Continuing the Public Library of Ruina rambles:
Malkuth gets to be Circulation. This would be the affairs to do with the basic business of running a library-- checking books out, checking books in, getting them back on the shelves. This is the fundamental mechanism of the library, so of course it is one of the most entry-level and looked-down-on. Shelving is manual labor, after all. And fairly serious manual labor-- there's a lot of shelves that were made before accessibility standards suggested maybe keeping stuff an inch off the floor was a pain in the back, and books are actually pretty heavy. I like to refer to the particularly chonky hardcovers as murder weapons, but even flimsy kids' paperbacks pile up fast. Those carts are serious, yo.
This also covers "shelfreading" (making sure things are actually in order and someone didn't screw up or even deliberately shove a book they hate in the wrong place as an act of protest) and condition-checking. There's a natural wear and tear on books, of course, particularly paperbacks-- they accumulate spine cracks and dog-ears and discoloration even with proper use. However, in a public library, you're also gonna have to deal with a lot of improper use. In the less-dystopian world, you have to deal with books eaten or peed on (hopefully by pets), food stains (or bookmarks), books that got wet (there's damn near no salvaging that), etc (I still don't want to know how so many cigarette butts got in that encyclopedia set. It wasn't allowed to leave the library.). In the more-dystopian world, well, mostly that except more blood.
There's quite a bell curve between people who do not care about returning books (or "can you extend that hold 3 months while I'm out of the country") and people who are terrified when they accidentally return something a day late. The public library of Ruina could have draconian return policies, it's true to the flavor and might help in the light-gathering, but it's not really true to my experience. There's a strong trend in public libraries of eliminating late fines altogether-- they scare people out of coming to the library, punish poor people who need it most, and cost as much to try and collect as they take in anyway. At my library, we'll charge a replacement fine after a few weeks, but as long as you eventually return it in decent condition, you're good. With her extensive practice (and inability to leave the library to collect fines), Angela would probably speedrun this transition from "we must protect the books!!" to "eh who gives a fuck". Malkuth would not. She would feel increasingly devalued and undercut, not allowed to enforce the rules she believes should be in place, overworked with supervision and scheduling and logistics and basically running the damn place. In short, the same situation she was in at LobCorp, plus customer service.
So, yup, this is one of many reasons why this is a librarian-meltdowns LOR AU.

Lynn-
"So... this is the library of ruina..."
I say, fascinated as I look around, eyes glimmering with curiosity.
Tumblr media
"Yeah, this is the place. And uh, by be careful, I mean very careful. All of the other Librarians will likely try to kill you on sight, and Daemon won't leave anything of you behind when they do."
A sigh, before he lets go of her hand, tucking his hands into his pockets as he looked around the area. The area was truly... Unusual. Most notably was a staircase toward the back of the area, stretching up into the well-illuminated area, bookshelves filling the area. All bookshelves were filled with books, and candles rested around - though none of them seemed to be the sources of the light.
Additionally, tables were resting around the area, all with books piled on them - unsorted and some with bookmarks in them. One table in particular was different from the rest - as it had a single comfortable-looking chair, and had the same book that Angela usually carried resting on the table.
"Try to not mess with anything, since I uh. Don't want Angela to turn you into a book."

LEYENDAS Y TRADICIONES MINERAS
#misterio #leyendasdeterror #quierosabersobreterrorymisterio
