Musings about Origins characters reappearing during Inquisition.

Amalia Amell, Warden-Commander, first visits Leliana shortly after the fall of Haven, but in her animal shapeshifted form. First taught by her friend Morrigan, Amalia would master shapeshifting, and to maximise travel speed and lower suspicion, would travel to Leliana often as a Red Hawk. Undertaking distant operations with the few Ferelden Wardens who didn't travel west, and trying to uncover why that happened.

Sofia Surana, runaway apostate, has spent the years since Amaranthine travelling and dealing with shenanigans, though often making contact with Amalia and Leliana during the years. Makes her way towards Skyhold shortly after news arrives of the Inquisition reaching it, ends up travelling alongside two others on their way towards Skyhold for reasons nobody wants to discuss. (Includes Miriaa Lavellan, Inquisitor Ivey's older sister, and Adelaide, daughter of the Chevalier that Ivey killed in revenge for killing her parents). Sofia simply is aware that Leliana is there, and wants to visit her, as well as regain her connections.

Finally, Jaydin Amell (@hamingo 's bloodmage Amell, romanced & did the Dark Ritual with Morrigan, and is Amalia's brother), who followed Morrigan through the Eluvian during Witch hunt, first present at Halamshiral during the Masquerade. Was tasked with watching over his son Kieran, reconnects with Amalia, Sofia and Leliana. Amalia spends most of her time interacting with her newly found nephew, while Jaydin and Sofia spend their time messing with nobles using magic (telling Kieran not to do these things anytime he can see it). Jaydin later goes along with Morrigan and Kieran to Skyhold to take up residence.

Netflix Revives 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World' With Anime Hello again, friend of a friend! Netflix has ordered a full series of the rumored Scott Pilgrim anime series, which will reunite basically the entire cast of the cult classic rom-com/beat-em'-up/Metric-concert-video. News of the series first spread in January 2022, back when it was still in development at the streamer.Better yet, Bryan Lee O'Malley, who created the graphic novel series of the same name, will co-write and executive produce the Netflix version with BenDavid Grabinski, while Science SARU will animate it. The studio is known for some of the best-looking animations of the 21st century, like 2018's Devilman Crybaby re-imagining, Japan Media Arts Festival Grand Prize winner Keep Your Hands off Eizoken! and Tatami Time Machine Blues.Edgar Wright, the film's original director and co-writer, will also executive produce the series.Variety wasn't kidding when it said most of the cast of the original flick will be returning for the anime. Three: Clean Noses

Chapter Summary: Hard-pressed for every nickel and dime since things went south in Blackwater, Dutch tells everyone they have to earn their share and keep their noses clean in the Heartlands.

     THERE'S A SPIEL from Dutch Van der Linde about lying low around the Heartlands, how important it is everyone keeps their noses clean, and how everyone needs to do their share to help make up for the lost money in Blackwater. More pertinent to Lilian Cornwall is the reveal of his plan involving her. The first he's spoken of it —even to Hosea and Arthur judging by their trepidatious expressions while standing at Dutch's side. When the time feels right, he plans to arrange a meeting with Leviticus on neutral grounds —no lawmen, no Pinkertons— a simple exchange between gentlemen. An heiress for a clean slate and money enough to get back west. To Dutch, it's an infallible plan, but Lily knows her father better than anyone else. Nothing is going to be simple about what happens next, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a goddamn fool.

    Karen Jones cuts an imposing figure when she waltzes up to Lilian Cornwall with whiskey clinging to her tongue and a mean streak wider than the Lannahechee. Old Grimshaw already ground on Karen's nerves over setting up camp again and seeing Miss Cornwall sitting on a tree stump overlooking the shift of colors in the evening sky struck another nerve. Just cause she's the newest pawn in Dutch's scheme doesn't mean she couldn't do some goddamn work. "What do we do with you, missy?" Karen half-slurs, pointing a finger toward Lily with a sneer —draining the color from her cheeks. "Could tie you to a tree like that O'Driscoll boy." She points over her shoulder to the tree to Kieran Duffy and laughs at the shred of fear she sees in the spoiled little rich girl.

    Arthur sets a crate with tin plates and dented silverware on the table —seeing the two women at odds, he draws in a slow breath and adjusts the brim of his old hat. "Leave her 'lone, Karen," he says, waving her away. There's a quip on her tongue about him being a stick in the mud, but Karen thinks better of it, stalking off. He stands there a minute, eyes flitting between the sunset and Lily before he decides to sit on the tree stump too. It's a quieter evening than most, with the soft chirp of crickets and distant birdsong mingled with Javier's flamenco guitar —reminiscent of the days before everything turned sour in Blackwater.

    A sad sigh breaks the calm. "The girls don't like me much," Lilian notes, focusing on the lines of her palms, disheartened to know she would find no camaraderie with the women of the gang. It was clear from the way they looked at her since she first arrived in Colter —now it seemed there won't a single thing she could say or do to make them feel differently. Their minds already set.

    Arthur can't blame them, but he can't blame Lily either. "Suppose they wouldn't," he muses, thinking of the girls and their dreams and how few of them had come to fruition. It's mostly jealousy souring their view of Lilian Cornwall. He wants to tell her they'll come around eventually, or maybe she and Molly O'Shea might get on better, but he's not going to make a liar of himself. A glance over his shoulder, and Arthur sees the work is almost done for the day. Pearson's stew is smoking, Bill is starting a campfire, and the last of his things being set up by Grimshaw.

    "C'mon princess" —he nods to a wagon at the edge of the camp— "I'll show you to your castle." Lilian follows behind him, catching a sour glare from Karen and a curious glance from John Marston sitting up in his tent, half his face still wrapped in bloody linen. Her castle is a cot beneath a lean-to of one of the wagons —Arthur's quarters, though he doesn't say as much, she can tell by a fading photograph of him, Hosea, and Dutch from younger days. She doesn't smile, but when she looks back to Arthur, there's gratitude shining in her hazel eyes, to which one corner of his lips quirks upward.

    MARY-BETH CAN'T HELP the soft spot she has for Kieran Duffy. No one in the gang trusts him, not even Mary-Beth in truth, but she can tell he's a kind soul, especially to the gang's horses. And if an O'Driscoll can be as decent as Kieran, then Mary-Beth thinks Lilian Cornwall might not be as bad as the others say her father is. Besides, it'd already been a few weeks since they came down from the Grizzlies and each passing day saw Dutch's prized jewel sinking further into hopelessness. The way Lilian looked across to the mountains and Dakota River below sometimes could just about make the hardest of hearts weep.

    Must be a little after midday judging by the shadows when Mary-Beth puts aside her needle and thread —having pricked her poor fingers a dozen times over already while lost in daydreams. She searches around camp, finding Lilian sitting on a boulder near the cliffside with Javier serving as her ward, both of them staring out at the rainbow in the distance. Better than Bill or Micah Mary-Beth thinks, wringing her hands together as she approaches. The snap of a branch underfoot gives away her presence. Lilian shifts on the rock, looking back. "Mary-Beth," she greets with a reserved smile.

    There's something about Lilian Cornwall that makes Mary-Beth feel meek —perhaps it's just the name, or maybe the practiced poise, or that Lilian's the closest thing to the girls in her stories. She wrings her hands together. "If you like to read" —Lily's smile grows at the mention, a good book brings the same joy as a fresh canvas— "I have a few books." Most were silly romance novels, as Susan and the others called them, but Mary-Beth didn't mind, especially when she let her mind wander.

    "Thank you," Lilian says.

    Mary-Beth nods with a smile, taking a step back to rejoin Tilly with chores, but she stops again, looking around those scattered about the camp and back to Lilian Cornwall. She knows what it's like to be timid around these folks. She'd been nervous and shy when Dutch first brought her back to camp. Now they're family —more of a family than the one she was born into. "They're not all bad," Mary-Beth blurts out, not quite thinking before she says it. Lily raises a dark brow, knowing she's talking about the gang now, not her books. "Jus' a little rough 'round the edges."

    Lily glances back over the Dakota River, half-hiding her smile. She knows there's truth in Mary-Beth's statement. Arthur and Hosea didn't seem bad at all, though she remained wary of others, especially Dutch. "I will bear that in mind." Mary-Beth nods, smiling too as she retreats to her chores 'fore Grimshaw can say anything.

    HIS CLOTHES ARE tinged with blood and dirt from an early hunt and helping Pearson skin the pronghorn buck for the dinner pot when he looks around the camp, nursing a hot cup of bitter coffee. Lilian woke in the twilight hours to the rustling of a gun belt and the quiet jingle of spurs —Arthur mounted up before dawn to bring in the night's meal. Besides a few of the others bringing in wild turkeys or rabbits, Charles and Arthur were the ones ensuring no one went to bed with an empty stomach.

    "Coffee?" Arthur asks, holding out a second cup as he takes a seat next to her at the campfire. It became routine as of late, him finding Lilian in the mornings and sharing a cup of coffee and whatever Pearson scrounged up for breakfast —usually potato hash or porridge. "Added some honey," he notes. He'd gone to the general store the day before and picked up a jar of honey, would help sweeten the cornbread and Lily's coffee.

    In the past weeks, Lilian grew accustomed to the bitterness of Pearson's coffee, but the honey sweetness lingering on her tongue is a pleasantry that makes her expression falter into despair as a great wave of homesickness washes over her. It's not quite the same as a sugar cube and splash of cream, but it's enough. "Thank you," Lily whispers, her voice shaking and hazel eyes glistening with tears.

    He doesn't like seeing her cry, or anyone for that matter. Unsure what to do, Arthur lays his hand on her back —the same way Abigail does with little Jack if he wakes from a bad dream. Lilian stiffens under his touch but settles when she realizes he means to comfort her. She takes a shaky breath, doing her best to regain her composure. "I'm sorry 'bout all this, Miss Cornwall," Arthur mutters, thinking about the mess they'd made out of this and all the whispers floating from town to town.

    Valentine's abuzz with too many rumors to keep straight about how Leviticus Cornwall's daughter went missing. Some say Lilian was kidnapped by outlaws or natives and being held for ransom. Others say she ran away for love, that Leviticus must have disproved of her beau. No matter the rumors, Leviticus has already put up a thousand-dollar reward for any half-decent information that leads to Lilian's safe return and nearly five thousand for anyone who could bring her back safe.

    Wiping her tears away, she glimpses Arthur with his kind blue-green gaze and brows knitted with concern —his demeanor softer than usual. "I don't think you're the one who needs to be apologizing, Arthur," Lilian says, looking down at the coffee cup, her disheveled appearance staring back. "You and Hosea are the only ones who even bother to make sure I'm still breathing." Arthur's hand slips to the curve of her back, lingering for a long moment before he leans forward, grasping his tin cup with both hands. He glances at Lily with a small smile laced with a sigh, wondering what it is about her that makes him want to do the right thing.

the timeline in which something big to them never happened.. thank you

a slightly altered timeline.   send me  ‘ timeline ’  and a number and i will tell you how my muse and their life would have turned out in a life slightly altered compared to their canon one—same universe, but where something little, or something big, went differently.

#10 - A timeline where Colm never killed Annabelle and Dutch never killed Colms brother.

Dutch would have stayed friends with Colm long term, he still would have split and made his own gang due to wanting that power for himself, but he would have been able to call on the O’Driscoll gang whenever they needed help or men. At some point Dutch would have married Annabelle, thrown a large party for it and danced with her and the rest of the gang all that night.

For that, he may not have picked up as many people as he did, or most of them. Hosea, Arthur, Susan would be constant, but the rest may have never been picked up, or picked up at a different time. Arthur and Hosea would have gone into town and picked up John themselves, at a time before he was about to be hung, possibly when he was running from the law and then brought him back to the gang. Hosea would talk Arthur into taking John under his wing, while Dutch felt indifferent to the boy.

Dutch would still never go west and chose to stay close to the O’Driscolls for protection and extra men. Eventually Dutchs smaller gang would stop being a gang and would instead get a farm for themselves thanks to Annabelle talking constantly about wanting to settle. Arthur, Hosea, John, and Susan would stick around and they’d take on farm hands or bring in O’Driscoll boys that wanted to get away from Colm for a little. Kieran would join as a farm hand that wanted to stay away from Colm for some time, and Dutch would take to him with a spark in his eye.

Dutch would never truly change though, eventually he’d kill someone, have to run away from his home he’d made. He’d leave a letter behind so nobody would worry and he’d run. The Van Der Linde gang would form much later in his life and he’d be ruthless, but he would send letters to his family on the farm. He couldn’t go home, he’d still fight against the law and against the system that would try to tear him down and bring rich men up.

Eventually those on the farm would go into a town one morning, get their mail and get a paper, they’d see Dutch’s face plastered on the front and they’d read about him being shot and killed years after he left. Hosea and Annabelle would travel to go get him, wrap his body up and bring him home. They’d bury him on their hillside with flowers over his grave.

⚫  Westel’s surname was originally Sorrelon. He’s gone by Firewing in most circles since he was in his thirties, but only legally changed his surname about ten years ago.

⚫  Farstrider records, though, have always marked him down as Firewing since he joined with documents falsifying his age and family relations.

⚫ Westel has an incredibly difficult time performing magic and actually hasn’t attempted it in decades at this point. The reason for his incapability is unknown to him and isn’t something he has bothered to explore.

⚫ Westel has been estranged from his family for many years with the exception of his younger sister, Mel, a healer and pacifist. He began a slow reconciliation with his eldest brother, a Blood Knight, but Cal was killed in action before any real work on their relationship could be made. His second eldest brother, arcane prodigy Vathal, fell with Silvermoon to the Scourge. His mother and father are still living but have no contact with Westel or their grandchildren. 

⚫ For years after Silvermoon’s fall, West struggled with addictions to various substances. His drug usage led to a lot of unfortunate events, including a mental break down that involved some very real hallucinations. While he has been clean of drug usage for about six years, his relationship with alcohol remains unhealthy.

⚫ West, as many other soldiers, suffers from PTSD. The worst of it was triggered after events during his deployment at Domination Point in Pandaria. Subsequent episodes led to the Farstriders placing him on extended leave. He still has not developed healthy coping mechanisms and the PTSD affects his sleep, relationship with loved ones, and his performance on the battle field. 

⚫  He has five tattoos: one is one large piece covering the majority of the left side of his body of dark red runic markings, a simple letter ‘A’ is inked on the inside of his right wrist, ‘Anais’ is tattooed on his right arm just beneath the shoulder, an artful piece of a black wolf is on his back right shoulder blade, and two wolf pups chase each other around his right ankle. He also has a number of piercings: thirteen total in his ears, one nipple piercing, and another piercing that was the result of some very drunk shenanigans.

#5 John West Salmon. Bear Fight: 2000

‘Bear Fight’ ha llegado a convertirse en el comercial de tv más visto de internet. Fue producido en noviembre del 2000 para promocionar el salmón enlatado John West, perteneciente a la marca Heinz.

El spot, filmado en las tierras altas de Escocia, comienza simulando ser un documental sobre la vida salvaje de los osos grises, para luego dejar paso a una pelea de kung-fu entre uno de los osos y un pescador, ya que desean el mismo salmón.

Además, el comercial ganó varios premios en el 2001 y 2002, incluyendo ‘mejor comercial del año’, y un ‘león de oro’ en los Lions Cannes, entre otros.

De este anuncio, para mí lo más importante es que es muy divertido y original, vender salmón enlatado de forma divertida creo que debió ser todo un reto, porque no es un producto que sea ni muy llamativo ni muy comercial, y que suele ser más bien algo aburrido y con el que se tiende a relaciona con conceptos más serios. Pero con una risa asegurada, te ganas quedarte en la boca de la gente, y te ganas que te compartan, el mensaje queda retenido mucho más tiempo en la memoria de la gente, siento que es un spot muy efectivo.

#4 “Parisian Love”, Google: febrero 2010

Este spot, que salió a la luz en febrero de 2010, fue el primer comercial de Google, lanzado en la Super Bowl de ese mismo año. Nació como un proyecto para los estudiantes de diseño y publicidad que participaban del programa ‘Google 5′ de la empresa.

La intención del comercial era llegar a la gente con recursos simples, y llegó a ser uno de los primeros anuncios que promocionaban productos o servicios del área de la tecnología utilizando las emociones como estrategia de venta, humanizando el producto y utilizando el ‘strorytelling’ como recurso narrativo.

Conmemorando la década desde el primer anuncio, en el 2020, para la Super Bowl de este año, Google lanza otro spot como continuación del anterior, ‘Loretta’, haciéndonos un resumen de toda una vida y de cómo sus productos nos pueden ayudar en el día a día a no olvidar a quién nos importa.

De estos anuncios me parece súper interesante como logran emocionarnos sin siquiera hacernos ver algo físico o tangible, tan solo con mostrarnos cómo alguien utiliza los servicios de Google en internet, nos desvelan toda una historia que poco a poco nos va emocionando detalle a detalle, y al final, lo que publicita es algo que no solemos relacionar con algo emocional pero que a partir de ese momento ya no volveremos a ver con los mismos ojos.

#3 RANG-TAN, Greenpeace: 2018

El vídeo de Rang-tan nació como una colaboración entre ‘Greenpeace’ y la cadena de supermercados británica ‘Iceland Foods’, con el objetivo de la defensa de los orangutanes. 

En el spot, elaborado en animación 2D, un pequeño orangután, ‘Rang-tan’, se cuela en la habitación de una niña, a la que le cuenta su historia de huída de su hogar debido a la desforestación para el cultivo del aceite de palma. La cadena de supermecados, pretendía mostrar como se había deshecho de todos los productos que contenían este ingrediente.

El objetivo era que el comercial se emitise por televisión en las Navidades de 2018, pero a la hora del lanzamiento, el vídeo fue censurado por los organismos reguladores de la publicidad en Reino Unido, debido al mensaje político que supuestamente expresaba. Aunque el spot nunca llegó a emitirse en la TV, esta medida lo único que provocó fue la viralización del anuncio a nivel mundial, sobretodo gracias a las redes sociales, llegando a millones de vistas.

Público objetivo: británico. Niños, jóvenes y adultos. Grandes empresas de distribución de alimentos.

En lo personal, creo que este anuncio es muy efectivo con lo que quiere transmitir, utiliza los recursos de la emoción y el storytelling para introducirte en los zapatos de una niña y generar empatía en tí, por lo que provoca ganas de ayudar y de hacer algo, que al fin y al cabo, es el objetivo final de la campaña. Me parece que la utilización de un entorno y una estetica infantil ayudan mucho, ya que solemos considerar a los niños como algo que debemos proteger y cuidar, además, de cierta manera pone al chimpancé pequeño al nivel de la niña, los iguala para que sintamos por él lo mismo que sentiríamos por un niño humano en su situación. Me parece una forma muy inteligente de llegar a la gente, y entiendo perfectamente que lo intentaran censurar por intereses económicos y políticos, porque es un comercial realmente efectivo.

#2 IKEA: mayo 2019

Mientras que en EEUU y UK la marca ha logrado tener éxito, siendo relativamente fácil conectar con el público, en los Emiratos Árabes lograrlo estaba siendo más dificultoso, por lo que buscaba algo original y atrayente para lograr captar su atención.

En esta original campaña publicitaria, IKEA busca atraer al público a través de la serie fotográfica “IKEA Real Life”, recreando diferentes escenarios de las series más populares del momento, utilizando los muebles y decoraciones disponibles en su tienda, para lograr que nos sintamos más cercanos a nuestras historias de ficción favoritas y haciéndonos que tenemos al alcance de la mano, de forma fácil y económica, esos objetos y decoraciones que tanto nos gustan, si nos acercamos a sus tiendas.

Las series elegidas fueron ‘Los Simpsons’, ‘Friends’ y ‘Stranger Things’, para dividir la campaña en tres categorías: ‘salones para familias’, ‘salones para amigos’, y ‘salones para cualquiera’, respectivamente.  Para recrear estos escenarios, fueron necesarios dos meses de trabajo utilizando software de diseño 3D, partiendo de la selección de los objetos a utilizar entre miles de productos pertenencientes a la marca IKEA.

La distribución de la campaña fue pensada para ser colocada en redes sociales, los cátalogos online y de forma física en diferentes tiendas de los Emiratos Árabes. También se ofreció una página web en donde poder encontrar las piezas únicas necesarias para recrear estos escenarios en casa.

Bajo mi punto de vista, esta campaña me parece una forma original de generar un nuevo uso o necesidad de los productos que vende IKEA, realmente me llamó mucho la atención lo diferente de la idea y lo bien que funciona, me da la sensación de que era algo muy obvio pero que a la vez a nadie se le había ocurrido hacer antes. Las personas cada vez se sienten más atadas emocionalmente a las series que más les gustan, por lo que pienso que es un buen gancho para promocionar los productos, la idea funciona muy bien y es muy llamativa.

#1 DRACULA - BBC+NETFLIX: Enero 2020.

Esta valla, instalada en Londres y Birminghan, es parte de la campaña publicitaria para promocionar la nueva serie de ‘Dracula’, producida en conjunto por la BBC y Netflix y estrenada el primero de enero de 2020.

Su particularidad es que el aspecto de la valla cambia según el momento del día: mientras que aún haya luz solar, lo que se puede ver son unas estacas clavadas en el panel, a medida de cae el sol y anochece, aparece poco a poco una sombra proyectada que conforma la silueta del vampiro amenazador.

Además, como detalle adicional, debajo de la valla se instala una vitrina que contiene una estaca de madera, junto al mensaje “En caso de vampiros, romper el cristal”, creando todo un juego alrededor del concepto de los vampiros y el personaje.

Aunque la ejecución de la idea pueda parecer completamente original, el concepto de utilizar sombras proyectadas en publicidad no lo es, ya que se ha utilizado en distintas ocasiones en el pasado, como para esta valla de la cerveza ‘New Castle Brown Ale’.

Lo que más me llamó la atención de esta campaña es que me da la sensación de que se ha jugado muy bien con todos los conceptos que se tenían, todos encajan perfectamente y se relacionan muy bien, desde la idea de que lo que genera la sombra son ‘estacas’ clavadas en la valla, hasta con la idea de que el ‘vampiro’ aparezca al oscurecer porque no puede recibir la luz del sol, y el guiño de humor con la vitrina, simplemente me parece que todo queda muy acorde y bien atado, además de que es algo muy llamativo y que se ha hecho viral rápidamente, a pesar de que la sombra proyectada para publicidad ya había sido utilizada antes, creo que en este caso ha generado muchisímo más éxito porque el concepto está muy bien pensado.

Caitlin R. Kiernan- a short story guide

Creepy, grotesque, and Romantic with a capital R, Caitlin R. Kiernan is probably my favorite modern “goth” writer.  She has a hell of a lot of novels and short stories under her belt, but I’ve read more of the latter than the former.  As such, here is a guide to my favorite of her stories, and where you can find them in print and online; this list will probably get updated as I continue to read more collections.

General warning: Kiernan is super into gore, trauma and weird monster sex.  The stories I’ve picked are mostly pretty mild for her, but consider this a “turn back now sign” for the squeamish.

Pickman’s Other Model (found in Black Wings of Cthulhu and Confessions of a Five Chambered Heart)

A continuation of the Lovecraft story Pickman’s Model, bringing his ghouls and cults into the early days of silent film and its ensuing scandals.  The horrors of Lovecraft (and of early experimental film) entrap outsiders and insiders alike.

The Prayer of Ninety Cats (found in The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy and Horror 2014, Beneath an Oil-Dark Sea, and online)

This story is about Elizabeth Bathory and witchcraft and cannibalism, but mostly it’s about the experience of watching horror movies.  Don’t go into this expecting a standard narrative; read it for the creepy images and poetic mood, and enjoy the feeling of having discovered a new, surreal Hammer Horror film to watch.

Werewolf Smile (found in Dear Sweet Filthy World)

I hesitate to say this story is a “commentary” on art, but it’s certainly a very creepy look at it.  An artist weaves the murder of Elizabeth Short, the Beast of Gevaudan and the story of Little Red Riding Hood into a pornographic exhibit even as the stress destroys the life of his muse (and of her lover.)  Portions of this went into my favorite Kiernan novel, The Drowning Girl.

Rappucini’s Dragon (found in Confessions of a Five Chambered Heart)

Again touching on the classics of gothic literature, Kiernan tells the story of a young man’s revenge on the pair of libertines who murdered his twin.  Once you’ve finished the story, you’ll realize the title gave it away all along.

The Ammonite Violin (found in The Ammonite Violin and Others)

@lowereastnowhere commented that this story feels like the best of Hannibal, and indeed, its villain shares a rather similar goal to one of that show’s killers of the week.  The difference is that this story cares about the souls of his victims, and shows us just why he feels his crimes bring such beauty, until both aspects combine in the climax.

Charcloth, Firesteel and Flint (found in Dear Sweet Filthy World)

This is a bit of modern mythology- there’s no explanation, even to the characters themselves, just a typical (horrific) night in the life of the goddess of arson.  It’s one of the many stories Kiernan has where her characters reflect on where they fall into a folkloric tradition, and it works the best here.

La Peau Verte (found in To Charles Fort With Love and online)

An artist agrees to model as the Green Fairy of absinthe legend, but she has her own history with the fair folk to contend with.  I loved getting to see the classic absinthe poster girl viewed through the eye of folklore, mixing inexplicable childhood hauntings with pretentious goth parties serving what was then still a not-technically-legal drink

Andromeda Among the Stones (found in To Charles Fort with Love, The Book of Cthulhu, The Mammoth Book of New Terror, Embrace the Mutation, and The Best of Caitlin R. Kiernan Vol. 1)

This is technically the conclusion of “the Dandridge cycle”, but you don’t have to have read any of the other stories; Kiernan herself says they’re just footnotes to this one.  Each member of a family who worship- or rather, try to contain- a Lovecraftian god must contend with the burden of prophecy, be that prophecy accurate or inaccurate.  And in full belief that only she can prevent the end of the world, the daughter must offer herself up to be a cosmic guardian of the deep.

The Steam Dancer (found in The Ape’s Wife and Other Stories)

In this uncharacteristically gentle work, a girl in the old west who lost several limbs to infection gets a few mechanical prosthetics. It’s the rare and valuable steampunk story which makes real narrative and poetic use of steam technology. Hell, it’s not a bad jumping off point for newcomers to steampunk, in addition to Kieran.

The Ape’s Wife (found in The Ape’s Wife and Other Stories)

After encountering King Kong, Ann Darrow sees an ocean of possible futures. Some are horrific, some are quietly tragic. None are safe. But what is the best option for her to rejoin the world, and what world does she want to rejoin? She’s been given the blessing- or perhaps the curse- of seeing and choosing, now how will she use it?

A Season of Broken Dolls (found in A is for Alien, Beneath an Oil-Dark Sea, and online)

In the near future, galleries of extreme body modification have become high art so long as they follow two rules: the exhibits provide their consent, and are heavily dosed with morphine.  Dragged to one exhibit after another by her fetishist girlfriend, our protagonist tries to unravel the cult/art movement’s origins and escape the haunting nightmare images her lover taunts her with.

The Melusine (found in Confessions of a Five Chambered Heart, Beneath an Oil-Dark Sea, and online)

This is steampunk used for beautiful, melancholy effect.  A lonely, skeptical woman visits a carnival and has a beguiling conversation with something that may or may not be a mermaid.  Does she want to believe, or would that only open her up to hurt?

The Mermaid of the Concrete Ocean (found in Mermaids and Other Mysteries of the Deep and Beneath an Oil-Dark Sea)

More mermaids, and another story that would become part of the novel The Drowning Girl.  There may or may not be anything overtly supernatural going on in this interview with an artist’s muse reflecting on a painter’s mermaid obsession, but it’s haunting nonetheless.
