenheit 40° at 8 3/4 – no motion – Read from page 172 to 248 volume 3 Captain Hall’s America – and breakfast in 1/2 hour over at 11 – from then to 1 50/60 making out Debitor side of foreign cash for last year – note from Miss Poore dated yesterday asking me for this evening are they are they going to “have a few friends” – begs me to go “quite early” – waited for my aunt 10 minutes and out at 2 1/2 – drove to the bois de B– (Boulogne) my usual walk in 1 3/4 hour – back at 5 – felt sleepy and tired – a little nap in my chair – then read a little of Galignani with which were brought the card of “Monsieur and Madame Hamilton Hamilton Rue Matignon no. 10 Faubourg St. Honoré” and civil little note from Mrs H– (Hamilton) apologising for not having sooner given me Miss Mac K–‘s (MacKenzie’s) address “Miss MacKenzie to the care of Messieurs Cotterell and co[mpany] Vittoria Naples”, and card “Mrs Basil Hall (and written) Miss Hall Hotel des Iles Britanniques Rue de la Paix no. 5” Dinner at 6 10/60 – came to my room at 7 50/60 dressed – had Forest at 8 1/4 – coffee –
off to the Poores’ at 9 25/60 – about a dozen people there – talked to Nora Lady P and Sir Edward – promised to take Miss P– (Poore) to the military mass at Vincennes (at 10 a.m.) next Sunday – then at 10 1/2 to Lady Vavasour’s – fewer people than usual – Lady Style dining at the embassy – Lady Ogelvie and her son and Mr Poore (cousin to Sir Edward?) came by and by from the Poores’ but did not stay long – probably they thought a queer set – played 2 games at Écarté with Mrs Balfour and her sister Mrs Wilson to whom Lady V– (Vavasour) introduced me – not at my request – at Mrs Balfour’s – I would rather not – know nothing about them– but after what was said cannot be off calling no. 20 or 21 rue de la Paix – It seems they 600/. a month for the 3ieme – Lady V– (Vavasour) will only receive twice more – then going to Ireland from what she said it would appear that it would on account of her own property there – Sir Henry and the children going to Marseilles, and Miss Vavasour to be left with an officer’s widow (Mrs Hoffman?) who wishes to taking young ladies, – but Miss V– (Vavasour) to be with her en arrive –
home at 12 5/60 – musing about inviting the Drozs tomorrow and Mr Charles Stuart wrote copy of little note to the latter – Soft spring like day – a little drizzling rain when we went out and part of the time in the bois de B– (Boulogne) – but fineish day on the whole – Fahrenheit 40° at 8 3/4, 44° at 2 p.m. and 44° at 1 1/4 tonight –
