' he bows , head lowered as his arm sweeps out , before he disappears in a puff of smoke.

there's a sense of disquiet within him , almost a feeling of injustice. here ran is , all in , and she doesn't know his name , his goals , the reason for all of this. she knows him , his heart , but that's still only part of the picture , and ran deserves to know the rest. even if it changes her mind , even if it doesn't. ( as long as she doesn't pity him , he'll take any reaction ).

his grip on hers tightens , just a little. ( he's never had to say the words out loud. everyone who knows already knew without him speaking it. everyone who doesn't know ... he'd never say a word ). and , although she's been one of the few who has come closest to arresting him ( has now , he can admit to himself , caught him in all the ways that matter ) , he can't just tell her to deduce the whole story herself. even if he's sure she already knows part of it , brilliant as she is.

' my name , ' he says slowly , unintentional weight given to the words , ' is kuroba kaito. ' you've already had the ability to put me away , he doesn't say , but now you have the shining jewel. ' my father was kuroba tōichi , my predecessor and creator of the kaitō kid role. he was ... ' kaito lets his voice halter , his gaze lowering , the wound still bleeding even after all of these years. would still be , until the time he takes down the organisation and destroy pandora. Some people, she's learned - think first, think fast, rational from start to finish. Ran herself operates on similar parallels, believes in watching and waiting. But what DOESN'T MAKE SENSE - what doesn't add up, it doesn't scare her, somehow. She wonders - does he realize that in the time they've known each other, he's let her SEE him? He must, being who he is, doing what he does - not just as Kid, but one of the greatest magicians their time has to offer. Redirection, misdirection, control, and YET - bit by bit, piece by piece, he's given her a whole to turn over. She knows the answer to WHY, even if she can't answer to how, or to what end - but, that's all that's important, perhaps.

(Perhaps, she doesn't mind loving, the same way she never minded crying.)

Her touch gains a little more weight, still light against his trembling hand, their palms slipping past each other's, her fingers tangling lightly with his. "Okay," she echoes, her own voice low and soft, her gaze level and even on his face. "...We're okay. So it's okay."

It feels silly but sacred to say - like they're giving each other permission for now not to think about the other things that they'll one day have to sort through to talk about what they want. But - she thinks about the courage he must have had to draw out of himself, feels a faint, quiet splash of pride. It's hard to be loved and hard to love, too. Even without everything that they carry on their shoulders. She's seen it many, MANY TIMES - and somehow loving is never not like handing someone a knife, and being loved is never not like baring your throat.

' haaaa ? ' even before the syllable leaves his lips , he's well aware that he's becoming way too comfortable with ran. his reaction is real , unlike the manufactured perfection and politeness that kid would say in response instead. ( he's realising it's been happening more and more recently , ever since they had begun speaking more after some of his heists. it's almost scary how quickly he's been relaxing kid around her. ). he stares at her over his cup of coffee ( iced and black ) , unsure of what he heard ( asking him to fake a relationship with her ) was real or not.

@pctaldrunk claps her hands together as she says , " please say you'll do it so they'll finally stop harassing me to find someone. " ( so , clearly not hallucinating. but then ... ).

' what about your heisei holmes-kun ? ' he asks. he had thought the two of them were together , or , at the very least , crushing on each other. unless he was severely wrong on the state of their feelings , there was no way he was getting in the middle of this because it was going to end in tears. probably his own. after all , kudō would no doubt murder him. ' he's back in japan , and i thought you two were together ? '

there had been a very large part of him that had assumed that she would be affronted by his latest gesture , react in some way that kid could laugh off and then disappear soon after. as such , there's a very large part of him completely surprised when she brushes past him ( and doesn't even attack him ! ) to sit on the counter and lifting her leg in a clear gesture of " for you ". calling him on his " bluff " , despite the fact that he meant it genuinely ? perhaps.

still , she's taking the offer , and he has to pause for just a moment to accept that this was his life before , with the heels still in his hands , moving closer to her.

he bends down a little , not as far as he'd have to go if she kept her leg hanging down off the counter , and gently grasps her foot to guide her foot inside the sole of the heel before strapping her in it. it's a fairly clunky clasp , but with his dexterity , it doesn't take even a second to fasten. once she was in one heel , ran lifted up the other leg for him , and he rather quickly put the other heel on.

curious as to what the reaction would be ( and half-assuming what the reaction would be ) , kid starts to move back after finishing , but like a tiger pouncing on its prey , ran locks her legs behind him , keeping him trapped. a small grin can't help but blossom on his face , even if he should be panicking. ( why isn't he panicking ? ). ' instinct , my lady ? '

"Happy birthday," Shinichi says, handing him an elegant looking gift which might contain an expensive, silver watch . "It's for you ." .For KID!

he's well aware that he's running out of time , considering that aoko is going to expect him to be home in about twenty minutes for them to finally cut his ice cream cake. plans a through f didn't exactly go as planned , which wasn't a surprise considering that the detective was here , but it was still vaguely annoying as much as it was exhilarating. he's in the midst of checking the jewel when he hears the door open behind him. quiet , with no yelling attached , which meant that it wasn't nakamori-keibu. based on the gait ... the detective , which could be fun or could be terrible. usually a mixture of both.

using the mirror in his monocle , he notices that the detective looks oddly hesitant for once. deciding he could wait for a few moments , kid steps down ( the jewel was not pandora , unfortunately ) from the ledge and towards the detective. he notices the box that the other had in his hand , wrapped , and if he wasn't wearing kid's unflappable mask , his eyebrows would have furrowed in confusion. it looked very much like a birthday gift , but that can't be right , right ?

apparently determined to prove him wrong , the detective holds out the giftbox to him. " happy birthday. it's for you , " he says. a poof of smoke , and kid has traded the gift for the jewel that he had taken , and there's a small smile , the sincerity true for a moment before he masks it with a teasing smile , on his face.

' you're a tad bit late -- my birthday was on june 10th , but i suppose it's not your fault as i didn't hold a heist until now , ' kid says , using kid's first ever appearance as his birthdate. ' but thank you , meitantei. ' as he gives his gratitude , he moves back to the ledge of the building. ' please express my apologies to the inspector for being unable to stay around for his care. let us meet under the moonlight again. '

with a careless wave , kid drops off the roof before engaging his hang glider. he eyes the present thoughtfully. well , he's going to have to delay a little bit to check the box for bugs and/or trackers , but ... still. sweeter than he thought from the detective. ( although , he definitely wondered if the detective knew his birthday or if this was for kid. ).

' a jewel with mysterious origins seemed to be a prime candidate for pandora , but as he glances through the jewel into the moonlight , he sees no red in its depths. another failure. ' however , this doesn't seem to be what i'm looking for , so the prize is yours. ' he regards the woman with a considering look before kid smiles , sharp around the edges. ' still , i would rather not take the blame if the jewel isn't returned. would you mind rescheduling for a different time ? '

he moves through the kudō house much like his namesake ( like a phantom , with silent footsteps ). while kudō didn't go to every heist that kid hosts , this had been one hosted by suzuki-jii-san , and kudō tends to go to those. as such , he decided to check in on the detective , just to make sure that he wasn't in over his head on another case. the mansion was silent , and he debates about leaving a small gift of sorts when he makes his way into kudō's bedroom. the other was asleep in bed , but the tissues surrounding him told a specific story. he creeps closer to stand at his bedside as his hand leaves his glove.

the back of his hand touches a too hot forehead , and he muses quietly out loud ( slightly teasing ) , ' hm , i suppose this counts as a good enough excuse to miss tonight's heist. ' in the next moment , his hand leaves kudō's forehead and he slips his glove back on. seeing kudō's eyes slightly open , him stirring after his touch has left his forehead , he asks , not really expecting an answer , ' have you taken any medication ? drunk any water ? eaten anything ? '

🖤 BLACK HEART — what would you say is the darkest thought you've ever experienced? what do you think caused you to have that thought? have you ever planned on or fantasized about acting on it?

' ... i've thought about killing snake. ' moonlight. a loud gunshot. an affable voice ( " good evening , kid ! although , wouldn't it be better if i called you kuroba tōichi , hm ? " ). red hot rage. ( you were right all along. you knew it had been sabotage , had known about it since the moment you woke up in the hospital to your mother's tears. it was vindication , but it was clawing , choking. you want nothing more than to -- ). ' he killed my dad , of course i wanted to kill him. but , no , i'm not planning on doing it. ' hasn't stopped him from dreaming about it , seeing how his blood would feel , how to freeze the scared look on his face. it makes him sick. at least he knows he hasn't gone too far.

🧪 TEST TUBE — if you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what is one thing you absolutely have to resolve and/or do before then?

' taking down the organisation who killed my father , of course. ' it's been slow , gathering evidence , using himself as bait. if he knew he was going to die tomorrow ... ' i'd take the information that i've gathered and burn it to the ground. metaphorically , that is. no use in hiding in the shadows when a spotlight hits , after all. ' pandora was important , but the organisation needed to be taken down.

✍️ WRITING HAND — what is one thing you wish you were better at? this can be a tactical skill, social skill, hobby, etc.

' ah ... probably being more emotionally open when i need to be. ' he rubs the back of his neck , wearing a sheepish expression on his face. ' honestly , i only really had aoko as a friend growing up , still kinda do , and the two of us ... aren't really like that. i love her dearly , but , yeah ... '

there are very few things that could cause kid's expression ( his pokerface ) to crack. an artform he's perfected over the years ; it's a masterpiece with rather few flaws. but this ? this in front of him , this illusion , this visage , is one of them.

a breath catches in his throat , and in the span of a few seconds , he's already gripped the ( fake fake fake fake fake it has to be , it can't be real , he wouldn't lie like this , no , kid is one thing , but this ... this -- ) collar of the man in front of him , eyes ... expression dark.

( this is madness , this is insanity brought to the surface uncontrolled ; this is darkness. oh , did you think kaito could remain innocent after years of being kid ? of being shot at , of having to hide , to fear for his life ? oh no , such experiences can twist , darken , the lightest of souls , and kaito's soul has never been too light to begin with. ).

with one hand , knuckles white , gripping the man's collar , the other hand reaches out to rip the mask but ( no , this is human , this is warm , this is blood rolling down from the scratches and down his cheek and down his hand and oh god he did , he did lie , this is blood , this is your father's blood on your hands ). his hand drops , his arms limp. he can't breath , can't focus , vision turning dark on the corners.
