"Korkie," Satine says, trying and failing to not laugh at her son nephew. "I know you're not that tall."

@fairyt0ld // for korkie [meme - accepting]
There's a soft, fond look on Satine's face as she watches and listens to Korkie speak. It's very true that there is a great deal of other things that demand her attention, but she's not going to deny him her time. Especially when he is so animated in his storytelling. Fingers press to her lips in an attempt to disguise the amused smile threatening to spread.
When he finishes, the soft laugh slips free. "That's a terrible story."

@fairyt0ld ( continued )
Satine squeezes Korkie's hand, struggling to smile back at him and knowing she's failing. She's done that a lot in her time. Too much, really.
"I hold many regrets in my life," she tells him. "But I've always tried to do what was best for Mandalore. I need you to promise me to do the same. No." She shakes her head, frustrated at herself for saying it. "No. Choose what's best for you. I think perhaps I'd have fewer regrets if I'd taken the choices that I had. I made the most progress for Mandalore in those moments I was selfish. I'm not saying you should be selfish, but stepping down from ruling Mandalore was the right choice. Even if it feels like I betrayed our people to do it."

@fairyt0ld said : ❛ i am always with you. ❜ korkie to his mama
Satine's gaze is soft as she looks at Korkie. Her precious boy, her son. There's so much she wishes he knew. There is so much she wishes she could tell him. His words are a comfort to her, even if they bring her sadness-- moving her to Coruscant makes the most sense to give her the time and resources to recover from Maul's attack, but she doesn't want to leave Korkie behind.
"As I am with you," she says quietly. "More than you'll ever know. I'm so proud of you, Korkie. I hope you know how proud your family is of you. How proud your parents are of all you've accomplished." How proud your mother is of you.

this is what it feels to be kar'taylir kryze. he is seventeen years old; while he has one more year as a child in both republic law and mandolorian, he relinquishes childhood as soon as he saw the auburn haired jedi hold the body of his aunt. "korkie, look away!" his other aunt says, using her body to shield the teenager, but he already has seen it. he already has felt it. one moment there was light and the next he could see it being snuffed out like one would snuff out a candle.
the jedi weeps silently over his aunt's body.
korkie has seen more than enough and suddenly childhood is gone; childhood is the kingdom of immortality and spring, but all he fears is the cruel certainty of mortality and the chilling grasp of winter. it hits him while his aunt pulls him away that the only mother he's ever known grows colder and colder, while he lives, while the jedi lives, and while the demon that crows so gleefully sits on the sundari throne lives and it's too much.
when he howls auntie, even if he might've slipped a strangled buir out by accident, he can feel the ground quake with the enormity of his grief.
this is what it feels like to be kar'taylir kryze on the worst day of his life.
This is fine. I'm fine.

fairyt0ld
mandalore was his home. the domed cities of sundari were the only thing he’s ever known. of course, he went on the odd diplomatic venture to coruscant with his aunt and was already set to attend university at the republic’s capital, but from his accent to his beliefs and to his very bones mandalore was his home. his life. his culture.
so when she corrects herself, when she gives him leave to do what he feels is right for him, he cannot say for certain if he truly feels guilty for being so relieved to hear her blessing or merely thinks he ought to feel guilty. he was the heir while his aunt bo-kattan remained an enigma, and now she is there and he can’t help but think that maybe she’d be better. not better than his auntie, but miles better than him.
there’s a big part of him that blames the people for what happened. a good ruler wouldn’t hold grudges against the innocent and faceless for the atrocities of the few. he wouldn’t be a good ruler. ❛❛ you always made it look so easy. ruling, politics, yelling at people … ❜❜ he trails off with a fond smile, his dimples peeking out from the dusting of freckles on the apples of his cheeks, rubbing his thumb on the back of her hand comfortingly. ❛❛ you are the wisest woman i know. strongest woman i know. person, even. you fought for my generation to be safe and protected i’ll never forget that, auntie, and i’m certain others won’t either. ❜❜
Satine smiles a little. “It’s not easy,” she says. “It’s just all I’ve ever known to do. Politics have consumed my life; it’s part of why you were kept from the middle of it for as long as you were.” As heir, perhaps he should’ve been by her side from his earliest years. But she hadn’t trusted herself to keep him safe.
“Perhaps,” she says. “I think Mandalore was never going to be able to take the steps forward toward progress while I was still in charge. You’ve grown into a brilliant young man, Korkie.” Her smile is a little sad. “You remind me so much of your father, you know. You’re going to do great things.”
She wants to be selfish so badly, she wants to be honest. Korkie had been raised by her brother, and she hopes her words can disguise the true meaning. Still, it hurts to know there’s so much she’ll never be able to say. She drops her gaze for a moment. “I have something for you. A parting gift, I suppose.”
