"Anastasiya stop."
Anastasiya stilled looking to her twin. Her magic swirled in her veins, cold and burning.
"Stop? Why? They desvere to pay. They desvere to be cut -"
"Can't you just sit with me? Can't - why is violence the answer to everything?"
Anastasiya raised her chin, her face closing down. Gwendolyn internally flinched, this mask - this part of her. She couldn't read this version of her.
This reeked of Aleksander's influence. Maybe that's who she needed to be. Someone dark and ruthless to stay by his side, to keep his attention.
She would have never thought those things before...but the things she'd heard from the witch lands.
Surely her sister would hate that male? What was there to love of a male who coveted power over everyone and everything else?
"Because violence wins against mercy Gwendolyn. I thought Mama taught you the same lesson she taught me."
Anastasiya turned for the door, sweeping out of the room.
"Don't worry, I'll be strong for you like always."
------
Gwendolyn brushed at her tears, too exhausted to feel embarrassed to be caught like this.
"Do - do you think I'm too weak? Too soft hearted Azriel? Do you think she's right? Should I want revenge? I just - I want to put it all behind me."
She looked at her hands, she could see those children's blood on her hands. The ones she hadn't been able to save.
"I never want to be someone like her...she's lost her soul following him....I'm sorry, I know he's your twin but he - he's leading down her a path to ruin."
//for whoever?//
The news had spread fast, the discord being woven into the current courts by the whispers of the hot-headed Aleksander and his fiery love Anastasiya. It had not gone noticed, their own families had called meetings to talk about it.
Azriel had found his way to Gwen, his hands holding her own as his thumb brushed against the back of her skin. His dark eyes focused on her as he felt himself break at the sight of her tears.
"No, not, there is no such thing as weakness. It is just a word weaponised against people," he explained. "And no, you shouldn't if that is not what you wish. Revenge isn't...the best thing. Father taught me that, he shared the story of my Aunt Sarai and her desire for revenge...I know she regrets that page in her life..."
He didn't need to look back to know Estrella was standing within the doorway, giving them their space but being nearby. He knew his cousins Emelin, Elizabeta and Estrella had been friends with them, a small group who had always been close. It was how he had got to know Gwen, seeing her when she was around his cousins.
"We are all here, I don't think their actions have gone unnoticed..."

Captain’s Star
Chapter 1 - How it all begun
It was clear, starry night in Havana. Not very cold, not very warm. Everyone hurried to home, to their families. Or...really everyone? No. Young blond girl seemed to go to a harbor. Something attracted her to a sea, without knowing, what (or who) it was. She should know it soon, though...
As Estrella de la Cruz walked around water, one ship caught her eye. It wasn’t just a banal ship, it was the biggest and cleanest ship she’d ever seen. Estrella slowly approached, curiosity took all over her. A few sailors could be seen on a deck and near to a wheel, but they disappeared quickly, they probably went into their quarters. When she got closer, she could read the name of the ship. The Silent Mary. Estrella of course heard a lot of stories about scary Spanish captain, who sent so many pirates into an armful of death, but she didn’t have a chance to meet Armando Salazar yet. She felt excited, when she climbed up to the Silent Mary.
Captain was nowhere to be seen. Estrella supposed that he’s also relaxing in his quarters as his crew. So she took the opportunity and quietly walked on the deck, wondering about everything here, but the most about Salazar. How did he look? How did he became The Butcher of the Seas? What event caused it? And such questions were in her mind. In some point, she stopped walking, looked at starry sky. She could see shooting stars and wished for answering her questions. Estrella didn’t know, that Gods decided to her her prayers and that Salazar was near her and could see her, but she couldn’t see him.
Handsome looking Spanish captain was really for a while in his quarters, relaxing in soft armchair and drinking hot chocolate. After a while, Armando came out. He didn’t hear Estrella’s light steps nor he saw her yet. He looked at a sea surface, which reflected silver light of the Moon and stars. What was the young captain thinking of? What made him feeling like he was carrying the weight of the world? No one knew. His face didn’t reveal any of Armando’s thoughts.
Curious blonde was still near captain’s quarters. Small, three coloured kitten, which was supposed to catch mice and rats on the ship, approached her slowly, meowed and came to the young woman. She was mesmerised and took the kitten on her arms and started to caress it. While she was playing with the animal, which started to happily purr, she heard steps of the patrol very close to her. Estrella didn’t have any choice, so she hid in Salazar’s quarter. When her eyes got used to see in a dark, Estrella looked around her. The quarter was furnished simply, but one look at his big bed with silk sheets told her, that captain knows, how to enjoy the life, even on the ship. She slowly walked to the bed and hid under it, still feeling adrenaline and excitement. Right after Estrella had done what she had done, she heard a very deep and strict voice, probably Armando’s, a rush on the deck and she felt Mary lightly swinged on water...
Armando slowly approached ship bridge and started to give orders to his crew. The crew begin to fulfill his commands as radioactive fish on steroids. After some time, when Estrella was still alone, she wanted to climb out and stretch her limbs, but she heard steps and quiet voice of young, small officer. “He’s going to have it cold again. Because he’s going to chase us, I’d bet my neck.” Young man didn’t sound very happy. He put something on the table and disappeared. Hidden Estrella could feel a very tempting aroma of hot chocolate, cinnamon, strawberries and fresh pastry. It seems, that also a man like Armando Salazar has some weakness. “Mhmm,” she purred. It smelled really nicely, so when nobody seemed to come here, she climbed out. She walked to the table and there was really a jar with chocolate, strawberries and pastry. There was also open map with marked route of sailing. It looked for good two or three months. Blonde bit her lip. What did she got herself into?
She sighed. This wasn’t good. But she couldn’t think about it twice, because she heard steps again. In few seconds she was under the bad and waited. After a while captain himself entered the room. He lighted the lamp and looked into the map. Now Estrella could look at him better. Armando Salazar was frowned, but still handsome looking. Clean uniform, sharp sideburns, carefully made haircut and masculine figure made from Armando a tomcat, who would shake knees of not only a one woman. Despite the fact, that his 40 was coming, slowly, but coming, Salazar was still energetic and precise. Although it’s almost midnight, he looked as if he wasn’t tired.
When Estrella first saw Armando, her heart skipped a beat. Since that moment, she couldn’t stop thinking about that handsome, smoothly shaven tanned face and muscled arms. She slowly exhaled. Sensual fantasies filled her mind and did...interesting things with her fresh, virgin body. She couldn’t look at the precious Spaniard enough. It took several minutes for Estrella to calm down.
Still not being aware of her presence, Salazar made few notes into the map and walked out to give orders. What he said then, it would get an unexperienced human upset. “I’m awaiting a few pirate ships to appear. Double patrols, and in a case of a contact with another ship you will wake me up immediately, is it clear?” “Yes, Capitán,” quite cultivated and quited voice answered. Unknown officer’s age won’t be very distant from the age of his boss.
Estrella still dreamed about Armando’s soft lips, when she heard the captain mention pirates, and she bit her lower lip again. She didn’t know, what she would do, if a pirate found her. While attractive, browneyed blonde was thinking about what she had just heard, Armando took of his coat and sit at the table. He poured the chocolate, probably cold now, but he didn’t care, and looked into the maps and some papers he had taken out of the card index. He drank a little and knocked at some certain place in the map. A spark, confirming why Armando’s called “El Diablo” between pirates, appeared in his dark chocolate eyes. Another look into the documents, and he smirked, that any officer would terrified run to his mother. “God have mercy with you, bastards,” Salazar growled. “Because there is no mercy from me.”
After some usual notes, Salazar took the cover off of the plate. It seemed, that feared El Capitán is quite a fastidious. On the plate was fragile pastry filled with cream, fruit and a bowl with venomously green apples. Captain stopped making notes, and from time to time, he ate, but he didn’t seem to be hungry at all. Salazar then took out a book from a table shelf. He opened it for a short while and immediately looked older about 10 - 15 years.
Estrella, still hiding under El Matador’s bed, dared to look at Armando with desire once again. Before she fell asleep, she thought about what will happen, when they find her. It was sure, that captain will be angry. She was a little bit anxious. Suddenly, this all didn’t seem to be such thrilling as before, when she realized something could happen to her. But there was something else, what, deeply inside of her, worried Estrella even more. Will Armando be interested in her, when he finds out, what she had done?...
Captain sighed and tossed the book aside. He undressed in a minute and turned the lamp down. Now captain Salazar seemed to be very tired and he fell asleep quickly, probably right after he put his head on a pillow. Salazar didn’t sleep much, though. Maybe 5 - 6 hours. The sky slowly blended, when Armando got up and started to getting ready for his daily duties. He just dressed his captain uniform and poured the chocolate, when someone from his crew knocked at the door. “Come in,” Salazar stated, when he wiped his freshly shaven face into the towel. The officer, who came in, couldn’t see Salazar behind the curtain, but he seemed to used to this. This man, with a title of Lieutenant, had much softer features than his captain, and also calmer nature. The only odd thing about him, was a black eyepatch on his left eye. Estrella, who woke up shortly after the captain, looked carefully around, and listened to these two men.
“We’re probably going to have fun today, Lesaro,“ Armando stated, while he was making his usual haircut. “Yes, captain?“ “Mhmm, there is one annoying ship occuring, maybe two, if we are lucky. Is Mary ready?“ Lesaro nodded. “Sure, captain, everyone is on his place.“ “Great,“ Armando mumbled and got his coat on. Before he went out, he arranged the bed. He was just centimeters from hiding Estrella.
Lady de la Cruz slowly exhaled. Her pulse accelerated. Eventually, she calmed down a little bit, when she heard another knock at the door. The small officer, who brought the chocolate yesterday, came in and greeted his captain. But he made a mistake and forgot to close the door. And before he could close them, the tiny coloured kitten run into the captain’s quarter. It meowed and disappeared under the bed. When it saw Estrella, it cuddled and started to purr. “Lo siento, Capitán,” Moss whispered and both his superiors frowned at him, Lesaro more, surprisingly. “Lieutenant,” Salazar said in threateningly tone. “Not that I have something against the cat aboard, but if I will have my coats all covered with its hair...” He didn’t have to say much more, Lesaro immediately bended and traced for the cat.
It’s here, Estrella thought and sighed. She was really nervous. She caressed the kitten once more, before she tossed it to Lesaro’s hand, knowing that Lesaro would touch her as well. And it happened. After Lesaro touched the kitten, it meowed and run to Salazar’s table, but Lesaro felt also Estrella. He frowned and looked under the bed better. Lieutenant immediately paled as paper. “Don’t try to tell me, that the cat made what I’m thinking,” Armando scowled, not even turning from his papers. Moss just took the cat and disappeared. “Well...Capitán...it...there is...” That caught Armando’s attention. “Whoever brought the cat, will clean it with his toothbrush,” Salazar frowned in a disguise. “Eliminate it. Or you want to tell me it brought you to ecstasy, Lesaro?” Lieutenant sighed and indicated Estrella, that it would be better, if she stopped hiding. Estrella sighed quietly once more and she finally climbed out, with heart beating fast. Her soul decreased to 1 square milimeter. She expected Salazar to stab her with murderous glance. “Buenos días, Capitán,” she greeted Armando with dry mouth.
Armando looked up from papers, when he heard nervous feminine voice, and he apparently couldn’t believe his own eyes. “I’m presumably dreaming,” captain consternated crossed his forehead and fairly tried not to shout at her as at guilty officer.
“Señorita, for God’s sake, what are you doing here?!“

Fantasy New Releases: 30 March 2019
Monster tamers, sellswords, stranded heroes, and transhuman mages feature in this week’s roundup of the newest releases in fantasy.
Bridge of Realms (The Stalwart Link #2) – B.T. Narro
There is no calm after the storm. But there is perseverance, ingenuity, and a whole lot of courage.
Leo’s life has been dismantled. Now with his father missing, he must rely on himself more than ever, but he’s still young. His older brother does what he can to help, but soon even Andar will rely on Leo to free them from this nightmare. The king’s army is taking over the city, against the wishes of every citizen, but there’s something special about Leo that might change everything.
Leo must grow up quickly to achieve his potential, but at a cost. He must join the very people who could destroy everything he cares about.
Emperor (Monster Tamer #4) – Isaac Hooke
Malem’s back, and he’s free of Vorgon and all things demon.
It’s time to enjoy the fruits of his labor. His newly acquired army is building a city for him and his companions in the forest. He hasn’t figured out how he’s going to pay his soldiers, but he’s confident things will work out: he has a few princesses and queens serving on his personal advisory board, after all, and they have some experience in nation building (among other special talents).
He also has a couple of new women who’ve recently joined his team, and they need to be brought up to speed, in more ways than one.
But it isn’t all fun and games in the Kingdom of Malem. Building a new city in the heart of monster territory is bound to attract some attention, and not the good kind. So when he faces a large-scale attack from an unknown enemy, it doesn’t really come as a surprise.
To stave off this latest threat, Malem must once more don his Breaker’s hat and return to the fray with his lovely companions.
Journey of a Betrayed Hero: Volume 1 – Brandon Varnell
After being betrayed by the very kingdom he saved, Jacob Stone forsook his title of Hero. Now he lives the simple life of a barkeep. Yet even that life is irrevocably erased when a young woman named Enyo appears before him.
She claims to be the daughter of the former Dark Lord and has come seeking his aid. He’d normally never consider lending her a hand, but when she tells him that she knows of a way for him to return home, he’s left with little recourse.
His journey will take him across the kingdom of Terrasole, toward the place where it all began. If he succeeds, he’ll return to the home he’d been stolen from. If he fails… well, he won’t live long enough to regret failing.
Nefarius (The Magitech Chronicles #6) – Chris Fox
Every victory comes with a price.
Krox’s assault on Shaya has been foiled, but the cost was bitter. Ternus lies in ruins, its gravity doubled by a god. Shaya is a paradise, but one populated by a mere handful of survivors. Only one power strong enough to oppose Krox remains… The Last Dragonflight.
Aran and his Outriders travel to Virkon to wake Virkonna, praying that she will join the war on their side. But neither Krox nor Nebiat is the true threat. Nefarius’s rebirth has been carefully orchestrated, and is finally at hand.
When the dust settles gods will die. Heroes will fall. The sector will never be the same.
A Sellsword’s Mercy (The Seven Virtues #6) – Jacob Peppers
Aaron and his companions have been saved from Kevlane’s creatures only to find themselves in the power of the Akalians, a shadowy group of warriors many believe aren’t men at all, but creatures of nightmare bent on blood and death.
But not all the shadows’ secrets are evil ones, and allies are often found in the unlikeliest of places.
In Baresh, the tournament has begun, and the ancient mage, Kevlane, adds more twisted creatures to his army, fashioning a force the likes of which the world has never seen.
Meanwhile, Grinners sows seeds of distrust in Perennia, turning the city against its would-be saviors, against itself. As suspicion spreads, neighbor turns against neighbor, friend against friend. Blades are drawn in dark alleyways and well-lit taverns alike, and the world’s last bastion of hope totters on the brink of destruction, a knife held at its own throat.
If Perennia is to be saved from the approaching threat, then its salvation will come not from great kings or queens, but at the hands of ordinary men and women, many whose hands are long-stained with the blood of innocents.
The Shadow Of Fallen Gods (Wounds in the Sky #2) – V. R. Cardoso
Aric may have found a new home and a new family in the desert, but once more, the emperor rears his ugly head. This time his Paladins are coming to seize not only the Guild, but Aric himself. Meanwhile, in the north, as Cassia flees the imperial hounds close on her heels, Fadan seeks the support of a rebellion fragmented by politics and personal interests.
However, it is not just the wars of men that threaten the world of Arkhemia. Eliran, on a mission to assassinate Head-Archon Astoreth, discovers that the Circle is in possession of an ancient artifact created by the gods themselves.
Winds of war are rising, and in the coming chaos, the Circle’s sinister plans can only blossom. Can they be stopped? Is it already too late?
Trying Times (The Valens Legacy #14) – Jan Stryvant
As if Sean doesn’t have enough problems, is seems that the crazies have finally decided to take him on. Whether it’s fanatics who think he’s the devil incarnate, or just people looking for any excuse to spread carnage, they’ve decided that Sean and the lycans present a problem that needs to be eliminated.
Then there’s that leak in Washington, apparently they didn’t remove all of the demonic influences from D.C. like they thought they had.
But even with this added complication to the war, Sean’s still very happy to be home once again and back in the arms of his loving wives and family. Estrella’s also happy to be back on the side of the gateway on which she belongs, not to mention having finally found a husband and a family. Though things may have changed just a little bit since she left.
Viridian Gate Online: Dead Man’s Tide (The Illusionist Book 2) – D.J. Bodden and James Hunter
Viridian Gate Online is more than just a game… and now, it’s Alan Campbell’s whole world.
Recently deceased and squishy as hell, Alan, a newly minted Illusionist, is forced to flee for his life. He needs time to deal with his loss, both in-game and IRL, but first he’ll have to escape his crazy ex, the treacherous Firebrand, Thalia Daceran.
On his way to safety and revenge, he’ll team up with Titus, the Imperial spymaster, as well as a crew of pirates, commandos, and even a shapeshifting Mimic with a taste for blood. His path leads to Wyrdtide, a gaslit city hidden in mists and governed by dark demigods.
But even with Alan dead, the world marches on. Will the government seize control of V.G.O.? Did Horace, the blind beggar, really die? And whatever happened to Jeff? Find answers, new purpose, and the machinations of the gods in this action-packed continuation of the Illusionist Series.
