thoughts on girldad dick grayson? god it holds such a special place in my heart i could talk about it for agess! also i think dick wanting to start a family eventually but his life always being too "unstable" is really interesting. dc had SO MANY opportunities to give this man a daughter but its only canon in elseworlds! i dont wanna take away from roys whole shtick but dick having daughters would be such a fun direction to go in if its written while. like he would definitely mess up and have a lot of problems but he would love with his whole heart. a fic ive always wanted to read is a different ending with sophia or even dick getting to keep the grayson desert baby and raising it like ahhh chewing on my nails.

ur gonna wanna kill me for this but in most of my imaginings before n52, a biological daughter is not in the cards for dick. one of my fav headcanons for dick is long-term consequences of being at ground zero during chemo (briefly talk about this here). so, a possible consequence for that is sterility. i need him to have crazy feelings about being the last flying grayson.

but to answer your question properly, i think dick adopting a girl could be soooo interesting if done by someone other than taylor (olivia desmond who). just look at how hard his dynamic goes with sophia tevis.

if we veer into headcanon territory for this:

one of my fav ideas would be dick keeping in touch with sophia after blüdhaven got nuked (briefly talk about this here). possibly during the one year later arc... maybe he takes sophia to new york with him (instead of his no stakes arc of being on yachts with tim & bruce lol). he doesn't send her to boarding school immediately and instead, they spend time trying to recover from the shit-show their lives have been recently.

oooh, maybe a rlly fun arc where sophia gets past her hero worship/crush and properly considers dick's role in what happened to her family... which wars with how much she knows he cares about her (how he visited her at the halfway house, how he saved her from chemo, how he made sure she healed from the radiation). shared grief over how their fathers loved them but often failed them.

you can have some great rose stuff here too. instead of joining the teen titans, she follows dick to new york and ends up becoming a regular presence in his shitty little apartment where she bullies dick about how he lives. she gets to know sophia and comes to care for her. maybe a kidnapping plot where she's the one who saves sophia from some mobsters who didn't get the tevis family memo.

a lot of bullying from the og titans (esp donna and roy who are also in new york) about dick essentially parenting two teenage girls. at dick's insistence, rose hesitantly reaches out to people she sort of let down during her evil era but only after she pulls an uno reverse on dick saying she'll only do it if he does it. she mocks him a lot by calling him 'renegade'. it never fails to make sophia laugh who calls him 'crutches' occasionally too.

sophia eventually joins a public high school in new york. dick and rose make rlly embarrassing banners for her graduation only for sophia to mock them saying wow look at how much you care... aren't you embarrassed?

also, i love the desert baby arc soooo much but i think the weight of dick saving this little girl + all the costs he bore to make that happen... is much more impactful if he never meets her again. maybe he does occasionally check up on how she's doing (is she loved? is she safe?) but only from a distance. the people who adopt her often get random tidbits of information about raising a meta-human and the family collectively refers to dick as their guardian angel.

i would be remiss if i didn't mention mar'i grayson bc she had me hooked with just that cameo in titans '99.

carlisle and rosalie is a suuuuper interesting relationship because they sure as hell did not get off to a great start. I kind of wish the books (especially midnight sun) explored this a bit more because edward and bella both view carlisle as this saintly, can-do-no-wrong figure up on a pedestal of Perfect Kindness, and we never really get another perspective except for what little rosalie tells bella in eclipse.

but changing rosalie ""for edward"" (and ymmv on exactly how much that was a factor, because we never actually hear about this from carlisle's pov) is pretty icky. and I personally don't even read it as, like, he found a girl dying in the street and went "hmmm she looks hot let's bring her home as A Mate For My Son and never give her a choice about that," which seems to be a fairly popular interpretation among people who don't like carlisle (note that in eclipse, rose explicitly states it was up to her whether or not to stay with the cullens.) I see it more as "he changed this girl without thinking about it because he couldn't bear to see her die, and later the similarity to how he'd changed esme struck him and his brain went, 'hmm...what if?'" which strikes me as a normal thing to have a few brief thoughts about, but not a good thought to cling to after rosalie woke up and it became clear how miserable she was as a vampire.

but just because it’s normal doesn’t mean it isn’t also kinda fucked up to immediately start thinking of a rape survivor as Potential Romantic Object For Son. like, those two things can be true simultaneously. it doesn’t mean carlisle is Secretly A Horrible Person or anything, just that he’s not in fact an infallibly perfect saint of kindness.

so I think rosalie’s anger at him is entirely justified, even though I myself would feel very differently about being a vampire in her situation. I wish we got more of a look at the post-rose/pre-emmett era, when it was just her and edward constantly butting heads! I always got the sense that a lot of edward’s issues with her stem from her refusal to worship carlisle the way he does.

the emmett flashback in MS basically tells us that rosalie didn't forgive carlisle for changing her until he agreed to change emmett—the passage where edward realizes just how far carlisle would go to make rosalie happy (or depending on your pov, how far he'd go out of guilt) is really interesting to me.

carlisle got improbably lucky with his first two "creations—" a Perfect Son who worshipped him and a Perfect Wife who had secretly already pined for him for years, both of whom were willing and eager (edward's Murder Rumspringa notwithstanding lmao) to follow his weirdass animal blood diet. he was probably feeling pretty good by the time he changed rosalie (once lucky, twice confident, y’know?) it must have been a rude awakening to realize that however noble his intentions, his choice to save her went against her wishes and made her miserable. 

I’m sure it made him sad that she would rather have died, especially once he came to love her as a daughter. and then there was that parental frustration of “why can’t my kids get along?? they’re both so great!!” 

I also bet rosalie’s longing for her lost humanity and a nuclear family with biological kids reawakened his own (and esme’s) feelings along those lines. I think it’s interesting that carlisle longs to be human, too. not in the despairing way rosalie does, but enough to empathize. maybe they bonded over that at some point.

because by the time twilight rolls around, they’re cool. I find it especially telling that in midnight sun, rosalie was 100% ready to kill bella but then (notably unlike jasper) backed down the second carlisle said no. it shows that she really does see him as a parent. it makes sense for her character to want to cling to those “human nuclear family” roles the cullens have implausibly adopted.

and, circling back to emmett, his change being the thing that helps rosalie forgive carlisle also makes sense. because suddenly, rose is in his shoes. she’s directly confronted with a dying person who can only be saved by Emergency Vampirization, and she makes the same choice carlisle did—arguably for more selfish reasons!

so I’m sure they had a heart-to-heart after that, with carlisle (hopefully) apologizing again and reassuring rosalie that she made the right choice.

even then, I think deep down there’s always gonna be some part of rose that resents him. sure, she’s got her happyish ending with emmett and her consolation prize with renesmee, but it’s clear in eclipse that although she’s forgiven him, she hasn’t forgotten.

and I mean, that’s fairly true to life. everyone’s parents fuck them up somehow, whether in little ways or big ways, and a lot of people still manage to make peace with them. it almost makes carlisle’s and rosalie’s found-family bond more impressive, because they had to consciously work through their issues and maintain it. 

and once you get past those issues, there’s tons of stuff for them to bond over. they’re both very intellectually-inclined people, and I’m sure carlisle admired rosalie’s pursuit of all her degrees and impressive mechanical knowledge. she’s much fiercer than carlisle (or edward or esme,) good in a crisis, and better at making tough decisions, which is something they sorely needed (especially pre-jasper.) and I suspect rosalie admires carlisle’s patience and (secretly) his optimism, two things that don’t come naturally to her. in short, they’re a good balance for each other.

Hey there, Lisa! Thank you for sendin’ this in. It’s completely a’ight and I appreciate you reading through the headcanons (There is a lot and I’m really sorry, I just can’t shut up). By all means, anything you can send is great since any theme and word can lead to so many write-ups. Even a simple word like “red” could have several different headcanons, drabbles, and metas written around it for a character. It’s all about how the receiver interprets it–!

Preface: I am going to be generalize “by blood” family to first-determined family. This is directly acknowledging family situations that do not have all blood-relations, but are considered the “first” family the child is conditioned into. After all, Sophie isn’t from a nuclear family situation with a stepmother and half-sister. And also she’s technically the ‘mom’ since she raised Lettie and Martha and even her stepmom acknowledges that, don’t @ me. 

FAMILY. Howl’s Moving Castle is a novel following fairy tale tropes and creating subversions, if not adding realistic reactions, for those who live in those tropes would face. While we may find Ingary to be a world that is capable of having so much magic and remarkable things in it from Seven League Boots to Cloaks of Invisibility, it is still very much a world full of monotonous, if not limiting, things that exist and happen.

One of those “monotonous” things happens to be the life of Sophie Hatter. While the book directly states that the evil stepmother trope is not all applicable to the Hatters, and how the evil/ugly stepsisters trope is far from applicable to the older Hatter daughters, there is a very apparent truth about the family arrangement that fits and happens too commonly in our world. At its basis, it is the case of "eldest daughter syndrome” for Sophie. 

But, there’s more at the root of Howl’s Moving Castle. This novel explores family structure, family issues, and the impacts of lacking expectations, support, and stability has onto a young woman. (NOTE: I am including neglect and trauma here because of HMC’s implications and how we’re led up to the mindset and rationalizations of beginning Sophie in the novel, which is very unhealthy/concerning). What happens in this situation is the creation of someone who lives a purposeless life and focuses on the lives and successes of those around her to make herself experience something. She isn’t even being at all materialistic about it -- goodness, the woman just WANTS, an innocent desire, and that is something she knows she can’t ever have.

This can also be applicable for Howl, but his version of the story follows the opposite of what Sophie deals with. In his case, he is the youngest son who has been in a world where stability and expectations fell on him (e.g., he is a doctoral student, an uncle, etc.). His structure is intact and pressure is placed on him. Much like Sophie, there is a dread of unfulfillment and desire that he finds in his life, but unlike her, he happens to do something (hence why he is another world rather than Wales -- read into that and interpret that as you will). 

Both are in roles that do not satisfy and help realize themselves. Sophie makes her role, which is detrimental to her own emotional and mental development. Howl breaks his role, but makes a role for himself, which still doesn’t make him happy. Because, for both, there are still missing elements they need to discover or realize about themselves -- be it through self-awakening or making bonds.

Family, which can be extended now to society and their norms, is an place of origin for most what most begin their socialization, development, and understanding of who they are in context to the world around them. And, in many cases,  first-made family is not idealistic and is not a healthy environment for growth and discovery. They can be toxic, harmful, and traumatic, purposefully or unknowingly, for the impressionable minds by the adults who are preparing for the “real” world and how these individuals are expected to be and expected to do.

Sophie was prevented to participate in that “real” world because she was, essentially, not given any purpose or anything that made her feel qualified or worth living (originally). Instead, she made herself a role that is participating in her family’s world that she could be accepted in -- one where she had to do everything because no one else would, and also, it was a remedy (albeit a terrible one) to combat what she was feeling on the inside. So much of her upbringing informs us of her character and how she sees herself -- as an unremarkable person with nothing out there for her. 

Intentionally or not, as mentioned before, Sophie’s family has taken advantage of this and didn’t raise Sophie to see herself on the same level as her peers (or even help her be aware of her capabilities). Personally, I do view the Hatter’s situation having started as unintentional. However,  it was something comfortable to do (rely on Sophie as if she were an adult) and they continued doing it. More to my characterization, I do believe there IS awareness, hence Martha’s outburst at the beginning of the story -- her opinion on the matter, albeit skewed, still has grounds because she isn’t an outsider. She is someone who was raised and living in the household.

Returning to my point, this buffer is essentially a destruction towards Sophie’s potential and self. It can be seen as both self-destructive by Sophie (she believes the next best course of action is to assure her sisters’ happiness and success) and created by her family (mainly, adults) to benefit what they want. 

Despite that, Howl’s Moving Castle knows that one of her greatest gifts is something she already does for a living: creation. Sophie already creates; she always created hats and outfits, being so advanced at her age that she never needed an apprenticeship to hone her skills. Her products are well sought for, even excluding the magic she accidentally imbues in them. But, her power by hands is also her actual magic (not that everything she says comes true/able to create truths/etc.) Particularly, it is the tenacity and choice to create herself to whoever she wants to be and what she can do.

The problem is that her origins made her believe to be herself incapable of anything and that misfortune was her plotted end. There was no point resisting even if she tried to as a child. Yet, it was that moment when disruption came and she found herself being given a chance to leave, she created her own journey. Though, it was originally to get her curse removed and return to her sisters, she took the first step for more.

She ends up finding herself exploring an avenues of herself that are rarely touched upon or even acknowledged by others. That, of course, changes when in contact with Calcifer, Michael, and Howl. While she might’ve crashed into the castle, dubbed herself the ‘help,’  it was the beginning of her creating herself in a place where she wasn’t restricted or made to believe poorly on herself. 

In the end, she made her family. A family that she knows that is a group of those who are as out of place in this world (or the other world) because of matters out of their control. She makes a family when she decides that she could live happily ever after, a complete contrast to what she originally believed herself for. This family, now different from the one before, is the start of being her feeling found, but also continuing her self-discovery. 

And, Sophie Hatter could not be any happier creating her new life.

so, premise which is Not A Headcanon: jaime is good with children. period. like:

if you read tyrion’s childhood memories it’s obvious that he wasn’t just tolerating him or anything, he actively was involved with him, genuinely loved him and so on, like he was a+++ dean winchester-like lol

if you see how he is with tommen before cersei pretty much forces him to leave because she can’t handle the two of them having a relationship he’s actually great with him, tries to help out as much as he can (JAIME TELLING A KID TO DISSOCIATE IS NOT A GOOD IDEA but thanks for trying) and he honestly does want to have a relationship with him..... except cersei stops him lmao

and that’s without counting the fact that he’s one of the three assholes in these books with a knighthood who gives a fuck about protecting the weak/vulnerable people but nvm that, but tldr: jaime is Good With Kids. he doesn’t have many chances to show it, but he is. 

now, on to your question, going by both modern au and canon:

other people’s kids: tbh he’d be the kind of person you’d wanna leave them with because since again he has no issues relating to them and he’s good with them he’d be the cool uncle/bf down to a t and the fact that they are other people’s would absolutely make things way more relaxed

his own: MORE LOADED QUESTION because a) he already has them but couldn’t father them, b) he comes from a shitty family with a shitty father and doesn’t remember his mother, so if he had kids with someone else first he would freak the fuck out because OH MY GOD CAN I DO THIS AM I GOOD ENOUGH WILL I FUCK THIS UP OR NOT, then after they’re born he’d probably spend three months like ‘oh hell I hope I don’t fuck this up’ and eventually he’d grow into it and do a Great Job Of It

specific headcanons in general:

totally the good cop parent especially if the other is brienne

(I mean brienne would be an a+ parent but I think she’d be the one setting boundaries)

whether the kid is male or female he definitely taught them a few dirty tricks to fight back asses by the time they’re ten

(modern au) I have a hc that tywin is the kind of parent who wants their kids’s room to be always tidy and sparkly clean without stuff around so with his kids he’d totally be the contrary like brienne is the one who has to go like ‘okay it’s been two weeks pUT SOME BASIC ORDER IN YOUR ROOM YOU CAN BARELY WALK IN IT’

totally the kind of person who if the kid in question shows up asking to do something he doesn’t know goes like ‘no idea but we should learn’ (and that’s how he burned a lot of attempts at cookies in modern au)

definitely not the kind of parent who avoids physical contact with his kids or never apologizes to them if he fucks up

in canon brienne definitely would have to sit him down and tell him nicely that going away inside is Not An Option

definitely the kind of person who’ll volunteer to bring your kids or his own to amusement parks/rollercoasters/the likes because he legit has fun doing that (totally into rollercoasters I’ll die on that hill) 

totally helps out with the homework if he knows the subject (or will help friends’s kids with theirs for the same subjects) (in modern au, in canon it can be with maesters’s lessons but we understood the point)

with bronn’s kids if bronn had any... idk bronn would actually be way less terrible at it than people think but he also wouldn’t be such a good cop parent so they’d love him because he’s totally the good cop adult figure

Everything goes well at first, they get to meet alot of Italian music legends and ermal is over the moon

Fabri feels happy too, he loves watching ermal smile brightly whenever somebody approaches them to start a conversation

Thenthe light suddenly dims and the announcer goes “ladies and gentlemen, now’s thetime you have been waiting for”

Uh oh

Fabrialmost runs to the toilet to vomit from the anxiety but ermal catches his handand rubs his thumb soothingly over his knuckles

“we don’thave to do this if you don’t want to, fabri” “but you love dancing… you shouldgo, ermal” “not without you”

Because they’re an adored couple everyone’s eyes are on them, like they’re expecting them to dance

Steeling himself, fabri gets up and goes to the floor, ermal by his side, their hands intertwined

There’re already a few couples dancing so they just try to blend in

emphasis on TRY

because it’s really hard to blend in when you’re two tall, handsome men in a close embrace, awkwardly moving along to the rhythm

ermal has his hand on fabri’s waist to guide him, which is the position they’d practiced in

it’s difficult to move because fabri is too tensed up and he keeps doing exactly the opposite of what he intends to

he steps on ermal again and again and again (ermal laughs at first but his laughter diminishes after a while because that shit actually hurts after a while lol)

“bizio, caro, relax” “i can’t they’re looking at us!!!”

ermal gets an idea, he pulls fabrizio’s head to rest on his shoulder, places his arm around fabri’s back and presses their bodies close, so now he can’t see the audience

He kisses fabri gently on the neck and whispers “just focus on me, nothing else, okay?”

Fabri does that and instantly feels safe, slowly losing himself to the rhythm of the background music, the gentle sways, ermal’s scent 

People are going “awwwwwww” at metamoro slow dancing (me af) and they’re taking photos/videos

Thank god ermal is too engrossed in fabrizio or else ermal ‘put your phones down’ meta will attack

Somewhere along the way the music changes to an upbeat one and the alcohol’s starting to kick in so they end up pulling crazy moves which make them look like old dads in love

They go home tired as hell but most importantly they had fun

Eversince then, whenever fabrizio’s just roaming the house ermal would surprise him with a dance, taking his hand and spin him round

“Come on, you have to practise for anita’s father-daughter dance you know” “ermal she’s 5″ “so you have 20 something years to practise then, good that i’ll be here forever” and he smiles so cheekily fabri kisses him because that’s essentially a confession okay 

Sometimes anita and libero join and they’re like a big ball of humans prancing around the living room

ermalwill also do weird dance moves that are in trend just to confuse fabrizio, like, he’llgo “hey fabri look at this!” and whips a naenae. and fabri goes “o… kay??????”

hc Meg + John (Meg's take on the 'accidental' kiss)

oh my gosh brace yourself because i’m going to try to make this like an abbreviated version? of a meta post to come? but. i don’t know how well that’s gonna go. it might just be the full thing. let’s see what happens. 

so meg likes john from the very beginning. it starts off very simply: he’s good, and she realizes that very deeply. the nickname “mr. greatheart” really reflects all of the girls’ sentiments toward him, and it’s one meg adopts fondly. what starts as just a general sort of appreciation and respect develops over time into something of a crush, an attraction that she doesn’t know for what it is. she’s really very innocent when it comes to all matters of love, so i don’t think she realizes until quite late just what she feels for him, even though the feeling is there in some form all along. 

in fact, i don’t think she fully realizes why she thinks of him as often as she does until the “accidental” kiss. just a couple of chapters before that there’s the marmee line about meg “not loving john yet, but she will.” and i firmly believe marmee understands her daughters very thoroughly - - if she says meg doesn’t love john at that point, i’m inclined to believe her. but “she will” implies that there’s the beginnings of something there already. meg is already fond of mr. brooke, as is made plain in that conversation (”…please add that i send my love to john,” said mrs. march as she glanced over the letter, and gave it back. ”do you call him john?” asked meg smiling, with her innocent eyes looking down into her mother’s. “yes; he has been like a son to us, and we are very fond of him,” replied mrs. march, returning the look with a keen one. “i’m glad of that, he is so lonely […]”) it’s not the first time that meg’s care for john is made known - - she scolds laurie for giving him trouble, for instance - -  but it’s definitely a telling one. 

in between this point and the accidental kiss, meg “…was quite unlike herself. she started when spoken to, blushed when looked at, was very quiet, and sat over her sewing with a timid, troubled look on her face.” JO SAYS: “she feels it in the air - love, i mean - and she’s going very fast. she’s got most of the symptoms, - is twittery and cross, doesn’t eat, lies awake, and mopes in corners. i caught singing that song he gave her, and once she said “john.” as you do, and turned red as a poppy.” at this point, it’s fairly obvious to most of the marches that meg has some sort of feelings for john, and it was probably obvious that she was at least attracted to him from the beginning. it’s all just coming to a point, now: meg beginning to recognize her feelings, knowing that her parents like and approve of him a great deal, and to recognize that there’s a very good chance of her affections being returned. which we all knew from the start, but. you know. 

WHICH BRINGS US TO THE KISS ITSELF, at last.

and then there’s this, after brooke GRABS LAURIE AND GETS THE HECK OUT, because he just kissed the girl he loves and isn’t at all engaged to yet, whoops: “mr. march told how he had longed to surprise them, and how, when the fine weather came,, he had been allowed by his doctor to take advantage of it; how devoted brooke had been, and how he was altogether a most estimable and upright young man. why mr. march paused a minute just there, and, after a glance at meg, who was violently poking the fire, looked at his wife with an inquiring lift of his eyebrows, i leave you to imagine; also why mrs. march gently nodded her head, and asked, rather abruptly, if he wouldn’t like something to eat.”  

meg is, um….obviously affected by the kiss, by her feelings for brooke, by all of it. poor dear little thing. there’s some complications when he actually comes to ask for her because she has some Notions about refusing a man’s first proposal, because jo is challenging her, and because she’s had “notions of coquetry” from sally and the others that she hasn’t had a chance to use yet. but she really, truly, honestly is in love with him, and - - as we see - - her attempts and playing with this fail utterly because of her feelings for him. 

she’s both pleasantly surprised by and a little embarrassed because of the kiss. it’s her first real kiss and it happens in the middle of a moment of great emotion at her father’s return from war. it also happens very quickly, and then is swallowed up in all of the other happenings, and she barely has time to realize it’s happening before it’s over. she gasps when it happens, probably even begins to kiss him back, but the realization that they’re SURROUNDED BY HER FAMILY comes too quickly much more than that. 

i’m quite sure she thinks about it all the rest of that night, and shows all those lovesick symptoms mentioned earlier: lots of jumping, blushing, picks at her food, doesn’t sleep much at all, because she keeps thinking of it, playing the moment back over and over in her mind, wondering if he was still thinking about her, what he was thinking, what would happen next.

so, i’ll start off w/ the man himself. the paradox with tywin is he’s obsessed with ‘family’ but does not actually care for his individual children beyond their purpose to propagate lannister power-- by forming alliances through marriages, increasing their renown (and thus the family’s), etc.  he is pragmatic, yes, but to the point he fucks his kids up so much that they hate him, or at least cannot decide how to feel about him.

just from these quotes as they stand, you can see both twins struggle plainly with connecting any grief to the death of their father. “he felt no grief / the queen felt strangely calm”. how can you mourn someone you grew to hate? when, some part of you, though you can’t quite acknowledge it (isn’t it wrong? aren’t you supposed to be sad when a parent dies?), is glad that this immense shadow has faded, the eyes that made you feel “weak/worthless/ugly” are closed forever? their reactions are great examples of kids trying to deal with their emotions towards an abusive parent. they made your life hell, but they’re your parent. that’s meant to mean something, right? but tywin was never a father in the conventional term. he never cuddles his children or tells them they’re doing good. he starves them of any attention and projects his own hypocrisies and fears onto them. despite his icy facade, tywin lannister is a hypersensitive dick. he has a guy locked in the bowels of casterly rock until he starves to death for making a joke about his shit being gold-flecked. insecure much????? and he projects this onto his kids, primarily his ‘’’’golden twins’’’’’ because they hold all the hopes for house lannister, in his eyes. cersei is to be a queen, and jaime is to be the pinnacle of Man ; but both quiet and subordinate as far as concerns their father’s wishes. but also never cowing to the sheep. but also aware of the sheep. but also not caring what they think. but also you’re better than all of them anyway. he highlights his disgust of certain virtues and implies to his kids that they suffer from the same ‘ills’ when they displease him. peak manipulation! and people wonder why cersei and jaime are the way they are.

there is some relief, for both of them. of course it is a terrible event for the sake of their house, as tywin is believed to be the main power of the lannisters throughout the seven kingdoms ( though i have to talk sometime about how that idea is FAKE NEWS! and tywin is not this infallible mastermind everyone thinks he is, he is a huge hypocrite---- back to focus ). cersei fears the brightest star in the west has fallen, but she also revels in the idea of never being forced into a marriage again. never having to take someone into bed again that she does not wish there. she feels like with her father’s death some of her own agency has been restored to her-- a pipedream, of course. this is westeros, and we see in the latter part of the book and the next just how much she will suffer at the hands of patriarchal ideals ( fuck kevan lannister! ). they revere him, but they hate him. a perfect example of this love/hate is exemplified by cersei here:

like?? this?? speaks for itself?? she believes tywin deserves accompaniment in the afterlife akin to a king. and i can’t help, personally, thinking of the ancient rulers ( especially in egypt ) that had servants buried with them to aid them beyond the grave. it shows her idolisation of tywin, but also how she views him. he’s not going up, he’s going down. and i don’t just believe it is because cersei is aware of the atrocities he has committed; it’s how she feels about him. tywin makes his children yearn for that pat of the head, but always withdraws the hand an inch further, forcing them to chase after these impossible ideals he puts in place for them! tywin gets his wish with cersei, she becomes a queen: but it’s still not enough. jaime becomes a renowned knight with many accomplishments: it’s still not enough.

“would you want me to be strong?” / “you told me tears were a sign of weakness in a man”

they even question how their father would want them to process grief!!! he has fucked his kids up so badly they can’t even be sad about his death, nevermind deal with it. the twins don’t even know if crying is ‘correct’, or if their father would be glaring down on them, disgusted with the show of ‘’’’’’weakness’’’’ (SUCH a toxic concept). it’s more Lannisters Bottling Up Emotion, and it isn’t healthy. 

talking specifically of cersei: own father kept her locked up in a tower from the age of twelve to fifteen when he sent for her to join him at court. he denied every suitor because he wanted his daughter to be queen no matter what. jaime even talks about cersei growing more beautiful and ‘womanly’ locked up there; i can’t help think of rapunzel in her tower, locked up and barred by some patriarchal ideal that she has to be kept pure and untouchable until her [parental figure] finds her a husband suitable (in their eyes) for her.  ( then she burns her tower, her PRISON FOR YEARS, in affc..... my emotions ). and tywin makes a prisoner of cersei in more ways than just the literal. his control over his daughter is immense, and i believe he is a huge factor in her paranoia, her overreaction, her constant self-checking------ -- - and, of course, her internalised misogyny. his gaze pins her to her chair, and even tyrion feels pity for cersei. TYRION. “you are the queen, he should be begging your permission to leave” or w/e the quote is. cersei is the most powerful person in the room, but she turns to a child every time her father is near. a huge indicator for an abuser; i don’t believe tywin hit his children, but the emotional abuse... i’m not even touching on tyrion here, but think tysha. tyrion certainly gets the ABSOLUTE WORST of tywin’s treatment, but i don’t think cersei and jaime got off anywhere near scot free. tywin uses her as a pawn, and blatantly does not give a shit that his daughter was constantly r/aped and a/bused by her husband. women were made to smile and reproduce. as long as cersei did not make a fuss about it  ( and i hc part of her silence is the idea that her father would condemn her for being so weak as to either let it happen (disgusting), or to complain about it to him as if she cannot deal with it herself. which, she does. but how horrific is it that his own daughter didn’t feel she could come to him with her abuse? instead, she turns to jaime. but that’s a whole other meta. )

talking specifically of jaime: tywin disowns his own son for not acquiescing to his desires!!!! he tells his prized son that he is not a member of this family anymore, for not obeying Orders. as he should, because tywin’s children should be wrenches and hammers, tools for exercising his will. and tywin usually gets what he wants, by whatever means necessary. his brutality is legendary; his kids are no exception to this rule. jaime, it could be said, suffers the worst of all three from his father’s endless (impossible) expectations. he is to rule the rock, but also be an infallible knight, but also a commander, but also loyal to tywin/TheFamily alone, but also have wives and produce heirs, but also never complain about any of it and have any desires of his own. also let’s just mention how tywin uses his knowledge of jaime+tyrion’s closeness to manipulate jaime into aiding with the whole tysha scheme, leaving jaime with immense misplaced guilt and troubling memories. his father tells him at the age of ~eight that love is worthless because you cannot feed a horse with it, or keep a house warm with it. 

he wants control of them, and to get that control, he makes them compete for his approval / ‘love’. this obviously creates resentment, discord; and is another example of why i think tywin isn’t all the tactical mastermind people believe him to be. his tactics are all very well short-term, but long-term... there are many examples and fgs i’ll write this later, but in terms of his kids: they don’t know what parental love is meant to feel like, they idolise this abusive prick who is a hypocrite of his own ideals (married for love/has whores/is hugely insecure/ACTUALLY MAKES BAD DECISIONS SOMETIMES??) and places such high expectations on his kids that they break their backs trying to reach them. he wants his children to be empty little vesicles for his own desires, and by ignoring their individuality and pitting them against one another, he creates the downfall of his own house! i love this house of self-destructive idiots! i hate this house!

below: for me it is further evidence of how fucked the children of tywin are that they can’t even process SADNESS because what is an attachment beyond each other, as one another are the only love each has ever come to know? forget conventionality, forget the realm, forget what other people think. no one matters but each other, because, FAMILY IS ALL THAT MATTERS. ANYONE BUT A LANNISTER IS LESSER, right? thanks for the life fuckery lessons, dad.

just had to highlight this Cool Comparison between cersei and jaime’s povs and how the parallels reiterate what i’m trying to say here about difficulty processing grief. and also, vague sidenote, about tearing hair out and how both twins lose their hair as a symbol of death/rebirth and the various literary implications of that------- but focusing on grief:

this quote is jaime finding out about joffrey’s death. he explains his difficulty feeling sadness, telling himself that it is because ‘joffrey was more robert’s than his’ as an excuse. he had no attachment to the boy, bc he didn’t feel like he should have one. cersei told him early on how that could endanger them, and he didn’t care. ‘robert was welcome to him’-- though this might be bias of hindsight-- he dislikes joffrey in the present-- but it is also seen in jaime’s jealousy colouring his view------ jaime lannister is inherently selfish, especially when it comes to his twin, and joffrey “took up too much of cersei’s time, cersei’s love, and cersei’s breasts.” ( still laughs 100 yrs later at jaime getting jealous of a baby breastfeeding ).

you know, i’ve been here for over three years and i guess i majorly remained by this shitty canon, and i guess default is gonna be my looser and looser interpretation of it, but i am full of rage and bitterness, and also........ just tired. i’m really tired. so i won’t shut up about this au i’ve been talking about, which shouldn’t have been an au in the first place if the writing made sense and didn’t go to shit, ignoring any sensible plot or character development ever. if u want to hear my reasons honestly just read what i keep writing every other day, i have many rage rants and metas. but i also won’t shut up about it, bc in my head in happened, so here we go.

HERE ARE SOME HCS FOR THAT THING WHERE MERLIN DOESN’T STAY A SERVANT FOR HIS SPAN OF BEING IN CAMELOT BC HE DESERVED BETTER:

it’s been brought up quickly into arthur’s rule as the new king, probably by gwaine on several occasions, because gwaine is a good bean who would definitely point it out fiercely had he not be forgotten as a vital point of the core trio.

the idea of a promotion is presented around the time arthur wants to propose to gwen by arthur himself, and it’s a Big Thing, it really is, but dear ol’ uncle agravaine is still there, and then all the drama happens, so making it official is put off for a bit, but merlin also slowly ceases from his position as a servant, letting george take over as he focuses on everything else he’s been doing minus the chores.

he’s only officially fired from his job as a servant right after arthur picks up excalibur though, because it was never actually said out loud before for some reason, and all these things are happening, so i guess it’s now or never.

everything’s officiated after arthur and gwen’s marriage, but before she’s crowned as queen, seeing as they clearly separated the two in the show. it’s no a long span of time though, hence why he’s wearing arthur’s old tunic during that time.

he’s name a free man of camelot, and soon given a title of an earl to fit his new position at court. it is a little shaky at first, ranging from the royal advisor, to the right hand of the king, to just commonly used ‘hand of the king’. when the round table is appointed, he still sits at arthur’s right hand. he also never abandons learning the physician’s craft though.

not long after, he’s sent along with gwen to royal tailors for a whole redo of his wardrobe, and while he protests loudly at first, once the material proves to be much softer in touch, he eventually stops. still ends up wearing three of the same shirts on regular basis though.

especially at first, he visibly fidgets when someone calls him ‘my lord’, especially since most of the servants have been his friends for years, and it’s just strange. arthur probably particularly enjoys that part, because merlin’s always been the one to use titles when angry or sarcastic. he gets used to it eventually, but prefers servants and such to still use his bloody name.

he and gwen hang out a lot like they always would, because really, they’re both adjusting and it takes time, so it’s nice to have someone there who just gets you.

merlin blurts out the truth about his magic about two to three months into his service, and things are a bit strained for a while, but eventually they are worked out, and they can move forward towards a more equal ground. some things are more touchy than others, like the subject of morgana, but a firm understanding and much closer friendship is worked out.

that’s what prompts a gradual change of climate, and eventual reach goal of bringing back magic into the land. it’s not that simple, of course, not after the giant mess and destruction and pain uther has caused, but working hard ends up leading to finally legalizing magic. merlin’s title as court sorcerer doesn’t become official for a bit only because the moods in court vastly differ. it’s all a long process.

but sometime after telling the truth, he’s also given a seal ring that gives him the power to sign papers in his, as well as arthur’s name.

sometime along the way merlin’s mother is brought to court for her safety, and that’s about when her own true parantage as a king’s daughter in exile, as well as merlin’s (and gaius’ by default) is revealed. it changes some things, but there’s clear insistence on each of the parties that it remains unsaid.

eventually. things go to shit anyway tho, mostly because how great it’d be if things actually changed, but never quite went there because the kingdom has been terrorized and brainwashed by uther’s rule for over twenty years, and things take time. how much more it’d sting if they were actually getting somewhere, to some sort of a golden age, and destiny still happened and fucked shit up because nothing is nice. think about that.

holden gave her the programming that it was okay to kill if it was to fill an objective he set (this allowed her to kill him later and honestly that was his bad)

fitz taught her how to lie, and holden assured her that it was okay to do so

as mack, the only person with a logical fear of robots would tell us, this is a bad idea

and then we get the darkhold

man who, from the other side, convinced aida to read the book? 

who then later enabled her to keep reading and gain all the knowledge and use it to help him create the framework and expand it and make it better

but oh man thats another good point who designed the framework? 

holden radcliffe and leopold fitz

holden specifically was the one that wanted it to grow, that encouraged her to push the simulation, that had the plan to put may into it and give her a whole different life to keep her contained

holden was also the one to have them kidnap and replace the rest of the team

when I started shipping it if I did: i don’t remember tbh. i always lowkey shipped it haha, but i don’t think i really realised it until @wassailtofivehundred was like !! yukikae !! and also i saw cute fanart and i rewatched a couple episodes (kyoto trip ehh) and i was like, fuck i really ship this. also a lot of it was b/c around december (the time i published be your own hero) i started liking kayano a lot more and then that made me salty bc nagisa/kayano was so poorly written and an injustice to her character. she deserved a person who she had actual chemistry with, and i think kanzaki is definitely that person (or one of them).

my thoughts: pure!! good!! beautiful and amazing!! i love it!! so much!! i’m working on a v v long yukikae kayano-POV fic right now and i’m excited to show it to y’all b/c i have trouble expressing how much/why i love characters/ships until i have a fic to support it, haha. but anyway i think kanzaki is really good for kayano b/c she’s so understanding and caring, and kayano is good for kanzaki because — look they just care so much abt each other okay they’re so Good.

What makes me happy about them: so good. so pure. so beautiful. they’re just healthy for each other and i love the idea of kayano’s best friend supporting her through all the shit she’s gone through because fuck, man, kayano’s mom and sister are dead, the only “friends” she had, she built her friendship on a lie, the teacher she tried to kill and then turned out not to be guilty is dead anyway (bye bye, purpose that kept her going for a year despite all her issues), the person she was for a year was a lie but — not all of it, okay, deep down kaede kayano/akari yukimura is still a good caring person and kanzaki knows it even if she did lie and the two of them supporting each other and I just — yeah

What makes me sad about them: i’m always full of salt about kayano so :/ i don’t like it when people don’t acknowledge the kayano arc happened/kayano’s real personality is very different from the one she pretended to be/she lied to the class for a year? yeah matsui just decided to forget about it and sideline her because he’s a shit writer and what the fuck is continuity, but that doesn’t mean you should follow his example. so it’d be great to see those issues acknowledged!! give me kanzaki understanding kayano did fucked-up things and is a messy person who was not the kind, cheerful, sweet girl she pretended to be and loving her anyway!! (acknowledge and justify the kayano arc for why it happened without throwing logic out the window, and i’ll personally send you a thank-you card)

things done in fanfic that annoys me: there are two fics on ao3 for yukikae, lol (i’m planning to remedy this because inexcusable!!). one is kayano third wheeling karmagisa w/ like 5 lines of actual yukikae (no offense to the author, the fic is fine, it’s just Not Yukikae). the other is green’s fic and admittedly there isn’t a lot of overtly romantic yukikae but it’s a really good fic and there’s good worldbuilding and concepts and y’all should read it

things I look for in fanfic: having it exist. that’s what i’m looking for. that being said, see above rant, because while there aren’t many fics about kanzaki (beautiful daughter pls love her more), there is plenty of fic about kayano and it is almost never accurate. it makes me sad. accurate, well-done characterization is what i Live for

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: both of them, okuda. as previously mentioned, kanzaki, maybe yada? for kaede, rio, also yada, maybe kataoka (it’s mentioned kayano admires her and i don’t think that was a lie, akari seems like the type of girl who recognises and respects strength and competence in people). um. the 3-E girls are all good in general haha, the only person i can think of off the top of my head i’d say no to is okano with kanzaki because okano dislikes her and kanzaki is uncomfortable with that, so. :/ although seeing them work past it (and okano getting past her own insecurities regarding her femininity) would be cool, so even then, i can’t say Absolutely Never. just not nagisa/kayano pls

My happily ever after for them: sometime in their mid/late-20s, they move into an apartment together and own lots of books and cute stationery and various trinkets. also a cat. maybe other pets, like a hamster or a dog. kayano is a successful actress all over again but keeps her relationship with kanzaki not secret but lowkey. kanzaki is away from her parents and likes her job and reads a lot of books. their friends come visit them pretty frequently and the neighbors think they’re adorable. they’re happy.

gakushuu asano

How I feel about this character: today i started thinking about him completely out of the blue, with no prompting, and then i sat down and wrote 4 pages in my notebook about an AU where ikeda doesn’t die and gakuhou remains a good dad. last sentence is “in another world, gakushuu asano is healthy and happy and okay.” this is pretty much how i am all day every day i love this child so much he’s just. i see a lot of myself in him (hes relatable okay) and he’s so amazing and brilliant and full of curiosity and potential and i!!! love!!! him!!!! i want him to be happy so much!!! i love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

All the people I ship romantically with this character: karma (obviously haha), um. fuck. im really fond of renshuu (like really fond) but i usually ship it as ren having a one-sided crush on gakushuu that eventually concludes in ren realising shuu’s crushing unattainability (also i hc gakushuu as ace arospec and he’s kinda ehhh abt romance in general. projecting? me? yeah) and dealing with it and they become really really good best friends even tho it makes ren’s heart hurt a lil bit but mostly its okay. fuck i had a fic abt this i started months ago that i never finished i gotta do that but yeah i envision the virtuosos’ dynamic as being very very complicated in general. oh yeah i cant believe i said i ship karma/gakushuu only once in this post so far so anyway i ship karushuu i love karushuu karushuu is love karushuu is life

My non-romantic OTP for this character: the virtuosos of course its not like i wrote like 1k+ of meta on this hahahaha also gakushuu/isogai, gakushuu/kataoka (why cant we see his respect for her acknowledged as well i know isogai gets his own ep and all but kataoka is still important and is also a class rep :/), gakushuu/nagisa a little bit (i used to be super into it and i still kinda like it), i actually really like the idea of platonic!karushuu because those two are cute boyfriends but working their way from enemies to rivals with grudging respect for each other to best friends?? it’s good

My unpopular opinion about this character: he and karma are not the same person or quite frankly anywhere close to it. there’s lots of parallels they’re good narrative foils but seeing people act like gakushuu is just a recoloured karma makes me sad. pls no my son is so complex and wonderful and different pls pls understand this he’s not just karma akabane with orange hair he’s his own character and such a good one

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: he goes to MIT and is separated from his father’s awful awful toxic influence and lives a happy brilliant successful life and is emotionally okay. i mean it’s not non-canon hahaha but seeing it onscreen would’ve been cool. we can assume that happens anyway tho b/c it’s gakushuu. uhh seeing him interact with his mom onscreen (or like, seeing his mom at all) would’ve been really cool!!! for who i imagine his mom as, i pretty much just think of @cosmicyue‘s hideko asano headcanon :)

one of saelinriel's dearest possessions is a 'sailor stone' pendant that hangs on a long strip of leather. sailor stones are any pale, generally clear-ish, blue gems (aquamarines, blue topaz, etc - it doesn't actually matter what the stone technically is, as long as it falls within those parameters) and they're held to be good luck charms for gondorian sea-captains/merchants & dol amrothians from all walks of life.

the legends tell that sailor's stones are treasures of ulmo's maiar, made by uinen when she begged for many clear stones from aule. when he relented, she took them to the bay of eldamar and dipped them into the clear crystalline water. when she lifted them, they were had been stained the blue of a calm sea. since they are beloved of the sea maiar, carrying them at sea is said to give ships easy passage/fair winds and (traditionally) the stone is believed to have the ability to purify water and protect/heal its bearer while they travel. usually though, the gems aren't given for any of their supposed powers but instead they're given so that whoever is receiving it will carry a piece of the sea with them, however far from it they are.
