Rosalie very rarely tends to speak honestly— at least in the emotional sense; everyone has become attuned to scathing remarks and unrelenting sarcasm, but despite appearances, Rosalie is most familiar to Esme. She thinks Rosalie knows that too. If Emmett isn't around to provide that column of support, Rosalie seeks Esme's company... or so it seems. Of course, Esme could be completely wrong, but it hardly matters right now.

Esme lingers behind the other, Rosalie's blonde hair reflecting the orange of a setting sun. In the moment she looks similar to the paintings of icons you find in the Catholic church. Divine.

"I know Edward gets frustrated," she begins tentatively, her gaze going beyond Rosalie to follow the sun's journey below the horizon, "but I will not. You are allowed to be hurt, angry, dissatisfied..." Even Esme felt these things. Her acceptance of immortality might have come more easily than Rosalie's, but there are still days she feels as heavy as she did on that cliff. "It's there anything particularly bothering you right now?"

Perhaps a stupid question, but Esme did not retract it.

rosalie stands as still as a statue as she stares at bella. she feels the phantom thumping of her still heart and the imaginary tightening of her chest. rage is one emotion that she'll never forget the physical sensations of. she felt it during some of her last moments as a human, and she imagines she feels it nearly every time bella is in the room. she shoots a glare in alice's direction. "fine. come find me when she leaves." she doesn't try to whisper or keep this out of bella's earshot. and once it's said, she turns on her designer heel and stalks out of the room. she'll apologize to alice for snapping at her later, she decides. besides, she wants to 'handle it,' and rosalie certainly won't argue there.

"Did something happen?" It was not hard for her to fall into the role. She has cared for Bree since she and Emmett adopted the girl as their daughter. Esme is exhausted having to pick up the pieces. It's one of those rare days where she's angry that Carlisle didn't simply let her slip away. She's exhausted with Edward and Rosalie's hostility and playing peacemaker; it reminds her of those days spent tiptoeing around Charles and she despises it.

And yet she knows it's not entirely their fault, which just causes her anger at Carlisle to grow heavier.

She doesn't want to be angry at the person she adores the most.

Fingers massage her scalp as Rosalie speaks. Esme hasn't admitted to feeling broken, but she must look it— especially if Rosalie is commenting on such. Arms fall to her side and Esme offers a half-hearted smile. It's hard to admit, especially to Rosalie, that Esme (at least right now) is done building something new.

Part of her wishes she could be living in Ashland with her son, teaching as she had always wished to do— and got to for a brief moment of time. And yet, with that wish comes the reality that her son would in fact not be with her. And, with that reality, Esme wishes that Carlisle would have allowed her the peace she sought when the truth brought such heartache.

"I've rebuilt myself so many times," she sighs, smoothing creases from the material of her skirt as she speaks, "it gets tiring after a while." A truth she feels guilty for admitting to Rosalie; Esme has spent tremendous effort in reassuring her that life will get better. Is this not a contradiction? "Sometimes I wonder if I'm even the same person any more."
