whenever I listen to play dirty I experience an aggressive mental montage of kaey vs wystan vs aleksey and it is such a badass fucking vibe and I live for it

you should probably run for your life / you should probably cover your eyes / you should start rehearsing your lines

but ultimately it leads me back to the conclusion that wystan is the one who takes aleksey out, with kaeys help. wystan seeks him out to call a truce so they can end it at last. then, when aleksey is gone, they part ways.

thinking about the hero having the villain at gunpoint and the villain says they'll never do it and the hero puts the gun down

if kaey had a gun to alekseys head aleksey would challenge him to pull the trigger. says that by pulling the trigger he'd finally make him proud, finally prove himself. says he's weak if he doesn't, how he's always been weak.

and kaey does put the gun down. because he isn't aleksey. because pulling the trigger would provide validity to everything he had survived. because if he killed aleksey then he'd still be under his control. he'd prove him right. and he doesn't want aleksey to be proud of him, ever. he doesn't want to be aleksey, in fact dreads that ever being the truth.

but aleksey knew exactly what to say to make kaey hesitate, too. he knew exactly what would push his buttons. and he knew what would inspire the good part of kaey. because on one hand, kaey pulls the trigger and proves him right and he forever has that hold on him. on the other, he lives and kaey survives in fear, in fact knows kaey will mull over the decision to a point of obsession, worrying he made the wrong one. worrying what it says about himself.

but kaey will never pull the trigger. no matter what aleksey says or does. because that's not him. because to reach this point kaey had to come to the realization that he is not aleksey, and come to terms with how it would all end. aleksey does not get to claim him. he is not a painting signed by him, or a weapon forged by him. he exists with or without aleksey. he is a person who has survived, not because of or in spite of aleksey, but because that's what he does. at that point, all he needs to do is get aleksey to leave him alone. at that point, he can almost forgive aleksey enough to let things be.

aleksey thinks he won. until he realizes that, for once, kaey has played a step ahead of him. kaey may be able to come to peace with what happened to him and move on, but it isn't his place to enact justice for others. he knows aleksey. he knows all the suffering and chaos he has caused. and he knows he has enemies in abundance. of everything kaey wanted... he can at least make aleksey pay for what he did. but not in an act of revenge, no. just letting karma come back around. aleksey gets what was coming to him, and what would have come for him whether kaey was alive / involved or not.

kaey removes himself from the narrative. from alekseys narrative. he closes the book without reading the ending, because he doesn't care to find out. he puts the gun down and walks away. and aleksey never saw that coming; putting the gun down, yes, but walking away? kaey refuses to play his game, refuses to play into his hands, and leaves the board for player 2.

I think the canon will always be kaey and wystan setting their differences aside to see an end to aleksey. kaey walks away from the gameboard and wystan sits down, and aleksey is confused because this isn't how the game is supposed to go. and wystan is happy to make him suffer. and kaey is okay leaving that in his hands.

idk where I was going with this ramble but I was having emotions about kaey in that situation so. yeah. also that situation may be a cliche but I think it's sexy if there are dynamic reasons for the decision other than the hero being a goody goody and consequences are enacted instead of the villain getting the upper hand.

ultimately kaeys narrative is one of perseverance, acceptance, and self-forgiveness. because those are things I want to find within my real life narrative tbh. anyway. having emotions don't mind me !
