he feels absolutely wrong-footed , like he's been sideswiped by a car that just drives on by. it's starting to happen more and more around kudō , and he isn't too fond of it. first , kudō gives him his father's case files on his father. then , kudō says that he trusts him. ( trusts him to survive dangerous situations , sure. he remembers how little -- not at all -- he seemed to be worried after kaito had disguised as sherry. trusts him with this ? whatever " this " is ? he wouldn't have thought it was true at all. ). then kudō says he understands how much of a charmer his alter ego is ?

kaito is perplexed and thrown , and he doesn't like it. he finds himself even unable to react to the idea ( joke ? ) that heartbreak was part of the gift ( that kudō knows this would hurt but knows that this would help as well. merde , was he really so obvious ? ). it's why , even though he would normally stick around to annoy kudō some more , he actually does as kudō asks and leaves. one moment , he's standing in front of kudō , still poleaxed. the next , it's as if he was never even there. ( no misdirection , no smoke bomb. just gone. just like a ghost he pretends to be. ).

shinichi feels a mixture of amusement and incredulity at the obvious way kaito holds himself back from prying, feeling somewhat like a parent whose child had managed not to eat all the cookies in the tin. “you could look, you know. even for you, it’d be hard to return the file to where it belongs if you refuse to case the place. i’m giving you permission to. because i, for some reason, trust you.”

said reason is inextricably linked to the connection between their fathers, whose privacy shinichi doesn’t hesitate to infringe upon. his father was both a good judge of character and also not a fool, so yūsaku having trusted tōichi is as good a guarantee as any for shinichi to trust kaito. it was only logical.

when the door is safely shut, shinichi leans against an adjacent wall with an innocent look on his face. he grins, “i was just trying to make it a little more challenging. i didn’t expect you to ignore the room, y’know?” there’s no sign beyond an outward exhale, but shinichi feels a curl of relief settling in his chest. that kaito would stop himself from looking, just because of a sign of hesitation from shinichi, only cements his decision to place his faith in kaito. he hums, a little thoughtful, a little amused. “huh. i kind of understand why kaitō kid’s known for being a charmer now.”

kaito’s question draws him up short. it’s a night for the unexpected, it seems, and shinichi is starting to see the appeal of taking people by surprise the way kaitō kid does. it provides for vastly more entertaining responses, for one. shinichi raises an eyebrow, waving him off. “weren’t you paying attention? part one was the heartbreak, obviously.” he nods in the general direction of the study. “now get out of my house, and don’t make it my problem if you break in again.”

there’s  a  part  of  him  that  had  hoped  that  aoko  was  never  going  to  learn  the  truth  ,  just  as  there  had  been  a  part  of  him  that  knew  that  he  couldn’t  keep  it  hidden  from  her  for  long.  he’d  know  that  it  would  ...  hurt  ,  because  kaito’s  been  lying  to  her  ,  because  she’d  have  to  choose  between  turning  kaito  in  and  lying  to  her  dad  ,  and  he  wanted  to  spare  her  from  that  pain  for  as  long  as  possible  ,  knowing  that  delaying  it  would  only  make  it  worse.  

he  had  closed  his  eyes  and  just  taken  it  when  she  was  hitting  him  because  he  knew  he  deserved  it  ,  but  it’s  because  of  the  fact  that  he  closed  his  eyes  that  it  surprised  him  to  hear  the  clatter  of  the  mop  and  the  feeling  of  her  arms  around  him.  automatically  ,  unconsciously  ,  he  ducked  his  head  into  her  shoulder  ,  the  scent  of  strawberry  and  vanilla  strong  in  his  nose.  he  clings  back  ,  arms  circling  around  her  waist  as  he  sighs.

‘  i  try  ,  ’  kaito  says  ,  and  it  is  the  truth.  kevlar  lining  his  suits  ,  making  sure  that  he  wears  a  vest  when  he  knows  snake  and  his  men  are  going  to  show  up  ,  even  if  it  still  fit  awkwardly  on  him  (  made  for  his  dad  rather  than  him  ).  ‘  i’m  sorry  ,  aoko.  ’

these puerile rebukes , perhaps he should have anticipated them , accompanied by a rather startled - almost offended contortion of his brow - all but downright shaking his first at saguru is disapproval . " have you given me sufficient reason to ? " his answer is without censure in spite of kaito's reaction , a casual tilt of the head - a subtle quirk of the upper lip , nothing too expressive . after all , it was not as if he had escaped the detective's scrutiny .

kaito  rolls  his  eyes  ,  tapping  against  hakuba’s  desk  impatiently  upon  the  answer.  ‘  i’m  talking  a  matter  of  life  and  death  here  ,  y’know.  ’  as  in  ,  kaito  will  die  if  he  doesn’t  get  hakuba  to  the  party  aoko  wants  to  throw  for  him  in  celebration  (  for  what  ,  exactly  ,  kaito  zoned  out  on  ).  he’s  still  not  sure  how  he’s  going  to  get  hakuba  anywhere  near  his  house  (  because  for  some  reason  ,  aoko  decided  that  kaito’s  place  was  the  perfect  place  to  throw  the  party  )  without  telling  him  the  reason  why  ,  which  he  is  forbidden  to  do  ,  for...  well  ,  the  exact  reason  hakuba  just  detailed  out.
