Writing Notes: Galaxies

Galaxies come in many shapes and sizes.

Some are spirals like our own galaxy, but others are fuzzy balls or shapeless clouds. The smallest have just a few million stars. The largest contain trillions.

Although they look packed with stars, galaxies are mostly empty space.

If you made a scale model of the Milky Way with a grain of sand for each star, the nearest star to the Sun would be 4 miles (6 km) away.

The furthest would be 80,000 miles (130,000 km) away.

The stars in a galaxy are held together by gravity and travel slowly around the galactic heart.

In many galaxies, including ours, a supermassive black hole lies hidden in the center. Stars and other material are sucked into this cosmic plughole by gravity and disappear forever.

Galaxy Shapes

Astronomers classify galaxies into just a few main types, depending on the shape we observe from Earth.

|| Spiral || Barred Spiral ||

Spiral - A central hub of stars is surrounded by spiral arms curving out.

Barred spiral - A straight bar runs across the center, connecting spiral arms.

|| Elliptical || Irregular ||

Elliptical - More than half of all galaxies are simple ball shapes.

Irregular - Galaxies with no clear shape are classified as irregular.

How Spiral Arms Form

The stars in a galaxy orbit the center, taking millions of years to make one circuit.

Spiral arms appear where stars pass in and out of crowded areas, like cars passing temporarily through a traffic jam.

One theory is that these traffic jams happen because the orbits of different stars don’t line up neatly.

The Milky Way

If you could look down on the Milky Way galaxy from above, the view would be like flying over a glittering city at night.

Most of the galaxy’s 200 billion stars are in the central bulge.

Curving around this are two vast spiral arms and several smaller arms.

The Milky Way is thought to be a barred spiral (see panel), but we can’t see its shape clearly from Earth since we view it from the inside.

In the night sky, the Milky Way appears only as a milky band of light.

Colliding Galaxies

Sometimes galaxies crash and tear each other apart.

Individual stars don’t collide, but gas clouds do, and gravity pulls the colliding galaxies into new shapes.

End of the Milky Way

In 4 billion years our galaxy will collide with the Andromeda galaxy.

What are some current WIPS you have rn? :p

I'm going to define "current" as anything I've worked on in the past several-ish months, otherwise the list would be very short. Here's a few that I may or may not ever get around to publishing (this list is not counting any of my ongoing works/series that are already on Ao3):

• At the top of my list is an Invader Zim/Gravity Falls longfic crossover that I actually started way back in 2019 (haven't worked on it consistently, I've taken some loooong breaks). I don't wanna get too into what it's about but I'm a decent ways into it. The reason I haven't posted the first chapter yet is because I'm determined not to post it until I'm finished with it, or at least close to finished (we'll see if my resolve holds).

• I have a short Poolverine LITERAL crackfic (as in, it is about crack cocaine) that I've been struggling to work up the motivation to finish.

• A Yandere Atom Eve fic

• Transmasc Rex-Splode fic

• Ford-focused fic based loosely on "There Is No Antimemetics Division" by qntm

• Slow-burn Fiddauthor cabin days

BONUS (deeeefinitely not "current" WIPs in any sense of the word, I was just doing some digging in my drive and found these amusing):

• The Pines in Lethal Company, crackfic, I wrote a single sentence for this and then gave up

• A half-baked Picture of Dorian Gray one-shot.

• Eh I was planning to write a cathartic Light Yagami fic about the lovable, hateable little dipshit squirming in mental anguish at the end of the series like he deserves, but can it be called a WIP if I only ever created a Google doc and then never wrote a single word?

• **shuffles papers and squints** I have a prompt here that says "The Pines Family lives in Bill’s fucked up dollhouse" but I baaasically ended up writing that for Married Life. Hmm.

• **squints harder** What the fuck? **un-crumples ancient page** Half-baked Takashi Natsume whump from Book of Friends?

Cold Afternoon; Warm Drink

There is nothing better on a cold afternoon than making milky chai. I even make it with my own spice blend that *several* Desi friends taught me over the years. Then I (maybe) commit sacrilege by frothing the milk because I like foam! What can I say? If you drink it, what's your favorite way to make chai?

Just to confirm, is Lotor in the Milky Way or just hovering (galactically speaking) nearby? And if it's the former, what are his thoughts on the galaxy?

He wasn't at the time of his appearance in Eternity in Promise, but he will be by next chapter (though that doesn't necessarily mean he'll appear). Regardless, you'll see him again in this story for sure.
