"NO!!"

                                 There are two times he says it. 

The first - a shot rings out. A moment of shock passes as she fires a shot in return. It is a moment of blind heroism - of foolishness. Rifle aimed straight at her lovers chest - she sees it before he does - acts before she thinks. A rarity for the ribbon haired girl. 

                             " NO ! “

The moment he says it shock subsides. She falls to the mud below. It feels cool on the fire roaring in her hip. she can’t hear gunshots over the ringing in her ears. Can’t see the battle through the spots in her vision. Then darkness - nothing but darkness as hands calloused by quill and war cradle her head. 

                       “ it’s a woman … “

                                                       “  is she ALIVE ?!“

                       “ this whole time … a woman“ 

                                                        “ I ASKED YOU IF SHE WAS ALIVE . “ 

she wakes for a few moments to the tremor of his roar. Alive - he’s alive. In the few moments of consciousness she finds peace before fading away into the nothingness once more. 

She feels colder the next time she awakes. The pain in her stomach now an inferno that spreads throughout the majority of her body. Despite the chill sweat beads her forehead. Her heart stutters painfully in her chest, trying desperately to find the right rhythm. 

                         “ I’ve done all I c a n , but we don’t                        have enough requisitions to fend off the infection. “

                                                                  “ Then i’ll get them “ 

                        “ there’s not enough time.                       You need to say your goodbyes. “

                                                                  “ I WILL NOT - ! “ 

It’s her cough that interrupts him from lashing out on the doctor once more. She means to speak, means to beckon him but throat is too parched to speak up that loudly - needles stuck in her trachea. He rushes to her side, grabs her hand and wipes the hair from her forehead, eyes searching hers in desperation for certainty - for life. It takes a moment for the coughing to subside, 

                             “ I love you . “ 

                                                               “ I - “ 

A weak shake of her head interrupts him as she smiles, lifts one hand to cup his cheek. His skin feels as cool as the mud - one final comfort for him to offer her. 

                   “ It’s like you said, we must move forwards. You have to let go . “ 

a sob heaves from his chest and she shushes him with what little strength she has left, rubs his cheek with the pad of her thumb. As she looks into his eyes the pain subsides for a moment, the fire simmering to embers, a familiar warmth filling her chest. Her heart flutters once more and she convulses, a soft gasp escaping her throat, eyes widening as she takes in all she can of him one last time. Her stubborn lover. Her Alexander. Before the shroud of darkness envelops her one last time she hears his voice, soft and broken in her ear. 

                                              ��       “ no . “
